3 medical dramas to fill that ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ void – IOL

By Debashine Thangevelo Jun 20, 2020

Share this article:

While Shonda Rhimes long-running series, "Greys Anatomy", is a benchmark for medical dramas - not forgetting its short-lived spin-off series, 'Private Practice", of course - there are other series offering a similar soap-esque feel.

Lets not forget the shows that weve come to love, including "House", "Code Black", "The Night Shift", which approach the theme from unique perspectives.

Below is a list of whats currently available on the small screen.

THE RESIDENT (SEASON 3):

Think of crime dramas. Every series in the genre offers something that satiates viewers appetites. The same applies to 'The Resident". This medical drama, which ticks the box as a must-see, has been renewed for a fourth season.

And it has a phenomenal cast of Matt Czuchry (Conrad Hawkins), Emily VanCamp (Nic Nevin), Morris Chestnut (Barrett Cain) along with new arrivals like Kearran Giovanni (Andrea Baydon), Rob Yang (Logan Kim) Shazi Raja (Nadine Suheimat) and more.

In the new season, the medical staff are subjected to new rules and doctors.

This series gives a surreal feel of a hospital. The writers are most creative with the storylines, especially when it comes to the emergencies handled by the staff at Red Rock Mountain Medical.

Of course, it is wonderfully offset by personal adversities faced by the characters. The series is a few episodes shy of its finale.

NEW AMSTERDAM (SEASON 2):

This series has grown on me. It is helmed by Ryan Eggold, who viewers will remember from "The Blacklist" series. He plays Dr Max Goodwin, the new medical director as New Amsterdam Medical Centre.

He is a bleeding heart, who puts patients before profits, and he is backed by an incredible team of specialists. Their motto is: How can I help? In the previous season, we learned Max has cancer and his wife is pregnant.

This season, he is a single dad (his wife passed away) and his tumour is shrinking thanks to a new therapy. As always, he juggles the politics of the hospital and the resulting drama of his patients and staff. This series has a lot of heart.

CHICAGO MED (SEASON 5):

This is the third Chicago spin-off series, where characters from "Chicago Fire" as well as 'Chicago P.D." crossover in some of the storylines.

Viewers have taken a strong liking to the series, which has been renewed for three more seasons.

This series follows the doctors and nurses at Gaffney Chicago Medical Centre.

Nick Gehlfuss is the lead as Dr Will Halstead (younger brother of Detective Jay Halstead of "Chicago P.D."). Creators Dick Wolf and Matt Olmstead have conceived a wonderful storytelling balance with ingeniously-penned trauma cases and individual setbacks.

NURSES (SEASON 1):

A new series, which takes viewers into the inner sanctum of a young group of nurses as they navigate their way on the job. The new recruits arrive eager and idealistic.

Their first day on the job becomes a crash course in juggling their personal emotions with their professional responsibility.

Ethics come into play and tough judgement calls being made. Amid handling the calls that come into trauma, each cast member is going through their own personal challenges.

This series is similar to "Greys Anatomy", in that it features a diverse cast. It also reminds of a young Meredith Grey and friends as they tried to find their feet in this fast-paced and demanding medical world.

Jobs for women: Anatomy of a win – Green Left Weekly

Women of SteelProduced and directed by Robynne MurphyScreening on demand June 10-212020 Sydney Film Festival

Youve probably heard The Ballad of 1891 about the Queensland shearers strike. You can probably sing Kev Carmodys From Little Things Big Things Grow about the Gurindji Walk Off at Wave Hill in 1961. Do you know about the general strike in 1969 that freed Clarrie OShea from prison? Or the late, great Jack Mundey and the Green Bans that saved swaths of Sydney from developers in the 1970s? Maybe you stood on the docks with the Maritime Union of Australia in 1993 and played your own part in union history.

But do you know the story of the Jobs for Women campaign at the Wollongong steelworks in the 1980s? No? Come gather round people and hear tell of a battle, and a victory, that by rights should be known as a landmark in Australian labour history.

Women of Steel, produced and directed by retired steelworker Robynne Murphy and funded by donations from unions and unionists, was selected for the 2020 (online) Sydney Film Festival and is screening on demand from June 1021. It documents a 12-year struggle by hundreds of mainly migrant unemployed women to get work at Australian Iron and Steel (BHP, now BlueScope Steel), then the biggest employer in the company town of Wollongong. And, most miraculously, their victory.

Filmmaker Murphy got her job at the steelworks through the campaign, and was a steelworker for 30 years. She moved to Wollongong in 1980 with a small group of members of the Socialist Workers Party (later Democratic Socialist party, now part of the Socialist Alliance) as part of the partys turn to industry a tactic to get members into heavy industry and union organising. The men in the group got jobs at AI&S almost immediately. Murphy and the three other women joined the thousands of local women on the waiting list.

During the 1940s and 50s many Wollongong women had worked in BHP subsidiary Lysaghts, building munitions. Like women the world over, they were forced out of their jobs when men returned from World War II. Many were not happy and started to get organised. By the 1970s, there were feminists organising in the area, including a Working Womens Charter Group campaigning for the rights of working-class women.

During the economic boom of the 1960s and 70s migrants flocked to the town to labour at the steelworks. Many newly arrived women had worked in industry in their home countries and expected to get jobs at AI&S. They duly put their names down at the employment office. But it wasnt until the women chained themselves to the gates, while a few snuck into the steelworks to investigate if they could do the work, that they received good media which led to AI&S being shamed into employing some women.

But these gains were lost within a year or two, and the women found that the only jobs available to them were in cleaning or canteen jobs. By the late 70s the company was back to their old tricks, saying there were no jobs for women. Many women ended up unemployed or with insecure, underpaid piecework in the garment industry.

With female unemployment in Wollongong at 40% by 1980, women who needed to work were at the mercy of small employers. This meant appalling pay and conditions for outworkers, and sexual harassment and even rape by cockroach bosses drunk on their power to hire and fire. It was one such case that provided the final spark for the Jobs for Women campaign.

The sleazy owner of a local chicken shop sexually harassed a series of young women working in his shop under threat of the sack. The Working Womens Charter Group called a public meeting about the issue and its cause the level of female unemployment in the town. The next day a group of women on the special womens list at AI&S, including Murphy and her comrades, was driven up to Sydney and lodged a complaint with the NSW Anti-Discrimination Board.

To find out what happened next, you should watch this film.

In brief, the women fought for jobs for the next 12 years, by any and all means necessary. They established a tent embassy outside the steelworks (inspired by the Aboriginal tent embassy in Canberra); marched, sang and performed street theatre; with the fellow male workers and unionists from across the Illawarra, broke down the doors of the Australian parliament, fronted the mass media to bust myths about womens capacity to lift 16 kilograms (about the weight of an average 4-year old), collared former New South Wales premier Neville Wran on the street about their right to Legal Aid, and fought a (legally aided) legal battle all the way to the High Court.

Green Left asked Robynne Murphy about why they were able to win support from male workers and male-dominated unions, who might have been expected to see them as a threat to mens jobs. She said one factor was that unions in the Illawarra had a good track record of taking on political issues from freedom for Nelson Mandela to Chile solidarity. But the crucial ingredient was that Wollongong was home to a large migrant community for whom solidarity came naturally.

Most of the men that worked at the steelworks then didnt have English as a first language and they experienced discrimination from the company too, she said. When they saw women trying to get jobs, the reaction from the men in the workforce from very early on was fantastic. Even overwhelming.

The willingness to use every tactic in the toolbox, she said, was because the campaign was controlled by the women who wanted jobs.

The Jobs for Women Action Committee was made up only of women who wanted to work in the steelworks, she said. I think that was a really important decision. When youve got a bunch of women who want work, basically most of you are willing to do whatever it takes. That was the most amazing thing about the migrant women. Once they learned, in their own languages, that they were legally entitled to work, they got involved in everything. Meetings, demonstrations, everything.

Hundreds of women won jobs and compensation through the Jobs for Women campaign, but it has a broader legacy.

I guess I didnt realise for quite a while just how significant the campaign was, Murphy said. You didnt see it immediately, but reflecting back on it now, I know it did change things for women. I see women driving heavy machinery now and I think, oh!

[Women of Steel is screening on demand from June 1021 as part of the 2020 Sydney Film Festival.]

