The new provision holds that there wouldnt be any need for new licenses for operators who already possess the critical gaming supply or gaming service license when they want to start offering products that are captured by a different class of license.

The MGA also delved into ad hoc responsible gambling audits in 2019.

For Faruggia, through these audits, the firm has been able to ensure that the lawful safeguards that each license enforces are effective and that they keep relaying information to the authority on how best to protect the vulnerable in the sector.

In 2019, the regulator gained 81.7m, which is an 8.6% increase. Most of the funds were from levies and compliance contributions, and it had an 8.1% increase. Day two of the SBC Digital Summit North America saw panellists look at the new world order of sports betting in a post-COVID landscape, and how alternative markets on virtual sports and esports have cemented themselves as key offerings for US sportsbooks.

The Time to Shine? The New Sporting Outlook panel, sponsored by Sporting Solutions, tackled the challenges for the betting industry over the last few months due to the cancellation of live sports, looking at what has taken bettors fancy and the pitfalls that have surrounded unusual sports.

The panel brought together Paris Smith, CEO of Pinnacle; Bryan Bennett, COO of Betfred USA Sports; Edward Moed, CEO of HPL Digital Sports; Simon Trim, CEO of Sporting Solutions; and was moderated by Dustin Gouker, Head of Content, US at Catena Media.

While the pandemic has undoubtedly been a challenging period, Smith explained that the last few months have given Pinnacle the opportunity to refine its offering and strengthen its commitment to integrity.

She said: For Pinnacle, weve placed more of a focus on esports. It was certainly a good time to have rest-of-world business. The interesting part about seeing a growth of interest in table tennis was that it was so labor intensive, which made it possible to offer a market on that.

We did take the time to really refine our modelling for esports and product offering. Obviously virtual sports and casino have also seen considerable growth, and became more of a forefront for Pinnacle than it has done previously.

With esports, hopefully the way that people view the sport will change. I think that its going to gain a lot more openings in places like Las Vegas, maybe New Jersey. The one thing that I have found interesting from the US perspective is that they were prohibiting some of the table tennis sports [due to integrity concerns].

On the esports side, from all of the different leagues that we had and having so many more eyes on it, it actually improved the integrity side of things for us it improved our ability to manage that better and put in new models and systems in place to help strengthen our integrity. Moving forward, that will be hugely helpful for us.

Allowing a sportsbook to offer virtual sports or virtual racing is not something included in the regulations right now and wasnt something they were willing to introduce quickly either. It was a prime opportunity for virtual sports in the US if ever there was one, it just wasnt possible from a regulatory standpoint and so were left waiting for that to happen.

Echoing Bennetts idea that regulatory differences have hindered the growth of virtual sports, Gouker said: To some extent, New Jersey already classifies virtual sports as a casino product rather than a sportsbook product. I think everyone would agree that virtuals would have done really well over here in the US if they had been adapted and gone live here a little earlier but hopefully were going to have real sports back here soon.

Trim took somewhat of a different approach to offering esports markets however, warning operators that the target demographic differs somewhat from the traditional sports bettor. According to him, offering markets on esports can also be much more difficult to generate a profit.

He explained: With esports in particular, what we find is that you dont get a lot of recreational clients in the same way that you do for soccer or American sports. What you do get are sharper clients which know the fastest streams, and theyre essentially trying to pick you off. So if you do supply a market on this, you need the very best traders, prices.

It is good for turnover. But in the same way that turnover is vanity and profit is sanity, for sportsbooks esports is much harder to make money on than other sports out there.

The hiatus has offered fresh insights into the bettor experience in US sportsbooks, shining a fresh light on building trust and engagement with customers, said Moed. The key to this is to avoid the sea of sameness and innovate when it comes to marketing strategies.

He said: I would say that the number one thing that sports bettors are telling us is that the experience has to change. This crosses over from sportsbooks to fantasy, where there is a 90% crossover. Theyre feeling more of a sea of sameness in a lot of sportsbooks. And the way that they look at it is that pre-COVID was the first wave of going to see sportsbooks, experience it, visiting different sportsbooks, but to build our trust and our engagement, that experience must become much better.

