Merrill Lynch Study Examines Americans’ Perspectives on New Retirement Realities and the Longevity Bonus

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

When it comes to financial goals, achieving peace of mind is seven times more important than accumulating wealth (88 percent and 12 percent, respectively) to adults age 45 and older, according to a new Merrill Lynch study, conducted in partnership with Age Wave. The study found that retirement has been redefined with people expecting to live and often work longer than any preceding generation, and taking different approaches to preparing for and living their best life during these years.

Boomers have always paved their own way, and are once again pioneering new territory, said Andy Sieg, head of Global Wealth and Retirement Solutions for Bank of America Merrill Lynch. They share a strong view that retirement is not an end but a beginning, an opportunity for reinvention. Their perspectives, concerns, goals and how they plan to achieve them are different. What they seek is clarity and confidence about what is possible in the context of their hopes and myriad uncertainties.

Completed in January 2013, the study is based on a nationwide survey of more than 6,300 respondents age 45 and older. Key findings were published today in a report titled Americans Perspectives on New Retirement Realities and the Longevity Bonus, which reveals new insights into peoples approaches to and thoughts about retirement, including:

Americans have mixed feelings about living longer and transitioning into retirement, said Ken Dychtwald, Ph.D., founder and CEO of Age Wave. While they welcome the extra time to pursue new interests and spend more time with family and friends, they are concerned about outliving their assets and experiencing a serious health disruption. Even those who have saved adequately can be anxious and often overwhelmed by this complexity and the unknowns they face.

The study also offers new insights about sources of concern and the need for guidance, including:

Most people understand that retirement planning is not a once and done proposition, said David Tyrie, head of Personal Wealth and Retirement for Bank of America Merrill Lynch. Where guidance is needed most is helping people understand how all of these variables and decisions work together over time. At Merrill Lynch, we are developing a new approach to help people carefully consider nearly all aspects of their life when planning for and living in retirement, including health care costs, family, giving, home, work, leisure and finances.

Methodology Americans Perspectives on New Retirement Realities and the Longevity Bonus is based on a national public opinion poll conducted online by Harris Interactive. The Merrill Lynch survey was completed from December 2012 to January 2013, in partnership with Age Wave, and included more than 6,300 respondents age 45 and older. Findings are based on 3,002 responses from the general population. In addition, select study findings are based on an oversampling of an additional 3,005 affluent respondents with $250,000 to $3 million in investable assets (including liquid cash and investments, but excluding real estate). The remaining 320 interviews included an oversample among 60- to 70-year-olds. Results were weighted as needed for age by gender, education, race/ethnicity, region and household income. Propensity score weighting was also used to adjust for respondents propensity to be online. No estimates of theoretical sampling error can be calculated.

Huntsville Fire Fighters Association seeks longevity pay hike for 1,900 full-time city workers

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama - More than 1,900 full-time Huntsville city employees would see a significant bump in longevity pay under a proposal going before the City Council this week.

The Huntsville Fire Fighters Association is asking the council to ramp up longevity pay over the next three years to bring Huntsville more in line similar-sized cities across the Southeast.

Fire Fighters Association President Stephen Jones said the current longevity pay plan - which provides an annual benefit of $60 to $570, depending on seniority - has been static since 1968.

"It's been 45 years," Jones said Monday. "We are behind other cities. It's past time to address it."

As things stand, only employees with five or more years of continuous, full-time service are eligible for the annual longevity benefit. Those with five to nine years of service get $60; 10-14 years of service, $120; 15-19 years of service, $210; 20-24 years of service, $300; 25-29 years of service, $390; 30-34 years of service, $480; and 35 years or more, $570.

Human Resources Director Byron Thomas said longevity pay costs the city about $280,000 annually.

The firefighters association would like longevity pay benefits to kick in following the first year of continuous service to the city - and at a much higher rate.

The group is suggesting $27 for every year of full-time employment beginning Oct. 1, increasing to $45 on Oct. 1, 2014, and to $63 on Oct. 1, 2015.

A Huntsville employee with 10 years of service would see his or her current $120 longevity benefit jump to $270 this fall, $450 the following year and $630 in October 2015. A 20-year worker who now gets a $300 longevity benefit would be paid $1,260 at the end of the proposed three-step increase.

