Sean Walsh was 20 when he found out his cancer was back. Hed been in remission for less than two years and was determined that this time round, he would not have conventional treatment. He turned down chemotherapy in the hope that he could cure his Hodgkins Lymphoma through an alternative approach, including a vegan diet, cannabis oil and coffee enemas. Throughout his treatment he used controversial thermography scans to monitor his progress, and believed he was getting better.

Journalist Layla Wright followed Seans journey on social media as he attempted to heal himself, and for a while, it seemed to be working. He raised thousands of pounds to fund his treatment, and beat the doctors prognosis. But in January 2019 Sean died, and his family believe alternative treatments cost him his life.

Through the testimony of those closest to him, and through his own words, Layla explores why Sean and many others took this approach. She meets the family of Linda Halliday who also relied on thermography scans for reassurance that alternative treatments were working and investigates the clinic that provided them.

Although a fragrant and delectable kitchen spice, ginger lends many healthful benefits, including:

Ginger is an anti-inflammatory, which means it reduces swelling. This may be especially helpful for treating symptoms of both rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. Folks may get relief from pain and swelling either by taking ginger by mouth, or by using a ginger compress or patch on the skin.

Ginger contains naturally occurring nutrients called gingerols and shogaols. Shogaols have been of interest in medical research for their anticancer and anti-inflammatory benefits. Gingers anti-inflammatory properties also protect the brain. Scientists have long recognized inflammation to be a symptom of degenerative diseases such as Alzheimers disease and Parkinsons. According to a 2011 study published in Evidence Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine, ginger may help decrease inflammation and improve cognitive function.

Traditional medicines have been used in India, even though there is little quality control or trials. A very small quantity of herbal medicines produced in India is exported, as they do not meet the regulatory standards required by importing countries. While they can be a great source of income and exports for India, we will need a modern regulatory system to succeed.

Successive governments have taken steps to promote alternative medicines. In 2003, the government published the first official list of Ayurvedic medicines, called a pharmacopoeia. The publication of a pharmacopoeia is the first step towards formalising any medical system.

In 2014, the Narendra Modi government merged the regulation of Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha, and Homoeopathy (collectively called AYUSH) into a separate eponymousministry.

Recently, the government decided to sell Ayurvedic medicines inJan Aushadhi stores.

In 2017, the All India Ayurveda Institute was set up in Delhi, on the lines of the famous All India Institute of Medical Sciences. The government isencouragingfarmers to grow Ayurvedic plants in various states to diversify agriculture and boost farm income.The budgetary allocation for alternative medicines has doubled since the present government has come to power.

The Coronil controversy emphasises the role the government has to play beyond encouraging the use of Ayurveda. At the core of promoting alternative medicines are two government regulatory functions: One, ensuring safety, and two, checking the truth of claims about efficacy. In addition to all the other schemes, the government has to emphasise on these two functions.

Contrary to popular belief, Ayurvedic medicines can be dangerous to health. The dangers arise primarily for three reasons: (i) All plants are not safe for consumption,(ii) Use of ashes and non-plant materials, (iii) Illegal addition of allopathic medicines.

Ayurveda uses many plants which aretoxicto humans, like datura andnux vomica, in large doses. It is essential that their dosage is limited or the plants are treated before they are included in the medicine.

Similarly, ashes may concentrate dangerous metals in the formulation. As recently as 2017, the Food and Drug Administration of the USwarnedagainst the use of certain Ayurvedic medicines. The FDA found the medication to contain dangerous levels of lead. This isnot the first timethis has happened.

Some unscrupulous medicine manufacturers go a step further. They mix allopathic medicines in Ayurvedic drugs, usually steroids. Some steroids (mostly corticosteroids) give a false sense of well-being by improving circulation and alertness. For the wrong ailments, like infections, they may accelerate the underlying disease, but since the patient gets a steroid high,he or she feels better and ascribes it to the medicine. Astudyby the King Edward Memorial Hospital in Mumbai found around 40% of Ayurvedic drugs tested contained steroids.

