Last week saw the 50th anniversary of the recording of The Beatles first album "Please, Please Me". This set me thinking about the enduring legacy of The Beatles music as compared with the long tail of one hit wonders that typify the music business. Perhaps one single fact that we learn in business from the example of The Beatles is that managers (and people in general) are rather bad at foresight. Decca instead chose a group called the Tremoloes, who were local and would not cost as much money. In business, Sony missed the digital revolution probably because they had a record company.

HAWORTH Non-union employees who work for the municipal government objected to any ending of longevity pay for current workers a move that officials have considered.

Elizabeth Rosenberg, the Haworth Library Director, read from a letter from the nine non-contractual employees at the Feb. 13 council meeting to address their concerns about having longevity pay removed.

Rosenberg said the letter was written for all nine members in attendance, including the library employees and those at borough hall, who are full-time, as opposed to her speaking for herself.

"When were first began working for the Borough, some of us more than 20 years ago, we were offered financial compensation which was in most cases below industry standards for the jobs we were to perform with the understanding that the benefits promised would make up the difference in our compensation," Rosenberg said. "As these benefits were codified in the boroughs ordinances, we had no reason not to believe that these parts of our total compensation would be taken away later, after many years of dedicated service."

At the last couple of council meetings, the council discussed the possibility of changing longevity pay with one option being to remove longevity for new hires, or freeze it going forward for existing employees without taking away anything accrued.

Mayor John Dean DeRienzo has said he is against taking away longevity pay from the existing employees. Councilwoman Mary Anne Groh said taking away longevity pay would not automatically mean no raises, but instead employees could be given merit bonuses or raises.

Councilman Andrew Rosenberg said question 47 on the 2013 Best Practices Checklist asks whether the town has eliminated longevity awards, and at present the council has to answer with a "no," which negatively impacts the boroughs score, which in turn affects how much state aid it receives.

"The issue at hand regarding longevity is that the Governor, in setting Best Practice Standards for counties and municipalities, has suggested phasing out longevity pay, and it appears, based on the comments made at the last council meeting, that there is a consensus to end any longevity pay for future hires, although having said that, no formal vote has taken place," Councilman Anthony Volpe said.

"Where there appears to be potentially more debate is the notion of freezing longevity paid to current employees," Volpe said. "Essentially that would mean whatever longevity pay was earned up until a predetermined date by existing employees would [be] kept and no further longevity pay could be earned."

Andrew Rosenberg said the borough would like to retain more control.

Roundworms, also known as nematodes, live longer in colder temperatures. According to new research from the University of Michigan, this is because cold air acts as a trigger for a gene receptor -- TRPA-1 -- that, once triggered, sets off a chain of reactions that culminates in the activation of a gene known to be tied to longevity.

The findings contradict the previous understanding that cold temperatures promote longer lifespan because they put the organisms' bodies in a sort of frozen hibernation. The researchers showed that this theory can't fully account for the phenomenon; what's more, mutant nematodes that lacked the TRPA-1 channel, when chilled, actually had shorter lifespans than them TRPA1-positive worms.

So what does this mean for us?

Well, despite the basically zero things we humans have in common with roundworms, we house a human version of TRPA1 (distinguished by its lack of a hyphen).

The old theory for why roundworms live longer in the cold wouldn't have applied to us at all -- the worms are cold-blooded, meaning that their bodies take on the temperature of the environment, allowing for that hibernation-like state. Warm-blooded mammals such as ourselves do our best to remain at a constant temperature, so that particular strategy wouldn't work too well.

But if it's true that activating TRPA1 would set off the same process contributing to longevity in the roundworms, a case could be made for standing out in the cold. The active ingredient in wasabi and mustard oil acts as a trigger for human TRPA1 as well. So as an alternative, in the expert advice of lead author Shawn Xu, "Maybe we should be going to sushi restaurants more often."

File this one under the mostly hypothetical, for now. But we do know that mice (mammals) can live up to 20 percent longer when their core temperature is lowered by just .9 degrees Fahrenheit. And calorie restriction -- theorized to extend life -- also functions to reduce core body temperature. It's all, at the very least, intriguing. And, if you're not into the calorie restriction idea, potentially delicious: wasabi goes best with omega-3-rich seafood.

