Habit of giving key to longevity

Washington, Feb 5 (IANS) If you want good health and longevity, then make a habit of giving, says a study.

The study has been borne out by a five-year study by three universities.

Principal study investigator Michael J. Poulin, from the University of Buffalo, said: "This study offers a significant contribution... specifically to our understanding of how giving assistance to others may offer health benefits to the giver by buffering the negative effects of stress."

Poulin, assistant professor of psychology at Buffalo, along with colleagues at Stony Brook University and Grand Valley State University, conducted the study, involving 846 subjects, the American Journal of Public Health reports.

They point out that although it is established that social isolation and stress are significant predictors of mortality and morbidity, 20 years of studies and meta-analytical review have failed to establish that receiving social support from others buffers recipients against mortality after exposure to psychosocial stress.

"We tested the hypothesis that providing help to others would predict a reduced association between stress and mortality for the helpers," Poulin said, according to a Buffalo statement.

"Specifically, over the five years of the study, we found that when dealing with stressful situations, those who had helped others during the previous year were less likely to die than those who had not helped others," he said.

Self-reported stressful experiences included such things as serious, non-life-threatening illness, burglary, job loss, financial difficulties or death of a family member.

Longevity gene may lead to 'molecular fountain of youth'

Washington, Feb 1 (ANI): A new study has made a major advance in the understanding of the molecular mechanisms behind aging, providing new hope for the development of targeted treatments for age-related degenerative diseases.

Researchers were able to turn back the molecular clock by infusing the blood stem cells of old mice with a longevity gene and rejuvenating the aged stem cells' regenerative potential.

The biologists found that SIRT3, one among a class of proteins known as sirtuins, plays an important role in helping aged blood stem cells cope with stress. When they infused the blood stem cells of old mice with SIRT3, the treatment boosted the formation of new blood cells, evidence of a reversal in the age-related decline in the old stem cells' function.

"We already know that sirtuins regulate aging, but our study is really the first one demonstrating that sirtuins can reverse aging-associated degeneration, and I think that's very exciting," said study principal investigator Danica Chen, UC Berkeley assistant professor of nutritional science and toxicology.

"This opens the door to potential treatments for age-related degenerative diseases," Chen noted.

Notably, SIRT3 is found in a cell's mitochondria, a cell compartment that helps control growth and death, and previous studies have shown that the SIRT3 gene is activated during calorie restriction, which has been shown to extend lifespan in various species.

To gauge the effects of aging, the researchers studied the function of adult stem cells, which are responsible for maintaining and repairing tissue; it is a function that breaks down with age. They focused on hematopoietic, or blood, stem cells because of their ability to completely reconstitute the blood system, the capability that underlies successful bone marrow transplantation.

The researchers first observed the blood system of mice that had the gene for SIRT3 disabled. Surprisingly, among young mice, the absence of SIRT3 made no difference. It was only when time crept up on the mice that things changed. By the ripe old age of two, the SIRT3-deficient mice had significantly fewer blood stem cells and decreased ability to regenerate new blood cells compared with regular mice of the same age.

What is behind the age gap? It appears that in young cells, the blood stem cells are functioning well and have relatively low levels of oxidative stress, which is the burden on the body that results from the harmful byproducts of metabolism. At this youthful stage, the body's normal antioxidant defenses can easily deal with the low stress levels, so differences in SIRT3 are less important.

"When we get older, our system doesn't work as well, and we either generate more oxidative stress or we can't remove it as well, so levels build up. Under this condition, our normal antioxidative system can't take care of us, so that's when we need SIRT3 to kick in to boost the antioxidant system. However, SIRT3 levels also drop with age, so over time, the system is overwhelmed," said Chen.

New 'Longevity Gene' Can Reverse Age-Related Issues In Mice

A "longevity gene" can help boost the production of blood cells by reversing the decline of stem cells in old age, a study suggests.

Blood-generating stem cells become slower in old age, increasing stress on the body, but infusing them with a gene linked to the ageing process can restore them to a more youthful state, researchers found.

The study, which was performed in mice, raises the possibility of new treatments for degenerative diseases which occur with age, such as Alzheimer's.

More research will be needed to determine whether the findings in mice also apply to humans, but scientists claimed they could lead to the development of a "molecular fountain of youth".

Scientists from the University of California, Berkeley found that SIRT3, a protein from a class known as sirtuins which has previously been linked to ageing, could actually help "reverse" the natural process.

