MUMBAI :After reporting lower-than-estimated numbers in the first quarter, IT services major Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) is confident that long-term client relations will survive the pandemic. In an interview, N. Ganapathy Subramaniam, chief operating officer, TCS, says the company is mobilizing support for clients through automation, remote working solutions and cybersecurity. Edited excerpts:

The top verticalsbanking, financial services and retail and consumer packaged goodssuffered double-digit setbacks in Q1. How will TCS look at business continuity from hereon?

In Q1, everybody was concerned about the economic impact of the lockdown globally, and was thinking of deferring discretionary spends across verticals. Clients are conserving resources and we are giving them optimization levers. Half of retail is stressed out and facing bankruptcy, while UK clients are facing the double whammy of Brexit and covid-19. Verticals, such as travel and hospitality, and media and broadcasting, have been hurt by the cancellation of major events such as the Olympics.

Some clients have requested to not even bill them in their current situation and we are supporting them since we have long-term relations. We have reduced the workforce and brought in automation to support the clients. As part of the 37-odd deals that transitioned this quarter, we on-boarded little over 1,000 client employees in India, the US, etc.

You have announced a number of large deals in the past eight quarters, and had an above-average deal total contract value (TCV) of $6.9 billion. Are clients not renegotiating now?

We need to have this $5-6 billion TCV range to ensure that we keep growing. Each of these quarters have at least one or two large deals, which are long-term (5-7 years). We are pulling revenue from these deals and are not seeing major requirements to renegotiate or defer. Both new and renewal deals are happening. There is demand for cybersecurity, cloud and analytics solutions, as part of remote working and digital transformation initiatives, which are being bundled with secure borderless workspaces (SBWS).

Do you see any revenue opportunity from SBWS?

We dont know yet if this is going to be a sizeable business, but the core focus is to enable secure connectivity, engage with employees and monitor productivity. Clients have started realizing how well the SBWS solution works and increasingly want us to implement it. So, the whole process of prospecting, selling, contracting and on-boarding clients has progressed remotely through the quarter.

We have SBWS customers across banking, capital markets, communication, etc. A lot of it will be Artificial Intelligence- and algorithm-driven, and is also integrated as part of the Ignio platform offering.

Will TCS reassess the real estate footprint, now that the 25% employee presence plan is final?

We have not looked at real estate from that perspective. At the same time, we are staying invested in all our 118 development centres globally. We altered them so that people can come to these offices safely when required.

Earlier, we were limited by the fact that a particular customer could only be addressed from a development centre in maybe Hungary and Chennai. Which means that talent recruitment was restricted, but now we can link up talent from anywhere like Nagpur, Guwahati, etc. Such talent may have earlier missed the opportunity to work with this customer, but SBWS will allow them to do that. We will be able to increase the office presence to 5% this month.

TCS has taken a stand on the H-1B visa ban. How much will it impact business?

You have to work with the local law and still be meaningful to your customers. We have invested in the US, created development centres and have a strong workforce there. In the short term, if visas are not renewed, some people will come back and customers will be addressed through SBWS.

But in the long term, for transformational projects, there is a need for people to be able to work on-shore with the right talent mix, sourcing and delivery ecosystem.

VA Wants to Automate Digitization of its 5-Mile-High Electronic Health Record Backlog – Nextgov

The Veterans Affairs Department is on the cusp of deploying a massive electronic health records system and wants to know if robotic automation can help.

The VA originally planned to deploy the first instance of the new EHR system at the Mann-Grandstaff Medical Center in Spokane, Washington, this past March. However, officials announced in February that the initial rollout would be delayed, later telling Congress the agency planned to launch the new EHR system in July. That deadline has since been pushed further as the VA deals with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

As the system reaches full operating capability, VA health care providers and staff will need to ensure all health recordsold and neware digitized and linked with the correct patients and clinicians. Integrating and deploying an electronic health record system is incredibly difficult, made more so if the data being digitized is unstructured or otherwise not machine-readablea perennial problem with health data.

VA is looking at robotic process automation, or RPA, as a potential solution and issued a request for information Wednesday to hear from the contractor community.

The Department of Veterans Affairs is investigating automation solutions to streamline the flow of external clinical document sets into its electronic health record system, the RFI states.

In the near term, VA plans to use the automated system to cull some of its records digitization backlog, which, as of July 2018 had reached nearly 600,000 documents that, if stacked, would reach five miles high, according to the VA inspector general.

In the future, VA officials plan to integrate the RPA system with the current,agency-built VistA EHR system, as well as the new Cerner Millennium platform.

