Good times. Campione! Episodes 7-13 StreamingIt's better to remember Campione! for what it does right: the rich background story, the epic scale of battle, the sheer energy of each duel. But there will always be those scenes that just don't belong. Toriko GN 12The ultimate manly man of the food world has returned, with his muscles bulging and his appetite whetted for ever tastier fare. This twelfth volume of Toriko's gourmet adventures isn't the most consecutive in the series to date, but it does provide plenty of action and exotic eats, both of which are part of what makes Mitsutoshi Shimabukuro's tale so entertaining. Hellsing Ultimate BD/DVD Set 1Pushes its action ever on to greater and greater feats of absurdity until reality lies in irretrievable tatters at its jackbooted feet. In short: totally awesome.

Cyborg Surgeon: Hand and Technology Combine in New Surgical Tool That Enables Superhuman …

October 2, 2012 - "Active Tremor Cancellation by a "Smart' Handheld Vitreoretinal Microsurgical Tool Using Swept Source Optical Coherence Tomography" was publishedin OSA's Optics Express. PaperdescribesSMART (Smart Micromanipulation Aided Robotic-surgical Tool) device, which combines Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) imaging technique as distance sensor with computer-controlled piezoelectric motors to actively stabilize surgical tool tip. Thislets surgeons maneuver tool tip precisely and safely. The Optical Society (OSA) 2010 Massachusetts Ave., NW Washington, DC, 20036 USA Press release date: September 27, 2012

WASHINGTONEven the most skilled and steady surgeons experience minute, almost imperceptible hand tremors when performing delicate tasks. Normally, these tiny motions are inconsequential, but for doctors specializing in fine-scale surgery, such as operating inside the human eye or repairing microscopic nerve fibers, freehand tremors can pose a serious risk for patients.

By harnessing a specialized optical fiber sensor, a new smart surgical tool can compensate for this unwanted movement by making hundreds of precise position corrections each second fast enough to keep the surgeons hand on target. Researchers from the Johns Hopkins University Whiting School of Engineering and Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore, Md., have combined the Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) imaging technique as a distance sensor with computer-controlled piezoelectric motors to actively stabilize the tip of a surgical tool. A paper describing their new device, named SMART (Smart Micromanipulation Aided Robotic-surgical Tool), was published today in the Optical Societys (OSA) open-access journal Optics Express.

Microsurgery relies on excellent motor control to perform critical tasks, said Cheol Song, a postdoctoral fellow in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at Johns Hopkins. But certain fine micro-manipulations remain beyond the motor control of even the most skilled surgeon. At its most steady, the human hand naturally trembles, moving on the order of 50-100 microns (about the thickness of a sheet of paper) several times each second.

Various optomechatronics techniques, including robotics, have been developed to help augment stability and minimize the impact of hand tremors. None so far has been able to seamlessly merge simple fiber-optic rapid and fine-grained sensing with handheld automated surgical tools. The major challenge for researchers has been finding a way to precisely measure and compensate for the relative motions of a surgical instrument in relation to the target.

The emerging imaging technique of OCT attracted the attention of the researchers because it has higher resolution (approximately 10 microns) than either MRI or ultrasound. It also uses eye-safe near infrared light to image tissues.

To apply this imaging technique to their work, the research team first had to integrate an OCT-based high-speed high-precision distance sensor directly into a small, handheld surgical device. The device could then hold a variety of surgical instruments at the tip, such as a scalpel or forceps. The well-known fiber-optic based common path optical coherence tomography (CP-OCT) technique provided the essential capability. As its name suggests, the optical signal of this sensor uses the same path, or optical fiber, to both transmit and receive the near infrared light.

Because this single fiber-optic cable is so small and flexible, the researchers could easily integrate it into the front of a tool used for eye surgery. By continually sending and receiving the near infrared laser beams, the high-speed fiber-optic sensor precisely measures the motion of the probe. This information then feeds to a computer that sends signals to small piezoelectric motors integrated into the surgical device to control the position of the tool tip. This creates a series of station keeping maneuvers that compensate for the surgeons hand tremors.