They examined the functioning of blood stem cells, which help keep the blood system healthy, on mice which had lacked the gene responsible for producing SIRT3.

The study, published in the Cell Reports journal, showed that for young mice the absence of SIRT3 made no difference, but older mice without the gene had fewer blood stem cells and were less able to produce new blood cells.

This could be because older mice were more vulnerable to "oxidative stress", a harmful sideeffect of the metabolism, and needed their antioxidant system, which is boosted by SIRT3, to counteract it, researchers said.

When levels of SIRT3 were raised in older mice, their blood cells were rejuvenated and production of blood cells improved.

Dr Danica Chen, who led the study, said: "We already know that sirtuins regulate ageing, but our study is really the first one demonstrating that sirtuins can reverse ageing-associated degeneration, and I think that's very exciting.

Longevity Gene: Discovery opens the door to a potential 'molecular fountain of youth'

Jan. 31, 2013 A new study led by researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, represents a major advance in the understanding of the molecular mechanisms behind aging while providing new hope for the development of targeted treatments for age-related degenerative diseases.

Older and fitter? New findings from a UC Berkeley-led study could have implications for the development of treatments for age-related degenerative diseases.

Researchers were able to turn back the molecular clock by infusing the blood stem cells of old mice with a longevity gene and rejuvenating the aged stem cells' regenerative potential. The findings were published online on Jan. 31, in the journal Cell Reports.

"This opens the door to potential treatments for age-related degenerative diseases."

Chen noted that over the past 10 to 20 years, there have been breakthroughs in scientists' understanding of aging. Instead of an uncontrolled, random process, aging is now considered highly regulated as development, opening it up to possible manipulation.

"A molecular fountain of youth"

"Studies have already shown that even a single gene mutation can lead to lifespan extension," said Chen. "The question is whether we can understand the process well enough so that we can actually develop a molecular fountain of youth. Can we actually reverse aging? This is something we're hoping to understand and accomplish."

Chen worked with David Scadden, director of the Center for Regenerative Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital and co-director of the Harvard Stem Cell Institute.

Sirtuins have taken the spotlight in this quest as the importance of this family of proteins to the aging process becomes increasingly clear. Notably, SIRT3 is found in a cell's mitochondria, a cell compartment that helps control growth and death, and previous studies have shown that the SIRT3 gene is activated during calorie restriction, which has been shown to extend lifespan in various species.

'Longevity gene works, but you must eat right'

Two papers published in international journals by researchers from the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) have resolved the long-standing controversy about the gene SIR2, the researchers said.

The studies show that SIR2 has anti-ageing properties and can combat ageing and age-related diseases, but it works only on a low-calorie diet. The gene is found in living organisms, including human beings. The findings have been published in the January editions of Cell Reports and Molecular and Cellular Biology.

A low-calorie diet positively impacts this gene in the human body, which subsequently provides protection from diseases like diabetes, obesity, cancer, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and cardiovascular diseases, and promotes "healthy ageing", says the study.

The gene has been at the centre of a global controversy for many years, with one school of scientists saying it extends lifespans, while another school disagrees. The arguments questioned the relevance of expensive drugs to mimic the effect of this gene to defy ageing and age-related diseases. The new study shows SIR2 has anti-ageing properties.

"Our study resolves the hotly debated controversy about the role of SIR2 as a longevity gene. We have found that it may slow down the ageing process, but it may not directly increase the number of years one lives. We found a low-calorie intake has a significant impact on SIR2 protein and helps the body combat age-related diseases," said Dr Ullas Kolthur from TIFR's Department of Biological Sciences, and principal investigator of the study.

In a liver equivalent tissue, the gene helps in achieving metabolic and energy balance, and mediates beneficial effects throughout the body. The study, however, showed that high-calorie food adversely impacted the gene, and it was not able to protect the body from a series of diseases associated with old age and bad eating habits.

"We all have the genetic capability of living to 120. Doctors live to an average age of 56". Trillions are spent on healthcare. It is claimed we are living twice as long as our ancestors thanks to modern Medical science. A half truth at best. Because we are also three times as sick - thanks to an explosion in cancer rates, Diabetes, and a host of other diseases - a living death for a rapidly aging population.

Mary Fink: Avid volunteer, 104, said secret to longevity was helping others

At a party celebrating her 100th birthday, Mary Fink was asked about the secret to her longevity.

