In our Wednesday edition, we talked about the reasons to eschew Western diet, what with the findings of researchers who warn that eating a diet filled with trans fats could lead to premature death.

However, it is not enough to know which diet to ditch; we also need to know which one to adopt for healthy living.

A doctor of Chinese medicine, who is also an authority in anti-aging medicine, Mao Shing Ni, contends that human beings can find longevity at the end of the rainbow. By this, he means eating naturally colourful foods as opposed to those laced with artificial food colourings leads to good health, a precursor of sound aging.

Indeed, the new dietary guidelines from the American Dietetic Association encourage people to literally colour their plates with a rainbow of foods, especially to ward off health and beauty problems from heart disease to wrinkles.

Ni notes that these guidelines correspond to an age-old Eastern philosophy that one should eat foods of every colour each day. He says, Eastern wisdom believes that health and longevity depend on a balance of the five elemental energies represented by five colours: red, orange/yellow, green, white and blue/purple.

Nutritionists contend that both Western nutritional science and Eastern wisdom agree that when you eat foods that contain all the colours, you are working far more disease-combating nutrients and vitamins into your meal. Professor of Human Nutrition at Ambrose Alli Univeristy, Ekpoma, Edo State, Prof. Ignatius Onimawo, says vegetables, fruits, beans and legumes, nuts and grains all contain these colours in varying degrees, and are therefore worthy for the table.

Experts say this is probably because red is the colour that induces hunger, as it instantly attracts attention. Nutritionists say it also makes people excited, energetic, and increases the heart rate.

Ni explains that the pigments that impart the red colouring to many foods are known as anthocyanins, flavonoid compounds that fight free radicals and prevent oxidative damage to cells.

QUEBEC If proposals to fix the provinces ailing pension system become law, working Quebecers would pay $843 a year, and their employers would add an equal amount to fund a proposed new longevity pension.

And before the report was even presented Wednesday, Premier Pauline Marois said legislation to do just that is being prepared and would be presented soon.

Marois called for unanimity among all parties in the assembly, to protect the retirement of those who have contributed all their lives to retirement plans and others who have not, who need more support.

The longevity pension is the main recommendation in a 219-page report presented Wednesday by seven pension experts after 18 months of behind-the-scenes consultations and deliberations.

Benefits under the new plan would be paid starting at age 75 on top of federal Old Age Security and existing Quebec Pension Plan benefits, adding as much as $14,564 a year to a pensioners income.

Quebecers are retiring earlier and living longer, putting unsustainable pressure on private pension plans.

The panel of experts was named by the Liberal government of Jean Charest in 2011 because private pension plans in the province have a shortfall, which has grown to $41 billion, between the money they have and the pensions they are committed to paying out.

But the panel, headed by Alban DAmours, former head of Quebecs Desjardins financial co-operative movement, broadened its focus to the restructuring of the provinces pension regime, looking 40 years ahead.

The looming problems are considerable.

The proportion of Quebecers working and paying taxes will drop to two working Quebecers for everyone over 65 by 2030.

‘Longevity pension’ would cost working Quebecers $843 a year

Selectmen say a bylaw entitling town employees to longevity pay is no longer necessary.

Vice Chairman Robert Kimball said the bylaw was created when he served on the finance committee in the 1980s.

This was prior to the adoption of unions, it was important for employees to have some security, he said. This was also an effort to keep people in their jobs as long as possible.

The conversation came up at the boards April 11 meeting because an article is set to appear on the Town Meeting warrant in May asking voters to increase the amount of longevity pay town employees receive.

Currently the town pays the following in longevity pay in annual installments, after five years of working for the town an employee receives $150, after 10 years, $200, after 15 years, $250, after 20 years, $300 and after 25 years, $350.

The article is asking to change the compensation amounts to the following, after five years, $550, after 10 years, $650, after 15 years, $750 and after 20 years $850.

I dont believe in longevity pay, I think its a waste of taxpayers dollars, Kimball said. Im not going to support it because in a year from now well be back negotiating contracts. I dont think this is a good idea.

Selectman Bradford Bramwell said employees should be compensated based on their performance, not how long they have worked for the town.

Its nice to have people stay around for a long time, but its also nice for them to have job security for a long time, he said.

Norton board questions longevity pay

PARKERSBURG - An ordinance on longevity pay for employees will go to a fourth reading after reverting to its original form.

Parkersburg City Council voted 6-2 Tuesday evening to indefinitely suspend longevity pay, with council members John Kelly and Roger Brown voting against. Councilwoman Kim Coram was absent.

