Comets knock off Aquin for second time this season

STERLING The Newman Comets matched up with the Aquin Bulldogs for the second time this season Saturday night. The result was similar as the Comets defeated the Bulldogs 70-63 to capture the KSB Newman Christmas Classic.

Right off the bat, Newman (12-0) came out swinging. Senior John Payan, who scored 33-points Friday night, hit back-to-back 3s to give the Comets an early 8-2 lead.

Aquin (10-3) junior Aiden Chang, who was the Tournament MVP, rallied for eight straight points to help the Bulldogs secure a 16-11 lead after the first quarter. Chang finished with 28 points.

"I thought we did a nice job of keeping our composure," Newman coach Ray Sharp said. "We started out pretty good, and then they went on a nice run and took the lead on us. After that I think we settled down. We were rushing and weren't executing our offense, but once we started executing it really helped us."

In the second quarter a balanced Newman attack brought the Comets back into the game.

In a 5-minute stretch in the middle of the quarter, senior A.J. Sharp and sophomore Noah McCarty combined to score 11 points.Payan also chipped in a pair of 3s to add to the Comets' cause.

WIth time winding down before halftime, Aquin dialed up a man-to-man press.

Sharp received the ball and proceeded to wave everyone so he could go one-on-one to bring the ball up.

At half court, he dribbled behind his back to get around one defender, just in time to see another Bulldog flying at him. Once again, a smooth behind the back dribble got him around that defender. Finally, a spin move to get around a third defender led him to find an open man in the corner.

Payan was the open man, who hit nothing but net on the 3. Payan finished with 21 points. He made seven of his nine 3-point attempts.

Comets Lose in Final Minutes

December 28, 2013 - Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) Missouri Comets INDEPENDENCE, MO - After a very physical, penalty-filled game, the Missouri Comets end up with only their second loss of the season. The Syracuse Silver Knights scored the game winning goal on a shootout after a controversial call late in the fourth quarter. A crowd of 4,122 fans watched Missouri's Leo Gibson and Vahid Assadpour net hat tricks, but it wasn't enough as Kenardo Forbes had two three-point goals to lead the Silver Knights to the 18-15 win.

The first quarter featured more penalty minutes for the Comets than shots on goal. Brian Harris, Vahid Assadpour, Robert Palmer and Ramone Palmer each saw the inside of the penalty box. Syracuse took full advantage, scoring three goals on the man-advantage and taking a 7-2 lead into the first break. Leo Gibson's goal six minutes into the game was the only score for Missouri in the quarter.

The second quarter saw a complete reversal. Gibson completed his hat trick with two goals and Assadpour scored his first two goals in the period. The Comets were able to stay out of the penalty box, with the exception of a delay of game penalty to Coady Andrews, and led at halftime 12-11

After a lively halftime exhibition from local media personalities set the mood for an exciting end to the match. The Comets jumped out to a two goal lead after Assadpour completed his hat trick two minutes into the third period. Syracuse crawled back into the lead on the strength of Forbes' second three-point goal of the night. Byron Alvarez regained the advantage for the Comets in the fourth quarter, but a series of controversial calls gave the Silver Knights the advantage they had waited for.

Ten minutes into the final frame, The Comets' John Sosa and Syracuse's Neto were tangled up outside the Comets defensive arc. As both players tugged each other to the floor, referee Ron Cory awarded a Power Play to Syracuse by sending John Sosa to penalty box for holding. Goalkeeper Danny Waltman made the save on the ensuing shooutout attempt, but again the referees blew a whistle, this time declaring a hand ball foul on Danny Waltman. Nelson Santana converted the second shootout attempt and Forbes added a goal against the sixth attacker in the final minutes to complete the Syracuse win, 18-15.

The Comets hit the road for games on January 1st at the Rochester Lancers at 2:00p.m. CT and January 3rd against the Baltimore Blast at 6:35p.m. CT. The team will return home for their fourth game in eight days against the Rochester Lancers on Sunday January 5th at 7:35p.m.

Comets end winning streak

December 27, 2013 - American Hockey League (AHL) Utica Comets The Utica Comets came ever so close to extending their four game home winning streak, but a late Senator goal gave Binghamton a 4-3 victory in front of a sold out Utica Memorial Auditorium.

The fans stormed The AUD as 3,815 were on hand for the second meeting of the season between Utica and Binghamton. Alexandre Grenier had a three-point night (2-1-3), while Darren Archibald also found the back of the net for the Comets and Pascal Pelletier finished with two assists. Joe Cannata, who made his first start on home ice since Nov. 1, finished with 30 saves on 34 shots.

