Girls hoops playoffs roundup: Freedom makes first final four

By Tribune staff Published: February 17, 2013 Updated: February 17, 2013 - 12:12 AM

Freedom center Faith Woodard said her heart stopped in the final minute of Saturday's Class 7A-Region 2 final against Sebastian River.

"Those were, by far, the most nerve-racking, unforgettable moments of my life," Woodard said. "It came down to the wire and my heart stopped."

Fortunately for Woodard and her Patriots' teammates, her playing never stopped, as the Georgetown-bound senior laid in a finger roll with 13 seconds left, then ran down court for her 10th rebound and drew a foul, leading Freedom (25-2) to a 74-73 win and the program's first final four appearance.

Woodard scored 25 points in her double-double, including eight in the final quarter, but a lot of the nerves the senior mentioned came because of the monster night of Sebastian River's KP Pound, who led all scorers with 33 points.

The Patriots got out to a comfortable lead of 12 points early in the third quarter before the defending state champion Sharks (23-3) started chipping away. Sebastian River caught up and took the lead with a little more than three minutes left in the game and things see-sawed from there.

"We are going to fight harder than anybody," Freedom coach Laurie Pacholke said. "Even when (Sebastian River) made a run a lot of teams would have buckled at that, but I knew we weren't going to give up."

Freedom's Taylor Emory scored 21, while Whitney Ivey added 13 points, but the team's saving grace may have come from the hustle of senior Monet Williams, whose defense and clutch six fourth-quarter points kept the Patriots in the game.

Everyday African-Americans on the Extraordinary Road to Freedom

Former slave H. J. Williams described his life afteremancipation: Chopping cotton. Plowing the mule. You know, sharecroppingIt wasnt complete slavery, but it wasnt much different at that time.

The iconic images and sounds associated with Americas Civil Rights movement are well known. But what happened before the heroes and protests; court orders and sit-ins? Weve come a long way, but how did we get here? As we observe Black History Month this February, we have an opportunity to reflect on how and why the quest for freedom was a movement made up not just of charismatic leaders, but also of everyday people who made extraordinary decisions to fight for change.

Stories From the Road to Freedom, which includes many first-person testimonies by people like Williams, is a new two-hour documentary premiering on HISTORY on Saturday, February 16,at 10 p.m. EST. Narrated byDeon Cole, the film gives a fresh perspective on the roughly 100 years between the end of the Civil War and the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Voting Rights Act of 1965.

The special uses firsthand accounts, rare audio recordings, never-before-seen archival footage, and home movies to chronicle African-American life as lived by regular people, in their own words. These were the everyday people who carved out a life despite segregation, and then lit the spark that would become a massive mobilization for Civil Rights. This film preserves these stories and images for a new generation of young people who may just now be learning about the iconic leaders of the Civil Rights era.

Despite their efforts to maintain vibrant lives filled with dignity and freedom, African-Americans continued to be faced with discrimination and violence in American society. And they continued to press the issue of integration so that the United States would one day become the fully multi-racial society it is today.

The 13ththrough 15thAmendments paved the way for equality in official terms. But during the decades after the Civil War, many of these advances were peeled back by new segregation laws. Rather than recede into despair under the realities of Jim Crow,African-Americans developed new communities based on values of education, excellence and faith. After the 1896 Supreme Court decision Plessy v. Ferguson spelled out the separate but equal doctrine, African-Americans created their own schools, towns, gathering places, and traditions.

For example, Langston City, Oklahoma, was just one of thousands of all-black towns that werefounded after the Civil War. As one citizen, E. P. McCabe, said, We have a good society, church privileges, school privileges and last but not least, the enjoyment of every right every other man enjoys under the Constitution.

While the full promises of American freedom and equality were stalled, African-Americans forged thriving communities. Juneteeth celebrations, which marked the end of slavery inTexas, became commonplace for African-Americans, though no official Emancipation Day has made it onto the American calendar.

In many ways, life after emancipation for former slaves was too similar to life before emancipation. (Photo: NBC Universal Archives)

Despite their efforts to maintain vibrant lives filled with dignity and freedom, African-Americans continued to be faced with discrimination and violence in American society. And they continued to press the issue of integration so that the United States would one day become the fully multiracial society it is today.

Freedom of expression gagged

The Vishwaroopam episode is a case of hecklers veto, or use of law to muzzle free expression.

The use of law to bully people into silence, called hecklers veto, is not unique to India.

