Zero MDR had a negative impact on payments ecosystem: RBI – Entrackr

The Reserve Bank of India, which had set up a committee to study the use of Quick Response (QR) codes to process contactless transactions, is now placed for public comment. RBI constituted the Committee on December 23, 2019 under the Chairmanship of D.B. Phatak, Professor Emeritus, IIT-Bombay.

As per the report of the committee on the analysis of QR Code published by RBI, the apex banking body has asked for comments and suggestions on the report from all stakeholders and members of public before August 10, 2020.

The committee mainly setup for the adoption of QR Code payments, has discussed various aspects of the digital payment system such as interoperability, scalability, innovation, awareness, privacy and security.

One of the most critical recommendations by RBI was allowing a lower fee instead of zero MDR, which was imposed by the government in December 2019. The government should allow a lower controlled interchange instead of zero MDR on QR code, UPI and RuPay debit card transactions, as well as give tax incentives to merchants who accept electronic transactions and promote incentive schemes to improve popularity of QR code-based transactions, mentioned the report.

The RBI has highlighted that opting for zero MDR by the government had a negative impact on the payment ecosystem that is impacting the survival of payment gateway entities, hampering innovation efforts and resulting in job losses and a slowdown in the expansion of the digital payment infrastructure in India. The impact was maximum for the SME sector, and several jobs are directly or indirectly disappearing as there are no incentives or incomes for deploying QR codes.

Extending his support in favour of MDR, NPCIs MD & CEO Dilip Asbe said that MDR is necessary because it funds the acceptance, servicing and acquiring infrastructure for UPI. We are trying to get MDR back, he said at the Global Fintech Festival 2020.

If the government rethinks its decision over zero MDR then it would be a pivotal decision for the merchants and consumers. As per the RBI data, over 20 million UPI QRs have been deployed in the market and the volume of digital payments using UPI QR are approximately over 250 million on a monthly basis.

Besides the government, RBI has also notified its role in the adoption of QR Code payments where it can provide a clear plan to phase out proprietary, closed-loop QR codes in favour of open, interoperable standards.

DIFC has registered over 100 fintech firms since the end of 2018, it announced in Q3 2019.

Outside the UAE, Riyad Bank in Saudi Arabiarevealed a SAR100m ($26.7m) programme to investin financial technology startups, while Bahrainlaunched its FinTech Bay in a bid to become the Gulfregions centre for fintech, hosting co-working spacesand shared infrastructure for corporate innovationlabs and startups.

Bahrain also offers a regulatory sandbox whichallows fintech firms to experiment with new ideasand solutions.

The Covid-19 pandemic also highlighted its relevance at a time when people have been either unableto or preferring to avoid physical services. Someof the products that have seen the biggest increase in transactions include online banking and cryptocurrencies, according to experts.

It has been a few years since one of the most productive leagues in the state has run....

Tamil Nadu is one of those states in the country which does not have a common football league. In the absence of a league or competition organised by the Tamil Nadu Football Association (TNFA), leagues in cities like Chennai and Madurai hold utmost importance for footballers from the state.

The Chennai Football Association's (CFA) Senior Division is extremely special in that regard because it has been the breeding ground for almost every talent that has come up from the South Indian state.

It has been running for a long time (even before independence) under the stewardship of CFA and is the only properly-organised league in the state.

Forget the past. From the current crop of players, the likes of Dharmaraj Ravanan, Michael Soosairaj, Edwin Vanspaul, Michael Regin and Nandhakumar Sekar are all players who proved their mettle in the CFA Senior Division before getting their chance to gain national prominence.

However, for the last three years, the CFA Senior Division has not been held, dealing a major blow to the dreams and aspirations of countless local players who rely on the competition to impress scouts and get a break in their career.

Regin, an ISL winner with ATK last season, had this to say to Goal in a recent interview - "Chennai league is the first step for many local players. I played both second, first and then played senior division. It gives a lot of exposure to local players. Nobody would have known me If Id not played there.

"I don't understand what is happening but a lot of players are suffering. Everybody cannot play for Chennai City FC and come up. They cannot give a chance to every player. There needs to be the league in the city. It is such an important part for a Tamil Nadu player."

The reason for the discontinuance of the league is a legal spat between CFA and TNFA. The state body took the district body to court in 2018 after opposing the elections held by the CFA that year. Chennai City owner Rohit Ramesh was elected as President but the state body filed a case saying the Secretary E Sugumaran was ineligible to contest the elections.

