The Bahamas, archipelago and country on the northwestern edge of the West Indies. Formerly a British colony, The Bahamas became an independent country within the Commonwealth in 1973.

The name Bahamas is of Lucayan Taino (Arawakan) derivation, although some historians believe it is from the Spanish bajamar, meaning shallow water. The islands occupy a position commanding the gateway to the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean Sea, and the entire Central American region. Their strategic location has given the history of The Bahamas a unique and often striking character. It was there that Christopher Columbus made his original landfall in the Americas. The subsequent fate of the peaceful original inhabitants remains one of the more tragic episodes in the development of the entire region, while the early attempts at European-dominated settlement were marked by intense national rivalries, interspersed with long periods of lawlessness and piracy. As a result, the society and culture that has evolved in The Bahamas is a distinctive blend of European and African heritages, the latter a legacy of the slave trade and the introduction of the plantation system using African slaves. The islands, lacking natural resources other than their agreeable climate and picturesque beaches, have become heavily dependent on the income generated by the extensive tourist facilities and the financial sector that have been developed, often as a result of the injection of foreign capital. The continued popularity of the islands with tourists, largely from North America, has helped to maintain a relatively high standard of living among the population, most of whom are of African descent. The capital, Nassau, is located on small but important New Providence Island.

Lying to the north of Cuba and Hispaniola, the archipelago comprises nearly 700 islands and cays, only about 30 of which are inhabited, and more than 2,000 low, barren rock formations. It stretches more than 500 miles (800 km) southeast-northwest between Grand Bahama Island, which has an area of 530 square miles (1,373 square km) and lies about 60 miles (100 km) off the southeastern coast of the U.S. state of Florida, and Great Inagua Island, some 50 miles (80 km) from the eastern tip of Cuba. The islands other than New Providence are known collectively as the Out (Family) Islands. They include Grand Bahama, which contains the major settlements of Freeport and West End; Andros (2,300 square miles [6,000 square km]), the largest island of The Bahamas; Abaco, or Great Abaco, (372 square miles [963 square km]); and Eleuthera (187 square miles [484 square km]), the site of one of the early attempts at colonization.

The Bahamas occupies an irregular submarine tableland that rises out of the depths of the Atlantic Ocean and is separated from nearby lands to the south and west by deepwater channels. Extensive areas of flatland, generally a few feet in elevation, are the dominant topographic features of the major islands; the Bimini group (9 square miles [23 square km]), for example, has a maximum elevation of only 20 feet (6 metres). A number of islands fronting the Atlantic have a range or series of ranges of hills on the northeastern side that parallel the longer axes of the islands. These ranges are formed of sand washed ashore and blown inland by the trade winds. The newer hills adjacent to the seashore are normally sand dunes. Solidity increases toward the interior, where the particles become cemented to form Bahama limestone. Eleuthera and Long Island (230 square miles [596 square km]) have the greatest number of hills exceeding 100 feet (30 metres). The highest point in The Bahamas, Mount Alvernia, at 206 feet (63 metres), is on Cat Island (150 square miles [388 square km]). Beneath the soil, the islands are composed of limestone rock and skeletal remains of coral fossils and other marine organisms. There are no rivers, but several islandsparticularly New Providence, San Salvador (63 square miles [163 square km]), and Great Inaguahave large lakes. There is abundant fresh water on Andros Island.

The Bahamas are an archipelago of about 700 islands and 2,400 uninhabited islets and cays lying 50 mi off the east coast of Florida. They extend for about 760 mi (1,223 km). The Arawak Indians were the first inhabitants of the Bahamas. Columbus's first encounter with the New World was on Oct. 12, 1492, when he landed on the Bahamian island of San Salvador. The British first built settlements on the islands in the 17th century. In the early 18th century, the Bahamas were a favorite pirate haunt.

The Bahamas were a Crown colony from 1717 until they were granted internal self-government in 1964. The islands moved toward greater autonomy in 1968 after the overwhelming victory in general elections of the Progressive Liberal Party, led by Prime Minister Lynden O. Pindling, over the predominantly white United Bahamians Party. With its new mandate from the black population (85% of Bahamians), Pindling's government negotiated a new constitution with Britain under which the colony became the Commonwealth of the Bahama Islands in 1969. On July 10, 1973, the Bahamas became an independent nation.

