NASA – Why the World Didn’t End Yesterday – Video

NASA - Why the World Didn #39;t End Yesterday
The video claims that all apocalyptic theories are built on a massive misconception. John Carlson, director of the Center for archeo-astronomy, said the Mayan calendar in fact does not end December 21, 2012. Apocalypse in 2012? History, myth and science – Video

Apocalypse in 2012? History, myth and science
Dr Francisco Diego Quintana, Honorary Research Associate, UCL Department of Physics and Astronomy Prof Elizabeth Graham, Professor of Mesoamerican Archaeology, UCL Institute of Archaeology Did the Classic Maya really predict the end of the world on 21 December 2012? What caused them to record a date that would occur over a thousand years into their future? This lecture reviews a variety of apocalyptic prophecies, specially the one for this year, in the light of scientific research into the formation, development and eventual destruction of entire solar systems, including ours.From:UCLLHLViews:0 0ratingsTime:38:39More inEducation

Kate Becker: Visible Universe gift guide 2012

This year brought plenty of gifts for astronomy lovers. The Curiosity rover landed safely on Mars and took its first Martian soil samples. The Voyager spacecraft continued their journey to the outer limits of our solar system. Dozens of new exoplanets were discovered, including at least two that could be habitable.

Passing the alcohol test: Fundamental properties of molecules have not changed during the past seven billion years

The mass ratio of protons and electrons is deemed to be a universal constant. And rightly so, as the latest radio-astronomy observations of a distant galaxy have shown. Scientists used the 100-metre radio telescope in Effelsberg to measure absorption lines of the methanol molecule at a number of characteristic frequencies. The researchers analysed the spectrum of the simplest of all the alcohols ...

33. Mayan Astronomy Office Unearthed

It's not often that a single discovery can illuminate both the history of science and ancient office culture—but that is what happened in the ancient Mayan megacity of Xultun, in present-day Guatemala. There, researchers from Boston University and the University of Texas unearthed a small room, two walls of which were marked with astronomical tables predicting movements of the moon, Venus, and ...

Bingeing Black Hole Belches Brightly – Video

Bingeing Black Hole Belches Brightly
A bingeing black hole in the closest large galaxy, Andromeda, burps a bright X-ray blast. The cosmic belch proves that relatively small black holes, about 10x our Sun #39;s mass, can blast the ultra-luminous X-ray outbursts (ULX #39;s) that scientists see. The Crossroads of Space Exploration: Dr. James R. Webb @ TEDxFIU – Video

The Crossroads of Space Exploration: Dr. James R. Webb @ TEDxFIU
James Webb is FIU #39;s resident astronomer. With unrivaled enthusiasm for space exploration, the physics professor has introduced the university and South Florida community to the universe. Every semester, James Webb steps out of the classroom and hosts a series of star parties. These events feature a lecture designed so anyone can understand the complexity of the universe and are capped off by a chance at some stargazing. For 20 years, Webb has worked to build an on-campus observatory. In 2012, FIU broke ground on the Stocker AstroScience Center, a four-story astronomy observatory that will benefit 700 students every semester. When he is not teaching or speaking at local museums or planetariums, Webb performs with his guitar at local coffee shops. His repertoire includes original songs like "The Black Hole Song." The director of the Southeastern Association for Research in Astronomy Observatory at Kitt Peak National Observatory, Webb has had access to five satellite observatories and been awarded 15 research grants.From:TEDxTalksViews:2 0ratingsTime:12:40More inEducation
