ESGR Announces Nominees for 2013 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award

ARLINGTON, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), a Department of Defense operational committee, received 2,899 nominations for the 2013 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award. The Freedom Award is the Department of Defenses highest recognition for employers supporting employees serving in the Guard and Reserve. Up to 15 award recipients will be announced this summer and honored in Washington, D.C. later this year at the 18th annual Freedom Award ceremony. Past award recipients have met with senior leaders of the White House and Department of Defense as part of the award recognition.

Guard and Reserve Service members, or family members acting on their behalf, nominated their civilian employers for the Freedom Award during the 12-week nomination season that closed in January. Even with recent draw downs in Afghanistan, ongoing national security demands and historic humanitarian relief missions have continued to call service members away from their civilian lives. Supportive employers are critical to helping restore stability and peace of mind for these Citizen Warriors and their loved ones.

"Every year, these nominations demonstrate the strength of our employers' commitment to supporting our Guardsmen and Reservists," said ESGR National Chair James G. Rebholz. "We applaud all the National Guard and Reserve Service members who took the time to tell the DoD why their employers are exceptional, and we are grateful to the 2013 nominees for providing our Citizen Warriors with the assistance and encouragement they rely on while answering the call to duty."

Nearly one-half of the U.S. military is comprised of Guard and Reserve members. While most Guard and Reserve employers proudly support their military employees, Freedom Award recipients are recognized for going to extraordinary lengths for their Guardsmen and Reservists. This years nominees represent diverse industries including airlines, grocery store chains, national retail brands and IT companies, as well as small businesses, and state and local governments.

A list of nominations from all 50 states, Guam-CNMI, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and the District of Columbia are available at http://www.FreedomAward.mil. Semifinalists for the 2013 Freedom Award will be announced later this spring.

About ESGR and the Freedom Award:

The Freedom Award was instituted in 1996 under the auspices of ESGR to recognize exceptional support from the employer community. In the years since, 175 employers have been honored with the award. ESGR develops and maintains employer support for Guard and Reserve service. ESGR advocates relevant initiatives, recognizes outstanding support, increases awareness of applicable laws, and resolves conflict between service members and employers. Paramount to ESGR's mission is encouraging employment of Guardsmen and Reservists who bring integrity, global perspective and proven leadership to the civilian workforce.

Freedom latest victim in supermarket wars

Freedom Foods (FNP.AX), maker of soy, almond and milk products has seen its products suddenly dropped from 500 Woolworths Limiteds (WOW.AX) stores.

Despite selling really well, and growing at over 15%, Woolworths have decided to reduce the distribution of Australias Own Organic range of soy, rice and almond milks to less than 280 stores, said Michael Bracka, managing director of Freedom.

He says that he was never told the reason, but believes it may be because the giant supermarket wants to sell more of its own private label products.

Freedom is not the first to be squeezed out of the supermarket chains, and appears unlikely to be the last. Gourmet Food Group, the maker of iconic Rosella tomato sauce, was placed into receivership last year. Coles owned by Wesfarmers Limited (WES.AX) stopped selling Mainland cheeses produced by New Zealand dairy giant Fonterra (FSF.AX), last year.

A spokesperson for Woolworths said the Freedom decision was taken after the company decided to only stock products in stores where customers show a high degree of loyalty to the Freedom range.

Both Coles and Woolworths are trying to increase the number of home brand products on their shelves, as they attempt to increase their margins. Private label products have higher margins, because the supermarkets have greater control over producers and suppliers prices.

According to the Australian Food and Grocery Council, which represents suppliers, private labels were 25% of supermarket sales in 2010. Should Australia follow the trend in Europe, which has up to 50% of total sales in private labels. That could decimate Australian manufacturers.

Exports are also out of the question, because of the high Australian dollar, leaving manufacturers stuck between a rock and a hard place.

Foolish takeaway

Australias food manufacturing industry will be hoping that the Australian consumer and Competition Commission (ACCC) takes strong action against the supermarket giants. The ACCC is conducting an investigation into their practices after receiving a number of complaints from suppliers.

Lewis awarded freedom of London

Homeland star Damian Lewis has received the freedom of the City of London in recognition of his achievements as an actor.

The London-born actor picked up a Golden Globe award earlier this year for his role as Marine Sergeant Nicholas Brody in the hit TV series.