Once heavily reliant on agriculture and fishing, the Bahamas has diversified its economy into tourism, financial services, and international shipping. While the nation enjoys a per capita income that is among the top 30 in the world, there is a big gap between the urban middle class and poor farmers. In addition, the nation is vulnerable to hurricanes, which regularly inflict serious damage.

Hubert Ingraham became prime minister in May 2007 after his Free National Movement, an opposition party, won parliamentary elections. As of 2012, the Bahamas remains one of the wealthiest countries (GDP per capita) in the Americas, after Bermuda, the U.S., the Cayman Islands, Canada, and the Virgin Islands.

On May 7, 2012, parliamentary elections were held. The Progressive Liberal Party took 29 of the 38 seats. Progressive Liberal Party member Perry Christie was sworn in as prime minister and finance minister. Christie served one prior term as prime minister from 2002 to 2007.

Archeologists believe that Taino people from Cuba and the island of Hispaniola migrated into the southern reaches of the Bahamas in the 11th century.

Those first settlers, known as Lucayans, lived across some scattered islands in the Bahamas when Christopher Columbus arrived in 1492.

There are a few other claims, as well as unsubstantiated opinions, but it is now widely accepted that Christopher Columbus's first landfall in this 'New World' was on the Bahamian island of San Salvador.

Like most other isolated islands, when the indigenous population had not been exposed to the outside world, diseases carried in by European explorers and their crew (unintentionally) decimated the local population; the same was true here for the Taino Indians.

Over the next century, or so, the Taino population was further decimated, as the islands became a major launching base for the Spanish conquest of the Caribbean, and they took the Taino with them as slaves.

Assorted factions from Europe (mainly from England) attempted to settle these islands in the early 17th century. In 1648, English Puritans established the first permanent European settlement on an island they named Eleuthera.

In 1670, England's King Charles II literally rented the islands for trading purposes to a group of English nobles that were at the time governing British colonies in North America, such as Maryland, Carolina, and New Jersey.

Over the next half century, these low-lying islands, with many places to hide, became a haven for pirates and lawlessness.

To curb those problems, Britain transformed the Bahamas into a crown colony in 1718, one first governed by Woodes Rogers, an English sea captain and privateer.

During the American War of Independence, the British-controlled Bahamas were a frequent target of American naval forces; in fact, American forces once briefly occupied the capital city of Nassau.

After the new country of America gained its independence in the late 1770s, thousands of disgruntled British loyalists (complete with their slaves) moved to the Bahamas.

Across their remaining colonies, mainly because of pressures applied on the home-front, the British abolished the slave trade in 1807. Soon liberated African slavesdominated the population of the Bahamas.

Through the mid 20th century the British remained in control. Then in 1964, the islands were granted some levels of internal self-governing. Full independence came July 10, 1973.

Since that day the Bahamas have moved forward into prosperity. Today tourism is the major industry, and these stunning islands of gregarious people, beautiful scenery and sunny skies are one of the most popular cruise ship and vacation destinations on the planet. Bahamas which celebrates its national day on July 10th, has a population of 316,182 and gained its independence 1973.

Keano Roberts remembers as a youth watching NFL games on Sundays with his father, Antonio. They found the game to be fascinating, as many fathers and sons do.

But most of those who love watching American football live in the United States. The Roberts clan discovered the game while living in the Bahamas.

Keano is now a 6-foot-5 1/2, 280-pound sophomore at Chattanooga Christian and is playing on a football team for the first time. He and his Chargers teammates play Howard tonight in what will be Keano's first home game.

Urged on by his family which includes his mother, Nicara, and younger sister, Breanna Keano came to the United States for education opportunities. In addition to CCS, he applied to schools in Arizona and North Carolina.

CCS accepted him through its "homestay" program for international students, which worked out well for Keano because he has a cousin nearby attending Southern Adventist University in Collegedale. It also worked out because CCS began a football program in 2009.

