Cyberpunk, Final Fantasy 7 or Last of Us 2: What is the BIGGEST game of the year? – Express

A few weeks ago a fight broke out in the office. Voices were raised, fingers were pointed and feelings were hurt, as we argued which of Cyberpunk 2077, The Last of Us Part 2 and Final Fantasy 7 Remake was the biggest game of 2020.

The answer of course is Cyberpunk 2077, a game so impressive that most people were positive it was being developed for next-gen consoles like the PS5 and Xbox X.

Another colleague is convinced that The Last of Us Part 2 is the biggest game of the year, to the point of incredulity that it's even up for debate.

Then there are the Final Fantasy 7 fans who have waited so long for a remake that there's no way anything else could possibly measure up.

There's no denying that all three games have their merits, and that Coronvirus not withstanding, 2020 is going to be a banner year for gaming.

But in order to settle the argument once and for all, Express Online has decided to hand things over to you, the readers.

Which is the highest-profile game of 2020, the main event, the title you're looking forward to most?

Is it CD Projekt's futuristic RPG Cyberpunk 2077? Is it Naughty Dog's Last of Us sequel? Or is the return of Square Enix's magnum opus an event without equal? Let us know by taking the poll below.

With an April 10 release date, Final Fantasy 7 Remake will be the first of the three blockbuster games to launch.

With Final Fantasy 7 Remake's release date just over a month away, fans can get a taste for the action by playing the recently released PS4 demo.

Available as a free PS4 download, the Final Fantasy 7 Remake demo drops players into the early stages of the game.

"The new demo features a lengthy segment from the very beginning of the game: the iconic bombing mission against the Shinra Electric Power Company, and the subsequent escape," reads a PlayStation Blog post.

"Youll control two of the games cast spiky-haired ex-SOLDIER Cloud Strife, and the ballistically-limbed Barret Wallace and enact a dangerous plan to infiltrate and destroy Mako Reactor 1."

Final Fantasy 7 Remake will be followed by PS4 exclusive The Last of Us 2 on May 29.

The Last of Us Part 2 sees a 19-year-old Ellie embark on what Sony describes as a "brutal journey of retribution".

While very little has been seen of the game in action, The Last of Us 2 is said to feature broader and more complex environments for players to explore.

As for Cyberpunk 2077, the ambitious open-world game was recently given a September 17 release date on PS4 and Xbox One.

Set in the futuristic location of Night City, players control a mercenary named V.

"You play as V, a mercenary outlaw going after a one-of-a-kind implant that is the key to immortality," reads the official description.

"You can customise your characters cyberware, skillset and playstyle, and explore a vast city where the choices you make shape the story and the world around you."

Happy Birthday William Gibson: Interesting facts about the pioneer of cyberpunk in fiction – Hindustan Times

The man who coined the term cyberspace in the 1982 short story Burning Chrome, William Ford Gibson was born on March 17, 1948. Widely credited with pioneering the science fiction subgenre known as cyberpunk, Gibson began his career as a writer in the late 1970s, thematically, focusing on effects of cybernetics, technology and computer networks on human lives.

His futuristic debut novel Neuromancer, which was published in 1984, follows a washed-up computer hacker, Henry Case, who is hired for a job, which pits him against a powerful AI. Neuromancer was the first novel to be put under the genre of cyberpunk fiction, going on to becoming the first novel to win Nebula Award, Philip K Dick Award and Hugo Award.

Neuromancer was the beginning of a trilogy, which came to be known as the famed dystopic Sprawl series. After having lost his father early in life, the author and his mother would move to Wytheville. However, Gibsons mum too passed when he was 18.

Gibson never graduated, and instead immersed himself in counterculture as he travelled between California and Europe. As a youngster, the author consciously rejected religion and instead took refuge in science fiction as well as authors as Burroughs and Henry Miller. In 1967 the author elected to move to Canada in order to avoid being drafted to the Vietnam War.

Before becoming an author, Gibson worked as a teaching assistant for three years on a film history course. During this time, Gibson met punk musician and author John Shirley and they became lifelong friends. It was Shirley who persuaded the author to publish his early short stories and take writing as a serious career option.

Gibson was subsequently introduced to Bruce Sterling and Lewis Shiner through Shirley, and in 1982, after a week in Austin, Texas, the four along with Rudy Rucker would go on to form the core of the radical cyberpunk literary movement.

Gibsons early short stories focus on cybernetics and cyberspace on human lives and their thematic intermingling, going to develop into a bleak film noir feel in 1981.

Reports say that after watching the 1982 cyberpunk film Blade Runner, Gibson, who had already written two-thirds of his debut novel Neuromancer, he re-wrote two-thirds of the book twelve times, fearing it would be a failure.

However, on its publication, Neuromancer quickly became an underground hit, going on to win a triple crowns in science fiction.

It was Gibsons novels Pattern Recognition (2003), Spook Country (2007) and Zero History (2010) which put him into mainstream bestseller lists.

The author, who is credited with renovating science fiction, at a time when the genre was considered to be widely insignificant, has gone on to publish the 2014 novel The Peripheral, followed by Archangel in 2017. He last published Agency, which was a sequel to The Peripheral, which was released on January, 2020.

