Liberty Ranch 2013 graduation venue has been picked

Class of 2013 student body officers at Liberty Ranch High School have unanimously voted to hold the school's second graduation at Memorial Auditorium.

The decision to hold last year's graduation there caused an upheaval among some school board members concerned with possible higher costs and accessibility of friends and family wishing to attend the ceremony.

To accommodate this school year's graduation location, the Galt Joint Union High School District board of trustees will vote tonight on whether to allow Liberty Ranch to switch graduation dates with Estrellita High School because of a scheduling conflict with Memorial.

Trustees will also be asked to approve the project costs for the graduation ceremony.

Any cost above $4,500 would be borne by the Class of 2013, according to a report to be discussed tonight.

The actual venue contract will come before the school board at a later date, according to Superintendent Matthew Roberts.

He said there was a school-level graduation committee of students, parents, administrators and teachers that researched venues this year. "It is my understanding that graduation has been set for this year," Roberts said.

Trustees Angela DaPrato and Kathleen Amos voted against holding last year's inaugural ceremony in Sacramento.

Amos said it would set a precedence for future graduating classes, and she took issue with holding the event outside city limits when there are city parks and other facilities available.

In the report regarding this school year's ceremony, Principal Brian Deis said students looked at four locations including not only the Liberty Ranch campus, but also Galt High School and the California Correctional Officer training facility on Twin Cities Road.

BOOGAARD: Liberty opened TRAC door

Here's what matters regarding Liberty-Bakersfield's 28-17 upset of a Bakersfield team then top-ranked in the Central Section and No. 5 in the state:

It virtually guarantees the Central Section's Division I No. 1 seed will come out of the Tri-River Athletic Conference because of Central's 10-9 win at Liberty on Aug. 31.

Further, the TRAC has swept all games of significance against the Southwest Yosemite League -- Clovis beating Centennial (28-17) and Stockdale (37-6), and Clovis North defeating Frontier (38-21).

So, regardless if Central, Clovis North and Clovis -- now ranked Nos. 1-2-3 -- exchange wins in the TRAC, the D-I seedings will refer back to those key TRAC wins vs. the SWYL.

Some other D-I thoughts:

While the weather has finally cooled, three weeks of heat is about to arrive in the TRAC: Clovis at Central on Friday, Central vs. Clovis North at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Oct. 18 and Clovis North at Clovis on Oct. 26.

Defense under coordinator Kevin Johns continues to drive the turnaround at Clovis, which is 23-8 in three seasons after going 5-26 in the previous three.

Friday's 20-0 win over Clovis East was the Cougars eighth shutout since 2010. And this one was led by lineman Nick Nevills, linebacker Jordan Harper and deep backs Jason Black, Alan Crowley and C.J. Broussard.

Clovis marches into Koligian Stadium on Friday in a forward lean, having beaten the Grizzlies 21-7 and 26-0 last year.

For all his success at Edison, Ricky Manning has a problem -- Sanger.

Woodrum leads Liberty over Gardner-Webb 42-35

LYNCHBURG, Va. (AP) -- Josh Woodrum threw for 373 yards and three touchdowns and running back Aldreakis Allen threw an option pass for another as Liberty rallied from an early deficit to edge Gardner-Webb 42-35 Saturday.

In this Big South opener between 0-4 teams, Woodrum out-dueled Lucas Beatty. The Gardner-Webb quarterback completed 27 of 32 passes for 383 yards but just one touchdown. Woodrum completed scoring passes to three different receivers. Two came in the fourth quarter: a 45-yarder to Ryan Ferguson, tying it at 35-all, then a decisive 5-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Apon with 5:11 left.

The most important completion might have been Allen's 15-yard option pass to Justin Gunn to cut it to 28-23. Then Woodrum hit Pat Kelly on a two-point conversion pass to draw Liberty within 28-25. Aldreakis also rushed for 97 yards and a touchdown.

Juanne Blount had two of Gardner-Webb's four rushing touchdowns.

Henry, Jackson run the show in Liberty's win

By RICK REMSNYDER

Published: 2:00 AM - 10/07/12

LIBERTY When Liberty star running back Kenny Jaycox was sidelined with a season-ending knee injury last week, Indians coach John Wilhelm only had to look across the dinner table to find a suitable replacement.