Anatomy of an accident – The News International

The first flight of the Wright brothers was on December 17, 1903 and the first accident was only 12 seconds after takeoff. This is the proximity that exists between a flight and an accident.

With time, technology made aircraft so safe that today air travel has become the safest mode of communication. While aircraft became technologically advanced, the pace with which humans were trained to catch up with these high-tech machines was probably not enough.

Many countries really worked hard in the last 50 years or so to improve human performance. However, just like all other disciplines, this investment in human resource varied from country to country and culture to culture.

The accident that took place in Karachi is going through its initial investigation phase. A good investigator always believes that the cause of an accident mostly lies months or years before the actual accident happens. Accidents dont just happen over a day, their roots are established due to persistent oversight and compromised accountability.

Any accident investigation in general, and air crash accident investigation in particular, reaches a stage where the investigators either slow down or come to a halt facing a very important question the why part of the investigation. The flight data recorder tells the investigators what happened, how and when it happened but it is the CVR or Cockpit Voice Recorder which tells why it happened. Not only that but the invisible factors going through the mind of pilots also help in figuring out the why part; this of course is the job of Human Factors specialists who understand human psychology in stress.

It is important to note that during day-to-day flights also whole flight proceedings are recorded, which not only include engineering self-monitoring data but also the recording of pilot actions.

This means that whenever a pilot makes an error no matter how small it is on the flight deck it is recorded on the aircraft flight data recording and monitoring systems. So much so that before the aircraft lands at its destination the data is already available with the authorities on ground. For some airlines, this data is retrieved after landing when the aircraft is handed over to engineering.

The question is: what happens to this data? The data has predetermined parameters and a pilot must follow those parameters and limits while flying the aircraft. If a deviation or violation is noted then that deviation is communicated to flight operations by the flight safety department, who are the custodians of that data. After that, a small investigation is carried out so that such a trend is immediately arrested through the efforts of the flight standards and training department. This is a historically established and well developed system evolved over the years to ensure the safety of passengers globally.

Many investigations result in a blame game where the last person involved is blamed, whether it's a pilot or an engineer. This system of investigation is incomplete because it does not identify the systemic errors of supervision and management oversight.

Aviation psychologists do believe that when a person makes a mistake, especially if that mistake is a violation of procedures, then it is not the first time that they are doing it. Also it is believed that in an organization if one person is doing something without check and balance, then there are very strong chances that other people will also be doing it indicating a poor safety culture in that organization. The question is: who or what allows the safety culture to get destroyed?

The aircraft data, which is downloaded after the flight has the answer. If the accountable managers of safety and operations do not do their work and do not give proper feedback to correct such pilots then as per human nature the habit patterns will continue to erode. So much so that no one in that organization will be held responsible.

It is immensely important to know that aviation is based on a block-building approach of managerial hierarchy. If any of those managers are not doing their job then the safety culture will immediately collapse and the results will be deadly.

While investigations of this crash will take place, we hope that blaming only a pilot is not resorted to. We hope that all those who were responsible are identified. It is important that the data is collected not only for this flight but the data of all previous flights is also investigated so that we find the truth behind the culture of an organization. We also hope that the ICAO Annex 13 which deals with aircraft accidents is fully applied and implemented. It is a very important point to note that a judicial or criminal investigation is undertaken if people are found guilty of criminal negligence whether they are in the management or in the operations team.

PIA has a glorified history. We hope that this history may have an even better future but that will not be possible until a pure accountability culture is present in the organization. Airlines cannot exist without a safety culture. Airbus which is also part of the investigation will also shoulder the responsibility of correctly highlighting the gaps in safety procedures, if any, during the course of events of this accident.

Towards the end, another important role or probably the most important role rests with the regulator, that is, the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (PCAA). Most importantly, accidents in aviation can also be a factor of promotions and upgrades based on favoritism, where quality of training can be compromised. If there are gaps in the safety culture or training standards then the oversight of the regulator of those gaps will also be questioned.

The writer is an airline captain of Airbus A320 and an aviation psychologist. He is also a certified investigator of human factors in air crashes.

Ilmar Raag: Anatomy of the coronavirus adaptation – ERR News

Studies conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic have provided an interesting picture of the dynamics of public attitudes.

This all fits perfectly with Abraham Lincoln's famous maxim from over 150 years ago: "Youcanfool allthepeoplesome of thetime, and some of thepeople allthetime, butyoucannotfool allthepeople allthetime."

Let's leave aside the word "fool" here, and just talk about the impact of communication.

In the most general terms, the claim that people's immediate environment has a greater impact on their behavior than any form of communication, including propaganda, has been reaffirmed.

Principle of instant gratification

It is the principle of "instant gratification" that needed to be drawn from psychology when describing the changes in people during the COVID-19 emergency situation.

Following this, people primarily strive for decisions which provide them with an immediate, satisfying solution. This principle does not in general reveal people's wisdom and analytical ability, but it is a reality which must be taken into account nonetheless.

For example, when I'm in a bad mood, I buy some chocolate with this little treat, life quickly seems more beautiful. In the world of advertising, we can see the exploitation of this human feature in the commercials for fast loans, which always promise you money as soon as you require it.

Similarly, miracle cures are advertised, which claim you can lose ten or twenty pounds of weight in a miraculously short time.At the same time, people's behavior is not only driven by immediate pleasure and enjoyment, but also by, for instance, immediate fear.

In the first phase of the emergency, we saw how society embraced a fear through the information about COVID19.Don't get me wrong, I don't think anyone actually consciously wanted to fool people over the dangers the coronavirus presented.Rather than that, this was a scientific modeling of the spread of the virus under certain conditions.

The nation's crisis communications, plus most of the media, took this warning very seriously. The outcome was an atmosphere of anxiety which was extremely widespread through society.

In the second week of the emergency, 91 percent of the Estonian populace considered the situation serious.Fifty-eight percent of people wanted the restrictions put in place to be tightened. At the same time, only 4 percent of respondents were in favor of easing them.

At that point, we actually had experienced only a few deaths related to COVID-19.

What followed reflects the paradox of this type of pandemic. As the restrictions as imposed certainly had had their effect, as a result, the public could not directly perceive the significance of the threat.

Considering the number of people infected in Estonia, less than one percent of the population were people who had had direct contact with a sick, or even dead, relative.

This means that the willingness to comply with the restrictions was based primarily on communication and social agreement. This is the communication effect, par excellence.

Unfortunately, this effect is typically short-term that may have significant drawback later. For example in politics, election campaigns are mostly designed for the short term effects in order to make people to vote for the right candidate.

In the case of Estonia, the pandemic risk assessment warned us, for example, that our healthcare resources could collapse, and hospitals would become overloaded. And we expected that.

However, the developments seen in Italy, or New York, did not reach us.Only on Saaremaa did the feeling of a more serious crisis arise. One can only imagine what the dynamics of public opinion would have been had the epicenter of the virus had been located in Tallinn, instead of Saaremaa. But did not set in.

Instead, the economic situation provided the signals of the immediate effects. A fall in income actually affected a far larger proportion of people than the virus.Likewise, the inconvenience of the restrictions affected almost everyone.

As a result, an information conflict emerged, where emergency policy and crisis communication were primarily aimed at the threat of the virus, but the immediate reality facing the people gave off other signals.

Studies have shown that even when people did consent to the emergency measures during the first weeks of emergency, then quietly, almost subconsciously, different details of real life began to come to the fore.

By the fifth week of the emergency, the proportion of anxious citizens who wanted to tighten restrictions further had fallen to a fifth of the earlier figure.

They now made up less than ten percent of the population. At the same time, supporters for relief from restrictions rose to make up a quarter of the population (from 4 percent to 24 percent.) And this all happened without any communication campaign.

Confirmation of self-deception

At the same time, another phenomenon known in psychology - confirmationbias - deepened within the public information space.

Confirmation bias is a process whereby we begin to interpret signals from the outside world in accordance with our hopes and expectations.

I myself saw several references on social media to serious research articles, which was interpreted in opposing directions by different communities holding different attitudes in Estonia.

Let us just remember the "dance of the masks" and their usefulness, which could only have arisen as the anxiety background of the first weeks of the emergency had receded.

A large number of video stories were also shared on social media, in which "dignified" people reveal a look behind the curtain of the pandemic organizers.

