An antidote to extreme libertarian thinking?

The six authors whose essays comprise in the new book Uncivil Liberties: Deconstructing Libertarianism will appear at a free event on Friday, March 1.

The volume, published by Praxis Peace Institute and edited by Georgia Kelly, is a comprehensive look, from six distinct perspectives, at the emergence of libertarian thinking in the U.S. and the dangers that might pose.

The book, Kelly said, was actually written in response to a film called Thrive that was making the rounds, primarily in New Age circles, in late 2011. Four member of the Praxis Book Club decided to write a pamphlet that would refute many of the extreme libertarian ideas that were promoted in this film. When we started looking for a book that would treat these ideas seriously from a progressive perspective, we couldnt find one.

In a Huffington Post commentary about the film, Kelly said it was nothing short of a dark fantasy intent on returning us to the 19th century.

For the book, Kelly, who also contributed an essay, assembled a team of five other writers and thinkers: Julianne Maurseth, a Green MBA professor at Dominican University; Barry Spector, an expert on mythology and author of Madness at the Gates of the City: The Myth of American Innocence; local activist Ben Boyce; anthropoligist Nick Colby, Ph; and political scientist and former libertarian Gus diZerega, PhD.

Taking on the tenets of libertarian and right wing thought, the authors challenge what they call the American myths: rugged individualism, endless economic growth, and American exceptionalism.

In their place, Kelly said, the authors offer practical alternatives to business as usual. Alternatives that have a proven track record and are not just what-ifs.

The book release will be celebrated with a free author event at the Sonoma Community Center on Friday, March 1, 7:30 p.m.

Libertarian Party looking for foothold in New Orleans, Jefferson

What we are aiming to do is fight the corruption of the two-party system, Wendy Adams said Thursday.

The Libertarian Party, a minority political party that advocates shrinking the size of government, will form its first executive committees in Orleans and Jefferson parishes in the coming weeks.

Wendy Adams, who the party hired in September as its executive director, said membership in Louisiana grew by more than 50 percent in the last year, a trend sparked by what she described as growing disenchantment with both Republicans and Democrats across the country.

"What we are aiming to do is fight the corruption of the two-party system," she said Thursday.

The Orleans Parish caucus will be held March 28 at 7 p.m. in the banquet room of the Lakeview Harbor Restaurant on Harrison Avenue. The Jefferson Parish caucus is scheduled for April 4 at the Italian Pie Restaurant on Jefferson Highway in Harahan. St. Tammany Parish Libertarians will gather tonight at Vianne's Tea House on Girod Street in Old Mandeville.

Out of those meetings will come newly elected executive committee members - seven each in Jefferson and Orleans, Adams said. Only registered party members can participate.

The Libertarian Party, founded in 1971, gained considerable traction after U.S. Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, ran for president, Adams said. Piggybacking on his popularity among conservatives, the party has grown to roughly 7,450 members throughout Louisiana, she added.

Shreveport, Lafayette and Baton Rouge already have Libertarian executive committees, and the party is working to form new ones in St. Mary, Terrebonne and LaFourche parishes, Adams said.

The goals for 2013 are to reach 15,000 members statewide and establish organizations on college and university campuses, she said.

"What we've worked on is growing the party, and the way we're going to go about doing that is establishing local roots," Adams said.

Libertarian and Tea Party activists oppose Rancho Cucamonga public surveillance cameras

RANCHO CUCAMONGA--Members of Libertarian and Tea Party Groups in the region are protesting against city police plans to install public surveillance cameras around Victoria Gardens.

The plan by the Rancho Cucamonga Police Department is an effort to help deter crime and to focus law enforcement eyes on areas where criminal behavior may be occurring after a 911 call is made. The cameras are expected to be installed sometime within the year, said Rancho Cucamonga Police Chief Mike Newcombe.

"It's 'big brother' and the fact that they're taking federal grant money when our federal government is broke, and we're contributing to the problem by taking federal funds to implement this camera program," said Jeane Ensley, an organizer for the Inland Valley Patriots, a local chapter of the tea party. "Our federal government is broke and we're contributing to the problem by taking fed funds to implement this camera program. It's an invasion of privacy."

Rancho Cucamonga resident, and past city council candidate Anthony rice, is also among those opposed to public surveillance cameras.

"My main concern is the trampling of our constitutional fourth amendment right to be secure in our person and our property," he said. "I'm against any type of government surveillance."

Rice, and others who spoke out against the public cameras voiced concern over federal government control over local government issues, with "strings attached" to federal funds used for such programs.

"If

Jillian Ensley, a Rancho Cucamonga resident, and vice chair of the San Bernardino County Libertarians, also took issue with the use of federal funds for the cameras.

"Anytime a public agency is taking a federal grant, there are strings attached," Ensley said. "There is an expectation that we need to do something for the federal government and the federal government has no business in our lives."

The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department, which serves Rancho Cucamonga as its police service, will install about 20 cameras for the first phase. Plans are to expand the number to other areas as funds become available. The cameras will be placed in public areas near intersections around the major shopping center.