The City Council could vote on the revised longevity plan at its Thursday meeting, which starts at 6 p.m. on the ground floor of City Hall, 308 Fountain Circle.

Commercial cinema guarantees career longevity: Swara Bhaskar (Interview)

New Delhi, May 5 (IANS) She took the road less travelled when she made her debut with an offbeat film like "Madholal Keep Walking" in 2010. Promising actor Swara Bhaskar now admits she is taking "better than baby steps" towards commercial cinema, which she believes, opens the gates to a larger audience - and adds longevity to an actor's career.

That she went on to play second lead in a highly commercial flick like "Tanu Weds Manu" after "Madholal Keep Walking", is also a sample of Swara's versatility, which she further proved with the early 2013 release "Listen... Amaya".

"While my first film was 'Madholal Keep Walking', but the film that gave me my identity as an actress was 'Tanu Weds Manu', which was a full-fledged commercial venture and a huge hit. 'Listen... Amaya' received critical acclaim.

"Now I'm awaiting the release of 'Aurangzeb' and 'Raanjhnaa', being produced by two of the biggest banners in the industry - Yash Raj Films and Eros (Entertainment), respectively. I think I'm taking better than baby steps (towards commercial cinema)," Swara told IANS in an email interview.

Moreover, she believes the categories of "experimental" and "commercial" cinema per se, are "fast dissolving" in the Mumbai film industry. "But yes, I would say for sure that commercial cinema guarantees vastly larger audience and longevity of career to an actor," she added.

The 25-plus actress also pointed out how it is a misconception that "strong and good roles for female characters are just found in experimental cinema".

"Commercial films have also given us strong female roles, like Geet in 'Jab we Met', Vidya Baghchi in 'Kahaani', Suzanna in '7 Khoon Maaf', and if we go back, Anarkali in 'Mughal-e-Azam', Radha in 'Mother India' and Rosie in 'Guide'.

"These were hugely successful commercial ventures. In my own body of work, one of my most fun and challenging roles has been that of Bindiya in the forthcoming film 'Raanjhnaa'," she said.

"Raanjhnaa" is the much-talked about Anand L.Rai-directorial, featuring Sonam Kapoor and southern star Dhanush in key roles. Swara is currently dubbing for it.

Terming her role "amazing", she said: "I play Bindiya. It's a part beautifully etched out by writer Himanshu Sharma and lovingly directed by Anand sir. Bindiya is probably the most fun character I've ever essayed in my career so far."

Growing old vs active longevity

May 03, 2013

Different parts of our body regenerate and age differently for the duration of our natural lifespan. Ageing can be normal, can be accelerated or can be delayed the phenomenon otherwise known as anti-ageing.

In a previous article on nutri-genomics, we discussed the predispositions of our genes and how our lifestyle can influence how our body performs in terms of health. So how should we manage our lifestyle in order that we can better manage our delayed ageing?

In a best case scenario, a typical person ages at a normal rate but in most cases this happens at an accelerated rate. Our individual and unique genetic profile also means that all of us require a personalised delayed ageing or anti-ageing plan for successful ageing.

A successful ageing plan would ideally be evidence-based with suitable outcomes rather than just controlled trials with results. Therefore our plan would ideally be based on extending lifespan with optimal health that we have defined as active longevity.

Active longevity fulfils our desire to stay young, be beautiful and energetic synonymous with the prime of our lives.

Active longevity is achievable with the latest findings of how our body heals with peak performance and the technological advantage to achieve it.

The world population is advancing at a rapid pace and with families getting smaller by the decade and where within another generation, there will be two elderly to every child.

Wellness will not be attained by popping a pill for every illness and it is critical that we take action now for our personal well-being.

Amazon Promises Longevity

By Lennox Yieke - May 2, 2013 | Tickers: AMZN, AAPL, EBAY | 0 Comments

Lennox is a member of The Motley Fool Blog Network -- entries represent the personal opinion of the blogger and are not formally edited.

When you talk about tech, you talk about high risk, high reward. Tech is what you use today and throw away tomorrow. Recall the pager? At one time, owning one was the in thing. Now, however, walk around with one and you will be hit with comments like, Hey friend, the 90s called, they want their pager back.

