It's Cyborg … by an eye

Lyman (Cyborg) Good punched his ticket to the finals of this seasons welterweight tournament with a second-round TKO victory over Michail (The Lonely Wolf) Tsarev in the main event of Bellator 78 in Dayton, Ohio, on Friday.

During the second round, Good landed a glancing jab that grazed Tsarevs eye. Tsarev attempted to motion to the ref that he was poked in the eye, but it was to no avail. The fight continued and Good put him away with punches moments later. The instant replay revealed the shot was legal, as Goods fist was closed.

Thats just a testimonial to how hard Ive been working, Good said.

Im going to go out there and represent my team ... Im ready for whoever comes my way.

The former welterweight champion will now meet Andrey (Spartan) Koreshkov in the finals.

Koreshkov earned his spot with a stunning first-round TKO victory over Marius (The Whitemare) Zaromskis in the co-main event.

Koreshkov did a brilliant job of keeping Zaromskis at a distance and beating him to the punch. After dropping the Lithuanian with a sharp left-hook, Koreshkov unloaded with strikes for the win. In a terrible display of refereeing, Jerry Poe took way too long to stop the bout, allowing Zaromskis to receive multiple unanswered punches.

Im very happy; there are so many emotions right now, Koreshkov said through his translator. Im very happy I didnt disappoint anyone.

The winner of Good and Koreshkov will meet the victor of the upcoming welterweight-title fight between Ben Askren and Karl Amoussou.

Daniel Straus earned an impressive submission victory over Brazilian jiu jitsu black belt Alvin (Kid) Robinson.

‘Cyborg Tissue’ Created

Cyborg tissue is becoming more than fiction thanks to research by a team of Harvard and MIT scientists who have engineered nano-sized electrical wire scaffolds that can be placed inside living tissue. Its a technology they hope will become a fundamental part of drug development and aid in replacing damaged tissue in the human body.

Published in Nature Materials earlier this year, the scientists built on an idea of merging biological processes in the brain with nanoelectronics developed by Professor of Chemistry Charles M. Lieber, a pioneer in the field of nanotechnology.

Everything we think about in electronics is built on a chip, so the idea was very simple, Lieber said. But we wanted to use the techniques based on 2-D patterning and somehow make it 3-dimensional and mimic what holds our cells togethera type of synthetic scaffolding.

Ultimately, the researchers believe this technology will be fundamental to the future of drug testing and development. The current drug development process relies on animal testing followed by human trialsa system fraught with ethical and technical issues, said Jia Liu, a graduate student in the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology, who along with Bozhi Tian and Tal Dvir pioneered this research in the Lieber Lab.

Liu said that major challenges in testing drugs for human use include overcoming the differences between human cells and those of other animals as well as harvesting human tissues. Nanotechnology, he said, could provide a way to monitor how drugs react with tissue samples directly in the lab.

With nanoelectronics, the electronics are embedded intrinsically inside the tissue and we apply the drug so that we can directly record it from electronics to see how exactly human tissue reacts to certain drug supplies without damaging it.

According to Lieber, the long-term goal of this research is to implant tissue samples built on nano-electronic scaffolds directly into the human body. In this way, the cyborg tissue can replace damaged tissue and connect to humans neural networks in the same way that cells connect to each other in natural tissue.

Senior author Robert Langer, a Chemical Engineering professor at MIT, said,Not only can we create a tissue but we can actually monitor what happens in that tissue.

We can imagine making a tissue for someone who is ailing and getting diagnostics to tell you how its doing, he added.

These nanoelectronic scaffolds could even be programmed to deliver drugs internally at the same time that they monitor the tissues internal state, according to senior author Daniel S. Kohane, who is a Professor of Anesthesia at Harvard Medical School.

Why Did Kate Gosselin REALLY Get Fired From Coupon Cabin? | Home | Kate Gosselins TLC Earnings Revealed In Controversial New Book

October 17, 2012 10:57 AM by Ryan Haidet

Face Off took a robotic twist this week as the final five aspiring makeup artists worked to create an original cyborg character. To help get them each motivated for the project, the contestants were taken to a junkyard where they gathered various parts to include in their final product. While I didnt think this task would interest me very much since cyborgs arent my thing, I was extremely impressed by some of the finished makeups.