"She said, 'Helping others,' " recalled her son, Free Press attorney Herschel Fink. "I think it was also her remarkable outlook on life. She was a glass half full, not empty, person."

Ms. Fink, 104, of West Bloomfield died Monday at the Lakeland Center nursing facility in Southfield. She had been in remarkable health until a stroke late last week, her son said.

"I often asked people to guess how many pills a day she took. The answer was none, although she did take a baby aspirin every day," Fink said.

One of nine children, Ms. Fink was born in 1909 in a village near Bucharest, Romania. Her tenacity and independence showed at an early age, when her family hid in a cellar as bombs fell during World War I.

"She was probably, at that time, maybe around 9 or 10. ... She (told) about crawling out of the cellar and going to soldiers and asking for food for her family. And they would give her potatoes and things like that she would bring back," Fink said.

Ms. Fink and her family moved to the U.S. when she was 12. She later married a man named Harry Katz, who died while she was pregnant with Herschel. She got married again a few years later to Irving Fink, a widower with two children.

Ms. Fink worked for years as a bookkeeper, first at Hudson's in Detroit and later at a dental supply company in Royal Oak. Ms. Fink was in her 50s when she decided to finish high school so she could receive her diploma. She enjoyed working.

"She even lied about her age so she wouldn't be forced to retire too soon," Fink said. "She worked into her 70s."

In retirement, Ms. Fink spent much of her time helping others. She volunteered in an intensive care unit and then as a chaplain at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak.

Prograde Makes Longevity Easier

Studies are clear that a higher fruit and vegetable intake leads to a longer life span. Now Prograde Nutrition makes it easier to get both with its new drink, Genesis.

North Palm Beach, Florida (PRWEB) January 25, 2013

Prograde, a science-based health supplement manufacturer, unveiled its new flagship product: a health drink known as Genesis. Genesis is a green drink, meaning it's formulated with hefty servings of greens, vegetables and fruits. The beverage is meant to be consumed once a day, and can replace a large number of individual health supplements.

Everyone knows you're supposed to eat your fruits and vegetables, but that doesn't make it easy, said Jayson Hunter, head researcher with Prograde. Produce is expensive, it spoils quickly and a lot of the time it's not that appetizing. But if it can add years to your life, is it really worth skipping?

Hunter says that longevity is only one of the aims behind Genesis.

The number of ingredients we packed into this mix is unbelievable, he said. This one drink can replace a whole shelf of pill bottles, and believe me, it's going to taste a lot better too.

Aside from its vegetable extracts, Genesis contains a variety of high-antioxidant foods such as blueberries, pomegranate, green coffee berries, and acai. The formula also includes dietary fiber, and active probiotics that help the body absorb nutrients and resist illness.

Our goal from the beginning was to make something that blows away the competition, Hunter said. If your doctor recommends it, chances are it's in Genesis.

NEWPORT-The Cocke County Legislative Body approved a longevity plan during Tuesday's meeting that will provide $2,500 for 11 employees with more than 25 years of service to the county.

County Finance Director Anne Bryant-Hurst pointed out the creation of a longevity plan for employees from the Highway Department, Landfill and General Fund is designed like the longevity plans already in place for the Sheriff's Office and Cocke County Fire Department.

Bryant-Hurst, however, pointed out that employees who have served more than 25 years would be left out; in some cases, there would have been employees with less years making more money.

"They wouldn't get anything, now or in the future," she said. "If you implement this, they will get $2,500."

Born Jan. 5, 1913, Harmon was one of 10 children and grew up on a farm east of Norman, learning social skills and a work ethic that would serve her well in life.

A career woman, Harmon worked in retail sales at Rothschilds, an upscale Oklahoma City department store. She never drove and instead took the bus to work and anywhere else beyond walking distance.

I always enjoyed helping people and sometimes wish Id become a nurse, Harmon said.

Doing volunteer work and a having a sense of humor were two other factors in Harmons long life.

Harmon said she always dressed up and took good care of herself. She never smoked or drank alcohol. She ate oatmeal for breakfast every day and still enjoys her coffee in the morning.

Never married, instead Harmon plays Auntie to many nieces and nephews. For years, she also enjoyed the company of and caring for her pet dachshund.

Now, Harmon enjoys the social life at Grace where she shares coffee klatches with her friends and attending the many parties and events at the home.
