That was UFC president Dana White talking a few weeks ago on the fight promotion's weekly show on Fuel TV, his appearance ostensibly to hype the first women's bout in company history. But his bitter words were not aimed at Liz Carmouche, who'll make history along with Rousey in the main event of UFC 157 on Saturday night in Anaheim, Calif. No, White was trash talking Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos, whom he'd like us to believe is afraid of his women's champion.

But Santos isn't the one running scared. The UFC is.

Dana & Co. have a good thing going. They've created an attention-grabbing women's division solely upon the star power of Rousey, the former Olympian with the looks and charisma to draw the interest of the ESPN the Magazine "Body Issue," the HBO show Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel and other media avenues that otherwise have little use for this sport. She has captivated the mainstream like no mixed martial artist before her.

Rousey also has dominated her fights like no mixed martial artist before her. You know the resume by now: Six professional bouts, six first-round finishes, five of them in 49 seconds or faster. That's a vital ingredient of the Rousey narrative, even as it relates to her Hollywood red carpet and TV talk show appearances. "I probably get more attention fighting because of how I look," she acknowledges during the HBO show, which has been airing this week. "But if I didn't know how to fight, and I just looked the way I did, no one would know who I am."

If there's a question mark still lingering amid all of the exclamation points in the success story of Ronda Rousey, it has to do with the quality of the opposition she's faced. Sure, her last two conquests have been a reigning champion and a former champ. And Saturday night's opponent, known as the "GirlRilla," is toughness personified, from her military background to the grit she's shown in the cage against more experienced fighters. But those impressive labels - "champion" and "toughness" - are weighed down by the perception that women's MMA is lacking in depth. It's a perception that's both pervasive and longstanding. The women's game was viewed the same way back when a different fighter was the clear alpha female.

That fighter, of course, was Santos. And the only reason we're talking about her in the past tense is that she hasn't won a fight since the summer of 2010. Well, she actually did return to the Strikeforce cage a year and a half after that, and her stay lasted only 16 seconds before she TKO'd Hiroko Yamanaka. But the result later was changed to a no contest after "Cyborg" tested positive for the anabolic steroid stanozolol.

There's the rub. Though Santos is once again eligible to fight after having her license suspended for a year by the California State Athletic Commission, the UFC hasn't exactly rolled out the red carpet. "Cyborg" vs. "Rowdy Ronda" would have been the logical choice for the promotion's historic first. It's the one fight that even those with little regard for women's MMA would be intrigued to see. But Dana White & Co. have invested much in this new division, a venture they had no interest in undertaking until Rousey came along. What if their Olympic-hero, sex-symbol champ were to be vanquished by a brutish Brazilian with the steroid-tainted resume? How does that fit into the marketing plan?

Jeff Wagenheim: White, UFC still nixing chance of Rousey-Cyborg duel

Originally a 360 Indie game, this XBLA success story reveled in the hardcore fun of hacking up cyborg ninjas--along with boring, regular cyborgs. The protagonist, a dishwasher turned samurai for the dystopia, wanted to free the world from cyborg oppression, as well as avenge the death of his sister, Yuki. Unfortunately for the dishwasher, one of his most challenging cyborg foes turned out to be his reanimated sister, and he had to de-animate her (so to speak) in his quest to save the world.

Sequels have a way of fixing tragedies like killing your brainwashed sister, and Yuki returned as a co-star in The Dishwasher: Vampire Smile. Now that she was back from the grave, players got to control her devastating combination of sword and chainsaw attacks. Old-school horror fans no doubt appreciated her Evil Dead-like appendage, and Yuki turned that unwanted enhancement back on her enemies with finesse matching her brothers. Perhaps she misses her right hand, but its hard to argue with the results.

It didn't take Cristiane (Cyborg) Santos long to find a new home.

Shortly after being released from her Zuffa contract last week, the Brazilian signed a deal with the all-female promotion Invicta FC.

The move was not unexpected after the featherweight publically stated she did not wish to drop down to bantamweight, the only women's division currently in the UFC.

Santos, the former Strikeforce 145-pound title-holder who at one point was considered the best pound-for-pound female fighter in the world, spent the last year serving a suspension for a positive drug test.

