Canberra cricket legend Peter Solway played a massive role in the Comets' past. Now coach Mark Higgs is hoping he has played a role in shaping their future.

Grenfell's Henry Hunt will make his debut for the Comets against a NSW second XI at Warwick Farm in Sydney on Monday that could contain former international cricketers Ben Rohrer and Trent Copeland.

Two years agoSolway put the 18-year-old in contact with coach Kyle Piper to get involved with the ACT under-17s after Solway spotted him at a NSW Combined High Schools carnival at Penrith in 2012.

Hunt then spent a couple of years commuting from Grenfell to Canberra for cricket until he finished high school.

Now he is studying exercise and sports science at the University of Canberra and lives in Bruce with his sister Clare, who plays soccer for the ACT Academy of Sport.

While Hunt will make his debut for the Comets next week, he played for the ACT against Afghanistan in a pre-Cricket World Cup friendly at Manuka Oval in September.

He didn't think he would be as nervous making his Futures League debut as he was that day.

"That game I was nervous, I didn't know many of the players," Hunt said.

Unusual sungrazer comet passes near sun, survives

The non-group stargazer comet as seen by SOHO. (Credit: NASA)

Chuck Bednar for redOrbit.com @BednarChuck

An unusual comet was spotted by the NASA/ESA Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) as it travelled near the sun late last week, and unlike most other comets that make such a voyage, this one actually lived to tell the tale.

According to the US space agency, these types of comets are known as sungrazers and typically evaporate in the intense sunlight. However, this recently spotted comet made it to within 2.2 million miles of the sun and was actually able to survive the journey intact.

[STORY: Sungrazing comet: wrong place, wrong time]

Thats not the only thing about the comet that caught NASAs attention, though. Not only was it a sungrazer, it is what is known as a non-group comet, meaning that it does not belong to any known family of comets. The majority of comets observed by SOHO are members of the Kreutz family, all of which had separated from the same giant comet centuries ago.

Comet me bro!

Theres a half-decent chance that ground observers might be able to detect it in the coming weeks, explained Karl Battams, a solar scientist at the Naval Research Lab in Washington, DC. But its also possible that events during its trip around, the sun will cause it to die fairly fast.

Since it first launched in 1995, SOHO has discovered 2,875 comets, making it the pre-eminent comet-locating spacecraft of all time, according to NASA. However, it observed only a handful of non-group comets (such as this new one) each year, the agency added.

The Sungrazer Project explains that these types of comets have been observed for hundreds of years, dating back at least to the late 1880s. There is no formal definition of what a sungrazing comet is, and to date no comet has ever been seen hitting the photosphere (or solar surface). The closest sungrazers typically come pass within 50,000 kilometers of the sun.

MASL Weekly – Week 18

February 25, 2015 - Major Arena Soccer League (MASL) Comets Complete Regular Season MASL-terpiece

2/25/15 - The Missouri Comets put an exclamation point on their perfect season with a 17-1 rout of the Tacoma Stars, finishing the regular season 20-0.

Leo Gibson scored the first four and the last three goals of the game and finished with a league record 12 points (eight goals, four assists). Danny Waltman allowed a season-low one goal to improve to 17-0, breaking Jesus Flores's old record of 16 wins set last year.

The Comets won their division by seven games over the Milwaukee Wave and won their games by an average margin of 7.2 goals per game. The Comets scored a league-high 12 goals per game and had the fourth best defense, allowing 4.8 goals per game. The Comets were number one on the power play, converting 63.27% of opportunities and their penalty killing unit was fourth best at 72.97%.

Gibson led the league in goals (48) and set records for assists (45) and points (93). Vahid Assadpour finished fourth with 61 points and Bryan Perez was 12th with 44 points. From the back, John Sosa (3rd), Brian Harris (4th), Alain Matingou (6th) and Andre Braithwaite (12th) finished among the league leaders in scoring by defenders.

In their three biggest challenges, the Comets rallied from 5-2 down to beat the Milwaukee Wave 9-7 on November 15. On New Year's Eve the Comets allowed the Wave to tie the game with less than one second left and in overtime a Bato Radoncic shot was stopped by an intentional Sosa handball, but the Wave failed to score on the penalty shootout and the Comets eventually won the game on shootouts. On January 25 the Monterrey Flash held a 7-6 lead until Missouri tied the game with 17 seconds left and won in overtime.

Going back to their tenure in the MISL, the Comets have won 25 straight regular season games.

MASL Team of the Week

GK - Danny Waltman, Missouri Comets

This is Waltman's first team of the week selection this season. The Comets finished the season 20-0 and Waltman played a total of 1006:45 minutes this season and broke the record for most wins in a season (17) in which he recorded a total of 236 saves, 10 of them on Sunday. He allowed only one goal against the Tacoma Stars and has a .744 save percentage.