The longevity pay ordinance was amended last week during a second reading to repeal rather than suspend longevity pay at the behest of Kelly. The ordinance also had language added requiring the city's Personnel Committee to meet annually to review employee job descriptions and pay.

Tuesday's meeting began with Mayor Bob Newell asking council to reconsider the repeal, saying it was done incorrectly and harmed employees. He asked for the ordinance to be amended back to its original form or to have it sent to committee for discussion.

"Last week's motion was unnecessary and confusing," he said. "I'm not sure members knew exactly what they were voting for."

Newell said many council members and administrators were told of the proposed change only minutes prior to the last meeting. He also said the move to repeal was not given the consideration or discussion it deserved.

"This was not fair to the employees or as importantly not fair to the citizens you serve," Newell said. "The motion was an unnecessary blow to the morale of city employees. City council has repeatedly said to city employees that the suspension of longevity was a temporary measure necessary because of the recession. To eliminate it completely is being less than honest to the employees."

At times the series of motions and votes seemed more like a volley at a tennis match.

When council reached the third reading of the ordinance, Kelly quickly asked for a vote to approve, but Councilman John Rockhold proposed an amendment returning the ordinance to its original form. That amendment passed 5-3, with Brown, Kelly and Councilman J.R. Carpenter voting against.

STATE COLLEGE -- Like a fall ago, Ty Howle expects to short-snap for placement kicks when Penn State opens its season this August at MetLife Stadium against Syracuse. It's during regular offensive series that the fifth-year senior will line up in a different spot.

Howle rotated between guard spots for much of the 2012 season,occasionallyseeing work at center when the now graduated Matt Stankiewitch was not in the game.

Those times were few and far between, though. But that doesn't mean Howle is completely inexperienced at the spot, and that's a plus, as he will be called on to fill the big shoes Stankiewitch left behind this fall.

"I'm going to come in and play aggressive, and give it everything I have every game," Howle said.

"Like a lot of guys in this senior class now, we only have one more season left. We're trying to make it the best we can, and start fast and get it going."

The move to guard under head coach Bill O'Brien was the first time Howle says he has moved away from the center position. having learned it inside and out from a tenure in the middle that began in middle school and carried right through high school and his first three seasons at University Park.

Longevity often gives one a huge advantage in any particular field, and Howle sees it no differently on the field in which he operates. He noted that he already knows how to handle the checks and calls of O'Brien's system, and of course has perfected the art of snapping, as well.

An extra layer of comfort can be found in the fact that this is his second year under line coach Mac McWhorter's guide and O'Brien's scheme, but the senior was also quick to note that, unlike many of the skill players, his and the lines transition from the late Joe Paterno's offensive attack to O'Brien's was not too difficult.

It's a point worth making, considering Howle spent the first three games of 2012, plus summer camp, on the mend with an arm injury that he suffered shortly before camp kicked-off that kept him in a sling in the early-goings.

"It wasn't too much of a transition. Everything ... you can skin a cat a thousand ways, and we have done this our whole college careers," he explained.

Scientists have for the first time decoded the genome of a turtle, unlocking clues to their longevity and ability to survive without oxygen, an attribute that could someday be used to help humans.

The research team included scientists from Washington University School of Medicine and St. Louis University as well as the University of California at Los Angeles. Their analysis is available online in the journal Genome Biology.

In science, turtles are a bit of an enigma. Their distinctive body design with a sharp beak instead of teeth and protective hard shell has changed very little over the past 210 million years. They can live up to four months with no oxygen while hibernating in ice-covered ponds. And while most small animals have short lifespans, a box turtle roaming your backyard can live more than 100 years.

They may be slowly evolving, but turtles have developed an array of enviable features, said senior author Richard Wilson, director of Washington Universitys Genome Institute. They resist growing old, can reproduce even at advanced ages, and their bodies can freeze solid, thaw and survive without damaging delicate organs and tissues. We can learn a lot from them.

Researchers sequenced the genome of the western painted turtle, which lives in freshwater ponds and streams and is the most widespread turtle in North America. What they found was that the creatures unique physiological adaptations are not from novel genes; but from activating genes common to most vertebrates, including humans.

This is a back-door route for turtles to evolve, said co-author Patrick Minx at he genome institute. Rather than evolve new genes, they adapted existing genes for new uses.

The scientists identified 19 genes in the brain and 23 in the heart that are activated in low-oxygen conditions, including one gene that increased nearly 130-fold. These genes are also present in humans and could be important in treatments to protect the heart and brain from oxygen deprivation during a heart attack or stroke.

Their study also showed just how slowly turtles evolve about one-third the rate of humans and one-fifth the rate of the fast-evolving python. The sequencing also puts to rest the argument over where turtles fall in the tree of life. Scientists found they are most closely related to crocodiles and birds, and not lizards and snakes.

