Digestive Enzymes and Weight Loss: Do They Help? – Healthline

Digestive enzymes are often used to support healthy digestion and increase nutrient absorption.

Studies show that they may benefit conditions like lactose intolerance and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) (1, 2).

In addition, many people wonder if digestive enzymes could help them lose more weight.

This article reviews whether digestive enzymes can promote weight loss.

Digestive enzymes are compounds that help break down foods into smaller components that your body can absorb (3).

The three main types are:

Your body naturally produces digestive enzymes, but theyre also available in supplement form.

These supplements are often used to improve conditions like lactose intolerance and other digestive issues like celiac disease and IBS (1, 2).

Digestive enzymes help break down proteins, fats, and carbs into smaller components. Theyre produced naturally by your body and are also found in supplement form.

Some studies show that digestive enzymes may enhance the health of your gut microbiome the microorganisms that live in your digestive tract (4).

In one study, administering digestive enzymes to mice promoted the colonization of beneficial gut bacteria (5).

Plus, a test-tube study showed that pairing a probiotic supplement with digestive enzymes could help protect against changes in the gut microbiome caused by chemotherapy and a type of antibiotic (6).

Interestingly, some studies have found that the gut microbiome may play a role in weight control (7).

In fact, one review of 21 studies reported that enhancing the beneficial bacteria in your gut may reduce body mass index, fat mass, and body weight (8).

That said, more studies on the effects of digestive enzyme supplements on weight control in humans are needed.

Some test-tube and animal studies show that digestive enzymes may improve the health of your beneficial gut bacteria bacteria that may be involved in weight control.

Lipase is a digestive enzyme that boosts the absorption of fat in your body by breaking it down into glycerol and free fatty acids (9).

Some studies show that supplementing with lipase may decrease feelings of fullness (10, 11).

For example, one study in 16 adults found that those taking a lipase supplement before consuming a high fat meal reported significantly decreased stomach fullness after 1 hour, compared with a control group (10).

On the other hand, lipase inhibitors which decrease lipase levels have long been used to promote weight control by increasing the excretion of fat (12).

While more research is needed, increasing your lipase levels by taking digestive enzyme supplements could potentially increase fat absorption, thus contributing to weight gain.

Lipase may decrease feelings of fullness. On the other hand, decreasing lipase levels can promote weight loss by reducing fat absorption.

Although research shows that digestive enzymes may or may not directly increase weight loss, they could improve gut health and digestion.

They may also alleviate bloating and promote regularity, especially for those with conditions like IBS (3, 13).

Most digestive enzyme supplements contain a combination of lipase, amylase, and protease. Some types also contain other specific enzymes that can be beneficial if you have difficulty digesting certain ingredients.

Other common enzymes found in digestive enzyme supplements include:

Supplements are derived from microbial or animal sources. Although animal-based digestive enzymes are more common, microbial-based supplements may be an effective, vegan-friendly alternative (14, 15).

To ensure quality, check the ingredients label and steer clear of supplements high in fillers, additives, and preservatives. Plus, opt for supplements that have undergone third-party testing and are certified by organizations like the United States Pharmacopeia (USP).

Be sure to talk to your healthcare provider before taking a new supplement, especially if you have any underlying health conditions or are taking any medications.

Additionally, note that you should always take digestive enzymes with food to maximize their effectiveness.

Most digestive enzymes contain a combination of protease, lipase, and amylase, but they may also contain other specific enzymes to promote healthy digestion. Supplements are derived from both animal-based and microbial sources.

While digestive enzymes may not directly boost weight loss, research shows that enzyme inhibitors might.

Digestive enzyme inhibitors decrease the absorption of certain macronutrients and are sometimes used in the treatment of obesity to increase weight loss (16).

According to a review of 14 studies, supplementing with an amylase inhibitor extracted from white beans may increase both weight loss and fat loss in humans (17).

Another study showed that blocking the effects of trypsin, a protease enzyme that breaks down proteins, decreased food consumption and weight gain in rats (18).

Additionally, lipase inhibitors are used to reduce the absorption of fat, which could also result in significant weight loss (19, 20).

In particular, the lipase inhibitor called orlistat may reduce fat absorption by 30%. It does this by decreasing the production of lipase in the stomach and pancreas, resulting in weight loss (19).

One study in 40 women with obesity also found that long-term use of orlistat increased levels of certain hormones that suppress hunger and appetite (21).

However, other studies have found that orlistat could decrease these hormones and instead speed up the emptying of the stomach (22, 23, 24).

Aside from potentially affecting hormone levels, other common side effects of lipase inhibitors include diarrhea, stomach pain, and fat in the stools (19).

Enzyme inhibitors block the activity of digestive enzymes, which could promote weight loss and fat loss. However, studies have had contradicting results.

Digestive enzymes are substances that help break down macronutrients into smaller compounds to promote their absorption.

Some test-tube and animal studies show that they could improve the health of your gut microbiome, which may affect weight control.

On the other hand, digestive enzyme inhibitors have been shown to reduce food intake and increase weight loss and fat loss.

While digestive enzyme supplements may or may not directly boost weight loss, they could promote healthy digestion and regularity, especially for those with certain gastrointestinal conditions.

CBD in medicine: relief and regulation – Health Europa

MCN speaks to Dr Philipps about the science behind the health benefits of CBD and the need for standardised regulation of CBD food supplements.

Dr Elisabeth Philipps is a neuropharmacologist and practitioner in Functional Medicine with over 18 years experience. She operates a thriving health consultancy in the UK specialising in CBD, brain and gut health; where she provides expert opinion for private clients, corporate business programmes, the national media, specialist healthcare publications and health companies.

Im a neuropharmacologist by training, so Ive been aware of the medicinal therapeutic benefits of cannabis for a number of years. The endocannabinoid system was only discovered in the 1990s so its actually a relatively recent system that weve known about in the body, but its only been in the last two to three years that my focus has become much more intense on the endocannabinoid system, medicinal cannabis and CBD oil supplements; because of the rise in profile of those products.

The two products are quite different: hemp is extract of the whole plant, so the dietary benefits of hemp normally come from the hemp seed you could have the seeds ground or sprinkled on top of your food, for example; maybe hemp seed oil which makes a good salad dressing. Hemp oil extracts are rich in very beneficial omega-3 and omega-6 essential fatty acids; you also find things like protein and fibre as well as minerals and vitamins: magnesium and phosphorus, for example, are found within the hemp seeds themselves.

CBD is an even more refined extract from the hemp plant flowers rather than the seeds, so theres not so much [in the way of] dietary benefit; but it contains the compounds such as the phytocannabinoids, and other compounds such as flavonoids and terpenes, which can confer health benefits; so you get the dietary benefits from hemp seeds and hemp seed oil and you get other health benefits from consuming CBD.

[There are] three primary areas that people find CBD works for them: the sleep area, to help improve the quality of sleep; people report being able to [get to] sleep more easily, stay asleep and feel more refreshed when they wake up. [The second area is] pain, which comes in many different forms it can be nerve pain or neurogenic pain or inflammatory pain, so conditions such as arthritis, for example, or more acute conditions such as sporting injuries or general inflammatory injuries. People report taking CBD oil as helping to reduce the response to pain. Whats been very interesting in the study of CBD and phytocannabinoids in pain pathways is that not only is it blocking the pain pathways themselves in the spinal cord and brain, but also CBD acts within the parts of the brain that helps change our perception of pain. Thats really key, because its how we respond to the pain signals in our bodies that gives us the intensity of the experience; so CBD is an important component of a programme to help manage different types of pain.

The third area that I find CBD can really help is in mood, in particular [for patients who are] feeling anxious or stressed. CBD has this ability, through various pathways in the brain, to help balance the systems that help us feel better, to improve wellbeing, to improve our mood. CBD works at the neurotransmitter level, transmitting chemicals in the brain that send signals to help provide a balance. There are a number of studies coming in: theyre relatively small scale, but theyre looking at CBD oil for anxiety and for sleep and they have showed improvement in those areas; but the science is beginning to play catch-up now as well.

CBD interacts with our own endocannabinoid system and I think thats really key, because when you take a medicine its a very blunt tool: it either turns something on or turns something off; it blocks a response or it produces a response. CBD is lot more subtle than that within the body, because it works within the endocannabinoid system and that system is spread throughout our body the endocannabinoid system is in the gut, the brain, in the immune cells, in the lungs, in the skin so thats why CBD can have such a diverse number of effects.

We produce our own cannabinoids within the body to stimulate and produce effects; and CBD helps balance the bodys production and the bodys ability to activate the endocannabinoid system through its own naturally produced mediators. Theres a lot of science showing how CBD acts within the endocannabinoid system and produces its responses.

This can be a very confusing area, because there are so many products that have hit the market. First of all, a CBD food supplement is legal in the UK if it contains less than 0.2% THC or tetrahydrocannabinol. That is the cannabinoid which causes the commonly associated high or buzz that you get from marijuana; its only present in hemp in very low levels anyway and its been stripped out of CBD oil. You need to ensure that youre taking a legal product that contains less than 0.2% THC; and you can do that by asking the company for a certificate of analysis.

Every batch of CBD oil that a reputable company receives will have had a third-party laboratory testing [conducted] on that particular batch of oil, which will have a batch number so it can all be traced. That will show the breakdown of the different cannabinoids and the different constituents of that particular oil so youll be able to see not only that it contains the legal limit or less of THC, but the amount of CBD that it says on the label as well thats where the product can vary drastically, so you need to have a look at that certificate of analysis to show that it contains the CBD that you want. You will find some companies selling 0% THC products, which are very useful especially if you are drug tested for work or if youre a professional athlete. The Banned Substances Control Group (BSCG) can test for THC and other banned substances and can provide a certificate to show that you dont have any of those substances within your product. Reputable companies should have their certificates of analysis on their websites; or have a chat with them and they should provide that information for you.

