Wall Street’s Love Affair With Snowflake And Cloud Computing Creates Biggest Software IPO In History – International Business Times

KEY POINTS

In the biggest initial public offering of the year and the largest IPO ever for a software company, Snowflake (SNOW) raised $3.36 billion in its debut on Wednesday.

Priced at $120 per share in the offering, Snowflake shares closed at $253.93 on Wednesday, granting the data warehousing company a market cap of more than $70 billion larger than Goldman Sachs (GS).

Cloud-computing stocks have flourished in a year when the COVIS-19 pandemic has forced millions to work from home.

Cloud has gone from a proof of concept or for things that were less critical to companies realizing it will enable a much more agile and modern architecture and working style," Daniel Elman,an analyst at Nucleus Research, said according toBloomberg.

We have already seen [cloud stocks] Zoom (ZM), DocuSign (DOCU) and Datadog (DDOG) do well this year, Bloomberg Intelligence analyst Mandeep Singh said. Investors understand the cloud business model well and that makes a high-growth company like Snowflake attractive.

Among the winners from the huge IPO was the Seattle-based firm Madrona Venture Group, which first invested in Snowflake three years ago.

Sometimes you find a team and a technology that is just poised to take off, Madrona Managing Director S. Somasegar said according to Geekwire.

Former Snowflake CEO Bob Muglia an ex- colleague of Somasegar at Microsoft (MSFT) owns 4 million Snowflake shares, or about a 1.7% stake, after selling half of his holdings to Warren Buffetts Berkshire Hathaway (BRK-A) in the IPO.

Singh of Bloomberg commented that Berkshires participation definitely validates the attractiveness of Snowflakes IPO.

Four of Snowflakes top executives, CEO Frank Slootman, Muglia, Chief Financial Officer Michael Scarpelli and Co-founder Benoit Dageville, now own stakes valued at $8 billion.

Iconiq Capital, a private investment firm, started investing in Snowflake in 2017. Its 12% stake in the company is now valued at $8.6 billion.

Another major beneficiary of Snowflakes IPO was early investor Sutter Hill Ventures, which owns more than 20% of the company a stake valued at $12.6 billion.

Based in San Mateo, Calif., Snowflake posted revenue of $242 million in the first half of 2020.

Aaron Levie, CEO of enterprise cloud company Box, said in a tweet that Snowflakes IPO is showing that markets for enterprise software continue to be far larger than most anticipate. With exponential growth in data, devices, and apps, something already big today might be 100 [times] bigger in just a few years.

Harri Thomas, a startup expert, tweeted: What's not to like about enterprise software? Clients budgets are massive, and procurement is such a pain for them that contracts are only ever revisited every 12-24 months, if that. You could be a massive enterprise business with [only five] customers.

However, Slootman was somewhat subdued about his companys successful IPO.

So far, so good, Slootman told Bloomberg. We needed to do this [IPO] for a number of reasons, especially to raise the stature of the company in the marketplace. We sell to the largest companies in the world and we also compete with the largest companies in the world, so its really important. ... Just staying on this growth trajectory takes one hell of an effort.

Regarding Snowflakes suddenly lofty valuation, Slootman told CNBC: A stock is worth exactly what somebody wants to pay for it. Its like talking about the weather, it is what it is. Tomorrows another day, well see what it brings.

The Top Green Zone Stocks in This Tech Disruptor Sector – Money and Markets

Buying an exchange-traded fund (ETF) can be a great way to gain diversified exposure to a specific sector, industry group or investment theme. You can buy a whole basket of individual stocks with just one click of the mouse (or tap of the finger).

For instance, in May, I recommended my Cycle 9 Alert readers make a bullish play on the SPDR Biotech ETF (NYSE: XBI).

I wanted them to have exposure to the entire biotech space during its search-for-a-vaccine rally. And even though a viable vaccine has yet to be announced, we rode that rally for a net gain of 113% in just two months! (Note: We bought options on the ETF.)

Of course, while buying a diversified ETF will give you exposure to a broad sector, industry group or theme you could instead buy only the ETFs top stocks.

That is, if you have a method for determining which of the ETFs individual stock holdings are top, and which are not.

This way, youll filter out the companies that will drag down the ETFs overall performance!

And thats what my new ETF X-Ray is all about.

Ill run each of the individual stock holdings of a popular ETF through my six-factor Green Zone Ratings model showing you which ones are top-rated and which may be best to avoid.

Lets get straight to it with todays ETF X-Ray!

Global X manages the Global X Cloud Computing ETF (Nasdaq: CLOU). This fund company focuses on disruptor sector ETFs for its investors.

Ive seen Global Xs president speak at the Inside ETFs conference Ive attended the past two years. I really like that this suite of ETFs gives investors access to some of the most innovative and cutting-edge investment themes out there right now including Internet of Thingsand cloud computing (CLOU).

These Digital 2.0 technologies are growing at double-digit rates and driving innovations across multiple sectors. And Global Xs suite of disruptor-sector ETFs is a great way to gain one-click access to them.

That said, lets take an X-Ray look at the Global X Cloud Computer ETF through the lens of my six-factor Green Zone Ratings model.

The table below shows the ETFs individual stock holdings, along with the Overall Rating theyve earned on my six-factor model.

