Tito Ortiz: '100-Percent' Fight with Cris Cyborg and Ronda Rousey Will Happen

Cris "Cyborg" Santos will finally return to action in early April as part of Invicta Fighting Championships, but there is still a chance she could end up in the UFC as part of a superfight against current bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey.

Just last week after requesting for her release from Zuffa (parent company of the UFC and her former employers at Strikeforce), Cyborg signed a three-fight deal with Invicta beginning with her April 5 showdown against Ediane Gomes.

Over the weekend, UFC president Dana White sat baffled at the decision to sign a deal directly with Invicta when they had an offer on the table to put her under contract to the UFC and still let her fight in the all-women's promotion.

Now as Cyborg's manager, former UFC heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz, explains it there were more moving parts than just signing a deal with the UFC and going to fight in Invicta.

"We wanted to make the deal happen with the UFC. Negotiations were between me and Dana and it was for a four-fight deal with the fourth fight being against Ronda (Rousey), three fights going to Invicta and the fourth fight would be against Ronda. We were going to do a catchweight of 140 (pounds) and they said 'OK we'll call you back and we're going to find out,'" Ortiz explained in an exclusive interview with Bleacher Report on Sunday.

"I wait two days and I get a call back and they said 'no, we'll do an eight-fight deal, we'll send her to Invicta, have her fight three fights and next year we'll have her fight against Ronda at 140 possibly,' but there's no exact direction what (weight) they wanted to use. So it really came down to the factor of them going back and forth."

Ortiz says recent comments about how "irrelevant" his client apparently is, is becoming part of their ultimate decision to do a deal directly with Invicta for fewer fights overall, but hopefully strengthening their bargaining power if Cyborg wins all of those fights.

"Why would we allow our client to commit to such a long deal with no real plans or commitments to fight in the UFC? Why would we agree to a deal where an organization labels her as irrelevant as Dana (White) kept saying how irrelevant Cyborg was? We didn't run away from the fight. We just asked for her release to sign a three-fight deal with Invicta," Ortiz stated.

"She'll fight the No. 2 contender at 145 pounds and then she'll fight for the title against their 145-pound champ and then maybe Dana will have a little bit more respect for Cris Cyborg and value her as a counterpart for any superfight in women's MMA."

Ortiz may be a new player in the world of management for other fighters, but he negotiated and worked for his own career in the UFC for many years and now he believes he's in a unique position to use what he learned to help his clients.

Excited for Marquee Signings, Invicta Pres Believes Cris Cyborg Deserves Second Chance

Its been a big week for all-female fight promotion Invicta FC. Not only did the promotion announce their upcoming fifth card to take place on April 5, but the signings of former Bellator champion Zoila Frausto-Gurgel and ex-Strikeforce title holder Cristiane Cyborg Santos further established a high level of excitement for the promotion.

Speaking to MMAWeekly.com shortly after the signing of Santos, Invicta president Shannon Knapp discussed what is already becoming an even better second year for her promotion.

MMAWeekly.com: Before we talk about the recent moves Invicta has been making, tell us your thoughts on the promotions first show of the year this past January.

Shannon Knapp: It was both good and bad. We crashed the pay servers on UStream, but what was more disheartening was that it was complicated for the fans of Invicta going through it. Were definitely working on all our strategies moving forward on how fans will be able watch this upcoming card.

As far as the card itself, it absolutely delivered. We didnt have as many finishes, but that being said, any fight that went to decision was an absolutely good, competitive fight. So overall, it was a very good event.

MMAWeekly.com: Moving on to this past weeks big news, tell us your thoughts on signing Cris Santos.

Shannon Knapp: Of course were delighted and excited here at Invicta to bring Cris on board. Ive worked with Cris for many years now. I think shes one of the most amazing female athletes if not the best athlete pound for pound in the world. Its a huge signing for us to add an athlete like her to our roster.

MMAWeekly.com: There had been controversial talk prior to her signing with Invicta about trying to get her to fight at 135 pounds. Will she be fighting at her previous 145 pounds?

Shannon Knapp: It makes sense to us because we have compelling fights for her 145. We have under contract Ediane Gomez, Julia Budd, Fiona Muxlow; weve got compelling fights, compelling match-ups for her. So it makes sense for her (to stay at 145).

MMAWeekly.com: There are obvious concerns with her coming of a suspension for testing positive for performance enhancing drugs in her last fight in December of 2011. Can you address any concerns you may have about this in her signing with Invicta?

Cyborg Santos says she asked UFC to release her, not afraid of ground with Rousey

Cris Cyborg Santos Signs with Invicta FC, Debuts Against Ediane Gomes

Former Strikeforce champion Cris "Cyborg" Santos has officially signed on with Invicta Fighting Championships and will debut with the promotion at their upcoming show on April 5.