Most of these stories could be refuted by any student who has studied the scientific methods of research for at least one semester, but all of this no longer had any meaning.

The cognitive dissonance created by the self-flowing path between official threat stories and people's immediate experience began to determine the change in attitudes.

Conclusions

It came as no surprise that when the emergency ended, it was immediately met with public approval. What conclusions can we draw from this?

1. Regardless of what the health experts think about potential developments, public opinion research demonstrates that the attitudes of more than half of Estonians have entered the next phase, where the impact of the virus is not assessed as being very high on a personal scale.Perhaps this backdrop of fear has fallen in vain, but it is still a reality emerging from research.

2. During the emergency, it was proven that crisis communication can achieve an information effect which lasts for a maximum of one month. However, for longer-term effects, at least some sections of the populace should receive direct feedback on the significance of the threat. In some ways, this is good news, because it suggests that no propaganda which does not rely on the real human environment can have any lasting effect.

3. If people in a democracy are guided by other people's attitudes, then in the next wave of the virus, society will probably no longer accept the same restrictions via any kind of communication. This puts much more difficult decisions on the shoulders of governments of the future. Instead, the likely solution is to take a higher level of risk, leading to a final phase in which COVID-19 no longer scares people any more than smoking-induced lung cancer does.

Anatomy and physiology of the cornea – Jill Lopez

The cornea is composed of four layers; the outer epithelium, stroma, Descemets membrane, and endothelium. The healthy cornea should be clear in order to refract sufficient quantity and quality of light into the eye. This light is then focused to form an image on the retina. Clarity is maintained by specific characteristics of each of the four layers.

Epithelium

The corneal epithelium iscomposed ofnon-keratinized stratified squamous cells. The epithelium is lipophilic, working as a barrier to the underlying stroma to maintain clarity. Absence of pigment, and vessels are also important for maintaining clarity and visionin the cornea. The entire epithelium has a turnover rate of approximatelysevendays and undergoes a constant cycle of proliferation and shedding in a healthy state. Healing of the entire corneal epithelium can occur within 72 hours in some species when damaged. Damage to this layer can result in focal or diffuse corneal edema from a decreased barrier to fluid. Chronic inflammation may result in vascularization or pigmentation of the cornea, thus impacting vision.

Stroma

The corneal stroma makes up approximately 90% of corneal thickness. This layer is hydrophilic and will swell with water uptake, reducing clarity. Blood vessels should not be present, though there is sensory innervation to the outer third of the cornea. This innervation is the cause of extreme pain for corneal ulceration. This layer is made of collagen fibrils arranged in a parallel fashion.Stromal replacement occurs after the epithelium works to cover defects. Over time, proliferation of collagen occurs to restore the corneal curvature. Disorganized arrangement uponhealing may result in scarring and decreased visionand inflammation leading to vascularization of this layer may also impact vision.

Descemets Membrane

Descemets membrane is the basal lamina of the endothelial layer. This layer has mild elastic properties and does not retain fluorescein dye.In health, this layer becomes thicker throughout an animals life and during corneal healing, endothelial cellsare able toproduce new Descemets membrane after several weeks of healing for full thickness injuries.

Endothelium

The endothelium is the last layer consisting of a monolayer of hexagonal cells that do not undergo mitosis.Similarlyto the epithelium, this layer is a barrier to the stroma to maintain corneal claritywhich is aided by tight cellular junctions.Healing of this layer is accomplished via cell enlargement and migrationor sliding. This results in decreased cell density of the endothelium after healingand with age. The endotheliumcontainsNa+,K+ -ATPaseionpumps which work to remove fluid from the stroma to regulate its hydration. Thinning or damage of the endothelium canaffect clarity as the hydration status of the stroma increases, resulting in corneal edema.Corneal endothelial dystrophy is an inherited condition leading to corneal stromal and epithelial edema. This can cause bullae, painful ulceration, andpigmentation inaddition to the edema that reduces clarity and vision. Similar sequelae can be observed in older dogs that develop corneal epithelial degeneration as this corneal layer thins with age.

Every Grey’s Anatomy Character Who Could Make A Comeback Before It Ends – TheThings

The future of Grey's Anatomy has never been more uncertain. We know that before season 16 even happened, season 17 was also greenlit, so we're safe for anotheryear at least. However, 17 seasons is an impressively long run and with this year's finale not playing out as planned due to the current pandemic, things feel very iffy indeed.

Throughout the course of Grey's Anatomy, we've had to get pretty used to major character exits. However, if season 17 is going to be the last, it's possible we actually get more returns than losses. Of course, some characters would be impossible to bring back and others may not be welcome after gettingfired for bad behaviour behind-the-scenes, but there are still quite a few characters who could totally make a comeback. Let's see who they are!

Nobody was more upset about April getting the boot than actress Sarah Drew herself. She explained to the Hollywood Reporter that she had been told there were just too many characters by season 14's end to keep her around. However, April got a lovely send off and technically as far as we know, she's not living too far from the hospital. Bringing her back would be a breeze.

Arizona quickly became a fan favorite the second she wheelied into our lives. The pediatric surgeon-turned fetal surgeon rockstar left so that she and Callie could raise their daughter together in New York. While many are still angry about Callie forcing such a thing on her, we'd be willing to forgive a lot for the chance to catch up with our girl.

Callie is as likely as Arizona to make a comeback. As far as we know, they're both living in New York, so really they're just a phone call away. Having Callie come back would be special and we'd love the chance to say a proper goodbye to baby girl Sofia, but we're hoping the writers know better than to have her pop up with Penny Blake in tow.

We haven't seen or heard from Stephanie Edwards since her heartbreaking season 13 finale/exit. As much as we loved the fact that she saved the day and ultimately decided to quit afterwards to travel the world, we feel as though we should get to see her again before the series wraps. Maybe not as a surgeon, but as an old friend.

Nathan would be an easy cameo if the writers decided to have him back. It wouldn't be too hard to write up a reason to have him and Megan fly in from California. However, out of all the potential returns, he's the one we'd be least excited about. His story wrapped up nicelyso what do we really need from him?

Alex Karev came very close to being the last one of Meredith's crew to end the thing by her side. However, as fans already know, he decided to make an abrupt exit this past season. To end the series without another appearance from Alex would be devastating, but Justin Chambers literally just quit, so we're not sure he'd be ready.

Related:20 Grey's Anatomy Characters Ranked From Least To Most Annoying

The reaction to the whole Alex-left-to-be-with-Izzie thing has been mixed. Nobody's been missing Izzie, but if the only way to have Alex come back for a visit is if she's there, we're guessing most fans would be ok with that. Can we all just imagine for a second how incredible it would be if she showed up and Jo somehow got 5 minutes alone with her...

Nurse Olivia was never a main character, but fans who have been following since the beginning would be able to spot her in an instant. She's also made a comeback before, having shown up briefly in the 14th season. We think it'd be a fun Easter egg to have her stop by.

Listen, we're not trying to tell Shonda Rhimes how to do her job, but if she doesn't bring Cristina back before the series finale, she should retire from show business. Cristina Yang is without a doubt the greatest character the show's ever had. She deserves to be there when Meredith's story finally finishes and we deserve to see her there!

Shane Ross would be an easy character to bring back if Cristina Yang is going to be flying in already. When she left to work in Switzerland, he went with her. Of course, nobody was too torn up about losing the guy, but if he wants to tag along, sure we'll catch up!

Fans were pretty floored when Preston Burke made his brief return in season10. His story wrapped up well, so it would be interesting to see how they'd even go about writing him back into the show. We could maybe imagine him popping in on Cristina just to see how things are going.

Addison hasn't shown up at the hospital since season 8, but she has been known to fly in for emergency cases. We think Shonda and fans alike would love to have Kate Walsh back for an episode or 2, so if she's game, we think it'll happen. It would be a great way to get follow-up info on the Private Practice characters, too.

It's been a really long time since we've seen Erica Hahn. The cardio legend hasn't been present since season 5 and she wasn't all that happy when she left. While giving her a small spot in the final season would be fun for old school fans, it wouldn't be as important as bringing some of the others back.

After a truly embarrassing first run at the hospital, Leah Murphy was rightfully fired. However, 3 seasons later she showed up in much better form. She had improved her craft and we were actually really happy to see her succeeding. That being said, if they want to have her come back, we don't think it'd be too hard.