The legal wrangle has left the CFA without a rudder for more than two years and as a result, the Senior Division league has not run since. Not only did the spat bring the footballing activities in Chennai to a standstill, TNFA reportedly went as far as cutting the electricity connection to the CFA office at one point.

After seeing literally no progress and no intent to foster the sport in the state because of the impasse, Rohit Ramesh even offered to resign from the CFA, only for the Secretary to turn the resignation down.

The spat has permeated all aspects of the footballing administration in the state with TNFA accused of delaying and creating roadblocks for entities and clubs associated with the CFA.

The Madras High Court had to intervene in August 2019, appointing an ad-hoc committee to ensure the CFA Senior Division at least is held in 2020. However, even the court's directive has not produced any results despite efforts to start the registration process in January 2020 by the court-appointed committee.

Rohit Ramesh feels that because he belongs to the opposing camp, as per TNFA, they manufacture difficulties and create unnecesary red tape when it comes documentation and other procedures that involve his I-League club Chennai City FC.

"It (the Senior Division) has not been happening for the last three years. When you got an entity fighting case after case in the court, nothing happens. Then there are the ego clashes," he told Goal.

"For instance, when we have to get some certificate for our licensing procedure, it has been tough because they know that we are from CFA and they try to delay it. They bring politics into it. You supported this or that (against us) and why should we help you. Its not working out."

In fact, Goal was privy to a recent telephonic conversation between a Chennai City official andJ. Jesiah Villavarayar, a senior TNFA official. The club official's requests for an affiliation document needed for the club licensing procedure which was initiated by the All India Football Federation (AIFF) was met with a rude 'no'.

The official cited the ongoing lockdown as a reason for his inability to furnish the document. But the polite request for even an e-mail acknowledgement of the fact that TNFA are unable to do so fell on deaf ears as Jesiah asks the club official to take it up with the AIFF.

Under such trying circumstances, Rohit feels it is beyond CFA's ability to hold a league that means so much to the development of football in the city and the state. He feels that only an AIFF intervention can resolve the issue at hand in the near future.

"To be very honest, it is highly unlikely that the league will happen until and unless the AIFF intervenes. If you ask me, they should put an ad-hoc committee to help both associations sort out their differences.Till then, a representative from AIFF should take over the running of the league. That would be the only way the league might restart, if you ask me."

Not every local player can get a chance at Chennai City or Chennaiyin FC - the two clubs from the state playing in the national competitions. The CFA Senior Division is a huge event in the players' calendars and right now, they are being denied that chance by egoistic administrative tussles.

The Indian FA have made some noise recently about handing more responsibility including the organisation of youth leagues to the state associations. In Tamil Nadu's case, the priority for AIFF should be to sort out this issue that is threatening to stall the progress and development of the sport.

And there has been a surge in different payment volumes across online grocery stores, small retail outlets, among others, he said at the virtual event of Global Fintech Fest.

He pointed out that UPI has registered its highest ever transaction volume and value in June 2020, which is more than 100,300 million transactions amounting to over 2.6 lakh crore transactions.

Despite all the disruptions caused by COVID-19, our digital payment system has worked smoothly. And this is what drives our confidence that we are prepared for a post COVID-19 future as we ramp up our ambitions in moving up the fintech value chain, he said.

He mentioned that the Committee of Deepening of Digital Payments have made targets with respect to the growing fintech segment. This includes 10 x increase in per capita digital transactions from FY 2019 to FY 21-22; a 2x increase in digital transaction value as percentage of GDP from 769 per cent in FY19 to 1500 per cent in FY 21-22, and a 3x increase the number of active digital payments user per month from 100 billion to 300 billion.

The future of lending in my mind will be digital. Digital lending will constitute 50% of the total lending by 2023, he said.

It introduces us to Kate Larkin, a scientist who takes part in a secret project to resurrect extinct species that will, in theory, help to re-engineer the planet. Questions of ethics and biological authenticity circulate the project, only to grow more complex when the scientists extend their work to bringing back one of humanity's closest ancient relatives a Neanderthal. After the baby's birth, Kate begins to question the very things that make us human.

Timely and beautifully written, Ghost Species is an elegiac exploration of science and compassion against a backdrop of planetary trauma. In this interview, I asked James what inspired the novel, what he learned about the real-life science of recreating ecosystems, and his feelings about the future.