Freedom of expression in India is under threat. This year we have the Tamil Nadu governments ban on Vishwaroopam, the Ashis Nandy FIR, the smothering of Kashmirs first all girls rock bands music, and the removal of semi-nude paintings of Hindu deities from an art gallery upon the polices suggestion. Another Rushdie-banning controversy is upon us, and yet another Facebook users arrest has made the news.

Clearly, our right to freedom of expression is under an ongoing siege. The onslaught comes in varied forms: bullying by members of society, informal government action with the overhanging threat of the law, and direct use of the law (and of a variety of legislations within it). Each form is encouraged, exacerbated even, by our problematic interpretation of freedom of expression principles. Our law allows a group of intolerant people to silence a speaker by creating a threat to public order or by threatening the speaker directly, and our state is proving utterly ineffectual in protecting speech from intolerance.

Indias first Kashmiri all-girls band is tragic proof of horizontal attacks on speech their music was silenced by the grandmuftis declaring it un-Islamic, and the attendant social pressure that tends to follow. They were not protected from this horizontal attack. The Palghar incident also had echoes of horizontal pressure, which was used to directly bully Shaheen Dhada, via friends advising her to apologise and strangers slapping her, before the instrument of the law was used to bully her further.

The instrument of the law can be used in invisible, informal ways, as Bangalores Chitrakala Parishath incident illustrates. Here, the pressure of police suggestion, carrying the implied threat of the force of the law, was used to ensure that semi-nude paintings of Hindu deities were removed from an exhibition. It appears that this police suggestion was motivated by the fear that those paintings could trigger law and order problems.

Vishwaroopam was banned using the law, specifically section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, which empowers the government to issue orders in urgent cases of nuisance or apprehended danger. However, orders issued under section 144 would still need to observe the boundaries drawn for it in Article 19(2) of the Constitution.

Some may argue that controversial or offensive speech can legitimately be restricted since public order is one of the grounds for which our Constitution permits the restriction of the freedom of expression. However the original text of the Constitution did not include public order among its permissible grounds for restriction. This was inserted in the First Amendment of the Constitution, but was fortunately accompanied by the word reasonable before restriction, thus ensuring that the freedom of expression can only be reasonably restricted under the exceptional circumstances listed in the Constitution.

This insertion of public order came after the Supreme Courts invalidation of government pre-censorship of speech on public order grounds in Romesh Thapar v. State of Madras (1950), declaring that the Constitution required that nothing less than endangering the foundations of the State or threatening its overthrow could justify curtailment of the rights to freedom of speech and expression. Therefore, Parliament amended the Constitution to expand the grounds on which the state could restrict speech, and included public order among the expanded grounds. The trouble with this is that the intolerant are now able to create a public order problem to silence speakers.

The Supreme Court of India, in Babulal Parate vs State Of Maharashtra (1961) found that public order must be maintained in advance in order to ensure it, and ruled that restriction of Article 19 freedoms of expression and assembly in the interests of public order is permissible. However, all such restrictions must continue to satisfy the reasonability test laid down in the Constitution, providing our judiciary with the opportunity to ensure that intolerance does not continue to oppress speech.

Freedom to send sofa-making offshore

Furniture retailer Freedom is shutting down its factory in western Sydney as sofa production is shifted overseas.

The company announced on Friday that it had decided to move its upholstery supply to offshore vendors and stop manufacturing products at its Kings Park facility from April.

"This decision is not a reflection on the production, processes, quality or staff at the Sydney operation - it is due to a change in the upholstery supply strategy which Freedom has chosen to take," Freedom said in a statement on Friday.

"This change will achieve production cost benefits which will then be passed on to customers."

The Construction Forestry Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU) said the decision would directly affect around 30 workers at the factory, who were notified by a letter from the company's managing director.

The CFMEU claims that, as a result, Freedom will no longer stock locally-produced items in their stores across Australia.

"It is outrageous that Freedom, a retailer that has a long history of trading on the quality workmanship of their expert team of Australian upholsterers, has told those very same staff that in just two months their jobs will be sent overseas," the union's Craig Smith said in a statement.

"This announcement is a stark reminder of the urgent need for action to support the manufacturing sector, which has become one of the innocent victims of the mining boom."

Mr Smith urged Freedom and its parent company, global firm Steinhoff, to reconsider its decision and recognise that Australian consumers have a strong preference for quality, locally-made products.

Freedom said customers should expect the same quality across its range.

Pastor Rick Warren (R), interviewed by Timothy Shaw, Associate Director of the Religious Freedom Project at the Berkley Center For Religion, Peace, and World Affairs, at Georgetown University, Washington, D.C., Feb. 12, 2013.

