Freedom Bats Quieted in 5-1 Loss to River City

May 17, 2013 - Frontier League (FL) Florence Freedom After an Opening Night rout of the River City Rascals last night, the Florence Freedom bats went quiet in a 5-1 loss to the Rascals in game two of a three game series at University of Cincinnati Medical Center Stadium.

River City Starter Tommy Mendoza (W, 1-0) threw six innings of five-hit, one-run ball and got just enough production from his lineup to beat the Freedom and even the series at a game each.

River City wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as they put up two runs in the top of the first inning. Rascals left fielder Eric Williams led off the game with a walk followed up two batters later with another free pass to first baseman Jason Taylor. With DH Phil Wunderlich at the plate, the Rascals attempted a double steal. The throw from Freedom catcher Jimmy Jacquot went into centerfield allowing Williams to score. Wunderlich then grounded out to second base to score Taylor.

The Freedom cut the lead in half in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI single by DH Byron Wiley, scoring second baseman Eric Groff.

With one out in the top of the fourth, Rascals center fielder Evan Crawford doubled to left field, stole third and then scored on a sacrifice fly from second baseman Andy Scott to give the Rascals a 3-1 lead.

Freedom Starting Pitcher Justice French (L, 0-1) went 5 1/3 innings in his Florence debut, surrendering three runs, but only two earned.

River City would add another run in the seventh on a two-out throwing error by Freedom shortstop Junior Arrojo and would add one more in the top of the ninth on a wild pitch by Freedom reliever Jason Wilson. None of River City's five runs came on base hits.

The Freedom and Rascals meet again tomorrow night for the rubber match of this three-game season opening series. First pitch is 6:05 at UCMC Stadium, gates open at 5:05. Tickets are available at the UCMC Stadium box office or by phone at (859) 594-HITS.

Press freedom – and its limitations

Western democracies, like the US, are seen as safe havens for press freedom. Yet, the ongoing AP scandal suggests that surveillance of journalists is no taboo. What is the situation in Germany?

There had been a serious information leak, causing nothing less than a threat to US citizens - that's how US Secretary of Justice Eric Holder justified US government surveillance of Associated Press (AP) journalists. Surveillance in this case meant the collection of telephone records, allowing for the localization of the journalist's confidential sources.

Among the media, this has caused considerable outrage - both in the US and abroad, including Germany. The Germanjournalist's association (DJV) has condemned the surveillance as an "act against freedom of the press." After all, without the - often anonymous - sources, investigative reporting would be close to impossible. At the same time, however, there is little fear that German journalists might be in for something similar.

What is a "threat to security"?

"For Germany, this is something unthinkable," Michael Rediske, the head of the Berlin-Brandenburg branch of the journalist's association told DW.

The Federal Constitutional Court, being the warden of Germany'sconstitution where press freedom is enshrined, sees thisas afar too important value, Rediske said.

As an example, hementioned the so-called "Cicero Affair:" In 2005, German law enforcement searched the offices of "Cicero" magazine after it had published information form a confidential government file. Following the search, the publication filed a lawsuit - and won.

In the case of the United States, there isa concern for terror andthe looming threat it poses. Thisplays an important role when dealing with issues of press freedom, said Wolfgang Donsbach of Dresden Technical University (TU). While there is no way to justify the government taking up such measures, it is at least partly understandable, he explained.

To justify measures like these, they are oftenlinked to security issues. It's a point that Rediske, who also heads the German section of Reporters without Borders, doesn't want to accept. "If its about preventing a crime, journalists will be reasonable enough not to publish information. But to simply classify information as 'relevant to security' is a well-known game the authorities play," Rediske said.

Tennis: Albemarle tops Freedom-South Riding to claim Northwest Region title

Despite a lightning delay that moved the action from outdoor courts to an indoor facility at the University of Virginia on Thursday, Albemarles boys tennis squad responded with consistently strong play all afternoon against Freedom-South Riding, winning 5-2 to claim the AAA Northwest Region boys tennis team championship in Charlottesville.