The Comets struck first just 4:12 into the game as Archibald drove hard to the net and put a Pelletier rebound past Binghamton goaltender Nathan Lawson. The goal was the fourth of the season for Archibald and the assist a team leading seventeenth for Pelletier. Grenier found the scoresheet for the second consecutive game with the secondary assist.

The Senators knotted the score at one just past the halfway point of the first as Matt Puempel buried a rebound from the right hand circle for his ninth goal of the season. Cannata turned away Derek Grant's slap shot but could not corral the second effort as well. Winger Andre Petersson also picked up a point on the play, his 16th of the year.

The Comets struck first just 1:26 into an exhilarating second period as Alexandre Grenier beat Lawson with a fantastic individual effort. Pelletier put the puck into the middle where Grenier collected, spun onto his forehand and fired one past Lawson. Pelletier's assist gave him his fifth multi-assist game of the season and defenseman Alex Biega also added a helper on the play.

Binghamton evened things up once again just 47 seconds later as Puempel scored his second of the evening. Grant fed the puck to Daniel New, whose point shot got to the front of the net where Puempel was on hand for the deflection to complete the first two goal game of his AHL career.

The Senators picked up their first lead of the evening on the power play, as Mark Stone beat Cannata off of a loose puck at back post. Cole Schneider and Stephane Da Costa netted assists on the play as Binghamton converted with the man advantage for the second time in the game.

Grenier ensured the Comets would not trail for long as he scored one of his own on the power play, to level the score at three. The Utica winger scored multiple times in a game for the first time in his AHL career, while he tied a career high with three points on the game. The Comets also extended a team streak as they scored on the power play for the eighth straight game at The AUD. Patrick Mullen had the lone assist for the Comets.

The second period was filled with penalty minutes as well as goals, with the two teams combining to rack up 49 penalty minutes. Darren Archibald and Michael Sdao dropped the gloves, while Kellan Lain and Sdao each picked up misconduct penalties, the Utica man for boarding and the Senator for instigating a fight.

After a back and forth third period, the Senators found themselves the beneficiary of two late penalty calls, which put the Comets two men down in the final minute. Mike Hoffman put a one-timer past a sliding Cannata for what would prove to be the game-winning goal with just 27.9 seconds left. The goal was the 15th of the season for Hoffman, which places him fifth in the AHL.

Clark's performance boosts Clayton over Moss Point By Zach Mayo

Updated at 1:59 p.m.

The Clayton Comets bounced back from a first-round loss in the HighSchoolOT.com Holiday Invitational's Shavlik Randolph bracket, beating the Mississippi Moss Point Tigers 77-64 on Friday morning.

Cincinnati recruit and Clayton star Gary Clark helped lift the team past the Tigers for its first win in the tournament. Clark came a block away from a triple-double, finishing with the monstrous stat line of 35 points, 22 rebounds and nine blocks.

"It really feels good to play at that level all game and see the outcome of it," Clark said.

After losing to the Apex Cougars on Thursday afternoon, Moss Point jumped to a quick with a three-point shot from Kentucky recruit Devin Booker. Terrance Trussell added another deep shot and the Tigers led 8-0 in the opening minutes.

Clayton battled back later in the quarter and trailed 19-12 at the end of the first eight minutes of play.

The Comets pulled closer in the second quarter, holding Booker scoreless through the first five minutes and only allowing him five points in the quarter. Clayton trailed 30-28 at halftime.

"I thought we started the game pretty well," said Moss Point head coach Micoe Cotton. "We tried to pack it inside and have a few bodies on Clark, but the second half we didn't come out and execute defensively."

Best comets of last 500 years

When Comet ISON was discovered and a preliminary orbit for it was worked out, it was initially announced that it could be the "comet of the century."

Of course, the 21st century is only 12 years old (from 2001) and ISON turned out to be a dud. But out there in the far recesses of space there is certainly some unknown comet worthy of such an honorific title that will ultimately put on a unique and memorable show sometime during this century.

There will always be bright and spectacular comets, but in each century there is always one that will stand above the others. Below I provide my own list of the five most spectacular comets that have appeared in each century starting from the 16th and running through the 20th century.

Take note that four of these five dazzlers appeared in the latter half of their century and that the average time between appearances amounts to 97 years. Considering that Comet Ikeya-Seki passed by in 1965, the next prospective "Comet of the Century" might not appear according to our small sampling until maybe 2029 at the earliest and maybe not even until the next century (in 2103!). [Incredible Photos of Comet ISON]

Then again, stupendously bright comets are totally unpredictable and can suddenly appear at almost any time.