Uncontrolled use of poisonous plants, presence of heavy metals, and outright fraud (adding steroids) damages the reputation of Indian medicine. The unscrupulous and negligent manufacturers make profits by cheating, but harm the status of the entire industry.

The problem is worse in international markets. While we in India may be able to distinguish between established brands and suspicious ones, this is difficult sitting in the US. A patient with a negative experience will probably avoid all Ayurvedic medicines.

The first step of regulation of medicines is to ensure safety. Irrespective of whether they have any therapeutic effect, an AYUSH medicine should not harm patients. While the government published guidelines for the development and manufacture of Ayurvedic drugs, the enforcement of these provisions is inadequate. Lax enforcement of detailed regulations undermines the efforts made to develop the rules in the first place and encourage a culture of ignoring the law. Even companies which start by complying with the legislation may slowly slip up if they observe systemic non-compliance.

The second step after enforcing safety provisions is checking therapeutic claims. Therapeutic claims are very difficult to establish in allopathic medicines. In alternate medicine, this may be even tougher. Unlike allopathic medicine, the active ingredient is usually not extracted in Ayurveda. This makes Ayurvedic medicines less potent and may take longer timelines to show effectiveness. However, Ayurvedic medicine manufacturers mustnt make claims about curing conditions or diseases which are demonstrably false. Such false claims have a similar effect to dangerous medicines. Perceptions will develop that false claims dominate the whole field. Even where Ayurvedic medicines have positive outcomes, customers will be sceptical.

Regulation of any medical system has concentrated on safety and efficacy to protect patients. However, another role that governance plays is in developing trust in the system. When confidence in a system erodes, the effectiveness of subsidies, promotional campaigns and other schemes will be limited. Along with the promotion of AYUSH and farming of herbs, if we set up proper regulation of Ayurvedic medicines, we will not merely protect patients, but also promote Ayurveda as a safe and effective system of medicine, a system in which India can be a world leader.

Use of Ayurvedic doctors to treat Covid patients by Health Ministry raises concern among public health experts – The Kathmandu Post

Public health experts have raised concern after learning that the Ministry of Health and Population was deploying Ayurvedic doctors to the care of Covid-19 patients who are being treated in isolation at the National Ayurveda Research and Training Center in Kirtipur, Kathmandu.

They have said it is unethical and illegal to let practitioners of alternative medicine in the treatment of the Covid-19 patients. The ministry is not only risking the lives of the patients but also the concerned Ayurvedic doctors and their family members, said Dr Baburam Marasini, former director at the Epidemiology and Disease Control Division.

They know nothing about the infectious diseases. Infectious disease experts are needed to deal with the Covid-19 cases. How can traditional medicine practitioners treat the patients infected with highly contagious disease, when even the MBBS doctors know very little about it? Marasini told the Post.

Dr Ram Adhar Yadav, director at the National Ayurveda Research and Training Center, said Ayurvedic practitioners were attending to the Covid-19 patients because the ministry has not deployed allopathic doctors and nurses.

We have requested for doctors and nurses, but the ministry has not responded to our request yet, said Yadav.

The center was converted into a 20-bed isolation treatment facility for Covid-19 patients. The facility has reached its capacity with the recent rise in cases of coronavirus infection in the Kathmandu Valley. The Health Ministry has not assigned any doctors or nurses to treat and monitor these patients.

Deploying Ayurvedic doctors to treat Covid-19 patients is also an ethical issue, which can not only raise controversy but also defame the country internationally, warned Marasini.

Without a medical licence, even those individuals with advanced medical degrees from worlds top universities cannot be involved in medical practice in Nepal.

But as to why the Health Ministry decided to allow Ayurvedic doctors to look after the Covid-19 patients, public health experts are not sure and clearly concerned.

Ayurveda and allopathic medicines are separate methodsthe former is empirical and the latter is evidence-based treatment, said Dr Dhundi Raj Paudel, executive member of Nepal Medical Council, the national regulatory body of medical doctors, Using Ayurveda doctor in treatment of Covid patients is unethical. We cannot mix up Ayurved and allopathy.

