COS Systems Ready to Automate Open Access Networks as a Nokia Connected Partner – Broadband Communities

UMEA, SWEDEN COS Systems is specializing in software to operate broadband networks open for multiple providers delivering services on a shared infrastructure. Nokia is a global leader in fixed and wireless networks and networking technologies for open network architectures, software defined networking and network slicing. After recent integration work the cooperation between the companies is now formalized as COS Systems becomes a Nokia Fixed Networks OSS Connected Partner.

With new types of services emerging, such as telehealth, internet of things and smart services, it is becoming increasingly important to have a network open for multiple providers. Instead of building a proprietary network and trying to produce all the services current and future customers will need, it is attractive to provide a robust infrastructure and then open it up to multiple specialized providers on a wholesale basis.

In 2014 when we established COS Systems in the United States, Open Access was almost unheard of, but in just a few years this has changed dramatically. Especially municipalities are realizing that their best choice is not to become a provider of telecommunications services, but to ensure that this critical infrastructure is in place, just as with other utilities such as roads, water and electricity, says Bjorn Wannman, sales manager at COS Systems.

True Open Access Networks

With COS Systems heritage from Sweden, where their BSS/OSS platform COS Business Engine is used to operate more than a hundred municipal and utility fiber networks, this is not something new. For over a decade COS has enabled True Open Access Networks, where subscribers can access an online marketplace and choose freely between any type of services provided by many competing service providers. The competitive nature of the marketplace brings service innovation, increased quality, and lower prices. This is also where the partnership with Nokia comes into play. For a network deployed using Nokia Fixed Access equipment COS will be able to fully automate the subscribers interaction with the marketplace. As subscribers are managing their services on the marketplace, COS Business Engine will instruct Nokias management and control platform to instantly perform desired changes in the network.

With the tools to simplify business and network operations, COS Systems is able to uniquely meet operator needs for network automation. With this cooperation, operators - regardless of whether they are new or existing players in the market - can easily automate the delivery of high-speed broadband services to their residential and enterprise customers, says Bassam El-Zakhem, vice president, Fixed Networks Americas at Nokia.

Nokias OSS Connected Partner Program

Were excited to be part of Nokias OSS Connected Partner Program. They share our visions about open networks and what we see today is just the beginnings of what will come. Working together with a global leader such as Nokia on current and emerging Software Defined Networking and network slicing technology is thrilling. Network owners and operators working with us will know they are choosing an open and future proof solution, says Isak Finer, CMO and VP North America at COS Systems.

COS Systems has unique understanding and experience in the open type of networks that are becoming increasingly important. By combining the Nokia AMS and Altiplano management and control platforms with the COS Business Engine, operators can more effectively keep up with rapidly changing customer demands. Were happy to welcome COS Systems as OSS Connected Partners, says Bassam El-Zakhem, vice president, Fixed Networks Americas at Nokia.

Opinion: Does automation have a role to play in the next normal? – The PIE News

The coronavirus pandemic has had many unexpected impacts on higher education, which until recently has been renowned as a reluctant party to operational change. This has all been upturned as universities have been forced by lockdown onto a path of rapid digital transformation.

While many academics and support staff have become used to the basics of Zoom calls and other aspects of remote working online teaching, assessment and more intricate technologies are proving to be occasionally disruptive, and potentially harder to overcome in the long-term.

Improving the productivity and effectiveness of under-pressure student recruitment teams is vital

This comes in addition to threats including increased budgetary pressures, a decline in postgraduate demand, Brexit and US political instability.

In this climate the luxury of employing additional staff is unlikely, leaving leaders with a need to do more with less as they manage widely-distributed workforces.

Looking to the future, one of the most important opportunities emerging to counter this doom comes courtesy of the UKs entrepreneurial tech sector.

Improving the productivity and effectiveness of under-pressure student recruitment teams is a vital move for any HEI looking to stand out from the crowd, and the most effective way to achieve this can be summarised by one word automation.

On average there are more than 30 tasks and communication points for international recruitment staff interacting with prospective students. These time-consuming actions add to already heavy workloads.

Fortunately, there are now readily-available solutions to augment teams with technology that automates the most menial high-volume and repetitive tasks in the recruitment process, allowing for better management of workflows and, as a result, more students.

Our experience working with universities has found that 80% of the staff time normally dedicated to repetitive communication can be reduced to a mere 31%, a massive saving in cost and energy that enables front-line employees to focus on the quality conversations prospective students are demanding.

