Is Google’s greatest strength the freedom to fail?

Google Strategy Analysis

Google clearly has a number of strengths, but its greatest may be the freedom to fail. Google shares are up more than 28% so far in 2013 and the companys market capitalization recently topped $300 billion for the first time. Investors are bullish on Googles prospects for the future and perhaps one of the reasons is that Google has shown time and time again that it is willing to take big risks in an effort to drive innovation.

In a recent article, The Wall Street JournalsSteve Rosenbush hypothesized that Googles greatest strength may be the luxury of failure. He describes Googles strategy as a reckless, up-for-anything approach and notes that it seems to be working quite well since Googles stock is worth 50% more now than it was a year ago and revenue has climbed 30% over that period of time.

Phones equipped with the Android operating system are outselling the once-unassailable iPhone, Rosenbush wrote.Google is also building virtual reality glasses that are about to hit the market. Its drawing board includes emerging technology for autonomous cars, and who knows what else. Sure, it has had some missesits Google + social network has its fans, but has yet to achieve truly significant market traction. Its inexpensive Chromebook laptops have limited appeal, too.

Google has proven time and time again that its not afraid to fail. While some of its big gambles have crashed and burned, others have grown to become core businesses for the Internet giant. It is impossible to innovate without taking risks, and the fact that Google is more successful than most of its rivals is directly related to its willingness to take chances.

Freedom of Expression: Survey of Enrique Chagoya's artwork opens at Kala Art Institute

BERKELEY, CA.- Kala Art Institute announces Freedom of Expression, an exhibition of the work of Enrique Chagoya. Curated by Peter Selz and Sue Kubly, Freedom of Expression is a survey of Chagoyas artwork from the past thirty years, including large charcoal and pastel drawings, prints, codices and three-dimensional objects, many of them completed since 2000.

Chagoya's work incorporates historic and political subject matter to cast new interpretations of Mexico's history and current political events. It follows in the grand tradition of the great 20th Century Mexican muralists; But it is most indebted to the legendary exponents of art of social satire: Jos Guadalupe Posada and Francisco Goya.

His work invokes elements of pre-Columbian mythology, western religious iconography, and American popular culture, to address issues of Colonial conquest and its destructive wake, the problems of the border and the legacy of Mesoamerican culture. Chagoya approaches these subjects with a sharp but playful visual and verbal language, fusing a sense of irony with an incisive political and personal commentary. His innovative use of traditional media adds poignancy and surprise to his work, which are hallmarks of his art practice.

Highlights of this show include the iconic 1984 piece, Their Freedom of ExpressionThe Recovery of Their Economy, and Recession Watchdog. Other featured works include Chagoyas Homage to Goya II: Disasters of War, intaglio prints, as well as other lithographs, silkscreen prints, and digital prints.

Enrique Chagoya is professor of art and art history at Stanford University. His work is in the collections of over thirty museums, including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the de Young Museum, LACMA, the National Museum of American Art, the Whitney Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the New York Public Library. Amongst Chagoyas many awards and fellowships, he was twice recipient of NEA artist fellowships. Chagoyas relationship to Kala goes back to 1984 when he was an artist-in-residence, making prints in the Kala studios. Kalas Board of Directors honored Chagoya in 2009, with its Master Artist Award for his achievements in the field of art and education.

Freedom Bats Silent in 4-1 Loss to Rascals in Series Finale

May 18, 2013 - Frontier League (FL) Florence Freedom The Freedom bats were silent once again in a 4-1 loss to River City in the finale of a three-game season-opening series at University of Cincinnati Medical Center Stadium.

Rascals starting pitcher Justin Sarratt (W, 1-0) went six innings of one-hit shutout ball to earn his first win of the season. Sarratt held the Freedom hitless through three innings and allowed just two walks.

The game was halted for 55 minutes in the top of the fifth inning due to rain, and once the game resumed, the Rascals bats went to work. The Rascals worked back-to-back walks off of Freedom starter Brandon Mathes (L, 0-1) to open up the sixth inning.

That would be all for Mathes who allowed two runs on three hits in five-plus inning of work. Corey Deighan would enter the game for Florence and would promptly give up a single to centerfielder Evan Crawford to load the bases. Second baseman Andy Scott would then break the scoreless tie with a two-run double. The rascals would score another run one batter later on an RBI groundout by DH Steve Carrillo and would tack on one more later in the sixth on an error.

That would be all the offense the Rascals would need as they allowed just one run to the Freedom, on an eighth inning bases-loaded passed ball by catcher Anthony Foulk. Gabe Shaw (S, 1) would enter with runners on first and second and end the Freedom threat. Shaw would go on to pitch a perfect ninth to record his first save of the season.

The Freedom now have three off days before they are back in action at UCMC Stadium this Wednesday when they take on the Schaumburg Boomers in a double header. First pitch of game one is at 5:45 with game two starting 30 minutes following the conclusion of game one. Gates open at 4:45. Tickets are available at the UCMC Stadium box office or by calling (859) 594-HITS.