Molly is Lexie's sister and Meredith's half-sister. She's the only member of the Grey clan left after Meredith, so it's pretty bizarre that the writer's haven't found a way to sneak her in already. After all, there's nothing they like more thansurprise family reunions for Meredith. We thinking it would be fitting to have her show up for a farewell.

School scraps ‘genderbread person’ teaching material after complaints from mother who refuses to accept her trans son – PinkNews

The 'genderbread person' helps children to understand the differences between gender and anatomy (Genderbread.org)

A high school has dropped an LGBT+ educational tool after a transphobic mother complained it was targeting vulnerable children like her own transgender son.

The school in Australia showed 15-year-old students an image of the genderbread person, a well-known teaching resource used to demonstrate that anatomy doesnt always determine gender.

The figure simply breaks down the differences between gender identity, gender expression and anatomical sex, allowing children to start a conversation and ask questions.

This angered one mother so much that she wrote to state and federal health ministers demanding that the teaching material be removed from the schools current and future teaching.

The unnamed woman happens to be mother to a 19-year-old transgender son, whom she mistakenly refers to as her daughter.

She believes the schools LGBT-inclusive approach is introducing confusion for children like her son, whose gender identity she attributes to depression.

Gender and sex are being confused [in school] it starts to introduce this confusion, especially with vulnerable young people like our [son], she told The Australian.

Some parents Ive spoken to have said their children who are on the autism spectrum have been sucked into this [trans identity] these are kids who are looking for somewhere to fit in. Other parents, their kids have had sexual abuse.

The mother told the paper of her fury at her son being given hormone therapy to combat his gender dysphoria.

She reportedly raised the issue with MPs but had been bounced around like a hot potato before the schools headteacher eventually agreed to remove the genderbread teaching material.

In over a year of feeling like I have been beating my head into a brick wall, at last a sensible response, she said.

Jack Whitney, Co-Convenor of the NSW Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby, told the Daily Mail Australia that cases such as this often arise because a parent is apprehensive of what they dont know or understand, and their immediate response is to remove their children.

However, we argue children have the right to an education that informs them of a world that is diverse and best prepares them to navigate the future, he added.

Justice League Anatomy: The 5 Weirdest Things About Wonder Woman’s Body – CBR – Comic Book Resources

There are only a few beings in the DC Universe who are capable of making Batman scared. There are even fewer who have taken the blunt force trauma of an enraged Superman and lived to tell the tale. However, DC's most iconic female superhero, Wonder Woman, has done all that and more in comics, TV, and her own solo film in 2017.

DCs flagship Amazon has macked up quite an impressive list of accomplishments over the past eight decades. While a fair number of those feats involve her tools like the Lasso of Truth and her Invisible Jet, Diana Prince has accomplished just as much without them. Now, we're taking a closer look at Wonder Woman to see what makes her so much more than the dirt she was crafted from.

RELATED: How Thor Brought Wonder Woman's Mom into the Marvel Universe

While costumes may have changed over the years, one of the most consistent aspects of Diana's superhero moveset has been her strength. While it's measurements vary wildly depending on the stories it's appeared in, its worth noting that shes always stacked up to universe threatening enemies, and yes, Superman.

Her history includes repeatedly slugging it out with the Man of Steel, no small task for anyone in the realm of fiction. Her most auspicious task, however, was towing the entire Earth with Superman. While naysayers may cry foul at the idea that the weight was shared equally, even lifting a fraction of our planet would put in in DCs top 1% strength bracket.

Wonder Woman can't just dish out a beating. She can take one as well. Her history shows that she can survive being thrown into buildings, mountains, and the Earth itself without missing a beat. Her bracelets make deflecting projectiles a breeze, and her healing factor should render any injuries a moot point if anything ever manages to pierce her skin. Additionally, extreme temperatures dont act as anything more than an annoyance to her, as shes been shown in upper reaches of space without issue.

In Greg Rucka and Rags Morales' Wonder Woman #219, she fights Superman of all people, who flies into a rage believing Lois Lane was murdered by Doomsday in a plot by the devious Maxwell Lord. The icing on the cake is, of course, his belief that Diana is Doomsday, leading him to hold nothing back in his attempt to murder her. Not only does she best him in combat, but she does so while holding back as to not inflict lethal damage.

RELATED: Justice League Anatomy: 5 Weird Facts About Aquaman's Body

While she's not the fastest character on the Justice League roster, Wonder Woman has had her fair share of feats involving speed. She routinely is able to deflect bullets, which means that her reaction time sits in the nanoseconds since the average bullet travels at 1,700 mph.

Her pinnacle of speed would undoubtedly be her deflection of shards in Walter Simonson and Jerry Ordway's Wonder Woman #194, where shes forced to save a man from particles of a deity that number in the trillions raining in from across the universe. She deflects them long enough for several pantheons to arrive and assist her in defeating him.

One of Dianas lesser-known talents, the ability to speak any language is rarely mentioned when listing her skills. In her titular 2017 film, shes shown as easily switching between Ancient Sumerian, English, Spanish, Chinese, Greek, and French. The average human knows one to two languages, while exceptionally linguistic people can jump as high as 70. However, Diana is functionally capable of speaking any language on Earth. She is also capable of communication at a near-infinite level.

While that alone might be impressive, she's also capable of communicating with beings that aren't even people. In the aforementioned fight with Superman, she uses one of her even less frequently addressed abilities in animal communication to call up a flock of birds and assist her. She does this while mending a shattered wrist, so it's safe to assume even this level of communication requires little concentration from the Amazon.

Dianas most unique anatomical trait is that shes not human in the most technical sense. In some versions of her origin, she was constructed out of wet dirt. While it may not be her current origin, Dianas most iconic beginnings all extend from the idea she was crafted from clay.

In some versions of her origin, Diana was created from the clay of her homeland of Themyscira and given life by her mother Hippolyta, Queen of the Amazons. Dianas immaculate origin also has several other perks too. Since theres no genetic sequencing to mutate or alien physiology to decipher, many of her powers in this iteration come straight from their ancient source: the Greek pantheon of Olympian Gods. She was also given several traits from the Olympian deities, including being as "beautiful as Aphrodite, wise as Athena, swifter than Hermes, and stronger than Hercules" in some of her origin stories.

Hunter Library continues to assist faculty, students with virtual research, including 3D anatomy – Western Carolina University News

When Ashley Hyatt, assistant professor of physical therapy at Western Carolina University, recently needed to show her students various perspectives of the human brain, there was a challenge.

Normally, Hyatt teaches from a classroom, in the laboratory and using clinical demonstrations. But in this case, she was faced with the new normal of COVID-19.

No problem. Enter the staff and resources of Hunter Library.

Jill Ellern, associate professor and IT systems librarian, had obtained Organon Virtual Reality anatomy atlas software earlier in the semester, just before spring break. Students share video game play all the time with websites like Twitch, Ellern said. Making on-demand videos of educational topics seemed like it would be a great service we could provide to the faculty and students.

Following trial runs and discussion with faculty, Ellern and Hyatt were ready to put the application into use.

Jill and I did a recorded Zoom session while she removed parts of the brain in virtual reality, so we could show the students a three-dimensional perspective of the basal ganglia, Hyatt said. I did the voice-over while she did the step-by-step dissection, so students were getting a good description of the parts from different angles, very much like they would with an anatomic model in the lab.

Jill Ellern enters the virtual realm.

Although the Hunter Library building is closed to the public, the staff are still performing duties while practicing COVID-19 precautions, and are available to respond to many faculty and student requests for educational and research materials needs. The 3D example Hyatt and Ellern utilized fulfilled course requirements.

Dr. Hyatt always goes above and beyond when it comes to educational experiences, but I was absolutely blown away when half-way through the lecture, a virtual reality clip of a simulation of the brain in a lab appeared, said Bianca Boieru, a first-year doctoral student in the physical therapy program. With me being more of a visual learner, I highly valued our time in the anatomy lab. With our educational transition moving from face-to-face lecture to the online format, she found a way to give us back a piece of that experience. With something multi-layered and unique like the anatomy of the brain, the virtual reality simulation helped me visualize better than I could from any 2D textbook. Im grateful for this type of technology that helps give students back the experience of being in the anatomy lab.

