The Left’s Big Lie on Jefferson and Texas Board of Education

Obama administration preparing to Nationalize Educational decision-making

Texas Board of Education stalwart member Cynthia Dunbar was a guest on the Bill Bennett in the Morning show on the Salem Network, Wednesday morning. Dunbar explained in detail how charges that the right-majority Board sought to remove Thomas Jefferson from the State curiculum were completely and utterly false. TPM, Daily Kos and other leftwing blogs spread this story last week, which was picked up by major media outlets.

Dunbar detailed how the Board recommended moving the main body of discussion of one of America's "greatest Founding Fathers," from the chapter on the Englightenment to the chapter on the founding of the Republic.

This has prompted some Texas Democrats into calling for the elimination of the elected board. Additionally, liberal Democrats are calling for the decision making process of educational curiculuum to be moved under the auspices of unelected bureacrats.

From a release by the libertarian-leaning Americans For Prosperity (AFP):

AUSTIN – The Texas chapter of Americans for Prosperity denounces the promise of State Sen. Juan “Chuy” Hinojosa (D-Dist. 20) to abolish the elected Texas State Board of Education.

"State Board of Education members are elected, and last election, while Rep. Hinojosa received 124,456 votes, the average number of votes cast for a single SBOE member was more than twice that – 335,207," said AFP Director Peggy Venable.

"To suggest eliminating an elected body because you don’t agree with their decisions is un-democratic,” said Venable.

Americans for Prosperity’s members are pleased with the SBOE’s decisions regarding the social studies curriculum standards. We are disappointed that Democratic Gubernatorial candidate Bill White and others on the left have grossly misrepresented the board’s actions,” said Venable. “Sen. Hinojosa apparently thinks that if the voter-elected Board makes rulings that don’t fit his liberal agenda, then the Board should be eliminated.

Sen. Hinojosa is attempting to defy our state constitution and deny voters their right to have an elected body represent their interests regarding the public education of our children," Venable said.

The Texas curriculum battle is very important nationally, for other States follow Texas's lead. Dunbar was asked by Bennett what she felt might be the next move by the Left. She responded that the Obama administration may now seek to nationalize the process and standardize curriculum selection as a result of the Texas controversy.

Obama encouraging Corporate Welfare-ism: Qwest to go for big stimulus grant in Colorado

Melding industry with the State

Qwest is going for a healthy chunk of Obama stimulus funds. The large Rocky Mountain West firm is wanting the federal government assistance to extend its service into rural areas of Colorado.

The details from The Denver Business Journal bizjournals.com "Qwest seeks $350M from stimulus for rural broadband" March 25:

Qwest now will ask for the stimulus funds to cover 75 percent of the cost of a planned $467 million project to extend broadband service with download speeds of 12 to 40 megabits per second (Mbps) to more than half a million homes, schools, businesses and hospitals in rural communities in Qwest's 14-state service territory. Qwest would cover the remaining $117 million itself.

The stimulus funds would come from the "Broadband Initiatives Program" administered by the Rural Utilities Service, an agency of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The $7.2 billion program's goal is to promote efforts to expand access to tens of millions of people who lack broadband and who live within 60 miles of a city or town.

Originally, Qwest would have been eligible to have only half of its broadband infrastructure expansion project funded. Now, in the second round of funding, stimulus funding would cover up to 75 percent of the project if Qwest's application is OK'd.

The Libertarian Party of Colorado issued a statement on their blog:

There is no reason that tax payers should be forced to subsidize rural internet services. It is nice for farmers and other rural dwellers, but it is not really fair that they should pay less than the cost of service to them at the expense of the taxpayer. If they want this service than the only fair and right thing for them to do is either pay a premium and make it worthwhile for providers like Qwest to provide service in their area or to create a community co-op type of arrangement to get service by pooling resources with other rural people living nearby. the answer is not to turn to welfare to subsidize relatively well off people, and relatively rich corporations like Qwest.