Even before Covid-19, many universities were struggling with fluctuating international enrolments due to unpredictable conditions, such as the cancellation and then reimplementation of the post-study work visa, changes to immigration legislation and increasing competition at home and abroad.

Delays and blockages in applications frustrate students and recruitment staff alike. However, efficient and automated technology can ease applications and, post-acceptance, help students navigate CAS requirements and immigration procedures.

Enroly builds solutions for exactly this kind of problem, including an automated applicant conversion compliance platform that takes care of CAS and visa administration tasks like document collection and student screening, which otherwise takes up valuable staff resources.

80% of the staff time normally dedicated to repetitive communication can be reduced to a mere 31%

The trend towards student recruitment automation is perhaps best summarised by one of our HE clients, James Morris, Immigration Compliance officer at the University of South Wales, who explains:

In the current climate of UK Visas and Immigration scrutiny, the ability to make informed decisions about which applicants to sponsor is more important than ever.

In terms of verifying that a student is in a position to apply for a visa Enrolys CAS Shield automates a level of individual attention for each applicant that would be difficult to achieve using staff to undertake checks manually.

The ability to upload clearly labelled and defined documents, accompanied by verification of their suitability, enables us to make quick judgments as to who is ready to receive a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies and who will require more support to apply for their visa, helping to mitigate unnecessary refusals or delays for applicants.

Jeffrey Williams is CEO and co-founder of Enroly, a venture-backed technology company providing enrolment automation software for higher education, winner of the Edtech Breakthrough Award for Enrolment Management Solution of the Year, 2020, and nominated finalist for the forthcoming 2020 PIEoneer Awards for Digital Innovation of the Year.

Todos Medical Expands Extraction Reagent and ANDiS 350 Extraction Automation Capacity to Support COVID-19 Testing in the USA – GlobeNewswire

REHOVOT, Israel, NEW YORK, NYand Shanghai, China, July 10, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- via NEWMEDIAWIRE --Todos Medical Ltd. (OTCQB: TOMDF), anin vitrodiagnostics company focused on the distribution of a comprehensive suite of solutions for the screening and diagnosis of COVID-19 and the development of blood tests for the early detection of cancer and Alzheimers disease, today announced that it has expanded its agreement with 3D Medicines Corporation for COVID-19 testing products.

Under the terms of the newly signed Medical Device Contract Manufacturing Agreement, Todos has been granted the exclusive right to seek out US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for 3D Meds SARS-CoV-19 and, as well as exclusive branding and distribution rights to 3D Meds qPCR test kits in the United States. 3D Med recently completed an expansion of its extraction reagent manufacturing capacity, by adding 1,000,000 extraction reagent production per week (~140,000 per day) that can be used towards deployment in the US.

The current daily testing volume in the United States is approximately 550,000 tests/day. The full deployment of 3D Meds additional extraction capacity would allow for an increase of approximately 25% in total US testing capacity per day. Todos has completed validation of 3D Meds qPCR kits and pre-loaded extraction reagents and automated machines at its partner CLIA/CAP certified lab Provista Diagnostics, Inc. in Alpharetta, GA.

Additionally, 3D Med has successfully validated pool testing at a ratio of 10:1, and Todos intends to complete pool testing validation here in the United States in the next several weeks so that it can seek US FDA EUA over the summer of 2020 and be ready to deploy pool testing broadly for Back to School and Return to Work testing, which Todos expects to ramp up significantly in the second half of Q3/2020. Pool testing of 10:1 would potentially increase capacity to a maximum of 1,400,000 tests per day.

It is now unequivocally clear that PCR testing is the gold standard in the United States for the foreseeable future, until new molecular technologies are able to reach the scale of current PCR testing, said Gerald Commissiong, President & CEO of Todos Medical. We are very pleased with the relationship we are building with 3D Med, especially as we see demand for extraction machines and reagents begin to really take off as smaller, independent labs begin to get involved in COVID-19 testing and they identify access to a stable supply of extraction reagents as the rate limiting step to market entry. We have started to ramp up sales, including a recent marquee sale of our ANDiS machines to the Cleveland Clinic, and we are now helping our clients get up and running so they can quickly expand their testing capacity. As we move into the next phase of growth for our emerging COVID-19 testing business, we are upselling our growing install base with Gnomegen qPCR kits and related materials so that Todos can compete effectively with competitors who tend to be focused on national and regional labs in the US. Our small and medium sized lab customer base greatly appreciates the availability of our extraction equipment and reagents.