Another participating student readily agreed. Being able to see such a complex structure, like the brain, in 3D has greatly contributed to my understanding of the location and orientation of structures within the cerebrum, said Abby Murrell, also a first-year doctoral student in the physical therapy program. I feel very fortunate to have faculty and resources that optimize learning even from an online platform.

Physical therapy students must undergo a great deal of advanced instruction and experience with human anatomy in order to give their future patients the best possible care, said Ann Hallyburton, the librarys liaison to the College of Health and Human Sciences.

The use of virtual anatomy tools in remote physical therapy education will hopefully aid students and their professors in these interesting times when access to the laboratories and other hands-on experiences with anatomical study have been made so challenging, Hallyburton said. In addition to the interactive, illustrative model-based learning provided by the 3D Organon tool, Hunter Library has also temporarily made available to students the Aclands Video Atlas of Human Anatomy, an electronic resource offering exploration of real human cadaver-focused anatomical instruction with a special emphasis on the mechanics of body movement, and McGraw-Hill Medicals AccessPhysiotherapy, an electronic resource melding physical therapy electronic textbooks, videos and self-assessments.

These tools join the librarys permanent access to Informas Anatomy.tv that offers interactive 3D models of human anatomy, numerous electronic research databases and journals, and the services of an experienced librarian who provides research assistance via Zoom, email, chat and telephone, Hallyburton said.

Hunter Library has always supported the early stages of the research lifecycle, said Sarah Steiner, associate professor and head of instruction services. Whether selecting a topic, narrowing or broadening that topic, then finding, evaluating and synthesizing credible sources on that topic. With the Scholar Studio, we aim to close the loop on the research lifecycle by helping faculty and students to create multimedia research and scholarly projects.

The library also offers a mobile application that provides for easy access to online resources and services. In addition to providing a digital library card, the app allows users to check library hours, reserve study space, search databases, browse the catalog to request materials, and manage their account by reviewing due dates and renewing items. The app works for smartphones and tablets, and can be found under WCU Hunter Library through the App Store for iOS devices or Google Play for Android devices.

In addition to the VR anatomy lab and online platforms, the traditional book loan and checkout process remains available, with a staff member getting the physical item to a patron outside of the building.

Hunter Library is one of the few libraries in the University of North Carolina System that did not cancel any of the services to students and faculty, said Farzaneh Razzaghi, dean of WCU library services. Our dedicated staff and librarians answer questions through chat, email and phone, borrow materials from other libraries and, if a journal is available, scan the articles and email them to students and faculty. We also check online requests for physical materials that are included in our collection.

Anatomy of a Scandal: Everything We Know So Far About the New Anthology Series – What’s on Netflix

Anatomy of a Scandal book

Netflix has greenlit Anatomy of a Scandal, an anthology series from the creator of HBOs Big Little Lies David E. Kelley and former House of Cards showrunner Melissa James Gibson. The first season will be based on the 2017 novel of the same name by Sarah Vaughan. Each season is set to explore a different large-scale public scandal. Heres what we know so far.

The series was first announced via a Netflix press release back in May 2020. The series comes from 3dot Productions who are also currently working on a U.S. Womens Soccer documentary.

Netflix has ventured into anthology series before with the most notable ones being Black Mirror (currently on hold) and The Haunting of Hill House (and Bly Manor due out in October)

Attached to the project is director S.J. Clarkson, who directed episodes for HBOs Succession and the unaired Game of Thrones pilot and Netflixs Jessica Jones and Orange is the New Black. Clarkson was nominated for a Gold Derby award for the latter.

The original 2017 novel by Sarah Vaughan tells the story of two women and one man caught up in a very ugly public scandal. James, a high-ranking Westminster politician stands accused of rape, but his wife Sophie believes he is innocent. Kate is the barrister prosecuting the case and she is convinced James is guilty and must pay for his crime. Not everything is crystal clear in this court case and that complicates things for everyone. The plot tackles such things as marriage in an extremely turbulent situation and tense courtroom drama.

Sienna Miller and Michelle Dockery

Currently no cast members are officially announced for the first season of Anatomy of a Scandal. That being said, Recapped, a very reliable source that has never been wrong before, claims that the two leads have already been cast.

According to them, Sophie and Kate will be played by BAFTA and Golden Globes nominee Sienna Miller, known for her roles in American Sniper and G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra and Primetime Emmy Awards nominee Michelle Dockery, who is known for her roles in such series as ITVs Downton Abbey and Netflixs Godless. At the moment, we dont know which one of them plays Sophie and which one is Kate.

The first season of Anatomy of a Scandal will have six one-hour episodes.

Production for Anatomy of a Scandal is currently planned to begin in Fall 2020 at Shepperton Studios, UK.

While no dates have been announced or even hinted at, based on the production schedule, episode count and production complexity (no high-budget VFX required), we can assume Anatomy of a Scandal might be released on Netflix in Summer/Fall 2021.

Thats all we know so far, well keep this preview updated as and when we learn more.

Grey’s Anatomy boss reveals two storylines they couldn’t finish – digitalspy.com

Grey's Anatomy season 16 spoilers follow.

Grey's Anatomy showrunner Krista Vernoff has revealed two storylines for season 16 that the show was forced to cut due to the season ending early.

The 21st episode ended up as the season's makeshift finale, but there were originally four more episodes planned.

Speaking to Deadline, Vernoff described two plots that viewers would have seen happen: a storyline that would have explored why Teddy Altman cheated on Owen Hunt, and a storyline involving Andrew DeLuca that would have revisited the human trafficking case.

"We had an episode coming up where we were able to better articulate and better understand what's prompting Teddy's behaviour, and we don't get to air it," the showrunner said.

"Who knows, maybe it's going to change between now and when we'll actually shoot it for season 17, but I feel for Kim Raver.

"The amount of standing is high, and we've left her in a strange place. It's compelling... Why, when she was finally getting her happy ending, did she sabotage [the relationship]? I think it's [a] super-rich area, personally."

Related: Grey's Anatomy boss confirms "reset" ahead of next season after season 16 forced to end early

And speaking about DeLuca's incomplete storyline, Vernoff explained: "The other story that I was really disappointed that we couldn't complete... we did a story where there was a victim of human trafficking like two episodes ago, and DeLuca recognised it but he was in such a mentally compromised, manic state that nobody listened to him and the girl left.

"We had an episode where she comes back, and I am really sad that we can't air that episode this season because it felt important to offer that kind of hope to people who are living that experience.

"I may still complete that story next season."

Recent reports have also suggested that a major character death was planned for the original season finale. Vernoff didn't confirm or deny this, but did say that fans can watch the remaining episodes of Station 19's third season to find clues.

"Ironically, when fans watch episode 15 and 16 of Station 19, they will probably have a feeling of some of what we had planned for [the original Grey's finale]," she explained to TVLine.

One long-running storyline that was thankfully resolved in time was Richard Webber's mysterious illness, which turned out to be cobalt poisoning from a leaky hip replacement.

Grey's Anatomy airs on Thursdays on ABC in the US. It airs on Sky Witness in the UK with selected episodes also available on NOW TV.

Anatomy of a steal: How CeeDee Lamb was gifted to the Dallas Cowboys – Blogging The Boys

Did you go to bed kinda giddy about the Dallas Cowboys taking CeeDee Lamb with pick 17 of the NFL Draft? Did you check when you woke up to make sure you didnt just dream it? The general reaction to his selection has been overwhelmingly positive. And it should. The Cowboys had him as the sixth-highest ranked player overall in the draft. They are hardly alone, as many outside draftniks saw him much the same, with most having him as WR1. It really shouldnt have happened. So just how did this come about?

The Cowboys sticking to their own board when no one really believed such a defense-hungry team would take a wide receiver played a huge part, but it could never have happened if the sixteen teams ahead of them had not made the decisions they did. Some were good, even great picks. Others, well, not so much. Here is a look at all of the preceding selections and how they all combined to help land one of the most exciting picks for Dallas since perhaps Dez Bryant.

First, lets set the table with a look at the overall talent distribution at the top of the draft. These are the first 65 names, ranked in order, from our own Connor Livesays draft guide.

Now, there are different views of things depending on where you look. But Connor is hardly the only one to have Lamb ranked so highly.

