Murad® Debuts Newest Product Innovation in Anti-Aging Acne Line: Pore & Line Minimizing Hydrator

EL SEGUNDO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

Murad, Inc. announced today the launch of the latest innovation in its Anti-Aging Acne line - Pore & Line Minimizing Hydrator. This multi-tasking hydrator helps to maintain fresh, youthful skin by clearing and tightening pores for a refined complexion. Additionally, Murads Pore & Line Minimizing Hydrator provides essential hydration to soothe and help heal breakouts with an age-balancing formula that boosts collagen to minimize signs of aging and leave skin plumper and smoother.

Acne is not just a problem for teens. Because acne can be triggered by a number of factors, such as hormones, stress and environment, more and more women are beginning to complain of acne as they get older, said Howard Murad, M.D., FAAD, Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine at UCLA and founder of Murad, Inc. To help combat both aging and acne simultaneously, we formulate efficacious products that provide users with maximum benefits, while also recommending an Inclusive Health approach that combines topical care, internal care and a focus on a sense of self to optimize skin health.

Pore & Line Minimizing Hydrator works to reduce existing breakouts and prevent new blemishes from forming, while repairing skins barrier and optimizing collagen levels to minimize the signs of aging. Formulated with Kombucha Collagen Defense to stimulate collagen production and inhibit its breakdown, Lentil Seed Extract and Witch Hazel to tighten pores and help control excess oil and Cinnamon Extract to restore skin surface by reducing inflammation and optimizing oil production, Pore & Line Minimizing Hydrator is ideal for those who suffer from adult breakouts.

Regardless of skin type, pore size increases with age; this condition is exacerbated for those with acneic skin, said Jeff Murad, Vice President of Product Development. We created Pore & Line Minimizing Hydrator to address this concern for our Anti-Aging Acne consumers whose skin type is already prone to larger pores.

As the latest product addition to Murads Anti-Aging Acne line, created to reduce acne and aging concerns simultaneously, Pore & Line Minimizing Hydrator is the ideal complement to the entire family of products.

Pore & Line Minimizing Hydrator ($49.50 for 1.7 FL. OZ.) is available on Murad.com, at the Murad Inclusive Health Spa and Murad Inclusive Health Medical Group beginning August 2012 and will be available in salons, spas and at Sephora and Ulta September 2012. The new face-lifting acupuncture treatment that claims to take five years off (but could you handle the needles?)

By Daily Mail Reporter

PUBLISHED: 16:27 EST, 14 August 2012 | UPDATED: 16:27 EST, 14 August 2012

A non-surgical alternative to Botox and cosmetic surgery is fast becoming the new trend for anti-aging procedures.

AcuFacial, a process that involves strategically placing tiny needles on the body and face, has doctors claiming patients can come away looking five to ten years younger.

Shellie Goldstein, a New York acupuncturist, told Good Morning America: 'We are taking your face to the gym, were exercising it. We have muscles in our body, we have muscles in our face, there is no other procedure that actually exercises the muscles and improves circulation in your skin.'

AcuFacial: A non-surgical alternative to botox and cosmetic surgery fast becoming the new trend for anti-aging

Despite the procedure's lack of scientific backing, people are still choosing the process, which costs $150-$200 per session, with results being seen after ten sessions.

While the results of cosmetic surgery can be unnatural, AcuFacial claims to give men and women a similar outcome without having to pull the skin or put anything underneath.

'We're working with your energy. The energy of your body, to lift it up, to work with the muscles of your face, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, improve muscle tone and give it a beautiful overall glow and complexion,' Ms Goldstein said.

