Student Grills John Bolton On Drones, Bolton Accuses Libertarians of "Defending the Confederacy"
Former UN Ambassador John Bolton appeared on John Stossel #39;s show at the International Students For Liberty Conference in Washington, DC, to defend President Obama #39;s drone program and targeted assassinations. During the Q A, Skeptical Libertarian editor and Rutgers University student Daniel Bier asked Bolton if he would want due process protection if he were targeted. Bolton retorted that the government was right to kill thousands of Americans during the Civil War without due process, and (after being jeered by the crowd) accused libertarians of "discrediting their movement" by "defending the Confederacy." In a later interview, Bier responded to Bolton #39;s statement: "It #39;s ludicrous to compare the deliberate assassination of a 16-year-old American citizen, who is not engaged in hostilities against the United States, who has never been charged with a crime, and was in a neutral country, with shooting back at Confederate soldiers on a battlefield. ... It #39;s a clever rhetorical twist to equate support for due process with support for slavery, but it #39;s a complete non-sequitur. Mr. Bolton never answered my question, and so it seems he #39;s quite comfortable with the idea of a single man deciding who lives and dies, without any restraint or judicial review. After Sen. Rand Paul asserted this weekend that America might be ready for a libertarian Republican presidency, Foxs The Five debated whether that is actually true.

Is America ready for a libertarian president or really just saying a small government person with less military output? co-host Greg Gutfeld asked his panelists after a monologue on what hed like to see in a future president.

I think they often are considered too controversial because of their positions on legalizing pot, which now has become more mainstream; and legalizing prostitution, that a lot of conservatives cant wrap their arms around, Andrea Tantaros explained. Rand Paul is different. I like him a lot. I think that he speaks the truth. He is very, very tough. He doesnt go back and forth. He is not his father, she said, apparently missing the memo that Rands father, Ron Paul (R-TX), was considered one of the most consistent members of Congress throughout his career.

A lot of people say, Id love to vote Republican but I cant because of the social issues, Tantaros continued, before suggesting that if we had someone more liberal we could get voters and open up the big tent. She added that social conservatisms blunders like Todd Akin give the Democrats an opportunity to make Republicans look bad.

Liberal co-host Bob Beckel surmised that Rand Pauls newfound hero status among the GOP is a sign that the bench for the Republicans, which we kept talking about as being mighty strong, is not nearly as strong.

Conservative Eric Bolling chimed in that his problem with libertarians is the whole thing about smaller military. His compromise was to come out in favor of Chris Christie for 2016, noting that he likes his big personality.

We are doing fine in congressional seats but we #39;re becoming less and less of a national party because we don #39;t win on the West Coast, we don #39;t win in New England. We really struggled all around the Great Lakes. I think people want a party that #39;s a little bit less aggressive on foreign policy, still believes in a strong national defense but less aggressive. Sen. Rand Paul says he #39;ll wait until 2014 to decide whether to run for president, but he believes voters are ready for a Libertarian-minded Republican candidate. "I would absolutely not run unless it were to win," the Kentucky Republican said on "Fox News Sunday." "Points have been made, and we we will continue to make points. But I think the country is really ready for the narrative coming mdash; the Libertarian Republican narrative." Voters want a "different face," he said. In order to expand the party #39;s reach, Paul believes the GOP should embrace candidates who are willing to push a less aggressive foreign policy, comprehensive immigration reform and less punitive measures on first offenders of nonviolent drug possession. "We #39;re doing fine in congressional seats, but we #39;re becoming less and less of a national party," Paul said. Paul has been making it clear for months that he #39;s leaning toward a presidential run, but he added he won #39;t make a final decision before next year. In the interim, he said, he #39;ll continue to make his points in the Senate, including over immigration. Robert Drapers New York Times Magazine story about young libertarian Republican operators sympathetically presents their side of a long-standing ideological divide. Republican elites in Washington and among the partys fund-raising base have always cared far more about taxes and regulation than have the partys voting base. The protagonists of the piece present the split as generational, but Im pretty sure that 30 years ago, Republican operators in Washington were more fired up to reduce government and less enthused about social issues than were the party voters. The youngsters also want to modernize the party's use of the Internet, which wouldn't help, but they seem to blend that into their ideological preferences, thus lending them the futuristic sheen of inevitability.

Draper quotes David Plouffe explaining that economic policy, not social issues, held together Obamas coalition. (Its their economic policies and health care. The group that supported the presidents health care bill the most? Latinos.) None of the Republicans in the story seem to engage with this at all. They obsessively decry the partys opposition to gay marriage, a marginal issue in the campaign, while avoiding any mention of the 47 percent comments, the partys opposition to regulating Wall Street, or the unpopular tax cuts for the rich Romney had to endorse in the primary. This quote actually reveals how misplaced their analysis is:

Did Jacobson really expect the Rick Santorums of his party to let a new generation of Republican leaders tell them what to accept and how to behave?

Okay, a couple things. First, the plural of Santorum is not Santorums. Its Santora. Come on, people. Didnt anybody take Latin?

Second, a sad little has-been in a sweater vest is not holding the Republican Party in his hands. Whose agenda defined the Mitt Romney campaign? Was it Santorum, with his immediately forgotten message of no gay marriage and manufacturing tax credits? No, it was Paul Ryan, the man who crafted the partys economic platform and had to be placed on the ticket.

One of the young guns confesses:

I hate all regulations, every single one of them including, he cheerfully admitted, minimum-wage and child-labor laws.

Yeah, go ahead and try running on a platform of that, plus support for gay marriage, in 2016. Let us know how it works out for you.