So both the Cowboys and Bob Sturm saw it the same way. Ill take that as validation that Connor knows what he is talking about.

Now, heres how the draft played out, and right into the Cowboys hands.

Everyone, and I mean everyone, knew they were looking for defense. The big targets in the minds of most prognosticators were CB C.J. Henderson and EDGE KLavon Chaisson. S Xavier McKinney, CB A.J. Terrell, and LB Kenneth Murray were also mentioned frequently.

Pretty much a no-brainer. Burrow may not have been the very top talent from a general view, but he was QB1 for most, and the Bengals really needed one of those.

It is hard to get used to our beloved rivals making a smart decision. They snagged the consensus best player in the draft, at a position of need, and now we get to see him twice a year. Thanks for nothing.

We can only take comfort in Washington having six more rounds to screw up. This one was basically too foolproof even for Dan Snyder.

The Lions went with their biggest perceived need to take a consensus top 5 player at one of the money positions. Hard to fault them for that.

So far, things had played out pretty much according to expectations. Many had thought that the first round would see a lot of trades with the unusual circumstances forced by the pandemic. Ultimately, there would be only one of those before the Cowboys went on the clock, and that was just a position swap between Tampa Bay and the 49ers, probably to keep another team from poaching someone the Bucs liked.

And then with the next pick, the first questionable decision rears its head.

Its definitely the right idea to get help for Saquon Barkley, who the Giants center their offense around, and more protection for Daniel Jones as they seek to grow him into a franchise QB, but almost all observers felt that Thomas was not the best O lineman available. Connor had him fourth among all OL, and third of the tackles. It is not a horrible pick. But making a bit of a reach means very attractive options would be there for other teams before Dallas got on the clock, and more OL meant fewer WRs taken. That was rather important.

Everyone knew the Dolphins were going for a QB, and they got him without having to trade up, so great for them. What mattered for the Cowboys was this was another QB taken that pushed other players down to them.

Same thing for Herbert and the Chargers. He was seen as a bit of a reach, but when you dont have a starting QB anymore, you have to take some risks.

Prior to the draft, having Brown slide to Dallas was a dream scenario for some. But the Panthers quickly snuffed that out to take a player that is seen as perhaps the best interior DL drafted since Aaron Donald.

Simmons is an interesting player, because a lot of people arent sure exactly what his real role will be in the NFL. He is a freakishly good athlete, but it is going to take proper use to make him a star. A definite top 10 pick for most, he certainly didnt hurt the Cowboys by going here.

This was the first selection that really felt a bit painful. The odds of him making it to 17 were always a bit iffy, but there was still hope. However, there is an argument to be made that the Jags over-drafted him a bit. That is always a good thing for a team wanting talent to get pushed down to them.

Another offensive lineman taken ahead of the Cowboys was all good. The Browns were helped by the Giants here as well.

More good news for the Cowboys. Chaisson is still available at this point, and things are getting close with only five more picks before Dallas gets a crack at things.

This one was a bit of a surprise, because Ruggs was not only not the best wide receiver available, according to many, he wasnt even the best one from Bama. Still, it kept the hopes for Chaisson to Dallas alive, and was thought to be the start of a run on WRs that would continue moving things in the right direction.

The first selection of the Tom Brady era in Tampa Bay was to protect the new and not exactly agile quarterback. Good value and definitely filled a need.

So far, things have gone well for the Cowboys, especially with three QBs and four OL taken. Those were the kinds of runs that the team needed to get a shot at Chaisson.

It is worth mentioning that, while Chaisson was widely seen as the guy Dallas hoped to get, the enthusiasm among the fanbase for him was not overwhelming. He was good, and the right value for 17. He just wasnt, you know, an automatic star.

Suddenly, things got very interesting, because the Niners were believed to be in the market for a wide receiver - and the two best in the draft, CeeDee Lamb and Jerry Jeudy, were both still available. With Chaisson also still out there, the Cowboys not only had what was widely perceived to be their main target tantalizingly close, but now #Team40Burger began to stir.

And sitting just in front of the Cowboys at 16, the Atlanta Falcons were also thought to be considering Chaisson. What would Jerry Jones and his staff do? The tension in Cowboys Nation was palpable.

There have been reports that the Philadelphia Eagles were looking into a trade to get ahead of the Cowboys because they really, really wanted to get Lamb, but the price was too steep for their liking. You have to wonder if they want a do-over.

This amped things up even more for Cowboys fans. While Jeudy was also a top 10 talent on many boards, he was also seen by most as WR2 behind Lamb. #Team40Burger stood up and stretched to its full height.

Now Atlanta was on the clock. Would they snatch Chaisson? And did that even matter anymore if Lamb was still available?

The Falcons have serious issues in their secondary, and all indications are that they made a bit of a reach. Terrell was seen as a trade back option, or even the pick at 17 if things were washed for the Cowboys. The Falcons, instead of breaking our hearts, injected massive excitement.

The Cowboys had their expected target AND a completely unforeseen consensus top 10 offensive weapon available. But the big question remained: Would they go with need, or go with the best player still out there? In recent years, the team had apparently leaned towards filling that need. Now, Jason Garrett and Rod Marinelli are no longer with the Cowboys, and Mike McCarthy has spoken repeatedly about the desire to go after the most talented player whenever possible. Jerry Jones revealed that trade backs were on the table for Dallas as well. With so much need on defense, it might have been tempting.

#Team40Burger began to howl as the clock ran.

A mighty roar of triumph from #Team40Burger accompanied the announcement. After several years of either grudging acceptance or outright dis
approval, we had a player that created real adrenaline.

Only time will tell, of course, but this has the potential to be a true home run of a pick. Matched up with Dak Prescott, Amari Cooper, Michael Gallup, Ezekiel Elliott, Blake Jarwin, and Tony Pollard, Lamb could elevate the Cowboys to truly elite levels among NFL offenses. Great credit is due to the Dallas staff for sticking with their board and making this decision.

And it all could never have happened if sixteen teams had not all felt they needed to go in a different direction. A few questionable decisions along the way turned into draft gold for the Cowboys.

Anatomy of a 21st century recording studio: how Real World is adapting and thriving in a harsh recording climate – MusicRadar

Over the last couple of decades, most recording studios have already had the big wake up call: to diversify or die.

The idyllic Real World Studios in Box near Bath, UK created by Peter Gabriel in the late 1980s actually took on this mantra pretty much from the start, and began as a three-pronged operation with the studio running alongside Real World Records and the hugely popular live event, WOMAD.

But over the last few years, as recording budgets have been squeezed, the studio has had to become even more innovative, adding a number of diverse activities to its operation: from education to remix competitions, intimate gigs to virtual mixing. It has also become something of a studio hub, with half a dozen satellite recording and mixing rooms surrounding the main Big Room and Wood Room studios.

Producers and engineers including Ali Staton (Madonna, Seal, Turin Brakes) and Cameron Jenkins (The Verve, John Cale, The Charlatans, Everything But The Girl) have taken up residency, bringing a co-operative approach to west country recording in the UK.

The Big Room studio is also large enough to be a great place for gear launches, with Audio Technica and Universal Audio among the big names who've used it.

The main Big Room studio is also large enough to be a great place for corporate gear launches, with Audio Technica and Universal Audio among the big name companies who have made use of this stunning building.

There have also been live gigs held at the studio with names like Ethan Johns, Big Big Train and Les Amazones d'Afrique offering intimate sessions for devoted fans. And over the last few years, education has also played a significant role in the studio operation, as Head Engineer Oli Jacobs details.

We do a lot of student-led projects here and probably have between eight and ten regular universities and institutions from local Bath colleges to Berklee College of Music in the US that come every year.

"It works really well because you can get a lot of people in the Big Room and then a band in the Wood Room, so a lot of people can participate in what is effectively a hands-on studio training session.

It's kind of an accelerated learning zero to complete thing in three days!

eMixing is another very 21st century addition to Real World's portfolio, a way to get your tracks mixed at one of the best facilities in the world and by a top recording engineer. You can opt for anything from a monitor mix to full-on tweaked master, paying from 120 for each track.

Then there's the more hands-on experience of Producer Camp where you get to spend time with fellow producers at the studio and get to use all of the facilities Real World has to offer.

