Biochemistry | Allegheny College – Meadville, PA

With our entrance into the 21st century, it is increasingly apparent that distinctions between the sciences are becoming blurred. To prepare students for this environmentand others that theyll encounter in the not-so-distant futureAllegheny offers an interdisciplinary and integrated major in the field of biochemistry, increasing the diversity of Alleghenys hands-on educational opportunities and encouraging students to see the connections between scientific disciplines.

The biochemistry major is part of an interdisciplinary program primarily supported by faculty from the biology and chemistry departments. The major requires a group of courses from the biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics departments.

The junior seminar offers students the chance to specialize within the major, applying their knowledge from the introductory and upper-level courses to a specific sub-discipline. In addition, the in-depth exposure to scientific literature and assignments emphasizing scientific communication form an important bridge to the senior project. The required senior project is a two-semester, laboratory-based, independent project that is ultimately defended before an interdisciplinary faculty committee.

Biochemistry – WVU School of Medicine

Vazhaikkurichi M. Rajendran, PhD, was recently inducted as a Fellow by the American Gastroenterological Association.

Dr. Rajendran is currently a Professor in Biochemistry, where he performs research investigating electrolyte transport processes that regulate colonic fluid movement during physiological and pathophysiological (diarrhea and ulcerative colitis) conditions.

Dr. Michael Schaller, Chair of Biochemisty, sheds some light on the relevance and signifigance of his ongong research here at WVU. "Raj has a longstanding interest in the control of sodium absorption and potassium secretion in the colon, which drives the passive movement of water. His studies have provided insight into the normal physiology of the colon, and importantly, into mechanisms leading to diseases like colitis and inflammatory bowel disease".

The American Gastroenterological Association (AGA), the nations oldest medical society, is dedicated to disorders of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Through the fellowship program, the AGA honors superior professional achievement in clinical private or academic practice and in basic or clinical research. Fellowships are awarded to AGA members whose accomplishments and contributions demonstrate personal commitment to the field of gastroenterology.

The mission of the AGA is to promote the science and practice of gastroenterology through the support of research, education, advocacy and practice.

This is a one-semester online Biochemistry course designed for individuals who need first semester Biochemistry as a prerequisite to apply for admission to a program in the health professions.

Graduate programs that may require a CHEM 1005 Medical Biochemistry class include:

Medical Biochemistry is a four credit hour course designed to lay the foundation for other basic and clinical medical sciences. The goal of this course is to learn the core concepts of biochemistry that apply to human health and disease and to cite specific examples of their application. You will be able to analyze and evaluate the most common biochemistry cited in medical literature. Furthermore, these basics will facilitate further learning in biochemistry and the health sciences.Click here for the online Biochemistry course syllabus.More detailed readings are available on Blackboard.

The typical student will complete this online Biochemistry course in approximately 16 weeks. Many students are nontraditional students who have elected an online course for flexibility. Since the course is self-paced, you may complete the course in fewerthan 16 weeks.

One semester of college level biology, and one year of chemistry that includes one semester of organic chemistry.All prerequisite courses must have been completed successfully within the past seven years.