This is a very interesting time for CBD and medical cannabis: theres obviously a lot going on and theres a lot in the news. I think there needs to be more CBD regulation within the industry, because theres a wide range of products on the market that differ in terms of their CBD content and what they purport to have in them; so there needs to be more CBD regulation, theres no doubt about that. Equally [there is a question of] how that CBD regulation is brought in: the industry is playing catch-up in a way because the popularity of the product has grown exponentially in the last few years.

What we need to see is regulation, working with food standards agencies and [other regulators] at a government level. I think that will evolve over the next few months and years; and its going to be [because of] FourFive and other reputable companies that are working with the regulators, to help the industry in a way that protects it and still provides consumers with quality products.

There is no doubt that the CBD regulation will change; and that it needs to protect the industry in terms of protection of products and protect consumers as well. I think its a case of companies and experts working with both agencies and the regulators: the impact on patients is our primary concern; and we are working towards avoiding any impact so there is seamless availability of quality products on the market. That is a goal that everyone is working to at the moment: every country is different and were just going to have to keep working together to make sure that high quality products [are going] to be readily available.

Brexit will potentially free up time and space for this topic to be higher up agendas. I believe that Brexit has possibly moved discussions of CBD and medical cannabis off the table or further down the list [of priorities]. I do think well see more discussions happening in the next few weeks and months as Brexit resolves. At the moment were still working under European guidelines, in terms of the food supplement side at least, but it will be interesting to see how that pans out as we leave Europe; and as with many different areas of Brexit its still a bit of an unknown as to how EFTAs [the European Free Trade Association] regulations and rules will affect the Food Standards Agency on the UK side. There will definitely be more discussion around this, certainly in the groups that Im involved with; and we know that there are greater discussions to be had in the next few months.

Axonics Submits PMA Supplement to U.S. Food & Drug Administration to Expand Full-Body MRI Labeling for 3T Scans – Business Wire

IRVINE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Axonics Modulation Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: AXNX), a medical technology company that has developed and is commercializing novel implantable sacral neuromodulation (SNM) devices for the treatment of urinary and bowel dysfunction, today announced the submission of a premarket approval (PMA) supplement to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) for the purpose of gaining full-body magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) conditional labeling for 3.0T MRI scans.

In September 2019, the FDA approved the Axonics r-SNM System with full-body conditional labeling for 1.5T MR scanners. Axonics has since performed all the required tests to support a PMA supplement for full-body conditional labeling on 3.0T MR scanners for the implantable components of its r-SNM System. The FDA review timeline for labeling expansion PMA supplements is 180 days.

Raymond W. Cohen, Axonics CEO commented, The Axonics r-SNM System is already approved for 1.5T and 3.0T full-body MRI scans in Europe. While only approximately 15% of MRI scanners operating in the U.S. are 3.0T, we believe it was a worthwhile investment to conduct the testing and analyses required for this filing and we are confident our PMA supplement will meet all criteria for FDA approval. This submission further demonstrates Axonics commitment to continuous innovation for the benefit of patients, clinicians and the healthcare system.

About Axonics Modulation Technologies, Inc.

Axonics, based in Irvine, Calif., has developed and is commercializing novel implantable SNM devices for patients with urinary and bowel dysfunction. These conditions are caused by a miscommunication between the bladder and the brain and significantly impacts quality of life. Foods to boost your health while living through the pandemic – Belfast Telegraph

In the coming months, lots of us will be looking at all areas of our life to help protect our own bodies. The overall function of the immune system is to prevent or limit infection. The immune system is good at differentiating between normal healthy cells and unhealthy ones. Infectious microbes release signals that the immune system recognises causing a response to deal with the problem. Infection arises when the bugs get ahead of the immune system. When it comes to nutrition, there are some areas that you could focus on in a bid to better support your immune system.

First and foremost, it's important to eat enough. Calories are needed to feed all systems in the body, including our immune system. On average women need about 2,000 calories a day while men require about 2,500 calories a day. It's important to try and eat enough, which may be challenging if you are sick. If sick and off your food, the 'little and often' approach is advisable as well as eating foods that you feel you can eat. Trust your gut! You may find it helpful to eat dry, plain and cold foods. Additionally, consuming calories through fluids may be easier. However, if you are not sick, it's a good idea to avoid calorie-restricted diets, especially those with large calorie deficits. A healthy diet does support the immune system. Some nutrients are worth focusing on.

Vitamin A is an antioxidant vitamin with many roles including supporting normal immune function. Additionally, vitamin A helps to keep our skin healthy as well as the mucous membranes in our mouth, stomach, intestines, and our respiratory system healthy. As our skin and mucous membranes act as one of the first barriers to infection, it's important that we nourish them. A supplement is often not required. There are two types of vitamin A: vitamin A from animal produce such as meat, dairy and eggs, and vitamin A from plants such as oils, leafy greens and yellow/orange vegetables. Aim to eat these foods often.

Vitamin C is an antioxidant vitamin that plays an important role in immune function. Since the 1930s, vitamin C has been proposed for treating respiratory infections. It became particularly popular in the 1970s when it was suggested to prevent and treat the common cold. Lots of trials have been completed since. A review from 2013 which included 29 trials and over 11,000 people stated that vitamin C supplementation had no effect on the incidence of the common cold in the general public. A review of five trials and nearly 600 participants showed that a vitamin C supplement halved the risk of the common cold in athletes. However, a regular supplement had a modest and consistent effect in reducing the duration of common cold symptoms, with results being higher in children. This is based off results from 31 studies with nearly 10,000 episodes of common cold.

The trials within this review didn't support taking vitamin C once you got a cold as it didn't impact duration or severity. Like all supplements, and despite being a water soluble vitamin, vitamin C is not healthy in large doses. As fruit and vegetables are such great sources, it may be beneficial to focus on eating your seven-a-day instead. For example, requirements are easily met if you eat red peppers.

Vitamin E is another antioxidant vitamin that has a role in supporting immune function. Naturally occurring vitamin E occurs in eight different chemical forms with varying levels of biological activity. Alpha-tocopherol is the one us humans need to focus on. Generally, a supplement isn't needed. Nuts, seeds, and vegetable oils are among the best sources of alpha-tocopherol, as well as green leafy vegetables. For example, sunflower seeds, almonds, hazelnuts and peanut butter are rich sources.

Zinc has an important role in supporting immune function. Although zinc is an essential mineral that is naturally present in our foods, it is also found in many cold lozenges and some over-the-counter drugs.

This is because researchers suggest that zinc could reduce the severity and duration of the common cold by inhibiting rhinovirus in the nasal passage and by suppressing inflammation. Studies have provided conflicting results.

Nevertheless, zinc does appear to help in certain circumstances. Lozengers and zinc-containing syrups may be the preferred choice as they spend more time in the mouth. Oysters are an incredibly rich source of zinc. However, beef, pork, baked beans and pumpkin seeds are everyday foods that will help you meet your zinc requirements.

Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin that is naturally present in few foods. Researchers have suggested that taking Vitamin D supplements may enhance resistance to respiratory infections such as Covid-19, or limit the severity of the illness for those that do become infected.

The opinion of Dr Daniel McCartney and Dr Declan Byrne was published in the Irish Medical Journal last week. They recommended that adults living in this part of the world take 20-50 micrograms of vitamin D per day for the next three to six months as a short-term measure to specifically address the risk of COVID-19. Vitamin D deficiency is common here. Those at greater risk include older people, nursing home residents and hospital in-patients.

This level of supplementation should only be considered as a short-term measure which may potentially help those who are deficient in vitamin D or potentially deficient in vitamin D.

It is advisable that a person should only take this amount of vitamin D under the guidance and supervision of their doctor. The current recommended dose is 200-400 IU. Oily fish and eggs are sources.

Echinacea is widely used to reduce the risk and symptoms of a common cold, despite having limited evidence for it.

A big problem with the studies that have been conducted is that one echinacea product differs quite greatly to the next one. Like other supplements, sometimes other herbs are also added.

A review of the literature was done. However, due to all the differences in supplements being tested, it was difficult to draw any strong conclusions.

Nonetheless, it does seem that some echinacea products may be effective at treating colds. Although, the overall evidence is weak.

There have been a number of studies investigating the impact of particular strains of probiotics on upper respiratory tract infections and the immune system in athletic cohorts ranging from healthy active people to elite athletes.

Unfortunately, it's hard to draw guidelines from these studies, even though the evidence for use is building, as different types of probiotics are used within these studies. Additionally, differences in the effectiveness relate to the type of sport, the training history of the person, and the training load they're undertaking. For the general population, it's important to note that the gut appears to play an important role in immune function.

One of the most important areas to focus on when trying to improve your gut microbiome is to aim for a varied diet with lots of different types of plants. However, it's likely with time that more specific guidance will emerge.

Eating a healthy varied diet is the best way to support your immune system with food. Supplements can sometimes be referred to as the 'sprinkles on the icing of the cake'.

Covid-19 is new so no research has been completed on diet, nutrients and the likeliness of infection, severity of infection or duration of infection. Therefore, nutritional practices for the common cold are simply nutritional practices for the common cold. The most important steps with regards to Covid-19 remain hand hygiene and social distancing.