Xbox Series X Could Offer The Definitive Version Of Cyberpunk 2077, And Here’s Why – Pure Xbox

Our friends over at Eurogamer's Digital Foundry have just delivered a massive helping of Xbox Series X specifications and info, and one of the most exciting pieces of news relates to how the console will handle games produced for older Xbox systems.

We already knew that Microsoft was aiming for full backwards compatibility with all Xbox software, but what Digital Foundry has seen takes things to an entirely new level. Xbox One games, for example, won't run in emulation and will benefit from the full processing power of the Series X; that means your existing games will get a boost in terms of resolution and frame rate. During its time at Microsoft's HQ, Digital Foundry saw Gears of War: Ultimate Edition running at 4K resolution, and came away very impressed indeed.

Microsoft's objective is to apply these enhancements as well as 'auto HDR' to all Xbox titles across the ages which is a show-stopping feature, if you ask us. The other good news? This process is handled by Microsoft's backwards compatibility team, so the developer of the original game doesn't have to lift a finger.

Peggy Lo, compatibility program lead, had this to say:

Hopefully you realise that we are still quite passionate about this. It's a very personal project for a lot of us and we are committed to keep doing this and making all your games look best on Series X.

While the notion of seeing your favourite classic Xbox games running in higher resolutions and with silky-smooth frame rates is enticing enough, it's worth returning to the fact that more recent games are going to really benefit from Series X's raw power. Digital Foundry was shown an updated version of Gears 5 produced in two weeks which featured 60FPS cutscenes, improved contact shadows and ray traced screen-space global illumination.

Coalition technical director Mike Raynor was keen to stress that more optimisation will follow, and that existing Xbox One owners won't have to fork out money for a 'remastered' version of the game:

Gears 5 will be optimised, so the work you've seen today will be there, available at launch on Xbox Series X. The title will support Smart Delivery, so if you already have the title in whatever form you'll be able to get it on Series X for free.

This could be something of a game-changer as the upcoming console war looms ever closer; not only will Xbox One owners benefit from seeing their existing library of games running even better on the Series X, we could see instances where Microsoft's new console provides the best platform to experience the hottest current-gen titles of 2020.

If the rumours of Cyberpunk 2077's poor performance on PS4 and Xbox One are to be believed, the Series X which will offer the ability to drastically improve the performance of the Xbox One version could be the definitive system to play it on this year at least until the PS5 gets it inevitable update of the game, of course, but that might not be until next year, and you might have to pay extra for it.

What do you make of Microsoft's efforts to ensure top-notch backwards compatibility with its existing games? Do you think this will be something that the average person on the street will appreciate, or is the company simply preaching to the converted? Let us know with a comment below.

‘Altered Carbon: Resleeved’ Review: Breezy, bloody and raunchy, the anime is a visual treat for cyberpunk fans – MEAWW

This review is spoiler-free

Season 2 of 'Altered Carbon' wasn't the last we saw of the dystopian cyberpunk drama. Three weeks after the release of the Anthony Mackie-starrer, comes an animated version helmed by 'Cowboy Bebop' writer, writer Dai Sato.

It also makes sense to bring in a more Samurai version of the series as the plot is set in the events between season 1 and 2 and deals with the introduction of Tanaseda Hideki (Played by James Saito in the series, and voiced by Kenji Yamauchi in the anime).

'Reseleeved' encompasses all the elements from the live-action series the generous splattering of blood, the explosive action, raunchy sex and cutting edge-tech. The 90-minute film also makes an attempt to join the storylines from Season 1 and the ending might either spawn a sequel for another animated series.

The plotline is simple: Takeshi Kovacs is given another state-of-the-art combat sleeve and is tasked with protecting a teen Yakuza tattoo artist from CTAC and some really badass ninjas.

Deception has always been one of the elements behind Altered Carbon's success and when Kovacs takes the mission, he realizes there is more to the reason behind the tattoo artist, Holly Togram (voiced by Ayaka Asai) who's hunted by two parties.

In Gena, a CTAC soldier, Kovacs finds an able ally as the duo face-off against a horde of enhanced ninjas to save the girl. Multiple storylines come into play with Gena having her own past as a storyline.

Her story will be a revelation and raises some serious questions about some of the recurring characters in season 2 of the live-action series while Hideki is shown to be one of Kovacs mentors after the supposed death of Quellcrist Falconer.

'Resleeved' may not have the wry humor or the rage-filled broody character of Mackie's Kovacs, but its version of the lead character is heavily modeled on Kinnaman. Be it the insanely jacked physique that clearly defines the hard-worn string musculature or the swagger, it gives an honest shot in showing Kinnaman as an anime character.

Chris Conner's Poe was a revelation. The AI was instrumental in both seasons and in the anime, we get to see Ogai (voiced by Jouji Nakata) who is the owner of the hotel, The Wild Geese. Again, another attempt where we see a Japanese version of Poe who's got some top-notch weaponry as part of the hotel's defense systems.

As far as the antagonists go, the film really keeps things tight and simple making 'Resleeved' a predictable affair. But, it does make up for the mainstream plot with some blitzkrieg action. The fight sequences bring in the feeling of being an active part of an FPS game and almost every ten minutes sees an action sequence.

'Altered Carbon' was ranked highly on Rotten Tomatoes and while the second season did see a dip in the audience score, the animated version promises to win back some fans who were disappointed with the second installment. 'Reserved' is breezy, bloody and aggressive.