Amy Brady: Before we discuss Ghost Species specifically I'd like to talk about your writing interests more generally. Your previous novel, Clade, dealt acutely with the climate crisis, and you've written essays about the issue as well. What continues to draw you to the subject of climate change in your writing?

James Bradley: I have a friend who talks about "the knowledge," by which she means that moment when you fully appreciate the scale and urgency of the climate crisis and its implications. I'm not sure I really think it's quite as simple or as singular as that it seems to me most of us continue to resist that understanding in various ways, and to struggle with the complex and often frightening feelings that come with it but I think she's right that once you've got there, nothing is the same. Politics, art, love, relationships: they're all transformed. A lot of my writing over the past decade or so has been trying to think my way into that awareness, and then to try to make sense of what you do with it once you're there.

Amy Brady: Ghost Species explores the questions surrounding the science and ethics of de-extinction. Unlike other novels I've read on the subject, yours feels remarkably plausible. Tell us about your research process and what surprised you the most about what you learned.

James Bradley: I decided quite early on that I didn't want to spend pages and pages discussing the technicalities of the science, partly because I didn't think most readers would be terribly interested in them, partly because I felt they'd detract from the emotional questions that seemed to me to be at the heart of the book. But interestingly, my route into the idea was actually a bit like the one Davis, the billionaire who finances the project, follows. So I began by reading about rewilding and recreating ecosystems rather than reading about the nuts and bolts of recreating extinct species in the lab. That led me to the story of the ways in which reintroducing wolves to Yellowstone altered the physical structure of the rivers, and that led me to the idea that you might try to slow down the melting of the permafrost by using de-extinct ice age animals to re-engineer the climate in the north, in the way Sergey and Nikita Zemov are in Siberia.

Perhaps because I began thinking about ecosystems and interconnectedness and cycles of energy, when I came to start looking at the actual science of de-extinction I was less focussed on the technicalities than I was on the question of what extinction and by implication de-extinction might mean, not just as a metaphor for all the ways in which environmental crisis is upsetting and unhinging time and temporality, but for the kind of loneliness we all feel in a world where so much is being lost all around us.

Amy Brady: A question at the heart of your new novel is whether an extinct animal or even an extinct human relative, the Neanderthal can be considered "real" once resurrected. Is this a question that scientists are taking seriously? Is it one that you yourself have landed on an answer to?

James Bradley: When an animal or a species disappears from the world it's not just their biological identity that's lost, it's also a way of being in the world, and a whole host of complex entanglements with other species and their environment. That absence is profound and immense, but it also means that even if we do find the means to bring back vanished species, they will lack those connections and meanings. For Eve that disconnection is manifested through a larger sense of separation and loneliness, the feeling she's always an outsider. But what also happens in the book is that both Eve and some of the other recreated species begin to change and adapt to go wild, I suppose and as they do their lives begin to take on new shapes and new meanings, although not necessarily the ones their creators might have expected.

Amy Brady: Your novels emphasize compassion, how humans can find deep wells of love and sympathy and beauty even in times of great distress. So often in public debate climate change is discussed in terms of fear and anger, or on the other side of the spectrum, hope and courage. What roles might love and compassion play in not only climate debate, but perhaps in climate action?

James Bradley: I think it's really difficult to describe the scale or the trauma of last summer's bushfires here in Australia. Dozens of people were killed, thousands of homes were destroyed, and a whole range of animals and plants were pushed to the brink of extinction. But as I wrote at the time, what was really striking wasn't the anger and fear and grief, all of which was real and palpable (and given our government's appalling record on climate, justified), it was the outpouring of generosity and kindness. Truckies and tradies organized food deliveries, other people set up websites to find people who'd lost their homes a place to stay, members of the Muslim and Sikh communities took food to the firefighters, all of whom were volunteers, and many of whom had been fighting the fires for weeks or even months on end, and people gave millions of dollars to charities.

That didn't come out of nowhere. People did it because they saw people were suffering, and they wanted to help. That recognition other people's suffering is real is incredibly important, because once we do that it's much harder to look away, or to treat other people's lives as expendable.

Amy Brady: Speaking of love, I loved your protagonist Kate Larkin. Where did she come from? Is she inspired by anyone in real life?