Wilhelm shifted stepson Ryan Henry from wide receiver to the backfield and the move proved to be a stroke of genius. Henry, who hadn't carried the ball all season, rushed for 200 yards on 19 carries and scored four touchdowns as the Indians stunned John S. Burke Catholic 53-19 in a Section 9 Class C contest Saturday afternoon.

"There was a lot of talk in the house about the game plan this week," Wilhelm said. "We knew when Kenny wasn't going to be able to play that kids were going to have to step up and move around. We decided to move him (Henry) into the backfield and give him some carries. It just kind of took off and we kept giving him the ball today."

Henry didn't object to the change when his coach/stepfather asked him at practice this week, even though he said they don't always agree on things.

"I think he's harder on me than anybody else," Henry said with a laugh. "But that's just my opinion. I'll do anything that needs to be done to help the team."

It was hardly a one-man show for Liberty, however. Junior quarterback Quinn Jackson rushed for 247 yards on 23 carries and scored three TDs for the Indians (4-2, 1-1 Class C Division I). Jackson also threw a touchdown pass to Henry. The pair also hooked up on a two-point conversion.

Henry scored his first touchdown on a 14-yard run and kicked the extra point for a 7-0 lead with 2:47 left in the first quarter.

Burke Catholic (2-4, 1-1 Class C Division I) cut the deficit to 7-6 on the last play of the first quarter when quarterback Robert Pezzullo found freshman wide receiver Chris Skermo with a 27-yard TD pass.

Nacua, Liberty Hold Off Coronado

Posted: Oct. 6, 2012 | 12:17 a.m.

Liberty's Kai Nacua did a little bit of everything on Friday night.

And when the senior launched himself toward the pylon from just inside the 5-yard line, he made sure his team finished with a homecoming victory.

Nacua's dive completed an 11-yard touchdown run with 9:38 to play that broke a 29-29 tie, and the No. 2 Patriots held on for a 35-29 win over visiting Coronado.

"It was a lead option," Nacua said. "And I saw the outside open, and I just started running at it. They tripped me up a little, and I saw the pylon and just dove into it."

The touchdown run capped an outstanding all-around game for Nacua. The Brigham Young-bound senior completed 14 of 22 passes for 223 yards, rushed for the touchdown, intercepted a pass on defense and recorded a tackle for loss.

"That's why he's a Division I football player," Liberty coach Rich Muraco said. "He makes plays. He stands out. He can do everything."

That included being named homecoming king at halftime.

"That was a cool experience," Nacua said.

Tenth-ranked Coronado (3-2, 0-1 Southeast League) stayed with Liberty (4-1, 1-0) all night thanks to a series of big plays.

Apple Maps Fixes the Statue of Liberty

Apple's promised updates to Maps in iOS 6 are starting to roll out, starting with the Statue of Liberty.

[More from Mashable: Steve Jobs Tribute MacBook to be Auctioned for Charity]

Until Friday afternoon, the Lady Liberty was a pixelated mess in Apple's new homegrown mapping app. Thanks to a server update, the statue -- and all of Liberty Island -- is now replicated in beautiful 3D.

Check out the differences below:

[More from Mashable: The Insanely Great Chart of Apples History]

Since releasing Apple Maps as part of iOS 6, Apple has faced criticism from its users and competitors because of the unfinished state of the 3D depictions -- as well as the uneven mapping data. Apple CEO Tim Cook apologized for the product, admitting that it "fell short" of Apple's standards.

Fixing the Statue of Liberty might not stop Apple from being the butt of industry-related jokes, but it is a sign that the product is getting better.

France's gift to America might have received a makeover, but its own iconic landmark wasn't as lucky. The Eiffel Tower in Paris remains an two-dimensional block of pixels.

Andy Warhol ‘Statue of Liberty’ May Fetch $35 Million

Andy Warhols 1962 Statue of Liberty could fetch more than $35 million when its auctioned on Nov. 14 at Christies in New York.

The statue is depicted 24 times, in four rows of six images. Silkscreened in red over green ink on white background, the work has a three-dimensional effect.