Feb. 14, 2013 Scientists have known for nearly a century that cold-blooded animals, such as worms, flies and fish all live longer in cold environments, but have not known exactly why.

Researchers at the University of Michigan Life Sciences Institute have identified a genetic program that promotes longevity of roundworms in cold environments -- and this genetic program also exists in warm-blooded animals, including humans.

"This raises the intriguing possibility that exposure to cold air -- or pharmacological stimulation of the cold-sensitive genetic program -- may promote longevity in mammals," said Shawn Xu, LSI faculty member and the Bernard W. Agranoff Collegiate Professor in the Life Sciences at the U-M Medical School.

The research was published online Feb. 14 in the journal Cell.

Scientists had long assumed that animals live longer in cold environments because of a passive thermodynamic process, reasoning that low temperatures reduce the rate of chemical reactions and thereby slow the rate of aging.

"But now, at least in roundworms, the extended lifespan observed at low temperature cannot be simply explained by a reduced rate of chemical reactions," Xu said. "It's, in fact, an active process that is regulated by genes."

Xu found that cold air activates a receptor known as the TRPA1 channel, found in nerve and fat cells in nematodes, and TRPA1 then passes calcium into cells. The resulting chain of signaling ultimately reaches DAF-16/FOXO, a gene associated with longevity. Mutant worms that lacked TRPA1 had shorter life spans at lower temperatures.

Because the mechanisms identified by Xu and his collaborators also exist in a range of other organisms, including humans, the research suggests that a similar effect might be possible.

The study also links calcium signaling to longevity for the first time and makes a novel connection between fat tissue and temperature response.

Researchers have known that lowering the core body temperature of warm-blooded animals, such as mice, by 0.9 degrees Fahrenheit can extend lifespan by 20 percent, but it hasn't been practical for humans to attempt to lower the core body temperature, Xu said.

"I've never been a big fan of the candy bag in the bullpen," said Thornton, who was listed at 6-foot-6 and 240 pounds last season and prefers an occasional bag of sunflower seeds. "Bobby sounds like he's the same way. He doesn't want us eating Butterfingers before you get in the game.

"You have to take care of yourself out there. Some guys have their own sugar rush. I don't understand it, but everyone is their own person."

Bulky Beckham: Second baseman Gordon Beckham added muscle to his upper body, even after hitting a career-high 16 home runs last season.

Longevity Global Inc Announces Discount on Stick Weld 200

Insurers are weighing a new strategy for coping with the cost of baby boomers living longer than expected: issuing bonds.

Banks began shopping at least two "longevity" bonds to potential investors in recent weeks, the biggest spurt of activity the fledgling market has seen. One is expected to close in late March.

The bonds are sold with assumptions about how long people in the issuer's pool will live. Bondholders receive regular payments, but may see their principal eroded if the issuer needs money to plug any shortfall in its reserves caused by longer life spans.

Corporate pension plans and life insurers pay for their own protection against longevity, through insurers and reinsurers, respectively. Those insurers and their reinsurers could then use longevity bonds to transfer some of their risk to investors.

The first longevity bond was a $50 million issue in December 2010 from Swiss Re's (SREN.VX) Kortis Capital Ltd. The bond matures in January 2017 and it priced at an interest rate of 472 basis points over the six-month London interbank offered rate, a benchmark.

The next came from Dutch insurer Aegon N.V. (AEG), which in February 2012 brought a EUR300 million ($402 million) longevity bond arranged by Deutsche Bank to cover EUR12 billion of reserves. Aegon is back with its second deal, investors said.

Chris Madsen, head of risk structuring and transfer at Aegon, declined to talk about future deals. "We have received requests from several investors to participate in the old transaction or in future transactions," he said.

The market hasn't seen regular sales, primarily because investors were worried about the length of the bonds and the lack of active secondary-market trading allowing for a quick exit, said Pascal Koller, who invested in the Kortis deal and works for $20 billion Swiss asset manager LGT Capital Management.

Mr. Koller called longevity bonds "the holy grail for banks."

Investors may be more receptive to a run of deals this year, traders say, because the bonds offer rich yields at a time when low interest rates and booming demand are keeping yields on other types of debt low, said Niklaus Hilti, head of insurance-linked strategies at Credit Suisse Asset Management, who oversees $5.3 billion.