However, it will certainly do no harm to focus on eating lots of the foods mentioned above, taking your vitamin D supplement to prevent deficiency and eating a variety of plants to support a healthy gut microbiome.

Probiotic Based Dietary Supplements Market Size Analysis, Top Manufacturers, Shares, Growth Opportunities and Forecast to 2026 - Science In Me

Dietary Supplements – National Institute on Aging

Bill is retired and lives alone. Often, hes just not hungry or is too tired to fix a whole meal. Does he need a multivitamin, or should he take one of those dietary supplements he sees in ads everywhere? Bill wonders if they workwill one help keep his joints healthy or another give him more energy? And, are they safe?

Dietary supplements are substances you might use to add nutrients to your diet or to lower your risk of health problems, like osteoporosis or arthritis. Dietary supplements come in the form of pills, capsules, powders, gel tabs, extracts, or liquids. They might contain vitamins, minerals, fiber, amino acids, herbs or other plants, or enzymes. Sometimes, the ingredients in dietary supplements are added to foods, including drinks. A doctors prescription is not needed to buy dietary supplements.

Eating a variety of healthy foods is the best way to get the nutrients you need. However, some people dont get enough vitamins and minerals from their daily diet, and their doctors may recommend a supplement. Dietary supplements may provide nutrients that might be missing from your daily diet.

Talk with your doctor before taking any supplements. Some supplements can change how medicines you may already be taking will work. If your doctor recommends a dietary supplement for you, make sure youre getting the brand recommended by the doctor and that you take it as directed.

Do you wonder if you need a dietary supplement? Maybe you do, but usually not. Ask yourself why you think you might want to take a dietary supplement. Are you concerned about getting enough nutrients? Is a friend, a neighbor, or someone on a commercial suggesting you take one? Some ads for dietary supplements in magazines, online, or on TV seem to promise that these supplements will make you feel better, keep you from getting sick, or even help you live longer. Often, there is little, if any, good scientific research supporting these claims. Supplements may cost a lot, could be harmful, or simply might not be helpful. Talk to your doctor or a registered dietitian for advice.

People over age 50 may need more of some vitamins and minerals than younger adults do. Your doctor or a dietitian can tell you whether you need to change your diet or take a vitamin or mineral supplement to get enough of these:

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2015-2020 recommend how much of each vitamin and mineral men and women of different ages need. Sometimes, too much of a vitamin or mineral can be harmful. Most, if not all, of your daily vitamins and minerals should come from food.

Vitamin B122.4 mcg (micrograms) each day. If you are taking medicine for acid reflux, you might need a different form, which your healthcare provider can give you.

CalciumWomen over age 50 need 1,200 mg (milligrams) each day. Men need 1,000 mg between age 51 and 70 and 1,200 mg after 70, but not more than 2,000 mg a day.

Vitamin D600 IU (International Units) for people age 51 to 70 and 800 IU for those over 70, but not more than 4,000 IU each day.

Vitamin B61.7 mg for men and 1.5 mg for women each day.

When thinking about whether you need more of a vitamin or mineral, think about how much of each nutrient you get from food and drinks, as well as from any supplements you take. Check with a doctor or dietitian to learn whether you need to supplement your diet.

You might hear about antioxidants in the news. These are natural substances in food that might help protect you from some diseases. Here are some common sources of antioxidants that you should be sure to include in your diet:

Right now, research results suggest that large doses of supplements with antioxidants will not prevent chronic diseases such as heart disease or diabetes. In fact, some studies have shown that taking large doses of some antioxidants could be harmful. Again, it is best to check with your doctor before taking a dietary supplement.

Herbal supplements are dietary supplements that come from plants.

A few that you may have heard of are gingko biloba, ginseng, echinacea, and black cohosh. Researchers are looking at using herbal supplements to prevent or treat some health problems. Its too soon to know if herbal supplements are both safe and useful. But, studies of some have not shown benefits.

Scientists are still working to answer this question. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) checks prescription medicines, such as antibiotics or blood pressure medicines, to make sure they are safe and do what they promise. The same is true for over-the-counter drugs like pain and cold medicines.

The FDA does not have authority over dietary supplements in the same way it does prescription medicines. The Federal Government does not regularly test what is in dietary supplements, and companies are not required to share information on the safety of a dietary supplement with the FDA before they sell it. The companies are responsible for making sure the supplement is safe, but the FDA does not evaluate the safety of the product before the supplement is sold. So, just because you see a dietary supplement on a store shelf does not mean it is safe, that it does what the label says it will, or that it contains what the label says it contains.

If the FDA receives reports of possible problems with a supplement, it will issue warnings about products that are clearly unsafe. The FDA may also take these supplements off the market. The Federal Trade Commission looks into reports of ads that might misrepresent what dietary supplements do. A few private groups, such as the U.S. Pharmacopeia, NSF International, ConsumerLab.com, and the Natural Products Association, have their own seals of approval for dietary supplements. To get such a seal, products must be made by following good manufacturing procedures, must contain what is listed on the label, and must not have harmful levels of ingredients that dont belong there, like lead.

If you are thinking about using dietary supplements:

When she turned 60, Pearl decided she wanted to stay healthy and active as long as possible. She was careful about what she ate. She became more physically active. Now she takes a long, brisk walk three or four times a week. In bad weather, she joins the mall walkers at the local shopping mall. On nice days, Pearl works in her garden. When she was younger, Pearl stopped smoking and started using a seatbelt. Shes even learning how to use a computer to find healthy recipes. Last month, she turned 84 and danced at her granddaughters wedding!

Try following Pearls examplestick to a healthy diet, be physically active, keep your mind active, dont smoke, see your doctor regularly, and, in most cases, only use dietary supplements suggested by your doctor or pharmacist.

LAMEA Krill Oil Market (2019 to 2025) – Drivers and Restraints – Yahoo Finance

Dublin, April 02, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The "LAMEA Krill Oil Market, by Application, by Form, by Country, Industry Analysis and Forecast, 2019 - 2025" report has been added to ResearchAndMarkets.com's offering.

The Latin America, Middle East and Africa Krill Oil Market is expected to witness market growth of 12.1% CAGR during the forecast period (2019-2025).

Omega-3 products are essential fatty acid supplements that the human body needs for proper functioning and brain development. Although the amount of omega-3 EPA / DHA used to fortify infant formula is quite lower, it is projected that the market for fortified products will rise at a faster rate. Ongoing research and development in omega-3 fatty acids have become important for the food, pharmaceutical, and feed industries. Currently, the fish-derived omega-3 fatty acid is available commercially.

Certain sources like fungi and algae aren't even as popular in the market. The omega-3 products come from various sources, such as krill oil, fish oil, and algal oil. Fish oil leads the market, both in volume and in value. DHA and EPA, found in omega-3 products, are important for the growth of the infant's brain and the strength of immunity. Nonetheless, there are concerns about consistency and sustainability regarding omega-3 oils derived from fish and krill sources, which challenge the omega-3 fatty acid producers and their products. The consumption of krill oil has to be exactly as prescribed by the doctor, or as indicated on the bottle. It shouldn't be taken in greater quantities or for longer than prescribed. Krill Oil should not be used in patients suffering from an allergy to fish or shrimp, or probably any other form of seafood.

Based on Application, the market is segmented into Dietary Supplements, Functional Food & Beverages, Animal Food & Pet Food, Pharmaceuticals, and Other Krill Oil Application. Based on Form, the market is segmented into Soft gels, Capsules and Liquids. Based on countries, the market is segmented into Brazil, Argentina, UAE, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Nigeria, and Rest of LAMEA.

LAMEA Krill Oil Market (2019 to 2025) - Drivers and Restraints - Yahoo Finance

CRN UK highlights why essential nutrients have never been more essential – NutraIngredients.com

The trade association that represents the UKs food supplement industry identifies vitamins A, B, C and D, essential minerals and trace elements such as iron, copper, zinc and selenium as nutrients that certain groups may lack in their diets, as the unfolding crisis unfolds.

Although messages about the importance of a balanced diet and a healthy active lifestyle underpin nutrition advice to the public, now, more than ever, there is also a need for evidence-based scientific advice about the role food supplements play in the provision of essential nutrients, says professor David Richardson, scientific adviser to CRN UK.

Food supplements have always been part of the strategic dietary advice given to vulnerable groups such as the elderly, women at various life stages, children and adolescents.

Poor nutritional status is associated with impaired immune function in people of all ages, but particularly those over 60 years of age, so improved nutrition and micronutrient supplementation can help enhance immune responses.

The CRNs advice echoes that of the British Dietetic Association (BDA), which also encourage a healthy balanced diet that includes copper, folate, iron, selenium, zinc and vitamins A, B6, B12, C and D in order to support immune function.

The BDA also have words of advice for those having to self-isolate or are unable to go outside, advising those to consider taking a daily supplement containing 10 micrograms (g) of vitamin D.

Also included in the BDAs guidelines are sources of vitamin D rich foods such as oily fish, cod liver oil (unsuitable for pregnant women), infant formula and some yoghurts, which are fortified with vitamin D.

The CRNUK extends this advice adding that such foods play a key role in supporting not only the immune system, but also for physical health and mental wellbeing.

A wealth of evidence links poor mental health and nutritional deficiencieswith a number of health conditions caused byinflammation in the brain, which has possible origins in the gut.

Further researchpoints to food supplements such as zinc, magnesium, omega 3, and vitamins B and D3 as useful in improving peoples mood, relieve anxiety and depression conditions exacerbated by self-isolation and social distancing.

