MONMOUTH BEACH, N.J. (CBSNewYork) Work has begun to replenish some of the Jersey Shore beaches that were hard-hit by Superstorm Sandy.
As WCBS 880s Jim Smith reported, the more than $8 million project to restore the coastline in Monmouth Beach was approved weeks before Sandy even developed, as part of a six- to eight-year maintenance cycle.

U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone (D-N.J.) said the timing could not have been any better.
Many of those beaches really were heavily damaged Hurricane Sandy, Pallone said.
He said the pre-planned effort takes on new meaning in the wake of Superstorm Sandy.
Theyre still vulnerable, Pallone said. If there was another storm, the damage would be a lot worse.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers already had shovels in the ground as of this weekend. Pallone said they have been piling on sand for a critical boost in height.
When the beaches dont have the elevation, they dont provide the protection that they would normally, he said.

Canterbury beaches are expected to be in "pretty good" shape this summer, Environment Canterbury (ECan) says.
The regional council has begun water quality monitoring at 51 river and lake sites and 45 popular coastal swimming spots from Kaikoura to the Waitaki catchment.
The test results will be put on the ECan website weekly until mid-March.
ECan water quality scientist Michele Stevenson said Canterbury's popular beaches, such as Taylors Mistake and Gore Bay, were "looking pretty good" for summer.
However, she said river spots, such as the Ashburton River, were still problematic.
The coastal and freshwater sites were graded from "very good" - considered satisfactory for swimming - to "very poor", which should be avoided, with possible "direct discharges of faecal material" in the water.
The freshwater sites were tested for E.coli, while the marine sites were tested for enterococci. Both indicated whether pathogens or harmful micro-organisms, such as bacteria, protozoa and viruses, were present.
If a site had a high reading, it would be tested again that week, Stevenson said.
ECan also checked for algal blooms as they could be dangerous to health.

Cleanup teams have been scouring Coromandel beaches to make sure they are free of Rena wreck debris in time for the summer holiday season.
Teams from the Braemar Howells container recovery company inspected the northern beaches this week on foot and quad bikes looking for plastic beads and minor flotsam, operations manager Mike Richards said.
"Braemar is very conscious we're now rapidly heading towards the peak summer holiday season and we want to make sure that beaches, coves and other shoreline areas are as clear as possible."
He said shoreline teams at Sailor's Grave, Tairua and Waihi Beach had picked up large quantities of plastic beads. The Rena was carrying around 17 tonnes of the tiny beads when it crashed into the Astrolabe Reef off Mt Maunganui more than a year ago.
Mr Richards said he was pleased with reports that the stretch of coast between Main Beach at Mt Maunganui and Papamoa was in a good condition for the arrival of holidaymakers.
The number of containers recovered from the wreck remains at 1007 of the 1368 on board.

Essentially a photo-sharing application, CoastBusters allows people walking along beaches to upload photos of debris to an international database. Participants can also add a description of what they #39;ve found. The information will help planners coordinate cleanup efforts and address issues such as invasive species. With an estimated one million tons of debris still in the water, people who organize beach cleanups are thrilled with the new technology. CoastBusters is free and available now.