Note that Im presenting two tables

The left side is sorted by the weight that each stock holds in the ETF. The stock at the top (Zoom, ZM) has the largest allocation of the ETFs assets.

The right side is sorted by my rating systems Overall Rating, so its easy to spot which stocks are top-rated.

Youll see the two largest holdings in Global Xs cloud-computer ETF are Zoom Video Communications (ZM) and Twilio (TWLO), with each stock making up over 6% of the ETFs holdings.

As I see it, these are companies that benefit from functionality that cloud computing affords and not necessarily pure-play cloud companies.

Whats more, while both are hyped glamour stocks (and are having great years!) they arent as proven as the likes of Amazon (AMZN), Alphabet (GOOGL) and Microsoft (MSFT), all three of which rate higher than Zoom and Twilio on my quality, value and volatility factor ratings.

Otherwise, one company you may not have heard of before is SPS Commerce (Nasdaq: SPSC). Its barely grown out of the small-cap category, with a market cap of just $2.7 billion.

SPS Commerce offers supply-chain management software solutions on the cloud. And though its a lesser-known name, its growing like gangbusters earnings-per-share are up 78% annually for the past three years!

This cloud-leveraging company is certainly worth a close look.

One last thing a plug for the cloud-computing consultant I just recommended yesterday in my Green Zone Fortunes newsletter.

This global-leader tech consultant is an expert in all things Digital 2.0, not just the cloud. And Amazon selected this company as a Premier Partner of its market-share leading AWS cloud platform, making it the go-to choice for any company wanting to get onto the cloud.

Frankly, I was shocked to find this company isnt a holding of the Global X Cloud Computer ETF it rates an 87 overall on my Green Zone stock rating model, and my two-year profit target for the stock is 80% above current prices.

Stay tuned! Ill have details for how you can sign up to get that pick and many more in the coming days!

To good profits,

Adam ODell, CMT

Cloud Computing Data Center It Asset Disposition (Itad) Market to Witness Exponential Growth by 2020-2027 | Leading Players DELTA NETWORK SYSTEMS...

Harnessing the Power of Cloud Computing in Kenya – IT News Africa

The topic of cloud computing has been doing the rounds for quite some time now, and businesses have been flooded with information promoting and supporting the use of cloud technology. With so much information out there about the cloud, it may take some time to fully wrap our heads around the implications of connecting to the cloud.

What does cloud technology mean for Kenya and Africa, and how can we leverage these services to adapt and thrive in a digital world?

The potential benefits of mass cloud adoption across Africa

The benefits offered by cloud computing will differ within each individual business based on their unique needs. However, the underlying advantages boil down to the same three points: strategic value, flexibility and efficiency.

Having access to cloud computing means that businesses can access all of their resources from any Internet-enabled device, no matter where they are. The result of this is that the ability to collaborate with colleagues is no longer limited to one location, providing a competitive advantage over businesses that use fixed, onsite IT infrastructure.

Another advantage of having instant access to business-related files and information from any location or device is that companies will experience less downtime as a result of hardware failures and device theft. Your data will always be safe and secure with an offsite backup.

In addition to instant access, switching to the cloud means cost savings, as businesses no longer need to invest in physical infrastructure that needs to be continuously updated. This ties in with the flexibility of cloud solutions. You can scale your solution to fit the size and needs of your business as a business grows, you can add users and services, and when needs decrease, you can downscale. This can have a significant effect on managing cash flow.

A good cloud service provider should give you the freedom to choose the services that suit your business. Your provider should also manage your application and install the latest updates behind the scenes. This means that you can continue operating without having to worry about keeping up with technological developments in the cloud. This will also result in savings on capital costs and increases business efficiency.

With the significant advantages to productivity and flexibility that come with the adoption of cloud technology, enabling cloud services in Africa should be a priority for government and business.

Barriers to cloud uptake in Kenya

Adoption of cloud technology has accelerated in recent years, driven by better broadband connectivity and more affordable data. However, many private businesses and public institutions in East Africa are yet to fully embrace these services due to insufficient knowledge, public perception, confusing regulations, and cost and security concerns to name a few challenges.

Another barrier to the uptake of cloud technology is inadequate access to a reliable, high-speed Internet connection. Without one, cloud technology is redundant. We have seen an increase in Internet usage in Kenya, with 39.3 million Internet subscriptions recorded in 2019/2020, according to the Communications Authority of Kenya.

Awareness has to be created around what technology is available in Kenya and how people can go about harnessing it. This means that the risks associated with an Internet-driven world need to be addressed as well.

There has already been an increase in the uptake of cloud technology in Kenya over the last few years, with 35.6 per cent of public institutions and 22.9 per cent of private businesses using this technology in 2017/2018, according to the Communications Authority of Kenya. Given the time since these figures were released as well as recent global events we anticipate seeing a significant increase in the number of cloud computing users and in-demand for cloud technology in Kenya.

Enabling the cloud for a future-forward Kenya

If Kenya is to take advantage of the opportunities that the cloud can provide, businesses and government need to work together to create a more enabling, conducive cloud environment. Nurturing the development of a stable, reliable communications infrastructure network in Kenya is key to ensuring the continuous uptake of cloud technology. By providing infrastructure that is able to withstand the demands of an Internet-driven world, the Kenyan economy will be able to grow and develop into a thriving business hub.