Acton's Two-Goal Night Lifts Comets past Bulldogs

February 24, 2015 - American Hockey League (AHL) Utica Comets UTICA, N.Y. - The Utica Comets (32-15-5-1) got back to their winning ways Tuesday night after they trampled over the Hamilton Bulldogs (26-21-7-0) 5-2 at The Utica Memorial Auditorium. With the win the Comets widened their division lead over the Bulldogs to 11 points.

Will Acton (2-0-2) applied his scoring touch in his second two-goal night of the season for the Comets and was awarded the first star of the game. Brandon DeFazio (1-2-3) led the way with three points en route to second star honors. Joacim Eriksson put on a performance in his first start since allowing six goals vs. the Bulldogs on Feb. 16. The Swedish netminder stopped 30 of the 32 shots the Bulldogs had taken on him.

The Comets kicked off the game's scoring just over a minute into the second period. Dustin Jeffrey made it all happen for the Comets after winning the offensive zone face-off at the right dot. Once the puck wash pushed off to John Negrin, the Utica defensemen fed it over to Travis Ehrhardt at the point who in turn demolished the puck and buried it past the glove hand of Bulldogs' Mike Condon to give the Comets the first goal of the game at 1:58.

The face-off strategy continued to work for the Comets as they drove the puck towards the net right off the dot. At 8:13 Alexandre Grenier obtained possession of the puck off another offensive zone face-off, but this time at the left dot. With a quick pass across the blue paint, Jensen found it on the opposite side and banged it in for the two-goal lead.

Just under two minutes later the Bulldogs scored from the top of the slot off of what looked like a routine shot from Daniel Carr. Nevertheless, the puck went past Eriksson's glove hand to make it a 2-1 game. Morgan Ellis was credited with the only assist on the Bulldogs firs goal of the game.

The Comets regained their two-goal lead back when Acton and DeFazio found themselves rushing into the offensive zone on a 2-on-1 at 15:44. DeFazio decided to make a saucer pass over the stick of a sprawling Bulldog defensemen, which gave Acton the chance to bury the one-timer past Condon's glove hand for the 3-1 lead and his first goal of the game. Darren Archibald tallied the secondary assist.

As they headed into the third period, the goals continued to roll in including Acton's second of the game at 13:01. The short but sweet play began with a shot from DeFazio, which put it in front of Condon's legs. Acton, who was sitting patiently in the crease saw it through and poked the rubber into the open hole to give the Comets a three-goal edge.

Hamilton continued to search for opportunities towards the end of the third and one finally panned out for them as Drayson Bowman snuck around the Comets defense to lay on the backhander in to the Comets net to make it 5-2.

The score was settled at 18:11 after the Bulldogs pulled their netminder for the extra attacker. From center ice, DeFazio flicked it down the ice and into the empty net for a final score of 5-2.

The boys in blue will try to continue their dominance over the Adirondack Flames this Friday for the fifth and final game of their homestand at 7 p.m. Through their previous nine meetings this season the Comets are undefeated against the Calgary Flames American Hockey League affiliate.

SOHO Sees Something New Near The Sun

An unusual comet skimmed past the sun on Feb 18-21, 2015, as captured by the European Space Agency (ESA) and NASA's Solar and Heliospheric Observatory, or SOHO.

This comet was interesting for two reasons. First it's what's called a non-group comet, meaning it's not part of any known family of comets. Most comets seen by SOHO belong to the Kreutz family - all of which broke off from a single giant comet many centuries ago.

The second reason it's interesting is because the vast majority of comets that come close enough to the sun to be seen by SOHO do not survive the trip. Known as sungrazers, these comets usually evaporate in the intense sunlight. This comet made it to within 2.2 million miles of the sun's surface - but survived the trip intact.

"There's a half-decent chance that ground observers might be able to detect it in the coming weeks," said Karl Battams, a solar scientist at the Naval Research Lab in Washington, D.C. "But it's also possible that events during its trip around the sun will cause it to die fairly fast."

Since launching in 1995, SOHO has become the number one comet finder of all time -- this was comet discovery number 2,875. However, SOHO sees non-group comets like this only a few times a year.

Watch the video to see the comet fly around the sun. Toward the end of the video, as the comet begins to develop a tail, the sun releases an eruption of solar material, called a coronal mass ejection, or CME, to add something more to the scene.

Comets Are Like Deep Fried Ice Cream, Scientists Say

NASA researchers think they understand why comets have a hard, crispy outside and a cold but soft inside just like fried ice cream.

