About ZELTIQ Aesthetics, Inc.

ZELTIQ Aesthetics, Inc. (ZLTQ) is a medical technology company focused on developing and commercializing products utilizing its proprietary controlled-cooling technology platform. ZELTIQs first commercial product, the CoolSculpting System, is designed to selectively reduce stubborn fat bulges that may not respond to diet or exercise. CoolSculpting is based on the scientific principle that fat cells are more sensitive to cold than the overlying skin and surrounding tissues. CoolSculpting utilizes patented technology of precisely controlled cooling to reduce the temperature of fat cells in the treated area, which is intended to cause fat cell elimination through a natural biological process known as apoptosis. ZELTIQ developed CoolSculpting to safely, noticeably, and measurably reduce the fat layer within a treated fat bulge without requiring the patient to diet or exercise.

Be younger now

Today is the moment. And now is the time to take action. The population of the world is aging at a rapid rate. And according to a 2011 research paper from the Harvard School of Public Health, there will be close to a billion people over the age of 60 by 2020, doubling to nearly two billion by 2050.

This staggering number represents 22 percent of the worlds population. And it can only translate to one realitythat the business of anti-aging (or aging, for that matter) is a serious one.

A report by the MIT Age Lab reveals that the 50 and above age group represents the fastest-growing segment worldwide.

This new phenomenon has catapulted the wellness industry to a booming global business. In a report by the Global Spa Summit, it was stated that the beauty and anti-aging segment of the wellness industry was valued at $679.1 billion in 2012. And its still growing.

Nothing instant

With the growing demand for treatments to delay aging, there has been an unprecedented spike in the clamor for the quick fix. Instant is the operative word. And suddenly mushrooming are spas, beauty centers, and even beauty parlors offering procedures that may be questionable and often risky.

We have known of many instances where patients have been disfigured or lost their lives due to excessive treatments promising quick transformations. Apart from the risks, all anti-aging treatments are expensive and not within the reach of the average individual.

Truth be told, recapturing ones youth isnt a matter of popping super pills, sophisticated regimens, injections or surgery. The most effective anti-aging regimen is good health. While this is not meant to disparage conventional medicine which can offer effective ways to address health and beauty challenges, it has long been observed by health experts that the quality of ones life offers a longer-lasting effect on ones overall well-being and personal good looks.

Working with nature

This scenario seems all too familiar.

Trimcare™ Weight Loss and Anti-Aging, in association with Safe Laser Centers, Launches Innovative Body Makeover Contest

The contest is being run to celebrate the new partnership between Trimcare and the growing new Las Vegas weight loss and spa services company Safe Laser Centers.

Las Vegas, NV (PRWEB) October 04, 2012

The "WinShare" contest is called that way because it is based upon an innovative system that rewards social sharing in a way that allows participants to continuously increase their odds of winning during the course of the contest. What happens is that after entering the contest, a very simple one click process, participants are taken to special sharing page form which they can easily share the contest on social media and via email. At this point, for every person who enters the contest through this shared link, the sharer will automatically be awarded 10 additional entries that will be added to their total. Since there are no limits on extra entries or on the sharing timeframe (as long as the contest hasn't finished), prolific sharers can easily amass hundreds of entries to tilt the odds in their favor by having more tickets in the virtual raffle box.

Trimcare has been a pioneer in medically supervised weight loss treatment programs in Las Vegas for over 20 years. Founded by Dr. Ivan L. Goldsmith (triple board certified in the areas of Internal Medicine, Obesity, and Anti-aging),Trimcare is a leader in providing medically supervised weight loss programs. Trimcare has successfully treated over 20,000 patients in the past dozen years with novel obesity regimens designed to curb hunger, promote food avoidance, and extinguish binge or nighttime eating. Its program has successfully incorporated a proprietary brand of supplements, skin care products, food, weight loss programs, and hormone replacement therapies. As a leader in the integrated disciplines of weight loss and anti-aging therapies, Trimcare has been at the forefront of expanding awareness of the nation's Obesity Epidemic.

Safe Laser Centers sees the association with Dr. Goldsmith as a great opportunity to bring new weight programs to the people of Las Vegas. Spearheaded by Kristine Castro, a newcomer to the area who brings to the table expertise with the i-Lipo system and her extensive experience as a massage therapist. "I-Lipo works by delivering low level laser therapy to induce a chemical signal in fat cells that causes them to break down stored triglycerides or fats into free fatty acids and glycerol, which are released through the cell membranes," explains Castro. "Fat content is then released into the blood and transported around the body to tissues where it will be burned off during a period of post-treatment."