With a runner-up finish in the region, the Eagles will still advance to play in the state quarterfinals on May 31 in Newport News. They will meet the winner of the Northern Region, which will be decided in Fairfax next Tuesday.

Menacing weather threatened Thursdays showdown, and the Patriots seized control despite losing the top two singles matchups. Alex Cragg gave the Eagles the lead early, beating Albamerles Doug Corbett in the No. 1 singles match, 6-0, 6-0. Brian Park defeated Boris Yang, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 2 singles, but the Patriots cleaned up the remaining four singles matches and carried a 4-2 lead into doubles. In the No. 3 slot, Albemarles Jake Brooks defeated Soren Charmsaz, 6-2, 6-2; Charlie Shepard beat Joseph Kim, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 4; David Grbic beat Timothy Yao in No. 5 singles, 6-2, 6-4; and Joey Michel dropped Anchit Jolla, 6-2, 6-4.

Albamerle clinched the match at No. 3 doubles, as Shepard and Grbic defeated Yao and Jolla, 6-3, 6-2.

Freedom-South Riding, which finished the season 13-8 after graduating eight seniors from last years team, is still experienced enough to make a run in the state tournament, Coach John Bell said Thursday.

We had a significant rebuilding year. To go back all the way to the region finals, given what we had to overcome this year, Im really proud of the team, Bell said. The good thing about our boys is that theyre in great shape, theyre playing their best tennis right now, and theyve been to states before. So its not their first time doing this.

Freedom Offense Explodes in 12-6 Opening Night Win over River City

May 16, 2013 - Frontier League (FL) Florence Freedom The Florence Freedom offense exploded for seven runs in the sixth inning to roll past the River City Rascals 12-6 on Opening Night at UC Medical Center Stadium.

The Rascals opened the scoring in the top of the first inning with a two-run triple by centerfielder Evan Crawford to take a 2-0 lead. The Freedom responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the first on a two-run throwing error by River City second baseman Will Block.

The game stayed tied until the bottom of the fourth inning when Kyle Bluestein cranked a two-run home run off of River City starting pitcher Casey Barnes into the Rascals bullpen behind the left field wall to give the Freedom a 4-2 lead after four innings.

But the Rascals weren't finished scoring yet. Rascals catcher Andrew Edge led off the top of the sixth inning with a walk. Shortstop Bo Cuthbertson was hit by Freedom starter Brent Choban. It would be Choban's last batter as he gave way to Daniel DeSimone. DeSimone (W, 1-0) then gave up a two out double to Rascals DH Jason Taylor to tie the game at four.

From then on out it would be all Freedom. They sent 10 men to the plate in the bottom of the sixth. DH Byron Wiley, Kyle Bluestein, first baseman Bo Folkinga and second baseman Eric Groff all had RBI hits off of Rascals right-hander Cameron Bayne (L, (0-1), but the big blow came off the bat of left fielder David Harris, who hit a 2-run home run to put the Freedom up 11-4 after six innings.

The Freedom would tack on another run in the seventh with a solo home run off the bat of catcher Jimmy Jacquot. River City would score one run in the eighth and one more in the ninth, but the Freedom bullpen would hold the lead and close out a 12-6 win on Opening Night.

The Freedom and Rascals meet again tomorrow night for game two of three in this season opening series. First pitch is 6:35 at UC Medical Center Stadium. Tickets are available at the UC Medical Center Stadium box office or by phone at (859) 594-HITS.

Hatch wants IRS probe to expand, include Freedom Path

(Scott Sommerdorf | Tribune file photo) Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, is leading a group of Republicans seeking a new line of inquiry in the IRS scandal -- one aimed at the release of confidential documents, including those from a group that spent $570,000 helping to re-elect the Utah senator.