If you put on 3-D glasses, it becomes a grainy, black and white 3-D photograph, said Brett Gorvy, chairman and international head of postwar and contemporary art at Christies. Well be giving 3-D glasses with our catalogs.

Two other examples of Warhols 1962 experimentations with 3-D are Optical Car Crash, which is in the collection of the Kunstmuseum in Basel, Switzerland, and another Statue of Liberty from the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh.

In the 1960s, 3-D was known from the horror movies, Gorvy said. Warhol actually made a 3-D movie in the 1970s. It was about Frankenstein.

The choice of colors is connected to works in Warhols Death and Disaster series, which often are in strong greens or strong reds. A painting from the series, Green Car Crash (Green Burning Car I), (1963) sold for $71.7 million in 2007 and remains Warhols auction record.

Statue of Liberty had belonged to German entrepreneur Erich Marx, whose art collection became the core of the Hamburger Bahnhof contemporary-art museum in Berlin. The work was later acquired by the Daros Collection in Zurich, which sold it privately in the past decade to the current consigner, according to Gorvy.

Statue of Liberty will appear in the same sale as Warhols 1966 portrait of leather-clad Marlon Brando on a motorcycle, expected to bring about $20 million. Titled Marlon, the work comes from the collection of Donald L. Bryant, a trustee of the Museum of Modern Art who bought it for $5 million at Christies in 2003.

So far, the highest estimate of the November auctions in New York belongs to Rothkos 1954 No. 1 (Royal Red and Blue), valued between $35 million and $50 million. It will be offered at Sothebys evening sale of contemporary art on Nov. 13.

Muse highlights include Rich Jaroslovsky on technology, Manuela Hoelterhoff on the arts.

Liberty Knocks Off Gators

Posted: Oct. 4, 2012 | 2:02 a.m.

Liberty sophomores Tristan Hoyle and Matthew Drongesen had one objective in the third round of Wednesday's Division I Sunrise Region semifinal at Green Valley.

Their job was to stave off the Gators' Matthew Chen and Isaac Wellish in the final match. In doing so, the Patriots would punch their ticket to the team final.

"We knew going into the final game we had a good chance to break their serve," Hoyle said. "We were up close within the past couple of games, but we figured if we stepped it up and kept it away from their better player, we would have a good shot at it."

The duo did exactly that, outlasting Chen and Wellish 6-4 in the deciding match to secure Liberty's 10-8 victory and a spot in the Sunrise final against Coronado at 8 a.m. Saturday at Darling Tennis Center.

"We're happy with the win," said Liberty coach Kih Gourrier, whose team reached its first region final. "I knew it would be a close match; 10-8, 11-7, it didn't really matter as long as we came out with the win."

Hoyle and Drongesen went 3-0, including a 7-6 victory decided on the tiebreaker against Green Valley's Jake Johnson and John John. After splitting six matches in the first round, Liberty (10-2) grabbed four points in the second round to take a 7-5 lead.

"We know we had some important matches that we knew we had to take care of today to keep us on top," Hoyle said. "I figured right off the bat that we were going to have to go 3-0 in doubles for us to pull it off."

Liberty's Dylan Ihmels and Chitnarong Sopat each went 3-0 in singles.

The doubles teams of Chen and Wellish, Johnson and John, and Parker Phelps and Amar Shah each went 2-1 for the Gators (12-1).

Liberty boys soccer team looks for strong finish

Liberty senior Ian Larimer remembers fondly the 2010 soccer season, and he hopes history repeats itself two years later.

Larimer was a sophomore on the Hurricanes' team that qualified for the District 11 Class 3A playoffs as the No. 10 seed with a 10-8 record. Liberty then went on an unlikely postseason run that ended in the district final with a 2-0 loss to Easton.

Now a captain on a Liberty team fighting for a district tournament berth, Larimer sees some similarities between this year's team and that one.

The Hurricanes are 5-6-2 overall and 5-4-1 in the Lehigh Valley Conference. They host Whitehall today.

"We started that year 0-6," said Larimer, a sweeper. "Leading into that season there were a lot of long faces because we thought we'd struggle. But we moved some guys around, some younger guys stepped up and Richard Guedes was our leader offensively. Everyone wrote us off and that ended up motivating us. I think this year could be very similar."

