Labs across the country are now facing what seems like an almost "infinite" demand, one expert says.

"We really do need to improve our turnaround times, primarily in areas and counties of outbreaks," Adm. Brett Giroir, a White House coronavirus task force member, said, as CNN reported.

Diagnostic labs are feeling the effects of the spike in cases, with a leading commercial lab saying testing results can now take up to two weeks for some patients, leaving doctors and patients feeling anxious about their results.

"The average test delay is too long," Dr. Francis Collins, the director of the National Institutes of Health, said Sunday on NBC's Meet the Press, as CNN reported "And that really undercuts the value of the testing, because you do the testing to find out who's carrying the virus and then quickly get them isolated so they don't spread it around."

As USA TODAY noted, labs are performing more COVID-19 tests than ever. Lab workers are strained and states are bidding against one another for the same, limited supplies.

"It's the Wild, Wild West," said Blair Holladay, CEO of American Society for Clinical Pathology, to USA TODAY. "There's been no national testing strategy ... so states are duking it out for supply chains. That's a problem."

Last week, labs reached an all-time high of more than 831,900 COVID tests, according to the COVID Tracking Project. Yet, that expansion in tests has created bottlenecks and slowed results for many Americans.

Quest Diagnostics said in a news release that average turnaround time for non-priority patients was seven days or more, according to USA TODAY. However, patients in hospitals, people preparing for acute surgery, and health care workers with symptoms are able to get results within a day.

"We've gone way backwards" in testing, said former New York health commissioner Nirav Shah, as USA TODAY reported. According to Shah, a senior scholar at Stanford University's Center for Clinical Excellence, the delay in results makes many of the tests irrelevant and increases the virus' spread.

Most patient samples must still be routed through laboratories for processing, and the growing demand is once again straining supplies, equipment, and trained technicians, which all causes shortages and delayed results, according to The New York Times.

"It's very important for people to be able to get the results in time, so they don't continue infecting people," said Pamela Martinez, an expert in disease dynamics at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, to The New York Times. She noted that it's particularly important for asymptomatic people to know if they are carrying the virus. "Maybe if I take a test, but I don't have many symptoms, I'm not going to take the same precautions," she added.

If people have to wait one week or more for their test results, a negative result can give a false sense of security. Diagnostic testing searches for bits of the coronavirus' genetic material. It can only assess a person's health status from the time the sample was taken, and can't account for any subsequent exposures to the virus, of course, as noted by The New York Times.

Since the delays are widespread and people are reluctant to enter a risky situation unnecessarily, people who are not showing any symptoms of coronavirus are less likely to seek a test, which skews the numbers and gives an inaccurate picture of its spread.

In an ideal world, far more community testing would occur to catch some of these more silent cases. "That would give us more of an idea of how this disease is actually playing out," said Olivia Prosper, an infectious disease modeler at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, to The New York Times.

Joining a wider industry shift, Apple announced that it is working to replace exclusionary language in its developer documentation and APIs with alternative terminology.

Renaming things takes time and effort as large parts of infrastructure have to migrate in response. For third-party developers in the App Store, Apple will be changing the names of APIs used in their code where appropriate, which will also necessitate engineering work to migrate.

Examples of exclusionary terminology include using a noun like master to describe the primary code repository. Apples source control features in Xcode, starting with Xcode 12, now names the default branch main by default. Github and other companies announced similar policy changes earlier this year.

Similarly, Apple is replacing the usage of whitelist and blacklist in its documentation with allow list and deny list, to eradicate possible discriminatory connotations. These phrases have long-established technical definitions, but changing to alternative words removes any possibility of confusion or misinterpretation.

As a company, Apple is auditing its frameworks for similar language that warrants adjusting. Developers can expect to see the introduction of renamed APIs in future versions of iOS 14, macOS Big Sur, and the like.

The rise of incubation advisories and their impact on the early-stage startup ecosystem – YourStory

Until a few years ago, unless you were a part of the startup ecosystem, chances are you didnt know what an incubator was. Then came the extremely popular HBO dramedy Silicon Valley. As Erlich Bachman incubated Richard Hendricks Pied Piper to a multi-million dollar valuation, startup incubation became a globally recognised phenomenon.

Today, incubators are a crucial piece in the startup growth puzzle. The number of incubators is considered as a good indicator of how mature a startup ecosystem is.

India, having the third-largest startup ecosystem in the world, has over 500 startup incubators. Even though the country lags behind China (2,400+ incubators) and the US (1,500+ incubators), the vibrant ecosystem of startups has paved the way for the third-largest incubation advisory industry globally, which is gradually gaining popularity.

Incubators, as the name suggests, incubate disruptive ideas with a hope of creating a business model and a company, starting often with even single entrepreneurs. The duration of an incubation programme or advisory is often long one to five years in many cases.