It’s Hard to Gross Out a Libertarian: Jonathan Haidt on Sex, Politics, and Disgust – Video

It #39;s Hard to Gross Out a Libertarian: Jonathan Haidt on Sex, Politics, and Disgust
"Morality isn #39;t just about stealing and killing and honesty, it #39;s often about menstruation, and food, and who you are having sex with, and how you handle corpses," says NYU social psychologist Jonathan Haidt, who is author of THE RIGHTEOUS MIND: WHY GOOD PEOPLE ARE DIVIDED BY POLITICS. Haidt argues that our concern over these victimless behaviors is rooted in our biology. Humans evolved to feel disgusted by anything that when consumed makes us sick. That sense of disgust then expanded "to become a guardian of the social order." This impulse is at the core of the culture war. Those who have a low sensitivity to disgust tend to be liberals or libertarians; those who are easily disgusted tend to be conservative. Haidt discussed his views on morality and politics at an event hosted by the Reason Foundation, which was held on February 19, 2013 at the Museum of Sex. Haidt #39;s lecture was followed by a Q A with New York Times Science Columnist John Tierney. Approximately 35 minutes. Camera by Jim Epstein and Naomi Brockwell. Edited by Epstein. An Open Letter To Glenn Beck From The Libertarian Org Founder He Called A ‘Jerk’ And ‘Nazi’

As we reported here, last Friday on his radio show, Glenn Beck went after the Nazi, fascistic, jerk libertarians who refuse to accept his newfound libertarianism. As it turns out, he was largely referring to the president of Students for Liberty (SFL), Alexander McCobin.

During his opening remarks at the 2013 International SFL Conference the same event at which Ann Coulter called libertarians pussies McCobin called on Beck to renounce his previously staunch conservative and neoconservative positions and engage the libertarian community in an open and honest way. Beck did not take well to such criticism, referring to McCobin as a grand inquisitor, among other names. Andrew Kirell, Sr. Editor, Mediaite.

Below is an open response letter from McCobin, printed exclusively at Mediaite.

Dear Mr. Beck,

There is no reason you should have heard of me before. Im just a guy who became enamored with the principles of liberty in 9th grade and grew to appreciate the philosophical rigor and enormous individual and societal benefits that flow from them. Im now a graduate student in philosophy, and co-founder and president of a nonprofit organization called Students For Liberty (SFL) that began 5 years ago to support libertarian students and student organizations.

Today, SFL has over 900 student organizations in our network, is run by over 250 volunteer student leaders who are working to change the world, runs dozens of conferences for thousands of students around the world, provides a plethora of resources to young libertarians everywhere, such as 175,000 free copies of our 3rd publication, After the Welfare State. SFL is dedicated to expanding the younger generations understanding and appreciation of the philosophy of freedom and the benefits that may be derived from it.

This is admittedly an ambitious and long-term goal, but one that I am optimistic about and pursue because of the inherent value of liberty. I am writing this letter today because of the comments you made about me on your show this past Friday, February 22, 2013. Regrettably, you called me a Nazi, a fascist, a jerk, a guy who thinks hes God. I submit I am none of those things, or at least I dont try to be. I have no intention of getting caught up in name-calling or responding to the many strawmen you constructed and then ridiculed. There is no profit in that. Its water under the bridge. So, I admit that my rhetoric may have been exaggerated during my opening speech at the 6th International Students For Liberty Conference on February 15, 2013 where 1,400+ young libertarians gathered to learn about the ideas of liberty and strategize how to advance freedom. But those comments resonated with the attendees, as your staffer told you, and the substantive point I was trying to make was apropos: for more than a decade, you worked very hard and very successfully at branding yourself as a key figure in conservatism, not just economic conservatism, but also social and neoconservatism. Not only are these not libertarian positions, but to associate libertarianism with them makes it that much harder to introduce libertarianism to more people, especially young people who are turned off by conservatism. After you spent over 10 years denouncing libertarianism, actively working against our causes, and building up a certain reputation for yourself directly opposed to our ideas, I think its reasonable for me and other libertarians to be skeptical when you suddenly claim to be a libertarian. I really hope you have changed your views and that you are committed to libertarianism (your segment on Friday included more renunciations of your past conservative positions than I have ever heard from you, which I admire). However, its going to take more than new window dressing for me and many others to believe that youre a libertarian. Show us that youre libertarian through the positions you take beyond conservatism, the groups you support, the people you invite to your show, indeed, even just in the conversations you are willing to have.

I truly hope there is an opportunity to open a constructive dialogue that could be to our, and to the cause of libertys, benefit. In fact, I emailed your team last week, on Wednesday, February 20th, before your February 22nd segment, and offered to have an open conversation about the meaning of libertarianism. I received a response later that evening that immediately shot me down. In short, the message I received was that you and your team had your own conception of libertarianism and had nothing more to learn about the philosophy, at least not from people like me. I am going to hope that this was an error on the part of one of your staffers rather than a true reflection of your beliefs, so will make the same offer to you here: I would like to have an open, honest conversation about the meaning of libertarianism with you if you are up for it. It can be a private conversation between the two of us if you dont want prying ears, or it can be public for others to benefit as well. Are you willing to have that conversation?