This can happen in a few ways. We do a lot in the marketing and brand communications area. It really is about brand awareness to grab their attention and build trust. Coming out of the gates as sports make a return in the US, theres undoubtedly going to be so much marketing. But most players do the same thing, with look-alike campaigns on social media. So do something different, whether its podcasts or how you work with affiliate partners, what concept you provide.

Following yesterday's piece explaining why affiliates in Great Britain should not be subject to a licensing regime, BonusFinder's Fintan Costello sets out why a regulatory framework would benefit the sector. Read the argument against here.

There is no hiding from the fact that we are seeing a new wave of regulation across the globe with numerous jurisdictions looking to regulate online gambling, including large parts of the US and Latin America, and Europes largest economy Germany.

At the same time, established markets such as Great Britain and Sweden are in the process of updating existing legislation and fast-tracking further restrictions on the industry.

Many areas of the industry have already adjusted to this approach with operators and suppliers bolstering compliance teams ahead of, or in response to, tougher licensing, advertising restrictions and stricter player protection measures, or when forced to, even tackle multi-million pound fines.

However, one sector that has not had to invest in compliance or licensing (except for publicly traded entities), is affiliates. In general terms, we have largely had a free rein since the first bedroom pioneers realised traffic could be monetised, no matter where in the world that came from.

Two decades later and the momentum has firmly shifted from dot.com to dot.country, combined with a push for increased standards and an emphasis on player safety and responsible gaming, drastically changing the landscape and ensuring that almost every licensed facet of the industry is liable and responsible for its actions.

We have, until recently, not faced any such obligations, however with more countries such as the US opting to licence affiliates and others, such as the UK now floating the idea, there is a growing consensus that this is an inevitable path for the sector .

The devil will naturally be in the detail, but in principle, the advantages are clear and large swathes of our community are in favour. We can vouch for this first-hand having been through the US licensing process in five states, successfully securing them all.

We also recently joined Responsible Affiliates in Gambling (RAiG) whose aim is to foster wider initiatives in the GB affiliate sector to promote social responsibility and create a safer gambling environment for consumers.

This messaging is vital and fully aligned with the drive for change being seen across many of the worlds most important regulated markets. You only have to read the detail of the recent APPG and House of Lords reports to see that several measures will soon be in place to ensure players are further protected.

Taking responsibilityMany of us have already been voluntarily self-regulating. But to standardise and further professionalise our sector, many affiliates, ourselves included, feel that the right, and arguably the only way to achieve this, is for minimum requirements to be set out and implemented by a form of licensing or registration process.

Some will be concerned that licensing will bring further upfront costs and longer-term investment or require onerous amounts of time-consuming paperwork and additional resources. However, as RAiG suggests, this approach is designed to simply supplement an already extensive range of regulations. Moreover, such a system need not be expensive nor burdensome. You only have to look to the GB Gambling Commissions direct licensing of third-party suppliers, the provision of approved lists of Alternative Dispute Resolution providers and software testing houses to see the successes this has had.

The more registered, vetted, and licensed businesses within a market, be they brands, content aggregators or casino comparison sites, the more transparent, visible, and safer the jurisdiction for authorities and players. Combine this with common sense regulation and you have a proven model.

And for those that fear bureaucracy, anyone who has signed up for an affiliate programme in the UK will know this is very much like applying for a licence with information required on the company, its ultimate beneficiary or UBO, and marketing channels among other details.

If affiliates are licensed, we are both responsible and liable for our actions, but equally firmly in control of our own destiny with certifiable proof that our products and services are fully compliant the best of the best.

The positive knock-on effects are also evident. We are responsible, trusted suppliers, recommended by our peers. We generate increased regulated revenues and are accepted further into mainstream business as weve seen other affiliate groups do in the last few years, while our standards and reputation as a community continues to improve and grow in line with other licensed gaming stakeholders.