James Bradley: I think all my writing is pretty personal, but with this book I really wanted to find a way of writing that erased all the barriers between me and the work, so I was writing out of somewhere very intimate, and undefended. I did that because I wanted to find a way of articulating a range of feelings of grief and fear that I usually need to keep under control so I can keep functioning. But it also meant I ended up using a lot of material from my own life in a pretty direct way: certainly the material about parenting and children is drawn from my own experience, and addiction and alcoholism have had a big impact on people very close to me. I suppose that desire to write without distance is also about the context in which I wrote the book. I began it just after my father died, and my mother died just as I was finishing it, and it's very much bookended by those losses, and a recognition of what they both meant to me.

Amy Brady: Climate change is often depicted as a slow-moving phenomenon, but so much has happened since the last time we did an interview together for this column in late 2017 a mere two and a half years ago. North America experienced one of its worst hurricane seasons in history, and Australia suffered one of its worst bushfires in history. And that's just in our respective home countries. I asked you back in 2017 if you were hopeful for the future, and you gave a thoughtful and elegant answer that I will paraphrase as "I'm wary of despair." Have your feelings about what's in store for us changed? Are you still at least cautiously hopeful about what the future might bring?

James Bradley: When I wrote Clade one of the things I wanted the book to do was to push back against the idea the future is set, and make a space for possibility and change. I think over the past few years it's become much harder to hold onto the idea we might avoid the worst of what's coming. Having said that, I still think despair is a cop-out and an indulgence, and that even if the odds of staying under two degrees of warming are now slim, there's a big difference between two degrees and three, or three degrees and four, and which of those we end up with depends on what we do now.

Amy Brady: What's next for you?

James Bradley: It's a really good question! In fact, I've just finished a draft of a new novel, and I'm working on a book of non-fiction about the ocean, but both of them are still a way off. In the meantime, I've got a couple of long essays that should be out in the next few months, and I'm working on a couple of articles and a new novella. So I've got a lot of things on the boil, which is always nice.

Broadcast operations and Octagon are in a quarantine bubble

UFCs much-hyped Fight Island officially kicked off last weekend with UFC 251, the first of four events to be held in two weeks at the one-of-a-kind compound created on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi. With a full quarantine bubble in place, UFCs production-operations team worked with NEP to create a broadcast center from scratch inside the Flash Forum, the venue in which the fights are held.

Weve done fights all over the world using all kinds of different [production] facilities, but the unique aspect here is that we were able to build out our back-of-house infrastructure into portable rooms separated by solid walls here at the venue, says Craig Borsari, EVP, operations and Production, UFC. NEP brought in a flypack so we were able to install the equipment across this network of rooms, interface the rooms together, and essentially create a broadcast-operations center right in the venue.

NEP Singapore provided the flypack and additional equipment to create UFCs BOC inside the Flash Forum, which comprises a main control room and separate rooms for tape, graphics, audio, and transmission. The arena is essentially cut in half, with one half housing the Octagon and performance spaces and the other housing the production facilities and warm-up areas for fighters.

With peak temperatures breaking 100F on a daily basis, outdoor production facilities were not an option, and keeping the sizable amount of equipment cool has proved a sizable undertaking.

NEP Singapore provided the flypack for UFCs Fight Island BOC

The biggest technical hurdle has been keeping the equipment in the central engineering room from NEP Singapores flypack at the proper temperature and climate due to the extreme heat and humidity in this part of the world, says Tim OToole, senior VP, event production, UFC. To combat this, we isolate the heat-generating equipment in separate cabins with extra air-conditioning units. We constantly monitor the rooms climate with both a hydrometer and multiple thermostats. The rest of the production workspaces are located in temporary, [ceiling-less] room structures inside the Fight Island venue, where there is ample AC and ventilation.

In addition to the climate-controlled environment, the separate rooms provide a more COVID-safe environment for production teams. In addition to being separated by movable walls, all production staffers are required to wear masks, socially-distance inside the arena space, and regularly disinfect their workstations.

UFC has four manned and two robotic cameras covering the octagon

UFC and production partner Concom have deployed 19 cameras at Fight Island, including 14 Sony HDC-4300s (two operating in 6X slo-mo). Six cameras cover the action in the Octagon: four manned handhelds and two Talon robotic heads from Inertia Unlimited (one above the Octagon mounted on a truss in the lighting grid, one outside the Octagon mounted on a separate truss). The production team is also using one RF Steadicam and a 24-in. Jimmy Jib arm, which plays a key role in fight coverage.

