A Dark Past: Should Virginia Pay Those It Robbed of the Right to Bear Children?

Lewis Reynolds, left, was sterilized at what is now known as the Central Virginia Training Center in Madison Heights, Va., when he was a teenager. Sarah Wiley, right, was sterilized at the same facility when she was 23.

'Everybody Wants a Family'

LYNCHBURG, Va. - Sarah Wiley still remembers some details of the medical procedure she had half a century ago: being taken to the operating room on a stretcher, the administration of ether as an anesthetic and a skeleton in the room that potentially served as a reference tool at the Lynchburg Training School and Hospital in Virginia.

But while other aspects of the operation may remain murky, its results have left a lasting impression on her body and mind.

"I was sad, I didn't like it," says Wiley, now 77. "They told me that I could never have kids."

Wiley was one of between 7,000 and 8,300 people sterilized with Virginia's blessing from the early 20th century until about 1980. At least 60,000 people in roughly 30 U.S. states were sterilized during the same time period, the result of a movement that in part aimed to weed out criminal behavior but also encompassed an even more sinister goal.

[OPINION:The U.S. Doesn't Need the U.N. Disability Treaty]

Many of the operations occurred under the umbrella of eugenics, the idea that the human population can be improved through selective reproduction. Those put under the knife to prevent the passing on of potentially harmful hereditary traits often were deemed mentally disabled or "feebleminded" and subsequently, a financial drain on society.

"The change that occurred in this country that allowed sterilization to go on was really less about understanding how the genetics of heredity works and much more about trying to cut down on the number of people who were on welfare who were having babies," says Paul Lombardo, a law professor at Georgia State University who has written extensively on the American eugenics movement.

Now, more than 50 years after Wiley's operation, two Virginia lawmakers from opposite sides of the aisle are pushing a bill that would make the state the second in the U.S. to offer restitution to those sterilized under the authority of state law and a U.S. Supreme Court decision that lent constitutional credence to the practice.

It is essential for Muslims to remember the Nazi’s atrocities and to commemorate their victims

It is now a universally acknowledged fact that the Twentieth Century represents one of the darkest and bloodiest centuries in the history of humanity. The idea of Social Darwinism, the basics of which were put forth in the 19th Century, was the main reason that dragged the 20th Century into such turbulence, dissension, war and conflict. That makes it crucial to grasp the importance of the impacts Social Darwinism had on the world of thought. With the concept of Social Darwinismwhich lacks any scientific foundationmany people who do not live by the morality of religion started to regard cruelty, violence and persecution as natural. The repercussions of that falsified ideology can still be seen in our world today. The persecutorsin their own mindsclaimed that their cruelty had a scientific foundation; that wrongful mindset made the 20th Century rife with killings perpetrated by totalitarian regimes and organizations that oppressed and slaughtered innocent people for the sake of their own ideological obsessions.

Looking at the terrible sufferings and disasters that fascism has inflicted on mankind will enable one to understand the impact of Social Darwinism on the bloodshed and the genocide the world witnessed during the WW II. Adolf Hitler, the ideologist and leader of the Nazi movement, was undisputedly the most dangerous of the racist Social Darwinists. Under his command, the Nazis carried out industrial-scale genocide against Jews, Gypsies, Eastern Europeans, people they considered inferior races. To understand the meaning of the term inferior races and the roots of that so-called scientific misconception, we should look at the underlying philosophy.

A revealing point is the way the Nazi worldview took Darwin's theory of evolution as its intellectual basis. When putting forward his theory, Charles Darwin claimed that there was a constant fight for survival in nature, and that some races were especially favored in the fight, while others were doomed to lose and be eliminated. As one might expect, these views soon came to represent the scientific foundation of racism.