By targeting different areas in the body, patients can decide their own priorities such as choosing, for example, to focus on treating their love handles and/or saddle-bag regions. The low level lasers used in the i-Lipo treatment induce the target area to release fat even before exercise is begun. Designed to be used in tandem, the novel medical regimens used at Trimcare, consisting of Phentermine and Topamax, enable patients to make the lifestyle modifications needed to not only promote weight loss, but aid in the difficulties associated with weight maintenance. According to Dr. Goldsmith, Our patients notice the effects almost immediately. The combined therapies successfully cause a decreasing waist circumference, declines in % body fat, and lost pounds. When thus combined, it is not unusual for Trimcare patients to achieve a greater-than-10% weight loss in 90 days which far exceeds what is seen with diet and exercise alone.

Goldsmith and Castro envision expanding the association into other medical facilities and also stand alone clinics both within and outside Las Vegas and hope that this "WinShare" contest will help them show off the amazing non-invasive weight loss and body makeover capabilities of the partnership. The two businesses are passionate about their philosophy of promoting lifestyle style changes, including diet and exercise, as the cornerstone of any successful weight-loss attempt along with the notion of truly minimally invasive therapies or treatment; avoiding procedures like bariatric and plastic surgeries where the attendant risks are much greater for post-op complications and problems. The two companies also seek to facilitate access, offering financing though CareCredit.com

Both companies stress that weight loss needs to be tailored to individual patient needs. According to Kristine Castro, "i-Lipo combined with the Trimcare weight loss regimen allows most patients to take advantage of this treatment with minimum difficulties and provides safe, long term reproducible results as well as immediate effects that achieve a dramatic reshaping of body and reduction of cellulite." Significant results from Trimcare combined with i-Lipo commonly become apparent in as little as 30 days and the system is far less costly than liposuction while involving no pain, needles or downtime. "This is truly remarkable in its simplicity and we can't wait for more people to experience it for themselves," adds Castro. The "WinShare" contest runs from October 1st through October 31st .

Anti-aging medicine earns converts and critics

Dee Martin of Marietta leads an active life. At 51, she hits the gym five days a week. She eats organic foods. Her weekend activities include mountain hikes and bike riding. But for some reason, no matter how much she followed the rules, she never seemed to drop the little bit of weight she wanted to lose.

After a visit to Dr. Ken Knott for a shoulder injury led to a discussion about hormone levels and testing, Martin made the connection. She had an underactive thyroid.

To improve her thyroid function, she began taking a thyroid supplement. She also took bioidentical hormones hormones that are identical in molecular structure to hormones made in the body. She tweaked her diet, per Dr. Knotts suggestions. In two months, Martin lost 15 pounds. Her skin, which had been dry and loose a trait she had assumed shed inherited from her mother became smoother and firmer, with her wrinkles less noticeable.

Martin was hooked on a growing, if controversial, medical focus known as anti-aging medicine.

I just want to age gracefully the way I am supposed to, Martin said. With Dr. Knotts program, you dont feel as old or look as old.

Knott is one of more than 100 doctors in the state listed with the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine (A4M), an organization created in 1992 to advance technologies that prevent and treat age-related disease as well as support research on extending life. Anti-aging medicine is not recognized as a specialty by the American Board of Medical Specialties. Doctors who practice anti-aging medicine use a range of treatments and therapies, including bioidentical hormones and supplements, that continue to be the subject of debate in the medical community.

Using hormones to replace a deficiency is generally accepted by most physicians, said Dr. Lawrence Phillips, an endocrinologist at Emory University Hospital. But using hormones to battle old age or improve health in non-deficient individuals is unproven.

No research has shown that hormone therapies add years to life or prevent age-related frailty, according to the National Institute on Aging (NIA), part of the federal governments National Institutes of Health (NIH). Some hormones may have harmful side effects, according to the NIA, and the bioidentical hormones prescribed by many anti-aging doctors have not been subjected to rigorous testing for safety and efficacy.

It is easy to get seduced into the claim that there is something called anti-aging medicine, said S. Jay Olshansky, a longevity specialist and professor at the School of Public Health at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Exercise is about the only equivalent of a fountain of youth that exists today. It improves skin elasticity, muscle tone, bone density and you can do it for free, or pretty much free.

Anti-aging medicine has a long history, Olshansky said, with treatments such as caloric restriction and a precursor to hormone therapy surfacing in the pre-20th century. While many of todays anti-aging practitioners have their patients health and best interests in mind, Olshansky said, others are not far removed from the dollar-chasing hucksters of the past. I am optimistic that something is going to happen and happen soon that will allow us to slow the biological process, Olshansky said. But it is not anything that is out there today.