Paudel added Ayurveda doctors are not even trained to handle Covid-19 cases and have knowledge about the risk factors and the use of personal protective equipment.

The Health Ministry might have been encouraged by the promotion of traditional medicines by our prime minister, an official at the Department of Health Services said on condition of anonymity.

The official was referring to Prime Minister KP Sharma Olis oft-repeated claims that Covid-19 is like the common cold and could be treated with home remedies.

The Health Ministry has said that there is nothing wrong in using Ayurvedic doctors to treat the Covid-19 patients.

What is wrong in providing treatment by an Ayurveda doctor in isolation? said Dr Jageshwor Gautam, spokesperson for the ministry, said, Treatment is treatment, and anyone who can provide treatment can be used.

He said the patients at the Ayurveda center had mild symptoms and the people attending them only had to perform minor medical tasks like monitoring their temperatures and blood pressures.

If any of the patients become seriously sick, they will be transferred to hospital for proper treatment, Gautam said.As of Monday, 16,945 people have been infected with Civid-19 including 38 deaths. Among them 356 cases are in Kathmandu Valley.

Where did the virus come from?The virus was first identified in Wuhan, China in late December. The coronavirus is a large family of viruses that is responsible for everything from the common cold to Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). After an initial outbreak in Wuhan that spread across Hubei province, eventually infecting over 80,000 and killing more than 3,000, new infection rates in mainland China have dropped. However, the disease has since spread across the world at an alarming rate.

What is the current status of Covid-19?

The World Health Organisation has called the ongoing outbreak a pandemic and urged countries across the world to take precautionary measures. Covid-19 had spread to 213 countries and infected more than 14,223,132 people with 600,629 deaths. In South Asia, India has reported the highest number of infections at 1,040,457 with 26,285 deaths. While Pakistan has reported 261,917confirmed cases with 5,522 deaths. Nepal has so far reported 17,502 cases with 40 deaths.

How dangerous is the disease?

The mortality rate for Covid-19 is estimated to be 3.6 percent, but new studies have put the rate slightly higher at 5.7 percent. Although Covid-19 is not too dangerous to young healthy people, older individuals and those with immune-compromised systems are at greater risk of death. People with chronic medical conditions like heart disease, diabetes and lung disease, or those whove recently undergone serious medical procedures, are also at risk.

How do I keep myself safe?The WHO advises that the most important thing you can do is wash your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or use hand sanitizers with at least 60 percent alcohol content. Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unclean hands. Clean and disinfect frequently used surfaces like your computers and phones. Avoid large crowds of people. Seek medical attention if symptoms persist for longer than a few days.

Is it time to panic?

No. The government has imposed a lockdown to limit the spread of the virus. There is no need to begin stockpiling food, cooking gas or hand sanitizers. However, it is always prudent to take sensible precautions like the ones identified above.

Ex-president Jammeh’s Alternative Treatment patient testifies – The Point

She told the TRRC that while receiving her treatment from MRC, there was a group of Santa Yalla Support Group initiated by seven people but later had 300 members.

She said that Santa Yalla was the first group that came out and enlightened people about the disease and that she was welcomed when she joined them.

"I was the first female in The Gambia to come out and said that I had HIV/AIDS."

She said the reason why she did so was because of the way people perceived it and through her sensitization,

She said through her sensitization, she was able to change peoples perceptions, educate and even convince others to get tested.

She told TRRC that in one of the workshops at Tendaba, she declared that she had the disease but people could not believe it and some had to call her later and asked whether she meant what she said.

According to her, she was one-time told that someone with HIV/AIDS can't live for more than 2 months. However, since 1995, she said, she had lived for many months.

"I prefer HIV/AIDS than High blood and Diabetes because what I am able to eat, a diabeticpatient wouldn't eat," she declared.

Ms. Jatta testified that at Santa Yalla Support Society, they had a home based care with facilities to support people chronically sick. However, she said, there was a day they were told that the former President Yahya Jammeh wanted to have a meeting with them at State House.