It's a two- or three-day residential session where people come and stay and record a song at the studio, says Senior Consulting Engineer Tim Oliver.

They get paired up and collaborate as producers and work in the Big Room with all the gear, and with a variety of session musicians, established guest producers and technicians. Over the weekend each pair of producers creates a song which gets published and released the following week.

It's a really positive weekend, the fact that you can stay here and get the Real World experience, Oli adds. They get to meet and work with a lot of other people and with great musicians rather than samples so, for example, we have the Wood Room set up with an amazing drum kit, drummer and engineer. It's kind of an accelerated learning zero to complete thing in three days!

So while the recording sessions at Real World remain an important part of its income, diversification is something that has become second nature to it over the last four decades. It's perhaps not surprising, then, that the facility has been quick to adapt to the challenges brought with the Coronavirus crisis.

Real World is developing new ways in which we might well be recording and enjoying music well beyond the crisis.

Indeed, Real World is developing new ways in which we might well be recording and enjoying music well beyond the crisis, with remote mixing being just one of the new options on offer.

We've been lucky in that we have been able to use the studio one person at a time, Oli explains. We were pretty quick to figure out how to have people virtually 'attend' sessions, being able to hear what we're doing straight away and in high quality, and to be able to feed back to us.

"We now have the remote mixing experience as good as you can get it, without the person being sat next to you, with a combination of Zoom or Google Meet for the communication and using Audiomovers for the hi-res audio transfer.

"We have also built a system that auto-mutes the talkback so either party doesn't hear the audio repeated.

An extension of all of these innovations is the studio's latest development: UnReal World, a 'virtual studio' as Tim explains.

There are a lot of collaboration ideas around at the moment but they tend to be fairly chaotic as they are musician led, whereas the idea of UnReal World is that it is producer led.

"There is a virtual studio with the producer at the helm of that studio, with the seed of an idea, a style brief and a playlist of references. They then ask musicians to download their audio stem ideas, play along and add something and then upload their ideas along the lines of what the producer has called for; so maybe they have said, 'I need some weird synth stuff on this track, give me some ideas'. The producer then stems out what they like, and then that evolves into something else.

We're trialling it with the producer John Reynolds, Tim continues. There are two tracks: a drum track where he is adding layer upon layer and another which is a Damien Dempsey acoustic guitar and voice.

"We're testing the water to see if there's any merit in the idea and to see if it creates anything at the end which is musically valid.

Finally we turn to the end product, the music itself, and perhaps the most exciting of Real World's new plans: immersive concerts where you get to enjoy live events on a more intimate level.

We are aware that a lot of people are doing live streams right now, Oli explains. Some are great but some are pretty boring. We are producing a series of concerts that will be audio only, with the focus on really hi-res audio streaming, not video. We want to do something that is a lot better sounding than what is out there, not just another live stream.

"The performances will be pre-recorded and then mixed here binaurally; they will be immersive mixes, making the experience as close as possible to being in the live room. The idea is that you spend your whole day on Zoom or staring at email and then this is 'just put some headphones on, close your eyes and just listen as if you were there'.

Because no-one can go out touring, they think 'well what can we do? Oh let's make a record!'

We're collaborating with a few institutions, he adds, like d&b audiotechnik who are a very important collaborator; we're also talking to Kings College London who are developing new surround sound plugin systems, and also the Bristol and Bath Expanded Performance creative cohort.

"We're still in the experimentation phase with all sorts of new ideas, like we may also eventually introduce an app so you can change where you are standing in the room or change where the instruments are around you.

As you can see then, with so many innovations, it's not so much a case of adapt and survive, but adapt and thrive and Real World looks set to push the recording envelope. There are plans to develop further spaces, plus part of the site is set to be redeveloped into a media hub over the next few years with additional office space, producer rooms and a cafe. But let's not forget the reason the studio started in the first place, to make great records, and that picture is as rosy as ever.

Actually it is looking really positive, says Tim. Because no-one can go out touring for the foreseea
ble, they think 'well what can we do? Oh let's make a record!' As a result, weve been getting many more enquiries than we expected.

Oli concludes: That's the one thing we have discovered during the lockdown is that no matter how great the technology gets to allow collaboration online, its ultimately a million miles away from the real thing. People are desperate to come into a studio together again, and there really is no substitute for musicians in a room together.

Anatomy of misgovernance – The News International

As flies to wanton boys are we to gods/ They kill us for their sport -Thomas Hardy

The crisis of governance that afflicts Pakistan is multi-dimensional; its causes are many and deep-seated; and it pervades all aspects of national life.

Having identified the main symptoms and dimensions of this crisis in my last article (March 28), it would be pertinent to probe its underlying causes and structural underpinnings. Although there may be sector-specific problems, this article seeks to focus on some of the generic issues that lie at the root of the problem.

Political uncertainty and turbulence have plagued Pakistan since its inception. Fortified with the vision and ideals of the Quaid-e-Azam in the early years, the new-born country was able to tide over its teething problems despite the cynical indifference of the departing colonial rulers and sinister hostility of its irredentist neighbour. However, since the untimely demise of its founding father, the country has been oscillating between democratic and authoritarian forms of government and helplessly groping for a stable, progressive and truly representative polity.

Poor quality of political leadership, coupled with self-serving machinations of the establishment, have prevented genuine democracy from striking deep roots in the country, while the midwifery of state organs to promote vested rather than public interest has undermined the rule of law and good governance.

At the heart of the crisis of governance lies a polarised polity, marked by vertical cleavages between the rich and the poor, the privileged and the underprivileged, the dominant elites and the faceless masses on the one hand, and horizontal divisions along ethnic, tribal, sectarian, and political lines on the other. The stratified structure of society, together with the failure of state institutions to enforce rule of law, has obstructed the social and economic development of the country.

The social and state structure in the country, modelled on the colonial pattern of master and subject, has not changed even after independence. The relationship between the ruler and the ruled assumes different forms in political, social, economic and administrative settings but remains unchanged in its essence and substance. The wielders of power in different spheres compete with one another for parochial gain but are united in the furtherance of common class interests. Barring a few exceptions, political, social and economic power remains vested in closely-knit personal and family networks, to the utter exclusion of the silent, suffering majority of people.

The force of public opinion, on the other hand, remains weak, fragile and unsure of itself. It is not so well articulated through mechanisms within the general public to be able to exert pressure on the multiple and mutually reinforcing centres of power and restrain them from sacrificing public good at the altar of personal or class interest. The self-styled leaders of public opinion have developed their own class interests on the periphery of the centres of power and act as safety valves for letting off steam rather than serving as catalysts for mobilising the people.

The civil society itself is marred by lack of awareness of common goals and collective action. There is a great proclivity towards individualistic pursuits and self-interest. The social fabric is riven with ethnic, sectarian and social cleavages. As a result, people are not able to coalesce for the pursuit of common objectives. The civil society could rightly be described as a sack of potatoes. The thwarted awareness of civic rights and responsibilities among the populace lies at the root of the malaise.

That is what keeps rule of law from striking deep roots into the soil of this country. That is what makes it an empty slogan rather than a real, vibrant force protecting people against the depredations of power. That is what encourages the strong and discourages the weak; that is what makes the rich richer and the poor poorer; that is what leads to the abuse of women and children; that is what makes the plunder of national resources possible.

Rule of law is more honoured in the breach than in the observance. In the first place, there is no dearth of laws that are discriminatory in nature and have been framed over the years to promote and protect the vested interests. Numerous laws have been enacted to serve immediate and short-term objectives and without due deliberation. The speed and gusto with which we framed some laws of the land must have made Lord Macaulay revolve in his grave with an awful sense of irony.

Second, the enforcement of laws has also been scandalously weak, partisan and discriminatory. Those who can buy off or pressurise law enforcers slip through the net. The reach of the long arm of law does not go beyond the weak and the underprivileged. Those trapped in legal processes slug through inordinate delays in disposal of cases and are forced to pander to the insatiable avarice of the custodians of the law.

Last but not the least, rampant corruption and favouritism have crowded out merit and competitiveness in all matters concerning government dispensation, be it recruitment or promotions, award of contracts or economic incentives, disposal of state land or public procurement. A culture of nepotism has become the order of the day and the concept of merit-based competition a cry in the wilderness.