The outcome being chased is an innovation, one that survives and sustains much after the incubation period.

As a startup, you can approach an incubator with just an idea. Incubators help you refine that idea and build an MVP (Minimum Viable Product). An incubator is probably the only institution in the startup ecosystem that comes in at the Pre-Seed or idea stage.

The above is very different from the role and goals of a startup accelerator, which is a more well-known entity due to names such as Y-Combinator, Techstars, etc.

A typical accelerator helps in doing 18-24 months of business building in just a few months, with a clear goal to make the venture VC-funding ready.

There are other entities that are active in the early-stage ecosystem as well. For example, a startup studio helps at both ends of the spectrum (concept to product-market fit) since it also has in-house experts who can help build and market the product.

Angel investors and Pre-Seed/Seed funds often double up as advisors and mentors to the founders during the incubation phase.

Incubators and incubation advisors are experiencing growth in both demand and supply.

Lets look at supply first. Whether its the more established institutional incubators like NASSCOMs 10000 Startups, CIIE IIM-A, and SINE IIT Bombay or growth in the supply of Incubation Advisors (Flexingit has seen an 84 percent growth in consultant registrations during March and April, 2020), incubators are finally coming into their own in India.

Further, exits over the last three-four years, have freed up capital and mentoring capacity. Then, there has also been a rise of corporates and family offices in the startup investment and incubation ecosystem.

On the demand side, other than the lure of the unicorn status, few drivers are at play behind the startups that join an incubator or an incubation programme. These include:

From early days, when the business model of incubators was rent and sales of shared services such as accounting, legal, etc., the rise over the last few years has thus been driven by more value-added offerings on one side and intensity of competition among startups on the other.

Antler, a global early-stage VC, which works more like a structured incubator, recently entered in India with Rajiv Srivatsa, Co-founder of Urban Ladder, at its helm.

In the words of Maria Wlosinska, Co-founder of Unlock, one of Antlers portfolio startups, Antler puts the whole infrastructure in place. Whether its capital, co-founders or mentors. It really helps you to de-risk. That, in a nutshell, could be the value an incubator brings to the table.

Here are a few ways in which, we think, incubators bring value to startups in their portfolio;

This is a hidden factor for success. According to Bill Gross, who started Idealabs more than 20 years ago, the biggest difference between startup success and failure is accounted for, by Timing. An incubator can help in assessing if the timing is right for an idea.

A good incubator goes further. It helps in building and strengthening the mental stamina (and toughness) required to persevere when the timing seems round the corner, but not yet there. This hidden success factor is also essential in preventing founder burnout, which unfortunately is growing rapidly in the community.

Many of us might have heard the phrase Its not what you know, its who you know. Most founders work very hard in building knowledge, but not as hard in building and maintaining Social Capital.

Mark Granovetter, best known for his work on The Strength of Weak ties, has proven that weak connections play a very important role in an individuals accomplishments (e.g. 80 percent of time, people find jobs - and founders their founding teams - through weak connections).

Incubators usually provide the infrastructure shared office spaces, where social capital (professional networks) can be built. Good incubators go beyond that. They impart the knowhow in building and strengthening social capital often an underrated asset, and hence another hidden factor of success!

There are only two kinds of relevant mentors those with startup experience and those with industry experience. Many reputed incubators bring both to the table.

Like Paul Buchheit, the creator of GMail; Brian Chesky, Founder of AirBnB, are mentors at Y Combinator, most good incubators have mentors with a prior startup or deep-industry experience.

Domain specific expertise, some sort of financing or access to third party financing, shared services such as HR, accounting, legal, marketing execution, etc., are some of the other benefits that incubators provide.

The pandemic of COVID-19 is undoubtedly a tragedy of massive proportions, taking a huge toll on human lives and many livelihoods. However, like tragedies and recessions in the past, its also a breeding ground for new problems that require innovation.

Marc Andreessen recently attributed our current state to the inability to build enough. This is a big call to action for startups to innovate and incubators to help them build what can sustain.

It is not easy though. Funding has become tougher, work from home is not easy for all types of problem-areas and the pandemic along with social isolation, has taken a huge toll on the mental health of people.

In these tough times, incubators and incubation advisors are seen to be adopting a different approach to add value to startups. These advisors and institutions see much less financial success than other entities in the value chain but likely derive much more satisfaction from their contribution. And that could also explain the silence behind the blossoming.

Are We Mainstreaming or Simply Trivialising Biodiversity? – The Citizen

Does the global focus on climate change also take biodiversity out of the equation?

Last summer, a hard hitting global assessment of the status of biodiversity and ecosystem services made headlines for its sobering statistics. According to the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), more than one million animal and plant species were being threatened with extinction at levels completely unprecedented in human history.