In her return, she will make her promotional debut against streaking submission ace Ediane (India) Gomes (10-2) at Invicta FC 5 on April 5 at the Ameristar Casino Hotel in Kansas City. The winner will take on Marloes Coenen for the vacant featherweight belt at Invicta's next event.

"I am excited to finally get back in the cage and to have the opportunity to fight for Invicta Fighting Championships, which has shown a tremendous amount of commitment to furthering the growth of women's MMA," Santos said. "I will be ready on April 5 for Ediane and I plan to dominate my competition as I've done in the past."

The 27-year-old Cyborg is universally recognized as the most devastating striker in women's MMA. She boasts eight victories by knockout since making her pro debut in 2005.

"Cris' incredible performances in front of national TV audiences over the last few years have helped put women's MMA on the radar of the masses and paved the way for others to establish themselves in the sport," Invicta FC President Shannon Knapp said.

Gomes' original opponent, Port Moody B.C.'s Julia (The Jewel) Budd, will now face rising star Fiona Muxlow.

Invicta FC 5 will feature two title bouts. In the main event, reigning atomweight champion Jessica Penne will defend her belt against superstar Michelle (The Karate Hottie) Waterson, while in the co-main event Vanessa Porto will square off against Barb Honchak for the inaugural Invicta FC flyweight title.

Cyborg signs with Invicta, to debut in April

Cris "Cyborg" Santos said Monday she won't consider Ronda Rousey the world's best fighter as long as a Cyborg-Rousey superfight fails to materialize.

"I don't want to talk about her more, but I want to fight her...Maybe she's now happy because we won't fight soon," Santos saidMonday onThe MMA Hourbroadcast, hosted by MMA reporter Ariel Helwani. "She has never proven she's the best in the world because she has not fought me."

Last week, Cyborg (10-1-1)signed with all-female promotion Invicta Fighting Championships. That move followed a wild news week for the Brazilian fighter and her manager, former UFC great Tito Ortiz, which saw Cyborg request and receive her release from the UFC before she ever took a fight. Cyborg requested the release despite the UFC allowing Cyborg to simultaneously sign with the UFC and compete for Invicta.

But there was apparently more to the story. Monday's interview followed in the wake of Ortiz telling Bleacher ReportSunday in an exclusive interview that the UFC's ultimate eight-fight offer was too much.Cyborg concurred with that thinking Monday afternoon.

"[The UFC] wants eight fights in my contract," Cyborg said. "I don't want eight fights at 135 pounds. I don't see anything after Ronda...I think it's better for me to do Invicta. Now I want only to think about my next fight."

In Sunday's Bleacher Report interview, Ortiz said recent comments from the UFC that Cyborg was becoming "irrelevant" provided additional motivation to work only with Invicta for the time being. Ortiz added, however, that he believedCyborg-Rousey would "100 percent" happen, and that a 140-pound catchweightbout remained a possibility.

Cyborg is just about universally regarded as the top threat to the undefeated Rousey. Rousey, the face of women's MMA and the UFC's first-ever female belt-holder, makes her Octagon debut Saturday night against Liz Carmouche in the main event of UFC 157.

Cyborg, who said Monday she will not attend UFC 157, denied feeling any resentment over being excluded from the first woman's fight in UFC history, and said she was hoping an exciting contest would continue to build public interest in women's MMA.

"UFC is an event, and it has one guy at the [top of] organization," Cyborg said, in apparent reference to UFC president Dana White. "He's doing whatever he wants to do...He's the one who will put the girls wherever he wants to put them. I feel good. I think all my fans know who is the best in the world...I like aggressive fights. I like two girls fighting. I hope the fans like the fight [on Saturday]."

Cyborg is slated to make her Invicta debut April 5 against Ediane Gomes.

Women's 145-pound powerhouse Cris Cyborg and her manager Tito Ortiz say the goal is still the same: to fight Ronda Rousey. They say that even though just last week, they succeeded in getting Cyborg released from her Zuffa contract in order to sign with Invicta. They say it even though that decision moved her further away from the goal than she was even a few days ago, even though she continues to insist she can't make the bantamweight limit, and even though she claims to have no rooting interest in Saturday night's UFC 157 matchup between Rousey and Liz Carmouche.

