VMware expands cloud services and cloning capabilities with Horizon 8 release – TechRepublic

The company also is beta testing new apps that use Bluetooth Low Energy beacons to support social distancing and capacity monitoring in office spaces.

VMware says its Horizon 8 release gives IT teams more tools to manage virtual desktop infrastructure with expanded options for cloud deployment and new RESTful APIs. The new features, introduced on Thursday, reflect the all-remote reality of the coronavirus pandemic and challenges that come with it. VMware is also developing services to help companies reopen office spaces, if and when that time comes.

SEE: Top cloud providers in 2020: AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud, hybrid, SaaS players (TechRepublic)

Horizon 8 is designed to put more management tools for the virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) in one place and to make it easier to scale VDI deployments, VMware said. The new features include:

VMware Horizon 8 lets IT teams use the same control plane to deploy and manage hybrid environments that extend to VMware Horizon Cloud on Microsoft Azure. VMware Horizon Cloud on Microsoft Azure supports the features of Microsoft Windows Virtual Desktop, including Windows 10 Enterprise multisession, and recently added support for VMware App Volumes.

Shannon Kalvar, IT service management and client virtualization for IDC, in the IDC MarketScape "Worldwide Virtual Client Computing 20192020 Vendor Assessment," wrote about VMWare that "Unifying physical device management (including PCs, Chromebooks, and phones), digital workspace creation/operations, and client workspace security into the overall platform is an attractive proposition for customers that are already invested in it."

The new Horizon 8 features will be available by the end of October 2020.

VMware says its new Workspace ONE Proximity and Workspace ONE Campus apps in the Workspace ONE platform will help office managers and HR professionals meet the requirements that the coronavirus pandemic has created. The Proximity app uses Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) beacons to monitor how people interact at the office to support contact tracing and social distancing. The Campus app uses the same beacon infrastructure to allow people to reserve meeting rooms and desks. The services are in beta now and VMware is testing them internally as employees return to work at corporate offices. VMware has not announced a release date for these apps.

Spelunky 2 has a cloning gun, flamethrower and turkeys – Eurogamer.net

Mossmouth doubles down on a game about stories andfriendship.

During last night's State of Play event, Derek Yu revealed a 15th September release date for Spelunky 2, the long-awaited sequel for the game that killed a billion pugs and launched a million roguelites.

Spelunky is a procedural dungeon-running platformer absolutely stuffed with secrets. Part of its appeal is that its clockwork world is made from simple pieces but can go wrong very explosively in ways that always make sense in retrospect. Thomasina was wrong: you can stir things apart. You just can't do anything about them. Actually, maybe Thomasina was right.

Anyway, isn't it lovely to have a release date? More importantly, though, Derek Yu's fantastic trailer - truly one of the best I have ever seen for a forthcoming game - chose to foreground what he thinks was special about the first Spelunky and what has been done to deepen those things this time around.

And as Yu has it, Spelunky is a game about stories and friendship - the stories of things that happen to you on each run, and the friends you share those stories and the game itself with. So expect more complex, richer elements, such as branching paths and what look like a greater focus on set-piece puzzles. Expect fluid dynamics that sees lava and water dropping from one pool into the rest of the world when you bomb the bottom of a basin. And expect collectable characters who hang around at a sort of hub world to provide a sense of camaraderie - I think that's what he was getting at anyway.

There's a wonderful bit with collecting turkeys and a wonderful bit with a cloning gun and a wonderful bit with a flamethrower and - oh, it's all wonderful. Spelunky 2 will hit PlayStation 4 on 15th September, then. It's also coming to PC. When? Nobody knows!

Criminals Find a Way to Clone EMV Cards – Decipher

The shift from payment cards with magnetic stripes to EMV chips was supposed to stomp out card cloning, except cybercriminals appear to have figured out a workaround.

With magnetic stripe cards, it was relatively easy for criminals to collect the information and copy onto a cloned card. In contrast, the EMV chip on the payment card encrypted the card number and personally identifiable information, making it harder to steal the data and create a cloned card. The EMV technology is also designed to generate a unique encryption key for each transaction where the card is present, so even if the criminal somehow had the card information, the encryption key to validate the transaction would be missing.

However, many companies still havent fully implemented EMV card readers, five years after the switch to EMV cards. That means card issuers have had to encode the card information on both the magnetic stripe and the EMV chip so that people can use the card both waysinserting the card in to the card reader or swiping the card. This is necessary for those situations when the user is in a country that doesnt have EMV terminals, or has to use an older point-of-sale terminal.

There is a subtle difference, though, because the magnetic stripe contains the card verification value (CVV), the three-digit code that is frequently printed on the back of the card, and the chip stores the a different code called the integrated circuit card verification value (iCVV).

Cybercriminals have been creating counterfeit cards by copying the EMV detailsincluding the iCVVonto the magnetic stripe. Since some banks dont verify that the magnetic stripe has the CVV and that the EMV chip has the iCVV, the criminals are able to use the magnetic stripe cards containing the EMV data, said cybersecurity company Gemini Advisory.