A daily magnesium citrate supplement led to an improvements in depression and anxiety, independent of age, gender or depression severity. Improvement did not continue when the supplement was stopped.

Likewise, omega-3 fatty acidsare central in development and function of the central nervous system. It stands to reason that a deficiency may result in low mood, cognitive decline and poor comprehension.

Such is the unprecedented scale of the situation, the World Health Organization (WHO) have also issued nutritional guidance, adding that good nutrition was crucial particularly in times when the immune system might need to fight back.

Along with limiting salt, sugar and fat intake, the WHO also recommend the consuming enough fibre, which contributes to a healthy digestive system and offers a prolonged feeling of fullness, helping to prevent overeating.

As the mammoth battle against coronavirus continues, with public health and safety measures now in place to slow the spread of the disease, the importance of healthy eating should not be under-estimated, the CRN UK says.

Nutrition plays a key role in supporting the immune system, and a balanced diet is important not only for physical health, but also mental wellbeing.

It is therefore important to be aware of the link between good nutrition, essential micronutrients and good health, and the role multivitamin-mineral supplements can play.

Food Encapsulation Market by Shell Material, Technology, Application, Method, Core Phase and Region – Global Forecast to 2025 – Benzinga

Dublin, April 02, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The "Food Encapsulation Market by Shell Material (Polysaccharides, Emulsifiers, Lipids, Proteins), Technology (Microencapsulation, Nanoencapsulation, Hybrid encapsulation), Application, Method, Core Phase, and Region - Global Forecast to 2025" report has been added to ResearchAndMarkets.com's offering.

The food encapsulation market is estimated to be valued at USD 9.9 billion in 2020 and is projected to grow at a CAGR of 7.5%, recording a value of USD 14.1billion by 2025.

This market is majorly driven by the rising demand for encapsulated flavors from convenience food manufacturers and increasing demand for fortified food products. However, the high cost is the only restraining factor for this market. As per industry experts, the price of any ingredient rises by over 50% when subjected to encapsulation procedures. Also, the capital investment involved in machinery and material cost adds to the final product.

The market for probiotics is projected to record the highest CAGR during the forecast period.

Probiotics help in maintaining vigorous levels of friendly microorganism in the human intestine. Probiotic helps in preventing infection, slowing down the growth of harmful bacteria, prevention of imbalance in the digestive system, avoiding reduction of immunity and ineffective nutritional absorption. Owing to the numerous health benefits offered by prebiotics, they are being extensively used in the food industry in the functional food segment. These probiotics are encapsulated to maintain their character is tics and to protect them from external environmental conditions.

The functional food segment is estimated to account for the largest market share in 2020, in terms of application.

Ingredients such as vitamins, minerals, and probiotics are majorly applied in functional foods. Also, the adoption of encapsulation for vitamins has been the highest, according to industry experts, across the globe. According to industry experts, the adoption rate of food encapsulation has been as high as 40% in the functional food segment for its ingredients. Hence, the segment is estimated to dominate the market in 2020 for food encapsulation, based on application, and is closely followed by dietary supplements, which is the next major application of these ingredients.

Asia Pacific to grow at the highest CAGR in the food encapsulation market between 2020 and 2025.

The North American region dominated the market in 2018, and the Asia Pacific region is projected to be the fastest-growing market during the forecast period in the food encapsulation market. Factors driving the Asia Pacific market growth include the increasing adoption of technological advancements in the region, growing disposable income, and growing demand for functional food and dietary supplements among the urban population. Due to the developing economic conditions across the majority of the countries, consumers in the region prefer the consumption of cheaper products, and hence, mostly opt for non-encapsulated foods. However, cheap labor in these countries helps in the development of a generic range of encapsulated ingredients at competitive pricing, which is further bolstering the market growth in Asia Pacific.

How much more will food stamp recipients get on their SNAP cards? – WWL News, Talk, Sports Radio Station

Louisiana's Department of Children and Family Services loaded extra SNAP money onto most food stamp cards today.

"Many Louisiana households who received Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits in March will see an extra boost on their SNAP cards on March 31," according to a news release.

It follows a waiver from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Here is how much everyone will get:

Take a look at answers to frequently asked questions...

Did Congress pass a bill that includes emergency food aid?

Yes, on March 18, 2020, Congress passed and the President signed into law the Families First Coronavirus Response Act, which includes additional food assistance for some families in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Are we going to have D-SNAP (Disaster SNAP) benefits?

There is no D-SNAP at this time. The federal government is using other options for providing additional food assistance through the recently enacted Families First Coronavirus Response Act (see above). If any additional options become available, we will make announcements on our DCFS website and Facebook page.

What food assistance is available to me?

If you are not a current SNAP recipient, you can apply online for regular SNAP benefits. More information on this can be found at http://www.dcfs.la.gov/getsnap.

Under the federal Families First Coronavirus Response Act, DCFS is also issuing supplemental SNAP benefits to SNAP households who do not already receive the maximum monthly allotment for households of their size. For more information about supplemental SNAP benefits, see below.

Im quarantined and/or staying home as advised by officials. Do I have to go into an office to apply for SNAP or to receive supplemental SNAP benefits?

No, you dont have to come into a DCFS office to apply for SNAP or to receive supplemental SNAP benefits! You can apply for regular SNAP benefits online or by downloading a paper application and then mailing or faxing it to us. For instructions on how to apply for SNAP, visit http://www.dcfs.la.gov/getSNAP or text GETSNAP (no spaces) to 898-211. If a SNAP household is eligible for supplemental SNAP benefits, the benefits will be automatically loaded onto the households EBT cards.

Supplemental SNAP Benefits

What are supplemental SNAP benefits?

Under the federal Families First Coronavirus Response Act, and with authorization from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, DCFS can issue additional benefits to SNAP households to bring them up to the maximum monthly allotment for a household of their size.

By federal law, households already receiving the maximum monthly allotment for their household size cannot receive supplemental SNAP benefits.

How much will I receive in supplemental SNAP benefits?

SNAP households will receive supplemental SNAP benefits in an amount that will bring them up to the maximum monthly allotment for a household of their size.

For example, for a household of 4 people, the maximum monthly allotment is $646. If that household normally receives $400 in monthly SNAP benefits based on their income and expenses, they will now receive an additional $246 to bring their total monthly benefit up to the $646 max for their household size, for each month that supplemental SNAP benefits are issued.

For a list of the maximum monthly SNAP allotments by household size, see the previous question.

When will I receive my supplemental SNAP benefits?

For March, current SNAP households who already received March benefits, and who are not already receiving the maximum monthly allotment for their household size, will receive March supplements on their EBT cards on Tuesday, March 31.

New applicants who applied for benefits in March, but had not been certified as eligible and received March benefits before March 30, will receive their March benefits and supplements in April after being certified eligible. The benefits and supplements will be loaded onto the households EBT cards separately and may be a week apart in time.

For April, current SNAP recipients will receive their regular benefit amount on their regular issuance date (April 1st 14th), followed by their supplements on April 17th.

New applicants will receive their April benefits and supplements on a rolling basis after being certified as eligible. The benefits and supplements will be loaded onto the households EBT cards separately and may be a week apart in time.

Do I have to use my supplemental SNAP benefits right away?

No. SNAP benefits, including supplements, are good for up to 365 days from the date of issuance.

Redeterminations Deadlines

I received a letter telling me to reapply for benefits by April 15, 2020. Is this deadline still in effect?

If you received a letter telling you to reapply for your benefits by April 15, 2020, please know that your case has been temporarily extended and you will NOT receive an interview at this time due to the COVID-19 virus. In the coming months, DCFS will mail you a notice with your new interview date and time.

If you applied for benefits and have not yet been interviewed, please know that you may not have a formal interview. However, your worker may contact you for additional information, which may determine your eligibility for SNAP.

Work Requirements

Have the work requirements for SNAP been suspended due to the coronavirus?

The rule that SNAP recipients who are classified as Able-Bodied Adults Without Dependents (ABAWDs) can receive only three months of SNAP benefits without meeting federal work requirements has been temporarily suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic. (The rule would have gone into effect for 50 non-waived parishes in Louisiana on April 1.)

Mandatory work participation through the LaJET program in Orleans, Caddo, Ouachita, and Rapides parishes has also been suspended.

Supplements you should take in pairs – Vitamins to take together – harpersbazaar.com

Safeguarding our wellbeing has never been so prevalent than the last few weeks as we all scramble to find the holy grail of health amongst the threat of the coronavirus. From guzzling bone broth to dosing on CBD, everything we think we know about immune support has come into play. But if you're one of the 65 per cent of adults who take some form of vitamin supplement, we've got some bad news for your you might be taking them wrong.

As vitamin C sales triple over the last week alone, research has shown that although popping a daily dose can support our body's defences, our ability to absorb the correct amount can vary dramatically from person to person. Our immune system has diverse vitamin needs to work well every day even when we are not sick, says immunologist Dr Jenna Macciochi, ambassador of Tonic Health. Being deficient in vitamins A, B6, B12, C, D, and E, beta carotene, iron and zinc will impair our immunity.

But, by taking certain vitamins in pairs we can boost the nutrient efficiency and reap the benefits of a more harmonious immune system. There are 37 thousand billion things happening every second in our body so the more we do to support them the better, says naturopath Louise Westra. Everything in the body is related so there isnt one nutrient that doesnt need another. Having said that, nutrients work in harmony with one another to perform different functions throughout the body.