Healthcare Cloud Computing Market to Witness Exponential Growth by 2020-2027 | Leading Players Athenahealth, Carecloud, VMWare, GNAX Health,...

Securing healthcare organizations when moving to the cloud – TechRadar

Organizations across industries have been forced to adapt and adjust digital transformation initiatives to meet the needs of a changing world. While the healthcare industry has a history of embracing new technologies and digital transformation (DX) more slowly than other industries, COVID-19 has served as a driving force for the recent acceleration of such initiatives.

With a shortened timeline to launch new technologies, security and business continuity flaws can quickly arise. Therefore, it is critical that healthcare organizations take the necessary steps to review their IT infrastructure to ensure that new / existing technologies meet the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) as well as perform critical data security and backup functions to ensure business continuity.

As the healthcare industry adapts to new patient and physician needs, the demand for cloud-based solutions and telehealth offerings has increased. In 2019, only 11 percent of U.S. consumers used telehealth offerings, but now, 46 percent of consumers conduct their healthcare appointments via telehealth platforms. Additionally, according to Dattos 2020 State of the MSP report, upwards of 70 percent of respondents, including managed service providers (MSPs) who work with healthcare institutions, are projected to use Microsoft 365 cloud services within the next two years and anticipate cloud migrations to be the top business driver in 2020.

Some of the most recent healthcare organizations shifting to cloud computing services include Cerner, Allscripts, and MEDITECH. But what these companies, and many others, may not realize is that the cloud solutions they choose such as Google G suite and Microsoft 365, dont provide the level of security and business continuity processes needed to protect sensitive data, while remaining HIPAA compliant.

This is because the cyber threat landscape is expanding rapidly. In fact, 75 percent of healthcare organizations have experienced a cyberattack in their lifetime; 53 percent in just the last year. COVID-19 related fear and uncertainty adds to the chaos with malicious hackers employing techniques related to the pandemic to infiltrate healthcare organizations. In order for healthcare cyber security teams to be able to effectively address the threat landscape, improve their overall security posture and protect patient data, it is critical that they take a proactive approach to IT by implementing an effective software-as-a-service (SaaS) protection solution.

While moving to the cloud is an important and necessary step to meet DX demands, several risks must be considered and monitored throughout the process. First and foremost, data created in cloud-based offerings like Microsoft 365 and Google G Suite are just as vulnerable to accidental deletion, ransomware, and other corruption as data stored in on-premise applications. Additionally, many SaaS application user agreements state that data protection, data-level security, and long-term retention are ultimately the responsibility of the end-user.

This is why many cloud-based vendors like Microsoft typically recommend a shared responsibility model, a third-party backup solution (such as SaaS protection), in its Services Agreement. In other words, adding SaaS protection will secure the organizations data against service interruptions, loss of service due to natural disaster or power outage, and prevent unnecessary downtime, which is especially crucial for healthcare organizations which are currently at an increased risk of attack or disruption.

Not only do healthcare organizations have to worry about cyber and data corruption threats when moving to the cloud, but they also have to keep in mind federal regulations, such as HIPAA. For many industries, storing data for extended periods of time is a nice-to-have, but for healthcare, it is legally mandated. Healthcare organizations are required to store patient data for seven years, so loss of data isnt an option.

As the industry shifts to the cloud, cloud solutions such as Microsoft Office 365 will house data for 90 days, which simply wont cut it in healthcare. For example, if an employee were to leave a healthcare institution, the data on their device and account will only be stored for up to 90 days. That means data generated from various patient encounters would be wiped clean, which is in violation of HIPAAs requirements for every healthcare organization to store any and all patient data for seven years.

The healthcare industry as we know it has changed forever. Those institutions that learn and adapt to the changing landscape will come out of the pandemic stronger than ever. Healthcare organizations need to be equipped to meet the growing demand for cloud-based offerings, and securely meet those expectations.

Adopting a cloud-based solution is a crucial first step in a successful DX strategy, but without the proper proactive security measures in place progress stalls and weaknesses become more apparent. Its only a matter of time before its simply too late to patch weaknesses and critical patient data is lost for good, or worse stolen and exploited.

By investing in an effective SaaS protection solution, healthcare organizations can put their worries aside when it comes to data storage and security vulnerabilities and focus on providing the best possible care to their patients.

Industry experts discuss disparities in cloud ERP

Enterprise resource planning systems are among the most complex of any IT software tool - and although change is slow, the market is moving. Chief among these shifts is a move to the cloud - but not all migrations are equal.

Getting the most out of cloud-based ERP involves going beyond simply moving your existing on-premises solution(s) to a cloud environment. A well-implemented SaaS approach can not only transform and enhance these systems, but also evolve approaches to other processes and resources within the organisation.

Chief amongst these is what to do with the time the IT team is able to reclaim once they're no longer having to maintain on-prem ERP infrastructure. How can you use their technical skills to drive the core business instead of getting tied up by day-to- day IT?

In an upcoming webinar - Inside modern ERP: enabling transformation in people and processes - Computing's editorial director Stuart Sumner will join Unit4 CTO Claus Jepsen, the Natural History Museum's head of technology solutions, Richard Arthur Hinton, and Computing content strategist Andrew Hobbs to discuss cloud versus SaaS ERP.