Qwest is one of the largest employers in Colorado. They also do business in Montana, Utah, Wyoming and Nevada.

Have we libertarians been duped?

With the Health Care debate raging, the Obama administration snubbing Israel, and a gi-normous budget deficit getting worse by the day, this may seem like real insider basbeall stuff. And it is.

But this is a libertarian blog after all. And we aim to cover as much movement news in addition to the big stories as possible.

With that said, many of you may have been following the "Coffin on the lawn of Missouri Congressman" story.

A quick summary: Jim Hoft of Gateway Pundit and some Tea Party plus Pro-lifer demonstrators in St. Louis held a candlelight vigil in front of the home of US Rep. and Democrat Senate candidate Russ Carnahan. (He's in a tight race with Republican Rep. Roy Blount, though the very latest polls has Blount widening his lead to 8 points.) Well, Politico.com picked up on the story spinned from the leftwing blogs, that "Rightwing Protesters leave coffin on Democrat Congressman's lawn." They've since retracted the story. And to their credit at least one leftwing blog, has also admitted they got the story completely wrong.

But buried in their retraction is this interesting little note of great interest to movement libertarians, from Cleo Lio, Democratic Underground as relayed from Gateway Pundit

I am posting this because "I" posted the original thread of the coffin being left on Rep. Carnahan's lawn... It came to my attention via Dave Weigel who IS a progressive blogger...

Really, Weigel a "progressive blogger"? With a capitalized 'IS" no less.

I have to tell you, I've suspected Weigel to be a hard leftist for quite some time. He took a particularly rabid anti-Bush line during 2005, 06, 07 and 08 in the pages of Reason. Weigel is still listed as a "Contributing Editor" (bio page for Reason). Of course, in '08 5 of 8 Reason editors, including Weigel, famously backed Obama over McCain, and Libertarian Bob Barr. Weigel was one of those who praised Obama. He later got hired on by the hard left Washington Independent, but has still masqueraded as a "libertarian." He's also a frequent guest on MSNBC's Rachel Maddow.

If you read Weigel's writings these days they're almost universally anti-Tea Party and/or anti-Republican. Here's a sampling of some of the articles he's written:

"Anti-Health Care Reform faces steep hurdles"

"Sarah Palin: Newspapers That I Won’t Talk to Won’t Let Me Talk to Them"

And this little interesting tidbit from a post-C-PAC interview Weigel gave to the far left National Public Radio (NPR) in February:

Weigel says he doesn't have a problem getting access to leaders of the Tea Party movement.

On the Soros payroll?

I've heard from some that Weigel is a card-carrying member of the George Soros-opus. Admittedly, it's all been conjecture and hearsay.

But now a very well-respected and very popular hard left blog is openly calling Weigel a "progressive."

One has to wonder what his true libertarian friends feel about his progressivism. Or, even worse. How they must feel about all the insider information on the libertarian movement and other confidential information they may have shared with him over the years.

But you have to admit, it's a very clever way to infiltrate the Right. Call yourself a "libertarian." Gain libertarian cred by being officially affiliated with the much respected Reason magazine. Use that libertarian cred to gain insider access to the Sarah Palin movement, Tea Party, Bob Barr's Libertarian campaign for President, Ron Paul's Presidential campaign, and even C-PAC.

Rebecca Sink-Burris Announces a Run for At-Large LNC Seat

I am extremely pleased to announce the candidacy of a long-time LPIN activist, candidate and financial supporter for the position of Libertarian National Committee At-Large representative at the upcoming LP Convention at St. Louis.

Rebecca Sink-Burris has been a Libertarian Party member since the 1970’s and has served the LPIN in many capacities including Vice-Chair.  She has also run for U.S. Senate and was instrumental in helping us retain our ballot access when she ran for Secretary of State in 2002 gaining will over 4% of the statewide vote when we were required to gain just 2%.

I would strongly encourage delegates to meet Rebecca at the convention and ask her about the future of the Libertarian Party.