Separately, Todos expanded its international distribution rights to 3D Meds COVID-19 testing products to include the United States, Israel, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Myanmar, Vietnam, Philippine, Cambodia/Laos, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, India, United Kingdom, France, Sweden, Italy, Germany, Romania, Austria, Monaco, Switzerland, the Balkans, India, Gulf States, Dubai, UAE, Argentina, Aruba, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bolivia (Plurinational State of), Mexico, Canada, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Martinique, Grenada, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Uruguay, Venezuela (Bolivarian Republic of), Dominican Republic of Congo, Madagascar, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Botswana, Angola, Zambia and South Africa.

Managing Digital Transformation from Automated to Autonomous Operations – ARC Viewpoints

Overview

A session at the 2020 ARC Industry Forum in Orlando, Florida focused on the complexity of aligning existing operational technology with new application roll-out plans. Several speakers acknowledged that, regardless of the challenges, the plans must still be carried out due to the potential business value they can deliver. However, we also learned that successful digital transformation requires flawless execution.

Due in part to the COVID-19 pandemic, industry has entered a period that urgently requires new modes of operation. Thanks to advances in digitalization, the ongoing convergence of OT and IT, and the overall digital transformation of industry; the process industries now have an opportunity to move from automated to autonomous operations where appropriate. Not only do these advances present the opportunity to improve overall business value, they present an opportunity to further advance safe and flawless operations.

For the last half century, industry has been moving toward higher levels of automation. Nevertheless, with each innovation, it has been important to consider the human factor. While, today, it may be possible to run certain processes autonomously or with minimal human interaction, transitioning from current operations will require the right technology as well as the right approach. ARCs Autonomous Operations Maturity Model summarizes the basic requirements.

It is important to keep in mind that the goal of moving from automation to autonomous operation is to improve the reliability and predictability of the operating plant. Today, human operators decide what to do when something unpredictable happens. Tomorrow, the autonomous systems may be making those decisions, with the humans serving as observers and overseers.

One concern often expressed today is the aging workforce and how to pass on the knowledge gained over the years of making decisions. This is often based on intuition and experience. While these human characteristics can be hard to replicate in systems, when trained with appropriate historical data and combined with adequate real-time data, artificial intelligence (AI)- based applications, can enhance the humans understanding of what is normal and abnormal in the plant operations.

Apostolos Georgiou, Program Leader and Sr. Engineering Advisor at ExxonMobil, talked about trends he is seeing with regard to the movement from automated to autonomous operations. Mr. Georgiou referenced the four stages of the Industrial Revolution beginning with stage 1 in the late 1700s to the current evolving stage 4. He characterized stage 3 as Computer and Automation beginning in 1970, which led to the beginning of the Digital Transformation that began roughly in the 1980s. Mr. Georgiou commented that stage 4 is largely about artificial intelligence. Ultimately, Industry 4.0-based Cyber Physical Systems will be enabled by exponential growth of Industrial Internet of Things, cloud computing, Big Data, machine learning/artificial intelligence, and autonomous operations, according to Mr. Georgiou.

Mr. Georgiou described the transition of the home thermostat to further explain. New, smart home thermostats can take into account information beyond simply the temperature in the room or the time of day. They can use additional sensors such as cameras or other devices to detect if people are home, away on vacation, or unplanned events. By applying self-learning and optimization techniques, significant savings in heating/cooling bills can be realized.

The concept of autonomous operation is not new, according to Mr. Georgiou. Back in 1967, the first autonomous trains began to operate. Their purpose was not to replace the operator, but to have flawless operation and consistency. As an industrial example, he mentioned a plant air separation unit that, in 2005, was equipped to run without humans being present. This was possible because the plant events were very well defined and predictable.

Futureproof Tugs: Efficient, Sustainable and Automated – MarineLink

Tug owners are cutting emissions and increasing automation. Subject to technology choices, greener tugs are a global phenomenon today, while the autonomous tugs of tomorrow are starting to emerge. David Lee S,enior Account Manager, New Build, ABB Marine & Ports, discusses tugs of the future.