EMV technology may have changed the underground market for CP [card-present] records, but EMV-Bypass Cloning has opened the door for cybercriminals to sidestep the central security features of EMV chips and channel a new source of CP cards back into the underground CP market, Gemini Advisory said.

The fact that this was possible to do has been known since 2008,but the assumption was that banks would shift all their customers to using EMV cards and that magnetic stripe cards would disappear because everyone would have EMV point-of-sale terminals. The official switchover was back in 2015, and the idea was that banks would verify transactions carefully until a time when magnetic stripe cards would no longer be needed. The fact that some banks were not verifying CVV and iCVV correctly created this loophole.

It is looking very likely that this technique is already being used, Gemini Advisory said. Analysts looked at two recent incidents where criminals breached point-of-sale systems at supermarket chain Key Food Stores and liquor store Mega Package Store and captured EMV data for more than 720,000 payment cards. The magnetic stripe clones with the stolen data could be used in card-present transactions if the issuing bank doesnt properly verify the CVV.

While analysts have not found dark web chatter highlighting EMV-Bypass Cloning or malware capable of capturing such data from EMV-enabled POS devices, the Key Food Stores and Mega Package Store breaches came from two unrelated dark web sources, Gemini Advisory said. This indicates that the technique used to compromise this data is likely spreading across different criminal groups.

Gemini Advisorys findings comes shortly after researchers at Cyber R&D lab examined Visa and MasterCards issued by 11 banks in the United States, United Kingdom, and a few other countries in the European Union and found four cards were not properly verified. Researchers were able to make transactions using counterfeit magnetic stripe cards that were generated with data collected from EMV chip cards because those card issuers did not catch the fact that the cards were using iCVV instead of CVV.

In the past, cybercriminals typically did not target EMV data because there wasnt a clear way to monetize the information. The fact that the criminals are increasingly trying to steal EMV data suggests that is no longer the case. For example, Visa issued a warning recently that known point-of-sale malware families such as Alina, Dexter, and TinyLoader have been stealing payment card data from EMV chip-enabled point-of-sale terminals, according to Brian Krebs of KrebsonSecurity.com.

This problem can be solved. The banks need to verify which code is being used when approving payment transactions.

A higher verification standard involving data checks would raise the threshold of access and undercut fraudulent card use, Gemini Advisory concluded. EMV-Bypass Cloning is dangerously effective, but through policy review and higher verification standards, card providers and financial institutions can close the security gaps that this method exploits and restore the security integrity of EMV chips.

Audio Deepfakes: Can Anyone Tell If Theyre Fake? – How-To Geek

LuckyStep/Shutterstock

Video deepfakes mean you cant trust everything you see. Now, audio deepfakes might mean you can no longer trust your ears. Was that really the president declaring war on Canada? Is that really your dad on the phone asking for his email password?

Add another existential worry to the list of how our own hubris might inevitably destroy us. During the Reagan era, the only real technological risks were the threat of nuclear, chemical, and biological warfare.

In the following years, weve had the opportunity to obsess about nanotechs gray goo and global pandemics. Now, we have deepfakespeople losing control over their likeness or voice.

Most of us have seen avideo deepfake, in which deep-learning algorithms are used to replace one person with someone elses likeness. The best are unnervingly realistic, and now its audios turn. An audio deepfake is when a cloned voice that is potentially indistinguishable from the real persons is used to produce synthetic audio.

Its like Photoshop for voice, said Zohaib Ahmed, CEO of Resemble AI, about his companys voice-cloning technology.

However, bad Photoshop jobs are easily debunked. A security firm we spoke with said people usually only guess if an audio deepfake is real or fake with about 57 percent accuracyno better than a coin flip.

Additionally, because so many voice recordings are of low-quality phone calls (or recorded in noisy locations), audio deepfakes can be made even more indistinguishable. The worse the sound quality, the harder it is to pick up those telltale signs that a voice isnt real.

But why would anyone need a Photoshop for voices, anyway?

Theres actually an enormous demand for synthetic audio. According to Ahmed, the ROI is very immediate.

This is particularly true when it comes to gaming. In the past, speech was the one component in a game that was impossible to create on-demand. Even in interactive titles with cinema-quality scenes rendered in real time, verbal interactions with nonplaying characters are always essentially static.

Now, though, technology has caught up. Studios have the potential to clone an actors voice and use text-to-speech engines so characters can say anything in real time.

There are also more traditional uses in advertising, and tech and customer support. Here, a voice that sounds authentically human and responds personally and contextually without human input is whats important.

Voice-cloning companies are also excited about medical applications. Of course, voice replacement is nothing new in medicineStephen Hawking famously used a robotic synthesized voice after losing his own in 1985. However, modern voice cloning promises something even better.