Anti-aging path is paved with new technologies

When Jill Reed ventured into the office of a local ophthalmologist and plastic surgeon a decade ago, it wasnt for cosmetic reasons. At the time, her anti-aging strategy amounted to facials and professional skincare products. But as the years passed, Reed, 65, of North Fulton, realized she was on a journey one that would gradually move her from facials to Botox to fillers.

I was a little shy in the beginning, Reed said. But as I experienced one procedure, it would give me the faith and encouragement to take another step should I need it.

She hasnt needed to take another step yet, but like many others in the baby boomer ranks, Reed will never say never. I think in todays times, you dont have to be as embarrassed about a lot of things you may have been 25 years ago, she said. If you have the money and you are able to make those decisions, go for it, girl! Or go for it, guy!

Increasingly, they are going for it. Nearly one-third of Georgians had moved into the 50 and up age bracket as of 2010, bringing with them new attitudes about aging. For some, aging well is best accomplished from the inside out. But others believe there is also nothing wrong with giving the ole tarpaulin a tweak.

The South Atlantic region made up of seven states, including Georgia has the highest percentage of cosmetic surgery practices in the country, according to data from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. Georgia ranks a distant second to Florida as the state with the largest number of board certified plastic surgeons.

In 2011, Americans spent nearly $10 billion on 9.2 million cosmetic procedures. Of those procedures, 82 percent were noninvasive, such as Botox and volumizing fillers, while 17 percent were surgical procedures, such as liposuction and face-lifts. Metro Atlanta doctors confirm the popularity of minimally invasive procedures as an alternative for patients who arent ready to embrace full-on surgery whether for economic or aesthetic reasons.

I can take five to six years off a face with fillers, said Dr. Jay Kulkin, founder of the Womens Institute for Health. Some people call it a liquid face lift.

The use of Botox (a muscle relaxer), volumizing fillers and collagen-stimulating lasers can rejuvenate aging skin of all types and temporarily mimic the effects of a face-lift, said Kulkin. Known for his extensive experience in laser technology, Kulkin believes one of the best noninvasive anti-aging therapies is CO2 fractional laser resurfacing. Tiny beams of heat penetrate the skins layers killing old skin cells and forcing the production of collagen, a primary component in skin elasticity.

Injectible dermal fillers, such as Sculptra, are also designed to stimulate collagen growth over a period of time, while other fillers, such as Juvederm or Restylane, give immediate results by filling out lines and wrinkles.

Dr. Tara Margarella, a cosmetic surgeon at Blue Med Spa in Midtown, uses fillers but in some cases prefers fat transfer to reduce the external signs of aging. Lines and hollowness around the eyes, nasolabial folds, thin lips, wrinkled skin and bony hands considered some of the most obvious signs of aging can all be reduced by taking fat from one part of the body and injecting it into the areas lacking volume. Fat, Margarella said, is easier to mold than fillers, particularly in delicate areas, such as under the eyes.

Stem Cells Could Be The Next Anti-Aging Fad

Injections of stem cells taken from patients blood may finally banish wrinkles if clinical trials of a new treatment are successful.

For some, wrinkles are seen as a sign of character. For most, they are an unwelcome reminder of ageing.

However, scientists are developing a method that may finally end the need for the routine of treatments and moisturisers used to try to keep facial lines at bay.

The first clinical trials are to begin shortly on a treatment that uses stem cells purified from a patients blood to combat their own wrinkles.

The cells will be injected beneath the skin where they will grow into new skin cells to help restore the elasticity, claims Pharmacells, the Glasgow-based company behind the technology.

Athol Haas, the companys chief executive, said: The skin has a natural elastic property which comes from cells known as fibroblasts.

The ability of the body to produce this elastic material slows down with age because the number of these fibroblasts decrease.

By introducing large numbers of stem cells into the right place, we are increasing the ability of the body to produce this material. It is still in its early stages but we hope to begin phase one trials within the next 12 months.

Until recently, anyone hoping to get rid of their wrinkles had to rely on cosmetic treatments that injected synthetic collagen under the skin as a filler to remove the lines.

Botox has now become popular for cosmetic treatments, where a neurotoxin from the bacteria Clostridium botulinum is injected to immobilise the muscles that can cause wrinkles.

Red wine may reduce men's blood pressure – but only if it's non-alcoholic

(CBS News) Many have been touting the benefits of red wine, but a new study shows that non-alcoholic red wine may be best for men's cardiovascular health.

Large amounts of red wine compound resveratrol may help with balance in elderly people Study examines red wine's anti-aging ingredient, resveratrol

According to researchers at the Hospital Clinic of Barcelona, drinking moderate amounts of non-alcoholic red wine for four weeks was able to reduce systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Drinking alcoholic red wine, however, did not lead to any significant changes.

