Medicine for the People

PUTNEY -- About seven years ago, Thomas Garbarino began treating patients with acupuncture and Chinese herbs.

His client list grew, and as he became more established in Putney he began to envision an expanded health care and education center that would link patients with a variety of health-care practitioners.

The center, he imagined, would also have room for classes, and would offer space for yoga, tai chi chuan and other movement therapies.

Now, after summoning the courage, and financial resources, to take the next leap, Garbarino, and his partner, Adrienne DeGuevara, have opened their new office, Medicine for the People, at 125 Main St., in the Carriage House behind Town Hall.

The new office has enough room for seven practitioners who specialize in midwifery, Thai massage, reflexology, acupuncture and oriental medicine, shiatsu and nutrition and herbs.

The office also has room for meditation, tai chi and yoga.

Garbarino and DeGuevara, who does traditional Thai massage and craniosacral therapy, worked near each other in another building in Putney and over the past few years they began talking about coming together to create a bigger clinic that could accommodate their practices as well as other health care workers in the area.

"About two years ago we decided that we wanted to do something more here in Putney," DeGuevara said. "Our business has been slowly growing and we were outgrowing our office. There

When they found out there was going to be a larger space available in the Carriage House they decided it was time to take a risk and expand their business.

Artificial Kidneys – Dialysis Machine….. – Video

Artificial Kidneys - Dialysis Machine.....
Dialysis Dialysis involves a technique used for removing waste products from the blood and excess fluid from the body as a treatment for kidney failure. Why it is done? The kidneys filter approximately 1500 liters of blood daily. From this volume of blood, the kidney reabsorbs important elements such as sodium, potassium, calcium, amino acids, glucose and water. In people whose kidney have been damaged this process may fail either suddenly (in acute kidney failure) or gradually in chronic renal failure. Waste starts to accumulate in the blood, with harmful, sometimes even life threatening effects. In severe cases, the function must be taken over by artificial means of dialysis. Dialysis is called artificial kidney. Kidney Machines A kidney machine is a mechanical device through which a patient #39;s blood passes. The blood leaves the body usually from an artery in the forearm and return to a nearby vein. Inside the machine the blood flows over or between membranes containing dissolved fluid (Dialysing fluid) and salt in concentrations normally found in blood. Solid constituents in the blood in excess of normal concentrations diffuse across the membrane into the dialyzing fluid. In this way waste like urea which accumulate in the body are extracted. Blood cells and protein remain in the blood. The process is called haemodialysis. Two kinds of dialysis are performed in clinical medicine. They are haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. A Butterball Turkey Thanksgiving – Video

A Butterball Turkey Thanksgiving
Less than a year after a Mercy For Animals undercover investigation into a Butterball turkey facility led to five workers being charged with criminal cruelty to animals, a new investigation shows that animal abuse continues to run rampant at Butterball factory farms. In October of 2012, an MFA investigator documented a pattern of shocking abuse and neglect at numerous Butterball turkey operations in North Carolina, including: + workers kicking and stomping on birds, dragging them by their fragile wings and necks, and maliciously throwing turkeys onto the ground or on top of other birds; + birds suffering from serious untreated illnesses and injuries, including open sores, infections, and broken bones; and + workers grabbing birds by their wings or necks and violently slamming them into tiny transport crates with no regard for their welfare. Dr. Greg Burkett, poultry welfare scientist and adjunct professor of avian medicine and surgery at North Carolina State College of Veterinary Medicine, lent his expert review to MFA #39;s hidden-camera footage. Dr. Burkett, who also accompanied Hoke County law enforcement officials during a raid at a Butterball turkey factory farm last year, stated of the video: "The abuses shown in this video are identical to the abuses documented in last year #39;s Butterball investigation which led to criminal cruelty to animals charges and convictions. Video Diary - About to head into the village...
I had just visited our free health clinic. Last time I visited it was yet to be opened so it was amazing to see it in full swing. I met a man whom after being in an accident, and braking his leg, had to sell his land to pay for consultations at another clinic, (4 trips 200). We found him in his home with his leg rotting away. He was in such a terrible condition, the other clinics said they would not treat him and that he would probably have to have his leg amputated. Since we found him, we have been treating him in our free multifunctional medical clinic, which has meant that he A. won #39;t loose his home, and B. keeps his leg! Now of to the village to meet a girl who is 13 (sorry i said 14 - I won #39;t give up my day job for presenting anytime soon!!!) who ran away after giving birth by C section and leaving her child behind. We worked with her and reunited them, why did she run? She was scared! We believe our free multifunctional medical clinics to be one of the most effective ways of reducing the rate of child abandonment. More than that, the clinics also provide a forum where vital education and knowledge sharing about disease prevention and improved health practices can take place. Our clinics are strategically placed in rural towns lacking other medical services or hospitals and as such, cater directly to the needs of the area or region in question. Commonly though our Clinics are committed to the provision of complimentary family medicine, gynaecology obstetric and ...From:HumanitasCharityViews:0 0ratingsTime:02:32More inNonprofits Activism