The webinar, and accompanying dedicated research, will seek to address the issue of using IT skills to drive business, and the other key ways modern ERP can catalyse transformation in people and processes. This includes retaining and attracting talent, developing and right technology skills, and determining how ERP fits best into your wider transformation and cloud migration journey.

Register now to hear industry experts discuss the state of the modern ERP market, and the changes the last six months have wrought.

Cloud Security Challenges in 2020 And How to Avoid Them – TechFunnel

Check Point and Cybersecurity Insiders have released their global 2020 Cloud Security Report, wherein the emphasis was placed on the cloud security challenges that business security systems face in the protection of data and workloads in their public cloud systems.

According to the report, 75% of respondents revealed that they were highly concerned about public cloud security as it continues to remain a big challenge for them.

One of the current cloud computing security issues and challenges affecting cloud security in 2020 is the problem of data breaches. The data breach has several consequences, some of which includes:

This is another of the most widespread cloud security challenges facing cloud technology in 2020. For example, a misconfigured AWS Simple Storage Service (S3) cloud storage bucket leaked accurate and sensitive data of about 123 million American families in 2017.

The dataset was owned by Experian, a credit bureau that engaged in the selling of the data to an online marketing and data analytics organization called Alteryx. The file was exposed by Alteryx. Such an incidence can have lethal consequences.

All over the world, several businesses are moving parts of their IT infrastructure to public clouds. A major issue with this migration is the incorporation of adequate security structures to tackle cyber threats.

The challenge however is that most businesses still find it almost impossible to implement this process. Datasets are vulnerable to several attacks when businesses make the assumption that cloud transition is a simple-to-execute task of just migrating their present IT system and security architecture to a cloud environment. Another contributing factor is also a lack of understanding of the shared security role model.

With cloud computing comes several changes to typical internal system management practices associated with identity and access management (IAM). Although these arent really new cloud security challenges, they are however more important challenges when working on a cloud-based environment.

This is because cloud computing has great effects on identity, credential, and access management. In both private and public cloud environments, there is a need for CSPs and cloud users to manage IAM without impairing security.

The hijacking of accounts is an issue characterized by the access to and abuse of accounts that contain extremely sensitive or private details, by malicious attackers. Usually, the accounts with the most threats in cloud environments are subscriptions or cloud service accounts.

These accounts are prone to compromise as a result of stolen credentials, exploiting cloud-based systems, and phishing attacks.

According to the 2018 Netwrix Cloud Security Report, 58% of organizations indicate insiders as the cause of security breaches. Thus, most security incidents are caused by insider negligence.

The report from the Ponemon Institutes 2018 Cost of Insider Threats study indicated that 13% of the reported insider incidents were caused by credential theft, 23% were associated with criminal insiders, and a whopping 64% was as a result of employee or contractor negligence.

Some of the cited common scenarios are: employees or other internal staff being victims of phishing emails that resulted in malicious attacks on business assets, employees saving private company data on their own poorly secure personal systems or devices, and cloud servers that have been configured inappropriately.

In order to enable consumers to manage and utilize cloud systems, cloud computing providers release a set of software user interfaces (UIs) and APIs. These APIs are the ones that determine how secure and available the overall cloud servers services will be.

From access management and authentication to activity control and encryption, it is necessary that these interfaces are designed for protection against both malicious and accidental attempts to infiltrate the security policy. The implications of insecure APIs can be the abuse or even worse the breach of a dataset.

A number of major data breaches have been caused by hacked, exposed, or broken APIs. In essence, it becomes imperative for companies to have an understanding of the security features that characterize the design and presentation of these interfaces on the internet.

The transition from the data platform to the cloud environment creates certain issues for the creation of adequate data storage and protection protocol. It is now important for the user to create fresh processes for duplicating, migrating, and storing data.

This process becomes even more complex if the user would be employing Multi-cloud. These problems should be solved by a control plane. This is because it provides the integrity and security that would complement the data plane which brings about stability and runtime of the data.

An inefficient control plane indicates that whoever is in charge either a DevOps engineer or a system architect does not have complete control over the verification, security, and logic of the data infrastructure.

In this kind of situation, major stakeholders are unaware of how data flows, the security configuration, and the positions/areas of structural weak points and blind spots. As a result of these challenges in cloud security, the company could experience data leakage, unavailability, or corruption.

Every now and then, cloud service providers reveal processes and security protocols that are needed in order to successfully integrate and safeguard their systems. In most cases, this information is disclosed via API calls and the protections are integrated into the CSPs metastructure.

The metastructure is regarded as the customer line/CSP of demarcation, also called the waterline. In this model, several levels are characterized by error possibilities. For instance, inappropriate API integration by the CSP makes it easier for attackers to hinder cloud customers through the interruption of integrity, confidentiality, of service availability.

Restricted cloud usage visibility is the outcome of the inability of a company to visualize and analyze the safety or maliciousness of the cloud service used within the organization. There are two major cloud security challenges in this concept.

The first is un-sanctioned app use. This happens when employees are making use of cloud tools and applications without the specific authorization of corporate IT and security. This, therefore, leads to a self-assistance model known as Shadow IT.