Having served on the board as an alternate and as a 2 term regional representative for one of our more effective regions, I have seen how damaging it is when board members don’t work well with each other, I want to continue to serve in order to help bridge the gap. I’ve been a Libertarian since the 70’s and have served the party by collecting signatures, taking on leadership positions at state and national level, running for office numerous times, including being the candidate for Indiana’s ballot access race. Steamboat Springs Republican Bob McConnell, who also has entered the race, called the bill a “major federal intrusion in our lives."

"I just think that we're moving in a tragic direction," said McConnell, an emergency medical technician.

He also mentioned the lack of tort reform as a shortcoming.

“The first thing I'll do in Congress is try to get it repealed," he said in a phone interview.

First hard evidence Health Care vote hurting Democrat candidates

Breaking News!!!

Libertarian Republican has learned that a soon-to-be-released poll conducted Sunday and Monday night by Public Opinion Strategies shows the following:

Republican challenger Adam Kinzinger leading freshman Democrat Rep. Debbie Halvorson by a margin of 44%-38%.

Halvorson voted in favor of the health care legislation. This is the first time Kinzinger has been ahead in any polling.

An additional finding:

Voters in the district are unhappy with the job President Obama is doing, as 45% approve of the job he is doing, and 52% disapprove. Nearly four in ten voters (38%) strongly disapprove of the job the President is doing.

Ken Spain of the NRCC commented on the results:

"If passing a government takeover of healthcare was supposed to solve all of the Democrats’ political problems, then this November is going to come as an horrific surprise. This is a classic swing seat that seemed to have trended away from Republicans in 2008 and was compounded by the fact that Illinois’ home state senator was running a winning campaign at the top of the ticket. Clearly, that is not the case any longer."

Former Libertarian Party of Illinois board member and current Republican Liberty Caucus of IL member Jeff Wartman of Chicago was one of Kinzinger's earliest supporters. In a separate article at LR back in July, Wartman noted:

I'm working on Adam's campaign and proud to see a pro-defense, pro-freedom candidate enter this race against the nanny-stater and Pelosi-clone Debbie Halvorson. Adam is an Iraq war Veteran and former McLean County Board Member.

The fight against the liberal Democrats starts in races like this one, and Adam needs support if he's going to win.

Students for a Libertarian Society fmr. leader praises Bush’s huge Human Rights win in Iraq

Inspired by Ayn Rand to lead a Worldwide Liberty movement

Jeffrey Scott Shapiro is a former libertarian youth leader. In the early 1990s he re-launched Students for a Libertarian Society (SLS), which had been active for some time in the 1960s and 70s as an alternative to the hard leftist SDS. Shapiro was also active with the Libertarian Party of Florida, and served for a time as an Intern at Libertarian Party national headquarters in DC. Additionally, he was active early on during the formative years of the Republican Liberty Caucus.

Shapiro had been largely inspired to libertarianism through the writings of pro-liberty philosopher Ayn Rand. His mother had been a fellow traveler in the famous philosopher's circles in the 1960s. A large portrait of Rand served as the centerpiece of the den of his parents' Palm Beaches area home.

Libertarian Mission accomplished in Iraq

Last week Shapiro was asked by Fox News to pen a commentary on George W. Bush and the War in Iraq; "At Last, Misson Accomplished In Iraq." Excerpt from Fox:

Today marks the seven-year anniversary of the Iraq War.

A few months after American forces finally crossed into the border of the oppressed nation, President Bush told the ‘National Endowment for Democracy’ that, “Iraqi democracy will succeed, and that success will send forth the news from Damascus to Tehran that freedom can be the future of every nation. The establishment of a free Iraq at the heart of the Middle East will be a watershed event in the global democratic revolution."

He was right.

Since America launched Operation Iraqi Freedom on March 19, 2003, we have... ended the genocide and torture of the Ba’ath Party, brought Saddam Hussein to justice, established a budding democratic society...

