Lockheed Supports Innovation Challenge; Elsevier Awards $650K to Libraries Scientists- CSR Min
For the third year, Lockheed Martin is supporting the aerospace and aviation category of the Spirit of Innovation Challenge, sponsored by the Conrad Foundation. The annual Challenge engages high school students to use science, technology, engineering, and math skills to develop commercially viable products and services that address sustainability issues. The Conrad Foundation is a non-profit that combines education, innovation, and entrepreneurship to inspire solutions for global sustainability. Underwriters Laboratory #39;s 2012 annual global study, The Product Mindset, shows that sustainable products and operations are becoming more important to manufacturers. 81 percent of those surveyed say sustainability is essential to the success of their business. 89 percent of manufacturers say the same thing about operational sustainability. For the report, researchers interviewed 1200 manufacturers worldwide from the high technology/consumer electronics, food, smart appliances and building materials sectors about safety, performance, innovation and sustainability. The Elsevier Foundation has awarded $650000 in grants to eight institutions for its Libraries in Developing Countries and New Scholars programs. The Libraries initiative supports innovation in improving access to scientific, technical, and medical information. The Scholars program underwrites projects that help women scientists balance family responsibilities with demanding careers. FirstSixty: DOOM 3: BFG Edition (PlayStation 3, Windows, Xbox 360) (Part 1) – Video

FirstSixty: DOOM 3: BFG Edition (PlayStation 3, Windows, Xbox 360) (Part 1)
On FirstSixty, we play a video game that we have never played before. We play for 60 minutes, recording our immediate reactions to the game. It #39;s not a review - we #39;re just having fun (or perhaps not) and joking around. On this episode, we #39;re stepping off the spaceship and entering the United Aerospace Corporation on Mars in the classic first person shooter revamped, "DOOM 3: BFG Edition," developed by id Software and published by Bethesda. For those familiar to the franchise, DOOM 3 is a reboot of the original DOOM franchise that was made famous on the PC and Super Nintendo. In those games, as well as this one, you take control of the lone space marine who finds himself in the middle of a world gone to hell; the only hope for humanity #39;s survival as he must stop a demon invasion from reaching the surface of Earth. Sean has personally been a huge fan of this series from the beginning with the first DOOM, as our grandfather was a gamer himself and would regularly buy new games, whether it was DOOM, Super C (Contra Series) or one of the two American ports of Hideo Kojima #39;s hit series, "Metal Gear." Add the fact that id was bought by Bethesda Softworks (makers of "Fallout 3," one of Sean #39;s all-time favorite games) and published this updated version of this game, and you may as well have a match made in heaven. Or, in this case, hell! Additive Manufacturing – main film – Video

Additive Manufacturing - main film
Additive Manufacturing (AM) refers to a revolutionary range of processes that can create parts with hitherto impossible geometries; often within a space of hours. The AdAM team at the University Sheffield is playing a key role in realising this potential by conducting research and development across a broad range of AM processes for industries such as aerospace, automotive and healthcare. Featuring interviews with our collaborative partners - BMW Group, Boeing Research Technology 3D printing specialists Materialise and AM consultants Wohlers Associates -- we hear how important university researchers are to these organisations.From:ResearchatSheffieldViews:0 0ratingsTime:07:12More inScience Technology

Acorn Growth Companies & The Edgewater Funds Partner to Acquire UK Aerospace Firm

OKLAHOMA CITY--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

Acorn Growth Companies, a private equity firm focused exclusively in the aerospace and defense sectors, has partnered with The Edgewater Funds to acquire Paul Fabrications, based in Derby, United Kingdom, which specializes in the manufacture of high-precision and complex metal assemblies for the aerospace, power generation and nuclear fueling industries. The acquisition is the second venture for Acorn Growth Companies and The Edgewater Funds since the partnership was announced early this year. Paul Fabrications will operate as one of four businesses in the Composites and Aerostructures Group of AGC Aerospace & Defense.

Our relationship with The Edgewater Funds was formed with the intent of building upon our core business unit competencies and to further develop the AGC Aerospace & Defense brand in the global marketplace, said Rick Nagel, Acorn Growth Companies Partner. This is an opportunity for us to continue to grow strategically as well as better serve our customers by leveraging Paul Fabrications precision machining capabilities, expertise with exotic alloys, and position in the European market in both the aerospace and nuclear sectors.

The addition of Paul Fabrications was a critical step in gaining entry into the European market and it is important for us to be in such proximity to industry leaders like Airbus and Rolls Royce, stated Acorn Partner Jeff Davis. Our entry into this market is one of many strategic steps in building our composites and aerostructures platform into a significant global supplier.

Debt financing for the transaction was provided in a unitranche credit facility led by CIT and included CITI and PNC.

Transaction details were not disclosed. Moving forward, the company will do business as Paul Fabrications, an AGC Aerospace & Defense Company.

Acorn Growth Companies, a private equity firm focused exclusively on aerospace and defense opportunities, oversees management and control of AGC Aerospace & Defense. The firm has over $200 million under management with companies across the United States and United Kingdom, operating worldwide under its primary banner, AGC Aerospace & Defense.

The Edgewater Funds is a Chicago-based private equity firm with nearly $1.4 billion in capital under management. Through Edgewater Growth Capital Partners, the firm partners with management to help accelerate growth in their businesses. Edgewater focuses on funding high quality middle market companies where it can add substantial value through capital, experience and its broad network.

Rocket Launch 2012 UIUC – Video

Rocket Launch 2012 UIUC
As a freshmen in Aerospace Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, we were given the opportunity to take the course AE 100. We built the rocket and assembled the payload, and best of all, we got to launch it 1151m into the air (that #39;s 3776 feet)!