"At this time you had only Santa Yalla Support Society and Nganiya Kiling Support Society based in Brikama. Upon arrival at State House, Jammeh told us to have a family photo.

She said after the meeting Yahya Jammeh sent a cartoon of 1.5 litres bottles containing herbs which were meant to cure HIV/AIDS. She added that no one at the time knew who sent the medications as their coordinator did not tell them anything.

"On the 18th February, 2007, while in my house, my coordinator called me and told me she had a problem because she received a call from VP's office that Yahya Jammeh said she should select 10 people for him and that he would start administering HIV treatment the next day."

Ms. Jatta recalled that it was announced over the news that the former President would starttreating HIV/AIDS patients.

At this juncture a video with an Aljazeera Journalist where Yahya Jammeh declared to the whole World that he can treat HIV/AIDS was played.

Continuing her testimony, the witness testified that on the 19th of January, 2007, a vehicle took them to State House and they were received by Isatou Njie Saidy while Dr. Malick Njie did the consultations.

"After the president arrived, he declared that his conditions were that the patients would stop using Western Medicine, stop drinking attaya (green tea), and stop chewing kola nuts. While leaving Santa Yalla, I took it as if I was just going to meet a normal doctor and be allowed to go home. She added that she can't remember asking her consent before taking her details.

Ms. Jatta informed the Commission that while the consultations were ongoing, the camera was filming and some of the victims started to cover their faces but Dr. Malick Njie told them that there was no need to do that because the president was not going to play it on the TV but rather use it for reference purposes.

According to her, she was surprised because a screen was mounted and she was told to undress and put her towel and lay on the stretcher as Yahya Jammeh poured some spiritual water on her body.

She stated that Jammeh later told her to lie on her back and he took a bottle of oil and massaged her body including the private part, despite not having consented.

"Thereafter he took almost half a litre and told me to drink. I became unconscious and there was a stretcher outside in which I lied with a camera on me throughout."

The witness testified that after she drank the medicine, she became unconscious.

"Prior to taking Jammeh's medicine I was healthy and strong but the moment I started the concoction, I suffered as I was thinking and stressed because I was thinking a lot," said Jatta.

"In that treatment, we were there for six months and after our release, the following day, Yahya Jammeh called me to go back to the hospital to serve as a nurse attendant."

However, she said she could not decline the offer because she won't know what the consequences would be but later decided to leave the job on the grounds that there would come a time when she would lie to the whole world that the treatment was indeed true.

She informed the Commission that the treatment was administered at State House but they were kept at Kanifing Hospital.

She said there were seven batches receiving treatment from Jammeh and they spent seven months despite Jammehs claims that he could treat HIV/AIDS within 3 days.

The witness recalled that there was a time each time Yahya Jammeh traveled his younger brother, Ansumana Jammeh and Dr. Mbowe administered the medications.

"After attending the treatment, they used to give us three bags of rice to remove the gravels; we went to the rice fields and picked cashew."

She added that they were also forced to work on the farms.

To date, the total number of coronavirus disease infections have crossed 12 million mark and caused the death of more than half million people worldwide. In spite of global efforts, there is no definitive treatment for the disease despite the multiple claims that have created controversy in the past few months.

Antiviral therapy, chloroquine or hydroxychloroquine alone or in combination with Azithromycin, Convalescent Plasma therapy have been tried for treatment of Covid-19 but no trial has been able to show a reduction of the viral load and/or symptoms. Preventing infection is still the best available medicine in view of no standard treatment or vaccine.

Looking at the infectivity and severity of Covid-19, Ministry of AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy), Government of India suggested measures that includes the use of homoeopathic medicine Arsenic Album 30C, Ayurveda preparations such as Kadha (Ginger, curcumin, cloves, honey, fennel seeds, cumin seeds) and lukewarm water as an immunity booster.

Preliminary data from researchers at the University of Oxford have reported a 35% reduction in death of patients receiving mechanical ventilation. Results which have given us all much needed reason to celebrate. Multiple vaccine trials are ongoing and are currently our best hope for the management/eradication of the virus.