He said the honour was "one of the greatest I've ever received".

The freedom of the City dates back to 1237 and is offered to individuals to celebrate a significant achievement.

Other recent recipients include Sir Michael Caine and London 2012 Paralympian David Weir.

Receiving the award at the City's Guildhall, Lewis said: "It's remarkable, I'm still surprised. I wasn't quite sure if they'd got the right person, so I'm very happy to be here. It's a rare occasion."

Lewis, 42, was educated at Eton College and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, from where he graduated in 1993.

The actor, also known for playing Soames Forsyte in ITV's The Forsyte Saga and Major Richard D. Winters in the US mini-series Band Of Brothers, said he felt strongly connected to London.

Fuel Freedom Foundation Appoints New Director of Research

IRVINE, CA--(Marketwire - Mar 19, 2013) - Fuel Freedom Foundation, a nonpartisan, nonprofit campaign dedicated to breaking America's oil addiction, announces Michael D. Jackson as its new Director of Research.

Fuel Freedom Foundation advocates for an open fuel market to enable cheaper, cleaner, American-made replacement fuels to compete fairly with gasoline at the pump. Competition will drive down transportation fuel prices, create jobs and promote innovation. Jackson's 40 years of experience working on feasibility studies and full-scale demonstrations of alternative fuels and energy systems complements the foundation's efforts, and will provide insight and solid direction in research project decisions.

Prior to joining Fuel Freedom Foundation, Jackson served as senior director of Transportation Technology at TIAX LLC, a laboratory-based technology development company that takes early-stage inventions and transforms them into technology-enabled products ready for commercialization. There, Jackson was responsible for transportation policies and technologies toward improving vehicle emissions and fuel economy.

"I am most pleased to be joining Fuel Freedom Foundation. The Transportation Technology group at TIAX has played a key role in demonstrating the viability of cleaner replacement fuels in the transportation sector, and helps to establish both supply- and demand-side measures to encourage the use of these fuels," said Jackson. "I look forward to continuing my work at Fuel Freedom Foundation in the effort to demonstrate the viability of replacement fuels like ethanol, methanol and natural gas. The goal is to enable the current vehicle fleet to utilize these abundant, domestic fuels, and then drive mass adoption for them and end America's addiction to oil."

Opening the fuels market by breaking the oil monopoly is America's next giant leap forward. By commercializing cheaper, cleaner and domestically produced replacement fuels, we can strengthen the economy, relieve families from the burden of high gasoline prices, secure our nation from oil-producing adversarial countries and significantly reduce harmful air toxins. Enabling cars to utilize replacement fuels is safe and most cars would require simple, inexpensive modifications to become flex fuel.

Jackson is internationally recognized for his work on low-emission, heavy-duty engines and vehicles. He has worked with California agencies on demonstrating the feasibility of alternative fuels for light- and heavy-duty vehicles, developing a cost-benefit analysis suggesting goals to reduce California's dependence on petroleum, and helping develop the California Hydrogen Highway Network and Alternative Fuels Plan. In addition, he has provided expert testimony to Congress and to California legislative entities on the use of alternative fuels in the transportation sector. He has also been an expert witness on litigation regarding California's greenhouse gas vehicle regulations and Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether (MTBE) contamination.

"Michael's background and knowledge of transportation policy, fuel and emissions technology and feasibility of transitioning to replacement fuels gives Fuel Freedom Foundation a strategic edge, as we move forward to attain our goal of ending America's addiction to oil," said Eyal Aronoff, Co-Founder of Fuel Freedom Foundation. "Michael will be instrumental to our efforts and an asset to our team."

Please visit http://www.fuelfreedom.org to learn more about how you can join the Fuel Freedom team, get involved, and help end America's addiction to oil.

About Fuel FreedomFuel Freedom Foundation is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to breaking the U.S. economy's oil addiction by powering cars and trucks with cheaper, cleaner, healthier American replacement fuels. Consumers could easily convert their cars to run on replacement fuels for gasoline, but outdated regulations and entrenched commercial interests stand in the way. The Fuel Freedom campaign works to remove barriers to competition so that natural gas, methanol, ethanol and electricity can compete on equal footing with gasoline at the pump and the dealership. Achieving Fuel Freedom will lower fuel prices, create jobs, spur economic growth, reduce pollution, and improve national and global security. Freedom for Somali jailed over rape interview

Abdiaziz Abdinuur... international outrage over his jailing. Photo: AFP

MOGADISHU: Somalia's Supreme Court has freed a reporter imprisoned for interviewing a woman who alleged she had been raped by soldiers, in a case that sparked widespread international criticism.

