Cell Project for Biology II — Katie, Levi, Tera, Mark, and Adam, 1997-1998 – Video

Cell Project for Biology II -- Katie, Levi, Tera, Mark, and Adam, 1997-1998
One of the best classes I had in high school was Biology II with Ed Erwin. It was a great class partially because we learned a lot, partially because we had a lot of freedom, and probably mostly because all of us who took it that year were friends. Here is one of our projects, creating a model of a cell using food products; explaining diffusion of molecules; and singing songs about the various phases of cell division -- with original lyrics and harmony! One of the things I love about this, besides our ridiculous clothes and hair, is that we wouldn #39;t play any of the curse words on Sublime #39;s "What I Got." So if it seems like the tape screws up right around where the F-word should be, and where the song says, "I don #39;t get angry when my Mom smokes pot," it #39;s not a tape malfunction. We edited to preserve your virgin ears, all those years ago. We had so much fun. Hard to believe this was 15 years ago!From:waltwhippyViews:1 0ratingsTime:15:31More inEntertainment

The Fall (Micro-teaser from Exile Game Jam 2012) – Video

The Fall (Micro-teaser from Exile Game Jam 2012)
"The Fall is a short point-and-click adventure for PC that plays with the arrow of time. There #39;s a quotation from famous Danish philosopher Soren Kierkegaard. In reverse it goes something like this: "Life must be lived forwards, but it can only be understood backwards." The choice to make a game where the entire flow of time is reversed was easy enough to make. The actual game, as it turned out, would prove a little more difficult. From gameplay mechanics to mini-games, dialogue to story structure, music to sound effects--we never really stop to think about how much the Arrow of Time influences all of these, until we flip that Arrow and are left to clean up the chronological mess. If we succeed in our mission, The Fall will be more than just a structural experiment. It will be a meditation on freedom of choice and the inescapability of our choices. The Fall tells us that, even though we are all traveling along the same path towards the same, shared destination, we #39;re still free to decide which route to take." Made in a little less than 48 hours during Exile Game Jam 2012 at Vallekilde Hjskole by Thomas Ryder, Bram Michielsen Julian Stengaard. Making of IRON MAN w/ makedo

Making of IRON MAN w/ makedo cardboard - #37628; #37941; #20154; #20197; #32654; #24230; #25187; #32025; #29256; #35069; #20316;
The idea of making an ironman simply came from my 3 kids... I wanted to make them a toy suit for roleplay and halloween, but ended up making my own size model. In any case, they had fun during the month long period I spent making this model. If it were not for the daily #39;Daddy, where is the ironman? #39;, I would not have been able to finish it! The goal of this project is to use 100% makedo, nothing else, to make an Ironman robot (not suit) out of 100% cardboard paper (with exception of the electronic part). To totally make use of the benefit and concept of makedo, I have decided NOT to design on paper at all. I started by collecting ironman images of every angle possible online and sketch the pattern shape on cardboard based on what I see from the images. The best part of usining the combination of cardboard and makedo is that I get to connect parts together and still be able to take them apart for modification (trimming, re-shape...etc), and connect back again. There #39;s a extremely high degree of freedom in the making/designing/re-designing process. I also found that this works best when I need to #39;copy #39; and #39;paste #39; any part, like an arm or a leg... I can simply take the arm apart and copy the pattern, then connect them back again. The model is going to be displayed at the Puppetry Art Center in Taipei this December, 2012, along with many other robots made with makedo and recycled materials. Moscow supports Palestine – Video

Moscow supports Palestine
Dozens of people around the world - from Mexico to India - gather in the squares of their cities with posters to protest against the war in Gaza. On Monday, Israeli military boarded the ships of the international flotilla, killing ten people. The flotilla was carrying dozens of human rights activists to Gaza, as well as tons of relief supplies. A meeting in support of Gaza took place in Moscow too, in front of the Israeli Embassy in Bolshaya Ordynka Street. The participants were chanting slogans calling upon Israel to stop the military action. Interestingly, the people have split in their opinions. There are those who support Israel. For example, Turkey summoned Israeli ambassador for official explanations, and in Georgia #39;s Tbilisi two actions took place in one day. In one of them, there were people of culture and art participating in support of Israel. Others gathered in front of the Israeli embassy with slogans "Free Palestine" and "Freedom to Hamas."From:PravdaTVViews:0 0ratingsTime:00:52More inNews Politics

New Video: Nicki Minaj, 'Freedom' (NSFW)

Nicki Minaj is a glamazon in her "Freedom" video.

By now, you probably know thatNicki Minaj'sPink Friday: Roman Reloaded -- The Re-Up(which dropped yesterday!)includes a whopping seven brand-new songs, and while it may be to early to call it, we kinda think Nicki's poignant mid-tempo jam "Freedom" is our new favorite. And did we mention the single's official video drops today? Because if you thought Nicki looked UNREAL performing "Freedom" at the 2012 American Music Awards, then you're really gonna flip for the ensembles she's rocking here.

