Liberty 76, Dream 67

UpdatedJun 9, 2013 7:19 PM ET

Just two days after losing by 19 points at Atlanta, the New York Liberty were determined to make up for their poor performance.

Cappie Pondexter and Plenette Pierson scored 17 points each to lead the Liberty past the Dream 76-67 on Sunday, handing Atlanta its first loss this season. Kara Braxton added 14 points to help New York (3-2) improve to 3-0 at home. Leilani Mitchell, the Liberty's 5-foot-5 reserve guard, had a team-high seven rebounds, Pondexter added six boards and six assists, and rookie Kelsey Bone also had six rebounds.

''We were all disappointed as a unit in Atlanta,'' Pondexter said. ''The way we played there was no excuse. We were not happy. They got going earlier there and this time we definitely wanted to take that away from them. I thought Kara Braxton, Plenette Pierson, Bone, (Toni) Young, they all came out and did a collective job as posts to neutralize their two bigs. Kudos to them, they did awesome.''

Pondexter, 3 for 13 from the field through the first three quarters, scored 10 points on 4-for-6 shoting in the fourth.

''I just kept telling myself, `No matter what, everybody struggles, just keep finding a way to get it done,''' she said. ''Inside, I kind of got going. I made a basket and things opened up offensively for me with my jump shot.''

Trailing by four points at the start of the fourth quarter, New York outscored Atlanta 25-12 over the final 10 minutes.

Young's jumper in the final minute of the third quarter pulled the Liberty to 55-51. Pondexter had a three-point play and Alex Montgomery made a layup with 8:10 remaining to put New York ahead one.

Thomas' bank shot gave Atlanta its last lead, 59-58, with 7:15 left. Braxton followed with a layup to put New York back ahead, Mitchell hit a 3 and Pondexter scored on a jumper to stretch the lead to 65-59 with 5:15 to go.

The Dream didn't get closer than four points again. Braxton made back-to-back layups and Pondexter hit a 3 to increase the Liberty's advantage to 72-61, their largest lead of the game.

''I thought we were a pretty sound defensive ball club,'' Laimbeer said. ''We cut off all the drives, took care of business with second shots in the second half. First half kind of hurt us, second half we got most of the rebounds.''

Liberty's Carson out for season with torn left ACL

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) -- Liberty forward Essence Carson will miss the rest of the season after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee.

New York made the announcement Sunday before playing Atlanta for the second time in three days. Carson was carried off the court with 3:56 left in the second quarter of New York's 75-56 loss at Atlanta on Friday. She was driving on a fast-break attempt when her leg appeared to give way as she attempted to make a cut near the basket. An MRI exam Saturday revealed the tear.

Carson said she knew immediately the injury was serious.

''When it first happened I knew that was it,'' she said. ''When you're a kid and you pop a pencil, snap it in half? It snapped and I felt it and it was excruciating pain. It wasn't even the type of pain that would allow you to cry. All I could do was yell and couldn't stop yelling. Once that pain quieted down, I was able to get up off the floor.

''I understood what was going on. ... I've had many teammates go through it and I've seen their road to recovery. I know it's something I can come back from.''

The former Rutgers star was averaging a team-high 17.7 points and 6.3 rebounds through the first three games this season. She has averaged 8.7 points and 2.5 rebounds in 172 career games.

''(She's) a solid defender, arguably our best defender out there, and she was averaging 17 points a game,'' Liberty coach Bill Laimbeer said. ''(She was) off to a good start, but that's the reality of professional sports. You have to move on.''

Laimbeer said he plans to start veteran forward Katie Smith in Carson's place and rookie Toni Young could see more playing time.

''We'll still play the same strategy on defense, the same structure that we have,'' Laimbeer said. ''Nothing changes. Just that we lose a very athletic player.''

COLUMBUS Liberty-Bentons Alex DeVincentis and Liz Streaker arrived at the Division II state track meet looking to push each other in the discus competition.

The Eagles seniors did just that and it led to DeVincentis claiming the state championship with a winning throw of 134 feet, 5 inches on Friday afternoon at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.

Streaker finished a close third with a throw measuring 128-8. Chardon Notre Dame Cathedral-Latins Kendra Zbinovec earned the runner-up spot with a throw traveling 128-9.