Around the world, there is a growing appetite for hybrid and electric technology in tugboat operations. In the Asian and European towage markets, owners are responding to increasingly stringent regulations on air emissions in ports by investing in cleaner, more efficient propulsion. In the United States, too, the movement toward greener propulsion solutions is beginning to gather pace, partly driven by regulation but also by efforts from large corporations to reduce emissions using smarter solutions.

Energy efficiency tops the agendaTo assist vessels far larger than themselves, tugboats rely on the ability to generate a great deal of force, and in this regard, the conventional high-horsepower diesel engine serves them well. However, most of the time tugs operate far below their power capacity, with their engines therefore working at speeds well below optimum efficiency. At a time when vessel emissions have never been under closer scrutiny, tug owners have been at the frontline of those seeking smarter technologies that optimize efficiency whatever the engine load.

One result has been a growing preference for the types of hybrid and electric propulsion systems that use power more strategically, and can quickly align with a tugboats dynamic, unpredictable operations to achieve energy savings and reduced emissions. If a vessel is fitted with one of these systems during construction, it will also be far easier to upgrade as technology matures; in this sense, for its approximately 30-year lifespan, a tug specified with hybrid/electric propulsion today can be futureproof.

Finding the best fitThe motivation for going hybrid is clear. Yet with a variety of options available, tugboat operators need to make an informed decision. ABB Marine & Ports integrates everything from liquefied natural gas (LNG)/electric hybrid, battery hybrid and diesel electric to power take-off/power take-in (PTO/PTI), full battery and hydrogen fuel cells. Each option has its merits, and the vessels specific operating profile and preferences by technology users in different locations will determine which system is the best match.

For example, the combination of LNG as a marine fuel and electric motors handling dynamic loads delivers a highly efficient, low-emissions solution to the tugboat operator, but its suitability relies on the presence of fueling infrastructure in port. Full battery systems, meanwhile, can be among the most economical and environmentally friendly options but they can only be contemplated when necessary charging facilities are available.

With a wealth of experience in alternative propulsion technologies, ABB Marine & Ports aims to help tugboat owners to deploy their installed system in the most efficient way, no matter what their starting point.

A host of alternativesAn alternative propulsion technology of choice in the U.S., for example, is the PTO/PTI system, which strikes the balance between environmental and commercial drivers. This is an efficient hybrid technology in which the same unit can be used as a generator, booster motor or alternative power source. It entails only a partial shift from the conventional setup, which explains its popularity in a country that is still testing the waters on hybrid propulsion.

Sometimes, however, PTO/PTI systems are not sufficient for meeting emissions reduction targets because the operators profile is not the most suitable fit for them. It may be that the large main engine is still in use most of the time, and the power for the electric boost motors is supplied by smaller engines without advanced emission controls. This can in fact lead to increased carbon emissions.

Issues like this demand individual consideration, where ABB identified its role as that of a partner with operators as they seek smarter solutions, helping them to navigate the hybrid landscape and find the right option for their profile.

Electric. Digital. Connected. The same partnering role is being played in the development of autonomous tugs, particularly in east- and southeast-Asian markets, where operators are seeking to assist crew and minimize the risk of human error.

To give an example, ABB, in collaboration with Keppel O&Ms technology arm, Keppel Marine and Deepwater Technology (KMDTech), is working on jointly developing the technology for autonomous vessels and retrofitting a 32-meter harbor tugboat with leading-edge digital solutions, enabling autonomous vessel operations in the Port of Singapore at the end of 2020. Upon project completion, the vessel is anticipated to be South Asias first autonomous tug.

Interest in the beneficial technologies that point towards the future operation of autonomous tugboats is greater than ever, as the need for safe, fuel-efficient towage operations becomes more urgent. The tugs of the future will be electric, digital and connected.

Automation is the key for firms in building resilience – Livemint

NEW DELHI :The nationwide lockdown to stop the spread of the novel coronavirus, and the accompanying labour shortage and supply chain disruption have shown how several Indian businesses are severely dependent on humans to perform the most basic and repetitive tasks. Organizations that have automated their processes have managed to stay connected with their teams and customers, and avoided business disruption. In an interview for Mints Pivot or Perish series, Pandurang Kamat, chief technology officer, research and innovation at Persistent Systems Ltd, explains why automation is the key to building a resilient business and why it is needed more than ever in a post-covid world. Edited excerpts:

What new opportunities have the covid-19 lockdown created for automation?