It is risky when insecure cloud services activity is not in accordance with corporate guidelines, especially when integrated with sensitive corporate data. According to forecasts made by Gartner, by 2020, of all successful security infiltration in businesses will be driven by shadow IT systems and resources.

Secondly, is sanctioned application misuse. It is usually difficult for companies to carry out analysis on how approved apps are being taken advantage of by insiders who make use of the sanctioned app.

Most often, this utilization takes place without the specific permission of the organization, or by external threat agents that target the service though methods like Domain Name System (DNS) attacks, Structured Query Language (SQL) injection, credential theft, and others.

Malicious attackers may take advantage of cloud computing resources to target cloud providers, as well as other users or organizations. It is also possible for malicious actors to host malware on cloud services.

Malware that is hosted on cloud service may appear to have higher legitimacy because the malware utilizes the domain of the CSP. In addition, cloud-based malware can utilize cloud-sharing resources like an attack vector to propagate itself the more.

According to a survey, about 60% of respondents ascertain or strongly ascertain that the launching of business services in the cloud has skyrocketed beyond their ability to effectively maintain them in a timely manner. This figure remains the same since it was reported. This means that there has been no progress in that aspect. With the increasing rate of public cloud adoption, it is safe to conclude that the ground has been lost.

The primary objective of DoS attacks is to disable a system, network, or machine so that it becomes inaccessible to its intended users. The development and growth of cryptocurrencies like Ripple and Bitcoin make it easy for DoS attacks to occur the more.

By using cryptocurrency, it is no longer a must for cybercriminals to acquire the needed skills or possess control over a botnet. All they need to do is hire another hacker via these funding options to execute the work on their behalf.

In terms of security features, Vendor Lock is identified as a risk factor. It is highly restrictive to be limited to just one compatible security solution choice for a cloud service. The impact of this can be a low ROI for security.

This is because the locked-in vendor does not need to be in competition with other vendors. They are with your company since youre their only choice if you desire a functional service without starting all over from the scratch.

Thus, it is necessary that you ascertain how effective it would be to move from a particular service provider to another when choosing cloud-based services. It is pertinent that you consider certain factors before choosing a cloud computing service in order to avoid vendor lock-in (for either your cloud service itself or your security solutions). Consider these factors:

Awareness and adequate communication of security risks is an important aspect of network security, as well as cloud security. A thorough security solution must be able to alert the respective website or app managers immediately it perceives a security threat.

Without clear and prompt communication, the appropriate entities will not be able to quickly mitigate the threat and take proper steps that will minimize the threat.

In all, although all of the issues discussed above pose a threat to cloud security, they are however not insurmountable. With the proper approach, technology, and partners, businesses can overcome the cloud security challenges and begin to enjoy the abundant benefits of cloud technology.

SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 16, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Segment, the worlds leading customer data platform (CDP), today announced it has been named to the Forbes 2020 Cloud 100 for the fifth year in a row. Forbes Cloud 100 is the definitive ranking of the top 100 private cloud companies in the world, published by Forbes in partnership with Bessemer Venture Partners and Salesforce Ventures.

As digital transformation accelerates faster than ever before, the ability to deliver highly personalized, consistent customer experiences across any channel has now become mission-critical, said Peter Reinhardt, CEO and co-founder of Segment. We provide the data foundation that more than 20,000 businesses use to provide a world-class experience for their customers. Were honored to be named to the Forbes Cloud 100 and see this as a validation of the success of the Segment Customer Data Platform and another signal that there is an enormous market opportunity ahead.

The announcement comes on the heels of significant company momentum. Segment recently launched Segment Data Lakes, a new data architecture product built specifically to help companies create cutting-edge customer experiences with their customer data. Earlier this year, Segment also united more than 200 companies to launch The Platform of Independents, a group pledging to liberate data from the limitations of traditional CRM suites and allow businesses to build customized technology stacks that fit their needs.

Segment now has more than 20,000 customers globally and over 550 employees across North America, EMEA and Asia Pacific. In 2019, the company raised $175M in Series D funding. This follows a number of recent recognitions for the company, including being named among Forbes 2020 list of America's Best Startup Employers, Inc. A cloud computing career has its rewards – Deccan Herald

The exponentially increasing demand for cloud computing professionals is one reason why many are focusing on making a career in the field.

However, being a specialist in the field of cloud computing is not easy and it requires a lot of effort to learn the skill. With a focussed mind, one can acquire the set of skills to master cloud computing.

Coding:Computer programmers use cloud computing's capacity to handle humongous volumes of data to create, host, and execute new applications. Programming languages like Python, Ruby, and Perl have made their way into the cloud ecosystem, while the familiar favourites PHP, Java, and .NET are still there. Acquiring the knowledge and skill of the program will take you a long way, and you can start with any open-source language with a simple syntax like Python.

Database Management:The art of setting-up, accessing and managing data is also one that is in immense demand. Here, it is important to excel in database query languages such as MySQL, MongoDB, and Hadoop that run on SQL.

Linux: The demand for professionals with a knack for open-source operating systems, especially Linux, is pretty high. With tech giants like Microsoft focusing on the open-source market, this trend is going to last a while. So, being well-versed with designing, development and architecture on Linux is a big plus.