Under the influence of Darwinian views, the Nazis attempted to annihilate people from many different faiths and nations such as Jews, religious Catholics and Slavic people; they slaughtered mental patients, handicapped people and the elderly in gas chambers. The Nazis carried out this persecution in front of the eyes of the whole world; they committed mass murder with the cruelest methods. The Nazis' racial policies, known as eugenics, represented a proactive approach to the theory of evolution as applied to society. Eugenics refers to the weeding out of the sick and handicapped, and the improvement of the human race by increasing the number of healthy individuals. This is not a new idea; the ancient Greek Spartans were well-known for applying a method of eugenics through the practice of infanticide. They would determine that if a baby was born with some manner of physical defect, it would be left to die of exposure; for the ancient Spartans, this represented an attempt to ensure that Spartan children would grow up to become Spartan warriors as adults.

The concepts of freedom of thought and faith, the right of every person to his or her life, the inadmissibility of inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment, the fact that everyone has the right to liberty and security of person and the prohibition of slavery, servitude and forced labor are concepts the whole world now embraces and regards as fundamental rights and freedoms. Today these fundamental rights are under the protection of an international treaty, the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms. However during World War II, every single one of those rights were violated under Nazi rule with the influence of Darwinist indoctrination. The Nazis began by killing their political opponents, then set about murdering all those innocent handicapped and the mentally ill, whom they saw as being harmful according to their twisted theories of eugenics. They began oppressing and torturing Jews and other minorities living in Germany and then, in 1939, launched World War Two in Europe and within two years turned the areas under their control into a killing fields in the name of racial purity. The Nazis killed 11 million people in their terrible concentration and extermination camps, veritable genocide factories where technology was systematically employed to sadistically murder babies, the elderly and the sick. A total of 55 million people died during that war, at least 30 million of them being innocent civilians killed by the Nazis.

With the rule of the Nazis and their openly exterminationist policies, the world became a place of hitherto unseen savagery. Even today, there are still some anti-Semitic actions taken against the inoffensive Jewish community. In order to prevent a similar tragedy from ever happening again, a worldwide collaboration is exceedingly important. A common cultural campaign must be carried out against anti-Semitic groups and the fact that racism and radicalism has inflicted nothing but the most terrible suffering and disasters on mankind must be explained to everyone.

Muslims must be pioneers in the fight against hatred because true believers see other people as beings God created, and make no distinctions between them on grounds of race, nation, skin color or language. In every human being, they see beauty created by God, and take pleasure in that beauty; their faith makes them loving, compassionate and protective. In the Koran, God has forbidden discrimination on the grounds of race and has revealed that people can attain superiority in His sight through faith:

O humanity! We created you from a male and female, and made you into peoples and tribe so that you might come to know each other. The noblest among you in God's sight is the one with the most fear of God. God is All-Knowing, All-Aware. (Koran, 49:13)

All of mankind has a responsibility to ensure that such atrocities never happen again, and that such monstrous ideas are never again allowed to spread: However, Muslims have a special duty to fight against anti-Semitism as they have long been exposed to such poisonous and false teachings in the past century. It is therefore absolutely essential to denounce anti-Semitism, to remember the Nazi's atrocities and to commemorate the victims of this horrific violence.

8News Investigates: Unfit to Breed [Update]

RICHMOND (WRIC) - On a frigid day at the Capitol with icicles forming outside, there's renewed hope of a warming inside the halls of power towards compensating the living victims of Virginia's efforts to create a super race.

"This is something that has to be rectified not just with soothing words but with actions," says Del. Bob Marshall.

It was the actions of the state that robbed now 86-year-old Lewis Reynolds of the ability to have children.

"I only wonder what kind of a father I would have made if I had a family, but I do not have one," Reynolds says.

The retired Marine Corps Sgt. Is one of more than 7,000 Virginians forcibly sterilized between 1924 and 1979 under the Commonwealth's Eugencial Sterilization Act, which was based on the now discredited science of eugenics.

Eugenics had the stated goal of riding society of those considered defective, those whose offspring might burden society - those with "unfit human traits...

Virginia law, declared "insanity, idiocy, imbecility, epilepsy, and crime" could be influenced by heredity and allowed the compulsory sterilization of those confined to state institutions. As a child, Reynolds displayed signs of epilepsy and was sterilized by court order.