Santos made the announcement along with her manager former UFC light heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz on Friday night at a press conference attended by Bleacher Report at the Punishment Training Center in California.

The former 145-pound champion will meet Ediane "India" Gomes at the upcoming Invicta 5 show happening in Kansas City, MO in early April.

Gomes was already scheduled to be on the card against former Strikeforce fighter Julia Budd, but she will now face Santos instead.

The last year for Cris Cyborg has been anything but pleasant after testing positive for anabolic steroids after her last fight against Hiroko Yamanaka. She was subsequently suspended for one year by the California State Athletic Commission.

Since that time, Cyborg has been in a constant battle for a potential fight against UFC bantamweight women's champion Ronda Rousey, but with the fight only being offered at 135 pounds, the Brazilian has not taken the bout.

Cyborg has stated on several occasions that there's no way she could cut the additional weight to move down to 135 pounds, and that statement has negated her potential signing with the UFC.

Earlier this week, Cyborg received her official release from Zuffa (parent company of the UFC and Strikeforce) allowing her to sign with a different promotion.

Now the former Strikeforce champion has joined forces with Invicta Fighting Championships on a deal that will see her return to the cage for the first time in more than a year.

Santos will face fellow 145-pound fighter Ediane Gomes, who comes into the fight on a four-fight win streak with victories over Hiroko Yamanaka and Leslie Smith.

Dana White Trying to Make Sense of Moves by Tito Ortiz and Cris Cyborg

Cris "Cyborg" Santos has signed a multi-fight deal with Invicta Fighting Championship, but according to UFC president Dana White, she could have been under contract with the UFC and still fought for Invicta until her manager Tito Ortiz asked for her release.

Santos has been in the middle of an ongoing battle for her future after stating on several occasions that she would be unable to cut down from 145 pounds to 135 pounds to fight in the lone women's division the UFC currently supports.

So last week, Santos' manager, former UFC light heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz, asked for her release from the promotion, allowing her to sign with another organization.

Then on Friday, Ortiz along with his client announced that she had indeed signed a deal with Invicta, the all women's MMA promotion, and would debut at their next card coming up in April.

UFC president Dana White revealed on Saturday when speaking to reporters that they had a plan in place for Cyborg that included her fighting for Invicta, but ultimately she ended up asking for her release instead.

"So we were going to sign her to a contract and we were going to have her fight in Invicta, which means we pay all the bills for her to fight in Invicta. It would be under a UFC contract with all the perks and benefits of being a UFC fighter and would fight in Invicta. So instead of doing that they chose to not do that and fight in Invicta," White said to Bleacher Report. "If you can make logic out of that whole fking situation, you're a better man that I am"

White said the plan was hatched when he spoke to Invicta FC president Shannon Knapp because he wanted to keep Cyborg in the UFC but allow her to fight in another promotion for the time being. Invicta currently has fighters at 145 pounds, whereas the UFC does not.

"We don't have 145 pound division so we're going back and forth with these guys and this deal, so I called the girl Shannon Knapp who owns Invicta and said look if I do this deal with Cyborg and you give her fights over there, I'll pay the bills you put on the fights over there till I can figure out how this whole thing's going to go down. She goes absolutely no problem, we'd love to do it," White explained about the UFC working with Invicta.

"The next thing I know they want out of the contract and then they sign with them."

At this point, Cyborg is still signed with Invicta and fighting at 145 pounds, and hypothetically she could still eventually land in the UFC. For now she has been completely released from the promotion, and the UFC no longer foots the bill.

Dana White Trying to Make Sense of Moves by Tito Ortiz and Cris Cyborg

Cris Cyborg signs with Invicta FC, will make her debut at Invicta FC 5

Cris "Cyborg" Justino, the former Strikeforce women's 145-pound champion who was just released this week by the UFC, has signed with the Invicta Fighting Championships and will debut on their next show on April 5.

Cyborg (10-1, 1 no-contest) hasn't fought since her Dec. 17, 2011 title defense against Hiroko Yamanaka, which she originally won via TKO in just 16 seconds. That win was overturned when the muscular Brazilian tested positive for the veterinary steroid Stanozolol.

Cyborg's manager, Tito Ortiz, made the official announcement Friday night at a press conference in Huntington Beach, Calif. Ortiz unveiled a poster for the Invicta show, which listed Cyborg as facing Ediane Gomes (10-2), a Brazilian who now lives in Coconut Creek, Fla. At the press conference, neither Ortiz nor Cyborg ever mentioned Gomes' name. The poster stated "live on pay-per-view" at the bottom, although neither Ortiz, nor Invicta in its release, made any mention of pay-per-view.

