Tom French‘s series of skull paintings are beautiful compositions of the living into the ultimate symbol of death. They aren’t purely skulls and they aren’t purely figurative, which makes his work stand out in this skull focused gallery show. “French’s work often treads the fine line between the beautiful and unsettling, combining technically tight, classical charcoal drawings with carefree, loose and ostensibly unfinished abstract forms.

Born in 1982, Tom French grew up in Newcastle Upon Tyne, North East England. Tom began his studies at the Newcastle School of Art and Design and went on to graduate from the Sheffield Institute of Art and Design achieving a first class BA Honors in 2005.

We’re proud to have him in FACE OFF: Skull-A-Day vs Street Anatomy! Tom sent us his latest piece titled Cranio Anatomia which stands at an impressive 4 feet tall! Come see it in person at the Museum of Surgical Science next Friday, May 31st through August 25th!

Pinball Journey Through the Human Body

Howie Tsui Musketball anatomical pinball machine

Howie Tsui Musketball anatomical pinball machine

Ho Yan (Howie) Tsui is a Canadian visual artist, born in Hong Kong (1978) and raised in Nigeria and Thunder Bay (Ontario). A recent winner of the $5,000 emerging artist award from the Council of the Arts in Ottawa, Howie was asked to create a new medical themed work for an exhibition on the bicentennial of the War of 1812.

After researching the horrors of battlefield surgery inspiration struck as he realized that upon entering the body, a musketball rattles around similar to that of a pinball. He went on to re-theme a pinball machine showing a British soldier being shot by a musketball on the front glass panel. The playing surface shows the innards of the soldier with the words “mangled viscera” at the center.

This is a pinball machine I’d love to play!

Howie Tsui: Friendly Fire  is part of the exhibition Beyond the Battlefield: The World of 1812, in the Agnes Etherington Arts Centre at Queens University in Kingston now on through August 25, 2013

Jim’s Notebook: Parenthood, The Carrie Diaries and More!

I grabbed so much great coverage on the new fall TV season last week at the network Upfronts in New York City that I’m bringing you TV Fanatics more exclusive videos from the red carpets.

At the ABC/EW Upfront Party, Anne Sweeney - Co-Chair, Disney Media Group, and President, Disney/ABC Television Group - told me how the new ABC schedule is put together and how shows like Scandal can impact choices:

Anne Sweeney Interview

At the NBC Upfront at Radio City Music Hall, Monica Potter - who earlier this week nabbed a Critics Choice Nomination for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama - talked Emmy buzz for her cancer storyline on Parenthood Season 4:

Finally, we all know that The CW wisely picked up The Carrie Diaries for Season 2, so we talked to stars Anna Sophia Robb and Brendan Dooling about what they’d like to see next for Carrie and Walt:

Anne Mondro – Crocheted Wire Hearts

Anne Mondro Sentient

Associate Professor at the School of Art & Design at the University of Michigan, Anne Mondro is not your average crocheter.  Instead of wool, she carries a thin 26-gauge tinned copper wire. Using the wire and a pair of crochet needles, she built sculptural forms in the shape of anatomical hearts. Anne spent about a year researching the anatomy of the heart, even spending time in the UM anatomy lab and using 3D modeling software to figure out how to create the forms with her crochet needles. No simple pattern indeed!

Anne says about the work,

“This piece is very personal. I’ve been working with older adults with memory loss and their caregivers. It’s so intense to be a caregiver. When you care for a loved one, the two of you become intertwined. You take on their vulnerabilities but also their strengths. As I thought about that relationship, it was important that these forms be tied together somehow.”

In 2006, she developed a community engagement course titled Retaining Identity: the role of creativity in the healthcare setting where art and design students partner with persons with dementia. The course works with the UM Geriatric Center and explores the potential of art to lift the human spirit in times of illness.

WANTED: Intern for Upcoming London-Based 10 Day Festival of Curiosity and Curiosities

WANTED!

Frighteningly organized interns for upcoming (30 August - 8 September) festival of curiosity and curiosities programmed by Morbid Anatomy, Strange Attractor, and The Coney Island Museum at a number of venues around London.

We are looking for is someone to help us research and contact venues, speakers, and performers; oversee scheduling and logistics; assist with publicity; and write professional emails to individuals and institutions.

The position is, I am sorry to report, unpaid. However, you will be generously rewarded with books, alcohol, food, and full access for yourself and two friends to the festival and other events. Work will be part time (3-6 hours a week) but focussed and occasionally (and inevitably) stressful.

We truly believe that, for the right person with the right interests, this will be a fantastic learning opportunity, and a chance to develop relationships with fascinating and brilliant people as well as remarkable and overlooked venues and institutions.

If interested, please email a short letter about yourself and your suitability for the role to congress[@]strangeattractor.co.uk by 28 May.

Please feel free to pass this on to any potentially interested parties.