Cyberpunk fans can pretty much give this a whirl for the visual treat it is.'Altered Carbon: Resleeved' is available for streaming on Netflix.

Cyberpunk 2077 is at rating agencies around the world – GamesRadar+ AU

Cyberpunk 2077 may have been delayed, but it's just reached an important production milestone - submission to age rating agencies.

CD Projekt Red Head of Studio Adam Badowski took to Twitter to confirm the game has been submitted to agencies like PEGI and ESRB. While the studio awaits a rating, it's working on "polishing technical aspects and playtesting" the long-awaited RPG.

For reference, CD Projekt Red's beloved RPG that contained a fair bit of sex scenes, brothel visits, and beheadings, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, was rated M for Mature by the ESRB and PEGI 18 in Europe. Considering Cyberpunk 2077 will have mo-capped sex scenes, I think it's safe to expect the title to garner a mature rating as well.

However, it's not really about what the game will be rated, as much as it's about the developer reaching such an important milestone especially when you consider the game was initially meant to drop next month. CD Projekt Red announced Cyberpunk 2077's five-month delay back in January, pushing the release date from April 16 to September 17.

While it's clear from Badowski's Tweet that the game is still in need of polish, it's great to see its content is ready for review from age rating agencies. That just means we'll get a cleaner, better-running game when it drops in September, which is especially important now that we know Xbox One players will get an Xbox Series X version of Cyberpunk 2077 for free through Smart Delivery, as GamesRadar+ previously reported.

Simply put, Cyberpunk 2077 is nearing completion, and we couldn't be more excited.

Speaking of, here's the best upcoming games of 2020 (and beyond).

New Cyberpunk 2077 info, meet the Tyger Claws – VG247

As we inch ever so closer to launch, new Cyberpunk 2077 info has started to crop up all over the internet. A lot of it is merely speculation but, occasionally, something slightly more concrete appears.

CD Projekt Red has remained pretty tight-lipped on the subject, which makes the legitimacy of new Cyberpunk 2077 info difficult to assess. However, a recent YouTube video posted by Madqueen Show introduces one of the many gangs that roam Night City: the Tyger Claws (called Tygers Claw in Mike Pondsmiths tabletop RPG, but seemingly renamed for CDPRs adaptation). You can watch the full video below.

The Tyger Claws are a Japanese booster gang in Night City, settled in the district of Westbrook, also known as Japantown, the part of the city where people go when theyre looking for thrills, the video description reads. As they are the protectors of the Japanese community at large, it is thought they are backed up by one of the most powerful megacorporations of Cyberpunk 2077: Arasaka. Apparently the Tyger Claws eschew hi-tech cyber weapons for a more traditional style of combat: martial arts.

There are two main pieces of evidence that support the information in the video. First of all, an artist who goes by the handle Death Burger posted a collection of concept art they apparently worked on for the official Cyberpunk 2077 steelbook. It appeared over atArtStation a few months ago and consists of four different pieces of cover art, each depicting one of Night Citys notorious criminal gangs:Tyger Claws, Valentinos, Maelstrom, and Voodoo Boys.

What further legitimizes this is the presence of a Tyger Claws poster thats currently listed over at CD Projekt Reds official store. Riding out from the heart of Japantown in a psychedelic blur, the Tyger Claws are dead-set on staking claim to fresh territory, the description reads. Word has it theyve already picked out the perfect spot on your walls.

If you want to know more about the Tyger Claws, check out the video embedded above. If youre curious about other Cyberpunky trivia, check out the recent revelation about the Cyberpunk 2077 map, or dig into the new Cyberpunk 2077 info Grimes spilled about her character.

Cyberpunk 2077 map is based on the board games new version – VG247

Hawk-eyed fans recently noticed that the Cyberpunk 2077 map is closer in shape to a newer version of Mike Pondsmiths tabletop RPG.Its already relatively common knowledge that Cyberpunk 2077 is based on Pondsmiths famous tabletop game, but its important to remember Pondsmiths Night City where Cyberpunk 2077 will be set has been iterated on several times over the years. Thats why Redditor Sokk650 recently pulled up an image from the CD Projekt Red forums depicting the Cyberpunk 2077 map.

The boys of CDPRforums finally gave some more looks into the realization I had months ago, but still havent acknowledged one (not so small) fact. Yes this is Morro Bay, where Cyberpunk is located. Yes that space is around 4-8 miles (or something like that), but that is in REAL WORLD SPACE from cyberpunkgame

The question of scale here is another story entirely. Other Reddit users have already spent a significant amount of time discussing this, comparing Night City to GTA Vs Los Santos (although this has proved relatively fruitless thus far, considering people still havent actually played Cyberpunk).

For comparison (mods, dont do this to me, not again, hear me out) Gta Vs map next to LA, that tiny little blip highlighted is Los Santos, a 100 sq mile game world, taking up a little less than 5 miles in scale with real world space. This is why Night City looks so small.Connect the "." Lets disuss from cyberpunkgame

So while scale isnt necessarily important at present, the first post linked above is worth examining for another reason. As RedditorOpfuscapisthelpfully points out in the comments, Pondsmith has created a variety of different Cyberpunk maps over the years. Two of these are depicted below, the first one being a sketch of Morro Bay from roughly 30 years ago.

