Comets Roll Past Stars 5-2

February 18, 2015 - American Hockey League (AHL) Utica Comets UTICA, N.Y. - The Comets kicked off their season-high five-game homestand by defeating the Texas Stars 5-2 Wednesday night at The Utica Memorial Auditorium.

The Comets (30-14-5-1) scored two power-play goals for the eighth en route to their 30th win this season. The power-play goals were the first power-play goals allowed by the Texas Stars in the past 15 road games for the Stars.

The Stars (23-17-10-1) were unable to add to their three-game winning streak and were stumped five times by the Comets' penalty kill, which entered the game ranked as the third best in the entire league.

Brandon DeFazio (2-1-3) who scored two goals and his first empty-net goal this year was credited as the first star of the game. Bobby Sanguinetti (1-2-3), Dustin Jeffrey (1-0-1) and Brendan Gaunce (1-0-1) all found the back of net as well to help push the Comets' points total to 66.

Sanguinetti got it all started for the Comets after he scored his 13th goal of the season just 37 seconds into the game. The play developed as Will Acton took a shot on the blocker side of Stars goaltender Jussi Rynnas as he battled with defenseman Cameron Gaunce. After a quick tussle, Acton beat Gaunce to the rebound and swung around to the backside of the net as he looked for the next course of action. Once Acton saw a passing lane to Sanguinetti, he dished it to the center hashmarks where Sanguinetti banged it home to give the Comets the 1-0 lead just 37 seconds into the opening stanza. DeFazio was credited with the secondary assist.

After some back and forth play, the Stars found the equalizer towards the tail end of the period at 13:36. Travis Morin initiated the play by making a pass along the blue line to Scott Glennie, who then ripped a shot off on net from the right point. Vision was an issue for Jacob Markstrom as Jesse Root was screening in front. Once the puck reached the crease, Root tipped the puck into the mesh past the Comets netminder. The play was reviewed as Markstrom argued goaltender inference; however, the goal stood and the Stars were credited with the 1-1 equalizer.

With a little more than a minute left in the opening period, the Comets took back their one-goal lead on the power play following a slashing call on Matej Stransky. Confusion ensued in front of the net after Sanguinetti lifted one towards the goal. Alex Friesen got his stick on the puck but Jeffrey followed through with the play as he snuck it past Rynnas for the power-play goal and the 2-1 lead.

Just as they did at the beginning of the first, the Comets did it again at the start of the second. Just 17 seconds after the puck was dropped, Darren Archibald streaked in towards the net and brought Rynnas to the far left side of the net as he shot the puck. Little did Rynnas know that the puck would make its way around the backside of the net and on to DeFazio's stick before the Finnish netminder could slide to the other post. DeFazio popped it in on the open side to give the Comets a two-goal lead.

A hooking call on Julius Honka dug an even deeper hole for the Stars as the Comets capitalized on their second power play chance of the night. Gaunce found his eighth goal of the season after receiving the puck from Hunter Shinkaruk. Gaunce slipped a wrist shot through the legs of Rynnas for the power-play goal and the commanding 4-1 lead. Travis Ehrhardt also received an assist on the play.

The third period didn't see as much action as the first two periods, but it was enough to keep the Comets on top for the rest of the game.

Star Buzzed Earth During Neanderthal Times

Seventy thousand years ago, when modern humans were on the verge of migrating from Africa and before Neanderthals died out, an alien star flew through the outer reaches of the solar system.

Passing less than a light-year from Earth, the flyby was the closest stellar near-miss identified so far, scientists reported Tuesday in Astrophysical Journal Letters.

Ordinarily too dim for human eyes to perceive, the small red dwarf may have flared up during its extremely close brush with Earth, making it visible to early humans if they chanced to look skyward at the right moment.

When scientists reconstructed the past orbit of the star, known as Scholz's star, they found that it once came within 0.8 light-years (roughly eight trillion kilometers) of Earth's solar system. That distance puts it within the outer reaches of the Oort cloud, a vast, faraway realm populated by trillions of comets.

Why It Matters

Though it's in a cosmic blind spot and has never been seen directly, the Oort cloud is thought to host an enormous number of comets, some of which already visit the inner solar system with regularity. But many more of these comets could come flying inward if something massive-say, a passing star-were to approach and perturb the cloud.