Not surprisingly humans were the culprit- with changes in land and sea use and direct exploitation of organisms at the forefront, followed by climate change, pollution and invasive species. But for those of us battling to underline the importance of biodiversity to every facet of human life-food security, nutrition, resilient ecosystems, climate proofing of livelihoods and human wellbeing, we knew the global outrage would soon mute to a whimper.

After all, few people seem to understand what biodiversity is, why species potentially matter or its salience in the face of more important development and economic exigencies or even the climate crisis. This despite a global attempt to mainstream biodiversity. The Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) as its first strategic goal aims at mainstreaming biodiversity across government and society.

But over the last decade has biodiversity beenmainstreamed or just sidelined and trivialised, both in common perception, in our policies and on the ground?

The first issue is conceptual and perceptual. Despite attempts in the last few decades to relate biodiversity to the provision of ecosystem services upon which all life depends, and to value nature in monetary terms, the ambiguity and palpable lack of urgency relating to biodiversity continues.

Perhaps this is best described by Peter Raven, a well-known scientist, according to whom, Biodiversity always seems to be a sort of mysterious background thing that isnt quite there. Even today, for many people, biodiversity translates simply as wildlife and conjures up pretty pictures of charismatic tigers and leopards. At the most the role of the tiger is recognised as an apex predator that helps protect swathes of forest given its large home range and need to disperse in search of territories.

With this reductionist view of biodiversity, the loss of a species is considered regrettable, but not necessarily irreplaceable, especially if it is a tiny insect. To put it in perspective, a senior member of a respected environmental institution recently said to me, if oil reserves found under a protected area were to be weighed against tigers, then quite naturally the scales would tip in favour of the oil.

Biodiversity, somehow is a soft issue, dispensable when it comes to more weighty matters of monetising our natural capital. Its loss is nothing that technical solutions, renewable energy, energy efficiency and a circular economy cannot fix.

But biodiversity is not merely wildlife, it is the ecosystem and genetic diversity that sustains them, and us. The CBD defines biological diversity as, the variability among living organisms from all sources including, inter alia, terrestrial, marine and other aquatic ecosystems and the ecological complexes of which they are part; this includes diversity within species, between species and of ecosystems.

Ecosystems such as forests (and all others), are not loose aggregations of independent species but intricate, living, interconnected evolutionary webs where the loss of habitat or decline of any species can potentially trigger cascades of extinction and change.

This can impact the demography and survival of the very trees that comprise a forest, ultimately impacting water flows, carbon sequestration and myriad other services. Enhancing this susceptibility to decline, are interacting forces such as habitat loss, fragmentation, hunting and climate change. Hence, forests and wildlife (and the same applies to all ecosystems) need to viewed as interacting parts of a whole, necessary for each others continued existence and of course for ours.

Does the current global focus on climate change also largely take biodiversity out of the equation? The emphasis is on reducing greenhouse gases and on enhancing carbon sequestration rather than on biodiversity. This shrinks the global finance pie available for biodiversity.

Moreover, rather than natural forests, plantations which play an important role in sequestering carbon become the preeminent strategy as plantation-driven Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) projects in the forestry sector amply illustrate. But plantations support less biodiversity, provide fewer ecosystem services, often focus on fast growing, exotic species, and of course cannot replace a biodiverse natural forest.

The recent emphasis on REDD plus, reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation, was a welcome break as it focused on reducing both deforestation and degradation and also brought back biodiversity conservation and livelihood benefits to the climate equation. However, REDD plus is a largely untested mechanism for forest conservation, adoption rates have been low for various reasons, and the initial results accruing from across the globe are not very positive.

Indias Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) targets an additional carbon sink of 2.5 to 3 billion tonnes of CO2 equivalent through additional forest and tree cover by 2030. Much of this additional tree cover will include planting along highways, railway lines and wastelands. The emphasis on meeting targets through plantations has shifted the focus away from our natural forests, and the biodiversity they harbour. Moreover, if past experience is anything to go by, many designated wastelands diverted to plantation might be important ecosystems in their own right, such as grassland.

In India, forest cover has stabilised although forest degradation continues apace. However, due to the lack of disaggregated information, the status of natural forests remains largely unknown, and it is possible that this stabilisation results from plantations. Several recent measures to enhance forest cover in the country either ignore the role of biodiversity or are operationalized in ways that maintain the conventional afforestation approach, rather than an active restoration one.

The Green India Mission, for example, is biodiversity-friendly and aims to improve the quality of cover of 5 M ha of forest in ways that go beyond plantations. Furthermore it incorporates other ecosystems such as grasslands and wetlands within its ambit. Yet to date, this by now almost moribund mission has followed only conventional afforestation practices.