Resilience has become the most important focus for almost any business.

Automation is a key tool that can help enterprises in building resilience.

Robotic or intelligent process automation not only automates processes that are manual, repetitive and rules-driven but also solves the resilience and cost aspect for an enterprise.

With the advent of covid-19, businesses like hospitals that have large back offices manned by humans are transitioning to automation by deploying conversational interfaces that can not only answer standard questions but can understand each customers context.

When it comes to screening, a lot of hospitals have deployed screening modules that have some element of automation.

The imperative to use automation has accelerated due to the covid-19 outbreak.

Has demand for automation increased due to the covid-19 crisis? Which sector is showing most interest?

Yes, demand for automation has definitely increased.

Automation forms the integral part of resilience strategy for any smart enterprise. What we have seen is a lot of healthcare facilities have adopted automation.

BFSI (banking, financial services and insurance) has been the other big industry where we have seen a lot of traction during covid-19.

One of our customers in the BFSI sector wanted to roll out a digital onboarding service so that their customers wont have to come to the branch.

We deployed an application for them that could scan documents, record KYC (know your customer) and help a limited set of back office agents in onboarding.

How can automation prepare enterprises for future exigencies like covid-19?

Automation is not always about bringing down cost and the number of employees. It is also about augmenting humans to get a larger output from smaller teams. It will allow enterprises to have 24x7 operations.

It also helps them move away from dependencies on a certain group of skilled people being present at a certain location.

Having distributed teams operating with the assistance of augmented intelligence is what automation brings to the table and this is why it will be adopted more and more.

How is AI taking automation to the next level and how is this combination relevant in the present context?

The first stage of automation was about replacing repetitive processes involving humans with an algorithm. Now, we are moving to the stage where we not only want to replace the repetitive processes but are also using intelligence to interpret and understand the data.

For instance, in a large business that has been getting invoices from different types of vendors and in different formats like PDF or paper documents, in their invoice automation processing pipeline, they will have to build intelligence that can recognize the different invoice types and fields and their role in the invoice structure and then populate their ERP system with that information.

Intelligence can also help in deciding actions that require both checklist and context-based processes.

Intelligence can be put in the pipeline to assist humans in making faster and more accurate decisions.

Cost would discourage many companies, especially smaller business, from automation. How do you ensure that they are not left behind again in the race to automation?

I agree that licensing costs are a challenge, especially for smaller organizations.

I think it is also a question of how service providers like us put an ROI (return on investment) picture in front of the customer.

This topic often comes up in our conversations with customers and we typically try to position it in terms of what kind of value they can derive and how they can amortize the cost around it.

Typically, there is the challenge of IT integration and time, and human effort required and that also needs to be factored in the ROI.

Automation arrives at manufacturing business | TheBusinessDesk.com – The Business Desk

Slaithwaite-based manufacturer Salamander Fabrications has welcomed an automated laser and integrated handling system from Switzerland and Italy to cut and process sheet metal twice as quick as its existing machinery.

The introduction of the 6Kw Bystronic laser and automated warehouse that should enable the team to switch between profiling one material to the next in under four minutes had been put on hold following the Coronavirus outbreak.

However, the company has now been able to resume activity with hopes of having the finishing touches applied by the end of July 2020.

The whole system sits at over 25m x 15m x 4.5m in height and can cut a variety of aluminium, steels and yellow metals.

It is expected to increase the businesss production capacity by up to 70%.

Workers will be trained on how to fully operate the integrated system and mentor others. And the company has used some of a 240,000 funding pot granted by the Leeds City Region Partnership (LEP) to bring over the impressive piece of kit from central Europe.

Managing director, Michael Haskell, said: Its a big day for everyone at Salamander Fabrications as we welcome such a stunning piece of kit that will further enhance the speed in which we can react to customer requirements.

This kind of automation not only optimises our material flow, it improves our machine use, provides us with a greater level of reliability and upskills our workforce to operate first-class machinery.

Salamander Fabrications has previously integrated collaborative robotic welding into its operations to cater for a number of substantial contracts including one to supply components for a large rail refurbishment assignment.

The firm, which employs 50 people, has more than 50 years experience in the sheet metal industry producing precision products for a range of sectors including rail, automotive, agriculture and retail.