The show takes place at the Ameristar Casino Hotel in Kansas City. Gomes had been already announced to face Julia Budd (4-2) on the show. Budd will now face Flona Muxlow (6-2). The show also features an Invicta atomweight (105 pound) fight with champion Jessica Penne (10-1, 1 no contest) vs. Michelle "Karate Hottie" Waterson (10-3), and a match to create the company's first flyweight champion with Barb Honchak (7-2) vs. Vanessa Porto (15-5).

Another name not mentioned at the part of the press conference that aired on "Inside MMA" was Marloes Coenen (21-5). Simultaneous to the press conference, Invicta sent out a press release, announcing the Cyborg vs. Gomes winner would face Coenen.

After Cyborg defeated Gina Carano in the highest-profile woman's MMA fight in history on August 15, 2009, becoming the first Strikeforce woman's champion at 145 pounds, her first title defense was a third-round stoppage of Coenen in a fight she dominated due to her far greater physical strength.

Instead, a nervous Ortiz, as well as Cyborg, in broken English, talked only about UFC bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey. Provided both keep winning, Rousey vs. Cyborg would be the dream woman's fight of the current generation, but there are weighty issues keeping them apart.

Normally signing a multi-fight deal with another promotion would kill any chance of facing a UFC champion, but UFC and Invicta have a working relationship. The major issue is Cyborg's insistence on not fighting at less than 140 pounds. Rousey is champion at 135, and has been insistent that Cyborg can't demand a special weight class when she's coming off a steroid suspension, stating she believes if Cyborg was clean, she could make 135. Dana White said that UFC is only doing a bantamweight division, so if Cyborg wants the fight that's the weight she has to make.

As part of the press conference, they had Cyborg strip to her fighting outfit and step on the scale. She weighed 160 pounds, looking thicker and less muscular than at her 145 pound weigh-ins in the past. Ortiz a few weeks ago had said Cyborg walked around at 172 pounds, insisting there was no way she could cut to 135.

"It is literally impossible for her to make that weight," said Ortiz.

Cris Cyborg Santos Parts Ways with UFC, Says Hello to Invicta FC

UFC president Dana White confirmed just a couple of days ago that he and his promotion were done dealing with Cris Cyborg Santos, but on Friday, we learned just what is next for the former Strikeforce featherweight champion.

Cyborg is heading to Invicta FC, where she will immediately jump into the mix at 145 pounds as one of the promotions top contenders.

Her first fight is already set, as she returns from more than a year on the sidelines, serving out a 12-month suspension after testing positive for steroids following her last fight. Cyborg will square off with fellow Brazilian and two-time Invicta veteran Ediane Gomes at Invicta FC 5 on April 5 in Kansas City.

Cyborg and her manager, UFC Hall of Famer Tito Ortiz, announced her new home at a Friday press conference.

The winner of the match-up between Cyborg and Gomes will square off with Marloes Coenen at Invicta FC 6, on a date to be announced.

White said the UFC was prepared to keep Cyborg under contract after they assimilated the roster of Strikeforce fighters, but couldnt come to a reasonable agreement that satisfied both the promotion and Cyborg.

The UFC has no 145-pound womens division, and was unwilling to have its 135-pound champion, Ronda Rousey, fight outside of her weight class any time soon. Cyborg was unwilling to make the drop to 135 pounds.

White was still willing to keep her under contract and find fights for her outside of the organization, likely with Invicta, but that didnt sit well either her or Ortiz.

UFC wanted to sign a huge deal with Cris Cyborg, but they wanted to stick her over in Invicta. It didnt make sense to me, Ortiz told Inside MMA recently.

I talked to Cyborg time and time again, asked her and asked her. She said I would love to do a three-fight deal; fourth fight would be against Ronda. Lets get it done at 140, not be a fight for the 135-pound championship.

A hole opened in the sky and interdimensional Cyborg beings poured out of the clouds like ants escaping a flooded hill. The bridge had been rebuilt, the vortex restored. UFC 157 Media Call: Ronda Rousey Has Hash Words for Cyborg, Respect for Liz Carmouche
http://www.MMAWeekly.com -- Ronda Rousey had some harsh word for Cris Cyborg during the UFC 157 conference call with the media, but showed nothing but respect for Liz Carmouche, her UFC 157 main event opposition. Carmouche reciprocated, while both women had a lot to say about the UFC #39;s commitment to bringing them, and women #39;s MMA in general into the Octagon. Dan Henderson and Lyoto Machida were also on the call to discuss their co-main event bout. Rousey and Henderson, both former Olympians, also addressed the IOC #39;s decision to remove wrestling from the Olympic Games.