Combined, the sensor and motors can operate accurately at 500 hertz (500 times each second), which is much higher than the typical tremor frequency of 0-15 hertz.

The researchers compared the effectiveness of the system by testing its ability to compensate for hand tremors during 5- and 30-second intervals. According to the researchers, these time periods were sufficient to determine the different characteristic between short- and long-term hand tremors. A 30-second time period is enough to evaluate a surgeons basic physiological hand tremor characteristics, said Song. For complete characterization, however, a record of a full surgical procedure, which typically lasts more than 3 hours, will be needed.

Cyborg Surgeon: Hand and Technology Combine in New Surgical Tool That Enables Superhuman ...

Real-life cyborg-monkey mind-control

Summary: My heart goes out to that cute little monkey with the yellow hat. The science is quite incredible, but I just want to give him a hug.

No matter how you look at it, animal testing is a troubling ethical subject. Animal testing has advanced modern medicine. On the other hand, there's no doubt that the creatures being used for testing -- even if treated in the most humane ways possible -- are still frightened, uncomfortable, and sometimes in real pain.

As this Discovery News article notes:

It is with complete awareness of this ethical paradox that I bring you the following bit of video. The science is, without a doubt, absolutely incredible. The idea that a monkey can control a robotic arm, simply through his thoughts, is something that seemed ripped out of those terrible SciFi channel made-for-TV movies my husband and I like so much.

On one hand, the potential for easing human suffering (okay, and giving Nintendo a new gimmick for game input) is profound. As the video shows, there's a tetraplegic patient who's able to manipulate a computer interface just by thought. Imagine what that man could do, the freedoms he'd be offered, if he could control his own limbs just by thinking about it.

It brings back visions of Steve Austin (the Six Million Dollar Man, not the wrestler) and a real, possible future for amazing bionics.

And yet, on the other hand, my heart goes out to that cute little monkey with the yellow hat. I know that under that hat must be electrodes, that he can't really move in that little box, his head might itch and he can't scratch, and just to get a tiny sip of water, he has to control a giant robotic arm.

I just want to give him a hug.

Berwyn 'Freaktober Fest' kicks off with unveiling of cyborg alien mummy

It was a dark and stormy night as an Indian summer descended back into a soggy fall at Cigars and Stripes in Berwyn.

A fine assemblage of costumed freaks had gathered to listen to a punky electric polka band and watch as a scantily-clad woman tossed around flaming torches. One man was kicked in his privates twice by two members of a Chicago roller derby team on purpose.

The week-long Halloween celebration known as "Freaktober Fest" had begun at Cigars and Stripes, a bar and grill long known for its cast of colorful characters.

And just when things couldn't get any weirder, owner Ronnie Lottz pulled the sheet off a 10-foot-tall statue of a mummified cyborg alien, complete with a rotating chicken wing in its stomach.

The statue is named "Sweet Pea," and tonight was his homecoming.

Sweet Pea had greeted customers for more than 10 years when he disappeared six months ago. Unbeknownst to the eccentric bar owner, his sister and son had taken the mummy to be resurrected again by Harper College professor and artist Darryl Harris.

While Lottz searched for Sweet Pea, he was being recreated through Harris' class, which takes recycled and found materials to make art.

Although Lottz was angry at first, he was eventually let in on the prank. When he found out about the project, he was so pleased with what he saw that he ended up financing the rest of it.

"This looks like aliens came down and stole Sweet Pea, took him to Mars and shot him up with steroids and put him in a workout program. Then they gave him a bunch of guns and sent him back here," said Lottz. "He's complete with light-up eyes, a light-up cigar, moans, groans and a rotating giant chicken wing in his gut."

Sweet Pea's rebirth mirrors a looming change for the bar and restaurant he's become something of a mascot of.