The Compensatory Afforestation Fund Act, 2016 mandates the use of money received from diversion of forest land towards net present value (NPV) and penal NPV for forest and wildlife protection and management, apart from plantations. Nevertheless, we have lost an opportunity to ensure that some of the funds are dedicated to enhancing the ecological viability of protected areas, many of which function as isolated ecological units in a matrix of other land uses.

This Act could have spelled out that some of these funds be utilised for the regeneration of corridors and other areas with local community support as well as adjoining vulnerable habitats. In August, 2019, more than 47,000 crores of this money was released to the States primarily to achieve the forestry NDC objectives. Consequently, much of these CAMPA funds will again be spent on plantations whose survival in India is abysmal. And biodiversity will continue to decline.

But what of our protected areas (PAs), the last vestiges of wilderness actively dedicated to protecting biodiversity? Ironically, even as the COVID pandemic underlines the interdependence of human lives and biodiversity, and widespread lockdowns have brought the country to a standstill, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has provided a slew of clearances for infrastructure, mining and industrial projects.

These are in some of our last remaining natural forest strongholds, including Indias forested north-east allowing activities ranging from dam construction in the Dibang Wildlife Sanctuary, to oil exploration in Dibru-Saikhowa National Park (where a recent oil well blow out adversely impacted the famed Maguri Motapung beel), to coal mining in Dehing Patakai Elephant reserve. Rather than safeguarding the environment, the mission of the environment ministry now appears to be the promotion of, seamless economic growth.

And while the existing PAs are being whittled down, we are simultaneously identifying other effective area-based conservation measures or OECMs, which are non-Protected Areas that are, governed and managed in ways that achieve positive and sustained long-term outcomes for the in situ conservation of biodiversity...

These could for example encompass community-conserved areas, Important Bird Areas or Reserve Forests which deliver effective conservation outcomes irrespective of the management objective. All this to ensure that in 2020 India meets its national biodiversity target 6 of covering 20% of its geographic area with ecologically representative areas that include both PAs and OECMs.

But if biodiversity is being ignored and trivialised in our already fraught, underfunded and highly fragmented protected areas covering a mere 5% of Indias land cover, do we seriously believe new categories of designations will protect our biodiversity lying outside them? And this is unfortunate, because in reality much of Indias biodiversity lies outside the PA network-for example more than 80% of elephant habitat lies outside PAs.

With negligible management focus on the forest biodiversity of protected and reserve forests, biodiversity is eroded, and human-wildlife conflicts continue to escalate.

Perhaps the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020 will help alter popular perceptions of humanity being immune to, and cocooned from biodiversity loss and ecosystem destruction. It is precisely the destruction of undervalued wild habitats, and the exploitation of wildlife through trafficking and the wild meat trade, that has brought human beings in close proximity with zoonotic viruses; so much so that 75% of all emerging diseases are zoonotic in origin. With COVID we are paying an exorbitant price for neglecting nature and sidelining biodiversity.

Yet this pandemic also provides us with an opportunity to review our relationship with nature and biodiversity, and to course correct to safeguard our planet as well as human well-being and our economies. It is time to get creative with biodiversity, to adopt a landscape approach to conservation, and to start adopting nature and ecosystem-based solutions to climate change. We need to recognise that protecting biodiversity is very much part of the climate solution, as important as technological quick fixes.

The time has come to leverage current realities to ensure that biodiversity is brought centrestage in our understanding, but also in our policies and laws. This is especially true for India where millions of people are ecosystem dependent. However, if recent trends of widespread forest and wildlife clearances or the contentious Draft EIA notification of 2020 are any yardstick, then all indications in India suggest that biodiversity is unlikely to be mainstreamed, at least in the near term.

Unparalleled inventory of the human gut ecosystem – Health Europa

An international team of scientists has collated all known bacterial genomes from the human gut microbiome into a single large database. Their work, published in Nature Biotechnology, will allow researchers to explore the links between bacterial genes and proteins, and their effects on human health.

This project was led by EMBLs European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) and included collaborators from the Wellcome Sanger Institute, the University of Trento, the Gladstone Institutes, and the US Department of Energy Joint Genome Institute.

Bacteria coat the human body, inside and out. They produce proteins that affect our digestion, our health, and our susceptibility to diseases. They are so prevalent that the body is estimated to contain more cells in its microbiome the bacteria, fungi, and other microbes than it has human cells.

To understand the role that bacterial species play in human biology, scientists usually isolate and culture them in the lab before they sequence their DNA. However, many bacteria thrive in conditions that are not yet reproducible in a laboratory setting.