"I've always watched football on TV," said Keano, who is in his second year at CCS but in his first on the football team. "Actually, when I came here I started getting into it. I watched it a lot more closely, just being a student of the game."

Keano played basketball in his native Nassau, and he also dabbled some with throwing the shot put and discus. He played basketball as a freshman on the Chargers' junior varsity, but that was about 40 pounds ago.

Starting with spring practice, he has been a football player. Coach Mark Mariakis has looked at him on both sides of the line and said the offensive side seems to be more his comfort zone.

Keano got a little playing time late in last week's loss at McCallie. However, there are concepts about the game he still must grasp before he can progress to the point of pushing for a starting position.

"It's tough for that big body to stay low," Mariakis said. "You have to understand leverage and how to get into people's hips. But from where he was in May, when he touched a football helmet for the first time, he's come a long way."

All the CCS football players were put through a gut check over the summer when the coaches had some qualified instructors come in and put them through some rigorous Navy SEAL-type testing. That was something Keano said he is proud to have made it through.

"Nobody quit," Keano said. "That was the good thing about it."

He also spent part of his summer back home in Nassau, where his father is dealing with a kidney ailment. He's in need of a transplant and is currently on dialysis and must be tested to see if he can be a transplant recipient.

Keano, who had a 3.37 grade point average in his first year at CCS, said the situation has made him even more focused on academics so he can begin pursuing a professional career. He tries to remain upbeat under the difficult circumstance.

"He's a fun kid," Mariakis said. "He smiles all the time. And with his accent, it's hard to get mad at him."

Keano said he plans to play basketball again at CCS this winter, but he thinks there may soon come a time when he has to choose between that and football. He said being part of a football team, even for this short amount of time, already has taught him more about himself than anything else he was tried.

"This is one of the most encouraging teams I've ever been a part of," Keano said. "They encourage me and have made me better each and every day."

And given his frame, Keano may find that football could eventually lead to the educational opportunity he seeks.

"With three years in the weight room, the kid could be a monster," Mariakis said. "One of the most exciting things we get to see as coaches in this game is when a young kid develops. I know one thing: He's not going to be limited by his stature."

The odds dropped Tuesday that a storm near the Bahamaswill strengthen severely as forecasters continue to see its potential track moving away from a South Carolina landfall.

The storm could skirt the state's coast by the weekend as a weak tropical storm, bringing rain and some gusts, officials said.

National Hurricane Center specialist Eric Blake gave a 30 percent chance the storm would turn into a tropical system. The center's forecast track would move it north off Florida.

"Regardless of development, very heavy rain and flooding is possible over portions of the Florida peninsula during the next few days," Blake said.

In the warm Gulf Stream waters off Florida, cyclones historically have churned up quickly from slow drifting storms to threaten the South Carolina coast. But weather moving across the country is expected to push this storm out to sea.

Weather Underground meteorologist Jeff Masters said the storm on Tuesday wasn't producing a lot of thunderstorms a signature of an emerging tropical system. He concurred it was more likely turn into a cyclone, if it does at all, as it moves away from Florida and the Southeast coast over the weekend.

A rain storm lurking off the Bahamas could become a tropical cyclone this week with the potential to land along the Southeast coast.

The National Hurricane Center gave the storm a 40 percent chance of turning into at least a tropical depression a weak tropical storm, within five days as it drifts across the Bahamian islands toward Florida.

The Hurricane Center put its potential track anywhere from the Florida Straits below Miami, to out to sea off Bermuda.

In the warm Gulf Stream waters, cyclones historically have churned up quickly from slow drifting storms to threaten the South Carolina coast.

Weather patterns that would steer the storm have become tricky to read. If the storm begins to drift up the Florida coast, it could bring at least heavy rain and maybe gusty winds to South Carolina in the days ahead, said meteorologist Shea Gibson, of WeatherFlow, a Charleston-based company.

However, weather moving across the country should push it out to sea Thursday or Friday, said Gibson and meteorologist Bob Henson, of Weather Underground.

The storm is the second of three in the ocean Monday. Ahead of it, the remnants of Tropical Storm Harvey were approaching the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico with a good chance of re-emerging as a tropical storm. Behind it, a third storm was forecast to stay out to sea.