Greatest Comet of the 16th Century: The Great Comet of 1577This comet passed to within 16.7 million miles of the sun on Oct. 27, but was not sighted until five days later, when it was described in an account from Peru as an exceptionally brilliant object. Contemporary descriptions note that it was seen through the clouds like the moon.

By Nov. 8, it was reported by Japanese observers as a "broom star," appearing "as bright as the moon" with a white tail spanning over 60 degrees (your clenched fist held at arm's length measures 10 degrees). The famous astronomer Tycho Brahe first saw the comet as a reflection in his garden fish pond on Nov. 13, and likened its brightness to Venus. The comet was still as bright as zero magnitude in December before it finally dropped below the limit of naked-eye visibility on Jan. 26, 1578. (Magnitude is a measure of a celestial object's brightness, with smaller numbers corresponding to brighter objects.)

Greatest Comet of the 17th Century: The Great Comet of 1680The great excitement that accompanied the first announcement of the discovery of Comet ISON was that initially its orbit appeared strikingly similar to this spectacular 17th century comet; it was hoped that perhaps ISON was either a return of this amazing object, or at the very least a large fragment. But later calculations showed this was not so.

The German astronomer Gottfried Kirch became the first person to ever discover a comet with a telescope when he sighted this comet on Nov. 14, 1680, when it was at fourth magnitude. By Dec. 2, it already had a 15-degree tail and had reached second magnitude (as bright as Polaris, the North Star). On Dec. 18, it was at perihelion (the closest point to the sun in its orbit) coming to within 128,000 miles of the sun's surface.

At least one report (from Albany, NY) indicates that the comet was visible in the daytime. Several days later it could be seen in the evening twilight sky with a tail stretching straight up from a second-magnitude head from the southwest horizon for 70 to 90 degrees. By Jan. 10, 1681, the tail had shrunk to 55 degrees and by the Jan. 23 it measured "only" 30 degrees, with its head having faded to fourth magnitude. It remained visible to the naked eye until early February 1681.

Comets in the Community: Christmas at St. Luke’s

December 26, 2013 - American Hockey League (AHL) Utica Comets The Utica Comets players were more than eager to make time for some of their biggest fans as they were back at Faxton St. Luke's Healthcare last Thursday. In the midst of a two game set with the visiting Abbotsford Heat, five Comet players delivered gifts to the brave children of both the pediatric department at St. Luke's and the Children's Miracle Network.

Comets players Alex Biega, Brandon DeFazio, Kellan Lain, David Marshall and Yann Sauve each returned to St. Luke's, after they had previously visited a few weeks before to meet with the home's senior citizens. The Comets made the day for a new generation of patients, these consisting of ill youth who are fighting for their lives.

As someone whose job description includes fighting, Yann Sauve was eager as always to be on hand to support the children. Sauve's community involvement dates back to his time as a member of the Chicago Wolves, where he played from 2011-2013.

"We feel lucky to have the life we have right now," Sauve said in an interview with WKTV. "Some of these kids unfortunately that have illnesses, it's just part of giving back to them."

The players took the role of Santa Claus for the children in need, as they came stocked with Comets gear in hand, including hockey sticks and cards for the children. Many Comets, including defenseman Alex Biega, realize the importance of giving back to these children.

"To make a difference in kids' lives, whether it's giving an autograph or just saying hi, and making a difference for that child I think is critical," Biega said to WKTV, in his third visit to the hospital. "It means a lot to us and the organization."

The Comets opened up the session to the community and the players took pictures and signed autographs for anyone who made a donation to the Children's Miracle Network.

"It's a pretty special opportunity for us," Comets winger Brandon DeFazio said. "I think we're all feeling pretty excited to have met those kids, they always bring a little bit of extra joy to your life because they're so positive and excited to see you. For the most part we're even more excited to meet them and it was a great opportunity to do that today."

DeFazio was recognized for his work within the community a season ago by the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, which he has only expanded upon since he arrived in Utica. The winger was awarded the IOA/American Specialty AHL Man of the Year award for his services and was named the team's nominee for the Yanick Dupre Award, given annually to the AHL player who best demonstrates involvement in his community.

"Sometimes you think you're having a bad day, but then you come here and realize that it could always be worse," DeFazio said. They're always positive, always excited and to see that on them always weighs pretty heavily on us too."