A hailstorm of comets could have catastrophic consequences for life on Earth, so astronomers hope to figure out how common these close encounters are. So far, it doesn't look like we have to worry: The next closest stellar approach is forecast to occur between 240,000 and 470,000 years from now, and should avoid the Oort cloud.

The Big Picture

The recently discovered star, which is part of a binary system with a brown dwarf, stood out because of its peculiar motion in the sky. With scant sideways movement, it appeared to be zooming either directly away from-or directly toward-Earth.

The closest star to our sun today is Proxima Centauri, which is about 4.2 light-years away, or about five times farther away than Scholz's star passed.

Comets downed by St. Louis CC

Ralph Pokorny/Daily Mail/ Cottey's Emily Allen goes up for two late in the second half of Saturday's game with the St. Louis Community College Archers.

The Cottey Comets felt little love during their Valentine's Day game when they fell to the St. Louis Community College Archers at home, 69-46.

The Comets found themselves in a hole early in the game after the Archers hurried to a 13-2 lead, with the Comets attempting few shots in that time. But the Comets found their rhythm and scored the next 11 points to tie the game halfway through the first half.

A late surge by the Archers led to the Comets trailing 28-21 at halftime.

That deficit increased in the second half when the Archers improved on their offense -- scoring 41 points, while hammering the Comets on the glass, in addition to taking advantage of Cottey's personal fouls, with center Emily Allen eventually fouling out.

"We knew coming into it St. Louis was a good team," Comets head coach Stephanie Beason said of the Region's top-seeded Archers.

Earlier in the season, the Comets lost to the Archers on the road by 28 points. Beason said since then her team has focused on things such as rebounding, playing under pressure, getting open and decreasing turnovers.

"I think we did a much better job," Beason said. "But there's always room for improvement."

The Comets have just a few regular season games remaining to continue to improve as they face North Central Missouri College and then MCC- Penn Valley Thursday, both home games for the Comets. Cottey and Penn Valley are both vying for the Region 16 third seed.

Sydney Rose led the Comets with 13 points, while forward Linsey Denney added 11. Deborah Holcomb scored game-high 24 points for the Archers.

Comets Can't Tame 'Dogs Offense in 7-5 Loss

February 16, 2015 - American Hockey League (AHL) Utica Comets A wild twelve goal game did not go the Utica Comets way as the Hamilton Bulldogs won 7-5 Monday afternoon at the FirstOntario Centre in Hamilton, ON. 12 different players scored goals during the contest.

Will Acton (1-1-2), Darren Archibald (1-1-2), Dustin Jeffrey (1-1-2), and Alexandre Grenier (0-2-2) all enjoyed two-point games for the Comets. Travis Ehrhardt (1-0-1) and Bobby Sanguinetti (1-0-1) recorded goals for Utica.

It did not take long for the Bulldogs to stake an early lead. Just 1:27 into the game rookie Daniel Carr netted his 15th goal of the year. The play started deep in the Comets zone. From the corner, Sven Andrighetto connected on a pass to Bryan Allen at the top of the circle. Joacim Eriksson had an answer for Allen's blast, but the rebound found Carr's stick who slipped it past the sprawled out goaltender for the early 'Dogs lead.

The Comets tied it up just under ten minutes later. Darren Archibald dug the puck out from a scrum along the boards and passed it to a streaking Grenier. Grenier fired a shot on goal that was denied by Condon, but Acton was there to bury the rebound into the back of the net, and tie the game at one.

The tie did not last long as the Bulldogs got the lead back for good exactly thirty seconds later. A turnover on the breakout led to a two-on-one for the Bulldogs. Eriksson fended off Hamilton's first attempt, and directed the rebound to behind the net. Gabriel Dumont quickly collected the puck and passed it behind the net to Jake Dowell, who quickly fed the puck to Nick Sorkin in the slot. A quick flick of the wrist later, and the Bulldogs led 2-1.