Vitamin D and cancer – nine facts "they" won't tell you

by: Aurora Geib
Before, to be diagnosed with the big C seemed to be an implied death sentence. Patients even go through a stage of self-denial. Who can blame them? Conventional medicine paints a rather bleak future for cancer patients and the remedy it offers does nothing to improve their quality of life, nausea and falling hair not to mention.
However, the recent breakthroughs in science have allowed a peek into the true nature of cancer, allowing researchers to consider the concept of nutritional care. They are now faced with the idea that preventing and maybe even reversing cancer may not necessarily involve the development of expensive drugs but something already available in nature: food and sunshine! (http://dreddyclinic.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=3)
Just the facts
If something so powerful is actually available for everyone, why wouldn't someone take advantage of it?
The recent discovery that the body, with the help of vitamin D, possesses the capacity to fight many chronic illnesses has spurred the interest of many researchers - especially on the possibilities the sunshine vitamin can offer with regard to the prevention and reversal of diseases like cancer. A brief rundown of some facts, revealed by recent studies, can give us a perspective on how vitamin D can help.Read more…

Lunch & Learn session Wednesday

VAIL Vail Vitality Center's popular Lunch & Learn series continues Wednesday with a lecture from Dr. Heidi Archer on The Importance of the Thyroid Gland.

The thyroid gland is a two-inch long gland in the neck that has an important job: producing the thyroid hormones that regulate the body's metabolic function (the body's use of energy).

All of the hormones in your body work together, so levels of one hormone affect all of your other hormones, including thyroid hormone levels, Archer said. At Vail Vitality Center we can test your current hormone levels for any imbalances and help you bring your hormones back into harmony.

A sluggish thyroid, or hypothyroidism, is the most common type of thyroid imbalance. It occurs when the thyroid gland is under-active and may cause symptoms including:

General fatigue waking up exhausted no matter how much sleep you get.

Hair loss.

Weight gain (both fluid and fat) despite working out more and eating less.

Puffiness in the face and/or swelling of the ankles.

Low body temperature ice cold hands or feet.

Digestive problems (constipation, irritable bowel).

Heart Patients Benefit From At-Home Care, Study Finds

(HealthDay News) -- Patients with worsening chronic heart failure may find "hospital-at-home" care is a good alternative to treatment in a traditional hospital, Italian researchers report.

An estimated 5 million North Americans suffer from chronic heart failure, a condition in which the heart struggles to pump blood to the body. In the United States, worsening chronic heart failure is the cause of more than 1 million hospital admissions a year, and patients have a 50 percent risk of readmission within six months of discharge, according to the authors of a study published in the Sept. 28 issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine.

But the hospital is often dangerous in itself, the study authors noted.

In the study, Dr. Vittoria Tibaldi and colleagues at the University of Torino, San Giovanni Battista Hospital in Torino, Italy, enrolled patients aged 75 years or older with worsening chronic heart failure. Some were treated at a general medical ward, while others received hospital-at-home care supervised by a doctor. Read more…

Ways to Reduce Body Odor

You know you're slightly pungent after a hard Spinning class or garlicky dinner. But it turns out that some less expected factorslike how quickly you get dressed in the morning, the amount of carbs you eat, or whether you snorecan also affect your BO, breath, gassiness, and more.

Here's how to fix it, fast.

1. You Don't Towel Off After Showering A speedy post-shower rubdown may end up causing a problem later on. That's because moisture can get trapped between folds of skin, like below your breasts, under your love handles, or even between your toes, says Dr. Marina Peredo, a board-certified dermatologist in private practice in Smithtown, N.Y. "There's no access to air there, and it's easier for bacteria and fungi to multiply and mix with sweat, causing odor and irritation," she says.

Fix it: Peredo recommends this trick to her patients: "After you dry off, set a blow-dryer to cool and wave it over your belly, groin, feetanywhere that gets uncomfortably sweaty." You can also sprinkle an absorbent powder with antifungal properties onto your skin or in your shoes.

10 Worst Germ Hot Spots

2. You Love Spicy Foods Foods with pungent ingredients, such as curry, garlic, and other spices, can not only cause bad breath, but also a bit of a body odor.

When digested, these foods produce several stinky sulfur-containing gases. Most of these byproducts are metabolized in the intestines and liver, but some, such as allyl methyl sulfide, are absorbed into the bloodstream and released through your lungs and pores, an effect that can last for a few hours or more, says Dr. Debra Jaliman, assistant professor of dermatology at Mt. Sinai School of Medicine.

Fix it: You can temporarily mask bad breath with mouthwash or by chewing a bit of fresh parsley, mint, or fennel seeds, but you'll have to wait until your body is done digesting before all the odor is completely gone. Sit down to a spicy meal in good company; it's tough to smell it on others if you all eat the same thing, says Richard Price, DMD, spokesperson for the American Dental Association. Avoid garlic-rich chow in the hours before an important meeting or date.