Unprinted Color Cyborg 009 Manga Chapter Found

42-year-old chapter to be included with 3rd reissued volume of Shotaro Ishinomori's series

Ishimori Productions has revealed that it has found a 24-page unpublished colored chapter from Shotaro Ishinomori's Cyborg 009 manga. The chapter (pictured at right), which was written as a part of the "Mythos Cyborg" arc, had been colored 42 years ago.

The publisher Fukkan.com will publish the chapter as a part of its third full-color compiled volume reissue of the original serialized manga. The company published the 695-page "Underground Empire Yomi Version" compiled volume in August, and it published the 693-page "Birth/Assassin Version" compiled volume on Tuesday. The third "Mythos Cyborg Version" volume that includes the newly-discovered chapter will ship in December.

The digital comics platform Comixology announced earlier this month that is has it licensed the entire catalog of Ishinomori's works, including Cyborg 009. Comixology will also release Archaia's American graphic novel adaptation from writers F.J. DeSanto and Bradley Cramp and illustrator Marcus To.

In the original manga, the secret Black Ghost organization transforms nine unsuspecting humans into cyborgs. However, the nine cyborgs turn on their masters and protect the rest of humanity from Black Ghost's plans for world war.

Evangelista 'Cyborg' Santos signs with Legacy FC, February debut expected

by MMAjunkie.com Staff on Oct 27, 2012 at 7:45 pm ET

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Santos, a former Strikeforce title challenger, is expected to make his promotional debut in February on AXS TV.

Santos, 34, hasn't fought since a TKO loss to fast-rising contender Jordan Mein more than 13 months ago. It marked his second straight loss.

Before the skid, the former PRIDE fighter and Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt had posted back-to-back wins over Daniel Zarate and Marius Zaromskis. The latter, which marked his welterweight debut, came in Strikeforce and set up a title shot with then-champ Nick Diaz, which Santos lost via second-round armbar.

Following the subsequent loss to Mein and with no scheduled fights on the horizon, Santos requested and was granted his Strikeforce release.

Steam Greenlight Spotlight: Dead Cyborg

Category: Gaming Posted: October 20, 2012 08:40PM Author: ClayMeow

Dead Cyborg is a free-to-play episodic first-person sci-fi adventure game, created by just one man. Using the Blender Game Engine, Endi (Endre Barath) did it all coding, art, story, and design. Endi describes the game world as "a rusty post-apocalyptic metal and concrete world," and that's certainly the feeling I got when I loaded up the first episode. Yep, the first episode is already released (though obviously not on Steam), and two more episodes will follow (Endi estimates that he is 70% through episode two). He describes the story as being about the meaning of life and death.

If you have ever played a first-person shooter or role-playing game and wanted to explore the world and enjoy the beautiful vistas without the worry of getting a bullet in the back of your head, Dead Cyborg is for you. The art is truly stunning and atmospheric. It's a game about exploration, searching for items, and solving puzzles. If you love the text adventures of old, you'll love how Endi translates that to an immersive, first-person, 3D experience. If you aren't a fan of text adventures, then you may be put off by the puzzles in this game they're simply not that clever. I have not completed the episode yet, but so far the puzzles have mostly been the cliche and often-frustrating scour-the-environment-until-you-find-the-hidden-object variety. In fact, on quite a few occasions, I had to backtrack to find a hidden object after I reached a dead end and realized I needed something else to progress further.

Still, despite its flaws, the first episode of Dead Cyborg is well worth the meager 31MB download. It's a game more concerned with the experience than the gameplay, but if the puzzles do get frustrating, there are walkthroughs to help you get through. Although you can download the first episode from the official website, and while I'm sure you'll be able to do the same for the second episode when it's complete, this game deserves to be on Steam if for nothing more than to help Endi get the exposure he deserves. It may not be a game for everyone, but if you enjoy games that reward exploration and make you think (eg. Dear Esther), then you'll probably enjoy this as well. The game is available for Windows, Mac, and Linux.