In 2008, synthetic voice company, CereProc, gave late film critic, Roger Ebert, his voice back after cancer took it away. CereProc had published a web page that allowed people to type messages that would then be spoken in the voice of former President George Bush.

Ebert saw that and thought, well, if they could copy Bushs voice, they should be able to copy mine,' said Matthew Aylett, CereProcs chief scientific officer. Ebert then asked the company to create a replacement voice, which they did by processing a large library of voice recordings.

It was one of the first times anyone had ever done that and it was a real success, Aylett said.

In recent years, a number of companies (including CereProc) have worked with the ALS Association on Project Revoiceto provide synthetic voices to those who suffer from ALS.

Voice cloning is having a moment right now, and a slew of companies are developing tools. Resemble AI and Descript have online demos anyone can try for free. You just record the phrases that appear onscreen and, in just a few minutes, a model of your voice is created.

You can thank AIspecifically, deep-learning algorithmsfor being able to match recorded speech to text to understand the component phonemes that make up your voice. It thenuses the resulting linguistic building blocks to approximate words it hasnt heard you speak.

The basic technology has been around for a while, but as Aylett pointed out, it required some help.

Copying voice was a bit like making pastry, he said. It was kind of hard to do and there were various ways you had to tweak it by hand to get it to work.

Developers needed enormous quantities of recorded voice data to get passable results. Then, a few years ago, the floodgates opened. Research in the field of computer vision proved to be critical. Scientists developed generative adversarial networks (GANs), which could, for the first time, extrapolate and make predictions based on existing data.

Instead of a computer seeing a picture of a horse and saying this is a horse, my model could now make a horse into a zebra, said Aylett. So, the explosion in speech synthesis now is thanks to the academic work from computer vision.

One of the biggest innovations in voice cloning has been the overall reduction in how much raw data is needed to create a voice. In the past, systems needed dozens or even hundreds of hours of audio. Now, however, competent voices can be generated from just minutes of content.

This technology, along with nuclear power, nanotech, 3D printing, and CRISPR, is simultaneously thrilling and terrifying. After all, there have already been cases in the news of people being duped by voice clones. In 2019, a company in the U.K. claimed it was tricked by an audio deepfake phone call into wiring money to criminals.

You dont have to go far to find surprisingly convincing audio fakes, either. YouTube channel Vocal Synthesis features well-known people saying things they never said, likeGeorge W. Bush reading In Da Club by 50 Cent. Its spot on.

Elsewhere on YouTube, you can hear a flock of ex-Presidents, including Obama, Clinton, and Reagan, rapping NWA. The music and background sounds help disguise some of the obvious robotic glitchiness, but even in this imperfect state, the potential is obvious.

We experimented with the tools onResemble AI and Descriptand created voice clone. Descript uses a voice-cloning engine that was originally called Lyrebird and was particularly impressive. We were shocked at the quality. Hearing your own voice say things you know youve never said is unnerving.

Theres definitely a robotic quality to the speech, but on a casual listen, most people would have no reason to think it was a fake.

We had even higher hopes for Resemble AI. It gives you the tools to create a conversation with multiple voices and vary the expressiveness, emotion, and pacing of the dialog. However, we didnt think the voice model captured the essential qualities of the voice we used. In fact, it was unlikely to fool anyone.

A Resemble AI rep told us most people are blown away by the results if they do it correctly. We built a voice model twice with similar results. So, evidently, its not always easy to make a voice clone you can use to pull off a digital heist.

Even so,Lyrebird (which is now part of Descript) founder, Kundan Kumar, feels weve already passed that threshold.

For a small percentage of cases, it is already there, Kumar said. If I use synthetic audio to change a few words in a speech, its already so good that you will have a hard time knowing what changed.

We can also assume this technology will only get better with time. Systems will need less audio to create a model, and faster processors will be able to build the model in real time. Smarter AI will learn how to add more convincing human-like cadence and emphasis on speech without having an example to work from.

Which means we might be creeping closer to the widespread availability of effortless voice cloning.

Most companies working in this space seem poised to handle the technology in a safe, responsible way. Resemble AI, for example, has an entire Ethics section on its website, and the following excerpt is encouraging:

We work with companies through a rigorous process to make sure that the voice they are cloning is usable by them and have the proper consents in place with voice actors.

Likewise,Kumar said Lyrebird was concerned about misuse from the start. Thats why now, as a part of Descript, it only allows people to clone their own voice. In fact, both Resemble and Descript require that people record their samples live to prevent nonconsensual voice-cloning.

Its heartening that the major commercial players have imposed some ethical guidelines. However, its important to remember these companies arent gatekeepers of this technology. There are a number of open-source tools already in the wild, for which there are no rules. According to Henry Ajder, head of threat intelligence atDeeptrace, you also dont need advanced coding knowledge to misuse it.

Alot of the progress in the space has come through collaborative work in places like GitHub, using open-source implementations of previously published academic papers, Ajder said. It can be used by anyone whos got moderate proficiency in coding.