3. You BrushBut Only Your Teeth Neglect your tongue, and your breath may not be as fresh as you'd like. Your tongue is covered with thousands of small hairlike projections called papillae, which can trap and harbor tiny scraps of food. So even if you brush and floss regularly, small remains from your meals can hang behind, collecting bacteria and emitting hydrogen sulfide vaporsaka bad breath.

Fix it: Mouthwashes may help, but the best way to remove bacteria, dead cells, and food debris from the crevices of your tongue is with an inexpensive tongue scraper. Brushing your tongue with a soft-bristled toothbrush works well too. Gently clean as far back as you can without gagging. Also, switch to a toothpaste that contains chlorine dioxide or tea tree oil, a powerful disinfectant with a pleasant, eucalyptus-like smell.

Rare fungus enhances sexual prowess

From May to July every year, dozens of Nepalise fungus collectors scale up the Himalayas to find a rare caterpillar fungus believed to be an immunity booster and aphrodisiac.

Reuters reports the rare fungus is created when a spore attacks a caterpillar, killing it and creating the yarsagumba fungus which grows out of the insect's body.

The fungus is especially popular in Chinese medicine, fetching more than $US100 per kilo due to its many medicinal benefits.

'It is an aphrodisiac, it is used as a tonic, for vitality. Recent research also showed that it is useful for anti-tumour, and anti-aging drug,' Cordyceps research student Uttam Babu told Reuters.

The exportation of the fungus was only legalized in 2001 and since then sales have skyrocked, particularly in China.

Dipendra Bhandari, a film director who made a movie on the collecting of yarsagumba, explains the reason behind the super fungi's popularity.

'It's known to be used in Chinese traditional medicines since 1500 to 2000 ago. Speaking with various people during my research, I am told they use it mainly for the sexual powers,' he told Reuters.

Dr. Mao’s Wellness Central: Cool Down With Salads This Summer Season

Thinkstock

Courtesy Photo

The long, hot days of summer dont offer much encouragement for cooking in the kitchen over a hot stove. Instead, why not take advantage of the bounty of local seasonal fruits and veggies and cool yourself down with a fresh salad?

Salads are not only quick and simple to make, but with the right ingredients they can also bring you some serious health benefits. Start by choosing organic, locally-grown produce, which is packed with added nutrients and picked after it has ripened naturally. Studies regularly emerge about the hazardous effects of pesticides and herbicides used on commercial crops: cancer risk, inflammation, and reproductive imbalance, among other dangers. Pick food grown close to home: its better for your health, better for the environment, supports your local farmers, and has an unbeatable taste!

One item to note: Eating raw food all the time requires more energy for digestion and tends to put out the digestive fire, so dont forgo the stove altogether. As you will see below, many of these salads require some cooking as well.

1. Classic Beet Salad

Steam beets and slice into a salad of mixed greens and sliced avocado with a handful of pine nuts and walnuts. If you want to bulk up the salad, add crumbled soft tofu or shredded chicken.

What is this salad doing for you? This is an all-in-one anti-aging salad. Beets contain powerful nutrients that help protect against heart disease, birth defects, and cancer, especially colon cancer. The avocado and pine nuts are healthy fats and walnuts have omega-3 fatty acids, which bring heart health benefits.

2. Cooling Cucumber Salad

Thinly slice cucumbers, removing the peel if you prefer, and toss with red onions. Let this sit for 30 minutes, then top with apple cider vinegar mixed with Dijon mustard.

A mix of traditional, holistic medical care for patients

Dr. Susan Ashley, a family physician practicing in Liberty Lake, is also board certified in Anti-Aging and Regenerative Medicine and offers a mix of traditional and holistic medical care to patients of all ages. Her practice at Family Medicine Liberty Lake is a solo practice and also employs an ARNP, Heidi Kallestad. Together, they specialize in the following:

Bio-Identical hormone replacement therapy for both men and women. BHRT can reduce the risk of heart disease, dementia, osteoporosis and slow down the aging process. Unlike synthetic hormones, such as premarin, there is no increase in breast cancer risk. Balancing your hormones not only gives you more energy and vitality, but will make weight loss easier and increase lean muscle mass. These hormones include estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, DHEA, adrenals, thyroid, growth hormone, insulin and melatonin.