To obtain information on such species, researchers take another approach: they collect a single sample from the environment in this case, the human gut and sequence the DNA from the whole sample. They then use computational methods to reconstruct the individual genomes of thousands of species from that single sample. This method, called metagenomics, offers a powerful alternative to isolating and sequencing the DNA of individual species.

Last year, three independent teams, including ours, reconstructed thousands of gut microbiome genomes. The big questions were whether these teams had comparable results, and whether we could pool them into a comprehensive inventory, says Rob Finn, Team Leader at EMBL-EBI.

The scientists have now compiled 200,000 genomes and 170 million protein sequences from more than 4600 bacterial species in the human gut. Their new databases, the Unified Human Gastrointestinal Genome collection, and the Unified Gastrointestinal Protein catalogue, reveal the tremendous diversity in our guts and pave the way for further microbiome research.

This immense catalogue is a landmark in microbiome research, and will be an invaluable resource for scientists to start studying and hopefully understanding the role of each bacterial species in the human gut ecosystem, explains Nicola Segata, Principal Investigator at the University of Trento.

The project revealed that more than 70% of the detected bacterial species had never been cultured in the lab their activity in the body remains unknown. The largest group of bacteria that falls into that category is the Comantemales, an order of gut bacteria first described in 2019 in a study led by the Bork Group at EMBL Heidelberg.

It was a real surprise to see how widespread the Comantemales are. This highlights how little we know about the bacteria in our gut, explains Alexandre Almeida, EMBL-EBI/Sanger Postdoctoral Fellow in the Finn Team. We hope our catalogue will help bioinformaticians and microbiologists bridge that knowledge gap in the coming years.

A freely accessible data resource

All the data collected in the Unified Human Gastrointestinal Genome collection and the Unified Human Gastrointestinal Protein catalogue are freely available in MGnify, an EMBL-EBI online resource that allows scientists to analyse their microbial genomic data and make comparisons with existing datasets.

The project already has a number of users in the scientific community. As new datasets emerge from research teams around the world, the catalogue might expand to include the microbiomes of other body parts, like the skin or inside the mouth.

This catalogue provides a very rich source of information for microbiologists and clinicians. However, we will likely discover many more novel bacterial species in under-represented geographical areas like South America, Asia, and Africa. We still dont know much about the variation in bacterial diversity across different human populations, explains Almeida.

Lahontan Cutthroat Trout thrive at Paiute’s Summit Lake in far northern Nevada – Nevada Today

Summit Lake in remote northwest Nevada is home to the only self-sustaining, robust, lake population of Lahontan Cutthroat Trout, North Americas largest freshwater native trout species. Research to understand the reasons why this population continues to thrive, where others have not, will be used to protect the fish and its habitat as well as to apply the knowledge to help restore other Nevada lakes that once had bountiful numbers of the iconic fish that historically reached 60 pounds.

A team of researchers from the University of Nevada, Reno and the Summit Lake Paiute Tribe has been studying the watershed ecosystem and recently authored two papers published in scientific journals describing their findings about the relatively small desert terminal lake.

This project is part of a 9-year collaboration to conserve habitats and promote a healthy ecosystem for the lake. University researchers Sudeep Chandra and Zeb Hogan as well as students from their aquatics ecosystems lab and Global Water Center work with the tribes Natural Resources Department, formerly led by fish biologist William Cowan before he retired from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

An objective to implement holistic management at Summit Lake is to blend science with traditional knowledge to protect and conserve natural ecologic processes, species diversity and tribal cultural practices, Cowan said. The partnership with the Global Water Center, as well as many other researchers, agencies, and organizations has complemented this objective by implementing science-based research and technological advances to investigate the viability of trout in the Summit Lake watershed.

Monitoring data, including climate, hydrology, fish and wildlife population trends and habitat integrity, is used to develop, revise or validate the tribes management plans and regulations. This approach is a stark contrast to when the lake ecosystem and associated resources were at risk of irreversible impacts caused by non-point source pollution, irrigation diversions, livestock grazing, and the unknown affects caused by exporting trout eggs for establishment or supplementation of other populations.

Our team at the University wants to support the efforts initiated by the Summit Lake Tribe," Chandra said. Our goals are to assist them in developing their science-based program to protect Nevada's only strong, self sustaining lake population of Lahontan Cutthroat Trout. We believe that investigations in this robust ecosystem like Summit, where there is little human impact, could improve recovery efforts in other lake systems that are less fortunate and that have lost their trout like the Walker and Tahoe. Surprisingly there are still few comparative investigations of these lake ecosystems and how they could support trout during a time for increasing global changes.

The Lahontan Cutthroat Trout, with its crimson red-orange slash marks on the throat under the jaw and black spots scattered over steel gray to olive green scales, is Nevada's state fish and holds a cultural significance to the Summit Lake Paiute Tribe while providing the tribe with bountiful food and fish resources.

