17. Agricultural Biotechnology Part IIIc. The Organic Food Debate NQ
The Organic Food industry is worth over $40 Billion dollars. Organic food is mostly characterized by using no synthetic fertilizers, no synthetic pesticides and no GMOs. But are organic foods any better for you? Is it safe? Is organic agriculture sustainable? Can it provide the amount of food required for the growing world population? Why does it cost more than conventionally grown foods? These are some of the questions posed in this section on the debate on organic food. From:Albert KauschViews:0 0ratingsTime:18:12More inScience Technology

18. Agricultural Biotechnology Part IV. The Ethics of Agriculture NQ
The world population is now 7 billion, and will become 9 billion during the coming generation. World population is growing faster than increases in food supplies and water and arable land are becoming limiting. Over 90% of the population increases will occur in the cities of developing countries. 40000 people die from starvation each day; 1000000 people die from vitamin A deficiency each year; Who will feed these people? The Northern hemisphere? or themselves? Can biotechnology be used to feed the world? Should biotechnology be used to feed the poor? These are just some of the questions regarding the implementation of global agricultural biotechnology. it has been said however, that "It is imperative that the impediments now obstructing innovations in these critical areas be examined, and those that cannot be justified must be removed".From:Albert KauschViews:0 0ratingsTime:01:10:08More inScience Technology

16. Agricultural BIotechnology Part IIIb. Issues, Controversies and Concerns NQ
When the public thinks about GMOs in Food many controversies arise. Many of these are the result of a lack of knowledge about the technology and agriculture in general. Hopefully, given the previous parts on this topic the debate is now reasonably informed. In these part we consider the basis of some of the issues and controversies, which have merit, which are myth, and which need further consideration. These include: bull; Uncertainty about safety bull; Regulatory issues bull; Right of choice bull; Environmental concerns bull; Globalization bull; Big science, big companies bull; Distrust of Science bull; Food culture bull; "Crossing the line" Note to the student: We know this is a BIG section of this course and no textbook assignments, but with these extra lectures to view online....pay attention, we hope you have a lot to gain here!!! Agriculture is a big topic here because many of the applications are already in the market place. Food is something we are all involved with daily. Food is a sensitive topic and every culture has their own food. Many of the applications in agriculture will have parallels in the other applications of biotechnology which we consider in later parts of this course. Please contact us on your questions and comments, and about concerns which we did not address in this part of the series. From:Albert KauschViews:0 0ratingsTime:01:22:10More inScience Technology

GMOs are banned in Europe; Why? GMOs are not allowed in Organic Food: Why? are they safe/ What about the environment? These are only some of the questions raised by their application. we have already examined how GMOs are made, but this part provides a background to some of the issues, controversies and concerns we develo further in part IIIb.From:Albert KauschViews:0 0ratingsTime:47:51More inScience Technology

Encoded in the DNA sequence of our individual genome is the genetic program to build, maintain, and adapt all our tissues and their functions. Each human genome contains 200000 coding elements (exons) and millions of regulatory elements defining complex signaling and regulatory networks. Pharmacogenomics is the study of how an individual #39;s genetic inheritance affects the body #39;s response to drugs. Personalized Medicine offers treatments and diagnostics for the future based on a patients #39; DNA sequence. Sequencing and analysis of the human genome #39;s six billion base pairs is now rapid and affordable. studies on drug metabolism can now be based on individual genomicsFrom:Albert KauschViews:0 0ratingsTime:01:11:11More inScience Technology

Nearly everyone knows someone touched by cancer and often these are family members. Cancer is not really just one disease, but a number of them with various underlying causes with a complex biology. Cancer is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in the body. Cancerous cells are also called malignant cells. Cancer grows out of normal cells in the body, usually originating from a single cell. What is the basic biology and origin of cancer? In this section, we attempt to describe the biology of cancer, giving the basics for understanding these diseases in Cancer Basics and Socio-Economic Burdens. From:Albert KauschViews:0 0ratingsTime:01:26:38More inScience Technology

Students exposed to wonders of biotechnology

Posted on November 3, 2012, Saturday

KOTA KINABALU: Two hundred students of SMK Kota Marudu and 250 SMK Tun Fuad Stephens in Kiulu were exposed to the wonders of biotechnology and basic research techniques during the MyBio@School Programme organised by the Institute of Agro-Biotechnology Malaysia (ABI).

The programme, using interactive approaches and a science exploration competition, aims at cultivating the students deep interest in biotechnology science by familiarising them with basic research techniques in plant, animal and food biotechnology research.

MyBio@School programme is an on-going outreach and educational programme by ABI, an agency of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI). It was also recently held in secondary schools in Puchong, Selangor.

The SMK Kota Marudu students are the second in Sabah after SMK Tun Fuad Stephens to undergo the programme which also aims at raising their awareness on the importance of innovation and creativity in their daily lives.

The programme garnered encouraging response from the students and teachers as well.

The teachers of both schools have expressed happiness on the outcome of the programme.

Senior teacher Yazid Mahadi of SMK Kota Marudu believed it is able to bring out students potential in the field of science and technology while

senior teacher Kartini Kinsai of SMK Tun Fuad Stephens said the programme had attracted students interest in the field and hoped it would be continued in schools.

MOSTI special officer Rakam Sijim attended the programme and presented prizes to the students.