Supreme Court judge Aidid Abdulahi Ilkahanaf said the charges had been dropped and the court "has given journalist Abdiaziz Abdinuur his freedom back".

Both Abdinuur and the woman were initially sentenced to a year in prison for "offending state institutions". But all charges were dropped against the woman earlier this month, while Abdinuur's sentence was halved.

His release, following more than two months' incarceration and after an appeals court ruled he must remain in jail, came as a surprise to many.

The 25-year-old reporter walked out of the courtroom offering prayers of thanks for his release and thanking those who had supported him.

"I'm very happy that I got my freedom back, I thank those who worked in this process that helped my release, including my lawyers," he said.

Abdinuur was detained on January 10 while researching sexual violence in Somalia, but did not air or print a story after interviewing the woman.

He was also found guilty of "making a false interview and entering the house of a woman whose husband was not present".

Freedom Drug Rehab Releases Family Survival Guide to a Loved One’s Addiction Treatment

Freedom Treatment Center offers personalized recovery programs to help people overcome drug and alcohol addiction and sustain a life of successful recovery. Located in Southern Michigan, the facility has welcomed people from across the nation and is now reaching out to all the families of those suffering from addiction with its Family Survival Guide to a Loved Ones Addiction Treatment.

Albion, MI (PRWEB) March 18, 2013

The guide, which is available online at the Freedom Treatment Center website, begins by noting that a familys struggle with addiction can be equally as painful as the person's struggling with addiction. Family members are typically not desensitized to the situation and can neither escape reality through nor blame their behaviors on substance abuse. Family members can typically very clearly see the harm befalling a loved one, even if the loved one is unable to see or admit to the problem.

Watching a loved being brought down by addiction can be very, very painful for friends and family, said Freedom Treatment Center representative Brian Kuehne. Their pain may prompt them to do things they think are helping their loved one when in reality they may be hurting them. Our guide can help family and friends understand addiction and choose the best course to take.

Freedoms Family Survival Guide offers suggestions and a plan of action for a family to effectively deal with addiction in a loved one. Key points include identifying the problem as early as possible and ensuring the family members themselves do not add to the problem. Family members and friends who are unaware of addictions insidious and manipulative features may unknowingly become enablers that only serve to fuel the addiction to a deeper level.

Tough love can sometimes be the answer, [ABC News reports, especially when the person ignores house rules, betrays trust or otherwise harms the family with addictive behaviors. An even more drastic move is an intervention, which may seem severe but may be the only way to save a loved ones life.

Our Family Survival Guide offers strategies on getting a person suffering from addiction into treatment and what to do during and after the treatment, Kuehne said. We have seen families heed the suggestions by attending group therapy sessions and supporting their loved ones at every step of their recovery. This allows family members to grow and heal individually and as a family.

Located in a semi-residential pocket of Southern Michigan, Freedom Treatment Center provides the soothing and safe environment and assistance so vital for helping people overcome drug and alcohol addiction. Treatment begins with a natural detoxification and continues with counseling, education and lifestyle changes that help ensure an ongoing and successful recovery.

OAKLEY -- Freedom High School here has lost out on the grand prize in a national contest for a wealth of technology.

Sponsored by Samsung, the competition recently awarded prizes to five grand prize winners, one of which was determined by the number of votes schools received from the public.

Freedom High received 4,908 votes as compared with the 72,441 that a Los Angeles high school collected in this "Community Choice" award category.

Each of the five schools won approximately $110,000 in electronic equipment, such smart boards, LED televisions and laptop computers.

Freedom High School didn't leave empty-handed, however.

Environmental sciences teacher John Sierra, who entered the contest along with 1,615 other schools, survived two cuts before being eliminated in the final round.

As semifinalists, he and his students won a Samsung camcorder, laptop, and Adobe video editing software to create a video, which they entered in the next round of competition.

The clip they submitted showed how the nearly 6,000-square-foot garden of native plants they're creating will improve the local environment by teaching the importance of water conservation and habitat preservation.