As an important traditional food source, Lahontan Cutthroat Trout composed a large part of Tribal members diets and were the focus of many gatherings held to honor the fish and to learn oral history, traditional practices, and cultural resources from elders of the tribe.

The tribe has exercised their sovereignty to protect, manage and enhance tribal homelands, including the lake ecosystem and associated resources by working with federal agencies and other organizations that enable the tribe to holistically manage and protect the land, water and resources that fish, wildlife and tribal members depend on for survival, Cowan said.

The lake is about one square mile of surface area, has a mean depth of 20 feet with the southern end generally deeper with about 50 feet of depth at the deepest. The lake elevation decreased about 13 feet during the severe drought in the western United States that lasted from 2012 to 2016.

One thing we learned is that the climatically induced drought can change the hydrology, or flow of water and connections of stream to lake, but even with these changes, the trout populations remain relatively stable in the lake, Chandra said. They look for the opportunity to spawn every year and likely wait for better conditions with higher flows for better access to upstream spawning grounds.

So it is critical to support the tribes efforts to protect the watershed and understand how the long term changes in water resources, like the flow of water, will change with pending climate change projections for the Great Basin.

James Simmons, doctoral student with the Ecology, Evolution and Conservation Biology program at the University said the population appears resilient to today's climate disturbances/drought, which is very positive, but should the frequency and severity of drought increase in the future, will the population remain resilient in the face of continued low abundance, survival, spawners and a skewed sex ratio.

I think the key going forward will be for the tribe to try to understand how the long-term flow of water in the watershed will be impacted by the future changing climate in the Great Basin - so that the tribe can formulate a game plan to get ahead of any potential negative repercussions, he said. Like cutthroat populations across the western U.S., this population faces unknown impacts from climate change.

Declining abundance and diverging male and female abundance under changing drought cycles and conditions may have negative long term consequences. The prediction of increased frequency, severity and duration of drought and an increased percentage of rain may decrease abundance, reduce the effective population size and skew the sex ratio at Summit Lake.

The research team found that connections between the upper watershed and the lake are essential for maintaining a healthy population during a drought. During the drought of 2012-2016, Summit Lake had a strong, stable population of naturally reproducing Lahontan Cutthroat Trout. The numbers of trout spawning up Mahogany Creek, one of the lakes only inflow streams, was also relatively stable in number. Some of the trout in the lake migrated all the way to the upper watershed, about eight miles.

Lahontan Cutthroat Trout can live in streams and lakes, Chandra said.The trout that live in lakes need rivers to spawn to keep their populations healthy. The numbers do show with little to no major changes to the watershed by human development, there is still a highly variable amount of spawning from lake to stream.

Adequate stream flow is necessary for spawning and movement to the lake-dwelling component of the population. In rivers where flow is regulated, enough flow must be preserved in the spring to allow lake spawners to come upstream and in the fall to allow juveniles to migrate to the lake.

Healthy habitat and ecological connectivity between habitats, such as no man-made migration barriers and adequate stream flow, should be preserved throughout as much of the watershed as possible (and of course between the stream and the lake) to facilitate movement for both stream- and lake-dwelling fish, and to support a robust overall population, Teresa Campbell, a biologist and staff researcher in the Universitys Global Water Center and lead author of one of the scientific papers, said.

Strong connectivity between healthy stream and lake habitats is crucially important to the long-term survival of the Summit Lake Lahontan Cutthroat Trout because it seems that the exchange of individual fish across habitats contributes to the resilience and vitality of the population as a whole.

The study also found that in drought-prone systems, streams should have adequate pool habitat and cover such as trees and woody debris to provide a refuge area from the drought and cooler temperatures for trout.

During the drought, in the stream, these refuge pools with structure in the form of wood, cobbles, or boulders supported higher densities of stream-dwelling trout, Campbell said. Therefore, this habitat type is an important component of healthy stream habitat for trout.

The lake and surface water on the Reservation are further protected by restricting public access and monitoring resources necessary to sustain endemic species diversity in the area, Cowan said.

The Summit Lake Paiute Tribe Reservation is the most remote Native American reservation in Nevada. Located in the northwest corner of Nevada, the reservation is 50 miles south of the Oregon border and 70 miles east of the California border.

Apple has announced it is going to update the terminology it uses within its developer ecosystem. It updated its style guide as part of this effort to make it more inclusive.

A news update on the developer website said:

At Apple, were working to remove and replace non-inclusive language across our developer ecosystem, including within Xcode, platform APIs, documentation, and open source projects. These changes began on June 22 with the beta software and developer documentation released at WWDC20 moving to terms such as allow list and deny list, and main as the default SCM branch in Xcode 12. An updated Apple Style Guide reflects these and other changes.