Cloud-Based Platforms: For IT professionals, cloud computing is not a tough nut to crack if they put in some effort to become proficient with common cloud platforms such as Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform. If you master all three, it will reflect versatility in your CV.

Data Integration:The ownership and accessibility of the data stored in various public, private, and hybrid clouds is another important aspect of cloud computing. Therefore, to become a professional in the field, you need to become acquainted with the organisation of data coming from Multiple Vendors, Different Datacenters, and Diverse Platforms. This facilitates the management and amalgamation of awe-inspiring data that hasto be protected by a company every day.

Business Management: Managing personnel, communicating with the different levels of management, and negotiation with vendors and buyers are some skills that are quintessential too. This is because data management, creation, development, and design would not work if the entire organisation is not working in complete harmony.

Apart from business soft-skills, cloud computing professionals should be responsible and understand how crucial it is to ensure the complete security of data.

Certifications: The tech-giants have created their certifications which require you to be on your toes to clear. Therefore, if you are successful in obtaining them, they will add value to your CV. Some of these certifications to help you grow as a professional are: AWS Certification, Google Cloud Certified, and Azure Certification.

In the end, if you are determined to excel in cloud computing, we would advise you to focus on one skill at a time and seek guidance from seasoned professionals.

2020 Puts Cloud Computing in Government to the Test – GovTech

The COVID-19 crisis demonstrated state and local governments ability to shift on the fly. While work-from-home arrangements were sporadic pre-pandemic, government technology leaders quickly and effectively adapted to the new requirements. In Tennessee, more than half of all government employees were teleworking this spring, and in Massachusetts over 90 percent of back-office staff were working remotely.

Cloud played a key role in empowering the rapid transition to new modes of work. Microsoft, for instance, announced in March that use of its cloud-based messaging and collaboration tools had jumped 37 percent in one week, at one point logging 900 million meeting and call minutes a week.

In the COVID-19 crisis, cloud and software-as-a-service proved their utility, their versatility and their scalability. Government and private-sector technology executives say this practical demonstration will accelerate the adoption of cloud and SaaS going forward. A recent Flexera survey found 59 percent of enterprise IT leaders plan to increase cloud adoption either slightly or significantly as a result of COVID-19. More than one in three executives see the pandemic as an impetus to digitally transform their business, according to a survey by software-maker Wind River.

Government was headed this way already. NASCIOs 2019 state CIO survey showed 34 percent of IT leaders had a cloud migration strategy in place and 51 percent had a strategy in development. The Center for Digital Government (CDG)* has also been tracking changing attitudes toward cloud technologies in cities, counties and states for several years. COVID-19 has opened up the throttle on those efforts.

Arkansas CTO Yessica Jones said cloud technologies not only enabled state employees to telework, but in many cases made them more productive. / Credit:David Kidd

In a recent CDG webinar, state IT chiefs from California, Indiana and Arkansas all described the use of cloud and SaaS technologies as key to their successful COVID-19 response.

In Indiana, CIO Tracy Barnes and his team supported some 120 state agencies in the push to work from home, and investments made last fall in cloud-enabled services helped make that transition possible. His department had been piloting Office 365, laying out governance for the use of such tools before the pandemic hit.

That early investment allowed for us to quickly scale and stand up and expand our footprint, to support the massive work-from-home need that hit us almost overnight, he said.

Californias state IT shop has been aggressively pursuing cloud since 2016, an effort that paid off in the COVID-19 crisis. CIO Amy Tong reported that 90 percent of some 200,000 state employees were able to transition smoothly to a telework environment.

Hardware presented an initial challenge, Tong said: Existing rules required employees to use state-owned laptops when working remotely, in order to ensure security, but there werent enough such devices available. Tongs office flexed the rules, implementing uniform security protocols that made it safe for workers to access government systems via their personal devices.

The ability to more easily implement new security protocols may be one of the chief benefits of working in a cloud environment. A recent NASCIO survey found that among government IT leaders who have implemented cloud applications and services, 53 percent say those uses are governed centrally. Advocates for cloud and SaaS have long said that centralized governance offers a way to bolster security across an organization.

We have to make sure that we are delivering service that truly is able to be accessed and utilized by our users across the state. How do we do that with a pending massive budget cut? Thats going to be the big challenge. Indiana CIO Tracy Barnes

The state of Arkansas likewise benefited from cloud, with CTO Yessica Jones also supporting a rapid shift to telework. When it was time to stand up a call center, and we really needed to do it very quickly, pieces of that call center went to the cloud, she said. The pandemic unemployment assistance program also ramped up rapidly via a cloud deployment, and cloud has continued to play a role in supporting state employees return to work, with SaaS-enabled temperature measuring stations.

In some cases, the successful transition to telework didnt just make state employees capable it made them better.

Jones office polled remote workers part-way into the crisis, and while some said they missed the daily interaction with co-workers, others mentioned that working from home allowed them to pay more attention to long-overdue tasks, she said. This aligns with private-sector experiences: A recent report from CNBC/Change Research found 60 percent of workers say they are either as productive or even more productive working from home.

Around the nation, cloud and SaaS proved their worth in a number of ways amid the pandemic. The Illinois Department of Employment Security used Googles cloud-based contact center technology to handle more than 140,000 phone and Web inquiries a day, said Todd Schroeder, director of Global Public Sector Digital Strategy with Google Cloud.