Criminals have tried to steal money by phone long before voice cloning was possible, and security experts have always been on call to detect and prevent it. Security company Pindrop tries to stop bank fraud by verifying if a caller is who he or she claims to be from the audio. In 2019 alone, Pindrop claims to have analyzed 1.2 billion voice interactions and prevented about $470 million in fraud attempts.

Before voice cloning, fraudsters tried a number of other techniques. The simplest was just calling from elsewhere with personal info about the mark.

Our acoustic signature allows us to determine that a call is actually coming from a Skype phone in Nigeria because of the sound characteristics, said Pindrop CEO, Vijay Balasubramaniyan. Then, we can compare that knowing the customer uses an AT&T phone in Atlanta.

Some criminals have also made careers out of using background sounds to throw off banking reps.

Theres a fraudster we called Chicken Man who always had roosters going in the background, said Balasubramaniyan. And there is one lady who used a baby crying in the background to essentially convince the call center agents, that hey, I am going through a tough time to get sympathy.

And then there are the male criminals who go after womens bank accounts.

They use technology to increase the frequency of their voice, to sound more feminine, Balasubramaniyan explained. These can be successful, but occasionally, the software messes up and they sound like Alvin and the Chipmunks.

Of course, voice cloning is just the latest development in this ever-escalating war. Security firms have already caught fraudsters using synthetic audio in at least one spearfishing attack.

With the right target, the payout can be massive, Balasubramaniyan said. So, it makes sense to dedicate the time to create a synthesized voice of the right individual.

When it comes to recognizing if a voice has been faked, theres both good and bad news. The bad is that voice clones are getting better every day. Deep-learning systems are getting smarter and making more authentic voices that require less audio to create.

As you can tell from this clip of President Obama telling MC Ren to take the stand, weve also already gotten to the point where a high-fidelity, carefully constructed voice model can sound pretty convincing to the human ear.

The longer a sound clip is, the more likely you are to notice theres something amiss. For shorter clips, though, you might not notice its syntheticespecially if you have no reason to question its legitimacy.

The clearer the sound quality, the easier it is to notice signs of an audio deepfake. If someone is speaking directly into a studio-quality microphone, youll be able to listen closely. But a poor-quality phone call recording or a conversation captured on a handheld device in a noisy parking garage will be much harder to evaluate.

The good news is, even if humans have trouble separating real from fake, computers dont have the same limitations. Fortunately, voice verification tools already exist. Pindrop has one that pits deep-learning systems against one another. It uses both to discover if an audio sample is the person its supposed to be. However, it also examines if a human can even make all the sounds in the sample.

Depending on the quality of the audio, every second of speech contains between 8,000-50,000 data samples that can be analyzed.

The things that were typically looking for are constraints on speech due to human evolution, explained Balasubramaniyan.

For example, two vocal sounds have a minimum possible separation from one another. This is because it isnt physically possible to say them any faster due to the speed with which the muscles in your mouth and vocal cords can reconfigure themselves.

When welook at synthesized audio,Balasubramaniyan said, we sometimes see things and say, this could never have been generated by a human because the only person who could have generated this needs to have a seven-foot-long neck.

Theres also a class of sound called fricatives. Theyre formed when air passes through a narrow constriction in your throat when you pronounce letters like f, s, v, and z.Fricatives are especially hard for deep-learning systems to master because the software has trouble differentiating them from noise.

So, at least for now, voice-cloning software is stumbled by the fact that humans are bags of meat that flow air through holes in their body to talk.

I keep joking that deepfakes are very whiney, said Balasubramaniyan. He explained that its very hard for algorithms to distinguish the ends of words from background noise in a recording. This results in many voice models with speech that trails off more than humans do.

When an algorithm sees this happening a lot, Balasubramaniyan said, statistically, it becomes more confident its audio thats been generated as opposed to human.

Resemble AI is also tackling the detection problem head-on with the Resemblyzer, an open-source deep-learning tool available on GitHub. It can detect fake voices and perform speaker verification.

Its always difficult to guess what the future might hold, but this technology will almost certainly only get better. Also, anyone could potentially be a victimnot just high-profile individuals, like elected officials or banking CEOs.

I think were on the brink of the first audio breach where peoples voices get stolen, Balasubramaniyan predicted.

At the moment, though, the real-world risk from audio deepfakes is low. There are already tools that appear to do a pretty good job of detecting synthetic video.

Plus, most people arent at risk of an attack. According to Ajder, the main commercial players are working on bespoke solutions for specific clients, and most have fairly good ethics guidelines as to who they would and would not work with.

The real threat lies ahead, though, as Ajder went on to explain:

Pandoras Box will be people cobbling together open-source implementations of the technology into increasingly user-friendly, accessible apps or services that dont have that kind of ethical layer of scrutiny that commercial solutions do at the moment.