Patanjali, an Ayurvedic drugs manufacturer in India launched Coronil, an Ayurvedic drug to treat Covid-19 on June 23. The launch was based on their placebo controlled clinical trial results on 95 Covid-19 positive patients aged between 15-59 years, out of which 69 per cent were cured within three days, and 100 percent within seven days.

The results also claimed to reduce hsCRP and IL-6 levels in the treatment group and showed weaker IL-6 response, which would indicate a lesser chance of a cytokine storm, a complication which has had such devastating outcomes for patients.

Coronil is made of the extracts of pure Giloy, Tulsi and Ashwagandha. It is in fact a similar composition to Kadha, which is recommended to use as an immune booster by Government authorities.

Given the intense global interest in all reported treatments of Covid-19, Coronil inevitably started trending on Twitter straight after Patanjali held a media launch of the product as a Covid-19 cure.

The medical community immediately raised flags of concern over the veracity of the companys claims. Questions focused on the patient selections for the trials, which may have biased outcomes in the treatment group.

Wishing to avoid another false start in the search for a cure, the Ministry of AYUSH quickly asked the manufactures to furnish details of the study and banned the advertising or publicizing such claims until the issue could be duly examined.

Sadly this new claim of treating Covid-19 with an Ayurvedic drug has raised many hopes but the manufacturers have been unable to provide substantive answers on the composition of the drug, sample size, patient selection, study design, place of study, drug dosing, result validation, prior approval to conduct trial and ethical clearances.

Such promising results have naturally caused a media sensation in India, but without the supporting evidence that these steps have been followed it is another false dawn for Corona patients. When taking in the bigger picture, it is a sad fact that Ayurveda medicine will be viewed from a Western perspective with immediately skeptical eyes. Clinical trials conducted in this space have a duty to follow standard protocols, otherwise complementary and alternative medicine will be potentially irreversibly damaged and harm the rich history of Ayurveda and reputation of this science of Indian Origin.

This pandemic has united the world irrespective of caste, creed and religion and reminded us of the importance of collaborations. If the claim regarding Coronil for treatment of COVID-19 is not found to be correct after verification, this will be a big blow to the credibility of scientific research in India especially Ayurvedic research.

While debating a bill that would update oversight for the practice of medicine, dentistry and alternative care in the territory, members of the House of Assembly also took a broader look at the future of Virgin Islands health care over the past week.

The Medical Amendment Act, 2020 would set specific qualification standards for medical professionals seeking licence to practice in the Virgin Islands.

The 47-page bill saw its second and third readings July 2 after it was presented by Deputy Premier Carvin Malone, the minister of health and social development.

The House voted in favour of the bill on July 7 after making some substantial amendments in closed-door committee based on detailed input from health professionals, according to Mr. Malone. The bill, however, wont take effect or be made public until it receives assent from the governor.

During the debate, Premier Andrew Fahie said that as government maps out medical care it will be important to allow for the integration of alternative forms of medicine.

The bill includes practitioners in fields beyond typical medicine, who could get licensed through the Allied Health Practitioners Register.

For example, the bill defines a naturopath as a person who is trained in a therapeutic system that employs the use of natural forces, such as light, health, air, water and massage and other natural remedies but does not prescribe drugs, pharmaceuticals or substances for ingestion for the treatment of health conditions.

Mr. Fahie said there is a balance to be found between traditional and natural medicine.

The reason Im going into natural medicine is that we have to start to be pioneers, he said.

The bill also more explicitly outlines what constitutes professional misconduct, such as practising without the appropriate licence.

Other infractions include improper relations with a patient; knowingly betraying a patients confidence except in extenuating circumstances; knowingly abandoning a patient in danger; issuing a false medical certificate; acting as a specialist without proper registration; wilfully misrepresenting the effectiveness of a treatment; and knowingly practising while intoxicated.

One amendment would up the $3,000 fine for submitting false information to the registry to $5,000.

Meanwhile, if the head of a corporate body knowingly commits an offence under the bill, that person would be liable on summary conviction to a maximum $5,000 fine and up to three years imprisonment.