As you can see, the latter drawing is a more refined version of the first version, where area borders are more easily recognized. The coastline has also been reworked, resulting in an increase to the land mass north of South Night City.

This newer version helps to explain the positioning of areas in the Cyberpunk 2077 map, where South Night City has been replaced by the City Center, which should technically be northwest of where it is. The areas along the coast here have been refined yet again, with the Cyberpunk 2077 map being closer to the second image displayed above than the first, while still doing some iterating of its own on Pondsmiths original.

Its interesting to see what CD Projekt Red is doing differently with its depiction of Night City, but its also worth examining the parts that appear to be the same for example, areas like Pacifica and Heywood seem to be located almost exactly where they are in the tabletop version.

We wont really know what to expect from the Cyberpunk 2077 map until the game launches later this year, but its always worth comparing what we have so far to the source material. If youre interested in exploring further before Cyberpunk 2077 comes out, you can check out Pondsmiths Cyberpunk 2020 over at R. Talsorian Games.

Cyberpunk 2077 is due to launch for PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Google Stadia on September 17, 2020. If youre hungry for more Cyberpunk, Grimes recently leaked her characters role, while people seem to have discovered a cool Easter egg in the Cyberpunk 2077 trailer from E3 2018.

Cyberpunk 2077: Tyger Claws Gang To Be Featured In The Game – Trending News Buzz

Usually, game developers have to choose between either quality or quantity. It is rare for them to deliver on both. That is unless youre CD Projekt Red. Anyone who has played The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt will confirm this. The number of stories packed into that game and the high quality of those stories are simply incredible.

It should come as no surprise, then, that their CD Projekt Reds upcoming Sci-Fi role-playing game, Cyberpunk 2077, is showing similar levels of detail. The lively, beautiful, gang-infested setting of Night City is certain to be a joy to dive into.

We have already seen Maelstrom, the Voodoo Boys, the Animals and a few of these gangs in action. They are far from the only ones that are fighting for control over the streets of Night City, though.

Weve seen teasers and flashes of another gang, named the Tyger Claws, for months now. They have appeared in some concept art and Cyberpunk creator Mike Pondsmith even hinted at a character whose story may involve the gang. They havent appeared in any gameplay footage, however. This led people to wonder if they would end up in the game.

This speculation caught fire when, a couple of weeks ago, CD Projekt Red started selling a poster on their online store featuring the Tyger Claws. YouTube Madqueen Show, who has been covering the game for years now, compiled all the little breadcrumbs into one video to get you up to speed.

The inclusion of the Tyger Claws is a big deal. Each of these gangs brings with them their own sets of stories. Their ties to the Arasaka Corporation open up a whole new dimension for players to explore in the game. Essentially, an official confirmation of their presence would tell us that the game has an added layer of depth to it.

Their presence in Night City wouldnt just affect the story, either. The Tyger Claws prefer close combat and wear light armour, allowing them to move quickly. This presents an interesting gameplay challenge when it comes to fighting against them. A high-powered shotgun might do the trick.

CD Projekt Red has been mum about confirming or denying such speculation. All we can do wait and watch as the release date draws closer.Cyberpunk 2077 is set to come out on September 17th, 2020 on the PS4, Xbox One and PC. It is available for pre-order now.

Altered Carbon Proves Cyberpunk Is as Immortal as Its Lead Character – The Escapist

Altered Carbon has returned to Netflix for its second season.

The series launched in February 2018, adapted from Richard K. Morgans novel of the same name. Morgans novel is regarded as one of the modern classics of cyberpunk science fiction, winning the Philip K. Dick Award for Best Novel in 2003. The novel and series unfold in a future where mankind has harnessed stack technology to allow consciousness to survive the death of a body, offering functional immortality to those wealthy enough to afford it.

Altered Carbon is certainly a lavish production, as one might expect from a high-profile Netflix Original. The project was announced as part of a $5B investment in original content. As ever, Netflix has played coy with the actual numbers, but actor Joel Kinnaman insisted that it cost more than the first three seasons of Game of Thrones. Estimates suggest that each of the first seasons 10 episodes had a budget of between $6M and $7M each.

The shows ambition matches its budget. Writing before the launch of the first season, Morgan asserted that the long-term aim is to produce at least five seasons of the show. This may be optimistic, given that the streaming services preferred length of three seasons per show would line up neatly with the three books in the core Takeshi Kovacs series. Still, there is some indication that Netflix is happy with the show for the moment, announcing a second season only five months after the release of the first.

Much like The Expanse, a television adaptation of Altered Carbon is the kind of project that has only become feasible in the era of streaming giants. It would be too risky a proposition for traditional broadcast television in terms of genre and content, and it would be unlikely to attract a large enough audience to justify its survival if Nielsens viewership estimates are to be trusted. Its budget would place a heavy strain on boutique cable providers like HBO or Showtime. Netflix was the only way forward.

In keeping with the cyberpunk aesthetic, the first season of Altered Carbon is structured as a noir-infused murder mystery playing off the shows central concept. Takeshi Kovacs (Kinnaman) finds himself released from prison at the behest of wealthy philanthropist and entrepreneur Laurens Bancroft (James Purefoy) to investigate a locked-room murder. This mystery is complicated by the fact that Bancroft himself was the victim, his consciousness restored from a backup with no memory of what happened.