Sarah was a tad weary of the task because of her Mormon upbringing, which sheltered her from seeing a lot of cyborg-style flicks. She has admittedly seen two of the Terminator films, so she clearly isnt oblivious to the concept. While it seemed everybody else started zipping through their creations, Sarah struggled choosing which direction she wanted to go with.

Different Task, Same Worries

As it has become customary, the episode showcased everybody fighting the clock trying their best to avoid cracked molds. No surprises here. When judge Glenn Hetrick stopped by the lab on the second day of the challenge, he offered up advice to each contestant. He liked the concepts and overall designs that Derek, Nicole and Laura had come up with. Meanwhile, he offered up some warnings to Sarah about her lackluster chest piece.

Model Woes

With less than an hour before revealing their finished products, Lauras model suddenly started to feel faint. She asked production to get him some water before he stepped away to go to the restroom. Naturally, Laura was freaking out about it because she still had work to do. He returned a few minutes later saying he was feeling OK.

Is it man, machine or … cake?

I am a cyborg. Please eat me.

Ganesh Khedekar's futuristic cake may not look that appetising but the chocolate creation with skin-like icing won its creator gold in this year's New Zealand Culinary Fare.

Mr Khedekar worked away "bit by bit" on the 45kg cake for 40 hours over three weeks.

The 26-year-old, who works at Browns Bay's Chocolate Earth specialty cake store, won silver last year but topped his result this year by using LED lights and going for the quirky factor.

The cyborg cake was a year in the making in collaboration with his boss Kevin Martin.

It is a "family show", Ganesh says, so the cake could not be "too scary".

The torso is a chocolate shell which can be removed so the cake inside can be eaten and put back together.

Co-worker Felicity Craft, 21, got a bronze for her pure black four-tiered cake with origami birds and a solid egg on top.

Dana White suggests progress being made on Ronda Rousey vs. Cyborg Santos bout

The UFC President told the media at the UFC on FX 5 post-fight presser that he was getting closer to making Rousey vs. Cyborg, potentially the biggest fight in women's mixed martial arts history, a reality.

How close is what could be one of the biggest women's mixed martial arts fights of all-time to being made? According to UFC President Dana White, things are heating up.

White spoke to the media at the UFC on FX 5 post-fight press conference in Minneapolis, Minn. on Friday and when asked about the state of a potential bout between women's Strikeforce bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey and former women's Strikeforce featherweight champion Cyborg Santos, White hinted at his active involvement in trying to make the fight happen. He also suggested progress was being made.

"I think we are," White said with a wry smile Friday answering whether the bout was getting closer to being made. "You've been seeing me hanging around with Ronda a lot. So, I'm working on it."

White declined to give any potential details of the fight, including a timeline, weight class and whether the bout would take place in Strikeforce or the UFC.

Rousey has publicly stated were the bout to happen, it'd need to take place at her weight class, namely, bantamweight or 135 pounds. Santos, by contrast, has suggested she cannot cut to any weight below 145 pounds.

While there's been no public, firm commitment to any formal plan, White has expressed interest in hosting a Rousey bout in the UFC over her normal promotional home of Strikeforce. He's even gone as far as suggesting a potential Rousey vs. Cyborg bout could headline a UFC pay-per-view.

Rousey was in attendance for UFC on FX 5, but did publicly address or speak about any updates on a potential bout with Santos.

Santos, however, is currently unable to fight even if a landmark deal with Rousey and Zuffa were reached. She last competed in December of 2011 at Strikeforce: Melendez vs. Masvidal where she defeated Hiroko Yamanaka by first-round TKO. The bout was subsequently overturned and she was stripped of her Strikeforce title for testing positive for stanozolol. She was fined $2,500 and suspended one year by the California State Athletic Commission.

Cyborg Talks Future, Ronda Rousey and More

As her one year suspension comes to an end, Cris Cyborg Santos, the fallen star of womens MMA, is becoming increasingly vocal about her desires to get back into the cage and face reigning Strikeforce bantamweight champ, Ronda Rousey.