"I can't look him in the face and say we're sorry, go away and all things are well,' Marshall says. "They're not all well and that's why we're here today,"

Conservative Republican Bob Marshall and liberal Democrat Patrick Hope typically don't agree on much.

"We stand in front of sundials and dispute the time, but on this we have no difference," Marshall says.

Putin: Gays must ‘leave children alone’ in Sochi

Posted January 17, 2014

Gay rights has been a theme leading up to the Sochi Games because of Russias anti-gay initiatives, including a law on homosexual propaganda that was enacted last year.

Russian president Vladimir Putin said members of the LGBT community will not be subjected to harassment at the Olympics so long as they stay away from children, The Guardianreported on Friday, citing Russian media outlets.

We do not have a ban on non-traditional sexual relationships, Putin said during a meeting with thousands of Olympic volunteers in Sochi. We have a ban on the propaganda of homosexuality and pedophilia. I want to underline this. Propaganda among children. These are absolutely different things a ban on something or a ban on the propaganda of that thing.

SI WIRE: IOC: No We the people on U.S. goalie mask

Putin added that he believes Russia is more liberal on gay rights than many other countries, including the U.S., where he said homosexuality is still punishable by law in some states.

We are not forbidding anything, and nobody is being grabbed off the street, and there is no punishment for such kinds of relations, Putin said. You can feel relaxed and calm [in Russia], but leave children alone please.

The propaganda law may prevent athletes or spectators from displaying rainbow flags or gay rights placards, The Guardian reports.

And while Putin has maintained that nobody will be discriminated against at the Games, he said on Friday that Russia is a traditional country and refuses to accept European values on sexual orientation, according toThe Guardian.

How does UK plan mirror ACA?

BELFAST, Northern Ireland While the Obama administration offers life support to its Affordable Care Act, in the UK a growing number of people are asking whether its time to pull the plug on the National Health Service (NHS), which is in critical condition.

For many years the UK media have carried stories that not only bode ill for the future of government-run health care, but also continue to serve as a code blue warning to the U.S. as to what might be in our future if we decide to go down that road.

Writing in The Daily Telegraph under the headline, Its time to make difficult decisions about the NHS, columnist Judith Woods says, The NHS, dying on its feet for decades, is in a critical state. The promised injection of cash may stabilize it temporarily, but the chances of a full recovery are nil.

She is not alone.

A headline in The Guardian, declares the NHS on the brink of extinction.

While in America there are concerns about an insufficient number of younger people signing up for Obamacare, in the UK among the latest causes for concern is a plan that the Guardian writes ...would only see new drugs licensed for NHS if judged to be a benefit to wider society.

Does this sound like a close relative of eugenics? Let us not talk of death panels, or should we? In the UK, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence decides whether new medicines should be approved. Might it someday also come down to some official deciding who gets treatment and who doesnt? Changing the name of the decision-making entity doesnt alter the intent, or the outcome.

Already, according to the Daily Mail, citing a report by the European Commission (EC), Britain has fewer doctors per person than nearly all other European countries. There are just 2.71 doctors for every 1,000 people. The EC reports the UK ranked 24th out of 27 countries in the EU, behind some of the poorest countries, including Bulgaria, Estonia and Latvia. General practitioners are paid 1,500 pounds (about $2,500) a shift to cover nights and weekends in overburdened ERs. Can one see this crisis looming on Americas horizon as the current supply of doctors proves inadequate to treat a flood of new Obamacare patients?

Whats more, stories about incompetence and corruption within the NHS, once the exception, are now common.

The NHS was supposed to reduce the number of people who seek treatment in emergency rooms. Instead, the BBC reports, some patients visit them as many as four times a week. Citing data from 183 sites obtained under the Freedom of Information Act, BBC News writes, ...nearly 12,000 people made more than 10 visits to the same unit in 2012-13. A small number of those just over 150 attended more than 50 times. The same has proven true for Obamacare. Obama said that coverage would result in fewer ER visits, when in fact studies already show that the newly covered are visiting ERs more frequently.

