Should Libertarians Celebrate MLK Day?
Murray N. Rothbard put it well: "Scratch an egalitarian, and you will inevitably find a statist... ... flying in the face of their former supposed devotion to the absolute rights of private property, the libertarian movement has embraced almost every phony and left-wing "right" that has been manufactured in recent decades. ...I told two well-known leaders of the movement that I thought it had become infected with and permeated by egalitarianism...Further, I said that a good indication of this infection was a new-found admiration for the Reverend "Doctor" Martin Luther King. Absurd, they said. Well, interestingly enough, six months later, both of these gentlemen published articles hailing "Dr." King as a "great libertarian." To call this socialist, egalitarian, coercive integrationist, and vicious opponent of private-property rights, a someone who, to boot, was long under close Communist Party control, to call that person a "great libertarian," is only one clear signal of how far the movement has decayed. ...there is one excellent litmus test which can set up a clear dividing line between genuine conservatives and neoconservatives, and between paleolibertarians and what we can now call "left-libertarians." And that test is where one stands on "Doctor" King... ...Throughout the Official Libertarian Movement, "civil rights" has been embraced without question, completely overriding the genuine rights of private property... ...Part of #39;social tolerance, #39; of course, is ...

Nassim Taleb Talks Antifragile, Libertarianism, and Capitalism’s Genius for Failure – Video

Nassim Taleb Talks Antifragile, Libertarianism, and Capitalism #39;s Genius for Failure
Nassim Nicholas Taleb is a former trader and hedge fund manager, a best-selling author, and a groundbreaking theorist on risk and resilience. Taleb drew wide attention after the 2007 publication of The Black Swan: The Impact of the Highly Improbable, which warned that our institutions and risk models aren #39;t designed to account for rare and catastrophic events. Among other things, the book cautioned that oversized and unaccountable banks using flawed investment models could bring on a financial crisis. He also warned that the government-sanctioned housing finance agencies, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, were sitting on a "barrel of dynamite." One year after The Black Swan was published, a global banking crisis was brought on by the very factors he identified.Nassim Nicholas Taleb (PHOTO CREDIT: Sarah Josephine) Taleb doesn #39;t identify as a libertarian, but he often sounds like one. He has argued that we need to build a society where major actors have "skin in the game" and our public intellectuals can bloviate without subjecting the rest of us to the consequences of their bad ideas. He supported Ron Paul in the 2012 presidential election and has cited the libertarian economist Friedrich Hayek as an influence. Taleb has called New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman "vile and harmful" and coined the phrase the "Stiglitz Syndrome" after Nobel-prize winning economist Joseph Stiglitz, which refers to the phenomenon of public intellectuals being held utterly unaccountable for ...

November election results mean change of status for Libertarian Party

The party can appoint a candidate directly to the ballot for the 95th state House special election.

Betsy Summers wasn't successful in her bid to become the state's auditor general.

But Summers, of Luzerne County, and some other Libertarians did do well enough to change the status of the statewide party through the 2014 elections, according to Department of State spokesman Ron Ruman.

Summers was one of the Libertarian candidates who exceeded a 2 percent threshold in the November 2012 election, which means that Libertarians in Pennsylvania are now considered part of a statewide minor political party, instead of a political body.

The state Green Party is still considered a political body, Ruman said.

The change influences the requirements Libertarians have in the 95th state House special election, which will be necessary because former state Rep. Eugene DePasquale has become the state auditor general.

"They would have the opportunity to get a candidate on the ballot without having to go through the more extensive signature process," Ruman said.

Libertarians can appoint a candidate directly to the ballot for the special election, similar to the process for Republicans and Democrats.

"There's one little thing that we're allowed to do the same as the other guys," Summers said. "That truly is exciting."

Since the state Green Party is still considered a political body, its candidate would need to gather signatures equal to 2 percent of the largest vote-getter in the last election for that office, which would equal at least 337 signatures in the 95th District.

The Vegetarian Libertarian – Video

The Vegetarian Libertarian
At the core of libertarianism is the non-aggression principle, or the non-initiation of force. I believe this to be a fantastic principle, and one that I held in my core belief system long before I had ever heard of libertarianism. The fact that libertarians felt this way make it easy for me to make the transition, and leave behind the choosing of the lesser of two evils that were the Republican and Democratic parties. Because of my long-held belief in non-aggression, I also had adopted other philosophical changes in my life, including the choice to become vegetarian. So, my question to my fellow libertarians, is how far should the non-aggression principle extend? Should it extend to animals, as well as people? Is their intrinsic value any less than ours? I very much look forward to your responses.

Libertarians endorse 'Manhattan Madam'

Could a Libertarian one day replace New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg when the time comes? There's news that the Queens County Libertarian Party has "unanimously" endorsed Kristin M. Davis as its candidate for mayor of the Big Apple when voters go to the polls this November.

Miss Davis was once known as the "Manhattan Madam" and says she "supplied prostitutes for Eliot Spitzer, was convicted for promoting prostitution and served four months on Rikers Island."

Prompted by what she calls "inequities in our criminal justice system," Miss Davis became a Libertarian and ran for New York governor two years ago on a platform of decriminalizing marijuana, marriage equality and legalized casino gambling. She also supported Gary Johnson in the 2012 presidential race.

"The Queens Libertarian Party is the largest Libertarian group in the state and their early endorsement of Davis sets the tone for her to become the official Libertarian Party candidate in the 2013 New York City mayoral race," says the hopeful's campaign outreach materials released Monday.

Miss Davis is expected to announce her candidacy "early in 2013" and plans to oppose, among other things, Mr. Bloomberg's restrictions on sugary soft drinks and the New York Police Department's Stop and Frisk program, which permits police to patrol or make "trespass stops" at private residential buildings enrolled in the program.

The Manhattan Libertarian Party's annual convention, incidentally, is Saturday.

Pasco GOP, Libertarian leaders exchange accusations of intimidation, lies

By Lee Logan, Times Staff Writer Lee LoganTampa Bay Times In Print: Sunday, January 13, 2013

NEW PORT RICHEY A top Libertarian Party official accuses a Pasco GOP power broker of intimidating a young city council candidate. The Republican says the other guy's lying and that he was only enforcing party guidelines.

And you thought we were taking a break from local politics for a while.

The story begins with a phone call.

GOP state committeeman Bill Bunting spoke Tuesday afternoon with Michael Malterer, who's running on an anti-red-light camera platform for New Port Richey City Council. (Each man says the other person initiated the call.)

Here's how Bunting described the call:

Malterer asked if he could speak at one or more Republican clubs. Bunting asked Malterer's party affiliation. Malterer told Bunting he is not a registered Republican. But he said the City Council race is nonpartisan and asked what difference his affiliation makes.

"It makes a difference to us because we have party rules," Bunting recalled saying. "Unfortunately I cannot allow you to speak. Good luck on your campaign."

Malterer, 24, declined to discuss specifics of the call, saying the dispute is not relevant to his campaign. He did say Bunting's "version of events are untrue." He borrowed a phrase from retired major league baseball player Roger Clemens and said Bunting "may be misremembering."

Malterer is the chairman of the Libertarian Party of Pasco. The party's vice chairman is Alex Snitker, who ran under the party's banner for U.S. Senate in 2010.