Certainly the transformation of an Iraq enslaved by the sadistic cruelty of the Ba’ath Party into a free society is a watershed event and one that represents a whole new era in the history of the Middle East. A free Iraq has, in fact, become a beacon of inspiration to the region.

That’s why, as Bush accurately predicted, the people of the oppressed Islamic "Republic" of Iran finally found the courage to resist the tyranny of Ahmadinejad when he stole the election last year. -- After all, seeing freedom in practice in a neighboring country is a lot more powerful than simply hearing about it overseas from banned news reports and books that occasionally find their way into the black market of Tehran.

Under the rule of Saddam Hussein women were frequently and lawfully raped in custody as a means of punishing their family members, prisoners were placed in acid baths, dismembered, electrocuted and confined in coffin sized boxes for unbearably long periods of time. Women were lawfully beheaded without trials as part of "honor-killings" and children as young as 10-years old were trained to use weapons in the "Saddam Cubs" youth paramilitary organization.

None of Saddam Hussein’s unspeakable cruelties would have ended and none of the great strides toward freedom would have been accomplished without the courage and conviction of President Bush and Vice President Cheney and their administration, our coalition forces allies and the brave soldiers who fought for a free Iraq. All of these people are heroes for ending one of the greatest political and human rights tragedies in recent history, and for helping Iraq become the newest state-member of the Free World.

Today’s free Iraq is a testament to the courage and conviction of both the American and Iraqi people who never gave up and never acquiesced to the cowardice of the detractors who accepted failure.

Honor Freedom and oppose Worldwide Totalitarianism

Today Shapiro head the nationwide movement known as Honor Freedom. The group lists an impressive number of members including libertarian media tycoon Andrew Breitbart, Lt. Col. Robert ’Buzz’ Patterson USAF and Bradley A. Blakeman.

President Bush was the right leader at the right time. He proudly led us in the aftermath and response to the attacks on America on September 11th, 2001. Although al-Qaeda declared war on America on our own soil in New York City, Bush successfully shifted the battle to our enemies on foreign lands which made us safer on our own.

The website features a Myth busters list which answers critics of the War in Iraq such as Myth #1 "The War in Iraq was an invasion, not a liberation," and Myth # and "President Bush lied about Saddam Hussein having the capability of building weapons of mass destruction" and also the Myth that Hussein had not ties to Al Qaeda.

Anti-Sharia Law bill passes overwhelmingly in Oklahoma Legislature

The bill prohibits Oklahoma courts from utilizing laws from other nations. The practical effect is aimed at Sharia Law. For example, courts in the United Kingdom have been giving increasing deference to Muslim rules and restrictions outlined in the Koran. Oklahoma legislators have sought to put a halt to any such consideration in the States' judicial system.

"The proposed amendment would prohibit all Oklahoma courts from considering the legal precepts of other nations or cultures, even in cases of first impression."

The vote in the House was 91 to 2. Both "no" votes came from Democratic Party legislators. The bill now advances to the Senate.

House Joint Resolution 1056 was sponsored by state Rep. Rex Duncan.

"Unfortunately, some judges in other states and on the federal bench have begun to cite international law in their court decisions, effectively undermining our own democratic system of government," said Duncan, a Sand Springs Republican and attorney who chairs the House Judiciary Committee. "Our nation’s laws were developed through a democratic process and should not be undermined by haphazard reliance on foreign rulings developed in autocratic societies. Oklahoma court decisions should be based on the U.S. Constitution, Oklahoma Constitution, and our state and national laws – period."

The proposed amendment declares that courts "shall not consider international law or Sharia Law."

Repeal Yes! But beware the Obamanista Viper in the Tent

Round One of the Socialized Federalized Medicine-Man fight is over.

As soon as President Obama signs on the dotted line, Round Two will be initiated with a herd of raging bull Attorney Generals (AG) from around the country; all in a charge at the red cape of the constitutionality of congress to mandate the purchase of health insurance by individual citizens.