Eugenics Policies

Future Generations is about humanitarian eugenics. Humanitarian eugenics strives to leave a genuine legacy of love to future generations: good health, high intelligence, and noble character. We advocate measures to improve the innate quality of humankind which are entirely voluntary. Please be forewarned that most ideas expressed on this website are "politically incorrect." We aspire to total honesty, believing that it is the only policy for people with integrity, and furthermore, that in the long run, honesty is far-and-away the most compassionate policy. If we ever hope to solve the problems which face our species, it's imperative that we first look at them objectively, and assess the scientific evidence without bias. If the truth about genetics and behavior, about eugenics, or about race, is considered "taboo," and falsehoods are the only socially acceptable opinions, then this is truly a sad state of affairs, but we won't let it deter us.

The Continuing and Adverse Effects of Roe v. Wade

January 15, 2014|8:29 am

As we approach the 41st anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court decision divining an absolute right to abortion in the U.S. Constitution, we would do well to pause and consider the impact of this monumental ruling and assess what it means for us in the days ahead.

One thing we know for sure: Roehas wrought a lot of dead babies. The United States is the well-established leader for abortion rates in the western world.

To be more precise, statistics reveal legalized abortion has led to the demise of countless unwanted babies. A vast majority of reported abortions in the U.S. are elective. According to information supplied by the Guttmacher Institute, a pro-abortion research group, 92 percent of abortions in America have nothing to do with rape or incest or the health of the mother. Those lives are exterminated as a matter of convenience.

This governmental authorization of abortion on demand is horrifying enough, but unless we begin to appreciate abortion for what it is, the future promises even greater devaluing of life.

Coupled with staggering advancements in DNA research, the "right" to abortion is on the cusp of facilitating full-fledged eugenics. In addition to being elective, abortions are now becoming selective.

Trends show that as many as 90 percent of unborn children diagnosed with Down syndrome are aborted. Obviously, that's not a coincidence. It is the discovery of the extra chromosome that dooms these babies to never live outside the womb.

This all-too-common practice is a blatant violation of human rights.

And detection of Down syndrome is just the tip of the iceberg with available testing. Geneticists boast of over 2000 tests for pegging "genetic disorders." As of today, that vague determination primarily relates to disabling conditions, like Down syndrome or spina bifida; tomorrow, the term could just as easily describe projected height or hair color.

8News Investigates: Unfit to Breed

RICHMOND (WRIC)Virginia lawmakers going into session this week are facing renewed pressure to compensate survivors of the Commonwealth's efforts to create a super race, survivors who were once deemed unfit to reproduce and sterilized against their will.

Marines have a saying: once a Marine, always a marine. Lewis Reynolds served our nation in uniform for 30 years, fighting in both Korea and Vietnam.

"I love my country," Reynolds said. "I fought for it and I'd still fight for it again. I thank the good Lord that [I] served my country, and I thank him for letting me live as long as I have."

But now, the 86-year-old Marine is at the center of a new fightto right a wrong that has forced him to spend his remaining years all alone.

"I see people walking around here with their kids, and sometimes I cry, because I ain't got none," Reynolds said. "People don't understand my feelings."

To begin to understand what happened to Reynolds and thousands of others, it is necessary start in 1924, when the infamous Virginia Eugenical Sterilization Act was passed. It was based on the now-discredited science of eugenics, which had the stated goal of ridding society of those considered defectivethose whose offspring might burden society; those with "unfit human traits."

Virginia Law declared, Insanity, idiocy, imbecility, epilepsy and crime could be influenced by heredity, and allowed the compulsory sterilization of those confined to state institutions.

As a child, Reynolds was mistakenly diagnosed as an epileptic. His medical records describe him as "quiet, friendly and fairly intelligent," but they go on to say, "sterilization is indicated, as it will take a big burden off him in the future."

Reynolds said, "Took my rights away of having a family, and have children and grandchildren where they can watch over me when I got older."

State records show that Virginia sterilized 7,259 people like Lewis Reynolds between 1924 and 1979.