February 13, 2013|9:18 am

Religious freedom is not just the freedom to worship, Warren explained, it is also the freedom to practice one's faith. One-third of Jesus' ministry was health care (through healing), Warren noted. Plus, the Church has been involved in health care for 2,000 years and even invented the hospital.

The birth control mandate, though, requires all employers to cover contraception, sterilization and abortifacient drugs in their employees' health insurance plans. There is a religious exemption, but it is so narrow that most religious organizations, including Catholic hospitals, are not exempt. They will be required to pay for services in opposition to the teachings of their faith. Catholic leaders have complained that the Obama administration is requiring them to choose between violating their faith and carrying out the duties of their faith to care for the poor and sick.

Warren's concerns about religious freedom grew partly out of his work in developing countries. In most of the world, Warren said, social services, such as health care and job training programs, are commonly provided by churches. If the Catholic Church were taken out of Africa, 27 percent of the continent's health care would also be removed, he explained to the audience at Georgetown, a Catholic university.

YouTube ban in Egypt is a setback for freedom of expression

A temporary ban on YouTube imposed in Egypt over a video deemed offensive to Islam is a setback for freedom of expression , Amnesty International has said.

A court in Cairo this weekend ordered a 30-day block on the video-sharing website in the wake of the controversial 'Innocence of Muslims' video, which sparked protests across Muslim countries in September.

Saturday's court ruling said that "freedom of opinion [should] not attack the beliefs of others".

"This ruling is a clear assault of freedom of expression and has far-reaching consequences in the country where activists have relied heavily on YouTube to expose human rights abuses in the country," said Hassiba Hadj Sahraoui, Deputy Director for the Middle East and North Africa at Amnesty International.

"Criticism of religions and beliefs are a vital part of freedom of expression regardless of how offensive or intolerant the opinion might be."

Cairo's Administrative Court said there must be a balance between freedom of expression and the interests and goals of society, and the protection of its values and traditions".

It added that freedom of opinion should not "provoke the feelings and resentment of believers of other religions, particularly heavenly religions and that the media should refrain from "defamation" of religious figures.

The court's reasons for banning YouTube are in direct contradiction with international human rights law, which protects freedom of expression, including the expression of ideas that are offensive.

"Criticism of religions and other beliefs and ideas is a vital component of the right to freedom of expression," said Hassiba Hadj Sahraoui.

"Such criticism, insult or mockery does not interfere with the individual believers freedom of religion, however offensive they may find it."

Turkey moves to boost freedom of expression

ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Turkey has drafted changes to the penal code, narrowing the definition of terrorist propaganda in a step to boost freedom of expression in line with EU demands and potentially encourage a fledgling peace process with a jailed Kurdish militant leader.

The bill, presented to Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday and likely to be sent to parliament this month, may lead to the release of defendants accused of links to Kurdish rebels, a justice ministry official told Reuters on Wednesday.

Turkey has used anti-terror legislation widely to prosecute thousands of politicians, activists and journalists, frequently for things they have said or written.

Turkey regularly tops the list of countries violating the European Convention of Human Rights and the European Commission has called on Ankara to amend its laws to distinguish between incitement to violence and expression of non-violent ideas.

"Regulations have been prepared which rescue this country from such trouble ... opening the way for freedom of expression and thought in Turkey," Justice Minister Sadullah Ergin said.

The reform was in line with European Court of Human Rights criteria, under which only a direct incitement to violence constitutes a crime, he told reporters.

"When a person shares an idea and writes it down, if it does not contain, inspire, incite or try to legitimize violence, how can somebody be convicted?" the minister said.

If approved, the legislation is likely to be welcomed by Europe, which frequently criticizes Ankara's human rights record and imprisonment of political activists and journalists.

Under the current anti-terrorism law and criminal code, writing an article or making a speech can lead to long prison sentences for membership of a terrorist group.

Thousands of Kurdish politicians and activists have been prosecuted since 2009 over alleged links to the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) - deemed a terrorist group by the EU and Washington, as well as Turkey.

Freedom Meditech Receives FDA 510(k) Clearance for ClearPath DS-120â„¢

SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

Freedom Meditech, Inc., developer of non-invasive ophthalmic products for the detection of disease and management of patient health, today announced it has received 510(k) clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to market and sell its first product, the ClearPath DS-120 Lens Fluorescence Biomicroscope.

The ClearPath is cleared by FDA as a tool for the measurement of autofluorescence by scanning the crystalline lens of the eye with a blue light. In independent scientific studies published in peer-reviewed journals, elevated autofluorescence measurements have been linked to high levels of advanced glycosylated end products which accumulate as a result of the aging process and the presence of systemic disease.