It’s a set up guys. Obama and his brain trust are out in front on this one. They put the ‘thou-shalt-purchase’ clause in the bill deliberately knowing every freedom-loving, red-blooded Republican AG would charge. They intend to have the Republican’s object to this in bit-and-pieces instead of a full frontal attack that the ENTIRE Bill is unconstitutional.

We Republicans bit the bait real good, but, it was a Trojans horse covered with shiny stuff like the abortion debate; deliberately set to get our attention. While all along, ‘Obamanistas’ fully expect that the Supreme Court will strike down the parts that mandate a person will buy insurance or they will pay through the nose to BigFed one way or another. There are bigger problems ahead, so save some ammo.

We had a saying when I was in the desert in the first Gulf War, ‘It’s not just the mouse that ran through the tent you need to worry about – it’s the viper that’s chasing the mouse you better be afraid of.’

When the Supreme Court decision is finally made – with the anticipated ruling, the bumper sticker "I Heart Socialized Medicine" liberal crowd will pull out the already prepared Round Three plan: Public Option in tandem with the Federal Government picking up the tab incrementally to offset the loss.

"But, what else can we do? We can’t leave people without health care can we?"

Liberals will sob as the complete implementation of socialized; taxpayer health care is implemented with Under New Management Federal Clinic signs being put up over the old Mayo Clinic signs, and hospitals across the country, et.al.

It’s part of the plan. For example, do you believe that Obama just wrote that Executive Order about Federal Funding of Abortions in the eleventh hour before the vote? That thing was written months ago and held to the last minute to make it look like some kind of ‘real’ concession to the hold-outs.

The liberal guys are not some lightweights. They have a plan while we Republicans do a Saint Vitus Dance jerking around the details and nickel-and-diming our attacks that should have been coordinated years ago. It’s not like the Democrats didn’t start this with Clinton Care in the early 1990s.

Anyway, it’s critical that we need to understand their game and focus on a way to repeal this bill and counter it with workable market approaches to health care with the doctors providing that care and the patients at the center of gravity:

(1) States should implement; as difficult as it is, meaningful health care reform for its citizens at the appropriate level of government. Health Care is a real problem.

(2) States should intervene and represent any citizens of their state that the Federal Government decides to fine for failure to purchase insurance.

(3) States should facilitate competition in health care providers and health care facilities, and increase the number of students entering medical and nursing schools.

(4) Republicans better send ‘Constitutional Gun-Fighters’ and thinkers to Congress.

(5) States should band together – repeal the 17th Amendment, and take their Senators back. This action will give the states a place at the table in Washington and put teeth into State Sovereignty again.

If we thought the nightmare of the Federal ‘No Child Left Behind’ program was hard to deal with, just wait for General Hospital USA . Hold your ears and don’t dance to the liberal’s song.

Texas to lead Multi-state lawsuit to Repeal Obama Care

Democrats expanding "Socialism on American soil"

Governor Rick Perry released the following statement late Monday:

Unfortunately, the health care vote had more to do with expanding socialism on American soil than it does fixing our health care finance and delivery systems. The Obama health care bill undermines patient choice, personal responsibility, medical innovation and fiscal responsibility in America. As passed by the U.S. House, the bill will cost Texas taxpayers billions more, and drive our nation much deeper into debt. Congress's backroom deals and parliamentary maneuvers undermined the public trust and increased cynicism in our political process. Texas leaders will continue to do everything in our power to fight this federal excess and find ways to protect our families, taxpayers and medical providers from this gross federal overreach.

Now Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott will join with a number of other States to formally challenge the Health Care Reform Act. So far the list includes: Alabama, Florida, Nebraska, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Washington. (Virginia and Idaho are filing separate suits on their own.)

The Texas AG released this statment. From the Washington Examiner:

"To protect all Texans' constitutional rights, preserve the constitutional framework intended by our nation's founders, and defend our state from further infringement by the federal government, the State of Texas and other states will legally challenge the federal health care legislation."