The tech sector is by far the most volatile area to invest your money in. In fact, renowned value investor and multi-billionaire Warren Buffett knows this. He has recurrently avoided tech stocks and has, on several occasions, publicly said that he was not in a position to predict the future of social-media giant Facebook and iPhone-maker Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL)). Buffetts only prolific bet on tech was his huge 2011 IBM buy; a $10.5 billion buy that secured him a 5.4% stake in IBM.

Despite the volatility in tech, I personally believe that there are a few players with predictable futures; tech players that not only have forward-looking prospects but that also exude the all-important element of longevity. One such player is Amazon.com (NASDAQ: AMZN)).

I know whats going through your mind right now. Isnt that the stock that saw its past quarters net income drop a staggering 37%? Yes it is. However, the decrease in profit was a sacrifice that, in my opinion, signals the companys inclination toward long-term growth.

Tradeoff between immediate returns and long-term growth

As ancient philosopher Plato would have put it, "better be ignorant of a matter than half know it." Amazons 37% decline in profit did not happen without good reason. In fact, the companys top line increased notably, gaining 22% year-over-year to come in at $16.1 billion from $13.2 billion a year earlier. The reason behind the strained margins was the managements conscious decision to spend more on growth-disposed projects.

One such project is the building of distribution warehouses throughout the country. These warehouses are close to key metropolitan areas such as New York and San Francisco. The building project has gone on for a while now, and more and more warehouses are popping up throughout the country.

Whats the catch with huge brick-and-mortar establishments?

The Apprentice Is Here To Stay! Lord Alan Sugar Believes Show Has 'Longevity'

BBC Pictures

The new series of The Apprentice may be about to begin but it won't be the last series of the popular business reality TV show as Lord Alan Sugar has claimed that the show is here to stay because it has "longevity".

Admitting that whilst he enjoys making the show, the decision to continue to make it is down to the BBC, Lord Sugar told EntertainmentWise at the show's press launch:

"The BBC are the ones who make the decision on this and like any product - and this television programme is a product - they will make a decision on how long it goes by simply the reaction to it in the market place.

"I think The Apprentice has got longevity in it and I think that as long as we can continue to make it interesting with different characters. Every year we get a different bunch of people and a different bunch of scenarios."

Lord Sugar believes The Apprentice is here to stay! (BBC Pictures)

Admitting that the tasks are more than likely to stay the same, Lord Sugar who was joined by Karren Brady and Nick Hewer continued: "It is difficult with the tasks because they're either selling, buying or negotiating - that's never going to change because that's business. We try to make it more interesting but at the end of the day it's all down to the characters and the candidates and if it's interesting television that the BBC will continue to commission it."

However, the business mogul was quick to note that whilst Junior Apprentice has racked up another BAFTA TV nomination, the BBC still decided to pull the plug on the show. He said: "Interesting enough the Young Apprentice has been nominated for a BAFTA for the second time and the BBC commissioners have decided to not commission it.

"There's some logical thinking there. they could have explained it to me though."

Healthy body, mind the key to longevity?

Few things keep Janet Papelian from attending dancercise and aerobics classes at the Coral Gables Youth Center four times a week. Certainly not her age.

The 75-year-old says she feels more like a 50-year-old.

Papelian also enjoys the Current Events class offered at the center, which covers news items and encourages discussion, helping to keep the mind engaged.

The classes are very, very good and exactly what people like us [seniors] need, she said.

Many studies have linked longevity to maintaining a healthy body and mind. When it comes to the mind, many factors play a role, including genetics, lifestyle, diabetes, head traumas, and drug use.

The brain is unique in that we are born with all the cells were going to have, and we lose some everyday, said Dr. Allan Herskowitz, medical director of Neurological Services at Baptist Health Neuroscience Center. There are many factors that all play a role in cells deteriorating at a higher rate.

So what can a healthy person do to keep the mind sharp for as long as possible?

Herskowitz advises staying physically active and exercising the brain.

In South Florida, several centers and institutions offer a variety of classes, workshops and activities especially designed for seniors. And it doesnt have to be costly.

The Alliance for Aging serving Miami-Dade and Monroe counties, part of a national network of private nonprofits, provides a wide range of services and referrals for elders and caregivers. The organization especially focuses on serving low-income individuals.