The ClearPath scan is pain free, takes just six seconds and produces an immediate, quantitative result available to the patent and healthcare provider. Unlike some eye exams, the scan does not require dilation or other special preparation by the patient. The ClearPath is also different from diagnostic tests in that it is completely non-invasive and does not require a blood draw to produce a result.

Receiving FDA clearance for the ClearPath is the most significant milestone to date for the company and removes the last significant risk in product development prior to marketing, said Craig Misrach, Chairman and CEO of Freedom Meditech. We are in the process of conducting additional validation studies which we anticipate will support enhanced claims in the labeling for the ClearPath including its ability to further improve patient outcomes and maximize overall public health.

The company plans to launch the ClearPath in the U.S. by the end of the second quarter 2013. Also, the company is in the process of acquiring the CE Mark for the product. The CE Mark is required to sell in the 27 countries that comprise the European Union and is a gateway to other non-regulated markets.

In clinical trial results submitted to the FDA the ClearPath proved to be more precise than standard of care ophthalmic devices marketed and widely utilized by health care providers in the U.S. today. The ClearPath demonstrated a Repeatability Coefficient of Variation (variability among measurements taken on the same eye using the same operator and device) and Reproducibility Coefficient of Variation (variability among measurements taken on the same eye using different operators and devices) of 5.8 % and 6.4% respectively.

The ClearPath is the first product from Freedom Meditech. Also in development is the I-SugarX non-invasive monitor that measures glucose levels in the aqueous of the eye. The I-SugarX is designed to be operated by holding the small handheld device, similar to a miniature telescope, in front of the eye to provide people with diabetes a convenient and pain-free alternative to the finger stick method of glucose monitoring.

About Freedom Meditech Freedom Meditech, Inc. is a medical device company focused on the commercialization of novel ophthalmic technologies for the detection of disease and management of patient health. The company maintains corporate and engineering operations in San Diego, CA with supporting research and development activities throughout the state of Ohio. For more information, visit http://www.freedom-meditech.com.

The I-SugarX is an investigational device and is limited by federal law to investigational use.

Freedom Service Dogs Launches 'Free A Hero' Campaign

Casts awareness of nonprofit's unique model

Englewood, Colo. (PRWEB) February 12, 2013

Unlike most service dog organizations, FSD will get its dogs through close working relations with not only local Colorado shelters and rescues, but also organizations nationwide. This includes alerts by participating organizations about dogs that may have a high propensity for training and service work. FSD trainers then take the dogs to their Englewood, Colo. campus, where theyll spend the next 6 to 12 months learning up to 50 different commands, including opening doors, retrieving items, pulling wheelchairs, going for help, turning on lights and enhancing social interaction.

Any dog who does not officially graduate as a service dog, is released from the program and adopted into a loving home by FSD. The organizations website features dogs available for adoption.

The campaign is the end result of a grant given to FSD by PURE Brand Communications. The Denver based agency donated $75,000 in services and worked with FSD for a majority of 2012 to create the campaign.

We have an amazing story to tell and PURE Brand Communications recognized right away that it could be done much better. They were able to immediately capture the need these amazing and very capable dogs have to be freed from the shelter to fulfill their greater destiny of service dog, states Sharan Wilson, executive director. In almost every instance of placing a dog with a client, we receive feedback that their service dog is truly their hero. They are in awe of how their life has been enhanced. These dogs truly do go from possibly not making it out of a shelter to changing another persons life in less than a year.

The captivating photos featured in the campaign are credited to Ashleigh Miller Photography, who also donated hours of work for the campaign. Explore Communications was able to secure donated billboard space throughout Colorado, enabling FSD to obtain exposure it otherwise would not be able to afford.

Currently, FSD has over 60 clients on the wait list for a service dog. The process can sometimes take over a year to complete due to demand.

Bills on abortion, "religious freedom" shot down by Democrats

Cathy and Randy Licht and their adopted daughter, Emma, who was born in China, listen to testimony Monday on Senate Bill 56, which would ban sex-selection abortions. The measure failed on a party-line vote. (Lynn Bartels, The Denver Post)

A Senate bill that would ban sex-selection abortions and a House measure to "preserve religious freedom" died in their Democratic-controlled committee hearings Monday.

Both measures are among the pieces of socially conservative legislation introduced this session by Republicans, despite efforts by some party members to move the party more to the center after their November drubbing.

Sen. Ted Harvey, R-Highlands Ranch, said he introduced the bill because there is growing evidence that in some cultures pregnant women are having abortions after learning they are carrying a girl.

