The weather bureau is warning of dangerous surf on exposed beaches across south-east Queensland over the next few days.
Forecaster Sam Campbell says conditions will be rough on exposed beaches between Fraser Island and Coolangatta for the next few days.
Mr Campbell says the powerful surf is being whipped up by ex-tropical cyclone Evan which battered Fiji earlier this week.
He says conditions will be rough and swimmers need to take extra care over the weekend.
"We're expecting powerful surf to develop about the south-east coast," he said.
"That's in the waters south of Fraser Island, so we're going to see an easterly swell at 1.5 to two metres.
"It is quite a long period swell, so that means the waves have more energy than they normally do.
"When they come in and break on the shore, they will have a fair bit of energy and conditions could be a bit rough on the actual beaches, particularly exposed beaches."
Gold Coast chief lifeguard Warren Young says there could be a swell of up to two metres today and tomorrow.
He is urging swimmers, particularly those with children, to speak to authorities before entering the water.