Fees for new registration and licensing would see an increase under the new bill.

Full registration for a medical or dental practitioner would cost $200, a two-year licence $500. A specialist registration would cost $300, a two-year licence $750. Other temporary, provisional and special fees are outlined as well.

An overseeing council would be given authority to waive special registration fees for medical professionals called in during a state of emergency or disaster, or for a council-approved specific purpose.

The transition wouldnt be immediate, though.

Medical or dental practitioners who are already registered wouldnt have to renew for a year after the act comes into effect.

If a practitioners licence lapses, they would have to pay a $500 penalty fee in addition to the cost of the renewed licence.

Contending that it is impossible to discuss the future of medicine in the VI without talking about funding, opposition member Mitch Turnbull pointed to some issues with the National Health Insurance system.

We have a system that could and should work, but it has to be funded properly and timely, he said.

He expressed concern for the long-term financial stability of the system, explaining that NHI is currently costing government so much that it is unsustainable.

According to figures from Mr. Malone, the territory of fewer than 30,000 spends in excess of $90 million on health care annually, around $42 million of which is funded by a subvention from the government to the BVI Health Services Authority.

Were still putting seed money in NHI, Mr. Malone said.

This bill did not specifically address insurance, but it is one of a series of anticipated acts and policies guiding the future of medicine in the VI.

When such big-picture financial issues crop up, Mr. Turnbull said they trickle down to everyday interactions, with some medical practices experiencing lengthy delays getting paid by NHI. The premier agreed that NHI reform is needed.

If it is not reviewed, it will bankrupt the VI, he said.

Mr. Fahie said he believes the fund wasnt allowed to build up properly to facilitate future growth.

In his concluding remarks, Mr. Malone said the House went the extra mile in exploring non-traditional practices with its amendments. He indicated that several other health-related bills would be coming down the pipeline as well, including ones dealing with mental health and private hospital licensing.

Usually, in treating a disease, medical experts will pair medication with an adjunctive treatment such as diet and exercise to complement primary treatment. For coronavirus, a few experts believe that yogaand meditation have the potential of being adjunctive treatment.

A recent studywas published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, which was a collaborative effort between Deepak Chopra, Harvard University, Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, University of California, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Together, they described the link between the anti-inflammatory effects of yoga and meditation.

Deepak Choprais an Indian-American author, part of the New Age movement, and advocates alternative medicine. In April, he shared how stress, especially during the pandemic, leads to inflammation through increased levels of adrenaline as well as decreased levels of cortisol which impairs the immune system.

"The first is the epidemic of the coronavirus which is causing physical and mental anguish; the second is the financial crisis which is also causing physical and mental anguish, and the third is the anxiety and panic that's causing all of the stress," he shared, explaining that that are three simultaneous pandemics happening. "For whatever situation you're in right now ask yourself what am I grateful for and as soon as you ask yourself you'll get ideas, pauses, sensations, images, feelings, thoughts that will alleviate your stress."

Medical experts have urgently searched for ways to prevent and treat coronavirus infections ranging from drug trials to therapeutic approaches and medicine systems such as Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurvedic medicine from India. Yoga and meditation are two of the therapies that the team explored.

Several symptoms of coronavirus include inflammationin various ways such as blood clotting, swelling organs, and joint aches. In the study, the authors wrote, "there is evidence of stress and inflammation modulation, and also preliminary evidence for possible forms of immune system enhancement, accompanying the practice of certain forms of meditation, yoga, and pranayama, along with potential implications for counteracting some forms of infectious challenges."

Yoga and meditation as adjunctive therapy are meant to reduce the severity of coronavirus such as helping the immune system and improving lung health. There are also potential benefits for a patient's neuroimmune system as medication helps target inflammatory functions, namely the fight or flight response being replaced with a "relaxation response."

The authors also noted how 20-minute meditation or yoga for six weeks "resulted in a significant downregulation of . . . proinflammatory genes and a significant reduction of activity of the proinflammatory transcription factor." With coronavirus, anti-inflammatory activity increased cell receptors' ability to interfere with viral activity.