All The Times Watching ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ With My Dad Has Been The Actual Worst – Pedestrian TV

Like the rest of you, Im currently in isolation. Except, unlike many of you, Im in isolation with my parents.

Its been pretty good, to be honest. Firstly, no rent. Secondly, Mum really likes to clean like, genuinely seems to get high from vacuuming.

But a weird development in iso has been our nightly viewing, as a family, of Greys Anatomy.

Ive seen most seasons of Greys Anatomy. Considering it has like 18 seasons, I think its pretty amazing Ive seen a lot of it, to be honest. Re-watching it has been equal parts nostalgia (omg I forgot about 007!!!) and new information (wow I forgot they actually adopted Zola).

But watching it WITH MY DAD has been a real time. Its now his favourite show. As in, me, mum and my sister will happily chat over scenes because were invested, but not THAT invested but dad will become completely focused on Greys Anatomy, and Greys Anatomy only. You cant ask him questions. You cant clang kitchenware around willy nilly. He has submitted to the Greys Anatomy god and to him he must be true for 42 minutes and 30 seconds.

I have rounded up the worst times to watch Greys Anatomy with dad, since Im sure some of you home-living folks feel me here.

My dad does not seem to understand the fundamental fact that Greys Anatomys lifeblood is relationships. He seems to think its actually a show about medicine.

Every time theres a relationship crisis, he groans and goes oh come on, were bored of this. He couldnt stand the Meredith/Derek back and forth. HATED Callie and Arizonas post-Africa dramas. Cant stand Lexies umming and aahing over McSteamy.

Dont get me wrong he loves the couples. When theyre stable, and doing surgeries without talking about their love issues.

My dad isnt very macho. He lives in a household of women, I doubt he could be. I would say hes a feminist but one of those ones who wouldnt be like Im a feminist.

What I do know is, my dad is almost 70 and not exactly up to date with the extensive history of women being seen as simply procreators and homemakers. I know he isnt like, hey you girls go get a man and have babies, but all of this blathering on comes down to this. In the great Cristina vs. Owen saga, my dad chose OWEN.

Every time Owen is doing his dumb shit wahuhuhuh Cristinaaaaa you will want to have a childeeee in your wombbb business, and me, my sister and my mum throw shit at the TV coz he SUUUCKS, dads like Cristina is the worst.

NO. SHE ISNT. I need to have a two second rant about how Owen MARRIED CRISTINA, knowing she was 100% dedicated to surgery and surgery only, and did not want kids, then got fucking MAD AT HER for wanting to abort their accidental kid. Uh, no shit dude. She told you she didnt want them, if you didnt listen thats on you, PAL.

Fuck. I needed to get that out.

Anyway, dad siding with Owen is a bone of contention in my family and I just dont understand how he cant see that Cristina Yang is jesus.

Okay, so you know how shows will have opening scenes, and you dont know the characters but as an avid TV-watcher, youre well aware that at some point in the episode, youll be told who the characters are and why youre meant to care?

Yeah. Dad doesnt get that.

Dad will be like who is that? at 0.03 seconds into episode 22. Hell be like where did he come from when the fucking surgeons ON THE SHOW dont know who this fucking man with a hernia is.

Its annoying.

So as I said, Ive watched a lot of Greys Anatomy. Not HEAPS, but a lot. This means Ive often known the outcome of an overarching plotline before my parents.

So when dads like I bet Meredith gets fired or I bet the shooter is that guy, its really annoying to have to keep a poker face. Even more annoying is when he has INSANELY INCORRECT theories like I reckon Yangs gonna die this episode and I bet Dereks CLEARLY GOING TO SURVIVE PATIENT dies.

I mean. OBVIOUSLY.

Greys Anatomy is currently streaming on Stan.

Thanos: 5 Weird Facts About the Mad Titan’s Body | CBR – CBR – Comic Book Resources

With two arms, two legs, a single head and torso, fans who prefer their cosmic villains as unfathomably large, cthulu-esque monstrosities may find Thanos rather boring. Additionally, his feats -- while notable -- are often written off as being enabled by the Infinity Gauntlet. The Snap certainly wouldnt havehappened without the golden glove, but the Mad Titan has plenty of other abilities that make him a universal threat, defeating many of Marvel's elite superheroes thanks to his unique alien physiology. Not only has he bested the Hulk in combat, but he's also outsmarted Asgardian deities, perfected inter-dimensional travel and mastered the supernatural during his time in the comics.

Here'sa look at what's under the glove that makes Disneys most famous California raisin so chipper.

RELATED: Thanos Steals the Avengers' Souls in Infinity War Art

His odd purple tones aside, the first thing many people notice about Thanos is his bulky frame. At just over6.5 feet tall and closing in at nearly 1,000 pounds of (mostly lean) muscle, its easy to see why the average human would find him intimidating.

While comic Thanos strength may vary wildly, theMCUs Thanos is capable of lifting 120 million pounds-- whichexplainswhy he was able to toy with the Incredible Hulk who, while still the 'Strongest There Is' by earthly standards, would struggle to lift a fraction of that. An argument could be made for Dr. Banner simply not being angry enough at the time, but that point is easily rebutted by the fact that it's immensely difficult for the Hulk to be angry when he's unconscious -- a likely outcome when witnessing the ease with which Thanos handled him in Avengers: Infinity War.

Speaking of crushing the Hulk, beating the aforementioned Avenger with ease as Thanos did would take more than just brawn. Thanos, for all his accomplishments, is rarely seen as a 'Speedster' character in the realm of comics. As Hulks strength increases with his anger, avoiding the increasingly powerful swings of his hammer-like fists would take reflexesand superhuman speed.

While his speed is mostly a moot point (Thanos travels via teleportation and/or spacecraft most of the time), film fans of this character will be pleasantly surprised to learn of his comic history of defeating the Silver Surfer, a character who can travel faster than light. Not only that, but he did so while collecting the Infinity Stones during a period where the Surfer had access to the Power Cosmic --a boon granted by none other than the 'Devourer of Worlds' and rumored next MCU big bad himself, Galactus.

RELATED: Thanos: Who ELSE Wielded the Infinity Gauntlet Across Marvel's Multiverse?

Thanos is an Eternal, a race of offshoot humanoids created by the Celestials (God-like space scientists). A million years ago, while they experimented on what would later become humanity, the Celestials also created the X-gene in humans (yes, that X-gene) in addition to the Deviants -- a race of religious, hideous counterparts to the more science oriented, often aesthetically pleasing Eternals. Immensely intelligent and powerful on their own, the Eternals turned to the skies and inhabited the stars -- in particular, Saturn's moon, Titan.

Deviants each carry a one-and-done mutation that is never repeated within the species. Some even mutated to the point where they were considered the monsters of human mythology. As it turns out, Thanos Grimace-like appearance is due to the fact he carries a Deviant gene and subsequently 'Deviant Syndrome' -- which, while giving him his trademark chin and pigment, unfortunately drove his mother to attempt to kill him at birth. While certainly tragic, he would later pay her back in kind.

Like their name suggests, the Eternals are functionally immortal. Immune to disease and the withering effects of age, Eternals are generally considered to live forever- provided a being with immense power doesn't kill them. They are also durable and possess immunity to most conventional human weapons in addition to being tolerant of extreme temperatures.

Thanos has benefited greatly from his heritage on both sides, being incredibly durable thanks to his thick, purple skin (given to him from the Deviant gene) and possessing great strength (due to his Eternal background). While Eternals may live for extended periods, none boast immortality like Thanos, who was spurned by the embodiment of death (his lover), and banned from entering her realm, thus making him unable to truly die.

Thanos, whose birth name is Dione, was a gifted child who had a brain that excelled past his tiny physique while growing up. As a genius without rival in nearly any field of science on his home moon, he created the Space Throne, which is not only capable of faster-than-light travel, but also capable of teleportation and inter-dimensional travel.

As a tactician, there are few who rival his prowess -- for his run in the MCU, he outclassed the hyper-intelligent and mischievous Loki (predicting many of his actions including an assassination attempt) and actually succeeded in outsmarting both Dr. Bruce Banner and Tony Stark during his victory in Avengers: Infinity War.In addition to his intelligence, he also possesses telepathy and telekinesis, both useful traits when triggering the Hulk into a blinding rage against his teammates or when defending himself from psychic attacks from telepathic opponents.