Watch Nicki Minaj's "Freedom" video after the jump.

Directed by Colin Tilley, "Freedom" doesn't have much of a plot line, but that's not such a big deal -- we're instead encouraged to gawk at insanely glam shots of Nicki in haute couture and sporting stunning hair made even more stunning by an extremely effective wind machine. Nicki strikes a series of poses against different backdrops (we're partial to the boat wreckage, ourselves), and although it's just beautiful scenery, you can tell by Nicki's smize that she's definitely in the process of unleashing herself from the shacklesthat bind! What those specific shackles are, we can't be sure, but we ARE happy to give a hearty "Mazels!" to Nicki anyway. It can't be easy getting emancipated while you're all bound up in couture! Just guessing.

Freedom of speech forgotten on college campuses

My Facebook has been riddled with daily updates of what my friends and family are thankful for in preparation for Thanksgiving. Sometimes its sweet, other times its as if theyre struggling to come up with something to be publicly grateful for. Regardless, its just another example of the freedom of speech that we, as a nation, adhere to.

Working for a student newspaper has opened my eyes to what freedom of speech really means. At times, Ive questioned what philosophical explanation I agree with, but ultimately, I am a freedom of speech purist.

The Wall Street Journal recently interviewed Greg Lukianoff, president of the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education. He spoke against the censorship and speech oppression prevalent on college campuses.

It made me thankful to be part of an organization that at its core is against censorship of speech. As an independent entity with the final editorial decisions made by a student, The Exponent exhibits freedom of speech every day.

There are many who want the freedom of speech that doesnt offend certain sects. I, however, believe that freedom of speech applies to all forms, offensive or not.

Lukianoff says in the interview, In every genuinely diverse community Ive ever lived in, freedom of speech had to be the rule ... I find it deeply ironic that on college campuses diversity is used as an argument against unbridled freedom of speech.

I am thankful for those such as Lukianoff who fight to stop encroachments on the freedom of speech and for institutions such as The Exponent that allow for student voices to be heard.

Nicki Minaj's 'Freedom' Music Video: Look By Look

A still from Nicki Minaj's "Freedom" music video. Photo: Vevo/ Cash Money Records Inc.

Not even exaggerating, we've watched Nicki Minaj's new "Freedom" video a good TEN times since it premiered last night. And no, it wasn't even because of this post it's because the pop superstar looks so freaking pretty throughout the entire thing, we had no choice but to keep pressing 'repeat'! We already know Nicki's got her beauty and fashion game on lock these days, but for her new vid the singer ditches the bustiers, tutus, and Zenon-inspired ensembles for a toned-down (for her, at least) wardrobe of glittery gowns, decadent furs, and more than one crown. After all, if there's ANYONE fit to be queen bee, it's this lady.

A still from Nicki Minaj's "Freedom" music video. Photo: Vevo/ Cash Money Records Inc.

For the first half of the 5-minute clip we're seeing things in black and white: a lone staircase, a sole cross, and some scary-looking clouds. Along with all this religious symbolism there's brunette Nicki, standing on deserted railroad tracks dressed in a black floor-length dress. At first it's tough to truly appreciate the leather insets and intricate gorgeousness of her crown, but once the vid shifts to color mode around the 2-minute mark, we can get a glimpse of her outfit. It's simple, chic, and juuuuust might the most minimal gown we've ever seen Nicki wear. As for the headpiece, it comes courtesy of London label Sorapol, and is the first of MANY times she reps the cult line in the vid.

A still from Nicki Minaj's "Freedom" music video. Photo: Vevo/ Cash Money Records Inc.

Next up, Nicki changes into a glittery long-sleeved Sorapol gown to REALLY cement her status as rap royalty. From the brand's Spring/Summer12 collection, the dress is replete with a sequined top, poofy full-skirt, and massive gold embellishment. And because no queen ensemble would be complete without a golden crown, she's laid a lavish headdress atop her straight blonde locks. YES, YES, AND YES.

A still from Nicki Minaj's "Freedom" music video. Photo: Vevo/ Cash Money Records Inc.

We're mildly obsessed with the strapless Sorapol number Nicki's wearing in this scene maybe it's the gold chains or the graphic print OR the jaunty side detailing, but this outfit makes her look like a really, really glamorous mermaid (go with us here...).

A still from Nicki Minaj's "Freedom" music video. Photo: Vevo/ Cash Money Records Inc.

Now Nicki's wearing pants for the first time in the video, pairing her black leather skinnies with Sorapol's furry jacket. Perched on a massive chair with wild black hair, the message is coming across loud and clear....bow down.