Two NASA spacecraft have interacted with a comet surface, and both found a crunchy exterior and somewhat softer, more porous interior. Scientists know thatcomets are made of a mixture of rock and ice, but up until now they could not fully explain this change in texture from the inside to the outside.

Now, researchers using a souped-up refrigerator (officially known as a cryostat instrument) have re-created the conditions on the surface of a comet. They think they can explain the process that makes a comet not unlike a flying hunk of fried ice cream. [AmazingCometPhotos from Europe's Rosetta Probe]

Scientists suspect that the very coldest comets and icy moons in the solar system contain a special kind of ice called amorphous, or porous, ice. To create amorphous ice, water vapor molecules must be flash-frozen at a temperature of about minus 405 degrees Fahrenheit (243 degrees Celsius).

According to astatement from NASA, this flash-freezing process is "sort of like Han Solo in the Star Wars movie 'The Empire Strikes Back,'" in the film, Solo is flash-frozen alive in a slab of carbonite.

Amorphous ice is extremely cold, but relatively soft, like cotton candy, according to Murthy Gudipati, a researcher at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and an author on the new study.

When the comet makes its way toward the sun, the temperatures on the outside become too hot for amorphous ice to survive. In the new study, the researchers re-created what happens on the comet's exterior when the temperature starts to rise.

Comets Can't Solve the Devils

February 21, 2015 - American Hockey League (AHL) Utica Comets UTICA, N.Y. - The Utica Comets were downed by the Albany Devils 2-1 Saturday night at the Utica Memorial Auditorium.

Brandon DeFazio found the Comets only goal of the game, which matched his season career high for goals with a total of 17. Devils netminder Scott Clemmensen, the first star of the game, made it difficult for the Comets all night as he stopped 30 of the 31 shots the Comets threw towards the drapes.

DeFazio opened up the scoring halfway into the first stanza after he received a pass from the left corner courtesy of Dustin Jeffrey. With the puck in the center slot DeFazio spiked it to the far side of the net right past Clemmensen's leg for the 1-0 lead at 9:15.

Towards the end of the second period a screen in front of Jacob Markstrom is finally what caused the Comets to give up their one-goal lead. Brandon Burlon unintentionally set up Ben Thomson after a slapshot that re-bounded off Markstrom's right pad. With Hunter Shinkaruk and Graham Black fighting for a position in front of the net, the screen was too thick for Markstrom to see through and Thomson raced in to pop it in for the equalizer at 17:19. Chris McKlevie was credited with the secondary assist.

As they entered the third period, the Devils figured out that screening Markstrom was their best chance at beating one of the top goaltending leaders in the American Hockey League. At 4:07 Reece Scarlett pounded one in from the point and zipped through for the 2-1 lead as Markstrom was entertaining the handful of Devils that were setting up camp in front of his crease.

Despite pulling Markstrom and having a 6-on-5 advantage for the remaining 1:18 in the third, the Comets couldn't find the equalizer to push the game to extra time.

The Comets will play their fourth game of their five-game homestand this Tuesday against the Hamilton Bulldogs for the fourth time this season. In their last meeting, the Bulldogs downed the Comets 7-5.

Three Stars: 1. ALB Scott Clemmensen (Win, 31 Saves) 2. ALB Reece Scarlett (1 Goal) 3. UTI Brandon DeFazio (1 Goal)

Comets earn top seed

The magical season for the Mason High School boys basketball team was recognized during the Division I sectional tournament draw.

The Comets, 19-0 and ranked second in the state, grabbed the number one seed in the draw Sunday at Lakota West High School.

Mason finished with 868 points in voting by coaches, edging Wilmington (21-1) for the top spot.

Mason took a first-round bye and will open tournament play at 6 p.m. March 4 against the winner of No. 21 Anderson and No. 23 Harrison. A win could set up a rematch with No. 5 La Salle.

Last year, LaSalle ended Masons season in the sectional finals, 65-48.

However, this season has been unlike any other for the Comets in the recent past.

The 19 wins (heading into Fridays Greater Miami Conference showdown vs. Lakota East) is the most for the Comets since joining the Greater Miami Conference in the 2007-2008 season. Mason was 18-4 in 2012.

The Comets have outscored their opponents by an average of 26 points a game (68-42) and have had just one game decided by fewer than 10 points, a 62-60 win over Princeton on Jan. 16.

The Comets have used a balanced attack . Michael Beebe is the lone Mason player in the top five in any category in the GMC. Hes fifth in assists at 3.3 per game.