He also pointed to the Chicago Public Health Department, which leveraged their technology to build a health app to deliver important information and guidance directly to affected people.

Cloud offered states a means to meet the need for large-scale remote access to key business applications, even as demand for services from citizens and other key constituents skyrocketed virtually overnight. Its the scalability of having services in the cloud that allowed many of these public services to be quickly ramped up to deal with the public demand, Tong said.

Jones has reached a similar conclusion. For this particular event, how things developed so quickly, it really made good sense to just stand up cloud services for whatever the needs were, she said. One state saw a 400 percent jump in unemployment claims. Legacy systems couldnt keep pace, and CRM provider Salesforce worked with state officials to swiftly implement a cloud-based solution.

In less than a week, we set up a virtual contact center, so that no one had to be in the call center sitting at a desk, said Salesforce SVP of Global Government Solutions Casey Coleman. With those digital capabilities they were able to work through that backlog, process the applications and get money into the hands of people who were in urgent need of assistance.

For states already on the journey to the cloud, and for those still waiting in the wings, experts say the successful push to telework this spring could provide the catalyst for accelerated adoption.

While many states have had some form of cloud first ambition in play in recent years, finances have proven to be a stumbling block for some. In a shift from legacy-era capital expenditures to a modernized operating-expenditure model, some have found it difficult to offer solid metrics around return on investment.

IT leaders could point to cost savings through data center consolidation as a clear win for SaaS, along with other incremental gains. But the financial adjustment from CapEx to OpEx isnt apples-to-apples, and that made it hard to nail down a definitive ROI.

With the productivity gains evident in the COVID-19 telework experience, it may become possible to generate a fuller economic argument in favor of cloud and SaaS. That economic argument becomes all the more persuasive, given that many states will face budget cuts as tax revenues decline amid the COVID-19-related economic downturn.

Barnes said the economic considerations will be a key factor in determining his states future embrace of modern solutions. We have to make surethat we are delivering service that truly is able to be accessed and utilized by our users across the state. How do we do that with a pending massive budget cut? he said. Thats going to be the big challenge.

Indeed, the expected downturn is starting to materialize, forcing creative approaches like Ohios recent request of its contractors, including those delivering IT services, to take a 15 percent pay cut on current contracts.

Part of the answer lies in a more aggressive uptake of cloud and SaaS solutions. Where we can definitely show value and potentially show a decrease in cost and spend, lets look at what pieces we can start transitioning to the cloud and offloading from our internal support, Barnes said.

If anything, state CIOs say, tight fiscal times could help them make the case for more as-a-service offerings. We are in a digital era, which means [we need] continuous investment into digital services, Tong said.

The move to cloud has been an evolutionary exercise in state government. After initial forays proved successful, many adopted a cloud first approach, saying they would consider cloud and SaaS options first as they sought to modernize legacy systems.

More recently, forward-thinking CIOs have adapted this slightly. Arkansas calls its strategy cloud right, while California is pursuing a cloud smart approach. This emerging terminology points to a more finessed approach to modernization, one that state CIOs say will be reflected in their post-COVID-19 efforts to broaden cloud adoption.

Jones said of her team, were still firm believers in cloud. But that belief does not equate to blind faith.

We believe that not everything is a good fit whether it is the visibility, the cost the security of the data, she said. There are many different things to be taken into consideration before moving an application or data to the cloud.

Barnes described a similar approach unfolding in Indiana. Do you aggressively start pushing everything to the cloud? he asked. Short answer: No. The longer answer depends on the specific application or process, as well as the agency or department that owns or relies on that application. We always have to be focused on that business need.

Certain situations may be a natural fit for cloud, but if the business is not ready, if the business is not capable, if the business doesnt understand the need and the opportunity with utilizing cloud tools and technologies then we cant start pushing every technology and every solution down that path, he said.

Some applications will be a fit probably many, as IT seeks to reduce the cost burden surrounding upkeep of legacy systems, while simultaneously building in a new level of digital resiliency in response to the unexpected nature of the COVID-19 crisis.

Cloud vendors say the success of cloud-based responses to the pandemic helped to prove out the case for modernization. IT leaders may have already understood the value of cloud and SaaS, but now these organizations can point to tangible outcomes. They were able to serve their constituents overnight, Schroeder said.

Those who may have hesitated in the past either because of budgetary concerns or fears of breaking ties with their legacy provider have discovered those fears were groundless. We proved it all wrong, Schroeder said.

This argument that we cannot touch the mainframe well, we had to change it because it couldnt evolve to meet the pandemic requirements, and it worked, he said. It delivered unprecedented volumes of benefit. That will make people think about what else they can accomplish going forward. We are seeing the paradigm shift in motion.

Salesforce has worked with 35 states during the pandemic crisis, and has also seen those governments leverage cloud in ways that could support further SaaS implementations in the future.

Our customers will be able to take what theyre already doing and activate new capabilities for the next phase, said Coleman. Its about reopening the workplace safely and figuring out what digital channels need to be put in place [for citizens], in an environment where we still need to be social distancing, she said.

