Space Tower Christmas in Kakuda, Japan
The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) operates a rocket engine research center in the rural town of Kakuda, and the city embraces this space heritage in its civic events. The most visible symbol of this is the full-scale 49m H-II rocket model overlooking the town. Armstrong received a Bachelor of Science in Aeronautical Engineering from Purdue University and a Master of Science in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Southern California. He held honorary doctorates from multiple universities. Armstrong was a member of the National Academy of Engineering and the Academy of the Kingdom of Morocco. He served as a member of the National Commission on Space (1985 to 1986), as Vice-Chairman of the Presidential Commission on the Space Shuttle Challenger Accident (1986) and as Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee for the Peace Corps (1971 to 1973). US astronaut Joseph Acaba and his Japanese colleague Akihiko Hoshide successfully undocked the HTV-3 space carrier from the International Space Station on Wednesday. The Japanese cargo ship brought five tons of supplies to the orbital station last month. It was the third Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency spacecraft to deliver cargo to the ISS. The HTV-3 will be deorbited and sunk in the Pacific Ocean on Friday.
