Recent advances in biotechnology are helping us prepare for and meet societys most pressing challenges.

At its simplest, biotechnology is technology based on biology - biotechnology harnesses cellular and biomolecular processes to develop technologies and products that help improve our lives and the health of our planet. We have used the biological processes of microorganisms for more than 6,000 years to make useful food products, such as bread and cheese, and to preserve dairy products.

Modern biotechnology provides breakthrough products and technologies to combat debilitating and rare diseases, reduce our environmental footprint, feed the hungry, use less and cleaner energy, and have safer, cleaner and more efficient industrial manufacturing processes.

Currently, there are more than 250 biotechnology health care products and vaccines available to patients, many for previously untreatable diseases. More than 18 million farmers around the world use agricultural biotechnology to increase yields, prevent damage from insects and pests and reduce farming's impact on the environment. And more than 50 biorefineries are being built across North America to test and refine technologies to produce biofuels and chemicals from renewable biomass, which can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Biotechnology – Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana

The biotechnology program at Ivy Tech is taught by instructors with real-world experience. Students will use state-of-the-art laboratories that are equipped with instrumentation, supplies and equipment for an effective hands-on laboratory experience.

Classes focus on teaching a variety of procedures necessary to execute laboratory projects assigned in the students chosen field. Students will spend a significant amount of class time working hands-on doing laboratory activities either by themselves or in small groups with the ability to have one-on-one time with the instructor.

The Biotechnology Program prepares students for careers in a variety of life science and manufacturing settings including research, quality control, pharmaceuticals, and medical devise manufacturing.

Graduates will have the foundation needed to transfer to earn a bachelors degree or move right in to local, high-paying jobs in the community, including with some of our industry partners like Dow Agroscience, Eli Lilly, Cook Pharmica, Midwest Compliance Laboratories, and more. These great partnerships lead to our graduates high job placement rate.

What is biotechnology? – Definition from WhatIs.com

Biotechnology is the use of biological processes, organisms, or systems to manufacture products intended to improve the quality of human life. The earliest biotechnologists were farmers who developed improved species of plants and animals by cross pollenization or cross breeding. In recent years, biotechnology has expanded in sophistication, scope, and applicability.

The science of biotechnology can be broken down into subdisciplines called red, white, green, and blue. Red biotechnology involves medical processes such as getting organisms to produce new drugs, or using stem cells to regenerate damaged human tissues and perhaps re-grow entire organs. White (also called gray) biotechnology involves industrial processes such as the production of new chemicals or the development of new fuels for vehicles. Green biotechnology applies to agriculture and involves such processes as the development of pest-resistant grains or the accelerated evolution of disease-resistant animals. Blue biotechnology, rarely mentioned, encompasses processes in marine and aquatic environments, such as controlling the proliferation of noxious water-borne organisms.

Biotechnology, like other advanced technologies, has the potential for misuse. Concern about this has led to efforts by some groups to enact legislation restricting or banning certain processes or programs, such as human cloning and embryonic stem-cell research. There is also concern that if biotechnological processes are used by groups with nefarious intent, the end result could be biological warfare.

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK For the better part of four decades, North Carolina has steadily committed resources to developing biotechnologies and a life science cluster via the North Carolina Biotechnology Center. Through the work of many researchers, entrepreneurs, service providers, state and federal policy makers, and partners, North Carolina has grown its life science cluster from a handful of companies to 735 today.

As we begin to bridge our fifth decade of work, this National Biotechnology Month is an opportunity to show pride in the 66,000 people who make their living in this clean industry.

From the minds of North Carolina researchers, important advances still improve our quality of life today. North Carolinas prize-winning science brought us a model to study a broad spectrum of disease, a method for improving crop yield, and a contrarian yet correct approach to treating Alzheimers.

Today, North Carolina companies produce a range of medicines, diagnostic tests, improved crops and bio-based fuel that influence our lives every day. And in the coming decade North Carolina will lead the way with both the science behind and production of potentially curative gene and cell therapies.

North Carolina has done this with a focus on raising up its population with world-class training programs, emulated across the U.S. and even internationally. With a combination of community college and university training, North Carolinians in both urban and rural areas are able to secure these high-paying jobs manufacturing important products in a clean environment. Nowhere is this better seen than in the BioPharma Crescent, a five-county area of rural eastern North Carolina. Through deliberate attention to infrastructure and training, this region has built a cluster of companies that employs 10,000 from a wide swath of rural North Carolina.

Biotechnology has made a similar positive impact on our states historic strength of agriculture. Cotton, soybeans and corn dominate the Coastal Plain, while underground North Carolina produces the worlds largest supply of sweet potatoes. A vast diversity of plants in western North Carolina provides the source for nutritional supplements. Our specialty crop farmers benefit from targeted research, and a consortium of researchers are uncovering new sources of animal feed with enhanced nutrition, grown right here in North Carolina.

In Kannapolis, researchers from a broad coalition of universities are matching nutrition, physical performance and longevity to extend the quality and length of lives.

The list of opportunities those realized and those yet to be goes on. From a trailer on the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill campus came the global contract research and testing industry. In Winston-Salem, a biotech campus rose from a cluster of tobacco facilities. And for retiring veterans and high school seniors alike, targeted programs are opening up new opportunities for pharmaceutical manufacturing jobs.

Biotechnology and the life sciences have a long and broad history in North Carolina. On behalf of the North Carolina life science community, the North Carolina Biotechnology Center looks forward to the coming decade, to catalyzing the solutions that will make life better for North Carolinians, Americans, and people around the globe. The work of the Biology and Biotechnology Department at WPI goes far beyond the theoretical. Students, faculty, and industry collaborate in research and discovery to solve problems that affect us all. Their goals: to help treat and cure common, dread diseases, like Alzheimers and cancer; heal wounds faster; create a greener world through science; and use computer science techniques to solve flesh-and-blood problems.