‘Marxist’ Obama crushes freedom , conservatives say

OXON HILL, Maryland - Barack Obama is a closet Marxist; liberty, freedom and the American way are under attack; and the federal government is waging a campaign to indoctrinate families.

Welcome to CPAC.

The Conservative Political Action Conference, an annual gathering of grass-roots conservatives, represents a mass meeting of ardent activists eager to swap views on gay marriage, guns, abortion and the economy.

Uniting many attendees, however, is the overriding worldview that the Obama administration and the Democrats are engaged in a sinister campaign to erode their freedoms of religion, consumer choices, weapons and economy.

At a small stand in the conference hall, 58-year-old Cliff Kincaid of the Accuracy in Media watchdog group sold and distributed books and brochures arguing that Obama was brought up as a communist and is therefore a Marxist president.

"He employs a lot of Marxist class warfare rhetoric in order to divide and polarize the American people," said Kincaid.

"Freedoms have not vanished completely, we still have certain First Amendment rights," he added, referring to the freedoms of religion, speech and assembly enshrined in the US Constitution.

"But he has diminished the power of the United States internationally, he is supporting groups like the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt and the Middle East which are anti-American."

The vision of an America under siege is a recurring theme at CPAC, where it is hard to walk even a few steps without being confronted by a leaflet, poster or T-shirt warning of a United States in decline.

The film "America at Risk" was projected onto a screen in one room, while in another, a group distributed "The Ultimate Obama Survival Guide," which teaches conservatives "how to survive, thrive and prosper during Obamageddon."

Don’t snuff out beacon of freedom

BRITAINS long, proud status as a beacon of Press freedom is under threat tomorrow, warn anti-censorship crusaders across the world.

It will be SNUFFED OUT if MPs back new laws to control newspapers, they say.

A global alliance of free speech campaigners predicted nations eager to muzzle journalists will be watching the historic Commons showdown.

They will be looking for a signal to crack down on their own newspapers.

Tyrant ... Mugabe

Rex Features

It follows warnings tyrants such as Zimbabwes Robert Mugabe will seize on new UK laws to further curb free speech in their own countries.

Press freedom fighters urged MPs NOT to sign a new tough system of self-regulation into law.

They warned it would have grave implications across the world.

Lawsuit Tests Bloggers’ Freedom of Speech Rights

A colleague of the late conservative blogger Andrew Breitbart is asking a federal court of appeals to throw out a defamation case brought against him by former government employee Shirley Sherrod, saying the lawsuit violates the blogger's right to freedom of speech.

Sherrod was ousted from her job as an Agriculture Department rural development official in 2010 after Breitbart posted an edited video of Sherrod, who is black, supposedly making racist remarks. She sued Breitbart, his employee Larry O'Connor and an unnamed defendant for defamation and emotional distress after USDA officials asked her to resign and the video ignited a racial firestorm. Sherrod's lawyers say the unnamed defendant is the person whom they believe passed the video on to Breitbart, though the person's identity remains unknown.

Breitbart died unexpectedly a year ago, and his status in the case is unclear as his family does not appear to have notified the court of an estate that can be sued.

The case argued before the court of appeals Friday is one of the first high-profile federal lawsuits to test the freedom of speech rights of bloggers. Backed by large news organizations including the New York Times Co., Washington Post Co. and Dow Jones & Company, Inc., who have filed friend-of-the-court briefs in the case, O'Connor's lawyers argued to have the case dismissed under a District of Columbia statute that aims to prevent the silencing of critics through lawsuits. A federal district court judge rejected their motion to dismiss, citing timing and jurisdictional issues, prompting the appeal.

The lawyers told the court of appeals that O'Connor and Breitbart, before he died, stood by the content, saying the blog post was opinion.

"What happened here is what happens in journalism every day," said Bruce Brown, a lawyer for O'Connor.

Sherrod's lawyers disagree and say dismissal under the District of Columbia statute would violate their right to a trial. The video on Breitbart's website turned out to be edited, and when Sherrod's full speech to an NAACP group earlier that year came to light, it became clear that her remarks about an initial reluctance to help a white farmer decades ago were not racist but an attempt at telling a story of racial reconciliation. Once that was obvious, Sherrod received public apologies from the administration even from President Barack Obama himself and an offer to return to the Agriculture Department, which she declined.