If you're guilty of reaching for the fresh orange when you feel the first signs of a sniffle, Westra suggests doubling up on a B6 supplement. Viral infections release histamine in the body and this creates many of the symptoms that accompany a cold or flu-type infection. However, vitamin C and B6 work together to break down histamine, therefore supplementing with vitamin C at 2000mg three times daily has been shown to reduce histamine levels in the blood by just under 40 per cent thereby helping to reduce the severity of symptoms and lessen immune suppression, she says.

Solgar Vitamin C 500 mg with Rose Hips Tablets

Viridian High Six B Complex B6

When a national survey revealed that one in five people have low vitamin D levels in the UK, we all stocked up on the sunshine supplement, but should we have also opted for its lesser known ally? Vitamin A is required for the normal development of our immune function and the epithelial cells found in the linings of the body such as the mouth, gut and respiratory tract, Westra tells us. Whereas vitamin D protects us against viral respiratory infections, therefore the two work well together. Take vitamin D3 and A with a meal that has some fat in it as they are fat soluble vitamins and your body will absorb them better this way.

Healthspan Super Strength Vitamin D3

Known as a healing mineral, zinc's also a champion among immune supplements. Zinc supports the function of the thymus gland (where our immune responses known as T-cells mature) and is needed alongside B6 (especially the active form, pyridoxal-5-phosphate) to keep it working optimally, Westra says. Opt for a zinc acetate lozenge as this supplement form was found to reduce the duration of viral respiratory illness in studies.

Stress and anxiety levels may be at an all-time high but keeping calm is paramount for our health. Any additional stress will undermine our immune system, Westra explains. A combination of magnesium with L-Theanine (an amino acid) will ease the tension in the physical body and settle anxiety as L-Theanine supports the production of calming neurotransmitters. Take this combination now twice daily rather than waiting until you feel tense or anxious.

While devouring kale chips may make a healthy snack, boosting our immunity is going to take more than upping our leafy green intake. Iron is the most common micronutrient deficiency. It's vital for proliferation of immune cells, particularly our lymphocytes taking non-heme iron (found in plant foods) with vitamin C supports its absorption. Eating a piece of vitamin C-rich fruit such as kiwi or orange when taking a non-heme iron supplement can be helpful to improve absorption.

Energy and sleep markets grow more sophisticated by addressing both concerns – Nutritional Outlook

We can all use a boost. Lack of sleep, stress at work, having a social life; it all adds up to create exhaustion that makes us rely on substances like coffee or energy drinks to keep us moving throughout the day. Ironically, those things combined can also add up to a restless nights sleep. As a result, consumers are turning to dietary supplements in the hopes of finding a healthy way to sustain their energy and get a decent nights sleep.

Energy

According to the Council for Responsible Nutritions 2019 Consumer Survey on Dietary Supplements, energy is the second most cited reason that a whopping 32% of supplement users take dietary supplements. What does that look like age-wise? The majority of supplement users (42%) who cite energy support as a reason they take supplements are between the age of 18 and 34, but consumers between the age of 35 and 54 still make up 35% of those who seek out energy products.

According to market researcher Innova Market Insights, food and beverage launches, including supplements, with energy and alertness claims grew 20%, globally, between 2014 and 2018. Sports nutrition is among the top market categories whose food and beverage launches are making energy and alertness claims, representing 38% of the global share of launches in 2018. Not only that, sports nutrition is also among the fastest growing categories, with food and beverage launches of products with energy and alertness claims growing 40% since 2014.

According to market researcher SPINS, during the 52 weeks ending October 6, 2019, energy support was one of the mainstream retail channels three bestselling ingredient categories, earning $803 million. Some of the bestselling energy-support ingredients in that channel overlap with sports nutrition, such as protein and creatine, whose sales grew 61.8% and 11.6% over the previous year, respectively. One of the most prominent sources of energy for the everyday consumer is caffeine. According to SPINS, in the mainstream channel, sales of caffeine grew 14.7% over the previous year, to $109 million.

While energy is important, consumers are also looking for balance. They are drawing distinctions between physical energy and mental energy, and understanding that superficial ideas of energy arent enough to get them through their workday or even a workout. In May of 2019, the World Health Organization classified burnout as an occupational phenomenon. It defined it as a syndrome conceptualized as resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed. It is characterized by three dimensions: 1) feelings of energy depletion or exhaustion, 2) increased mental distance from ones job, or feelings of negativism or cynicism related to ones job, and 3) reduced professional efficacy.1

Concerns about burnout open up the energy category to new ingredients that complement energy ingredients. For example, dietary supplement ingredients classified as nootropics, which are meant to support cognition and focus, can be marketed in sports nutrition to improve workout performance and longevity. Nootropics, such as those found in the NOOstart product from ThinkNOO, are marketed to complement your morning cup of coffee. One of its active ingredients, L-theanine, is known to reduce the side effects associated with caffeine such as the jitters, for example. By taking a capsule 30 minutes prior to ones morning coffee, consumers can expect their bodies to more efficiently process the caffeine they consume, the company says.

[Coffee] is the most consumed beverage after water, says Shannon OBrien, founder and CEO of ThinkNOO. There are these unspoken side effects of coffee that people dont often think about. The jitters, the crash in the afternoon, and what people dont often realize is that coffee does actually have a much slower breakdown cycle for how long it takes to get out of the body, especially if youre topping up multiple times a day with any kind of caffeine. So, what we then looked at was how do you level out that energy throughout the day so people have more sustained healthy energy rather than turning to cup after cup after cup, which led us to a range of different nutrients.

The connection between energy and focus is extending into the gaming space, where e-sport athletes play hours of video games, requiring focus and fast reaction times. Traditionally, energy drinks have been a big part of gaming culture, but ingredients like L-theanine and MCTs (medium-chain triglycerides), which also help the body process caffeine, open the door to healthier options.

Weve been speaking to a bunch of e-sports teams, and theyre really looking into this with scientific rigor, says OBrien. Especially when youre playing reactionary games that require a lot of precision, within 45 minutes of having caffeine, you are actually ineffective, worse than baseline. So, its at about the 45 minutes to an hour mark that you are out of your peak.

Sleep

The flipside of energy is sleep, and what we consume to keep ourselves alert during the day can have consequences for how well we sleep at night. Natural sleep aids provide a potential solution. According to SPINS, during the 52 weeks ending October 6, 2019, in the mainstream retail channel, the sleep category earned $389.8 million, growing 24.3% since the previous year. In the natural category, sleep sales grew 11.2% to $29 million. One of the bestselling ingredients in the category is melatonin, which grew in sales by 10.2% in the natural channel to $11 million, and by 26.4% in the mainstream channel to $322 million.

ThinkNOO keeps the consumers desire for restful sleep in mind with its NOOreset product, which aims to counteract the ill effects of caffeine consumption and to replenish the body of nutrients lost during the day.

The main ingredient we have in there is rutaecarpine, which is a plant extract that has really positive initial research showing it can assist with the production of key enzymes that break down caffeine, explains OBrien. On the flip side of that is that caffeine causes the absorption of a lot of nutrients of which weve looked to target and really replenish so that you get a more restful sleep and end up feeling better.

These products are an example of how the mindset around energy is shifting, taking on a more holistic approach that acknowledges the importance of the mind in our overall physical health.

Italy reveals results of food and drink controls – Food Safety News

Most issues with food and beverages in Italy involved products of animal origin and were microbiological, according to a recent report from authorities.

In 2018, almost 50,500 samples of food products were taken from all stages of the supply chain and nearly 130,000 analyzes conducted as part of official controls. From these analytical checks almost 1,500 had problems, revealing a non-compliance rate of 1.14 percent.

More than 78,000 checks were for microbiological reasons, mostly for Salmonella, followed by Listeria and E. coli, including Shiga-toxin producing E. coli (STEC). Vibrio, Campylobacter, norovirus, Yersinia enterocolitica and Cronobacter sakazakii were also part of tests. Activities were coordinated by the Ministry of Health (Ministero Della Salute).

A total of 1,314 non-conformities were found mostly for E. coli, including STEC, followed by Campylobacter, Listeria and Salmonella.

Types of issues detectedThe highest percentage of irregularities involved microbiological issues in meat, fish and dairy products. The second category for microbiological irregularities was other food products such as composite dishes, including ready meals.

Out of 2,342 checks for allergens, 39 showed non-compliance.

Categories of foods with the greatest non-compliance are meats and derived products, cereals, composite dishes, confectionery products and spices.

Most testing for chemical elements concerned heavy metals with 59 of 21,518 analyzes irregular. For organic contaminants such as dioxins, PCBs, 3-MCPD and others, out of 20,161 analytical tests 29 were not compliant.

Almost 160,000 import consignments were subject to official controls, of which about two-thirds were food of non-animal origin. For this type of food, which concerned 106,116 consignments, 3,781 samples were taken and 214 were rejected. From these samples, 5,204 analyzes were carried out for Salmonella, aflatoxins and pesticides.

Checks on trade in products of animal origin led to 49 items being rejected out of 7,658 controlled lots. Rejections mostly related to bivalve mollusks for norovirus, fishery products for parasites, heavy metals or pathogenic microorganisms and poultry for Salmonella.

NAS and Guardia di Finanza operationsThe 38 NAS Carabinieri units carried out more than 50,000 checks. They found non-conformities in the catering, flour, bread and pasta and dairy product sectors. Investigations led to the arrest of 13 people for crimes including sale of harmful foods dangerous for public health or in poor condition. Almost 24 million kilograms and liters of food and drink was seized.

Local NAS units were also part of a number of operations involving wine, organic foods and fruit and vegetables.