To hear Ortiz tell it, it is all part of a long-term strategy to increase Cyborg's marketability and attractiveness to Zuffa, hopefully leading to a scenario where it's a fight that can no longer be ignored.

There is some evidence he may be correct. Cyborg's name has been all over the MMA news in the last week, with first, her demand to be release met, and then, the announcement of an April Invicta fight against Ediane Gomes.

"Everyone wants to do interviews with us and everyone wants to know whats going on," Ortiz said in a joint interview with Cyborg on Monday's edition of The MMA Hour. "I guess Cyborg really is relevant no matter what."

That last statement came as a sort of retort to UFC president Dana White, who said at one point last week that Cyborg was presently "irrelevant" in his UFC picture. However, there was a little more to the story, in that White had floated to Cyborg and Ortiz the opportunity to sign a Zuffa contract but compete in Invicta, on Zuffa's dime, until they could figure out the future together.

Cyborg and Ortiz declined that opportunity. Cyborg said she was opposed to the eight-fight deal proposed by Zuffa because she could see nothing for her on the horizon past the bout with Rousey. Ortiz added that the salary increases offered in the deal were "not much at all."

Given those two factors, they chose to strike out on their own, independently reaching a deal with Invicta, the upstart women's fight promotion that has produced four events to date.

The hope is that Cyborg can string together a win streak that increases her profile and puts more pressure on Zuffa to bring her back into the fold to face Rousey. If Cyborg can get past Gomes in her debut, she would next be paired off with Marloes Coenen, a well-respected former Strikeforce champion at 135 pounds who has since returned to her past weight class of 145. Such a win would certainly cause many observers to take notice.

"Do three fights, show how dominant she can be in three fights, then we can negotiate and show whats shes truly worth," Ortiz said. "I'm going to do my part as a promoter and manager of getting her name huge and showing everybody that shes a force to be reckoned with and never to be forgotten."

When it comes to Rousey-Cyborg, Ortiz and Cyborg are also sticking to their guns on the catch weight provision. Ortiz said that Cyborg tried a practice cut down to 135 pounds but was cut off before she ever got close.

What a long strange trip it's been for Cris Cyborg.

In under two years time, the Brazilian wrecking machine has gone from being the most feared female mixed martial artist on the planet, to teetering on the boundaries of relevance. With women's MMA, a sport the 27-year-old helped build, is currently experiencing its greatest push to date, the current situation Cyborg finds herself in only becomes all the more curious.

Multiple factors have played a hand in the former Strikeforce featherweight champion's fall from prominence. That being said, the road back to the top of the sport is still an open path to travel. But with her request to be released from her UFC contract and signing to compete in the Invicta FC fight promotion against Ediane Gomes in April, it appears navigation on the journey to reclaim her status will ultimately play the most crucial role.

Inside the cage, Cyborg isn't a fighter many women are lining up to tangle with. Unfortunately for the former Chute Boxe fighter, her most difficult battle will likely come on the front lines of MMA media.

Not Buying Tickets to The Ronda Rousey Show

This Saturday night, the doors of the Octagon will open for the first women's MMA bout in the organization's history. The media push to promote the show down between women's bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey's first title defense against Liz Carmouche has been non-stop and the blitz has put the spotlight on WMMA more than ever before.

While Carmouche is a solid opponent to face Rousey in the historic bout, the Team Hurricane Awesome fighter wasn't the UFC's first choice-- a turn of events the UFC has made public. In fact, had things gone differently during the process of putting together the first women's bout under the UFC banner, the long-awaited show down between Rousey and Cyborg would be the main event at this weekend's UFC 157 in Anaheim.

Cyborg was on the sidelines in 2012, serving a one-year suspension after failing her post-fight drug test following her fight with Hiroko Yamanaka in December of 2011. During her absence, Rousey's stock skyrocketed as she not only claimed the Strikeforce bantamweight title against Miesha Tate, but defended the belt before the year closed out.

"Rowdy's" success only served to build the potential match-up of former Strikeforce champions, as she called out Cyborg at every turn. But the biggest hitch in making the fight a reality came down to the 10-pound weight difference between their respective weight classes.