In an interview with Nocaute Transamerica, Santos talked of her desire to fight Rousey:

I also want [the Rousey] fight, Im very pumped. Its gonna be very exciting, all the fans want to see it. I believe it will happen. I think Dana will make everything its possible, cause this is the fight that everybody wants to see.

Santos was the reigning Strikeforce womens featherweight champion until she was stripped of that title in December last year after she tested positive for banned steroid stanozolol.

Until that point, she was the undisputed queen of womens MMA, but during the past year of her suspension, Rouseywith her charismatic media swagger and unbeatable arm-barhas emphatically snatched that crown.

Having cleaned out the bantamweight division, Rousey has turned her attention to Cyborg and has pulled no punches in her trash talk trying to set-up the fight.

In recent interviews she has called the Brazilian Guyborg and Cyroid (H/T Bloody Elbow) and has said that all her accomplishments are illegitimate due to a career of steroid abuse

Rousey has also insisted that the only way shed fight the former champ is if she cuts down to 135 lbs to meet her at her weight class.

If she wants to fight me than she is going to have to find a way to come down to 135, said Rousey back in August.

We'll see how she does in a fair fight for once in her life. She has a history of coming in overweight to fights and I wouldn't doubt that if we agreed to some sort of catchweight at 140, she'd show up at 145 anyway and be like 'ah whatever, fight or not.

Kenji Kamiyama's Full 009 RE:CYBORG Trailer Streamed

Trailer previews plot & voices of Cyborg 002, 003, 004, Dr. Gilmore

The YouTube channel of director Kenji Kamiyama (Eden of the East, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex) began streaming the full-length trailer for Kamiyama's upcoming feature film, 009 RE:CYBORG, on Thursday. The trailer introduces the film's story and highlights the action sequences. It also offers the first preview of the voices of Cyborg 002 (Daisuke Ono), 003 (Chiwa Saito), 004 (Toru Ohkawa) in the film, as well as the first glimpse of the cyborgs' progenitor Dr. Gilmore in the film.

The story begins in 2013 when skycrapers in London, Moscow, Berlin, and New York are destroyed by simultaneous bombings. The indiscriminate terrorism by an unknown group with unknown motives sets off widespread panic throughout the world.

There was once a group of nine cyborg fighters who rescued humanity from threats, but they had disbanded to their home countries. Now the man who created them, Dr. Gilmore, has summoned and assembled them back together again. However, the 00 Number Cyborgs' former leader, a Japanese man named Joe Shimamura (Mamoru Miyano), is now living alone in Tokyo's Roppongi with his past memories erased.

The film, which is Kamiyama's first in full-3D animation, is based on Shotaro Ishinomori's classic science-fiction manga Cyborg 009 that was famously left uncompleted by the creator's passing. In the original manga, the secret Black Ghost organization transforms nine unsuspecting humans into cyborgs. However, the nine cyborgs turn on their masters and protect the rest of humanity from Black Ghost's plans for world war.

The film will open simultaneously in Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, and South Korea on October 27. The Facebook page for PH9 Global, the official account for director Kenji Kamiyama's titles, revealed that an English script for his upcoming 009 Re:Cyborg anime film is in development.

A cockroach could save your life

Researchers from North Carolina State University have turned the cockroach - perhaps the world's most despised insect - into an emergency rescue worker.

The idea is to develop a cyborg cockroach, one that could be remotely controlled.

With a camera on its back, thecockroach could enter and maneuver through tiny crevices, searching for survivors from an earthquake or another disaster.

Search and rescue workers often have difficulty investigating these areas, and this new and improved (though still disgusting) little guy could be one way to locate survivors.

Reuters reports on how it works:

Tito Ortiz Isn't Retired, He's Just Graduated From Fighting

A lot of people were taken aback recently when Cris Cyborg Santos manager said that he believed a Cyborg vs. Ronda Rousey bout would eventually take place, just not at 135 pounds.

It wasnt so much the rhetoric about the fight, but more so who it was saying those words. And that would be Tito Ortiz, who now claims Cyborg among his charges under his new management company, Primetime 360.

Ortizs career spans a time when fighters were lucky to be making in the four-figures for a fight to now, where it isnt uncommon for those at the top to actually bump up into seven-digit paydays.