The first season of Altered Carbon uses this mystery as a spine to explore its world. The series is obviously inspired by a wealth of classic science fiction sources, from the original Blade Runner to the work of William Gibson, but the series is most interesting in its exploration of the nature of consciousness what happens when a mind moves from body to body, and what are the implications of that? In a world where life is already cheap, what happens when death is removed from the equation?

Altered Carbon doesnt always push its core ideas in the most interesting direction. There is occasionally a sense that the central stack technology is treated as an abstract thought experiment, rather than following it through to its most fundamental conclusions. Still, the series gets a lot of mileage out of the incongruities of the technology, most notably with the body of a simpleminded gangbanger (Matt Biedel) that alternately houses a Latinx grandmother and a local crime boss over the course of the series.

Still, Altered Carbon is a loving cyberpunk homage. It takes great pleasure in the cheesy hard-boiled dialogue associated with the genre. If I were afraid, would you save me, Mr. Kovacs? coos Miriam Bancroft (Kristin Lehman). Kovacs responds, Im not sure you need saving. Kovacs allies with an artificial intelligence that styles itself after Edgar Allan Poe (Chris Conner) and even engages in a deathmatch in a fightdrome operated by the sadistic Carnage (Matt Frewer). Even the seriess delightfully lurid violence and (equal opportunity but still) gratuitous nudity feel like a loving tribute to the genre.

The second season of Altered Carbon offers something of a fresh start for the series. Kovacs has been re-sleeved given a new body which allows for the series to swap leads from Joel Kinnaman to Anthony Mackie. Whereas the first season operated in the style of a futurist film noir, the second season offers a much larger and more consciously epic story, with Kovacs embarking on a journey back to reconnect with his lost love (and rebel leader) Quellcrist Falconer (Rene Elise Goldsberry).

Altered Carbon doesnt reinvent the wheel, but it doesnt have to. At its core, the show is an affectionate celebration of the tropes and conventions of these sorts of pulpy science fiction adventures, with Netflix affording the series a scale with which few television series can compete. As befits its premise, it spins an old genre back up again for another go-round.

The first and second seasons of Altered Carbon are now streaming on Netflix.

Everspace 2 Early Access Release Delayed to Avoid Competition With Cyberpunk 2077 and Outriders – GamingBolt

It wouldnt be wise to directly compete against two sci-fi shooter RPG juggernauts, says the developer.

When it was announced in August of last year, developers Rockfish Games confirmed thatEverspace 2would be entering early access on Steam in the second half of 2020- but those plans have now been postponed because of very interesting reasons.

In a new update share by the developer, it was confirmed thatEverspace 2searly access launch is being delayed to September. The reason? They very openly admit that they dont want to compete directly against the likes ofCyberpunk 2077andOutriders,mammoth AAA games that are both coming out in that window as well.

As an open world sci-fi shooter with RPG elements, Rockfish Games think theres quite a bit of overlap between audiences of these games, and as such, they dont think its wise to directly compete against two sci-fi shooter RPG juggernauts.

Some AAA blockbuster titles will hit our initial Steam Early Access release date, the developer wrote. The hotly-anticipated open-world sci-fi shooter RPG Cyberpunk 2077 was recently pushed back to September, plus the brand new sci-fi looter shooter RPG Outriders from Square Enix has just been announced to release the same month, too. Obviously, there is quite an overlap between those audiences and ours, so we have decided it wouldnt be wise to directly compete against two sci-fi shooter RPG juggernauts, leaving not much room for any other sci-fi shooter coming out at the same time.

Considering all those new challenges, we had to make a tough decision about postponing the EVERSPACE 2 launch on Steam Early Access, now aiming for early December this year.

Meanwhile, the games closed alpha is also being pushed back as a result, now into late May, while the closed beta will now be in August.

Consequently, were also pushing the closed Alpha back to the end of May and the closed Beta to August, the update reads. We will reach out to backers with creative rewards towards the end of this year.

Rockfish Games also says that the studio is in a financially comfortable position, which means development onEverspace 2is proceeding as planned and hasnt been affected by this.

Even if this is just a strategic decision to mitigate commercial risks when major market conditions change, we are fully aware that some of you wont be too happy about this, but we hope for your understanding, Rockfish wrote. Thankfully, were in a financially comfortable position, so the project itself is not at risk, and we are developing the game internally as planned. This extra time also means well have more content for you to enjoy in the closed Alpha, Beta, and Early Access builds.

Everspace 2is currently in development for PC, PS4, and Xbox One. You can get more info on the game in our interview with the developer through here.

Altered Carbon’s Stars on Love and Getting a Happy Ending in Cyberpunk – Gizmodo

Takeshi Kovacs (Anthony Mackie) and Quellcrist Falconer (Rene Elise Goldsberry) share an intimate moment. Image: Netflix

In the world of cyberpunk fiction, is there such a thing as a truly happy ending? For the second season of Altered Carbon, the answer is: kind of. As the series moves from explorations of identity to interpersonal relationships, every character is trying to figure out the role of love in their complicated and sometimes immortal lives.

Sometimes we do want a happy ending. Sometimes we want to see a functional relationship survive, Simone Missick told io9.