A little over four minutes into the second period the Bulldogs extended their lead to 3-1. Connor Crisp curled across the faceoff dot and slipped a backhand pass to Sahir Gill who was positioned on the goal line to Eriksson's short side. Gill took a quick step in and flipped a backhand over Eriksson's glove for the goal. Dumont picked up a secondary assist on the goal.

The scoring madness continued 57 seconds later when Darren Archibald scored his seventh of the season. The Comets broke into the Bulldogs zone on three-on-two. Acton curled up along the hashmarks which drew a defenseman towards him. Acton tapped a pass through the defender to a hard charging Archibald who ripped a quick wrist shot over the glove of Condon. Brandon DeFazio recorded an assist on the goal.

Exactly sixty seconds later the Bulldogs had their two-goal lead back, for a short while anyways. Rookie sensation Charles Hudon, from the corner, took a feed from Andrighetto and cut across the goal line. Defenseman Bobby Shea noticed the slot was left unattended and broke in hard. From there he one-timed the pass from Hudon past the left leg pad of Eriksson to re-establish the Bulldogs two-goal lead.

Dustin Jeffrey drew the Comets back to within one 38 seconds later. Alex Grenier won the faceoff back to defenseman Kent Huskins who passed it over to Dustin Jeffrey at the top of the circle. Jeffrey wristed a shot on goal that squeaked through the five-hole of Condon to bring the score to 4-3.

In what seemed like the longest amount of game time in between goals, Bryan Allen regained the Bulldogs two-goal lead. After Kane Lafranchise broke up a two-on-one Bulldogs rush, Andrighetto corralled the puck and connected with Hudon. Hudon found Allen all alone at the point for a slapshot that pinged off the crossbar and across the goal line for a 5-3 Bulldogs lead.

'Dogs Power past Comets 7-5

February 16, 2015 - American Hockey League (AHL) Hamilton Bulldogs HAMILTON, ONT. - The Hamilton Bulldogs (25-19-6-0) had seven goals from seven different scorers in a 7-5 win over the Utica Comets (29-14-5-1) at FirstOntario Centre on Monday afternoon. The offensive outburst marked the first time the 'Dogs have put up seven markers in a game since Feb. 19, 2012, when they defeated the Rochester Americans 7-3.

Hamilton had multi-point games from forwards Sven Andrighetto (one goal, three assists), Gabriel Dumont (one goal, two assists), Charles Hudon (three assists) and Jake Dowell (two assists), as well as defenceman Bryan Allen (one goal, one assist).

The scoring started just 1:27 into the first period when Bulldogs forward Daniel Carr found a rebound off a point shot by Allen and slid it past Comets netminder Joacim Eriksson. Carr's team co-leading 15th goal of the season was also assisted by Andrighetto.

Utica got on the board at 11:01 of the opening frame when forward Will Acton dangled one past Hamilton goaltender Mike Condon. Forwards Alexandre Grenier and Darren Archibald collected assists.

Just 30 seconds later, 'Dogs forward Nick Sorkin finished off a perfect passing play around the Comets goal with Dowell and Dumont with his sixth goal of the season from the slot to give Hamilton a 2-1 lead, which they held through the end of the first period.

The middle frame saw a seven-goal eruption - four goals by the Bulldogs and three by the Comets - which left the 'Dogs ahead 6-4 after 40 minutes.

For Hamilton, forward Sahir Gill notched his third goal of the season at 4:16, defenceman Bobby Shea tallied his first of the year at 6:13, Allen potted his first of 2014-15 at 8:31 and Andrighetto buried his 11th of the season to cap off Hamilton's second-period offence at 12:24. For Utica, Archibald, forward Dustin Jeffrey and defenceman Bobby Sanguinetti replied in the second stanza. Five of the seven second-period goals came in a 4:15 span before the period was nine minutes old.

Comets defenceman Travis Ehrhardt made it a 6-5 game at 8:11 of the third period, assisted by forwards Alex Friesen and Nicklas Jensen.

Dumont ripped a shorthanded, empty-net goal from the defensive zone for his team co-leading 15th goal of the season with four seconds to go to seal the 7-5 win for Hamilton. Dowell had the only assist.

Condon made 27 saves on 32 shots for the Bulldogs in the win, while Eriksson stopped 15 of 21 shots faced for the Comets in the loss.