In January 2018, NAS Florence held five people responsible for marketing counterfeit wine by adding water to it with more than 800 bottles seized. One month later, NAS Lecce busted a wine adulteration operation that consisted of adding sugar and other prohibited additives to wine.

In May, NAS Bologna seized 7,000-kilogram of raw materials and food supplements, some of which had expired dates, valued at 200,000 ($220,000). Other items such as vegetables were seized for a lack of traceability information or labeling that misled the consumer on place of origin. In November, NAS Alessandria found an operation in the organic sector using banned plant protection and pesticides.

The Guardia di Finanza, a unit responsible for investigating financial crime and smuggling, also seized more than 1,384 tons of agri-food products and 207,000 liters of liquids in 2018. Confiscated products included partially fermented grapes, wine and sparkling wine, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages and fruit.

One operation involved seizure of 13,812 bottles of prosecco with false origin labels. The load, found inside a truck from Greece and bound for France, had the words Product of Italy on the packaging as well as Wine of Italy and Product of Italy on the bottles. Documentary checks found all transported goods had been produced with grapes grown in Bulgaria.

Another found a large quantity of oil with a false indication of origin in March 2018. The seized cargo consisted of 18,000 packs of sunflower oil, or 22,880 liters, which was produced in Bulgaria but had two Italian flags on labels of the bottles.

High botulism levelsItaly sent 398 notifications via the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed in 2018. Products of Italian origin were involved in 156 alerts and 86 of these were raised by another country. Non-conformities mostly involved animal feed, fruit and vegetables, meat excluding poultry, and cereals. These were mainly due to microbiological contamination, such as Salmonella, Listeria and E. coli, but also allergens and foreign bodies. A total of 209 Italian food recalls were published on the Ministry of Health website in 2018.

Meanwhile, Italy is the European country with the highest number of botulism cases, according to the National Reference Center for Botulism (CNRB).

From 1986 to June 2019, 342 laboratory-confirmed reports of botulism involving 501 people were recorded based on recently released data.

Botulism is a rare but life-threatening condition caused by toxins produced by Clostridium botulinum bacteria. In foodborne botulism, symptoms generally begin 18 to 36 hours after eating a contaminated food. However, they can start as soon as six hours after or up to 10 days later.

It can cause symptoms including general weakness, dizziness, double-vision, trouble with speaking or swallowing, and paralysis of breathing muscles. Difficulty in breathing, weakness of other muscles, abdominal distension and constipation may also occur. People experiencing these problems should seek immediate medical attention.

CBD at the crossroads: a response to the FSA guidelines – Health Europa

As the cannabis market has grown exponentially over the last year, there has been a massive influx of new companies offering a range of CBD infused products including oils, to vape pens, tincture, gummies, chocolates, and wellness products.

As a result of demand and product innovation, the CBD industry is reportedly set to be worth an impressive 1bn by 2025, surpassing sales of popular supplements such as vitamin C and D.

Until now, CBD has been in a period of regulatory uncertainty and the industry faced understandable criticism when high profile cannabis probes found that over half of the most popular CBD oils did not contain the amount of CBD promised on the label.

On 13 February 2020, the Food Standards Agency (FSA) announced a deadline of 31 March 2021 for the submission of a valid application for novel food authorisation for businesses selling food and food supplements containing CBD in the UK. Contained in the announcement, was a warning to all CBD companies that failure to comply may result in products being taken off the shelves. Alongside this warning, the FSA also issued its first ever safety advice to consumers of CBD products.

The UK guidelines, which do not apply to Scotland, come a little more than a year after the European Union added hemp extracts and hemp-derived products containing cannabinoids including CBD to a list known as the Novel Food Catalogue.

As the FSA only overlooks the food and beverage industry, the standards wont be applicable to vapes, cosmetics, or other items not for consumption or those containing controlled drugs such as THC, or products making medicinal claims.

The statement made by the FSA should be seen as an opportunity for those of us looking to work in a compliant industry and this increased regulatory scrutiny will likely see dodgy operators exiting the market, leading to a better product market place and increasing trust from the end user. The move towards better regulation standards is therefore a welcome one.

There is a great need for companies to be more stringent about the contents and overall safety of the cannabidiol products they produce. As steps are taken to protect consumers and ensure the products available are legitimate and safe, the CBD industry will have a space to safely and sustainably grow.

A vital component of moving the industry forward is for consumers to be properly informed about CBD; its different forms, strengths, recommended intake, proven benefits and potential side-effects. In this regard, the FSAs guidelines are a step in the right direction. Yet there are elements to the advice which are simply too restrictive, risking suffocating the market and so come across as anti-business.

For example, the FSA has recommended healthy adults to think carefully before taking CBD and to have a maximum daily intake of 70mg a day. This makes the UK the first country in the world to set recommended limits for CBD consumption. Yet the only evidence of adverse effects from CBD is from extremely high doses. There is no scientific rationale for the 70 mg limit.

Trade associations such as CannaPro and the CTA have done good work in ensuring the quality of the products and trading standards of their members and by recommending a cautious, research-backed maximum daily dose of 200mg for adults.

It is therefore a shame that the FSA hasnt considered wider views of the industry, instead choosing to partner with a relatively new trade association that charges significant membership fees to ultimately benefit larger companies on its books. This ignores some of the great work smaller businesses have achieved in future proofing their business models and creating safe high-quality products.

The FSA needs to work with longstanding trade associations to improve the regulation of CBD products without damaging the market and to update its consumer guidelines based on the huge amount of anecdotal evidence and observational studies currently available.

Due to the huge costs involved in applying for Novel Food status, some companies are at risk. A large number of businesses will now need to enter proceedings to gain retrospective approval, a burdensome, expensive process which involves supplying a large amount of data from rigorous testing.

The FSAs deadline will now force firms to scramble to gather this data in just over a year.

Whilst I am pleased to see the FSA taking interest in the cannabidiol industry, its interventions, in my opinion, have been heavy handed. An improved regulatory system is essential, but this must be implemented with market longevity in mind.

CBD products enable people to benefit from the therapeutic effects of medicinal cannabis legally and without a prescription for some, the results are life changing. Its important we do not disrupt access to these products which are providing multiple benefits for peoples health and wellbeing.

Kissing and coronavirus spread – Daily Monitor

By Dr Vincent Karuhanga

Can I get Covid-19 through kissing? Barenzi

Dear Barenzi,Kissing happens when one puts his/her lips in contact with another persons body part with the commonest kissing in Uganda being mouth to mouth.

Covid-19 is present in the mouth. Therefore, kissing can risk one the infection not only from exchange of saliva but also close proximity which is likely to transfer tiny water droplets containing the virus (droplet infection) to the healthy kisser. The tiny droplets can be expelled when a person coughs, sneezes, laughs, sings or talks and reach another persons mouth, nose or eyes, hence infecting them.

The tiny droplets can reach kissers who will not be at a distance of about six feet or more (social distancing) during kissing.Additionally, the virus can spread by touching surfaces, objects or the body of an infected person where the virus is present and then touching ones nose, mouth or eyes. Touching commonly happens automatically between kissing lovers also risking transmission. Kissing of the backs of hands as a greeting or respect may also risk transmission and should be avoided.

All kissing couples just like any other person require to have maximum personal and general hygiene by washing hands often, not touching their face, disinfecting all surfaces that are touched often by others or themselves, avoiding kissing unnecessarily, social distancing including crowd control and coughing or sneezing into the elbows.

If one has symptoms including cough, difficulty breathing, fever, chest pain and sore throat among others, they should not only avoid kissing but report to their doctor or call the help lines given by the Ministry of Health for help.

What is better at preventing coronavirus? Fruits or supplements with Vitamin C? Shalita

Dear Shalita,Vitamin C has been tried in many viral conditions including common colds and HIV infection with some varying subjective successes.

When one has to choose between natural and artificial food nutrition, fruits are better than food supplements but as a matter of treatment for various conditions where they are helpful, supplements may give a better dose that may have been prescribed.

It may be difficult to know how much nutrition may be contained in a given fruit apart from estimating how much of the required nutritional ingredient that will be absorbed to be utilised by the body.

Coronavirus just like any flu like symptom causing viruses, requires a good immune system which among others is built on consistently taking a balanced diet which includes fruits.

It is, therefore, important for Ugandans to constantly have fruits on their menu starting from infancy.Anyhow one can still consume fruits and take Vitamin C as well because it is never too late to build up immunity including using Vitamin C whatever its source.

Recently a person died in Kanungu and doctors reports indicated he had jiggers that led to tetanus. Is this possible? Enos

Dear Enos,Tetanus or lockjaw is due to an infection caused by tetanus bacteria found in diverse places including soil, saliva, dust and manure. The bacteria enter the body through dirty cuts or openings on the skin. People who get jiggers are mostly dirty and when the jigger fleas burrow into the skin, they create an area vulnerable to many infections including tetanus bacteria. Also the use of unsterilised equipment to remove the jiggers can risk tetanus.

Jiggers themselves do not cause tetanus but make it easy for the sufferer to get infected by tetanus bacteria.

What’s the Difference Between Supplements, Vitamins, and Pharmaceuticals? – One Green Planet

Supplements, multivitamins, and pharmaceutical products arent necessarily controlled stringently by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which means that those milligrams and gram dosages you see may not actually be verifiable. Plus, the fillers, preservatives, and artificial ingredients could potentially be dangerous.

So, what is a responsible consumer to do?