Since we dont have fans inside the arena, says Borsari, we were able to bring the jib into a position that we never have used before. We put the jib in the six oclock position, which would usually be right in the middle of the floor section of seats. That affords us the ability to get very close with the jib-arm camera head and actually cover the fights with it instead of just using it for our walkouts, wide shots, and tale-of-the-tape like we have in the past.

Outside the Octagon, there are two cameras backstage in locker rooms (one becomes the third camera for pre/post shows at the ESPN desk), two for post-show interviews (separate cameras for the reporter and fighter), and two desk cams for ESPN+ pre/post shows.

Inertia Unlimited has also supplied five Marshall CV502 POV cameras. Three are dedicated to on-air talent (so that they can maintain social distancing), and two are attached to BR Remote robotic heads mounted on the apron deck of the Octagon (pointed at fighters coaches to capture their instructions during the fights or their reactions for replay at the end of the fights).

With still no fans in the stands, UFCs production team continues to provide viewers with an unprecedented level of audio access inside the Octagon.

Although the microphone complement remains roughly the same as for a typical UFC PPV production, the audio-production team has been able to capture nearly pristine sounds of body and head blows, fighters hitting the mat, interactions in fighters corners, and even dialogue between fighters.

Weve been extremely happy with the audio-production group, says Borsari. And I think our fanbase has been pleasantly surprised with just how much it enhances the experience of watching our fights. Theres no doubt that, with UFC 251, you were hearing things that you just never would hear typically during a fight of that magnitude. Instead of being in a sold-out [arena], we are in a very intimate location where you can hear audio that gives you a whole different perspective of the power of our athletes.

In terms of on-air talent, UFC and ESPN have a pre/post-show studio desk, and announcers calling the action are positioned about 12 ft. from the edge of the Octagon (10 ft. from each other and separated by plexiglass). As was the case for post-fight interviews at UFC Apex events in Las Vegas last month, instead of standing shoulder to shoulder, the commentator and the winning fighter are in separate locations and conduct the interview via headset and are presented on-screen in a two-box format.

To safely travel the largely U.S.-based production crew of 75+ people, Borsari coordinated with the UFC event-operations team, which arranged for 11 charter flights from Las Vegas, London, Sao Paulo, and Moscow.

Each crew member was required to deliver a negative COVID-19 test 24 hours prior to boarding the charter and then was required to pass another test upon arriving at the hotel in Abu Dhabi (remaining under a 48-hour quarantine while the test was processed). Yet another test is required to be taken within 24 hours of each event.

Once an individual enters the 10-sq.-mile Fight Island quarantine zone where all personnel and fighters are housed and the arena is located they are not permitted to leave, and the perimeter is monitored by a strict security presence at all times. Anyone who leaves the zone must be retested and quarantine for 48 hours before reentering.

The environment that they have created within the quarantine bubble is as safe as it possibly could be, says Borsari. Building the broadcast-operation center inside the arena helped us separate individuals from one another. Our first priority is keeping everyone healthy and safe, and we feel like weve done that.

UFC has held several fights in Abu Dhabi in the past. However, establishing reliable transmission for a major PPV event is never an easy task, especially during a pandemic.

With that in mind, OToole and the UFC team worked with PSSI/Strategic Television (with assistance from IMG Studios at Stockley Park in London) to design an ultra-redundant transmission scheme that includes two Ku-band satellite uplink trucks, one Ku-band flyaway antenna system, and one C-band flyaway antenna system at the Flash Forum.

These four systems provide redundant satellite paths with direct line-of-sight to Eutelsat 7B and AsiaSat 5, covering all of UFCs licensed partners in Europe and the Pacific Rim. To maintain diverse pathways, the signals are downlinked at SES in Israel, NEP Connect in the UK, and Telstra Australia for fiberoptic transport to the U.S. via the Telstra Global Media Network (GMN). SES, PSSI International Teleport, and a PSSI Live Mobile Teleport at UFC APEX uplink all feeds to North American licensees. For additional redundancy, an ASI signal has been established via IP contribution between the Fight Island and the PSSI International Teleport via the Nextologies Global IP network.

Given the reportedly massive PPV audience for UFC 251, UFCs four-event Fight Island experiment got off to a rousing start. With two more events in Abu Dhabi over the next two weekends (following UFC 251 and a Fight Night event on July 15), Borsari and his team are looking to maintain the momentum.