CMU team evaluates range and battery tradeoffs between vehicle automation and electrification – Green Car Congress

A team of researchers at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) has used a vehicle dynamics model to evaluate the trade-off between automation and electric vehicle range and battery longevity. The researchers compared vehicle-level energy use, range and battery life of a vehicle equipped to attain Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) levels 45 automation to human-driven EVs by undertaking a careful consideration of the effect on vehicle-level energy use of the different components needed for automated driving, as well as the potential increase in drag from LiDAR (light detection and ranging).

They found that automation will likely reduce electric vehicle range by 510% for suburban driving and by 1015% for city driving. The effect on range is strongly influenced by sensor drag for suburban driving and computing loads for city driving. They also found that the impact of automation on battery longevity is negligible. Their paper is published in Nature Energy.

Box plot showing the range impact for the composite drive profile and for automated solutions with and without LiDAR. The y axis shows the percentage change in range for the AEVcompared to the base EV. The horizontal red line is the median change in range, and the red data points are the data that are beyond the whisker where the maximum whisker length is 1.5 times theinterquartile range. The x axis lists the five EVs considered in the analysis. Mohan et al.

While some commentators have suggested that the power and energy requirements of automation mean that the first automated vehicles will be gaselectric hybrids, our results suggest that this need not be the case if automakers can implement energy-efficient computing and aerodynamic sensor stacks.

Mohan et al.

Two of the researchers had developed a physics-based vehicle dynamics model to estimate the energy demands of an EV given a realistic driving profile. Using a realistic velocity profile with a 1 s temporal resolution the model calculates the instantaneous power needed each second to overcome vehicle inertia, aerodynamic drag and road friction.

The CMU team extended the model for autonomous electric vehicles (AEVs) by adding the weight of the different components to the mass of the vehicle and battery pack, and increasing the drag coefficient for automated solutions with a roof-based spinning LiDAR.

If no LiDAR is used, or if solid-state LiDAR that is incorporated into the aerodynamic profile of the vehicle is used, the increase in drag is zero. They also modified the velocity profile to account for potentially smoother driving and add the computing and sensor loads at each second.

Keeping track of the total energy used, they repeated the driving profile until the battery was fully depleted. They then compared the resulting range estimates for a given battery capacity to conventional EVs.

All underlying data are publicly available at https://github.com/battmodels/Automation-EV-Range. Source data are provided with the paper.

One third of Indigenous workers in Canada in jobs facing automation, says report – Turtle Island News

By Tara Deschamps

THE CANADIAN PRESS

TORONTO- One-third of Canadas Indigenous workers are in jobs facing a high risk of automation, a new report has found.

Researchers at the Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business, Ryerson Universitys Diversity Institute and the Future Skills Centre spent roughly a year studying 33 sectors and how advances in automation will affect Indigenous workers in those industries.

About 250,000 jobs, or 33.8 per cent of roles held by Indigenous workers across Canada, are currently concentrated in industries with a high risk of automation, says the report released on Monday.

Tabitha BullCCAB

Theres a lot of research that goes into the economy, but very rarely is there an Indigenous lens put on it, said Tabatha Bull, chief executive at the Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business and a member of the Nipissing First Nation.

This really puts a lens on the difficulties and potential barriers Indigenous people face to be on an equal playing field.

Indigenous people in Canada represent four per cent of the total labour force and generate a combined household income of about $30 billion a year, according to Statistics Canada.

Bulls study showed that Indigenous workers in British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, the Northwest Territories, Nunavut and Prince Edward Island are more at risk from automation than non-Indigenous workers in these provinces.

The research also found that 131,000 Indigenous workers are employed in sectors with the highest levels of automation risk, including accommodation and food services, retail trade, construction, transportation and warehousing, and management and administration.

Those at-risk industries account for approximately $2.43 billion of Indigenous wage revenue.

Indigenous workers tend to be more concentrated in these at-risk industries because of historical and geographical factors that have resulted in structural inequality lasting decades, said Wendy Cukier, the founder and academic director at the Diversity Institute and a research lead at both the Future Skills Centre and Women

Entrepreneurship Knowledge Hub.

We know that Indigenous people have been disadvantaged in terms of opportunities for developing skills, for example, in the high-end information communications technology sector, where jobs tend to be safer from the risk of automation than other jobs that require lower level skills, said Cukier.

In the construction industry, she has already noticed computerization eliminating jobs in architecture, design and surveying and an increase of robotics in the transportation and warehousing sector.