When we spoke with some of the cast of Altered Carbon season two at a recent press junket, there was one phrase on everybodys lips: This is a love story. That statement largely points to the relationship between Takeshi Kovacs (Anthony Mackie) and Quellcrist Falconer (Rene Elise Goldsberry), as this season is about Takeshis search for his long-lost love. But its not just a single love story, its everyones. Keep in mind: This post contains spoilers through the end of season two.

Every main character is exploring what love means to them in a world where people can live forever through a digital consciousnessif theyre even alive at all, as is the case with Poe (Chris Conner) and fellow AI Dig 301 (Dina Shihabi), who develop a relationship built on their intellectual connection. In the case of humans who strive so hard to live forever, accumulating power and wealth to serve those ends, what space is there to open up to others or earn their affection in return? Thats the big question behind Danica Harlan (Lela Loren) and her father, who she had killed so she could take over.

Her father, Konrad, has been a leader for 300 years. He has raised her and reared her to be entirely in his image, to be geared for his positionand yet he wont ever step down, Loren said. Its almost like she has no other choice but to kill him, because you have this whole generation of children with these parents that never move on. In a weird way, I do think she loves her father, but she loves herself more.

Danica really loves autonomy and freedom, she added. She wants to lead by herself. Does she love people? Mmm, not that much.

The main love story of the season is between Takeshi and Quellcrist, but not in the way you might think. During season one, Takeshi (then played by Joel Kinnaman) had visions of his girlfriend guiding him along his pathbut that wasnt the real Quellcrist, nor was it an accurate portrayal of their relationship. The real Quellcrist is a tragic hero, bent but not broken from years of being trapped in a cave with nothing but her guilty conscience to keep her company (not to mention shes sharing her stack with an alien getting revenge over the colonization of Harlans World). Shes determined to right the wrongs of her past by destroying the technology shed invented. Takeshis goal may have been Quellcrist, but he was not hers. He is a distraction. Even their major sex scene revealed that, as explained by Goldsberry.

The love moment that they have in season two is really her when she is weak, when she needs help. But when she comes to herself in full strength, she doesnt allow herself a moment with him before she moves back on task and back on mission. I thought that was surprising to me that she would be that strong, Goldsberry told io9. I mean, she didnt really have much time, she didnt really have much choice. But probably the romantic in Rene wanted her to take a minute and just tell him that she loved him.

Taskeshi does have other people he cares about in his lifelike Poe, whos become his companion in the second season. Carrera described them as having a bromance, saying their dynamic in season two is that of an old married couple. But there are some uncomfortable, unsettling ways Takeshi treats his friend. Poe spends most of the season struggling with system degradation that risks compromising Takeshis mission, so he continually admonishes the AI to reboot. Poe doesnt want to because it would mean losing his memories, but that doesnt stop Takeshi from lashing out at him about it, over and over. We asked Carrera whether he would describe their relationship as healthy.

Codependency is something that we all struggle with, so there is definitely some codependency in this relationship. But as he says, Youre gonna get me killed and youre gonna get us killed, he told us. And its a struggle for both to figure out where to go next because theres no answer when youre looking for love.

However, the bigger non-Quellcrist relationship for Takeshi was with, surprisingly, Colonel Ivan Carrera (Torben Liebrecht). Carrera is the latest incarnation of Jaeger, the man who recruited Takeshi into CTAC to become a super-soldier, and he illegally re-sleeved a younger, OG version of Takeshi (Will Yun Lee) into a recreation of his original body. Even though Carrera is objectively a terrible persona warmonger who tries to keep the rebellion on Harlans World alive just so hes not put back on icehe sees himself as a father and loves Takeshi like a son. This explains his need to recreate the Takeshi he knew and cared about, and makes it hard for him to recognize the true Takeshi whod long moved beyond him.

If there is a point where he has to stay on ice forever, what will remain? Whats the footprint that he has left on this Earth? You want to have something that other people inherit from you. Even if its only the positive memory that they have of you, Liebrecht said. He saw Takeshi Kovacs as the person he could call in and raise in a way within the set of values that he believes in. And it hurts him all the more to see that everything that he has to offer is not enough for Kovacs.

Carreras love story with Takeshi isnt one that ends happily. He dies having lost not just one, but two surrogate sons (in the form of old and new Takeshi). But in a show like Altered Carbon, death is not the end. Theres still a place for Carrera to come back in the future, something Liebrecht said hed love to do if given the opportunity (though considering how easily the show moves characters from body to body, that isnt a guarantee).

In the end, Quellcrist chooses her mission over her relationship and Takeshi dies in her place to destroy the Elder technology threatening Harlans World. It gives her the space to go forward and become the rebellions leader once again. While its not a true, Disney fairy-tale ending, it is happy-ish if you look at it from a certain point of view. Takeshi loved Quellcrist so much he sacrificed himself for herand now hes serving the same role she did in the first season, an invisible presence guiding her on her quest. His love is still with her.

However, one happy endingone no one expected, including Missick herselfwas the one with Trepp and her family. During most of the season, Trepp is in conflict with her wife, Myka (Sharon Taylor), who lost her career as an archaelogue and got a job in a bar to support their family. Their son is on his second sleeve after stepping on a landmine and the lease payments are piling up. Mykas made sacrifices but cant understand why Trepp, whos spending a lot of their money searching for her brother, wont do the same.