Its incredibly rewarding because this is such a unique series of events for us, he says. Theres a certain energy for everybody who is involved in this event: you can truly feel it as youre walking around within the bubble. Were just all very proud to be part of it and proud to be able to provide some live sports content to people all over the world.

Climate change, and species extinction, all seem so distant from our ability to control and yet all these changes begin locally, and what each of us does matters.

Clintons leadership has created a Comprehensive Plan for the development of our community through 2032, in which they state under the heading, Housing Development that Respects the Natural Environment, The City of Clinton has topography that provides physical features including slopes and floodplain. Environmental regulations strive to protect these features as distinct benefits for 'quality of life.' Any housing developments that may be considered must be designed in a manner to preserve and protect natural features and preserve ag land to the extent possible. Also, the city should be committed to preserving the existing character of the estate area through less intensive land development.

Unfortunately in the real world, our governing bodies appear to have few tools to ensure this vision for our future is followed, and those that we do have arent utilized. While a property owner in Clinton has the right to cut any trees they wish on their property, city ordinances require the preservation of trees in new developments unless they require removal for the placement of specific improvements.

When asked what GPS positioning devices or surveyors' assistance was being utilized in conjunction with the tree removal crew to ensure ordinances are adhered to, Clinton City Attorney OConnell interjected that it was not the intent of the ordinance to inhibit the construction of new developments. Whereas the United State Supreme Court regularly debates the intent of the founding framers of our Constitution, the rest of us must adhere to the language of the laws.

The developers of the proposed Riverstone Crossing have decimated the once beautiful and fragile ecosystem at the heart of our city in direct violation of our ordinance. There is a process for the authority to build such a development, including approval of the City Engineer, the City Planning Commission and the City Council prior to such developments being started.

When the developer submitted plans for a new subdivision, he was obligated to follow the Tree Preservation Ordinance and the steps necessary for the authority to begin the development, before work was begun. Despite his protests of being mischaracterized, the apparent blatant, reckless, and obscene disregard for the ordinances of our community, the concern of neighbors, and preservation of what was once a pristine ecosystem, speak for themselves.

The topography of the area isnt conducive to development, and the demographics of our city wont support the successful development of this proposal. Bondholders may well be forced to complete the improvements while the city will be left to address the erosion issues of a failed subdivision. An immediate injunction should be sought to stop the further unauthorized destruction and a moratorium as provided for in Tahoe-Sierra Preservation Council, Inc. v. Tahoe Regional Planning Agency until the communitys vision for development is thoroughly followed and the community reaches a decision.

Capturing The Potential Of The World’s Accelerating Digital Payments Ecosystem – Consumer Protection – Canada – Mondaq News Alerts

Along with many other countries, Canada saw a precipitous spikein the use of and reliance on digital payments in the wake of thepandemic.

And while digital payment technologies were already asignificant focus for businesses in the financial services sectorbefore the crisis, the acceleration of these systems continues toraise unique issues for both consumers and companies.

In this article, we explore this trend and how organizations canadapt their strategies and develop a risk mitigation approach toseize opportunity and stay competitive in the evolving digitalpayments ecosystem.

Consumer behavioural changes triggered by the spread ofCOVID-19, and the resulting shutdown of the physical economy, haveaccelerated pre-existing trends in Canada toward adoption ofdigital payments1. A recent Payments Canadastudy comparing consumer spending habits pre-COVID-19 found that atweek five of the pandemic, 62% of Canadians were using less cash.The study also showed a dramatic increase in the use ofe-transfers, PayPal and contactless payment apps for food deliveryservices such as Uber Eats and Instacart. A total of 42% ofCanadians said they avoided shopping anywhere that did not acceptcontactless payments2.

For business transactions, the shift to widespread use ofdigital payments is here to stay. It is estimated that, as a resultof COVID-19, by 2025, 67% of global transactions (by value) will bedone digitallya significant increase from the 57% previouslyestimated for that time period3.

While digital payment systems benefit both consumers(efficiency, consumer choice) and businesses (market penetration,access to valuable consumer data), they also come with privacy andcybersecurity risks that organizations need to be mindful of asthey refine their digital payment and risk mitigation strategies totake advantage of the ongoing shift toward a cashless society.