Its even become common to see administrative roles eliminated because offices can resort to using iPads at a front entryway to admit people to a facility rather than having a receptionist, Cukier pointed out.

Jobs are at risk for non-salaried workers as well.

About 49,000 Indigenous individuals in Canada are listed as self-employed and many are in at-risk industries.

To protect their work and ensure Indigenous people have an opportunity to pivot or to land jobs that are less at-risk, Bull said the country must look at improving access and the quality of education for Indigenous communities, which have the fastest growing youth rates.

Improving infrastructure and working with policy-makers is key too, she said.

We really need to look at our corporations and businesses and how are we educating senior leadership, at the board level and government about the history and the gaps that exist.

Why automation will play a key role in the future of retail – Telegraph.co.uk

As Britain cautiously emerges from coronavirus lockdown, automation technology is proving crucial to retailers hoping to tempt customers to spend again, according to retail experts.

During the pandemic, retailers such as Aldi used automation to reassure nervous customers. The supermarket pioneered a traffic-light system to show shoppers when to enter. McDonalds trialled a social-distancing restaurant in the Netherlands, with automated ordering and contact between staff and customers minimised.

This is a really pivotal moment for the uptake of automation in retail, both on the front and back end

For bricks-and-mortar retailers, the recovery from coronavirus looks set to be challenging, with two in five (42pc) consumers intending to shop online more, according to research by ChannelAdvisor and Dynata.

But this turbulent period offers quick-thinking retailers new opportunities, says Phil Jones. managing director at business technology solutions provider Brother UK. Its important to remember that opportunities often arise from adversity. Be fast on your feet and focus on adapting, rather than optimising, to seize the openings that will come.

Mr Jones says there are five key themes that business leaders must consider to reshape their companies for the post-pandemic environment. The first is reorganising their business model or cost structure; then enhancing what they did before; pivoting to reinvent where needed; creating innovations; or capitalising to grow exponentially from what is.

Retailers that have adopted automation weathered the crisis in better shape, says Miya Knights, co-author of Omnichannel Retail. And that trend looks set to continue. Covid-19 has only accelerated the trend towards more complex automated robotics and AI [artificial intelligence] systems.

Those that did not have sophisticated forecasting and planning systems were unable to address out-of-stocks as fast as those who did, losing out on sales and potentially damaging customer relations and brand image.

The automated front end of a transactional ecommerce website or an AI chatbot may have been the only way non-essential businesses stayed open or in touch with customers during lockdown. Those without that connection have suffered.

Businesses need to build on this to form a digital connection with their customers, Ms Knights believes. Businesses now need to make sure they have a digital connection to their customers that is as tightly coupled to their operational systems as possible, she says.

This is so that any automation investments not only improve trading efficiency and resilience in the face of a second wave [of coronavirus], but can also help the business stay current by giving customers more of what they want now and into the future.

Coming out of lockdown offers an opportunity for retailers to reassure customers using technology, while also pioneering new ideas, says Erik Mueller-Ali, director of speciality retail at retail architect CallisonRTKL. This is a really pivotal moment for the uptake of automation in retail, both on the front and back end, he says.

Retailers have talked for years about creating the seamless digital-to-real-world customer journey. Low-touch and contactless transactions are now mission-critical considerations.

Companies are already embracing automation to bridge the world of offline and online retail

Automation can be leveraged for both optimal customer convenience and enhanced experience, while still providing comfort and reassurance to consumers. This can take the shape of digital click-and-collect functions in more localised places; 24-hour vending machines; or augmented reality fitting options and interactive in-store displays.

Automated self-checkouts or even checkout-free transactions offer further streamlining opportunities, while also easing the all-important margins for retailers and freeing necessary staff for value-added services.

Companies are already embracing automation to bridge the world of offline and online retail, says Peter Scott, head of retail consultancy at Graystone Strategy. Some retailers are already doing this, like PC World where you can book a slot to speak to a real person who is in store from the comfort of your home.

They will show you the range and help you select the product thats right for you. You then buy it and collect it from the store at an agreed time.

This sort of mixture of online and offline will grow ever more important, Mr Scott believes. Quantum-leaping into the future, there could be virtual shopping putting on a headset and going shopping, interacting with virtual assistants, he says. The key here is to join the digital to the physical so that it is seamless.

From streamlining existing processes to monitoring and controlling expenditure, successful business transformation is vital to remaining competitive.