Surprise origin for coronary arteries could speed advances in regenerative medicine

Public release date: 21-Nov-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ]

Contact: Kim Newman sciencenews@einstein.yu.edu 718-430-3101 Albert Einstein College of Medicine

November 21, 2012 (BRONX, NY) During embryonic development, the all-important coronary arteries arise from cells previously considered incapable of producing them, according to scientists at Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University. The research, carried out in mice and published today in the online edition of the journal Cell, may speed development of regenerative therapies for heart disease.

The research, carried out in mice and published today in the online edition of the journal Cell, may speed development of regenerative therapies for heart disease.

Each year, more than one million Americans undergo coronary revascularization which includes coronary artery bypass graft (CABG). During CABG, doctors remove a portion of a healthy vein, usually from a patients leg, then bypass diseased areas of the coronary arteries. While the procedure has become routine and is considered relatively safe and long-lasting, the veins used during bypass do not completely mimic the arteries they bypass. They can sometimes re-clog, a process known as restenosis, requiring further procedures. Therefore, the ability to regenerate coronary arteries could usher in a new wave of more effective cardiac care.

Coronary arteries nourish heart muscle with the nutrients and oxygen it needs for pumping. Heart attacks occur when coronary arteries become blocked, causing heart muscle to die. Recent studies had suggested that during development, the coronary arteries originate from cells of the sinus venosus (a heart cavity that exists only in embryos) or from the epicardium (the hearts outermost layer).

In their study, Einstein scientists used a wide variety of research tools to show that the coronary arteries largely arise from cells of the endocardium, the hearts innermost cell layer. In particular, the arteries arise from endocardial cells lining the ventricles (the two large chambers of the heart).

The prevailing wisdom was that endocardial cells are terminally differentiated, meaning they cannot become any other cell type, said study leader Bin Zhou, M.D., Ph.D., associate professor of genetics, of pediatrics, and of medicine at Einstein. But our study shows that one population of endocardial cells is actually responsible for forming the coronary arteries.

More specifically, ventricular endocardial cells develop into coronary artery progenitor (precursor) cells, which then go on to form the coronary arteries. Dr. Zhou and his colleagues also identified a key signaling pathway involved in transforming the ventricular endocardial cells into coronary artery progenitor cells. Einstein has filed a patent application related to this research. The Nfatc1 cell technology is available for licensing.

The Einstein researchers are now trying to identify all the signaling mechanisms that guide the development of the coronary arteries, with the aim of one day synthesizing healthy coronary arteries to replace diseased ones. When provided with the right environmental signals, vascular progenitor cells can form functional vessels in a petri dish, said Dr. Zhou. If we can figure out the critical signals regulating coronary artery differentiation and formation, then perhaps we could coax ventricular endocardial cells to build new coronary arteries that can replace damaged onesbasically duplicating the way that these vessels are formed in the body, said Dr. Zhou.

'E-Medicine' May Not Be Cost Saver After All, Study Says

By Steven Reinberg HealthDay Reporter

TUESDAY, Nov. 20 (HealthDay News) -- Patients who can access their medical records and test results online tend to use more medical services and visit their doctor more often than before, according to a surprising new study.

It was believed that viewing health records electronically and being able to email the doctor would result in fewer office visits and phone calls -- and ultimately cut health costs -- but that wasn't the case here.

"Our hypothesis going into the study was exactly that," said lead researcher Dr. Ted Palen, a clinician researcher at Kaiser Permanente Colorado Institute for Health Research in Denver.

It's possible that the increase in medical services wasn't the result of online access, Palen said. "This was an association we found, it wasn't necessarily a cause and effect. We need to understand more about this association."

Ultimately, he speculated, online access will produce better health care and better results for patients.

For the study, published in the Nov. 21 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association, Palen's team collected data on Kaiser Permanente members in Colorado enrolled from 2005 to 2010.

Researchers tracked office visits, telephone calls, after-hours clinic visits, emergency department visits and hospitalizations for roughly 44,000 adults with online access to their medical records and 44,000 patients without access.

They found online users had 16 percent more office visits and 8 percent more telephone calls in the year after they gained online access, compared to their rate beforehand.

Patients without online access had 8 percent fewer clinic visits and no change in telephone calls.