Furthermore, it said that Developer APIs with exclusionary terms will be deprecated as we introduce replacements across internal codebases, public APIs, and open source projects, such as WebKit and Swift. The note added that developers were encouraged to closely monitor deprecation warnings across your codebases and to proactively move to the latest APIs available in the platform SDKs.

The updated style guide contains a number of changes. These include Apple TV+ and the instruction to not use the phrase whitelist. Entries for dock adapter and Hold switch have been removed.

Opposite West Mall, on the Western Main Road, a mysterious derelict colonial buildingrumoured to have been a churchstood like a prehistoric dinosaur skeleton peeking out from hectares of bush.

As a child, when adults said bush they always conveyed the idea of something unwanted and to be cut down so the land could be made useful. I suppose we inherited from those who colonised these islands the idea that land domination made you prosperous.

However, for me, the word bush always meant healing, adventure and discovery. I believe I must have once been a wild plant growing in neotropical bush myself.

On a whim I drove over and was greeted by preparations for the new West Parks openingscheduled for 2nd June for an invitation only of 50 guests. Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley was to symbolically turn the sod for the new Diego Martin Regional Complex and the Diego Martin Vehicular Overpass.

Elderly couples walked on the circular paved track, mothers with small children congregated, youngsters jogged solo or in pairs, others strenuously worked out. South-winds distanced the traffic on the Western main road and surrounding urban sprawl ceased to exist; only the salty caressing breeze blew softly while waving at the river glinting to the west.

Like tailgaters at a football game in the United States, car trunks were open and stacked with beverages in coolers, snacks ready to share, and pop up chairs occupied by peoplewith dogs on leashesfaced the wide open green fields in anticipation of a golden sunset to frame mountains that looked to the east while holding hands in the north.

Southern lapwings strolling along the waters edge took wing. Was this the same day, crowds of protesters burned tires, blocked traffic, and shut down the capital?

The protests had been triggered by the death of three men in Movant, due to inexcusable police fire; only to be followed by the gunning down of a pregnant mother of fiveallegedly by the policeduring the protests.

As I considered the disparities that exist all around us, I became distracted by a bouquet of white spider like petals fringed with delicate whiskery protrusions. Could it be Redwhisker clammyweed?

Suddenly, I found that my sandalled feet were on fire. Id never stood in an enraged ants nest before so I couldnt understand what this hot peppery flame was moving up my bare legs until I saw the tiny creatures.

I hobbled, bare footed, in my white daisy dress, out of the recently bulldozed area and threw my sandals, again and again, at the newly pitched walking path, to shake the ants off while doing a frantic fire dance.

A large colony of ants, possibly half a century old, or more, had had their world destroyed by an earth scrapper in preparation for lawn. No wonder they were angry.

I felt properly chastised and began to think about the new West Park from a different angle: A tiny case-study of what has been done by those who colonised this land centuries ago; and, now, we who continue to colonise nature in the 21st century.

Due to Covid-19 we learn how easily nature can decimate humanity, where our food comes from, and how what we do to our forests and wild life has consequences for the global environment. Neglect and lack of foresight can have alarming repercussions.

Those who live on the north-west peninsular have just been given the gift of a marvellous green space to relax and enjoy natures gifts. To do so, twenty five acres of bush had to be destroyed. Many essential, almost invisible creaturesoccupants of this land long before colonisationhave had to endure constant displacement, starvation and death.

I wondered how could we give some of it back?

Worldwide there is an alarming disappearance of butterflies and pollinators. While chatting about this to Wayne Simmons, one of the decorators for the event, he said as a child growing up in the mountains of Diego Martin he loved waking up in the morning to watch the butterflies in his yard.

You hardly see them anymore, he lamented.

This conversation is taking place worldwide: Where have the butterflies gone, the honey bee, the pollinators?

Mass extinction of native, irreplaceable, food plants for pollinators, is being caused by pesticides, herbicides, commercial fertilizers and land clearing. The bush we call weeds, such as Asclepias curassavica, is indispensable to the Queen butterfly (cousin to the northern monarch), as is Paragonia pyramidata to the Morpho butterfly.

Like our complex populations of Asian, African, and the entire hybrid-rainbow of people in between, much of our flora are transplants. We exist in a state of amnesia, as the majority of us have no pre-colonised memory of these islands. What we think of as local botany, and native, was brought in by Great Britain, Spain and France!

Native pollinators pre-existed all botanic immigration. They have not changed their reproductive habits nor have they changed the food their young eat.

Without them we could not grow food. In fact, without pollinators, 80% of trees and plant life worldwide would go extinct.