The positive impact of licensing doesnt end there with the burden on operator partners also considerably lowering.Today, operator compliance teams are in overdrive. If they arent busy shutting down the affiliate channel, they are micromanaging all the content published on their sites and dictating extensive requirements (which often conflict with other operators).

Partnering with a licensed affiliate would eliminate any of these scenarios, ensuring they work with trusted sources who are held to every T and every C within an affiliate licence and regulatory regime.

Level playing fieldThese are early days in discussions on affiliate licensing, but we strongly feel the time is right. Our area of the industry has operated independently for too long, without consistent standards and regulatory oversight, and it is vital we are as accountable, responsible, and as valued as our partners.

Clive Hawkswood, chairman of RAiG, rightly says, the aim must be to work with all stakeholders to ensure that any provisions (around licensing) are proportionate and, most important of all, effective in improving safeguards for consumers.

By licensing and using one voice under associations such as RAiG, and by sharing insights, experiences and data across all elements and areas of expertise, we can alter the course of our future. For the better. This change in mindset wont be easy for some, but we are convinced that those who dont adjust, who are resistant to change, or who continue to operate in the shadows of black markets will rapidly fade from view.

Bergman is a relentlessly positive man, and that comes from a conscious decision to smile more. Liggero Fontana asked why that is. Well first and foremost, I believe that smiling communicates that you are happy, and what that means is that if Im happy you are safe, because Im not going to attack you if Im smiling, he said. So I believe that being smiling communicates that the people around you are safe, and I believe thats something that sets an energy between people. I think that safety is one of the feelings that we prioritize the least in our society and in our companies and stuff like that, we dont think about it, but when we feel safe we can be ourselves, and where well be ourselves we can be genuinely happy. I believe that if we feel safe thats when the inner child within us comes in, thats what we can play and just enjoy the moment.

Catena Media has been such a success in the gambling world, and its almost shocking that Bergman would have left it. I mean the very short story of Catena Media is that it started out of pure joy and pure happiness. Me and Ian, and my other co-founder, we just did this as a hobby project, and then suddenly it took off. We hired a lot of people, I had no idea what we were doing we had investors, we had lawyers, we had an IPO, and a lot of the passion I originally felt was replaced by demands and sacrifices and late nights and stress, and all of these things. And I just lost all the joy, and at some point, reached immense financial success.

After leaving Catena, Bergman went on to help fund school project in Africa, and that gave him a whole new perspective on life, as he discovered just how rough some people have it. He told a story about a school he helped funded, which had to have the unique rule that the children shot not be beaten. In the other school buildings, the kids got beaten up, and the kids had to be afraid, but here the kids got to be safe, as we touched upon, and they got to be happy, he said. And for me that was the first time I realized that, whoa, this is something that you can do with money, this is something that can change things, that really brings meaning.

That new perspective lead to what has become Great.com, and rather than focus on short term moves to build profit, he hopes for something much greater. Well, in very short, Great will be a casino affiliate, very similar to Catena and all the others out there, but with a big, big difference that this will be a lifelong project, he said. Im doing this for the next 50 years and for me its not important to make results this year, its important that we make the biggest possible bang for the buck over the next decades.

I believe that the single most important thing when it comes to reaching results is consistency over time, and being persistent chasing your results, he said. And this is very, very easy if youre having fun, and its very, very hard if youre not having fun. And I believe that most organizations, they strive towards not having fun and pushing themselves to the results, because thats usually the quickest way of getting there, while were prioritizing having fun and creative freedom and whatever it is otherwise that is important in life, because we believe thats how youll get the better results in the long run and the happiest team.

Bergman hopes that by leading by example, and making charity a top priority, he can help shift the corporate culture permanently. If I could accomplish one thing in my life, that would be to make charity cool, he said. And what I mean by that is that people spend $10,000 on a Rolex watch, to show their Rolex watch and be genuinely proud of their Rolex watch, but theyre not giving $10,000 to charity and talk about how they did that.