According to the RFI, a working solution will have three core capabilities:

Success will be measured by the number of documents processed within a given timeframe, including comparing that number with those that need human intervention; how accurately documents are linked to the correct patient and care provider; and the ability for the algorithm to learn and improve over time, especially when coversheets with relevant, well-marked information are not included with the documents.

Azmin: M’sia flooded with foreign workers, must shift to automation – The Star Online

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has been flooded with five million foreign workers, including those without permit, because of over-reliance on hard labour, says Senior Minister Datuk Seri Azmin Ali.

The International Trade and Industry Minister said the Covid-19 pandemic had triggered the need for industry players to quickly shift to automation and robotics to reduce reliance on a massive foreign workforce.

"This is among the aspects that will be emphasised in the 12th Malaysia Plan," he said on Saturday (July 11) after opening the Azmida Technical College in Kampung Nakhoda here.

Earlier in his speech, Azmin announced a RM2mil allocation to sponsor 100 students to take up technical courses at Azmida.

"To attract hi-tech investment, we must focus on human capital development to meet the requirements of the industry," he said.

He said Azmida College also trained students from poor households, orphans and the disabled.

The Covid-19 had forced some from the M40 (middle income group) to fall into the B40 (low income) category, he added.

"And those in the B40 are in a worst situation," he said.

He lauded training centres like Azmida College for providing opportunities for students from poor households to acquire high skills and enjoy a better life.

He called on technical colleges to provide courses in automation, chemistry, mould and die, among others, to meet the demands of new industries.

He also said there were 1,185 job openings at 105 companies in 16 sectors including transport and textile.

To the authors and proponents of this view, I have two words - chill, dude.

No one is or should be claiming that industrial automation has reached some exalted state of perfection. The examples about the limitations of automation often point out a robots inability to handle variability or small sizes or perform the most exacting applications of glue, etc.

And they are right.Automation cannot handle every arbitrary situation. What the articles fail to point out, or even consider, is the vast array of cases where industrial automation repeatedly and reliably performs flawlessly.

The lack of nuance in the discussion reminds me of the strange place that autonomous driving finds itself in today if a technology can't handle 100% of the cases, including all the edge cases, then it is failing to live up to the promise.Never mind the fact that the technology is good enough to handle many situations, and airplanes regularly use similar software-based guidance systems for take-off and landing

For the record, humans dont perform perfectly either, whether driving or doing factory work. Humans fail when they get tired, bored, or distracted.Industrial automation projects fail when they are too ambitious in their goals or poorly defined and designed. When properly thought through, industrial automation can handle more cases than thought previously possible. This continues to improve every day.

Here are some of the assertions made about automation. Three of them could be considered fibs. One is just a lie.

Fib: Companies havent been successful with industrial automation

Truth:The examples of successful industrial automation far outnumber the failures

Just like any new technology, some implementations of this technology have been busts. Its important to understand that these are the exceptions, not the rule. It almost always comes down to setting unrealistic goals and timelines, and not having the right talent or partner to accomplish your goals. I remember a time when enterprise software would get a black eye, back in the early 2000s.Those days are now long-forgotten almost every company today deploys some form of enterprise software through a software-as-a-service (SaaS) approach and is wildly successful doing it.

What changed?For one, the technology got better. SaaS took care of deployment and configuration challenges.For another, companies got smarter, and goals got more realistic.

The same is true for automation.For every story of a failed implementation, theres ten like this - a company that makes 630,000 control panels for security systems each year but needs to get that to a million units to satisfy customer demand. Using factory automation, that customer ramped production up to 1.1 million and realized a 34% savings at the same time. Or the manufacturer of coffee makers that was getting a yield of only 60% from one assembly line, and used automation to increase that to 98%.

Fib: Automation is an expensive, time-consuming and bespoke process

Truth: Thanks to advances in technology, it is increasingly fast, economical and flexible

The world of industrial automation is reasonably mature.There are hundreds of system integrators who can build you bespoke systems to carry out a single task, or a series of tasks, millions of times.This is how Coca-Cola gets its bottles filled, and General Motors gets its cars welded.The problem with such "hard automation" is that it is only economical on high volume, high capital investment projects.Products that change frequently like consumer products or network infrastructure devices are ill-suited for this type of automation.Fortunately, sensors and computing infrastructure have now evolved to become useful to problems such as this. Computer vision and machine learning can now be applied to make industrial automation based on standard, configurable products rather than bespoke implementations.

When a factory automates part of its production, it often finds it needs fewer workers to make assemblies or fasten screws. That is not the same as needing fewer workers, period.