This is probably inevitable, but security companies are already rolling fake audio detection into their toolkits. Still, staying safe requires vigilance.

Weve done this in other security areas, said Ajder. A lot of organizations spend a lot of time trying to understand whats the next zero-day vulnerability, for example. Synthetic audio is simply the next frontier.

Congress grills Facebook over its acquisitions and feature cloning – Engadget

Zuckerberg expanded on the idea in another email. We can likely always just buy any competitive startups. But itll be a while before we can buy Google, he wrote. Later, when asked about the quote, Zuckerberg said he didnt remember writing the note, but said it sounds like a joke.

It wasnt the only incident Zuckerberg claimed not to remember.

Some of the most intense questioning on the subject came from Washington Democrat Rep. Pramila Jayapal, who repeatedly asked Zuckerberg about Facebook's strategy of trying to copy competing apps. It led to a rather incredible exchange, in which Jayapal asked about Zuckerbergs interactions with former Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom and Snapchat founder Evan Spiegel, both of which Zuckerberg said he didnt recall.

Has Facebook ever threatened to clone the products of another company while also attempting to acquire that company, Jayapal asked. Not that I recall, Zuckerberg said, prompting Jayapal to remind the CEO that he was under oath.

She then asked Zuckerberg if he had used Facebook Camera to threaten Systrom into agreeing to an acquisition.

Im not sure what you would mean by threaten, Zuckeberg said.

Were there any other companies you used this same tactic with, she asked, pointing to Snapchat and Zuckerbergs well-documented pursuit of the company.

I dont remember those specific conversations, he said.

Jayapal ended the questioning by calling Facebook a case study in monopoly power.

Your company harvests and monetizes our data, and then your company uses that data to spy on competitors and copy, acquire and kill rivals, she said. Youve used Facebooks power to threaten smaller competitors and to ensure that you always get your way. These tactics reinforce Facebooks dominance, which you then use in increasingly destructive ways. So Facebooks very model makes it impossible for new companies to flourish separately and that harms our democracy.

Zuckerberg wasn't the only CEO in attendance to face questions about his companys acquisitions. Google CEO Sundar Pichai was also hit with tough questions around Googles acquisition, and subsequent merger with DoubleClick.

And Amazons Jeff Bezos was asked about Amazons pursuit of diapers.com, and its plan to win against the competing online retailer, which eventually resulted in Amazon buying the company. Bezos, like Zuckerberg, cited a faulty memory.

Youre asking a lot of my memory, he said.

This Is How A Deepfake Voice Clone Sounds Like (Clip Taken From A Real Scam) – Digital Information World

You may have seen it in the movies before but the strange application of deep fakes is here in the form of new audio deepfake scam. Hackers are taking advantage of the AI technology to clone a persons voice and then with the help of social engineering techniques, they are making people move their money wherever the bad actors want.

As such scams have gained headlines, there has always been one concern of how good the voice clones are that make attackers easily target whoever they want. While we had never really heard any audio coming from any deepfake scam, a security consulting firm NISOS has released one audio clip that was sent to an employee in a tech firm (whose name is not provided)

In the clip, you would hear the attacker speaking like the companys CEO to fool the employee into providing help regarding an urgent business deal. The quality is no so great and even sounds slight robotic but still it is passable. Furthermore, if you are a junior employee of any organization and your boss orders you to do something, you wouldnt really care about whether the call is fake or original in the given circumstances.

According to Rob Volkert, a researcher at NISOS, the voice turned out to be more human when they checked the box but they were not sure whether it sounded really like the CEO.

Fortunately, the attack was an unsuccessful one because the employee who received the call immediately figured out that it was suspicious and told about it to the firms legal department. That being said, such attacks are bound to happen in more numbers because deepfake tools are becoming more easily accessible.

If you want to create a voice clone then all you need is lots of recordings of the specific person. With lots of data, you can easily improve the audio quality and eventually, the result of the whole scam would be pretty much in your favor. In fact, recordings of such senior executives can be taken easily as they often have to socialize in the form of giving interviews and speeches.

The best and probably the biggest deep fake scam took place in 2019 when the Cheif Executive of a UK Energy Firm was asked to send 220,000 ($240,000) to a Hungarian supplier within an hour by supposedly the CEO of his companys parent firm in Germany. He sent the money like a good CEO and later no one has been able to catch the attackers to date.

Earlier in 2020, the FTC has started warning people about the deepfake audio scams. There is also an easy way out to spot a scam call as revealed by Patrick Traynor of the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering who suggests that people should hang up the phone and call the person back to confirm if the orders are true.

If your luck is bad only then you would be connected to the same state actor who might have the access to reroute phone calls by now. Otherwise, you will always be safe with this little trick.