Half of Press Freedom Honorees in Jail Amid Record Imprisonment

Dhondup Wangchen and Azimjon Askarov couldnt accept their awards last night at the International Press Freedom Awards because both are imprisoned for their work.

Wangchen, a Tibetan filmmaker, was given a six-year sentence in China in 2010 for his documentary Leaving Fear Behind, which chronicled Tibet under Chinese rule. Askarov has been imprisoned since 2010 in Kyrgyzstan, where he serves a life sentence on various charges after documenting ethnic clashes.

Mae Azango, a Liberian journalist whose life was threatened for her articles about female genital mutilation, and Mauri Konig from Brazil, who was beaten and left for dead during his investigation into human trafficking, were present to accept their awards from the Committee to Protect Journalists at the Waldorf-Astoria hotel in New York. CPJ promotes press freedom and supports imperiled journalists worldwide.

The CPJ, Amnesty International and other organizations helped pressure Liberia to suspend female circumcision, which has been used on as many as two out of three Liberian girls, Azango said in an interview before the awards ceremony.

When protests came from the Committee to Protect Journalists and Amnesty International and others, the government was pushed to speak up, Azango said. But its still going on, its a long tradition, so Ill continue to talk and write about it.

Female journalists are proving male journalists wrong that they only go after soft news, Azango, who calls herself the voice of the voiceless, said in her acceptance speech.

CPJ, based in New York, has documented 55 journalists killed in 2012, according to its website. Today there are at least 179 journalists imprisoned, a record in the CPJs history, Gwen Ifill, a broadcaster for PBS, said last night. Press outlets filled the tables at the awards ceremony and fundraising dinner, the most successful on record with more than $1.6 million, according to the CPJ.

Fewer than 10 percent of journalists murderers are brought to justice, said David Boies, a lawyer and chairman of the dinner. Some of the worst offending countries are functioning democracies, he said.

Ive spent the past 12 years walking the Brazilian border with Paraguay and Argentina to report on trafficking of children, Konig said in an interview before the awards ceremony. They continue to be the victims.

The Fraser Institute: Bahrain, UAE Tied for Most Economic Freedom in Arab World

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Nov 21, 2012) - Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are home to the highest levels of economic freedom among Arab nations, according to the annual Economic Freedom of the Arab World report published by the Fraser Institute, Canada''s leading public policy think-tank, in partnership with the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Liberty (FNF) and the International Research Foundation (IRF) of Oman.

Bahrain, which ranked first last year, improved its overall score to 8.1 out of 10 from 8.0. The UAE also scored 8.1, tying with Bahrain after ranking second overall in 2011 with a score of 7.9. Jordan moved into the third spot from eighth overall, improving its score to 7.9 from 7.4 last year. The complete rankings are listed below.

The report was released in conjunction with the annual Economic Freedom of the Arab World meeting in Tunis. The meeting attracted delegates from nations throughout the Middle East and North Africa.

"Economic freedom is the key to increasing prosperity, creating jobs, and reducing poverty," said Fred McMahon, Dr. Michael A. Walker Research Chair in Economic Freedom and co-author of the Economic Freedom of the Arab World: 2012 Annual Report.

"In this way, economic freedom liberates people from government dependence and opens the door to democracy and other freedoms. The Arab Spring showed us that the region craves economic freedom."

The Economic Freedom of the Arab World report compares and ranks Arab nations in five areas of economic freedom: size of government, including expenditures, taxes, and enterprises; commercial and economic law and security of property rights; access to sound money; freedom to trade internationally; and regulation of credit, labour, and business. The complete report may be downloaded as a PDF, free of charge, at http://www.freetheworld.com.

Economic freedom is based on the cornerstones of personal choice, voluntary exchange, freedom to compete, and security of private property. Research shows that individuals living in countries with high levels of economic freedom enjoy higher levels ofprosperity, greater individual freedoms, and longer life spans.

"Increases in economic freedom that are, in effect, a return to the classical Arab model of free trade and open markets would help generate the economic dynamism needed to create the jobs and prosperity that the region requires for a successful future," said Salem Ben Nasser Al Ismaily, the report''s lead author, chairman of IRF, and a member of the Fraser Institute''s board of directors.

The report is based on data from 2010 (the most recent year available) but also examines more recent data to mark out trends for individual nations. This is crucial since the key question in future years will be whether the changes underway result in greater economic freedom or whether economies in the region continue to stagnate.

Algeria, Mauritania, and Syria were again found to have the least economic freedom among Arab nations. These bottom-ranked countries score, on average, two points behind the nations with the highest levels of economic freedom, with Algeria at 5.7, up from 5.5 last year; Mauritania unchanged at 6.0; and Syria at 6.2, up from 5.9.