State CIOs agree that state-level cloud engagements will likely expand more rapidly in the post-COVID-19 world but only if theres enough bandwidth to go around. Connectivity will be a key factor in helping to determine how fast and how far they can push their cloud deployments.

Not every single spot has a broadband connection, Tong said. Not every single spot has good Wi-Fi, or a Wi-Fi connection at the speed and affordability that even many of our state employees could manage.

Barnes said connectivity proved a sticking point during the COVID-19 outbreak. Even getting employees to work from home in some of our rural areas was a bit of a challenge, he said. Its availability, reliability and affordability because even in some areas where there is sufficient coverage, its not always affordable to actually get connectivity and get those folks up and running.

The issue will likely need to be addressed in support of future cloud and SaaS efforts. You have to work very aggressively with the providers in your state to make sure that they realize and see that there is a priority of getting connections in an aggressive manner, he said.

Tong pointed to support from Internet service providers and even the FCC as possible means to bridge the gap where connectivity is lacking. This could mean pushing government documents across public Wi-Fi, and while this wouldnt be inherently risky, it would require a higher level of user awareness. Government workers would need to be taught what kinds of information can and cannot be shared across such a connection while still maintaining appropriate safeguards around privacy and security, she said.

That willingness to explore uncharted territory some might call it taking risks may be one fortuitous outcome of the tragedy of COVID-19.

We actually have this saying were on COVID-19 time meaning things that typically take two weeks, for example, to do, we need to do in two to three days, Tong said. Dont wait for that perfection. Take the risk. Do the best thinking and discovery, and be methodical as much as you can, and then just go. Move the ball forward.

Historically risk-averse, government had to act fast in the face of the pandemic. The fact that it was able to successfully shift on the fly may have emboldened some in government IT to pursue projects including cloud and SaaS that in the past may have seemed problematic.

Even before COVID-19, many state CIOs had cloud and SaaS high on their to-do lists. The NASCIO survey, for instance, found 92 percent of state IT leaders planned to expand their use of as-a-service models in the next three years. Those stats are supported by Center for Digital Government data from IT leaders in states, cities and counties alike. Looking ahead, state CIOs say they are widening that vision.

Beyond just putting cloud in place in situations where it is appropriate, they are thinking about new strategies for ensuring that those as-a-service solutions are robust enough not just to support todays uses, but to withstand tomorrows unforeseen needs.

We really need to start thinking into the future in case another event such as a pandemic hits, and how that solution will stand up against that, Jones said.

Healthcare Cloud Computing Market is Thriving Worldwide 2020 | Trends, Growth and Profit Analysis, Forecast by 2027 - The Daily Chronicle

COVID-19 Is Driving a Cloud Computing Surge That Will Only Continue | Opinion – Newsweek

Tech companies are booming. In earnings reports from the end of July, Amazon, Apple, Alphabet and Microsoft all beat expectations and posted rising revenues in a variety of their different products and services. Amazon had the most impressive showing, with an explosive $10.30 per share against the $1.50 predicted by analysts. The COVID-19 pandemic is reshaping every industry on the planet, and for Big Tech, that appears to be a positive for profit.

One of the fastest-growing services many of these companies offer is enterprise cloud computing, and coronavirus restrictions may be pushing demand for these products even higher. Overall revenue for the top cloud platforms is through the roof over the last two quarters in 2020. Amazon Web Services, the leading cloud computing provider in the world, saw 33 percent and 29 percent growth in their first and second earnings reports of 2020. Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud had even greater increases of around 50 percent each quarter.

The increase in cloud revenue for Big Tech is an amplification of a decade-long trend. Companies are spending more on outsourcing their computing needs, and in the last 10 years, enterprise spending on cloud services have increased by over 8,500 percent, going from $1.1 billion in 2009 to $96.4 billion in 2019. Overall spending on cloud storage and IT infrastructure is quickly replacing non-cloud solutions in the form of physical servers and computers owned by a company.

COVID-19 is proving to be the ultimate test for cloud providers and business cloud users. Employees from companies across many industries are now spread throughout the world due to office closures and restrictions, and remote work is expected to be on par with normal productivity. So far, cloud computing is meeting the challenge and giving companies easy-to-access storage, tools, IT and other services now almost essential for a modern business.

Cloud computing for businesses can be broken down into three main services: infrastructure (IaaS), software (SaaS) and platform (PaaS). Salesforce, a company founded with cloud enterprise services at the core of its business, specializes in SaaS by providing software and productivity tools over the cloud. Slack has a similar business model, housing its software and productivity tools on their servers for users to access anywhere. IaaS is another popular form of cloud computing, where companies like Amazon, Microsoft, Google and IBM own and manage servers for clients to use primarily for storage and complex networking. This is the most common solution for companies looking to save on costs associated with buying and maintaining their own servers and networking on a broad scale. PaaS is a step up from IaaS, giving clients access to complete hardware over the cloud to use on intensive projects like application development. From a broad perspective, large, expensive in-house hardware and software is replaced with similar specifications via the internet.

Look for the dominant services (SaaS and IaaS) to continue charting new territory for businesses looking to further digitize and stabilize their presence online. Whether it's for more effective communication with employees, access to essential applications and storage databases, or to expand business from physical sources to digital, cloud computing will play a key role in reshaping businesses and industries during a long COVID-19 economic recovery.