Its state-of-the-art new research center, the Life Sciences and Bioengineering Center at Gateway Park, is practically bursting at the seams with fundamental and applied research, conducted with cutting-edge instrumentation and tools. Biotechnology MS Degree – UCF Graduate Catalog 2016-2017

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Master of Science in Biotechnology program in the College of Medicine will prepare students to function in the industrial biotechnology environment. This program is designed to give students broad knowledge and training in the scientific and practical aspects of biotechnology.

The Master of Science in Biotechnology program in the College of Medicine will prepare students to function in the industrial biotechnology environment. This program is designed to give students broad knowledge and training in the scientific and practical aspects of biotechnology.

It involves innovative, hands-on and multidisciplinary learning approaches to educate and train students in scientific aspects of biotechnology. The courses and research training required of all students in this program are designed to develop independent thinking, team work and communication skills, which are highly desirable in the biotechnology industry. Students will be provided an industrial perspective and an understanding of product development at the same time as they are trained in the biotechnology techniques required for such development.

The Master of Science in Biotechnology program consists of a minimum of 30 semester credit hours of graduate courses offeredby the Burnett School of Biomedical Sciences inthe College of Medicine that includes 21 credit hours minimum of required courses, 3 credits of restricted electives,and 6 credit hours of thesis research as detailed below.

What makes this program unique is the focus on practical training offered to graduate students through masters thesis research in molecular biotechnology to perform jobs in laboratory environment that require scientific talent.

Students must take the following courses plus at least two credit hours of graduate seminar.

MCB 5722C Methods in Biotechnology (4 credit hours) or BSC 6407C Laboratory Methods in Molecular Biology (3 credit hours)

BSC 6432 Structure-Function-Relationships of Biomedical Sciences I (5 credit hours)

BSC 6433 Structure-Function-Relationships of Biomedical Sciences II (5 credit hours)

BSC 6431 Practice of Biomedical Sciences (3 credit hours)

PCB 5527 Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (3 credit hours) or one of the following: BSC 5418 Tissue Engineering (3 credit hours), MCB 6417C Microbial Metabolism (3 credit hours), PCB 5025 Molecular and Cellular Pharmacology (3 credit hours)

Students will participate in at least two graduate seminar courses thatwill prepare them for making professional presentations with emphasis in biotechnology. The courseswill involve participation of speakers from the biotechnology industry with emphasis on an industrial perspective on biotechnology applications and product development.

Students willselect three credit hours of restricted electives from the list below.

Students will take a minimum of six credits of thesis research (MCB 6971) to complete their research and submit their thesis specializing in biotechnology research. Students are expected to have an in-depth discussion with at least three faculty members before choosing alaboratory for thesis research.The student and the Thesis Adviser/Major Professor will jointly recommend an advisory committee comprised of at least three members. The committee composition must reflect expertise relevant to the students thesis research and must be approved by the Graduate Committee. Students switching to change the composition of the Thesis Advisory Committee must also obtain approval from the Graduate Committee.

The thesis proposal defense requirement should be met and passed successfully no later than the end of the summer of the first year in the program. Students will not be allowed to register for courses for the Fall semester of their second year until this requirement is fulfilled. The Thesis Proposal requirement includes: 1) a written 5-page thesis proposal; 2) a thesis proposal defense in front of the thesis committee; and 3) questions by the thesis committee to test the student's understanding of the basic concepts in the field and relevant applications. The student will be evaluated on performance in all three sections. Should the student fail, a second opportunity will be provided within 2 weeks of the first attempt. A second failure will result in dismissal from the program.

An oral thesis defense is required. The defense will be in the format of:

A 50-minute presentation of the thesis work, including a 5-minute introduction

A 10-minute free period for the general audience to ask questions

A 1-hour closed-door examination by the Thesis Advisory Committee and the program faculty present

The thesis should be of significant scope and depth such that the work has made advances in the area of biotechnology. The MS thesis research must generate sufficient quantity and quality data to support the submission of a minimum of one manuscript. Approval of the final thesis will require consent from the majority of the Program Faculty who choose to review the thesis, inclusive of the Thesis Advisory Committee. Faculty members with dissenting vote on the thesis must provide written justification. Scientific journal review criteria will be used as guidelines by the faculty to evaluate the final thesis for its appropriateness for publication in the target journal.

Students will be evaluated on the progress in thesis research by the thesis advisory committee for fall and spring. Two consecutive unsatisfactory evaluations will result in dismissal from the program.

Students must pass a comprehensive exam to qualify for the Master of Science degree.

Students must successfully pass an oral comprehensive examination to test the understanding of the basic concepts in the field and relevant applications. The Comprehensive Examination will be conducted during the thesis proposal defense.The exam will be administered by the thesis committee. Should the student fail this exam, a second opportunity will be provided within 2 weeks of the first attempt. A second failure will result in dismissal from theprogram.

In addition to thegeneral UCF graduateapplication requirements, applicants to this program must provide:

Personal interviews are helpful but not required. Applicants whodo not have a competitiveGPA or GRE may occasionally be accepted if there is other convincing evidence of potential for high achievement and success.

Applicants who hold a BS degree in unrelated fields are expected to have the equivalent of 16 semester hours of credit in the biotechnology/biological sciences including a course in general microbiology, biochemistry or molecular biology or cell biology, plus one year of organic chemistry, one year of physics, basic university mathematics and statistics, and laboratory skills equivalent to the minimum required of our own undergraduates. Minor deficiencies may be remedied after acceptance by enrollment at the first opportunity in an appropriate course.