Gain some knowledge, perspective, and ample education on these products. By providing yourself with a foundation to use at will, youll also increase the probability of avoiding dangerous products and ensuring that what youre consuming is accurate, high-quality, and beneficial.

libellule789/Pixabay

When it comes to sussing out the difference between supplements, multivitamins, and pharmaceuticals, the best place to start is with the actual terminology. Not simply understanding the terms themselves, but the wording that generally goes along with each product. Its truly a complicated web of language, but once you know what to look for its really actually simple!

stevepb/Pixabay

The term dietary supplement is exactly what youd think a supplement to your diet that may increase a deficiency or add balance. Alright, if were going super technical, the actual definition ofdietary supplementis a product taken orally that contains one or more ingredients (such as vitamins or amino acids) that are intended to supplement ones diet and are not considered food.

Depending on the type of dietary supplement, they can help you get adequate amounts of essential nutrients if you dont eat a nutritious variety of foods, yet its important to note that supplements cant take the place of the variety of foods that are important to a healthy diet.

Hence that wholesupplementpart of the dietary supplement.

Yes, dietary supplements contain vitamins, but they can also contain minerals, herbs or other botanicals, amino acids, enzymes, and many other ingredients. Dietary supplements also come in a variety of forms, including tablets, capsules, gummies, and powders, as well as drinks and energy bars. Each form requires additional ingredients most gummies require gelatin and most tablets have artificial flavors.

Thatmany other ingredientspart tells you a lot about the fact that dietary supplements can have lots of things you may not necessarily want. This makes it even more important to review the ingredients label thoroughly.Yet, its important to know that dietary supplements are required to come with a supplement facts label which lists the active ingredients, the amount per serving (dose), as well as other ingredients, such as fillers, binders, and flavorings.

All the info is there, you just have to take the time to look!

JerzyGorecki/Pixabay

You may think the termmultivitaminis pretty self-explanatory, but, in reality, its actually not.

Multivitamins also referred to as MVM supplements, as they can be mineral-based contain a combination of vitamins and minerals, and sometimes other ingredients as well. You may also see these referred to as multisandmultiplesor simplyvitamins. Whats even more confusing? Multivitamins are actually a sort of subsection of dietary supplements, so youll also see them calledmultivitamin supplementsand shelved with other dietary supplements.

With that said, while dietary supplements can contain everything from garlic extract to turmeric extract to an herbal-vitamin-mineral-chemical concoction, a multivitamin or mineral supplement generally should stick just to that vitamins and minerals.

Its important to note that multivitamin manufacturers are the ones that choose which vitamins, minerals, and other ingredients, as well as their amounts, to include in their products. With that said, most companies choose to stick to government-mandated recommended amounts, yet not all. Be aware of high doses of certain vitamins which oftentimes come in packs of two or more pills to take each day as well as those that are marketed for special purposes, such as better performance or energy, weight control, or improved immunity, as these products usually contain herbal and other ingredients.

Read the label!

Make sure that the amounts in your multivitamin are close to either the Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDAs), Adequate Intakes (AIs), or the Daily Value (DV), which are government-regulated amounts that have been shown safe for human consumption.

Just because theres more, doesnt necessarily mean its better for you.

Now we get to the big one pharmaceutical.

Per the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Medicine of the Royal Colleges of Physicians of the United Kingdom, you start looking at the termpharmaceuticalby definingpharmaceutical medicine, which is the medical scientific discipline concerned with the discovery, development, evaluation, registration, monitoring and medical aspects of marketing of medicines for the benefit of patients and the health of the community.

Simply put, its the art of selling pharmaceuticals.

Alright, what are pharmaceutical medications? These are chemicals that are designed to prevent, diagnose, treat, or cure a disorder in laymen terms, we simply call them medicines. Keep in mind, there are an immense number and [type] of pharmaceutical drugs, designed to aid almost every type of condition known to medical science.

Yet, returning to the Royal Colleges of Physicians, theres a lot more to a pharmaceutical med then the simple creation and distribution. Theres also clinical testing of medicines, translation of pharmaceutical drug research into new medicines, safety and well-being of research participants in clinical trials, and understanding the safety profile of medicines and their benefit-risk balance.

Its not simply up to you as a consumer, but your physician also has to obtain a thorough understanding of pharmacoeconomics, medical aspects of the marketing of medicines, business administration and the social impact of healthcare on patients and public health, in order to truly prescribe a medication to a patient.

Thats what pharmaceutical reps and pharmaceutical-sponsored conventions are designed around.

Plus, theres a whole onslaught of pharmaceutical physicians doctors that work in the pharmaceutical industry, yet maintain a position or relationship with medical colleges in primary and secondary health care and at universities.

Simply put, theres a lot of hands in the pot of a single pharmaceutical drug from the invention to testing to financing to marketing to selling.

Now that weve got the terminology down, its time to take a closer look at how our government regulates, guides, and advises upon each of these products. This may actually be the most important part of the pie! While the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) cant always guarantee 100 percent safety and efficacy of their systems, their involvement absolutely increases the consumers ability to trust in the quality and ingredients label of the product.

As multivitamins are actually a subcategory of dietary supplements, they both follow the same guidelines.

When it comes to dietary supplements, there are two sides to the coin: guidelines for the manufacturer and guidelines for the consumer.

For the manufacturer, there actually arent that many regulations.

The Food and Drug Administration regulates both finished dietary supplement products and dietary ingredients. With that said, they regulate dietary supplements under a different set of regulations than those covering conventional foods and drug products. This basically means that supplements dont suffer the same severe scrutiny that food and pharmaceutical drugs do.

First and foremost, while manufacturers and distributors of dietary supplements and dietary ingredients are prohibited from marketing products that are adulterated or misbranded. This means that the companies themselves are responsible for evaluating the safety and labeling of their products. Luckily, the companies must ensure they meet all the requirements of DSHEA [Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994] and FDA regulations and the FDA is tasked with taking action against any adulterated or misbranded dietary supplements product after it reaches the market, as long as they catch it.

When it comes to labeling, theres actually a guideline of almost any type of label out there including Liquid Dietary Supplements, Substances added to Foods and Beverages, Ephedrine Alkaloids, Nutrient Content Claims, to name just a few. There are also labeling guidelines when it comes to warning statements, new dietary ingredients, and substantiation for claims, to name just a few more.

For the consumer, theres LOTS of information to know about how these pills are regulated.

While there are a host of FDA guidelines almost too many to remember there are a few that stand out and should be noted. Here are a few:

Basically, a supplement company has full reign to create, promote, and begin selling their product without almost any interference by the FDA. With that said, once the supplement hits the market, dietary supplement firms must report to FDA any serious adverse events that are reported to them by consumers or health care professionals.

So, when it comes to dietary supplements and multivitamins, consumers are the guinea pigs. Thats why its so incredibly important to read the ingredients labels. Most of the regulations that these companies follow have to do with labeling.

On the other hand, when it comes to pharmaceutical medications and drugs, there are too many regulations and guidelines for consumers to even consider.

This is a good thing!

Specifically, the FDA actually has a group designed to watch out for the safety of drugs, called the Consumer Watchdog for Safe and Effective Drugs (CDER). CDER was designed to evaluate new drugs before they can be sold by ensuring that drugs, both brand-name and generic, work correctly and that their health benefits outweigh their known risks.

When CDER uses the word drug, theyre actually referring to a wide range of products including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, generic drugs, and other drug-related products such as fluoride toothpastes, antiperspirants, dandruff shampoos, and sunscreens.

Of course, vitamins and dietary supplements can be sold without prior approval from the FDA and are regulated by the FDAs Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition, and dont fall under CDERs scrutiny.

Before a drug is allowed to be sold, it must pass over a variety of hurdles including an incredibly thorough drug development and review process. Per the Food and Drug Administration and CDER site, the process goes like this:

Drug companies seeking to sell a drug in the United States must first test it. The company then sends CDER the evidence from these tests to prove the drug is safe and effective for its intended use. A team of CDER physicians, statisticians, chemists, pharmacologists, and other scientists reviews the companys data and proposed labeling. If this independent and unbiased review establishes that a drugs health benefits outweigh its known risks, the drug is approved for sale.

With that said, its important to note that CDER doesnt actually test drugs itself, although it does conduct limited research in the areas of drug quality, safety, and effectiveness standards.

As you can see, all three products supplements, multivitamins, and pharmaceuticals have potential dangers to be aware of. Yet, ironically enough, those that are the most highly regulated were talking pharmaceuticals here are actually the most dangerous. This is not only due to the chemical content, but its also about the behind the scenes of these companies, the big money influences, and the possible dramatic damage that can be sustained.

While the government as enforced as strict safety guidelines via CDER as possible, theres a lot of backdoor wheeling and dealing that goes on when it comes to big money companies.

In an article by Science Magazine entitledHidden conflicts? Pharma payments to FDA advisers after drug approvals spark ethical concern, the process and potential ethical issues are laid out.

How does it work?

In order for the FDA to approve a drug, a meeting takes place to vote on the drug involving medical researchers, physicians, and patient advocates. During the meeting, the pharmaceutical company gives a presentation in which medical data and clinical trials are presented. The FDA takes painstaking precautions via a well-established system to identify possible conflicts of interest before such advisory panels meet, given that they either approve or deny a drug based upon these meeting outcomes.

Unfortunately, one example discovered a hole in their process.

When the drug Brilinta hit the market, all seemed great. This multi-billion dollar drug was meant to prevent heart attacks and strokes by limiting blood clotting and it was selling like gangbusters. Yet, the big companies behind the drug AstraZeneca and other firms began to splurge large quantities of money on four physicians that had been part of the advisory group. These payments were supposedly for travel and advice. These are called pay-later conflicts of interest, and they have gone largely unnoticed and entirely unpoliced.