How has COVID-19 affected the UK iGaming industry? – AffiliateINSIDER

It goes without saying that the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) has had a significant impact on iGaming in the UK. A lack of sporting activity, combined with a lockdown lasting over 10 weeks and the need to pivot has been challenging for operators and affiliates alike.

With that being said, there is light at the end of the tunnel. The government has approved the return of competitive sports, even though things will look different for a while. On top of that, life is albeit at the pace of a turtle getting back to some form of normal.

So, in the fallout of everything, what was the extent of the virus impact on the countrys online gaming industry? Online casino affiliate Bojoko recently published a report looking at this. Here are their main findings.

Unsurprisingly, interest in sports betting has dropped over the past few months. Between February and April 2020, data acquired from Google Trends revealed a 41% drop in the volume of users searching for Best Sports Betting Sites. More specifically to this particular vertical, Sports Betting UK saw 33% less interest.

The beginning of April saw the Virtual Grand National aired on ITV, which raised over 2.5 million for the NHS. Google Trends volume index with 0 being the lowest and 100 being the highest showed that this event coincided with an increase in sports betting interest. The score for the term Sports Betting went up from 45 in March to 75 in April.

The above highlights positive signs for when sports in the UK fully resume, particularly for the Premier League and commencement of Royal Ascot later this month. Just because some players havent bet for three months doesnt mean that they wont return. So, in some ways, this was similar to people not betting on football during the off-season.

In the absence of major sporting events (unless you happen to be an avid follower of the Belarussian Premier League), you wont be too shocked to hear that online casino games have attracted more attention in the UK. Between February and April, search volume for Best Casino Sites jumped up by 78%. In addition to this, the term Casino Sites saw its search volume score rise from 30 in February to 43 in April.

These statistics are somewhat contrary to trends that have happened on mainland Europe. Findings from one unnamed operator with customers in Norway, Germany, Finland and Sweden discovered that while 85% of sports bettors played casino games prior to their respective countries lockdowns, only 77% did so afterwards. We dont know why this is the case, but can speculate. Some individuals might simply just play casino games while they bet on sports, while others could have been speculative about regulation such as Swedens proposed interim online casino limits.

A shutdown of many land-based gaming venues has, naturally, contributed to some of those customers moving online even if only temporarily. H2 Gambling Capital believes that by the end of this year, online will make up 16.5% of the total gambling market worldwide. Prior to the spread of COVID-19, this was projected to be 13%.

The gambling research firm also predicts total revenue across on and offline sources to be $399.6 billion. This is 15.6% lower than the pre-pandemic forecast.

Those that have successfully pivoted during the last three months or so will potentially have additional revenue sources, such as esports, which could be prosperous for years to come. However, its important to not completely disregard these just because sports are returning. With players that have warmed to these verticals, you might discover cross-selling opportunities.

The impact of social distancing might have an effect on player trends going forward. Since so many people have been kept apart from their friends, they may put a couple of quid on an accumulator at the weekend with them for the social aspect. Others may start placing bets because theyve missed being involved in the matchday experience. This is even more the case when fans still probably wont be allowed back into stadiums for a while. Either way, this poses an opportunity for operators and affiliates to attract a new, bigger audience.

COVID-19 has impacted all aspects of society in the UK and the iGaming industry is no different. Player behavioural changes over the past few months offer key indicators about how they might act in a post-lockdown world.

Some players may continue betting on alternative verticals, while returning to sports betting. Others, on the other hand, may just stick with sports betting.

The end-of-year projections for the gambling industry in general arent overly surprising. In the absence of land-based betting, we may find over the coming years that the events of H1 2020 just sped up the process of online gaming being adopted by more. We also shouldnt worry too much about the revised revenue drop, because there are enough signs to highlight that the industry will recover.

Ian Sims: Affiliates will have realised they need to diversify – Casino Beats

The global impacts of the current health crisis has had far reaching consequences across a multitude of global industries, with betting and gaming embracing working from home as well as the uptake of digital conferences.