Sherrod's 2011 lawsuit says the incident affected her sleep and caused her back pain. It contends that she was damaged by having her "integrity, impartiality and motivations questioned, making it difficult (if not impossible) for her to continue her life's work assisting poor farmers in rural areas" even though she was invited to return to the department.

The video was posted amid ongoing friction between the NAACP and the tea party movement, each of which were accusing the other of having racist elements among their ranks. Breitbart said at the time that the video showed the NAACP condoning racist comments from a government official.

The full video, however, shows Sherrod explaining to the audience how she eventually became friends with the farmer and helped him save his land from foreclosure.

Freedom Drug Rehab Starts New Therapeutic Training Routines Course

Freedom Treatment Center is a drug and alcohol recovery facility in Southern Michigan that offers individualized treatment programs to help overcome addiction and enter a successful life of recovery. The center started a new therapeutic training routines course that helps restore the life skills often lost in the cycle of addiction.

Albion, MI (PRWEB) March 16, 2013

Our new therapeutic training routines course works as a rehabilitation tool for the mind, said Freedom Treatment Center representative Brian Kuehne. It helps people regain skills they lost or have long stopped using so they may better deal with their addiction and, above all, better deal with life.

The course teaches people to stop running or attempting to hide from their issues and instead work on their abilities to confront, control and communicate. Simple drills in a classroom setting are a large part of the re-learning process that help people shed old behaviors and incorporate new ones that are conducive to recovery. The course notes that when addiction takes over, people generally lose their ability to face uncomfortable feelings, situations and things. This can lead to avoidance or explosive behaviors when confronted with anything that makes them uncomfortable.

They underlying desire to get rid of uncomfortable situations at all costs continues to drive an addiction long after the substance is gone, Kuehne said. We help people instead learn to confront the uncomfortable situations and things, control their behaviors and communicate in a way that makes the situation better, not worse.

The National Institute on Drug Abuse recognizes an effective recovery program must go deeper than treating people's drug abuse and include a focus on all of their needs. Those needs include their ability to cope with life without the use of alcohol or drugs.

Even if those recovering from drug or alcohol abuse do not once again turn to alcohol or drugs to avoid discomfort, they can easily turn to gambling, sex or other compulsive behaviors that serve the same purpose drugs and alcohol did: a means of escape. Freedom Treatment Centers new therapeutic training routines course helps people stop running so they can start living.

"Drug and alcohol abuse is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to addiction," Kuehne said. "Our new course helps correct the real issues."

Freedom ‘s Conzola earns gold

LEWISBURG LEWISBURG - "I don't like being seeded first," Freedom's Peter Conzola said. So he was pleased that in the 100 backstroke final, he was seeded seventh based on his morning preliminary time, and was 'hiding" in lane 1.

In fifth place after 50 yards, Conzola turned up the heat and won the race, earning the only gold medal among area boys in the PIAA state swimming and diving championships at Bucknell University's Kinney Natatorium.

"The last 25 of the race I knew it was the last race of mu high school season," Conzola said. "I put everything I had into that last moment. I thought I was behind. Coming up to the last wall I looked over and saw everyone else. I said 'I gotta go. I sometimes have a tendency to bring it out very fast and have good closing speed. This is not the way I would have strategized the race. I like to go out fast and be ahead of everyone, be comfortable. Then just control it the rest of the way. I don't like to be flailing on the last lap. If I'm seeded first I always psych myself out. The pressure's on me to win and everything."

Freedom's Sam Magnan shaved some time of his preliminary tie in the 500 free, but North allegheny's Zachary Buerger shaved even more. Buerger took the gold and Magnan thee silver in the race.

Buerger took off in the first lap and never looked back. "I saw him," Magnan said. "I thought I could catch him and put my head down and gave it all I had in the last lap, but he had too big a lead."

Magnan changed his breathing side every length of the pool so he could watch Buerger.

"Overall, I'm happy with the race," he added. "I'm only a sophomore, so I'll have other chances to get a gold medal. A silver medal isn't that bad.

Zachary Kantz from Bangor matched his silver medal in Friday's 50 freestyle with another silver in the 100 free. Upper Dublin's Robert Bantley won the 100.

Kantz was leading after 50 yards in the 100 and had almost a body length lead going into the final turn.

"I died," Kantz said. "I just didn't have it in me today. My last turn wasn't the best and that cost me the race. After my second turn i got a little cocky I guess."