Scientists will next try to better understand how the genes work together to protect organs during oxygen deprivation. They can also use the genome information to study other traits such as longevity.

How can their tissue and their cells survive so much longer? said co-author Wesley Warren, also at the genome institute. Thats why this genome is important, for scientists to have access to the entire sequence, so we can start understanding these mechanisms.

Turtle genome offers clues to longevity, surviving without oxygen

PARKERSBURG - An ordinance on longevity pay will go to a third reading after city officials approved a heavily amended version Tuesday evening.

City Council was set to approve a second and final reading of an ordinance to suspend employee longevity pay indefinitely. The ordinance included an option for council to bring the ordinance back for consideration at a later time.

Prior to the vote, Councilman John Kelly put forth an amendment repealing longevity pay rather than suspending it. Kelly said he has seen too many ordinances kept "in limbo" by past councils, and said this was a moment to act decisively.

"I really feel when we are going to do away with something we need to just get rid of it rather than suspend it," he said.

Councilwoman Sharon Lynch, who heads the city's finance committee, asked Kelly to add language to his amendment requiring the committee to annually review employee job descriptions and pay.

Lynch said in some years the finance committee did not meet at all, and she feared employee pay could be ignored without the automatic increases provided by longevity pay.

Kelly agreed to the change, calling for a repeal of longevity pay and requiring the finance committee to meet at least once a year to review employee job descriptions and pay.

Mayor Bob Newell asked council to reconsider the changes, saying longevity pay had been suspended due to economic conditions both nationally and locally.

"The intent was never to take it away permanently," he said.

NONAGENARIAN Tony Lee celebrated a momentous milestone in the company of family and friends, and proffered some advice for those seeking to emulate his longevity.

On his 90th birthday, the retired policeman said that being contented and happy about ones existence, leading a clean life, and surrounding oneself with friends, are key to aging gracefully.

Always be happy with what you have and never yearn for other things. Dont look back to the past nor into the future, for your life is now. Live it with no regrets, he said.

Lee, who has been married 64 years to wife Suzanne, 88, still enjoys an active social life, has regular exercise sessions, and spends hours on the computer surfing the Internet.

Each morning, I thank God for my first cup of coffee, the computer that I had to learn using at the age of 75, and a lovely wife who says I spend more time on the device than I do with her.

Weve had many adventures together and I treasure every moment of it, he quipped during the birthday gathering at a restaurant in George Town recently.

He said that longevity has been a blessing, and it is a gift he intends to make the most of. He urged people to cherish the goodness around them for it keeps one young at heart.

There is nothing better to wish for than a long, healthy life. Because good health is your wealth, he added, eagerly looking forward to his 100th birthday.

Lee later went up on stage to serenade his guests with a several melodies before making a wish, blowing out the candles and cutting his elegant birthday cake.

Youngest daughter, Veronica Ann, 57, said her father, who was born in Seremban but moved to Penang after retiring from the police force, had always been the life of the family.

May seeks longevity in Japan

Ben May will call time on his six-year Super Rugby career at the end of the Hurricanes' current campaign.

The 30-year-old prop has signed a two-year deal with Sanix and will leave at the conclusion of the 2013 Super Rugby season.

The 2012 Maori All Blacks player revealed he decided a few years ago that when he reached 30 he would start to look at his options.

"I came down here [to the Hurricanes] last year for a last opportunity to give everything I had to a franchise in New Zealand," May said. "I've really enjoyed my time here. Obviously it's still going and that's my main focus at the moment. But once I put the feelers out there something came pretty quick. It's good to get it signed up and done and dusted pretty quickly."

May also had offers from Europe but felt the type of rugby and the amount of games played in the Northern Hemisphere wouldn't suit him at this stage in his career.

"They play a lot of footy over there and it's tough footy. I'm not saying Japan's not but it's a lot less games and just a different experience I think."

May's announcement came on the same day as former All Blacks lock Anthony Boric and ex-All Blacks fly-half Stephen Donald announced their moves to Mitsubishi. The Chiefs' Richard Kahui and Lelia Masaga are also on their way to Japan at the conclusion of Super Rugby.

"I think we can offer things over there in terms of experience in the Southern Hemisphere game and taking that up there," May said of the number of New Zealanders signing for Japanese clubs. "[We can fulfil] leadership roles and it's also a lifestyle choice. Super Rugby is not getting any easier. It's bloody tough and it's tough to keep the body in check to play every week."

May wasn't sure whether his deal with Sanix, which he said was "a little bit more" in money terms than a New Zealand contract, would be his last one.