Fatigue and fibromyalgia. So many patients are plagued with unrelenting fatigue, often with a mixture of fibromyalgia and muscle pain, with no discernable cause or treatment. Many go from doctor to doctor in an attempt to alleviate some of their symptoms. Dr. Ashley's program for chronic fatigue has a high success rate and addresses the many causes and contributing factors involved. This involves not only balancing the hormones and aggresively treating adrenal fatigue, but making sure nutrition is balanced and proper supplementation is given. Sleep must be restored, and latent infections which can cause ongoing symptoms must be treated.

The newest tool in her fight against these chronic disorders involves measurement of the electro-magnetic energy fields of the body, and correction when mis-alignments occur. Called "Energy Medicine," this is well known in Europe and Asia, and is just now being introduced in our country. Correction of the human body electro-magnetic field will greatly increase the success rate for patients, and indeed, some will simply not improve until this issue is addressed.

Bio-Medical Treatment approach for Autism and ADHD. Autism is treatable! Both autism and ADHD have a common root cause, and can be successfully treated and, in some cases, cured. Dr. Ashley follows the treatment protocol of Dr. Kenneth Bock, and treats the underlying biochemical, metabolic and neurologic defects with positive results in every case. Drugs are rarely used and, indeed, simply cover up the symptoms rather than get to the root cause of the disease.

Anti-Aging Medicine - or, as some are starting to call it, "Advanced Medicine." There are so many exciting advances in the field of anti-aging medicine. If a patient is truly motivated, there are many things one can do to not only increase longevity, but improve the quality of life, such that an active, vital and energetic life can be expected into the 80s, 90s, and even past 100! If one looks at our DNA, we should be living to 125 years, so why is it cut short? Diet and lifestyle play a big factor, and environmental toxins. Newer advances, such as TA-65, a telomerase activator that lengthens our telomeres, and stem cell therapies are now available. Proper supplementation with the correct vitamin and mineral combination is so important, and the difference between common food grade supplements, and medical and pharmaceutical grade supplements are taught to every patient.

Alzheimers and other dementias. Much can be done to slow down or reverse the devastation caused by dementias, including high doses of omega-3's, increasing cholesterol to 225 range, high dose anti-oxidants such as astaxanthin, and a combination of coconut oil and MCT (medium chain triglyceride) oil. Patients are referred to the book "Alzheimers, what if there is a Cure" by Dr. Mary Newport to follow her protocol.

Food sensitivities and allergies - gluten sensitivity is dramatically increasing and, if ignored, can have devastating long-term consequences. Food sensitivities can be treated and, in many cases, completely reversed.

Obesity and weight loss - our biggest challenge in our society! Dr. Ashley also owns Healthy Living Liberty Lake, a weight loss and wellness clinic, which is certified by the American Academy of Bariatric Physicians. Obesity is a complex disease and treatment involving many treatment modalities, including the proper diet, increasing the fat-burning enzymes, detoxification of environmental toxins that can impede weight loss, balancing the hormones, and education on whole foods, glycemic index and basic nutrition. Prescription strength hcg is available for increased fat burning and preservation of muscle during weight loss, and appetite suppressants are used short-term if needed. Every patient is individualized, and even genetic testing can be done to pinpoint what kind of diet, based on genetics, would best suit the patient.

IV Nutritional therapy is used for many different reasons, including as part of the treatment for chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia, increased energy and vitality, to quickly rid a cold or flu, or as adjunctive therapy for those undergoing cancer treatments.

Jacobs moves Ooh La La Spa to Glen Carbon

Practice outgrows Maryville location

Sometimes your lifes path takes you in an unexpected direction.

Such is the case for Dr. Kristen Jacobs, owner of Ooh La La Spa, Anti-Aging and Wellness.

Jacobs completed her residency at Southern Illinois University-Springfield and had been serving the Mount Vernon community as a family practice physician when she decided she wanted to try Botox.

She became educated in administering it and soon she was offering several other anti-aging procedures.