One such virtual entity gets underway this month as CasinoBeats Malta Digital gets set to host 120 high-level speakers on the new event dates of June 30 to July 2.

Everyone knows that regulation and M&A have shaken up the space and I see the two real challenges being born out of those, Sims says of the aforementioned quandary.

If I was still an affiliate, Id be most bothered about finding ways to innovate and produce something original but Id also be worried about how other affiliates ignorance of compliant marketing might result in me losing revenue when an affiliate program is shut down, they cull affiliates, the operator leaves the UK market or closes the brand. Or worse, they lose their licence.

Theres little you can do to stop the latter except hope that the operators find the bad content before the regulators but you can mitigate the harm by spreading the risk. Its always been important to spread your players around or else there will come a time when you wake up to some bad news but it is more important than ever right now.

Data is one core asset but there are other ways to be innovative

As far as innovation goes, thats where the long term prosperity is. The days of boiler plate content, promoting bonuses and giving wonderful reviews about wonderful casinos with wonderful games and and a wonderful customer service are fading fast.

Looking around, Ive seen some great examples of new ideas: Slots Catalog was one I loved, the clever tote-inspired esports platform Puntt is another and sites like Blexrs Slots Comparer offer originality for players. Data is one core asset but there are other ways to be innovative if an affiliate is actually prepared to sit down and think about it. Being a gambler should help here: think like a player.

Before moving to to offer insight into what affiliates can do to ensure compliance and prosperity: Innovation I have covered above but compliance is a whole different ball game. In fact, you can combine the two quite nicely with a Trip Advisor approach to marketing. Everyone wants honest, balanced opinions but historically they have rarely got that from marketing folk.

One of the biggest issues is that many affiliates employ content writers to deliver content and while youd hope those writers would be gamblers but even if they are, that doesnt mean they understand vulnerable gamblers nor does it mean they are authoritative.

At Rightlander, we have regular approaches from affiliates looking for help with compliance and we are experimenting with a review service and providing education for teams of content writers. Its essential they know what they can and cant do and ultimately, you have to learn to survive before you can start thinking about prosperity.

the common-sense approach is to think about what you want to see or hear as a player

Recent moves undertaken by the affiliate compliance specialists has seen Rightlander launch a Social Responsibility Report for UK and Sweden facing operators as well as unveiling its support for Spanish igaming operators, in the shape of a new compliance tool.

As strategies begin to be implemented and executed for a post COVID era, Sims comments on how he foresees the landscape changing: Any affiliate that sells bonuses as a plus point to players needs to start thinking about the future. I dont think COVID-19 will change much when it comes to affiliate marketing itself but I think a few affiliates will have realised that they need to diversify.

Thats good though: diversity is needed and that breeds innovation as most areas of gambling are competitive already so its not just simply a question of launching a reviews site in a new vertical any-more. You need an angle. If it were me, Id be looking at authority as the angle but the common-sense approach is to think about what you want to see or hear as a player. And that isnt about how good a bonus is!

The thing I love most about the conferences is the inspiration that comes from networking and chatting face-to-face. A lot of things will be said that wouldnt necessarily be communicated in an email (for various reasons!) and when people are put on the spot, they can say things that provoke in both good and bad ways.

While online conferences might struggle to reproduce the social networking ambience of a restaurant or bar, they are able to bring fresh voices and ideas to the table. Its harder to make time when you have all the distractions of home and work still going on around you but a good panel line-up, webinar topic or interview is situation-irrelevant.

Concluding with key expectations from the event: I always enjoy sitting on panels and listening to my fellow panellists although the problem for me is that I tend to have something to say on everything and its not always something I should say so I always end up biting my lip! Thats more because I was a big player for a long time and I have a strong opinion on how operators treat players and how regulator guidelines should be.

It wasnt so much of a problem when I was an affiliate but now as a compliance service provider, I sometimes find myself caught between trying to help clients manage a new guideline while the player in me is thinking what a poorly thought out guideline it is.