How to git clone on Ubuntu with GitLab and GitHub – TheServerSide.com

Im not one of those software developers that shuns a Windows based GUI and portends that every operation performed on a computer is best performed using a command prompt or the BASH shell. But I can tell you that if you want to do version control with Git, the terminal window in Ubuntu is the best place to do it. Let me demonstrate that by demonstrating how to perform an Ubuntu git clone operation, taking all of the content from both a GitHub and a GitLab repository and copying it all down to my local machine.

The following is the list of steps required to perform an Ubuntu Git clone:

The commands used in the Ubuntu git clone example where the target was a GitLab project are as follows:

The process of cloning a GitHub repo in Ubuntu isnt that much different. Since the first set of commands installed Git and performed the one-off config operations, the set of commands is more compact:

You can find these repositories on GitHub and GitLab.

Cloning: Types, Technique, Animals and More

Cloning is the process of creating genetically identical copies of biological matter. This may include genes, cells, tissues or entire organisms.

Some organisms generate clones naturally through asexual reproduction. Plants, algae, fungi, and protozoa produce spores that develop into new individuals that are genetically identical to the parent organism. Bacteria are capable of creating clones through a type of reproduction called binary fission. In binary fission, the bacterial DNA is replicated and the original cell is divided into two identical cells.

Natural cloning also occurs in animal organisms during processes such as budding (offspring grows out of the body of the parent), fragmentation (the body of the parent breaks into distinct pieces, each of which can produce an offspring), and parthenogenesis. In humans and other mammals, the formation of identical twins is a type of natural cloning. In this case, two individuals develop from one fertilized egg.

When we speak of cloning, we typically think of organism cloning, but there are actually three different types of cloning.

Cloning techniques are laboratory processes used to produce offspring that are genetically identical to the donor parent. Clones of adult animals are created by a process called somatic cell nuclear transfer. In this process, the nucleus from a somatic cell is removed and placed into an egg cell that has had its nucleus removed. A somatic cell is any type of body cell other than a sex cell.

What are the risks of cloning? One of the main concerns as it relates to human cloning is that the current processes used in animal cloning are only successful a very small percentage of the time. Another concern is that the cloned animals that do survive tend to have various health problems and shorter lifespans. Scientists have not yet figured out why these problems occur and there is no reason to think that these same problems wouldn't happen in human cloning.

Should humans be cloned? Should human cloning be banned? A major objection to human cloning is that cloned embryos are used to produce embryonic stem cells and the cloned embryos are ultimately destroyed. The same objections are raised with regard to stem cell therapy research that uses embryonic stem cells from non-cloned sources. Changing developments in stem cell research, however, could help ease concerns over stem cell use. Scientists have developed new techniques for generating embryonic-like stem cells. These cells could potentially eliminate the need for human embryonic stem cells in therapeutic research. Other ethical concerns about cloning involve the fact that the current process has a very high failure rate. According to the Genetic Science Learning Center, the cloning process only has a success rate of between 0.1 to 3 percent in animals.

How Cloning Works | HowStuffWorks

On Jan. 8, 2001, scientists at Advanced Cell Technology, Inc., announced the birth of the first clone of an endangered animal, a baby bull gaur (a large wild ox from India and southeast Asia) named Noah. Although Noah died of an infection unrelated to the procedure, the experiment demonstrated that it is possible to save endangered species through cloning.

Cloning is the process of making a genetically identical organism through nonsexual means. It has been used for many years to produce plants (even growing a plant from a cutting is a type of cloning).

Animal cloning has been the subject of scientific experiments for years, but garnered little attention until the birth of the first cloned mammal in 1996, a sheep named Dolly. Since Dolly, several scientists have cloned other animals, including cows and mice. The recent success in cloning animals has sparked fierce debates among scientists, politicians and the general public about the use and morality of cloning plants, animals and possibly humans.

In this article, we will examine how cloning works and look at possible uses of this technology.

Star Wars: 5 Things Attack Of The Clones Got Right (& 5 It Got Wrong) – Screen Rant

George Lucas divided the Star Wars fan base with The Phantom Menace. Contemporary children lapped it up, but adults who grew up with the original trilogy felt insulted by the campy tone. Lucas ignored his critics and boldly charged ahead with the prequel trilogy, following up Episode I with Attack of the Clones, which continued the journey toward the inevitable tragic downfall of Anakin Skywalker.

RELATED:Star Wars: 10 Greatest Moments In Attack Of The Clones, Ranked

Although Attack of the Clones is widely regarded to be the worst of the prequels, and was considered to be the worst Star Wars movie altogether until the sequel trilogy came along, it does have some redeeming value.

As with all the Star Wars prequels, Ewan McGregors portrayal of Obi-Wan Kenobi is infinitely charismatic. Instead of trying to emulate Alec Guinness, McGregor presented his own take on the character, while maintaining the dry charm that originally defined Guinness performance.

RELATED:Star Wars: 5 Things Ewan McGregor Brought (& 5 Things Alec Guinness Brought) To Obi-Wan Kenobi

In Attack of the Clones, Obi-Wan leads his own subplot as he investigates the creation of the Clone Army and stumbles into a widespread Sith conspiracy.