Fascinated with aesthetic medicine, Jacobs opened Ooh La La Spa, Anti-Aging and Wellness, a practice dedicated to patient health and cosmetic medicine, in Maryville.

Within four years her business had outgrown its Maryville location and Jacobs found a new home for Ooh La La at 110 Cottonwood Road in Glen Carbon.

Jacobs explained that the business just snowballed."

It started with Botox and then we did fillers and laser. Then we added chemical peels and facials, and its kind of grown from there which is awesome, she said.

All that growth prompted the recent move to Glen Carbon. Thankfully our business is building like crazy and we just needed the space, Jacobs said. Plus I live in Glen Carbon so I wanted to support the Glen Carbon community.

Does the inside of your chest feel like Dantes inferno? This scorching sensation, known as heartburn, plagues roughly 20 percent of Americans at least once a week.

Over time, chronic heartburn can develop into the more serious gastritis or esophagitis, in which the lining of the stomach or esophagus erodes and ulcerates.

If you want to put out the flames, try the following natural remedies so you can tell the heat to hit the road!

Sizzling Symptoms

Heartburn often appears after a meal and can last for several hours. When we eat, our stomach acid increases, so excessive food and liquid can increase stomach acid that backs up into your esophagus.

This creates a scalding sensation behind the breastbone, which is often accompanied by the following:

-- burning in the throat or a hot, sour, acidic taste at the back of the throat

-- difficulty swallowing

-- chronic cough, sore throat, or hoarseness Seek immediate help if you experience severe chest pain, especially when accompanied by jaw or arm pain, or difficulty breathing. What Lights Your Fire? Trigger Foods

Happy Feet: Plastic Surgery for Best Foot Forward

Foot Plastic Surgery Is All the Rage, but Is It Safe?

July 20, 2012 (New York City) -- Are toes really the new nose?

Media reports of an uptick in toe and foot plastic surgery suggest that there is nothing that we won't do to put our best feet forward (and of course, sport sexy, strappy, and often pricey shoes). This includes getting our toes shortened, liposuctioned, or removed altogether.

Liposuction may help slim toes so they fit in pointy stiletto toe boxes, and some women opt to shorten a toe or remove one altogether so that they are less snug in the toe box.

Others still are signing up for laser treatments to zap away foot fungus and/or permanently remove hair on their toes and feet. There is also a surge in what are being called "Loub jobs," a plastic surgery procedure that allows women to wear their pricey Christian Louboutin shoes without pain.

"Foot beautification is definitely a trend," says Wendy Lewis. She is a New York City-based beauty consultant and author of several books, including Plastic Makes Perfect. "Many of these foot concerns are directly related to the shoes we wear."

Not everyone is on board. The American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society is against cosmetic foot surgery of any kind. According to the group, foot complications, including permanent nerve damage, infection, bleeding, scarring, and chronic pain when walking, may occur. According to this group, "Cosmetic foot surgery should not be considered in any circumstances."

Cheryl Burgess, MD, is an assistant clinical professor of dermatology at Georgetown University and George Washington University in Washington, D.C. Her foray into the world of foot plastic surgery involved treating people with HIV. These individuals tend to lose fat in their faces and other parts of their body due to the cocktail of medications they must take.

Word got out, and soon Burgess was injecting fat or other fillers such as Sculptra into the feet of women who wanted to wear Christian Louboutin shoes. This treatment has been dubbed a "Loub job."

According to Burgess, another popular foot fix is Botox injections to treat hammer toes. With hammertoes, there is a bend in the middle joint. She also uses Botox to curb excessive and often smelly sweating of the feet. It is already approved to treat excessive underarm sweating.

Why Athletes Risk Using Human Growth Hormone, Anabolic Steroids

By Daniel J. DeNoon WebMD Health News

Reviewed by Brunilda Nazario, MD

July 13, 2012 -- As in previous years, the 2012 Olympics likely will be marred by at least one doping scandal, experts predict.

Many athletes abuse human growth hormone and/or steroids to build muscle and strength. While elite athletes are in the spotlight, the problem is much greater in recreational athletes. For example, at least 1 in 16 high school students admits to using performance-enhancing steroids. And users rarely take just one kind of drug.