Eventually, things come to a head when Myka and their son are kidnapped. Myka is doing some archaeological work for Danica to keep them alive, but Trepp is determined to come in guns blazing and save them. Trepps father and brother didnt make it, meaning her wife and son are all she has left. The whole confrontation is tense and comes across like Trepp is going to perform the ultimate sacrifice and die to save her family. This was something Missick was afraid of the whole timeespecially given the history of the Bury Your Gays trope, or the tendency to kill off characters in non-cishet relationships. Luckily, that didnt happen.

I kept asking, I was like: Do I die? No youre not going to die. Im like, Are you sure Im not going to die? Because of that same thought [the Bury Your Gays trope], Missick said. Altered Carbon season two is so much about a love story, and its the main love story of Takeshi and Quell. But then you also see this love story between Trepp and her wife and her family and her son...The fact that that love story is to remain intact is, in a way, a beautiful thing.

Youd be hard-pressed to find a lot of hope at the end of the season, as most of the characters are killed, but looking forward theres a lot of it to be found, even through the smoky veneer of the cyberpunk genre. Trepp has her family and is working out of her fathers augmentation shop, Poe and Dig 301 are running their hotel, OG Takeshi is staying on Harlans World to help the cause, and Quellcrist has her memories of Takeshi to keep her company on her journey. The story even ends with a hint that Takeshi isnt gone for good, as Poe had saved a back-up of his stack before rebooting.

Happy endings in cyberpunk arent an easy thing, because the nature of the genre is to serve as a warning for the future. But if theres one thing Altered Carbon has wanted to teach us, its that love will prevaileven across galaxies and centuries. Its no surprise the season ends in sunshine, signifying a bright future for the people whove lived in the shadows of gods.

Mediatonic: 100 players became this talismanic number we decided to aim for and two years ago was the standard for all Battle Royale titles.

Fall Guys isnt strictly a Battle Royale game. But in the world of video games, having a strong elevator pitch to grab peoples attention is

Hey, where are you going? Get back here. Weve not finished!

See? Getting off to a slick start and having a strong elevator pitch to grab peoples attention is crucial. There are thousands of video games released every year and attention spans are worse than ever. Being able to sell someone on your concept in a matter of seconds can be the difference between success and failure, so a simple formula of its like X, crossed with Y or what if X was a Battle Royale game? becomes a simple, effective way to get your idea across.

So while Fall Guys isnt technically a Battle Royale, the elevator pitch might use the 100 people battle it out, but there can be only one winner motif to illustrate its structure.

Somewhere along the line were going to blame Brendan Greene it was determined that Battle Royale games would involve 100 players. Its a weird one, because the movie that inspired it all Kinji Fukasakus Battle Royale featured a bus full of schoolchildren, just a single class. That cant be more than 30, 40 kids? Meanwhile, Suzanne Collins The Hunger Games which she swears she didnt copy from Battle Royale, honest features just 24 children, two from a dozen districts in a dystopian North America. But 100 became the arbitrary standard in Battle Royale games, because Brendan said so. (And then Fortnite Battle Royale copied his homework.)

In a post on its development blog, Mediatonic has announced that it will be buck the trend and drop the Fall Guys player count from 100 to 60.

When we first started working on Fall Guys we had to ballpark our player count based purely on what feltright to us, says Joe Walsh, game designer at Mediatonic, and 100 players became this talismanic number we decided to aim for. 100 players, 1 winner instantly gives players a sense of the mayhem theyre going to deal with, and two years ago was the standard for all Battle Royale titles (Fall Guys isnta battle royale per s, but when explaining the game for the first time it helps to draw those parallels).

Once we started prototyping gameplay we quickly we found that players couldnt really tell the difference between 50 and 100 contestants. Regularly wed ask players how many Fall Guys did that feel like you were playing with? and their response was often twice as high as the actual number that were in-game with them. It turned out that we didnt need as many players as we thought to create the crowds we wanted the gameplay to include.

We also began to find that 100 players made even our simplest levels too crowded and ultimately less fun. Players would lose their Fall Guy in giant bundles trying to fit through small gaps, and if we made our levels bigger they were too large and cavernous to feel cohesive. Once we reduced player counts to 60 we found the horde of Fall Guys still invoked all the craziness we wanted, but without any of the frustration and confusion that the extra 40 Fall Guys brought with them.

So there you have it. After extensive playtesting Mediatonic determined that, Fall Guys plays better with 60 players than 100. It also brings other benefits, including reduced matchmaking times, and giving everyone a better chance of winning. (Odds of 1 in 60 are better than 1 in 100, obviously.)

Were not phased by the reduction in numbers, to be honest. We played Fall Guys with a handful of people in a soft play area in Devolver Digitals car park near E3 2019, and we had a lovely time of it!

Cyberpunk 2077 Wiki

Cyberpunk 2077 Wiki will guide you with all information on weapons, armor, quests, perks, romance, NPCs, maps, walkthrough and more!

Cyberpunk 2077 is an open world, narrative-driven role-playing game set in the universe of the classic 1988 tabletop RPG - Cyberpunk 2020. Cyberpunk 2077 is set 57 years on from the tabletop game, in the dystopian Night City in California.

Night City in Cyberpunk 2077 is an open world with six unique regions: the very corporate 'City Center'; 'Watson', a unique and varied mix of Asian cultures, the formercorporate estate is now home to many immigrant residents; Westbrook District, featuring the tourist-orientedJapantown and home to many wealthy elites; Pacifica, the gang-ridden slums; wealthy but gang-plagued Heywood; and Santo Domingo, the industrial district. Voted in 2077 as "the worst place to live in America", it is the central location to Cyberpunk 2077.