Due to excellent reporting by Science Magazine journalists, they reviewed compensation records from drug companies to physicians who advised FDA on whether to approve 28 psychopharmacologic, arthritis, and cardiac or renal drugs between 2008 and 2014, and found widespread after-the-fact payments or research support to panel members.

This is just one example of many regarding how big pharma has influenced those that stand in their way over the years.

Of course, this doesnt mean we shouldnt be taking pharmaceutical medications. Some of us wouldnt survive without them. All it means is that a little bit of research and digging may be necessary on the consumers part in order to verify that the drug youre taking is a verifiably and ethically produced drug.

What's the Difference Between Supplements, Vitamins, and Pharmaceuticals? - One Green Planet

Intrahousehold management and use of nutritional supplements during the hunger gap in Maradi region, Niger: a qualitative study – BMC Blogs Network

A total of 114 caregivers participated (Table2).

When referring to RUSF and LNS-MQ, most of the participants named the nutritional supplements by a word in Hausa representing its consistency and appearance, they were primarily described as biskit (biscuit) or labou (groundnut paste).

Giving the children biscuits protected them against certain illnesses like diarrhea, vomiting and fever, RUSF/Cash.

We are very happy with the biskit because it protects our children from malnutrition, LNS-MQ/Cash.

When referring to SC+, consistency, appearance, perceived effects on weight gain and overall nutritional status were also considered. Participants described SC+ as gari, which means flour, but also as garin kwamasso, which means flour for malnutrition, or garin boudous, meaning flour that promotes weight gain, or garin taimako, which means aid flour.

During the distribution and prior to returning home, caregivers were invited to participate in an information session on how to use the nutritional supplements and answer any questions. During the interviews, some of the mothers described deviations in the use of the supplement at the household level. For example, some caregivers reported that they mixed the LNS-MQ into food or drink to prevent vomiting or with hot milk to increase appetite. Some reported that they did not mix the RUSF, as they were instructed.

I added water and give him like a liquid, he accepted to drink it because I noticed that when he eats this compact paste he had to vomit immediately. LNS-MQ.

I give it to my child as it is, I had never mixed it with something else. RUSF.

Regarding SC+ consumption, most frequently, the mode of preparation consisted of cooking it with water, as presented during the information sessions. However, some participants said that they use it moistened for which they covered the flour with hot water, as for preparing local couscous. Other participants indicated consuming the SC+ in dry form i.e. without any preparation. Some participants explained that they prepared it depending on the childrens preferences and some reported adding other ingredients such as oil, onion, peanut meal, salt, or sugar. A participant indicated:

Thats what I do, I buy some oil, some onion and then peanut meal and I mix it with a little salt. SC+.

Different forms of preparing the nutritional supplements emerged.

Consumption and sharing practices.

Divergences in the way in which nutritional supplements are consumed, emerged as a commonality among participants. However, although differences in how the nutritional supplements were given to children emerged, when referring to LNS-MQ and RUSF, most of the participants explained that they complied with the daily dose of one packet, most administered it between meals, in the morning. However, some participants indicated dividing the daily dose into two or three feedings, particularly for the youngest children who were still breastfeeding. A participant said:

When the distribution started, my child was not yet complementary feeding. When I take the packet I divide it in two, I give one portion in the morning, the rest in the evening; but now that he is weaned, he eats a packet by himself. RUSF.

When exploring how LNS-MQ was used, most of the participants indicated that they gave one spoonful in the morning, one spoonful at noon, one spoonful in the afternoon. However, some participants indicated that their children disliked the product, particularly the first few days after introduction. These participants explained that when children disliked the product, they tried to find ways to make their children like it. Hence, finding ways to increase acceptability were the main drivers to find alternative ways to prepare LNS-MQ.

A participant explained:

I mixed it [referring to LNS-MQ] with beans and rice for him at first when I saw that he didnt want to eat it. [ ] but now hes used to it, he eats it without me mixing it into other things. LNS-MQ/Cash.

Most of the participants indicated that color and consistency of prepared SC+ helped them to know if the child would consume it or not. A participant explained,

After preparation, we use it for up to 30 minutes. After this there is a change in color or it may become liquid as water meaning that it then it becomes less concentrated. SC+.

In reference to RUSF, LNS-MQ and SC+ most of the participants reported that when the supplements were introduced to the children for the first time, they were not well accepted, but once they got used to them, they appreciated the products. Referring to SC+, a participant explained:

In the beginning, my child didnt want to eat it. I waited and offered him to try again and again, until he accepted it. Sometimes I buy little cakes and promise to give him after he consumes the porridge. SC+.

From the participants perspective, nutritional supplements seem to be shared primarily with siblings in the household, but also with other family members, neighbors and friends.

In some households, where men had more than one wife, it was common for them to share the products with other children and even with all members of the household. A participant explained:

Honestly, all of the members of the household eat it and some spouses, when you refuse to give them any, they express their displeasure [ ] our wish is to tell you to give us a little more or to give us something else other than gari. SC+.

When referring to LNS-MQ a participant explained:

... when they provide you with labou the others expect, hope that you will share it with them, now if you refuse then trouble starts. LNS-MQ/Cash.

Some women also indicated sharing the supplements with close family members who lived in the same compound and/or had many children to feed. However, although sharing was frequently reported, many participants indicated keeping most of the ration for the children for whom the nutritional supplement was indicated. When referring to SC+, a participant explained:

Yes of course his brothers [of the target child] like gari, I give them a little raw gari but not the same amount as the target child and I only do it to get them out of the way because they are big. SC+.

This practice was also found among participants who received LNS. A participant indicated:

I have other children and once I get back to the house, after I have given half a pot to my co-wife, I give half a pot to my own children; I keep the remaining three pots for the target child and that covers about two weeks. LNS-MQ/Cash (During the distribution, the participants received four pots of LNS-MQ per child per month).

RUSF, LNS-MQ and SC+ were shared. Most of the participants indicated that they need to take care of their children and please them equally. Feeding them with nutritional supplements, or any other food, was one way of taking care of children and to please them.

Some participants indicated:

We make certain gestures out of obligation without wanting to when a parent comes to your house to tell you: today my child hasnt even had a bite to eat; and so you are obligated to give them some flour, SC+.

...you put some [referring to SC+] in a quart scoop and you bring it to your mother so she can cook it for your brothers, SC+.

I take two packets that I hide for my daughter and the rest I give to neighbors, in-laws and my parents, SC+/Cash (During the distribution, the participants received four bags of 1.5kg per child per month).

Among some breastfeeding mothers, eating one of the three supplements was perceived to help them to produce more breast milk and was an important motivating factor for consuming the supplements themselves. A breastfeeding mother indicated:

Ive noticed that it increases milk supply [ ] I often mix the gari with oil to eat and it gives me milk, SC+/Cash.

The stock lasts for three weeks because us mothers eat some from time to time to guarantee our milk supply, LNS-MQ/Cash.

Only a few participants indicated that they did not share RUSF or LNS-MQ. The perception that it would not have the expected effects on the children who needed the supplement was the main reason that prevented them from sharing the products. They also indicated that the amount of supplements distributed monthly covered the entire period between two distributions, thus the product was only consumed by the target child. A participant explained:

For me, in principle I tell myself that the complete contents of the packet must be eaten by the child each day, but if I share it with a child that was not targeted I know deep inside that the product will not work because it was not eaten by the intended child only, so thats why I never share it with other children. RUSF/Cash.

Perception of the impact of supplementary foods.

Nutritional supplements were often described to be a special kind of food that improves health, intelligence, physical appearance and protects children from diseases. After using the supplements for 5months, the benefits described from nutritional supplements included childrens weight gain, physical strength, beauty, intelligence and health maintenance.

Independently of the type of nutritional supplement, after participants gave the products to their children for a 5-month period, the children were described as, more healthy, more active, doing well, smoother, brighter, more handsome, more plump, and stronger.

I am happy because giving the gari means that I dont have to shuttle back and forth between my house and the CSI [health center] anymore, he doesnt have diarrhea, he doesnt vomit, he has gained weight and he has become active. SC+/ Food ration.

The nutritional supplements were presented by some participants as a special kind of food, which can provide protection from disease. Other caregivers compared the nutritional supplements to vitamins or even to medicine. When referring to SC+ participants indicated:

Its a food but it is mixed with a strong medicine that makes the child stop being malnourished, SC+.

In my opinion, it [referring to LNS-MQ] is an enriched product that you give to children to protect them from diseases, improve their appetite, and the child gets better quickly. LNS-MQ/Cash.

Furthermore, some mothers who fed their children with RUSF indicated that feeding their children with the biskit give them independence because children become satiated and they asked for food less often. A participant explained:

Really, the biskit, in addition to protecting our children from illness, has become a means of independence for the mothers, because as soon as you offer them a biskit, they eat it right away, they drink some water and go play, thanks to the biscuit there are no more complaints from children clinging to their mothers skirts. RUSF/Cash.

Nutritional supplements are also perceived as an additional financial support to the household. The nutritional supplements were described as a financial impact on households by guaranteeing food for their children. Participants indicated:

...thanks to the gari the womens expenses have been reduced because as soon as the child is full he doesnt demand anything else to eat, SC+.

The financial impact was also described in terms of decreasing expenses for medical costs because children were sick less often. A participant explained:

I can say that husbands are satisfied because they said that thanks to the flour, they dont pay medical costs anymore because the children have stopped being sick all the time. SC+.
