Doctors Crush Cris Cyborg's 135-Pound Hopes, No UFC Contract?

Despite all her contributions and success in women's MMA, Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos will likely miss out on a golden ticket to the UFC.

The former Strikeforce featherweight champ is arguably the most dominant woman in the history of any combat sport, but at 145 pounds, there isn't enough talent yet to fill up a division.

Instead, the UFC has opted to go with Strikeforce bantamweight champ Ronda Rousey and the 135-pound division.

The disparity of talent still remains slim at 135 pounds, but there is enough talent to build upon and take women's MMA to the next level.

Unfortunately, Cyborg may have to miss out on it.

There was talk of her considering a drop in weight, but after meeting with doctors, the Brazilian's hopes and dreams were instantly shot down.

Members of Cyborg's camp confirmed the news to MMAWeekly.com on Tuesday.

According to the doctors, a cut to 135 pounds would be dangerous to Cyborg's physical health. The dangers of the weight cut could even cost her the ability to carry a child later in life, which was a risk she wasn't willing to take.

Regardless, Cyborg's cardiologist refused to sign off on a drop to 135 pounds.

Cyborg made history in August 2009 by defeating Gina Carano for the Strikeforce title to become the first ever mainstream women's MMA champion. Her fierce striking and rare athletic abilities have yet to be matched by any woman in the sport.

Cyborg Guinea Pig's Inner Ear Becomes a Battery

A science fiction nightmare of human bodies becoming batteries in "The Matrix" is still far from reality. But a new experiment that transformed the inner ear of guinea pigs into a biological battery raises more hopeful possibilities for such technology.

Electrodes implanted inside the guinea pigs' inner ears, which bear a strong resemblance to that of humans, succeeded in powering up attached radio transmitters all without the furry mammals suffering from major hearing loss. That marks the first time researchers have harnessed electrochemical power in mammals, and could pave the way for medical sensors implanted in human inner ears.

"It will allow us to develop fully implanted electronics (e.g., inner ear sensors that have a wireless chip) without the need for a traditional battery," said Anantha Chandrakasan, an electrical engineer and computer scientist at MIT, in an email. "The system will be self-sustaining."

Implanted electronics could track the health of the inner ear and parts of the human body located just millimeters from the inner ear the carotid artery, the facial nerve, and the brain's temporal lobe. Future sensors could also monitor deafness among young kids with hearing aids, or track the hearing sensitivity of U.S. soldiers or civilian workers at risk of hearing loss, said Konstantina Stankovic, an otologic surgeon at Harvard University who worked with Chandrakasan.

Animals such as cockroaches, snails and clams have previously become living batteries in labs. But the possibility of harnessing electrochemical power in mammals brings the idea much closer to humans. [Quiz: Sci-Fi vs. Real Technology]

The battery power of the inner ear comes from the difference in electrical charge between the inner ear's endolymph and perilymph fluids. That steady power source could prove much more reliable than other methods of harvesting power from body heat, motion or vibration, according to the Harvard-MIT team that detailed their work in the Nov. 11 issue of the journal Nature Biotechnology.

"The inner ear in particular is particularly attractive because it's a stable source of energy and it's maintained throughout life," Stankovic told TechNewsDaily.

But researchers had to use a single burst of radio waves to "kick-start" the control circuit because the inner ear's voltage the electrical charge difference was too low. They also had to design their electronic device to run on the mere nanowatts (billionths of watts) of power available from the inner ear by building up charge until enough power became available.

"So we can accumulate energy on an energy storage device and then burst energy to power higher power electronics," Chandrakasan explained. "When the transmitter and sensor is off, we have to manage the power by shutting them off completely."

The MIT-Harvard team still hopes to figure out how to make electrodes of the right size to minimize damage to the inner ear while still extracting enough power. The researchers also want to take the next step of implanting both the electrodes and the electronic device inside the guinea pigs' ears, rather than just the electrodes.

Ronda Rousey's Manager Reacts to Cyborg's Doctor Putting Brakes on 135 Pounds

Following a report that said Cris "Cyborg's" doctors refused to sign off on a weight cut for the former Strikeforce champion's move to 135 pounds, Ronda Rousey's management is calling shenanigans.

Darin Harvey, who represents Rousey in her MMA dealings, said on Tuesday that Cyborg's inability to make the women's bantamweight division is simply the opinion of one physician, and guarantees other doctors would easily give a green light for the weight cut.

"If you ask five doctors, you'll get five different opinions," Harvey said in an exclusive interview. "I guarantee you, you can find doctors that'll say the weight cut will be fine."

Harvey speculated that the doctor, who went unnamed in the report, is working in the favor of his patient in an effort to force a potential Rousey-Cyborg bout at 145 pounds.

"It all depends on what side they're working for," Harvey said. "It's her doctor. If you're going to trial, I can find a professional witness to make you look innocent or make you look guilty."

As Cyborg is currently serving a suspension for performance-enhancing drugs, she can't compete until after January 2013. At that time, Strikeforce is expected to fold and fighters from the organization will presumably transition over to the UFC. It's anticipated that Rousey and Cyborg will be part of the company's first women's division.

Harvey said that a bout between his client and Cyborg has the potential to have over a million Pay-Per-View buys. And although he's confident Rousey can beat the suspended fighter regardless of weight class, Harvey said he believes the 135-pound limit is still a realistic goal for Cyborg -- assuming there's no drugs involved.

"We want that fight because it's a big money fight," he said. "We want to fight Cyborg and I think Ronda can beat her at any weight. But I believe if she's not taking drugs, 135 pounds will be absolutely no problem.

"I don't want to see anyone get hurt long-term but my personal belief is she can lose the weight. She would just prefer an advantage to fight at 145 pounds. And I think we have the advantage at 135."

When asked if he and his client would consider having the fight at 145 pounds, Harvey wasn't entirely closed to the idea. Ultimately, Rousey has the final decision, Harvey said, and although he would advise against moving up in weight, it's something they would have to consider.

Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes - Godsmack: I Stand Alone
my first Metal Gear Solid video! i thought about doing one for a long time but i haven #39;t done it until now. I #39;ve been a Metal Gear Solid fan since 1999. my big bro gave me the original MGS1 game for my birthday back in 1999. it #39;s one of the best games I #39;ve ever played and one of my favorites! i love the original MGS1 game better than the remake (Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes) and one of the reasons i love the original game is because of the acting and dialogue! the acting and dialogue was so real and the story is magnificent! the acting in the remake however isn #39;t the same. but i chose to do a remake video because of the cutscenes and only the cutscenes so i can use the song by Godsmack, I Stand Alone. the cutscenes are longer no doubt but i edit the cutscenes real short as ai can but it was still so long that i had to use the same Godsmack song twice lol i hope you like it^^ characters: Solid Snake Liquid Snake Meryl Silverburgh Gray Fox aka Cyborg Ninja Roy "Colonel" Campbell Dr. Naomi Hunter Dr. Hal Emmerich aka Otacon Mei Ling Revolver Ocelot Psycho Mantis Sniper Wolf Decoy Octopus Vulcan Raven Master Miller Nastasha Romanenko Donald Anderson Kenneth Baker Jim Houseman Johnny Sasaki Soundtracks: MGS1 - "The Best is Yet to Come" Godsmack - "I Stand Alone"From:kingmik321Views:31 3ratingsTime:07:54More inGaming
