As you get off the Blue line Medical Center stop one of the first things you notice is Cook County Hospital on the south side. In front of it you can see the large statue of Louis Pasteur. One of the founding fathers of modern medicine. Statue created by Leon Hermant in 1928 it was originally located in Grant Park but was moved here in 1946. This is the first stop on our visit to Chicago #39;s Taylor Street / Little Italy area. It was once a thriving immigrant community until the construction of two highways and the expansion of the U of I and Rush hospital displaced many of the original residents. A hundred years ago Taylor street was a slum now it #39;s home to trendy restaurants and bars. We are presenting a series of videos exploring some of it #39;s past. Medicine Creek is a popular swimming hole in the summer, but now it also will be a winter trout fishing destination. State wildlife officials ended the winter trout fishery below Lake Altus-Lugert Lake this year because trout could not survive in the stream due to golden alga blooms.
Looking for an alternative site for winter trout fishing in the southwestern part of the state, the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation will start putting trout in Medicine Creek in the city limits of Medicine Park.
We think it has a lot of potential, said Gene Gilliland, assistant chief of fisheries for the Wildlife Department.
There are number of other places that we might have gone (in southwest Oklahoma), places with more of a lake-type environment. But this one just had more appeal, the little restaurants and shops at Medicine Park, and the stream environment.
The trout that had been designated for Quartz Mountain now will go to Medicine Creek, but it will be Jan. 1 before fishing will begin there, Gilliland said.

KUCHING: The effort to integrate Chinese medicine into mainstream health system in non-Chinese majority countries is gaining momentum in recent years, said the World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies (WFCMS) chairwoman She Jing yesterday.
She pointed out that the positive development could be seen from a resolution that was passed in a recent meeting of World Health Organisation (WHO) in urging its member states to include traditional medicine into their national health system as well as the significant number of countries practising the Chinese medicine.
There are over 160 countries in the world practising Chinese medicine. Among the popular methods are acupuncture and massage. In America, acupuncture is even covered in insurance policy, she told a press conference prior to the opening of the 9th World Congress of Chinese Medicine at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) here.
She explained that Chinese medicine, which emphasises on the balance between the human body and the environment, is getting appreciated by many non-Chinese who are seeking a healthy lifestyle.
WFCMS vice-chairman and secretary-general Prof Li Zhen Ji, who was also present at the news conference, added that Chinese medicine with its complete system and proven medical record is the main reason the traditional medicine is being accepted by non-Chinese.
He claimed that over 10,000 non-Chinese have completed their studies in Chinese medicine in China, out of which over two thousand are pursuing masters and PhD degrees.
There are over 90 countries in the world collaborating with the Chinese government in the study of Chinese medicine. This figure is solid proof that Chinese medicine is widely recognised in foreign countries.
In Malaysia, the Traditional and Complementary (TCM) Bill 2012 was tabled for first reading in the Dewan Rakyat on June 27.

Even as regenerative medicine emerges as a new hope for many, doctors caution that it takes time to get a new discovery from the research lab to patient treatment.
As an example, one type of regenerative medicine, treatment of blood cancer disorders, has taken about 50 years to develop, said Mayo Clinic heart specialist Dr. Andre Terzic,director of Mayo's regenerative medicine center.
"We want to make sure that we are not creating a hype in the society but that we are really offering hope for patients, and ultimately definitive solutions," he said.
Yet it might be hard for people awaiting cures to contain their excitement.
"It has clearly gone from science fiction into rigorous science, and now from science it's going into practice," Terzic said. "It's not yet a broadly-offered servicebut it's in the phase of rigorous clinical trials."
Dr. Stephen Russell, Mayo Clinic's associate director for translation, says"we can't just take what we did in the mouse and apply it in the clinic."
"What we have to do is we have to develop a clinical protocol, we have to scale up the manufacture of the product that we're going to use, which may involve the scaled culturing of cells from a patient," he said.
Human research studies must pass muster from the Institutional Review Board at Mayo as well as from the FDA.
"That process with your foot hard on the accelerator is probably a two- to three-year process," Russell said.

In four scientific presentations, investigators from the Mt. Sinai School of Medicine and the Baptist Hospital of Miami jointly presented the following findings:
"BioImage Study: Value of Novel Biomarker Panel (CardioSCORE) in Predicting Major Adverse Cardiovascular Events among those with Absence of Coronary Calcification" assessed the value of the CardioSCORE test for predicting near-term cardiovascular risk among the 1,832 study participants who were found to be free of coronary arterial calcification as determined by computed tomography. For this group, otherwise assessed to be at low risk for cardiovascular events, investigators reported that elevated CardioSCORE test results were associated with a significantly increased risk of major cardiovascular events, including heart attack and ischemic stroke, in the near-term follow-up period of 2.5 years.
"BioImage Study: Reclassification and Discrimination by Novel Biomarker Panel (CardioSCORE), Coronary Calcium Score, Carotid Intima-Media Thickness & Plaque Burden in Asymptomatic Individuals" compared the predictive power of the CardioSCORE test to three atherosclerosis imaging modalities including coronary artery calcium evaluation by computed tomography, ultrasound carotid intima-media thickness assessment, and ultrasound carotid atherosclerotic plaque quantification. Across the entire study cohort, investigators reported that the CardioSCORE test yielded near-term cardiovascular event prediction significantly better than conventional ultrasound imaging methodologies, and was of comparable predictive power as coronary artery calcium evaluation.
"BioImage Study: Novel Biomarker Panel (CardioSCORE) for the Prediction of First Major Cardiovascular Events across the Full Range of Framingham Risk Scores" assessed the extent of the additive predictive value of the CardioSCORE test to traditional risk factor scoring as aggregated in the Framingham Risk Score, in 6,600 study participants. Investigators reported that the addition of the CardioSCORE test to the Framingham Risk Score significantly increased the accuracy with which individuals at high risk for near-term events were correctly identified, particularly within the low and intermediate risk categories.
"BioImage Study: Combined Use of Novel Biomarker Panel (CardioSCORE) and Computed Tomography Coronary Calcium Scores in Predicting Major Adverse Cardiovascular Events" assessed 5,763 study participants to determine the extent of the additive predictive value of the CardioSCORE Test to coronary artery calcium scoring by computed tomography. Investigators reported that the addition of CardioSCORE test results to coronary artery calcium scoring significantly increased the accuracy with which individuals at high risk for near-term events were correctly identified across all levels of coronary calcification.
"These results suggest that the CardioSCORE test has the significant potential to provide valuable information about an individual's risk of experiencing a near-term heart attack or stroke," said Eric Bouvier, President and CEO of BG Medicine. "There is a critical need for a simple and easy-to-use blood test to more accurately determine a patient's risk for these types of catastrophic events."