The move to online payments has coincided with increasedinstances of data breaches and cyber scams aimed at exploitingconsumer data to perpetuate identity theft and financial fraud.Cyber criminals are taking advantage of the pandemic as a thematiclure or subterfuge for their malicious activities4.

For instance, one notable SMS phishing campaign claimed toprovide applicants for the Canadian Emergency Response Benefit(CERB) with a link where they could access their benefits, but onlyonce they divulged personal financial details5.

Key consumer-related risks associated with digital paymentsinclude:

As they implement products and services within the digitalpayments' lifecycle, businesses must consider their risks andvulnerabilities.

Organizations also need to prepare for upcoming changes in theregulatory landscape such as the federal government's proposedintroduction of open banking in Canada (read our analysis on openbanking reforms here). Failure to comply with one'sregulatory obligations can result in consumer complaints toregulators or independently attract a regulator's attention,which in turn can result in regulatory penalties.

Qubec, as part of its privacy reform, is proposing toimpose monetary administrative penalties of up to $10,000,000, orthe amount corresponding to 2% of the organization's worldwideturnover, for a variety of contraventions, including for failure toreport a breach and processing of personal information incontravention of Qubec's private sector privacyact.

Companies that seeand seizeopportunity in thecurrent crisis to invest in proactive measures and buildrelationships of trust with their customers will fare best in thistime of rapid transformation for the digital paymentsenvironment.

Companies that invest in prevention, detection, monitoring, andongoing response to cyber threats will stand out amidst companiesthat merely try to ride out these changes without investing intheir infrastructure or relationships. This may be the time to mapyour company's data flows, test your organizationalinfrastructure, identify weaknesses that fraudsters could exploit,and triage the plan for improving those systems.

It is also the time to undergo careful diligence on any thirdparties you partner with for payment processing, ensure you havecontractual safeguards so that third parties remain accountable,and confirm that backstop measures such as cyber insurance,alternative data processors, and record keeping systems to addressthe risks associated with consumer payment incidents. It would alsobe timely to review internal cyber and privacy training plans andthe frequency of refresher communications.

The current momentum in the adoption of digital payments offersan opportunity to build on existing relationships with customersand clients through communication and education on privacy andsecurity.

Businesses at the forefront of these changes will build enhancedtrust with their customers and within the wider community, gaininga competitive advantage as they move to implement robust digitalpayment systems in their organizations.

How do we create learning environments that inspire passion and how do we scale them to work in even the largest institutions?

At the Deloitte Center for the Edge we have identified three attributes of people who have a particular form of passion the passion of the explorer which is associated with performance improvement. They have:

This kind of passion is quite rare in todays business world. And yet, our research indicated that more than 50% of workers have at least one of these attribute of passion to build on. Whats more, in our research we found 75 companies that had made changes to the work environment to help accelerate learning. We found that two critical work environment design principles in particular helped employees cultivate passion: creating systems for experimentation and supporting connection among workers.

The first way to support passion is to build systems for experimentation that help learners discover their particular domains. In our research we saw this happen through a combination of processes, tools, and management practices that were designed to compress cycle times and reduce the risk of failure. Often this included shared physical and virtual spaces for teams, prototyping and feedback tools, and management support.

The second way to support passion, was in creating connections between workers. Passionate employees are wired to seek out others who can help them meet their goals. In our research, companies that were successfully supporting passionate exploration made it easy for those employees to find others with relevant expertise, both within and outside the organization. This helped people solve problems more effectively and support future collaboration. Motley Fool, for example, employs a chief collaboration officer, whose sole job is to encourage active collaboration. Its internal social network helps employees find others with specific areas of expertise; it even recommends connections with people with similar passions, skills, experience, or interests.

Not every company is going to take these steps, but there are two more things managers can do to help employees apply passion at the workgroup level:

First, frame a powerful question. Exclusive focus on day-to-day challenges can lead people to miss larger shifts in the business ecosystem. Developing a sense of purpose coming together to ask and answer a powerful question can help a workgroup move beyond incremental efforts and inspire individual passion. Then, prioritize performance trajectory. Just establishing a desired outcome doesnt put a workgroup on track to reach it and its all too easy to get distracted by incremental gains along the way. Instead, set high-impact performance objectives and track their trajectory, then make tradeoffs to accelerate movement toward shared outcomes. Encouraging long-term thinking outside the executive suite can also inspire workers to raise their aspirations and focus on what matters, deepening long-term commitment