"We might disagree about when life begins or whether a mother has a right to use abortion for means of birth control, but I hope there is no disagreement about which gender has more human value than the other," he said.

The Senate Judiciary Committee killed Senate Bill 56 on a party-line vote 2-3 vote, with both Republicans in favor and all three Democrats opposed.

"I think as a physician I would be concerned about asking someone their motive for having an abortion," said Sen. Irene Aguilar, D-Denver, who is a medical doctor.

Those who testified for the measure include Cathy and Randy Licht of Monument, who appeared with their 10-year-old daughter, Emma, whom they adopted from China.

"Just to give you a heads up, I missed dodgeball and a Chinese New Year's celebration to see if I can save a person's life," Emma told the committee.

Testifying against the bill was Laura Reinsch, the political organizer at NARAL Pro-Choice Colorado.

AxioMed® Spine Corporation Announces Freedom® Cervical Disc European Introduction

GARFIELD HEIGHTS, Ohio--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

AxioMed Spine Corporation (www.axiomed.com) announces the commercial introduction of its Freedom Cervical Disc in Europe with a successful implantation in Switzerland. The Freedom Cervical Disc received CE Mark in 2012. AxioMed will also conduct a multi-center Freedom Cervical Disc study as a post-market assessment of the total disc replacement device for the treatment of cervical degenerative disc disease. The studys clinical results are expected to be used in support of a future Investigational Device Exemption (IDE) application to the U.S. FDA and to support regulatory approval in other markets outside of the EU.

AxioMeds first product, the Freedom Lumbar Disc, received CE Mark in 2009. Results from the lumbar European post-market assessment study were published in the SAS Journal in December 2011. AxioMed is also engaged in a U.S. FDA IDE study of the Freedom Lumbar Disc. The Company is an ISO 13485:2003 certified manufacturer of the Freedom Lumbar and Cervical Discs.

Patrick McBrayer, AxioMeds President and CEO stated, AxioMed supported a clinical study of its Freedom Lumbar Disc in Europe, and we are likewise committed to a European clinical study of our latest product, the Freedom Cervical Disc. Our European lumbar clinical data was published in a respected peer-reviewed spine journal and demonstrated that the Freedom technology has provided patients lumbar pain relief, reduced disability and improved lifestyle, based on monitored outcomes. We expect similar results from our Freedom Cervical Disc. Spine surgeons at clinics in Switzerland, Germany, and the U.K. will participate in this study.

Jim Kuras, the Companys Chief Operating Officer added, The Freedom Cervical Discs unique asymmetrical design and resulting biomechanics represent an advancement beyond the first generation total disc technologies, and better accommodate the cervical anatomy and spinal function. The differentiated design, with multiple footprints and heights combined with a wedge angle, provide the surgeon with an array of implants to address patient specific surgical requirements. First generation total disc replacement devices incorporate a metal-on-metal or metal-on-polyethylene ball and socket design and have resulted in design and functional limitations. The Freedom Lumbar and Cervical Disc technology is a second generation, viscoelastic polymer one-piece spinal disc replacement prosthesis that provides a combination of stability, compressibility and controlled motion that closely replicates the natural function of the native disc. The surgical procedure requires a limited number of instruments, is simple and reproducible, and requires no bone-milling or excess sculpting of the intervertebral body endplates to implant the device.

Neal Defibaugh, AxioMeds Vice President of Clinical and Regulatory Affairs, further commented, AxioMed is committed to conduct a Freedom Cervical Disc study in Europe that supports our goal of post-market surveillance. The clinical study will provide additional data that complements the current, extensive biomechanical and biocompatibility test data that has been completed for the Freedom Cervical Disc. These results will be used to support the devices IDE regulatory approval pathway as well as additional requirements outside the EU. As with the Freedom Lumbar Disc, AxioMed intends to include economic endpoints to accompany the requirements of the contemplated Freedom Cervical Disc IDE study.

About AxioMed Spine Corporation

AxioMeds mission is to develop products focused on spinal function for patients with degenerative spine disease, thus advancing the standard of care beyond fusion and first generation total disc replacement. The Companys leading products, the Freedom Lumbar and Cervical Discs, were developed and designed by a team of clinicians and experts in the fields of biomechanics, pathology, spinal surgery and polymer science. The Freedom Lumbar and Cervical Discs have received CE Mark approval for distribution in the European Union. Additionally, the Company is pursuing U.S. regulatory approval for its Freedom technology. Focusing on restoration of the natural function of the spine, AxioMed will enhance human health through research, innovation, development and service world-wide.