Mason has seven players averaging at least six points per game, with Cameron Arminio leading the way at 13.1 points per game, followed by Eddie Puisis adds 10.6 per game off the bench. Kyle Lamotte (9.9), Matt King (7.4), Beebe (6.9), Spencer Cline (6.4) and Rodney Hutchinson (6.2). Blake Benjamin also provides key minutes.

Comets Power-Play Carries Utica Past Marlies 5-2

February 20, 2015 - American Hockey League (AHL) Utica Comets UTICA, N.Y. - Two power-play goals rocketed the Utica Comets over the Toronto Marlies 5-2 Friday evening at The Utica Memorial Auditorium. The Comets have scored two power-play goals in back-to-back games and have won seven of their last nine games.

Alexandre Grenier (1-2-3), Cal O'Reilly (1-1-2), Dustin Jeffrey (1-1-2), Alex Friesen (1-1-2) all helped the Comets win their 31st game of the year with multi-point games, and Jacob Markstrom stopped 28 of the 30 shots taken on him by the Marlies.

Things began to ramp up towards the end of period once O'Reilly netted the first goal for the Comets. Grenier saw the play unfold before his eyes as he circled around the back of Antoine Bibeau's net. Once Grenier made it to the right circle, the Canadian winger released a quick pass that met O'Reilly just above the center slot. Without giving Bibeau the chance to react, O'Reilly sniped it through Bibeau's right side for the 1-0 lead at 15:02. Nicklas Jensen received the secondary assist on the play.

The Comets waited almost twenty minutes but they scored another one for the two-goal lead at 14:11. It all started with Hunter Shinkaruk who popped off a pass to Jeffrey just before they crossed the blue line. Jeffrey streaked down the left wing and saw Friesen motioning his arm for the pass to the right wing. Jeffrey fed a saucer pass to Friesen who unloaded on the puck to put it straight past Bibeau to make it 2-0.

The third stanza was a bit more eventful for both sides of the ice with a total of five goals combined.

Jeffrey found the Comets third goal of the game and his 17th of the season after a dish to the right dot from Grenier in the opening minute of the third. Bibeau who was on the wrong side of the crease was distracted as the puck slid out to Jeffrey and right back to the open side of the net for the three-goal lead and the power-play goal.

The game wasn't out of reach for the Marlies just yet as they scored two quick ones to make it a one-goal game.

Ryan Rupert found the net for Toronto's first goal as the Comets were trying to kill off a slashing penalty taken by Brendan Gaunce. Rupert received a pass just inside the slot from Connor Brown and buried it past Markstrom's glove to make it 3-1.

Brendan Leipsic, who was just dealt to the Marlies from the Milwaukee Admirals scored in his first game for his new club to shorten the Comets lead to one. The play developed much like their first goal as Leipsic was traveling to the right of the net. He received a pass from Sam Carrick which enabled him to knock the puck past Markstrom's glove side for the second time.

The Comets took back their two-goal lead on yet another power-play attempt at 11:31. Grenier received the a pass at the point from O'Reilly and fired a shot that would not miss the back of the net to give the Comets a 4-2 lea. Jeremie Blain, who was recently called up from the ECHL's Kalamazoo Wings, was also credited with his first assist on the season for the Comets fourth goal.

Mills keeps cool, tops Jacksonville

Mills felt right at home Friday night at the Devil's Den in Jacksonville, but the Comets had to hold on late to leave with a victory.

Darious Hall scored 15 points and Cameron Ricks had 14 to lead the Comets past the Red Devils 58-47 in a 5A-Central Conference game.

The Comets (17-5, 10-2) are in second place in the 5A-Central while the Red Devils (18-7, 8-4) are third. Mills has two regular-season games left, against Little Rock Fair on Tuesday and a makeup game against Pulaski Academy on Thursday.

Comets Coach Raymond Cooper said his team settled down after trailing 7-0 early.

"We wanted to win each quarter by one point," Cooper said. "From the fourth quarter on, we just wanted to hold on."

Mills held Jacksonville to 16-of-40 shooting from the floor and limited the Red Devils to 22 points in the first three quarters.

Jacksonville pulled to within 52-38 with 3:24 left and Cooper called a timeout, making a point to tell the Comets about the Red Devils' ability to come back as they have done against other teams.

"They were scoring every time," Cooper said. "We were rushing like we were losing. I'm telling you, in this place, they can score 12 points in a minute. I've seen this happen before. So I said, 'Let's stop this now. Let's get this under control.'"

Mills could finally breathe a little after Hall's layup with 1:28 left that made it 58-44.

"It's hard to win here," Cooper said. "On a night like this where there's ice and snow, it's still packed. Luckily, we were able to get ahead and get the crowd of the game."