Washington A group of Senate Republicans led by Sen. Orrin Hatch called for a new investigation into the Internal Revenue Service on Thursday, focused on the improper release of information on nine conservative groups, including one that supported Hatch in his 2012 re-election campaign.

Last December, the IRS gave the website ProPublica the applications of 31 politically active groups with tax-exempt status, but nine of them had not been approved or denied. By law, the applications are confidential documents until the IRS makes a determination.

"We believe that disclosure of applications that are still pending is a violation of the Internal Revenue Code and other related provisions, which could result in civil and criminal penalties," Hatch, R-Utah, wrote in a letter to the inspector general at the Treasury Department signed by all of the Republicans on the Senate Finance Committee.

ProPublica decided to release six of those nine applications, though it redacted financial information. One of them belonged to Freedom Path, a group with deep ties to Hatch that was created in January 2011 and spent at least $570,000 in support of the senators campaign for a seventh and, he has vowed, his final term in office.

Freedom Path operated as a tax-exempt social welfare organization as its application with the IRS was pending. That designation allowed it to withhold any public information on its donors and delay disclosure of its board of directors.

The IRS has still not ruled on Freedom Paths application and the group feels that it was among those targeted for extra scrutiny in a scandal that has already resulted in President Barack Obama firing the tax agencys acting commissioner, Steven Miller.

Freedom Path has yet to respond to a request for comment.

The groups board is comprised of a former Hatch employee and two political operatives who worked for the National Republican Senatorial Committee at a time when Hatch was the vice chairman. Freedom Path, which produced mailers and TV ads that supported Hatch and opposed his Republican challenger, also shared some vendors with the Hatch campaign, though they said no improper coordination took place.

Hatchs staff also said the senator was unaware of Freedom Paths problems with the IRS until it was reported in The Salt Lake Tribune and that the call for an expanded probe of the IRS is warranted in light of recent revelations.

At Cannes, Watson revels in post-'Potter' freedom

CANNES, France (AP) Emma Watson is reveling in her post-"Potter" freedom at the Cannes Film Festival, relishing a Valley Girl role far from her wise-beyond-her-years Hermione.

The 23-year-old "Harry Potter" actress stars in Sofia Coppola's "The Bling Ring," which premiered Thursday at the French Riviera festival. The British actress plays a celebrity-obsessed, thickly accented Los Angeles teenager who, with a group of friends, burgles Hollywood stars such as Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan.

At Cannes, Watson told reporters that while she remains proud of her work on the "Potter" films, they now feel long ago.

"I'm not trying to run away from it," she said. "I've just had an amazing three or four years. I'm really re-enjoying having the chance to transform into new roles and work with new creative people."

"The Bling Ring" is based on a Vanity Fair article about the true story of teenagers who robbed celebrities like Paris Hilton and Orlando Bloom while they were out at premieres and other events. The character Watson plays, Nicki, is modeled on Alexis Neiers, who starred in the reality series "Pretty Wild."

Watson said she watched American TV shows like "The Hills," ''Keeping up With the Kardashians" and "The World According to Paris" to prepare for the role.

"It'd be very easy for Nicki to feel like a parody," Watson said. "Somehow I had to understand and empathize with her and that was really biggest challenge, second to getting the accent down. It's quite a specific dialect."

Since the "Harry Potter" films concluded in 2011 with the second part of "Deathly Hallows," Watson has gravitated to more adult films, including last year's coming-of-age tale "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" and Darren Aronofsky's Biblical epic "Noah," which recently finished shooting. She also makes a cameo as herself in this summer's "This is the End," an apocalyptic comedy.

"For Emma, it was, I think, really interesting to see an actress that you've seen in other things really transform into a completely difficult character," Coppola said.

Young actors often treat Cannes as a coming-out-party, a place to introduce themselves on a more artistically-minded stage. Watson shined with enthusiasm for her experience with the improvisation-friendly Coppola.