Why do athletes and young people do this? Are there any benefits? What are the risks? WebMD's FAQ is based on an Endocrine Society webinar featuring two experts on athletic doping:

Human growth hormone, HGH, is produced by the pituitary gland. It's not really a single hormone, Rogol says, but a mixture of several "isoforms" coded by several different genes.

Children do not develop normally if their bodies don't make enough growth hormone. Fortunately, researchers have used recombinant gene technology to produce large amounts of recombinant HGH, or rHGH, to treat them.

More recently, rHGH has been used for other reasons.

Additionally, those vitamins suffer degradation when they are subjected to UV rays, oxygen, or heat. The loss of strength is greater when the vitamin contents are spread across the full contents of bottled beverages, causing premixed vitamin drinks to lose their potency over time. The supplemental information printed on most premixed vitamin drinks is based on the ingredients at the time of bottling, not at the time of consumption.

"Many people are trying very hard to take responsibility and make the right choices when it comes to their health," said CJ Rapp, CEO and co-founder, Karma Culture LLC. Citing the recent actions of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to address this concern, Rapp said, "Consumers need to know that after just 90 days on a shelf, premixed drinks may have only 30 to 50 percent of their vitamins remaining and Karma's goal is to bring back the freshness of vitamins and truly transform water into wellness."

Introducing KarmaCap TechnologyKarma uses its proprietary KarmaCap Technology to keep vitamins and other essential ingredients protected and separate from water until it's time to drink. By introducing the vitamins only seconds or minutes from actual consumption, it optimizes the effectiveness of the nutrient-rich ingredients in Karma. The cap uses opaque plastic and a UV blocker to limit the vitamins' exposure to the elements and this breakthrough packaging also has a hermetic (airtight) seal between the cap and base, ensuring freshness and delivering maximum vitamin potency. Plus, it's easy to usewith just a push of a button, consumers control their own beverage destiny.

Along with your brother, Dr. Daoshing Ni, you founded the Tao of Wellness more than 25 years ago. What have been some of the keys to success for maintaining such a successful business in Santa Monica?

I have always felt that in life, everything you do should be done with a focus on exceptional quality and care. Whether you are providing a product or a service, people will always search for the best.

We have always maintained that we would rather have a happy patient that continues to come back then to have many patients that only come once.

As a result, we have been blessed with a flourishing practice that has grown to include offices in Newport Beach and Pasadena (summer 2012) to best serve our patients.

You two also founded Yo San University in Marina del Rey. What were the challenges and how did you overcome them?

The biggest challenges that we encountered while attempting to start Yo San University were rooted in the fact that we were young and nave about the processes involved with starting a school, and what we would need to do.

Two Drugs Safe for Rare Forms of Kidney Cancer

(HealthDay News) -- Using a combination of the drugs temsirolimus (Torisel) and Bryostatin appears to be safe in patients with metastatic kidney cancer, according to early data from 25 patients in a phase 1 trial.

The researchers said a pathway known as mTOR signaling promotes tumor cell proliferation and tumor blood vessel development. The temsirolimus-bryostatin combination blocks two portions of the mTOR signaling pathway, and the early data suggests the drugs may be active in patients with rare forms of renal cell cancer that are less likely to respond to other therapies.

"We have certainly seen sustained responses with this combination, which are encouraging," Dr. Elizabeth Plimack, a medical oncologist and attending physician at Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia, said in a news release from the center. Read more…

Even a Little Overweight, Inactivity Hurts the Heart

(HealthDay News) -- Even a few extra pounds and just a little inactivity increased the risk of heart failure in a major study of American doctors.

"What this study shows is that even overweight men who are not obese have an increase in heart failure risk," said Dr. Satish Kenchaiah, lead author of a report on the finding in the Dec. 23 issue of Circulation.

As for exercise, "even a little amount of physical activity appears to decrease the risk of heart failure," said Kenchaiah, who did the research as a epidemiologist at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston and is now at the U.S. National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.

The study has followed more than 21,000 doctors for two decades, measuring among other factors the influence of overweight and physical activity on development of heart failure, the progressive loss of ability to pump blood, which is often a prelude to major coronary events. Read more…