For Liberty to be a district Cinderella, though, it needs to finish the season strong. Coach Jason Horvath's squad has five games remaining Whitehall, Bethlehem Catholic, Stroudsburg, Easton and Freedom and needs to win two conference games to qualify for the tournament.

Horvath and Larimer admit the season has been a disappointment to this point, but both coach and player believe there is still time to turn things around.

"It's been different than I expected the season would be," Horvath said. "We didn't get off to the best start and we've been clawing our way back slowly. We play to our potential in spurts. But we've made some changes in our lineup and in our formations, and I hope we're coming together now."

"This is a four-game week [Liberty lost to Northampton 2-0 Monday] and it's a big one," said Larimer, who moved back to his natural position of sweeper after starting the season at center midfield. "We're trying to win every game. From here on out is what counts."

Senior Sean McIntyre leads the Hurricanes in scoring with five goals and seven assists. Larimer has six goals and three assists while junior Tresor Butoyi has added six goals and an assist.

FCC seeks input on Liberty bid to control Sirius

WASHINGTON (AP) Federal regulators on Tuesday opened up a public comment period on an application by John Malone's Liberty Media Corp. to take control of satellite radio company Sirius XM Radio Inc.

The Federal Communications Commission said petitions to deny the application are due by Nov. 1. Responses to those filings are due two weeks later, with a final rebuttal to the responses by Nov. 20.

The FCC is looking into Liberty's proposed takeover of Sirius, in which Liberty already has amassed the equivalent of a 47.3 percent stake. If the commission approves, Liberty has said it will buy up enough shares within 60 days to give it majority control.

Liberty saved Sirius XM from near-bankruptcy in February 2009 by agreeing to lend it up to $530 million in exchange for preferred stock that amounted to a 40 percent stake.

Since then, Sirius recovered from its tailspin and as of the end of June it had more than 22 million subscribers.

Sirius shares rose 7 cents, or 2.7 percent, to $2.64 in afternoon trading. Liberty Media shares were up 34 cents at $105.11.

Liberty runs away with Rees Jones title at Haig Point

Liberty's Niklas Lindstrom took medalist honors with a 3-under-par total of 213 for 54 holes and the Flames had the top four individual scorers as they cruised to a 24-stroke victory over East Carolina at the fifth annual Rees Jones Collegiate Invitational at Haig Point Club on Daufuskie Island.

Host South Carolina finished third in the 12-team standings.

Lindstrom, a junior who didn't make the travel squad for this tournament a year ago, shot a 2-under-par 70 Tuesday to finish ahead of his second-place teammates by six strokes. Ian McConnnell, a junior from Riverview, Fla., who led after the first 36 holes with a 2-under 142, finished tied with Max McKay, a senior from Jacksonville, Fla., and Chase Marinell, a junior from Ft. Myers, Fla., at 3-over 219.

Liberty's team score of 6-over-par 870 in the play-five-count-four format was lowest in the tournament's short history. East Carolina rallied to overtake host South Carolina for second place with a total of 894.

The Gamecocks, who were led by Dykes Harbin, were third with 896. Harbin, a senior from Augusta, Ga., posted a 5-over total of 221 to take sixth place among individuals.

Defending team champion Kennesaw State (2010 and 2011 winner) finished eighth among the 12 teams with a 921 total.

"I wanted to break par today and finish with an under-par total," said Lindstrom, a 22-year-old who was a top-20 ranked amateur in Sweden before coming to school at Liberty in Lynchburg, Va., sight unseen in August 2010. "I've been working on my short game and my driving, and that has been the key. I played well in my last tournament and I felt I had my game going.

"Last year, I didn't play good enough and I was outside the team for this tournament. Now I have rebounded and it feels really good."

Lindstrom's went 73-70-70 and his final round was good enough to tie for low score on the day. It was one of just four scores under par for the third round. Overall, there were only seven scores under par for the three rounds on the 7,380-yard, par 72 Rees Jones-designed course and Lindstrom had two of them.

"I'm excited about how well the guys played," eighth-year head coach Jeff Thomas said. "This team has a lot of potential. I think we can be even better if everyone starts playing well. If they start pushing each other, the sky's the limit."