Libertarians trying to grow

A group of 23-year-olds is spearheading an effort in Bucks County to expand the Libertarian party.

The organization disappeared locally in recent years, said Nicholas C. Hillman of Warminster, chairman of the Bucks County Libertarian Party, established in December. Were reviving it.

Hillman, Brad Cooper of Newtown Township and Josh Roth of Richboro have held meetings in Doylestown and Richboro hoping to ignite a passion for their third-party endeavor.

Democrats and Republicans have controlled everything, Hillman said. They brought the country down to where it is today.

Libertarians are traditionally known to be fiscally conservative and socially liberal. Members believe that gives them an opportunity to pick off disillusioned Democrats and Republicans.

The two main parties are basically the same, Hillman said. Both are for big government, ever-expanding. You never see a bill to cut spending. We want to be the opposite.

And Democrats speak about peoples personal rights, then pass bills to just restrict them more, Roth said.

Hillman believes the key to power is getting Libertarians elected to smaller positions where they can get a seat at the table. For example, he is running for Judge of Elections in Warminsters District 4.

Start from the bottom up, Hillman said. Thats a seat we can obtain. It doesnt take a lot of effort to do.

Cooper, a student at Middle Bucks Institute of Technology, contends the Libertarian message resonates with young people.

And relishes the death of hundreds of thousands of American civilians without trial on TV. "If centralism is ultimately to prevail; if our entire system of free Institutions as established by our common ancestors is to be subverted, and an Empire is to be established in their stead; if that is to be the last scene of the great tragic drama now being enacted: then, be assured, that we of the South will be acquitted, not only in our own consciences, but in the judgment of mankind, of all responsibility for so terrible a catastrophe, and from all guilt of so great a crime against humanity." - Alexander Stephens, Vice President of the Confederate States of America

Ann Coulter Battles Stossel, Calls Libertarians ‘Pussies,’ And Gets Booed By Room Full Of Students

What do you get when you invite outspoken conservative firebrand Ann Coulter to debate outspoken libertarian John Stossel in front of an audience of 1,000+ libertarian students?

Fireworks, thats what.

On tonights episode of Fox Business Networks Stossel, Coulter got into a heated debate with Stossel and the students over a variety of social issues, in the process calling libertarians pussies and receiving lots of jeering for her remarks.

Once a year, Stossel (full disclosure: my former boss) tapes a show at the International Students for Liberty Conference in Washington, D.C. He typically brings on friendly libertarian guests, like presidential candidate Gary Johnson, Reason magazine star Nick Gillespie, Cato Institute VP David Boaz, or up-and-coming Rep. Justin Amash (R-MI).

But just to show that the 1,400+ students are not beholden to either major political party, a liberal and a conservative will also join the show and mix things up. This year, Coulter was that conservative. And boy, did things get heated.

The initial conversation between Stossel and Coulter began as a light squabble over whether the War in Iraq was truly justified. The war was certainly worth the cost because Saddam Hussein was definitely looking for uranium from Niger, she said. Her remarks were met with tepid boos and confusion, but the room was mostly pleasant at that point.

But when the subject turned the the legalizing drugs, things quickly became tense. Libertarians and pot, Coulter said with a dismissive laugh.

This is why people think libertarians are pussies, she said. Yes, it was bleeped. But I was there in person, so I know she said it. Her explanation:

Were living in a country that is 70-percent socialist, the government takes 60 percent of your money. They are taking care of your health care, of your pensions. Theyre telling you who you can hire, what the regulations will be. And you want to suck up to your little liberal friends and say, Oh, but we want to legalize pot. You know, if youre a little more manly you would tell them what your position on employment discrimination is. How about that? But its always We want to legalize pot.

Stossel then asked: Why cant gays get married?

Bolton Confronts Stossel on Obama Drones, Accuses Libertarians of Defending The Confederacy
2/21/13 - John Stossel #39;s annual show from the International Students for Liberty Conference features not only the usual friendly libertarians, but a handful of liberals and conservatives who willfully engage a potentially hostile crowd of 1000+ libertarian students. As our readers are likely aware by now, Ann Coulter happened to be one of the two conservatives brought on to debate the students. And it was, shall we say, tense. The other conservative featured in the program was John Bolton, former Bush official and he of the "neocon" variety. Last year, Bolton #39;s appearance on Stossel resulted in a bit of controversy. But despite the not-so-warm reception last year, Bolton returned again to discuss why he believes a neoconservative foreign policy is best; and continue his defense of President Obama #39;s "sensible" targeted assassination program. "It doesn #39;t seem morally right to just take the word of some government officials that this guy #39;s a terrorist and send a machine to kill him, and kill civilians along with him," Stossel said to Bolton. "The commander-in-chief authority vested by the Constitution in the president gives him the direction over the war capabilities of the United States," Bolton replied. "And his efforts, both in the Bush and the Obama administration, to go after the terrorists, I think is entirely justified." "So America can kill anybody anywhere?" Stossel asked. "Of course not," Bolton shot back, "listen to what I just said." He re-asserted that the ...