George Lucas is the first to admit that he doesnt write great dialogue particularly romantic dialogue and he even allowed Hayden Christensen and Natalie Portman to rewrite their own lines on the set of Attack of the Clones. Still, their romantic scenes are pretty cringeworthy.

There have been defenses of this pointing out that Anakin was raised as a slave and therefore has limited social skills, but what still doesnt make sense is Padm falling head over heels for Anakin when the cringe factor never goes away.

As with any entry in the Skywalker saga, Attack of the Clones can be counted on for some breathtaking musical compositions courtesy of the great John Williams.

No matter how banal the romantic dialogue shared by Anakin and Padm is throughout the movie, Across the Stars, the Williams track that plays over their wedding in the films final moments (and when theyre being taken to their deaths in the Geonosian arena), captures the Shakespearean beauty of their forbidden, star-crossed love.

This is a problem that permeates throughout the prequel trilogy, but especially in Attack of the Clones. While The Phantom Menace was forced to use some practical techniques by technological restrictions and the computer-generated effects in Revenge of the Sith were sharper and more refined, Attack of the Clones is the worst of both worlds.

RELATED:Star Wars: Ranking All The Villains In The Prequel Trilogy

To say that Lucas overused primitive CGI throughout this movie would be an understatement. There isnt a single clone played by a physical actor in the entire movie; theyre all CG. Some scenes were entirely computer-generated.

George Lucas maintains that Jar Jar Binks is his favorite Star Wars character, but the fan base clearly wasnt as warm to him from his slapstick-laden debut in The Phantom Menace. Kids enjoyed his antics, but teenagers and adults rolled their eyes.

In Attack of the Clones, Jar Jar wasnt eradicated entirely, but Lucas did tone him down and figure out a manageable amount to keep him around that would stay on the side of lovable without veering into cringe territory.

Throughout Attack of the Clones, the slapstick comedy that Jar Jar brought to The Phantom Menace is instead given to C-3PO and R2-D2. After getting separated in a droid factory, Threepios head gets attached to a battle droids body and Artoo sets out to put him back together.

This subplot is filled with dreadful puns (This is such a drag, Im quite beside myself, etc.) and cringeworthy gags that belong in a cartoon.

Ben Burtt is the sound design genius who gave us the hum of a lightsaber, the crack of Indiana Jones whip, and the synthetic, yet sympathetic voice of WALL-E. On top of his usual iconic sound effects, like the voice of R2-D2, Burtt added some new mesmerizing sounds to the library in Attack of the Clones, like Obi-Wans seismic charge.

In addition to the prequels sound design, Burtt worked as an editor on the films. He worked with co-editors on The Phantom Menace and Revenge of the Sith, but tackled editing duties on Attack of the Clones solo.

The mystery behind the cloning operation on Kamino ended up being dropped from Revenge of the Sith, because Lucas realized he bit off more than he could chew in Attack of the Clones.

The movie has too many villains, too. There was no reason for Jango Fett to outsource the assassination of Padm to Zam Wesell, who in turn outsourced it to a droid, after Nute Gunray outsourced it to Fett. Its the only prequel for which Lucas recruited a co-writer to help figure out the plot; he shouldve seen that as a sign that it was getting too complicated.

The plot threads of Attack of the Clones all converge in a spectacular final battle in which Star Wars fans get everything but the kitchen sink in their favorite galaxy far, far away. Obi-Wan reunites with Anakin and Padm as theyre shackled up in a gladiatorial arena and fed to some monsters for the Geonosians amusement.

From there, the entire Jedi Order takes on the Separatists entire droid army, Yoda shows up with the Republics Clone Army, and Obi-Wan, Anakin, and Yoda confront Count Dooku.

Although he would eventually settle into the role of Anakin Skywalker with more theatrical flair in Revenge of the Sith, Hayden Christensens acting in Attack of the Clones was depressingly wooden.

To be fair to him, I dont like sand, is a difficult line to bring nuance to, but Christensen didnt do anything to elevate Lucas dialogue like his co-stars Ewan McGregor, Natalie Portman, and Samuel L. Jackson did.

Thousands of these self-cloning ticks have been known to attack animals. They’re now in Kentucky – messenger-inquirer

Pet and livestock owners be aware: an invasive species of tick that can reproduce without mating and is known to attack animals in large numbers has been found in Kentucky.

The Asian longhorned tick has been found in Martin and Floyd counties in Eastern Kentucky and in Metcalfe County in south-central Kentucky, according to a news release from the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture, Food and Environment.

This tick is an aggressive biter and frequently builds intense infestations on domestic hosts that can cause stress, reduced growth and severe blood loss, Jonathan Larson, UK extension entomologist, said in the release. One reason for their rapid buildup is that the female ticks can lay eggs without mating. It only takes a single fed female tick to create a population of ticks. Potentially, thousands can be found on an animal.