Sure, butterflies can feed from immigrant flowers; but to procreate the pre-colonial host plant is indispensable to prevent starvation and extinction. Their young cannot eat Ixora leaves because its a native to Madagascarnamed after Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker, a British 19th century botanist who worked for the Royal Botanic Gardens, UK.

Bougainvillea is native to Brazil and named after Louis Antoine de Bougainville, a French admiral and explorer during his voyage of circumnavigation in 1768. Botanists believe that the Hibiscus is a designer flower, whose ancestors were native to India, China, Mauritius, Hawaii, Fiiji, or Madagascar.

Flaming Torch ginger is native to Malaysia, where indigenous people eat its flowers as a garnish or use them in spicy fish broth called Assam laksa. The native ancestor of the anthurium flower from South America did not look like the version we have now, that was hybridized by Samuel Damon in Hawaii 1889 (Damons family had migrated to Hawaii in 1842 from the USA mainland).

It was then imported to other tropical places. Bird of Paradise flower is from South Africa, introduced to Kew Gardens, Britain, 1773. The list of outsiders is long and extends to many of our trees such as mango, coconut, orange and breadfruitall iconic trees to our understanding of self, but not native.

The following day, I went back to West Park hoping to find someone who I could talk to about what was missing from this beautiful space; the native plants that could feed the caterpillars of the missing butterflies.

Why not create on this scrapped canvas a commitment to plant flowers endemic to our island? We could plant them along the walking and running pathways.

In my minds eye, the chain-link fence along Western Main road was already full of Passion caterpillars, munching happily on climbing wild Passiflora vines. The seasonal pond could grow Bacopa monniera, so the White Peacock butterfly larva would have food.

Lavender blooming water hyacinths would be busy with dragon flies and the Scarlet Peacock butterfly, from my childhood, would proliferate in clouds celebrating our national flag of red, black and white.

Perhaps, we could ask our businesses and schools, to pair up with field naturalists, UWI students, interested neighbours, Amerindian botanists and communities.

Different groups could adopt a wildflower bed that would feed our pollinators. They in turn, would help pollinate our local gardens, farms, forests and foster bio-diversity for others, such as birds, vertebrates (lizards, toads, salamanders) and bats, etc.

Not only would our children learn how crucial the wellbeing of the small is to the well being of the big, and vice versa, but those who sponsor a bed can proudly display their names and information about the plants and pollinators.

Our citizens could learn about the place we call home. Additionally, native plants are cost-effective, they are dry weather resistant because it is in their DNA to expect dry season.

The saying you make your bed you lie in it applies to both flower-beds and the eco-systems that depend on them, and the beds of our childrens minds and hearts. By building community and cross-pollinating more privileged with less privileged, elders with youngsters, field naturalists with urban gardeners, architects with botanists, by coming together to create sustainability for all, we build goodwill.

Goodwill is infectious. It heals trauma.

My musings were suddenly interrupted by a man and woman who asked to have a word with me. They identified themselves as police and wanted to know why I was taking photographs on my walk around the periphery.

I explained that I was very excited about how wonderful the new park was and that I wanted to write about it. They requested my name and wrote it down. I asked if I looked dangerous?

They smiled at me, a middle aged woman, in my flowery skirt and sandals. They asked if I had been given permission? I said that I didnt know I needed permission because I had not planned on crashing their event.

Did they want me to leave?

The police referred me to UDECOTT and NIDCO officials who politely, but firmly, made it evident that my presence at the park was undesirableso I left.

But I knew I would return and the truth is, in starting a conversation with myself about our duty to the land I call home,I hope to continue this conversation on a national scale; for when we act as if we are above the laws of nature, like those who make laws and then put themselves above it, we endorse our own demise.

As a nation we need clarity on what it means to become one people with each other and with this lands indigenous biodiversity, to make it a place where hybrids like us can bloomand not at the expense of our environment, and each other, as those who brought us here did.

MUMBAI: It takes just one startup to change the narrative of an ecosystem. Last week, Chandigarh-based PrepLadder became that startup, when the medical entrance test preparation platform was acquired by Facebook-backed educational technology company Unacademy for $50 million in a cash-and-stock deal.

The exit, hailed by founders and investors alike, is indicative of a fledgling startup ecosystem in Chandigarh, which a clutch of homegrown venture capital-backed companies in sectors such as ed-tech, agri-tech, content tech, Software as a Services (SaaS) and consumer goods call home.

The founders of these startups, both native to the city and outsiders, prefer Chandigarhs lifestyle to that of startup hubs like Bengaluru, with its traffic snarls, and Delhi-NCR, with its pollution woes.

According to startup analytics firm Tracxn, there are over 700 active startups in Chandigarh as of July 9 and more than one-third of these were founded in the last four years.