He believes that he had a lot to do with progressing the sport to that point, but also has the experience of building up his brand and other business interests so that fighting wasnt the be-all, end-all to his life. Ortiz didnt necessarily have to make millions and millions of dollars from his fight career in order to sustain himself once he stepped out of the Octagon for the final time.

During my whole career, I made mistakes. I made positive and negative things to get me to where I am today. I want to go out and find the next generation fighters. Im really going to take this managing stuff by storm. I really want to battle for fighters for what they believe in and what I believe in, Ortiz told MMAWeekly.com about why he decided to start Primetime 360.

Ortiz has had representation over the years. In fact, current UFC president Dana White was once he and Chuck Liddells manager. But Ortiz wasnt a fighter that would lay his life in the hands of his representatives and just accept what was doled out to him.

The former UFC light heavyweight champion, as he says, took many missteps throughout his career, but thats because he was always involved, always taking an active hand in the direction of his career on the business end, not just in the gym and in the cage.

Thats why he believes he has something to offer todays fighters that sets him apart.

Ortiz doesnt intend to promise his fighters that stars and the moon if they sign on with him. He intends to promise them that if they are willing to put in the work, they will be successful, and perhaps more importantly, they will have a future beyond the short lifespan of a professional combat sports athlete.

I want to break the mold on fighters. Theyre going to do all the hard, diligent work to become superstars, said Ortiz. I think thats what it comes down to, where Im showing these guys the right things to do to make themselves a brand. Thats what its really about, a fight for the fighters, and thats what Ive been doing for myself for so long, making the right decisions and not making ones on pure emotions.

Eek! Remote-controlled cyborg cockroaches are real

Scientists with a high tolerance for creepy-crawlies have figured out how to create and control cyborg cockroaches.

How would you like to see this scooting across your kitchen floor?

If Borg ships have vermin on them, they look exactly like a project researchers at North Carolina State University are working on.

These intrepid scientists have taken a lightweight chip with a wireless receiver and transmitter and attached it to a cockroach like a little backpack. For the record, large Madagascar hissing cockroaches are the roach of choice.

A microcontroller is connected to the roach's antennae and cerci (rear sensory organs). Small charges from the wires to the cerci trick the roach into moving in response to a perceived threat. Charges sent to the antennae make the roach think it's bumped into something. Between the two, you have a fairly sophisticated method of cockroach steering.

The researchers imagine using this cyborg cockroach technology to send the little beasties into tight spaces to search for survivors after disasters.

I imagine using this cyborg cockroach technology to scare the bejesus out of unsuspecting friends and for reenacting "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episodes with cockroach actors.

Ronda Rousey: Cris Cyborg Superfight Could Be ‘Biggest MMA Fight of All-Time'

By Shaun Al-Shatti - Staff Writer

Follow , and Like MMA Fighting on Facebook.

Sep 10, 2012 - Strikeforce women's bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey isn't ready to give up on Cris Cyborg just yet.

Despite Cyborg's insistence that her body is unable to cut enough weight to reach the 135-pound limit, Rousey continued throw public jabs at the suspended former featherweight champ on Monday's episode of The MMA Hour, criticizing her for flip-flopping on the weight issue and deriding her career as nothing more than a product of cheating and steroid abuse.

"If you can make 145 [pounds] while you're super juiced out, you can make 135 if you're clean," Rousey brashly declared.

"Cyborg has never had a fair fight. If you really look at it, she's had fights where she came in and outweighed the other girl by 12 pounds and then they still fought. This girl has a long history of cheating and using drugs, and coming in overweight, and no one's ever put their foot down ever about it.

"If we did a catchweight of 140, I 100 percent think she'd just come in overweight and be like, Whatever, come fight me.' Want to know why? Because she's done it several times before. She has a track record of doing these things. This girl does things that are blatantly disrespectful to her opponents, over and over and over her whole career. Someone needs to put their foot down about it. So, yeah, I'm going to be the one that has to do it because I can."

Cyborg has long expressed interest in fighting Rousey in the past, however recently she seems to have moved on from the feud. Following Rousey's lopsided victory over Sarah Kaufman and subsequent callout of the Brazilian, Cyborg posted a surprising rant on her Twitter account that perplexed even Strikeforce officials, stating that a drop to bantamweight was out of the question and she would be awaiting her release from Strikeforce, as her real division no longer existed.

