Corruption and press freedom

That press freedom is a nemesis of corruption is self-evident. Even then, two recent assessments of the two civic entities provide intriguing insight into their interface.

One report is the 2013 index of press freedom issued by Reporters Without Borders. The other is a stinging report about the scope of corruption in the countries that constitute the European Union.

According to the report, Corruption alone is estimated to cost the EU economy EUR 120 billion per year, just a little less than the annual budget of the European Union.

In a press conference announcing the report, Cecilia Malmstrm, the EU Commissioner for Home Affairs, reflected on the implications in terms usually associated with African and other developing countries.

Corruption erodes trust in public institutions and in democracy, it undermines our internal market, it hampers foreign investment, it costs taxpayers millions, and in many cases it helps organised crime groups do their dirty work, Malmstrm said.

Malmstrm additionally cited a survey by Eurobarometer that found that 76 per cent of Europeans believe that corruption is widespread in their respective countries.

One in 12 Europeans has experienced or witnessed corruption in the last 12 months, and four out of 10 European companies consider corruption to be an obstacle for doing business within the EU, Malmstrm said.

For Westernpundits who comment condescendingly on others corruption as though there is something genetic about it, the EU report calls for attitude adjustment.

However, apologists of Nigerias corruption shouldnt find too much of a vindication either. While the report clearly indicates that corruption is not exclusive to any region of the world, it also makes clear that its prevalence is a relative matter. And its containment requires persistent pressure and vigilance from all, including the press.

In noting the significance of the EU corruption report, Malmstrm said: This is all the more worrying in times of economic and financial crisis. In order to pull Europe from the brink of the crisis, we need to attack corruption effectively by pulling efforts from all sides. The report will hopefully provide everyone politicians, the public, media and practitioners with a useful tool for taking national corruption policy forward.

Freedom Industries to shut down sooner rather than later

What has seemed inevitable for weeks was made official today: Freedom Industries will soon be finished as a company.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- What has seemed inevitable for weeks was made official today: Freedom Industries will soon be finished as a company.

Mark Freedlander, a lawyer representing Freedom, told U.S. Bankruptcy Court Friday morning that the company responsible for contaminating the water of 300,000 West Virginians will wind up its affairs -- including environmental remediation -- and then begin sending all its customers to its former competitors.

That will happen "sooner rather than later," Freedlander said.

All of Freedom's remaining chemical inventory will be sold in a matter of days, he said.

"It just became apparent in relatively short order," Freedlander said, "that it was not practical or financially viable" to continue operating the company.

Freedom was represented at Friday's bankruptcy hearing only by its lawyers. No company executives attended.

In a news release issued after the hearing, Gary Southern, Freedom's president, said that selling the company's inventory and shifting its business to competitors "represents Freedom's best opportunity to generate funds it needs for our environmental remediation efforts."

Southern said the company would do its best to help its employees find jobs with competitors, although job losses were inevitable.

In late January, Freedom agreed to an order from the state Department of Environmental Protection to begin tearing down its facility on the Elk River by March 15.

Freedom Industries Winding Down Operations

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A bankruptcy court hearing involving Freedom Industries Friday revealed a change of course for the company and what will happen as the investigation into the chemical spill continues.

Attorneys representing Freedom Industries said the company's problems far outweigh what it can handle and the business will eventually shut down.

Freedom Industries' CEO, Gary Southern, was not in the courtroom Friday.

Attorney Mark Freedlander represented Freedom Industries.

Freedlander said the company will remain in Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

He said after recognizing the costs, business appears to be unpractical under the circumstances.

Freedlander also said Freedom Industries' leftover inventory is being sold to existing customers and depleted.

Attorneys said the company plans to transition those customers to competitors.

Freedlander said the company hopes current employees will be able to find new positions with competitors or vendors that work with Freedom Industries.

According to Freedlander, employees and customers were made aware of the situation Friday morning.

Freedom Industries announces it will shift its sales and service support

Freedom Industries, the company responsible for the Jan. 9 chemical leak that left 300,000 people in Southern West Virginia unable to use their tap water for several days, announced Feb. 21 it is "shifting its sales and service support to other providers, exhausting its existing inventories and pledging to assist displaced employees."

The announcement came from Gary Southern, president of Freedom Industries, and went on to say the move was "in an effort to maximize resources for its top priority of environmental clean-up," at its Elk River facility where the Jan. 9 leak occurred.

Southern said the strategy "represents Freedom's best opportunity to generate funds it needs for our environmental remediation efforts."

The company filed for bankruptcy Jan. 17.

Southern said the company's moves will provide "clarity for Freedom's customers with whom Freedom will work diligently to assist in transitioning to alternate sources of supply."

"Freedom is committed to continuing to assess its strategic options going forward, taking into account what is best for the state of West Virginia, the people and businesses who call it home, our customers and creditors and all others affected by the case," Southern said in the announcement.