Sirius XM and Liberty Media Play Nice

There will be an interesting speaker at Liberty Media's (Nasdaq: LMCA) annual investor meeting next week.

Mel Karmazin -- Sirius XM Radio's (Nasdaq: SIRI) opinionated CEO -- will be a presenter at the Oct. 10 powwow.

The move makes sense at first. Liberty Media is nearing majority control of the satellite radio provider. It's simply a matter of time before John Malone's eclectic media conglomerate bumps its stake in the satellite radio provider above 50%, a move that will likely result in a shareholder spinoff. If Liberty Media wants to get its investors excited about the appendage, having Karmazin sell them on Sirius XM's potential is smart. If Karmazin doesn't want to see Sirius XM's stock take a hit after the spinoff, it's in his best interest to encourage Liberty Media investors to hold on to their eventual shares.

Karmazin speaking at the meeting makes sense for both sides. However, weren't the two factions in a war of words just last month?

Karmazin started things up recently.

"My instincts today are that Liberty does not need me at the company," he said at an investor conference three weeks ago, pointing out that he has historically been expensive to keep.

Karmazin's current deal as Sirius XM's CEO ends this year, and there has been no public chatter as to where things stand in terms of negotiating an extension.

"It's very clear to me that if I were Liberty, I would sit there and say, 'I'm not sure we need Mel.'"

Liberty Media CEO Greg Maffei seemed to agree a week later.

"The business will not fail without Mel," Maffei said at a different investor conference. "Graves are full of replaceable people."

Liberty Bank plans branch office near Southington YMCA

SOUTHINGTON A Liberty Bank branch is planned for the empty lot at 30-60 N. Main St. near the YMCA.

Joe Wren, a professional engineer with Indigo Land Designs, said Liberty Bank has plans for a 2,100-square-foot building with a two-lane drive-through. The bank is scheduled to open in late spring.

The Planning and Zoning Commission unanimously approved the plans last month.

Commission Chairman Michael DelSanto said hes not concerned about the two-lane drive-through causing traffic problems on North Main Street.

They situated the drive-through canopy in a way that theres not going to be congestion as people leave, DelSanto said. Therere always concerns about traffic.

Drive-through customers will exit onto High Street across from the YMCA, according to DelSanto.

Wren told commission members the new building would leave room for people to see a mural painted on the side of the adjacent building.

Commission Vice Chairman Paul Chaplinsky said he was pleased with Liberty Banks plans. The look of the brick and stone bank will complement the rest of the North Main Street streetscape, he said. Town officials say they are trying to create a unified aesthetic for downtown Southington.

Its a really nice fit, Chaplinsky said.

That area of North Main Street is slated for a number of changes as the YMCA continues with its expansion plans, although uncertainty over the brick Olney house has delayed the building of a parking lot. A court injunction has blocked demolition of the house until January.

Nearing 60, Lady Liberty stands where big orange once loomed

Sometimes extremely visible parts of our landscape become almost invisible to our eyes, as we drive past them daily. Over many seasons and many years, we tend to take our landmarks for granted.

Orlando's miniature Statue of Liberty offers just one example. Perched on a pedestal across from Lake Ivanhoe, Lady Liberty holds her torch aloft as drivers zoom by her on their way to Interstate 4.

She stands at North Magnolia and North Orange avenues and gets noticed mostly during the pro basketball season, when she's occasionally adorned in an Orlando Magic jersey.

But the statue didn't escape the curiosity of reader Patricia Lockwood of Orlando. It's been there ever since she could remember, Lockwood wrote in a recent email 20 years at least, she thought.

"When was it put there?" Lockwood asked. How did it come about?

Looking good at almost 60

Part of the story appears on a plaque near the statue, and it was fun to find other tidbits in Sentinel files and in Steve Rajtar's "Guide to Historic Orlando" (The History Press, 2006).

Our Lady Liberty, all 8 feet 4 inches of her, has watched over her busy intersection for almost 60 years. She was dedicated Nov. 11, 1953 years before Interstate 4 came through Orlando in the early 1960s.

The statue was one of about 200 such replicas installed across the nation in the 1950s through a Boy Scout program called "Strengthening the Arm of Liberty," Rajtar writes. The program was part of the Scouts' 40th anniversary celebrations.