The Eastwood boys will run in the 400 and 1600 relay finals, and hurdler Devin Snowden still has hopes for an individual title.

Isaiah Conkle, Devin Snowden, Brennan Seifert, and Steven Bruning posted a swift time of 43.65 in a preliminary 400 heat before Gabe Fredericks, Joey Salinas, Derek Snowden, and Devin Snowden earned a finals lane in the 1600 relay after posting a time of 3:22.37 in a preliminary race.

Devin Snowden passed up Elidas anchor leg, Quentin Poling, during the final 50 meters to cross the finish line first for the Eagles in the second preliminary heat.

I saw him look back like he think hes got it, and I just thought Ive got to keep going, Devin Snowden said, of his strong kick to finish out his leg of the 1600 relay.

Devin Snowden is a finalist in the 300 hurdles after posting the second-fastest preliminary heat time (38.73).

Liberty Global chief Mike Fries sees broadband speeds going up and prices coming down

In his first interview since its $23bn takeover of Virgin Media (NasdaqGS: VMED - news) , the CEO of Liberty Global (NasdaqGS: LBTYA - news) tells Andrew Cave how the group will take on Britains big players.

In between announcing and completing Liberty Globals takeover of Virgin Media , chief executive Mike Fries has somehow found time for another job.

Im the lead singer in a CEO rock band, he laughs. Weve raised more than $2m for charity. We just played with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra and raised $850,000 in one night with a 'Bach to Rock concert.

The band is called The Moderators and is made up of other Denver-based business executives who first performed at a Christmas party five years ago.

We do it for fun, says Fries, 50. We do songs from U2, classic stuff from the Stones and Van Morrison and [the] 1980s stuff like Billy Idol. Its a real eclectic mix and you know the words to every song. We dont take risks.

That seems to be the mantra for the Virgin Media takeover, too. Liberty, which is based in Denver, Colorado, is paying $23.3bn (15bn).

However, in his first major interview since the deal completed at the end of last month, Fries stresses it will be business as usual.

Its about continuing the organic growth story Virgin has achieved, he says. Were not going to come in and mess with all the things that are working well.

Secondly, its about creating synergies out of the scale the deal provides because of our ability to centralise some things like programme acquisition and procurement of equipment and technology. Those two items alone represent probably $5m of expenditure a year.

About 16pc of Virgin Medias revenues comes from business-to-business sales, much more than in Libertys other European businesses. Virgin Media also has 3m mobile subscribers in the UK something Liberty doesnt have elsewhere in Europe.

Dream defeat Liberty, remain unbeaten

The Dream jumped to an early double-digit lead and never let up en route to a 75-56 thumping of the New York Liberty on Friday to improve to 4-0 on the season in front of 6,173 fans. Three of the Dreams four wins have been by double-digits.

We came out at the beginning with a game plan of trying to establish ourselves on the offensive end by running, Dream coach Fred Williams said. We wanted to get out in the passing lanes, and some of that created our offense in transition.

Angel McCoughtry stuffed the stat sheet for the Dream with a double-double, scoring 15 points and tying a career-high with 10 assists. She also had five rebounds and six steals.

Shes been working hard in practice, Williams said. Shes really a player that is trying to develop more passing to her teammates and going to the boards. If she continues that, its only going to make the team better.

Sancho Lyttle had a game-high 18 points, shooting a stellar 80 percent (8-of-10) from the floor. Erika DeSouza added 13 points and snatched six rebounds.

Williams credits the teams hot start to team chemistry.

I think its the overall practice we do and how they like playing with each other, Williams said. Thats evident in the combination of passes and having 20 assists per game. They really work hard in practice, and we get them prepared. I like a team to have a lot of energy, and that is what they are giving me right now.

The Dream again struggled for the 3-point line, shooting 21 percent (3-of-14) from behind the arc. But the Dream masks its lack of perimeter shooting by getting out in transition for layups. On defense, the Dream forced the Liberty into shooting 12.5 percent (1-of-8) on 3-point shots.

Kara Braxton was the only Liberty player in double figures, with 14 points and six rebounds. Alex Montgomery grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds.

The Liberty had 19 turnovers, which led to 14 Dream points.