While small numbers of the ticks have been found on elk in Martin County and black bear in Floyd County, the Asian longhorned ticks in Metcalfe County were discovered in large numbers on a bull, according to the news release issued Tuesday.

The Metcalfe County ticks were submitted by a veterinarian who answered a call about a bull so infested that it was showing signs of severe fatigue, Anna Pasternak, a UK entomology graduate student who manages the Kentucky Tick Surveillance Program, said in the release.

The UK Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory confirmed Asian longhorn ticks in the sample from the veterinarian, and Pasternak and a student from the UK College of Public Health found more of the ticks in the field.

With the first two findings being in Eastern Kentucky, the Metcalfe County finding is particularly troubling as it means the tick may have already spread farther across the state, Pasternak said.

Aside from cattle, livestock including horses, sheep, goats and chickens can be affected by the ticks, as can cats and dogs, according to UK.

UK said that as they become more established in Kentucky, Asian longhorn ticks are also likely to negatively affect deer and other wildlife populations. They are known to bite deer and elk, as well as raccoons, possums, coyotes, foxes, groundhogs, Canada geese, cottontail rabbits, red-tailed hawks and skunks, UK said.

Research is being done to determine what diseases the ticks might spread among animals.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the Asian longhorned tick appears to be less attracted to human hosts compared to other ticks commonly found in the United States.

More study is needed to determine how likely they are to pass diseases on to humans, according to the CDC.

There are two kinds of Asian longhorned ticks, according to Rutgers University. One form has both males and females, but the other reproduces through parthenogenesis during which females are able to essentially clone themselves, laying eggs that develop into mature ticks without the presence of a male.

The Asian longhorned ticks in the United States as well as the populations in Australia and New Zealand where they have caused significant losses to cattle farmers are the self-cloning kind, which allows them to spread efficiently, according to Rutgers. A recently-published study led by Rutgers researchers found that the U.S. populations likely began with three or more female ticks from northeast Asia.

Once in the United States, they were probably carried from place to place by wildlife, livestock and pets. The researchers said dogs in particular are effective carriers that allow ticks to cross state and international lines.

Many countries require dogs to be treated for ticks and other parasites before entering the country, but the United States does not. We urge greater awareness of this issue to prevent future exotic tick introductions, said Dina Fonseca, the studys senior author and director of the Rutgers University Center for Vector Biology.

Asian longhorned ticks were first discovered in the United States in 2017 in New Jersey, though they had likely been here for several years previously. They also have been found in Arkansas, Delaware, Connecticut, Maryland, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee and West Virginia, according to UK.

The CDC says researchers are looking for the ticks to determine where they have spread and what types of environments they prefer.

Asian longhorned ticks are small and reddish-brown, and they lack distinctive markings.

People who find a large number of ticks on pets or livestock should contact their veterinarian, and people who think they may have found an Asian longhorned tick should work with their county extension agent to get the tick submitted to UK entomologists for testing, the UK release stated.

People can use tick repellents and check themselves and their pets after outdoor activity to reduce the likelihood of tick bites.

New Star Wars Theory Explains Why Palpatine Had So Many Snoke Clones – We Got This Covered

Whats the deal with Snoke? Thats a question Star Wars fans were asking for years before the end of the Sequel Trilogy, and its something theyre still asking even after its concluded. Both The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi left the backstory of the big, evil boss of the First Order vague, but The Rise of Skywalkerpulled a major revelation out of its hat in a very throwaway manner in its opening scenes: Snoke was a clone puppet for the secretly still-alive Palpatine.

Ok, so Snoke is just a clone that Darth Sidious somehow controlled, but that doesnt explain why he had several dead Snoke carcasses hanging around his lair on Exegol, or even why he created such a desiccated and clearly malformed puppet in the first place. ScreenRant has done some digging in the old Expanded Universe, however, and may have come up with an explanation that neatly fits with what we know.

In 1991sDark Empirecomic series, its revealed that the Dark Side has a deleterious effect on clone bodies. This is explained fuller in the Jedi Vs. Sithhandbook, which says: because the clones are one step removed from the natural life process itself, they are much more vulnerable to the effects of the dark side, and age at an extremely accelerated rate.

Though this does relate to the EU and so may no longer be canon, the Dark Sides negative effects on clones does add up perfectly with both Snokes appearances and the excess Snokes Kylo Ren sees when he tracks down Palpatine. Exegol is a nexus of dark Force power, so its no wonder Snoke was so emaciated and clearly tricky to create. In fact, this also explains Palpatines own struggles with forming himself a healthy clone body.

Without the deterioration of both his own forms and the Snoke clones, Palpatine probably wouldve preferred to have had a bigger presence in the galaxy before the announcement of the Final Order. If we can take this theory as true, though, he was forced to keep to the shadows as both himself and Snoke as he tried and failed to perfect the cloning process.