Nonetheless, luring Cyborg into the potential superfight continues to be at the top of Rousey's agenda. Last month Rousey's manager, Darin Harvey, asked for the bout to be overseen by extreme and extensive drug testing, including hair follicle testing that could detect illegal substances up to three months after their original ingestion. Now, however, Rousey has backed off the request.

Cyborg Cockroaches Exist, Could Save Your Life One Day [Video]

Posted: September 8, 2012

In the photo above, a cyborg cockroach is steered along a curving line by remote control. Thats right, a cyborg cockroach.

Practically since the advent of robotics humanity has been working on ways to put a machine in harms way rather than a human. Unmanned aerial drones for the military, for example, can scout for danger and even deliver an attack.

But North Carolina State scientists have their mind on a smaller scale figuring out how to help someone buried in rubble, or gather information on a hostile environment unsafe for people. The obvious solution cyborg cockroaches.

NBC News reports that scientists have outfitted a cockroach with a high-tech backpack that allows researchers to remotely control where it moves. Many unmanned small robots exist, but making them insect-size small has been a challenge because of the large batteries needed to power them. The scientists came up with a creative solution to this dilemma.

Insects have a power process on them, a natural one, Alper Bozkurt, an electrical engineer at North Carolina State University, told NBC News. We just needed to supply power for communication, which is not much.

Slate reports that the Madagascar hissing cockroaches are outfitted with a backpack with electrodes connected to their antennae and cerci. By administering a charge to either the cerci, left antennae or right antennae, scientist control where the bug will go. A jolt to the cerci convinces the bug that something is sneaking up on it, and it will speed up. A jolt to the right antennae turns it left, and a jolt to the left antennae turns it right.

The researchers pointed out that the bugs have a sense of feel, which is key in the the steering mechanism, but add that they do not have pain sensors.

Dont look for an army of cyborg cockroach rescuers to hit the scene on a natural disaster any time soon though. The researchers said their success rate of getting one of the bionic bugs to complete the s-course seen in the video below was only about 10 percent, with the weigh of the backpack sometimes slowing the bugs response time.

Coker: Strikeforce champ Rousey will want fight ahead of potential 'Cyborg' timetable

by Matt Erickson on Sep 07, 2012 at 7:30 am ET

Strikeforce bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey (6-0 MMA, 4-0 SF) and former featherweight champ Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos (10-1 MMA, 4-0 SF) is the fight most seem to want to see once Santos' current steroids suspension is lifted in December.

There are some well-known obstacles to be certain. But Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker said if you're expecting "Cyborg" to be Rousey's next opponent, don't count on it.

"I'm sure Ronda would like to fight before that," Coker on Thursday told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). "She barely broke a sweat in her last fight. It's something where she's been dominant and she's going to want to fight, I think, before Cyborg can actually get back in the cage off the suspension."

Of course, once Santos is eligible to return, there's still the matter of whether she's willing to drop to bantamweight. Rousey has been plenty vocal about Santos needing to move down to 135 pounds if she wants a fight, not believing she, as the champ, should have to go back up in weight especially given Santos' suspension.

Rousey also is of the belief Santos isn't a clean fighter and has said publicly she believes she never has been.

But Coker thinks the fight is destined to take place. Rousey really has yet to be challenged, and certainly wasn't this past month when she dispatched former champ Sarah Kaufman with an armbar in just 54 seconds. A fight with Santos could be her best current bet a test.

"That fight, believe me, is something I think should happen," Coker said. "I think it's something that will happen. And when Cyborg gets off suspension, the conversation is going to get very, very real about putting that fight together because I think that's the fight everyone wants to see."

But in the meantime, what happens with Rousey? True, she is only three weeks removed from her last fight. But if Santos is not likely to be her next opponent, given Coker's belief she'll want back in before a "Cyborg" fight realistically could be made, then who?

Strikeforce recently signed unbeaten Sara McMann (6-0 MMA, 0-0 SF), who like Rousey is an Olympic medalist. McMann won silver in wrestling at the 2004 games; Rousey was a bronze winner in judo in '08. She may be on the short list, perhaps after her debut if she comes up a winner.