In June, India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi claimed that yoga is a means of building a protective shield of immunity against COVID-19. His encouragement for people to practice yoga and meditation comes a few days before International Yoga Day on June 21.

"We all know that until now nowhere in the world have they been able to develop a vaccine for COVID-19 or coronavirus," said Modi. "Which is why right now, only a strong immunity can act as a protective shield or a bodyguard for us and our family members . . . yoga is our trusted friend in building this protective shield."

Earlier this year, India's Ministry of Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, Sowa Rigpa, and Homoeopathy (AYUSH) gave guidelines on several ancient practices that people can do at home during the lockdown. "Yoga has the potential to cater to the mental, physical and psychological challenges. It puts to test how one can live in challenging times," Modi said.

Here’s What Skin Experts Really Think About Using Tea Tree Oil For Acne – POPSUGAR

While I'm a big advocate for the skin acceptance movement, I think we can all agree that acne sucks. No matter what stage of life you're at when you're experiencing it, it's never that easy to manage, and often the only way to get rid of it (or reduce its appearance) is to do a lot of trial and error. If you're anything like me, this usually means making your way through Dr. Google's list of recommendations for treatment. The solution most often found at the top of the list? Tea tree oil.

So on behalf of acne sufferers everywhere, I've consulted NYC board-certified dermatologist Dr. Hadley King , Dr. Ross Perry, medical director of London's Cosmedics Skin Clinics, and Dr. Rekha Tailor, medical director of Health & Aesthetics, who's also based in London, to find out what all the fuss is about. And, more importantly, if it actually works for acne.

"Tea tree oil is an essential oil that comes from the leaves of the melaleuca alternifolia, a small tree native to Queensland and New South Wales in Australia," Dr. Tailor tells POPSUGAR. It has been used in herbal and alternative medicine for years. Boasting antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, it remains popular in skin care today, sold as a pure oil or incorporated into products like moisturizer and face cream.

According to Dr. Perry, tea tree oil is a natural astringent. "It works to remove excess oil from the skin and lessen bacteria growth on the skin while speeding up the healing of scars, scabs, and infection due to antiseptic properties," making it perfect for oily and acne-prone skin, as well as a quick-fix treatment for breakouts. Basically, tea tree oil kills bacteria to ensure your skin is squeaky clean (in a good way).

While Dr. King favors ingredients like benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, retinoids, dapsone, and sodium sulfacetamide for treating acne, she believes that tea tree oil is a great natural alternative. In addition to being antibacterial and having anti-inflammatory properties, she claims that tea tree oil also boasts antifungal and antiviral properties.

Pointing to a study featured in The Medical Journal of Australia, which compares tea tree oil to benzoyl peroxide, Dr. King also notes that the two work to combat acne similarly; however, though tea tree oil is less irritating, it doesn't work as quickly.

Dr. Perry, on the other hand, believes the effectiveness of tea tree oil all comes down to the severity of the acne. "Tea tree oil alone isn't going to get rid of severe acne," he admits, adding, "It would be generally recommended to help keep skin clean and aid the healing process of acne alongside other treatments and products."

"Depending on the severity of the acne, I'd recommend using it after a double cleanse," advises Dr Perry. He continues, "You can mix a few drops of tea tree oil with witch hazel and apply using a cotton swab, and let it sink in before applying a light non-greasy moisturizer. Or you can mix a few drops in with your normal moisturizer and apply that way." In other words, try to avoid using it on your face in pure form.

The main downside of tea tree oil is that it's an irritant. "Tea tree oil can be incredibly drying on some people's skin, especially if used undiluted or if you have sensitive skin," warns Dr Tailor. Dr Perry agrees, advising that you patch test on first use to see how your skin reacts to it. If there's any sort of irritation or burning, it's not for you.

Beyond this, Dr. King tells POPSUGAR that the only other downside is that data regarding the efficacy of tea tree oil is quite limited. While it's definitely worth trialling, you may be better off opting for an alternative that's been scientifically and medically proven to fight acne.