Play as V, an ultra-agile cyberninja in the story-driven landscape of Cyberpunk 2077 and fulfill your destiny in this heavily interactive environment.

Cyberpunk 2077 will be releasing on PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

Release date was confirmed 16/04/2020 at E3 2019 and presented by Keanu Reeves.

Night City, California. Year 2077.

The world is broken. MegaCorps manage every aspect of life from the top floors of their sky-scraping fortresses. Down below, the streets are run by drug pushing gangs, tech hustlers, and illegal braindance slingers. The in-between is where decadence, sex and pop culture mix with violent crime, extreme poverty and the unattainable promise of the American Dream.

You are V, a cyberpunk. In a world of cyber-enhanced street warriors, tech-savvy netrunners and corporate life-hackers, today is your first step to becoming an urban legend.

The game follows the story of V a hired gun on the rise in Night City, the most violent and dangerous metropolis of the corporate-ruled future. A robust character creator will allow players to choose V's gender, visual appearance, character class, as well as historical background all of which may influence the shape of the game.

Cyberpunk 2077 blends first-person shooter (FPS) elements with those of the role-playing-game (RPG) genre, making it something of a hybrid. While some cutscenes and driving portions switch out to a third-person perspective, most gameplay is first-person, and with both a lot of shooting and a strong focus on character progression and advancement as well as exploration and character interaction,it's an elegant example of blending two genres.

With dozens of hours of main story arc quests, and many more of additional activities, there's always something to see and do in Night City. Players will experience all of it entirely through V's eyes, with an interactive real-time dialogue system that gives them greater narrative agency. A fully interactive environment with no load times between regions, Night City provides an immersive RPG experience. Fast-paced gunplay, high-speed car chases on the freeway and situations that call for a slightly sneakier approach combine to create gameplay that spoils the player with options. A variety of environments, from tight corridors to wide open spaces, makes every fight and every quest a new obstacle to tackle.

Players assume the role of V, an ultra-agile cyberninja. With full character customization and an exceptional range of weapons (both guns and other options, and even non-lethals) and playstyles available, it is up to the player how they combine abilities and equipment to complete quests and take out enemies. Bionic augmentations and technologically enhanced weapons, such as an optical implant which confers the ability to see enemies through solid objects, or a rifle which tracks enemies, assist the player in their exploration of Night City and completion of quests.

Returning in Cyberpunk 2077 is CD PROJEKT RED's hallmark of choices and consequences. As they make their way through the streets of Night City and its sky-scraping megabuildings, players will face difficult decisions that will ripple through the entire game.

A fully interactive environment gives players the opportunity to affect many things around them, sometimes with unexpected consequences to the further story and subsequent gameplay.

Cyberpunk literature class looks at heavy subjects through the lense of science fiction – Troy Tropolitan

by

Rakshak Adhikari

Staff Writer

Troy students interested in contemporary science fiction can take a selected topics online class on Post-Colonial/Post-cyberpunk novels offered by the Department of English.

Jonathan Lewis, an associate professor of English and the instructor for the course, said it is an intense nine-week class with a heavy reading load that focuses on works published after the age of high cyberpunk after about 1988.

Lewis said the course is expected to enhance close reading skills and recognizing broad patterns and connections in reading.

According to Lewis, the course also includes several texts readers may consider vulgar and profane. The text will include themes like sexual assault, prostitution, child abuse, incest and genocide, some of which readers my find troubling and even objectionable.

It is the reality of the works, Lewis said. Since 1945, we have been living in a post genocidal world and the greater awareness of personal level of abuse are being more and more commonly understood, and to pretend that those topics are not a part of contemporary science fiction is nave.

Sierra Behring, a senior interdisciplinary studies major from Chesapeake, Virginia, said she chose to take the selected topics course because she enjoyed taking classes from the same professor in the science fiction genre.

According to Behring, while these novels include tough material, they are able to address some of the most atrocious behavior and societal depravity in a way that pushes discussion and casts vision.

Sci-fi is a great way to imagine the future in both the good and the bad, Behring said. If I dont like the way the bad is portrayed, then becoming active in topics of civil rights, environmentalism and government are a good place to start.

Marcella Reynolds, a senior English major from Sacramento, California, said that as a black female, the discussion of African-futurism drew her to this class.

What is really crazy is the more horrific the reading assignments became, my intrigue only heightened, Reynolds said. I loved these readings because I could imagine myself in the most horrific battles, yet emerging victorious.

All of these readings show the marginalized breaking through impossible situations and coming out stronger.

According to James Davis, an assistant professor of English who also specializes in science fiction literature, there is always talk about how science fiction is valuable for predicting where mankind is going in the future.

Well, that does happen occasionally, but as Ursula LeGuin (a science fiction and fantasy author) said, Science fiction is not about predicting the future; it is about examining the world we are living in now, Davis said.

According to Davis, the value of examining mankind and his problems by setting the stories in another reality, a reality without the obscuring prejudices and clichs we use in our everyday lives, is one of clarity.

The course is offered every year in Term 3, and the only prerequisite is a grade of C or better in English 1102.