The study was published online on Sept. 6 in Circulation Research.

For the study, researchers asked 67 men with diabetes or three or more cardiovascular risk factors - including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, being overweight or obese, smoking or a family history of coronary heart disease - to spend four weeks drinking either 10 ounces of red wine, 10 ounces of non-alcoholic red wine or 3 ounces of gin daily. After the four week period, they switched to a different beverage and then switched again until they consumed all three beverages.

Men who drank the non-alcoholic red wine had an average deduction of 6mmHg in systolic and 2mmHg diastolic blood pressure, equaling a reduction of heart disease risk by 14 percent and stroke by as much as 20 percent.

The alcoholic and non-alcoholic red wine had the same amounts of polyphenols, an antioxidant that decreases blood pressure. This lead researchers to believe the alcohol in the red wine may be lowering the substance's effect to lower blood pressure.

"The non-alcoholic part of the wine -- namely polyphenols -- exert a protective effect on the cardiovascular system," researcher Dr. Ramon Estruch, senior consultant at the internal medicine department of the Hospital Clinic of Barcelona in Barcelona, Spain, said to WebMD. "Polyphenols also have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that may be useful to prevent other disease such as diabetes."

Dr. Suzanne Steinbaum, attending cardiologist and the Director of Women and Heart Disease of the Heart and Vascular Institute of Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, told WebMD that she thinks the research will be welcome news to people who can't or don't want to consume alcohol. She was not involved in the study.

"Certain people don't want to drink alcohol, so here we have an alternative way for them to get the heart health benefits," she said. "It's not so much the alcohol as it is the polyphenols in red wine."

Nature’s wrinkle reducer

Sometimes, the answer to a more youthful-looking skin lies within a tree bark.

THE Greek physician Hippocrates once said: Let plants be your medicine. American skincare brand Origins has taken his advice to heart and bases much of its products around the healing powers of nature.

Its award-winning Plantscription Anti-Aging collection offers formulations fortified with Annogeissus tree bark extract, touted to be natures wrinkle reducer.

Native to the Republic of Ghana in West Africa, Anogeissus is commonly known as Siiga, meaning the soul. Local tribes revere the Anogeissus extract as it is regarded a potent natural wound healer and antimicrobial.

After five years of intensive research in partnership with plant scientists at the University of Strasbourg, Origins discovered that the extract of the bark demonstrated an excellent ability to protect collagen and help boost skins natural production levels of a glycoprotein called fibrillin. This resulted in a firmer and more resilient, youthful-looking complexion.

Now, there are new additions to the collection: a cleanser, treatment lotion, serum and two eye products.

The perfect starting point is the Plantscription Anti-Aging foaming cleanser which utilises potent plants to thoroughly wash away dirt, make-up and impurities in one simple step.

The gentle cleansing system contains Anogeissus, along with oat protein and jasmine flowers to condition skin and preserve the vital moisture balance.

The lightweight moisture-rich treatment lotion contains Anogeissus and is fortified with jasmine flowers, caffeine and aloe leaf. It is claimed to deliver softening and conditioning benefits, much like a skin cream.

Skin texture is smoothened and a youthful radiance is restored, as the skin is prepped to receive the optimum benefits from the other Plantscription treatments.

Proteonomix Licenses Exclusive Worldwide Rights to Novel Anti-Tumor Technology

PARAMUS, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

Proteonomix, Inc. (PROT), a biotechnology company focused on developing therapeutics based upon the use of human cells and their derivatives, today announced that it has entered into an exclusive worldwide license agreement for a novel source of primary human cells that secrete a factor capable of inhibiting tumor cell growth and causing tumor cell death. The technology was developed by Ian McNiece, Ph.D., Chief Scientific Officer of the Company.

The technology consists of methods for isolation and propagation of the primary human cells, gene profiles obtained from the cells identifying candidate micro RNAs and growth factor genes, and methods for generating culture media conditioned by these cells for isolation of the inhibitory factor or factors.

Recent experiments demonstrated the ability of these novel human cells and even the culture media conditioned by these cells to inhibit the proliferation of tumor cells, ultimately leading to their death, said Proteonomix Chief Technology Officer Steven Byle. This technology has the potential to identify molecules that can kill tumor cells and provides insights into the potential delivery of these inhibitory factors in vivo.

Terms of the license included an upfront license fee, an agreement with a related party and payments due upon achieving clinical and regulatory milestones based on success in developing products, as well as a royalty on sales of products resulting from this technology.
